Experiential Travel Ideas in Africa

7. Hiking Through the Simien in Ethiopia

More and more we are hearing about travellers who are in search of an immersive adventure, formally known as experiential travel. Experiential tourism is more than just a visit. Why not get a deeper understanding of your travel destination by connecting with people, their culture and the city which they inhabit?!

The Simien trek is one of the best cliff walks around that will get you up close to baboons, ibex mountain goats and sightings of the rare Ethiopian wolf. Jaw-dropping views, wall-to-wall sunshine, generous hospitality and rare wildlife combine to make for an unforgettable trek.

1. Budget Camping Tours in Namibia

8. Cooking in Morocco

Experience the best of Namibia with adventure tours that begin with an exciting Safari in Etosha National Park Namibia’s premier game reserve. Fantastic wildlife viewing, including predators and roaming herds of elephants. Meander through the oldest desert in the world while marvelling over breath-taking scenery in Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei. Spectacular sunrises and sand dunes await.

The magical Kingdom of Morocco exudes an energy that pulses from the heart of Marrakech to as far out as the mountain top villages. Its varied inhabitants from mountain and desert dwelling tribe’s people to sophisticated urbanites make for a cultural sensory overload. The Moroccan cuisine is testament to this. Typically, a half-day cooking workshop will offer you the chance to purchase fresh ingredients from the market, and then make a traditional tagine and a couscous dish. It’s a lovely way to immerse yourself in Morocco’s culture.

2. Surfing in Liberia Before the world opens its eyes to the perfect waves of Liberia, join the select surfers in the know from around the world as they make their way to this lesser known surfer’s paradise. The much talked of surf movie, Sliding Liberia, has already put Liberia on the surfers map, but with the civil war continuing until 2003, Liberia still remains a largely untouched gem. 3. Gorilla Trekking in Uganda With an estimated 900 mountain gorillas remaining, gorilla trekking to see these endangered primates ranks among the top highlights of any trip to Africa. When was the last time you came face to face with one of our closest relatives? One can imagine this thrilling experience is one to behold. While gorilla trekking can be done all year round, November would be your best bet as your trekking permit will be at a discounted rate due to the rainy season.

4. The Masai Mara Migration The Masai Mara wildebeest migration is probably one of the most intriguing and spectacular displays of wildlife behaviour. Witnessed in East Africa in Kenya’s pristine wilderness outback, the migration is not only about the wildebeest. Predators linger in anticipation for the auspicious arrival of their prey. Hours can pass while you nervously watch the water for crocodiles and other prowling predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas, waiting on the upper banks of the Mara River for an easy catch on arrival. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that will have you awed by Mother Nature, and a conversation piece that will keep your audience hanging at every last word. 5. Okavanga House Boats in Botswana Being on a house boat does not in any way limit your outdoor experience to merely floating along the water while sipping on a G&T as the sun drops into the distance. For those who require a little more activity, enjoy fly and sport fishing, relax whilst being ‘poled’ by your own guide in a dugout canoe, do a village tour and camp overnight at an island in the Okavango Delta.

9. Riding Adventures Nothing says “immersive experience” quite like exploring your surrounds mounted on the back of a trusty steed. It gives you a more intimate feeling of being close to nature. Camel back riding in Samburu, Kenya makes for an unusual game-viewing experience and the fact that it’s one of the most ancient modes of transport adds to the authenticity of this adventure. Mozambique’s Benguerra Island boasts an array of water sports which provide hours of entertainment, however exploring the land on horseback can be equally fun. Island tours and nature walks are in abundance, but galloping across endless white sands on horseback can be quite surreal. Travelling on either of these majestic creatures allows you to explore further and see more than you would on foot. Travelstart is Africa’s leading online travel agency connecting Africa to the world. Search, compare, and book flights on hundreds of airlines. T

he Drakensberg (Dutch – Dragon Mountains) is the largest and highest mountain range in South Africa, described best by her Zulu name “uKhahlamba” which means ‘barrier of spears’. The mountains majestically span five provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Free State and Limpopo) and form the south eastern international border between South Africa and Lesotho.

Covering over 1,000 kilometres, the most well-known, and I dare say, impressive section of the Drakensberg lies in KwaZulu-Natal. Divided into three parts, North, Central and South, there are endless delights for all travellers, traditional to millennial, local to international. Southern Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport

through some of the most amazing countryside in the world. Note, plan extra travel time for pictures! In both scenery and activity, I would describe the Southern Drakensberg as Midlands country serenity meeting Drakensberg outdoor adrenaline. Here are some of thing to do to find your perfect combination of both.

TOP THINGS TO DO

in Southern Drakensberg KZN South Africa BY MONIQUE VAN DER WALT

PARAGLIDING. This is clearly the adrenaline category, but has its own blend of serenity. On the slopes of Bulwer Mountain, right at the start of the Southern Drakensberg region, is Wildsky Paragliding (Est 1996). An exquisite trip through Bulwer Biosphere takes you to a paragliding site near the top of Bulwer mountain, known as the 1000 (its 1000 feet up into the air from Wildsky). Staycation in their log cabins, and choose to jump tandem with an instructor, or complete a full course to learn to paraglide yourself. Does the thought of it make you a little queasy? Well, rest a little more easy: Wildsky Paragliding is owned & operated by husband & wife team, Hans and Ria, are incredibly experienced in the field. Hans is a National Paragliding Instructor of South Africa, so you’re definitely in safe hands… wings. T O U R I S M

SANI-PASS. Sani is the Drakensberg mountain pass between South Africa and Lesotho; at 2876 metres (9435 feet) it ranks pretty high as the ultimate off-road experience. If you are not the driving type, there are tours on which you can be elegantly ferried up and down up Sani Pass by an experienced guide. And to top it all off (excuse the pun) you can staycation at the Sani Mountain Lodge, or simply enjoy a meal or

drink with breath-taking views. This year has seen an early snowfall on Sani Pass, the 12 May saw the beginning of snow-seekers from far and wide descending to the winterwonderland of the Drakensberg. Skiing, sleighing and snowboarding are added to the list of Southern Drakensberg activities, like horse-riding, birdwatching, nature & cultural walks, hiking and camping.

WATER SPORTS. The Umzimkulu River begins in the Drakensberg & ends in the Indians ocean on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. In the Southern Drakensberg, it plays host to a variety of water sports: leisure boating, canoeing, trout fishing, swimming and summer-only tubing (water levels are too low in other seasons). The river also boasts famous events like the famous Drak Challenge, a canoe marathon that ends at the Umzimkulu River Lodge. The lodge is a truly unique way to experience the river; Fairy-tale style cottages, a la carte riverside dining, and indoor/outdoor family activities like miniature golf & petting zoo. What’s more, the owners and staff will readily provide insider tips on current highlights in the Southern Drakensberg.

MEANDERING. While you’re exploring and adventuring, there are plenty of charming country stops on your Southern Drakensberg route. With the Underberg Cheesery, cafes, restaurants, crafts, curios, historic tours and the Wine Gallery of Africa, there’s plenty to see and do!

MOUNTAINEERING, BIKING & NATURE. The Drakensberg Mountains are well known as a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with all-year-round Mountain Biking, trail running, and mountaineering. If you are the camping type, you can sign up for a multiday hiking experience and really go off-the-grid. In the central Drakensberg is the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a world-famous UNESCO World heritage site. UNESCO describes the site as having ‘exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts.’ So, while exploring the Southern Drakensberg, expects

to see some of the rare & indigenous flora and fauna, such as the cycad, protea and bearded vulture.

HORSE-BACK RIDING. A romantic getaway, family outing, thrill-seeking group, or multi-day off-the-grid & cross-border (SA & Lesotho) camps – it’s a fabulous way to see Southern Drakensberg. Khotso Horse Trails is recommended for hosting of such experiences; their cosy log cabins provide a serene holiday location or a base-camp for a d ve n t u re r s . Khotso horses are exquisite creatures and the owner is an experienced outdoor enthusiast (Ultra marathons, trail running etc) - engineering a well-tailored & beautiful experience.

ur plane crossed the blue waters separating the continents of Europe from Africa. I looked down from my airplane window, remembering the moment I stood at The Last Point in Europe or the Europa Point in Gibraltar, where the waters of the Mediterranean Sea meet the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. I remembered standing at the Europa Point, marked by a red and white light house and looked across the haze towards Africa, and the mighty Atlas Mountains. I saw earthen colored peaks below, I knew

we had reachedAfrica, flying over the beautiful and unique red hued Atlas Mountains. I had seen nothing like it in my life. Although I have flown over the Himalayas, the Andes, the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, but nothing had prepared me for the amazing sight below. The High Atlas Range rise in the west of the Atlantic Ocean stretching all the way to Algeria and Tunisia.

Riad in the old city, I couldn’t take my eyes off the streets and the array of colors rushing by. We saw men and women wearing striking djellabas, colorful robes with hoods and displays of lamps, silver tea pots and trays, textiles and carpets. I felt like a child in a candy shop. I could hardly wait to arrive at the Riad and go out to explore this amazing city of colors.

We landed in Marrakech, the red city, amidst colors and sounds that were new to me. I savored the colors and sounds of Africa as I set foot on my sixth continent. As we drove down from the airport to our

Morocco is endowed with a rich culture and tradition. There is so much to see and explore. Even though our trip was brief, these are a few places that caught my eye.

10 THINGS TO DO

IN MOROCCO BY NILOFAR BAWA

1

BEN YOUSAF MEDERSA

Founded by the Merenid Sultan Abou el Hassan in the 14th century, this ancient school of theology housed scholars to memorize the Holy Quran and learn theology. Its tiny dormitories above the central courtyard used to house hundreds of students. The beautiful architecture, the large central courtyard, the exquisite stucco work, the colorful tiles, the fine wood railings and the inner courtyards rimmed with fine wood railings reminded me of the beautiful Alhambra Palace in Andalusia. Like in Alhambra, Arabic inscriptions run throughout the Medersa, most common is the Bismillah Invocation, “In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful.” As I leave I glance up and note another inscription over the doorway, “ You who enter my door, may your highest hopes be exceeded”. I silently respond, Amen, as I step out into the narrow street of the Medina.

2

LAZAMA SYNAGOGUE

Unknown to many, Marrakech has a strong Jewish heritage and community. During the Inquisition fol-

lowing the Reconquista, many Jews fled Europe and saught refuge in Morocco. Walking through the narrow streets of the Mellah quarter of the Marrakech Medina we arrive at the Lazama Synagogue. The blue and white architecture and colors of the synagogue stands out. A small garden in the courtyard offers a sense of peace as we hear the whispering of prayers taking place in the blue carpeted prayer hall. The original synagogue is said to have been built around 1492. There is a Jewish cemetery we could not visit due to shortage of time. The synagogue offers a glimpse into Jewish culture and life in Morocco.

3

KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE

Named after a nearby book market , the Koutoubia Mosque stands tall, the beautiful minaret rising to 70m, dominating its surrounding Djemaa el Fna Square. Famed for its magnificent minaret that influenced the La Giralda in Seville and Moroccan architecture in general is the oldest minaret of the three great Al Mohad minarets remaining in the world. It served as a model for the Giralda in Spain. The mosque is surrounded by a hub of activities during the day and at

night when the lights of the minaret shine bright.

4

EL BAHIA PALACE MARRAKECH

El Bahia Palace lives by its name meaning Brilliance. Comprising of walled gardens, orange, cypress, jasmine and banana trees, the palace is a glimpse into Morocco’s opulent past. Situated at the Northern edge of Mellah, the Jewish quarter, the building stands out in beauty and elegance, incorporating intricate stucco work and mosaic. Ceramic tiles decorate the rooms. We walked the length of the garden path, admiring the fine architecture and the beautiful fountain, where we stopped to take pictures.

5

THE GREEN PHARMACY

A traditional Berber pharmacy seemed to have a remedy for everything including common cold and baldness. It’s a good spot to buy gifts, especially the world famous Argan oil. We were given a private demonstration about the various oils and herbs traditionally used in Morocco and the Maghreb. Everyone

G U I D E

was warm and welcoming. The place held a whiff of saffron, cumin and other unidentifiable herbs one associates with North Africa.

6

THE HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS

North Africa’s greatest mountain range runs across Morocco from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Algeria and Tunisia. We drove on the highest road in Africa, 2260m high. Snow covered peaks rise high into the mist, palm trees and rivers peak through the clouds. Fresh snow lay on higher ground as we drove by the picturesque landscape. Snow falls in the mountains from September to May. These beautiful mountains are visible from Europa Point in Gibraltar, a reminder that the two continents are a stone’s throw away. The High Atlas Mountains are a trekker’s paradise, popular with visitors. Standing on the mountains one feels the peaceful solitude and remoteness from civilization. Little coffee shops dot the roadside where one could stop and have Moroccan tea and cakes.

7

AIT BEN HADDOU

A fortified red earth city surrounded by high walls is a traditional pre-saharan habitat. The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture. There aren’t many inhabitants left in the kasr, but as we walk towards the top, we come across many little shops selling local goods, carpets, colorful Babouche slippers and leather bags. The view of the Atlas Mountains and the surrounding valley is simply breathtaking. Not far from the kasr is the movie set still standing from the blockbuster film the Gladiator. We hear tales of the cast and the encounter with Russell Crowe from the smiling local population. Many of them acted as extras in the film or served on the sets in the background.

8

OUARZAZATE MOVIE STUDIOS

The Atlas Film Studios and Cinema museum is worth a visit. Perched on the edge of the vast Sahara, named after the surrounding Atlas Mountains the Hollywood of Africa is a filming site to some famous blockbusters like the Gladiator, Laurence of Arabia, Cleopatra and the Game of Thrones. We walk through old and new sets amidst framed posters

and images of Russell Crowe from the Oscar winning film the Gladiator. Our Berber guide patiently took us through various sets and explained the history of one of the world’s largest film studios. When in Ouarzazate it is also worth paying a visit to the beautiful 19th century palace, the Taourirt Kasbah which has featured in many movies including the Star Wars.

JEMAA EL FNAA

One of the most active public squares in Africa, the Main Square in Marrakech’s Medina Quarter is popular with both locals and tourists is a hub of activities for traditional singers, musicians, storytellers and merchants sell their wares. The square is under threat of encroachment by the so called economic development and modernisation. To protect this great Moroccan heritage from vanishing, those concerned about its future set up a UNESCO project of masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. On New Year’s eve we walked with thousands of locals and tourists in the Square, enjoying the colors, the lights and the smells wafting from the various local cuisines. We had tagine and couscous in a small local restaurant overlooking the square while enjoying the New Year fireworks, the traditional berber music and songs. We hope efforts would continue to safeguard and protect these cultural and traditional spaces of North Africa.

THE SOUKS IN THE OLD CITY

The souks are a barrage of colors and smell: dazzling eye catching intricate handicrafts, lanterns, pots and pans, leather bags, rich carpets and Berber rugs, and colorful embroidered babouches slippers. Fragrance of perfumes and oils fill the air, a whiff of olives here, a whiff of lemons there. We savor the smell of spices. Nuts, apricots, sweet ripe figs and oranges overflow from wooden carts. Colorful doors lead to local hamams, people sit in cafes drinking Moroccan tea served from silver teapots in colorful little glasses. The souks are a universe in their own right. There is order in chaos, and the only way to enjoy this chaos of colors, sound and smells is to embrace it. At the souks one quickly learns to haggle and how to say “no”. To haggle is fun but exhausting. It seems to be a tradition shopkeepers engage in and eventually enjoy. At the end of the day, when we were a little tired, we just agreed to the first price offered by a merchant. But then he refused and said we must play the game of bargaining. He took out his paper and pen and started drawing a chart. And so we played. The souks are a beehive of activities an full of life just like Morocco. We felt like we were walking in a beautiful dream of the Arabian Nights that have come to life. Morocco is a vast magical land stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the vast Sahara desert. There is a lot to cover and we hope to return and explore this beautiful country some more one day.

A Trip to

AKAGERA PARK

in Rwanda

BY PAULINE BURKEY

W

e had a blast hosting family for the last two weeks here in Rwanda, and had enough time to leave Kigali for a bit and explore the city’s surrounding areas. We went to Musanze, Gisenyi, and a long time must-do on my list, Akagera! If you’re familiar with Rwanda at all, you’ll know that Akagera park is one of Rwanda’s many gems. The 1,200-square kilometer park has out of this world views of lush green scenery that is of course accompanied by Rwanda’s iconic rolling

hills. Though the park still has a long way to go to rival some of the what other parts of East Africa offer, there is no doubt that being surrounded by such beauty in the wildlife and of nature, is nothing short of breathtaking. Look at some of the amazing photos we snapped during our safari. Don’t let the pictures fool you though, because April is NOT the best time to head to the park as that is the time when the heavy rainy season begins, we headed into the park under dense fog, rain and cold temperatures that

we were neither expecting nor prepared for. I conveniently froze my butt off while I wore only sandals and a light H&M button up; but you know what they say…beauty is sometimes pain. As we huddled together in the safari vehicle to keep warm, I kept saying to myself and others that the sun was bound to come up, and surely it did. Just in time for us to spot a beautiful lone giraffe teenager on a lunch break in the savannah. It was just what we needed after a dreary morning.

G U I D E

After spotting the giraffe, our guide informed us that we would not be heading towards the north entrance of the park because the conditions of the road were too dangerous. We also learned during our briefing that off-roading is not allowed in Akagera Park, so if the roads are closed, that is where your safari ends, and because there are only two entrances (south gate and north gate) you’re stuck on some of the same paths throughout. We started back south and our guide got word of some elephants nearby and we

raced off to try and catch the herd in action. Quickly, we spotted them by following the trail of poop and destruction they left behind and were soon surrounded by the African Elephant. The herd was about 25-30 large and consisted of both Adults and babies. We of course reached for our cameras to get some good snapshots in when one of the teenage elephants felt bothered by our presence. Luckily our guide was watching for us and

just as he began to give the warning signs and stomp towards us, we started off for safety. The afternoon let up nicely and the temperatures rose quickly and our game drive turned into being a lovely ride through an incredible park. From monkeys to hippos, zebras and antelope, we got our wildlife fix and enjoyed our day at Akagera. There is always Time for Tea

K

enya is renowned for its tea and visitors to Kenya have a chance to visit first hand where some of the world’s best tea that they love comes from. Nestled among the western highlands is the small town of Kericho. This high hill town receives almost daily rainfall, making this one of the most fertile areas in Kenya. As a result, the slopes around Kericho have long been Kenya’s richest tea growing area. Several large tea corporations established plantations here in the 1950’s. The early tea settlers claimed that Kericho rain showers were so regular that you could set your watch by the weather each afternoon. These ideal conditions continue to produce excellent quality tea. The plantations here create beautiful vistas of rolling green hills of tea, each one interlaced with lines of tea pickers winding through the bushes. At the centre, the small town of Kericho is a charming colonial town reminiscent of the British Hill Stations of India. Visitors will not only get a guided tour on how tea is processed and the various types of tea they will also have an opportunity to taste this beautiful product. There is a couple of hotels in the area like the Kericho Hotel to stay during your visit to Kericho. T O U R I S M
