otswana’s Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most spectacular ecosystems and one of the must visit jewels of Southern Africa. The best time to visit the Okavango is during the high water season from June to October, when the waters arrive from the Angola highlands and animals flock to the delta from the dry Kalahari Desert. Botswana’s summer rains last from December to April, and this is a time of rich growth with an abundance of baby animals and predators hot on their hooves. A journey to the Okavango Delta – deep into Africa’s untouched interior – is like no other. Moving from wetland to dryland – traversing the meandering palm and papyrus fringed waterways, passing palm-fringed islands, and thick woodland, resplendent with lush vegetation, and rich in wildlife – reveals the many facets of this unique ecosystem, the largest intact inland delta in the world. Often referred to as the jewel of the Kalahari the Okavango Delta is fed by the Okavango River. There are three main geographical areas: nn the Panhandle nn the Delta nn dryland

The Panhandle begins at the Okavango’s northern reaches, at Mohembo, extending down for approximately 80 kilometres. Its corridor-like shape is contained within two parallel faults in the Earth’s crust. Here the river runs deep and wide and the swamps are perennially flooded. The dominant vegetation is vast papyrus beds and large stands of phoenix palms. The main tourist attractions of the Panhandle are fishing, birding and visiting the colourful villages that line its western fringes. At Seronga, the fan-shaped Delta emerg-

Many of the smaller islands are grandiose termitaria built by fungus-growing termites, one of 400 termite species in Africa, whose fantastic structures are a source of refuge

and food for many animals. The Delta region of the Okavango can vary in size from 15 000 square kilometres during drier periods to a staggering 22 000 square kilometres during wetter periods. Its dominant plant species are reeds, mokolwane palms, acacia, sycamore fig, sausage trees, rain trees and African mangosteen.

morning and afternoon game drives in open 4 X 4 vehicles or on motorized boats. The landscape traversed on game viewing includes open floodplains, dense mopane bushveld, swamps, lakes, lagoon with numerous islands offering spectacular game viewing and birding opportunities all year round.

At the Delta’s lower reaches, the perennial swamps give way to seasonal swamps and flooded grasslands. To the southeast the third vegetation region becomes evident, as it changes to true dryland. There are three major land masses here: the Matsebi Ridge, Chief’s Island and the Moremi tongue. Here the vegetation is predominantly mophane, acacia and scrub bush and the land is dotted with pans. It is to this region that large numbers of mammals retreat during the dry winter months. Major tourist attractions in the Delta and the dryland areas are game viewing, birding and boating, often in the traditional mokoro. The diversity and numbers of animals and birds can be staggering. A recent overview of the Okavango records 122 species of mammals, 71 species of fish, 444 species of birds, 64 species of reptiles and 1300 species of flowering plants. A successful rhino reintroduction programme in the Okavango now puts

the population of White Rhino at approximately 35, and Black Rhino at 4.

THINGS TO DO IN OKAVANGO DELTA Mokoro Safaris (Traditional Canoeing) Enjoy a day of traditional canoeing and blending with the wildlife in the Delta. Relax and appreciate the scenery as your guide silently navigates your mokoro exploring the magnificence and ecological intricacy of the Okavango Delta. You will witness the flourishing flora lining the edges of the waterways and the lush vegetation encompassed by diversity of African fauna from birdlife, aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. You can explore the delta channels with a mokoro canoe under the guidance of native and experienced mokoro guides and polers. Game Driving and Boating Safaris: Guests can explore the abundant animals surrounding Okavango Delta on

Okavango Nightlife: Sleeping in the wilderness can be an exhilarating experience. You will be treated to sounds of the night in the wilderness of the delta and a watching spree of the nocturnal game that roams the delta. A game drive into the wilderness of the Delta at night is a rare experience as you are welcomed into the backwoods with different nocturnal sounds and enveloped in total darkness only with the guidance of your guide’s spotlight. You can observe the life of night game in your own comfort zone. Share your day’s safari experience with people around or your friends as you sit by the campfire. You will also have the chance to listen to other people’s accounts of their day around the delta. Nature Walks / Walking Safaris: Nature walks and walking safaris with a guide within the Delta is one experience that you will surely treasure. You can walk the grassy and luxuriant grounds of the Delta with varied flora species surrounding you. Guests can observe plants and insect life they have never seen before. Also, there is wildlife roaming around the arid land that you could encounter on foot while in the delta maze thus embracing all sights including tracks, smells and sounds around you. Fishing Excursions: The Okavango Delta offers excellent tiger-fishing, bream, pike, catfish and other species. The standard policy is “catch and release” with an option of having a single catch for dinner or lunch. When G U I D E

staying at a water-based camp, guests can enjoy fishing while basked in the spectacular scenery. Roll into the still waters and feel the morning or evening breeze on your skin. An experienced guide stays with you during the fishing trip and can also train you to cast. Okavango Life and Culture: Have a first-hand experience of the culture and tradition of the people of Okavango. Although this is not a standard tourist attraction or activity, sometimes guests get invited to village homes when visiting concessions close to the villages e.g. Khwai. You may want to interact with the locals and be exposed to traditional lives of the people of Okavango. Helicopter Safaris - Aerial viewing the aerial view of the Delta is fantastic. As the copter rises, you are treated to the vast green of flourishing flora that covers the arid land of the Delta. You can see the remotest portions that cannot be easily toured when you are on the ground and spot wildlife from a bird eye view. The fan shape delta with its many islands, ornamented maze of water channels and waterways will definitely catch your eye. Okavango Heavenly Watching: Another interesting activity to do while in the Okavango Delta is to experience watching the changing of the colour of the skies as the sun sets and rises. The sky colour is majestic especially towards the evening after a sunny day. Also, in the comfort of your lodge or camp, you can gain enlightenment from your guide who can circumnavigate you through the swarming heavens and theme out the most remarkable sights

and clothing, glassware, and San crafts.

WHAT TO BRING Binoculars, torch, insect repellent, lip salve, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Cosmetics, medications, and cigarettes are all available in the major towns, but if specific brand names are needed, it is best to bring enough to last your stay.

VIEWING WILDLIFE Parks and reserves have been established for the protection of the wildlife. Here, in the wilderness of Botswana, it is you who are the intruder and your presence is a privilege. Game viewing is usually at its best during the dry season - in winter (May to August) and in the hot springtime months of September and October, when the animals are concentrating near rivers, pools and waterholes.

CURRENCY The Botswana currency is the Pula (meaning ‘rain’ in Setswana).

VACCINATIONS If you are travelling to Botswana from areas infected with Yellow Fever, you must have a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Otherwise, no other immunisations are required. However, it would be wise to have an updated TPD (tetanus, polio, diphtheria) vaccine, and a Hepatitis A vaccine.

SHOPPING All major towns in Botswana, including Maun and Kasane, have shopping centres and supermarkets, and all basic commodities can easily be purchased. Many regional chain stores operate in Botswana. In addition, there are 24- hour convenience shops at most fuel service stations. There is an increasing range of local arts and crafts on sale in Gaborone, Maun and Kasane and other tourist areas; they include Botswana’s renowned world class baskets, woodcarvings, jewellery, pottery, tapestries, fabrics

It is divided into 100 thebe (meaning ‘shield’ in Setswana). Travellers’ cheques and foreign currency may be changed at banks, bureaux de change, and authorised hotels. The US dollar, Euros, British Pound and the South African Rand are the most easily convertible currencies. Automatic teller machines accept foreign visa cards, but are mostly found in larger towns and cities. Cultural sites and community art and craft outlets usually only accept cash.

A GREAT ESCAPE AT MOUNT GRACE WORDS AND IMAGES BY RACHEL MAHOOA

W

eekends for me are usually the best time to find hidden gems. By “gems” I mean places off the beaten path; I’m usually looking for serenity with a lot of personality; some place hidden enough to make me feel like an explorer and yet amazing enough to make me want to come again. African Pride Mount Grace Country House & Spa is a definite fit for my criteria. Situated approximately 1 hour 20 minutes outside of Johannesburg in the heart of the tranquil Magaliesburg region, Mount Grace is a charming country hotel with a modern twist and I-might-dare-add, world class hydrotherapy spa facilities including a swimming pool, heated Jacuzzi and floatation pool among other things. The staff is friendly and patient making finding your way around the property and its facilities rather pleasant. From being chauffeured to your suite in a go-cart to excellent service at the restaurant, Mount Grace seems to have the keys to excellent customer service.

For the people who travel primarily for a great culinary experience, “Terrace Restaurant” has a simple menu with a good variety for all “foodie” types, and I can certainly put in a good word for the chef. The suites are quite comfortable and certainly don’t have the superficial feel you often feel at hotels and lodges of this calibre. My absolute favourite feature being what I call the “semi-outdoor” bathroom. A fantastic view while soaking in the bathtub, and if there was anything more I could ask for, I was informed of suites with private Jacuzzi’s. Certainly an experience I will be going back for. On the down-side, it is more on the pricey end and will set you back a few thousand rands for the whole experience but it is guaranteed that the Mount Grace experience is far beyond average and offers a variety of amenities that make the visit worth-while. As definite tick in the box for anyone looking to get out of the city for a short left right at the city’s doorstep.

KALAHARI RED DUNE ROUTE: A MEDLEY OF COLOUR expect when going for a sundowner with Vinkie’s Kalahari Experience, one of the tourist establishments on the province’s Kalahari Red Dune Route.

B

illions of grains of sand, fine and deep red in colour, dotted with light-green and yellow shrubs, forming one dune after the other as far as the eye can see … this is the southern Kalahari. Now imagine looking out over this landscape, sipping on a glass of the Northern Cape’s finest wine as the sun starts to set, adding first an orange glow, and later swirls of pink, purple and dark blue to the sky. That is exactly what you can

They also offer cultural tours and tracking experiences with the San on the ‡Khomani San community’s Erin Game Ranch on the R31 road between Askham and Andriesvale. At the entrance to the game ranch, you’ll find Aunt Koera’s Farm Kitchen, where you can stop for a glass of icecold home-made ginger beer and roosterkoek, traditional bread grilled on a fire. The Kalahari Red Dune Route includes several tourist attractions along the R31 and R360 roads in the area south of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier

Park, bordering both Namibia and Botswana. Other highlights on the route are sandboarding or horse riding on the red dunes at Rooiduin Guest Farm & Kalahari Extreme Adventure (image at the top) and meeting meerkats at ethologist Prof. Anne Rasa’s wildlife reserve and meerkat sanctuary, Kalahari Trails. Both these attractions lie on the R360 road between Askham and the transfrontier park. If you’re a keen wildlife photographer and safari lover, the transfrontier park, which stretches across the northernmost tip of the province and into neighbouring Botswana, should definitely be on your itinerary. A combination of red dunes (the colour is attributed to the high iron oxide content of the sand) and stretches of white sand provides the perfect

backdrop for taking pictures of the wildlife and birdlife in the park. The park is home to lion, leopard, cheetah, the African wildcat, giraffe, spotted hyena, gemsbok, springbok, kudu, eland, blue wildebeest and the oh-so-adorable meerkat. Although some roads in the southern part of the park can be driven in a sedan, a 4x4 with high ground clearance is recommended. There are several self-drive routes available but you can also book a guided early-morning or sunset game drive. The Kalahari Red Dune Route is perfect for exploring on your own, or you can opt for one of several packages available – from a four-day glamping, five-day culture and cuisine or six-day 4x4 adventure, to a four-day backpacking and six-day premier experience. The place has a great ambience and atmosphere and with no doubt it’s probably the most buzzing restaurant in Harare at the moment. The place caters for the whole family as you can watch the kids play while enjoying your food, cocktail or nice cup of coffee.

The basis of the food at Queen of Hearts is to make everything from scratch using local or sourced ingredients that are fresh and seasonal, to support the person that actually grew or raised or made the ingredient as much as possible.
