INVESTOUR 2017
gathers over 20 African Ministers of Tourism in Madrid INVESTOUR, a unique platform that brings together tourism businesses from Africa, Europe and the rest of the world on an annual basis has convened more than 20 African Ministers of Tourism at FITUR, the Spanish Tourism Fair. The initiative, now in its 8th edition, has taken place on 19 January in a joint initiative of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Casa Africa. In the last eight years, INVESTOUR has become a unique platform for exchange of information and for business opportunities in the African continent. The event has counted in its 8th edition with the participation of more than 20 Ministers of Tourism of different African countries who debated the opportunities that the sector can bring to the continent. INVESTOUR 2017 focused on two main topics: ‘Technology and design of new touristic products’ and ‘Capacity development for youth and women in tourism.’
“INVESTOUR has demonstrated not only the high relevance of such platforms to advance business, but also the immense potential of the tourism sector in the Africa as reflected in the very positive results that the region had in terms of international tourism in 2016” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. “For Casa Africa is a privilege to be one of the joint partners of INVESTOUR as this event has become a major reference for African tourism investors,” said the Director General of Casa Africa, Luis Padrón. “Our goal is to promote exchanges and to create a platform in which tourism professionals from both shores can meet, discuss, understand each other, and to look

for ways to cooperate and to grow,” he said. As 2017 will be celebrated worldwide as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, sustainable practices have been particularly addressed by the initiatives presented at INVESTOUR. In 2016, Africa welcomed 58 million international tourists, up 8 % from 2015. According to UNWTO’s forecast, this figure will reach 134 million by 2030. The interest in tourism business in the continent has also risen. For instance, the number of Spanish companies based in sub-Saharan Africa has multiplied by seven in the last five years. As highlighted by the World Bank in 2015, the fast economic growth and the significant improvement of the business climate in Africa opens new perspectives for international companies. Since the first edition in 2010, INVESTOUR has brought together over 1500 participants from 46 African countries and more than 900 projects have been presented.

Tomjachu Bush Retreat Family Getaway HOW MUCH QUALITY TIME DO YOU SPEND AS A FAMILY? WITH AN EVER-GROWING LIST OF TASKS TO ACCOMPLISH EACH DAY, IT’S EASY TO LET TIME WITH YOUR PARTNER AND CHILDREN SLIP DOWN YOUR PRIORITIES.
W
hat exactly does ‘quality time’ mean? It’s an expression we hear often but is hard to quantify – every family is different, and its meaning will vary from household to household. For some people it may mean pulling out the board games once a week, for others it’s having in-depth conversations around the dinner table, and for some it may be enjoying an outing together. Whatever it means to you, it’s essential that you make it a priority for yourself, your relationship and your family. Tomjachu Bush Retreat, with its 12 sleeper Valbonne Villa provides a sanctuary for families looking to spend quality time together to create timeless memories for all. As Tomjachu Bush Retreat is a third generation family owned destination, family is what they do best. In the fast pace life we as South Africans lead, it is often difficult to carve out time to spend with your children and parents. Why not escape to the Lowveld bush for a relaxing, family bonding holiday at a 5 star, self-catering luxury resort. Children love vacations. Not because they get to go to Disney World or some other place they’ve idealised in their minds, but because of a much richer treasure. Usually, parents are more relaxed, more fun, more emotionally available. It’s common for kids to say that their favourite sum-
mer memory is something simple, like lying on a blanket looking at the stars with the family. These sweet pleasures are the golden experiences that shape rich childhood memories. Kids also love vacations with extended family. They follow the older cousins around like puppies, and forge lifelong bonds with the kids their own age. These visits often shape their memories of grandparents and provide a sense of heritage. Tomjachu Bush Retreat, just 3.5 hours from Johannesburg, has the perfect family accommodation. Valbonne Villa is in a spectacular location that hangs above the Bekker Mountains, looking towards the Crocodile Valley Gorge. This Villa is a double-storey, dramatic classical South African Lowveld home with cool rambling veranda and six bedroom suites brimming with family antiques, paintings, local art and a lifetime of memorabilia. The Valbonne Villa offers the exquisite luxury of a multi award-winning 5-star TGCSA, self-catering villa suitable for 6 couples or 12 guests sharing – fully serviced. An extensive covered terrace leads to a large braai area set in luscious gardens, with an infinity pool: all overlooking the most spectacular and dramatic views. Tomjachu Bush Retreat also provides you with fantastic activities for all ages. Safari drives, hiking, mountain biking and fishing are great undertakings that will provide great views, moments away from technology and memories. In family relationships, love is really spelt T.I.M.E. Book your family holiday now at the Valbonne Villa, in order to spend quality time with your family in the bush. T O U R I S M

Top 10 Tips for Travelling in Africa
1. Prepare For Extremes Although Africa is the hottest continent on earth, the climate can change radically from one country to the next. Take sunscreen, take hats and light clothing, but take warm jackets, closed shoes, socks and scarves for bitterly cold nights in the bush and snowy season in Lesotho, Morocco and Kenya.
Majestic Africa is our playground, it’s in our veins. Flying hundreds of thousands of customers from Africa, to Africa and around Africa each year, we know that the key to getting the most out of your African adventure isn’t in a khaki uniform or a particularly catchy Johnny Clegg song, it’s in the details…
2. Pack Snacks If you’re travelling outside of the main cities, shops and restaurants can be scarce. Driving for hundreds of kilometres to reach your resort, daylong game drives or hours in the desert mean it’s always a good idea to bring plenty of food and water along. For those with sensitive stomachs, snacks are also a great idea when the alternative option is somewhat dubious. 3. Bargain Your Heart Out Africa can be as expensive or affordable as you want it to be. Often goods are priced quite high because of the influx of European and American tourists, but locals expect to negotiateit’s a part of the culture and is not seen as offensive. 4. Don’t Be Eaten Alive Mosquitos carry diseases, so they pose a greater threat than unbearable itchiness. Protect yourself from these pests by using excessive mosquito repellent, sleeping under a mosquito net, wearing long clothes after dark and taking anti-malarial tablets a few days before, during and up to four weeks after your trip, just in case you do get bitten. 5. Rethink Your Accommodation Planning a trip around Africa on your own can be daunting. Where to stay, how to get there, hiring cars (because the public transport is often poor) and local customs – it can get very confusing and very expensive, quite quickly. For less worry and more holiday, book a package that suits your travel style and let the experts show Africa off to you, while you put your feet up and enjoy! For more info on African travel packages, contact our travel agents on 021 020 0559.
6. Travel Insurance Is A Must This is important as medical facilities are very limited in certain African countries, and if you’re out in the bush, evacuation by helicopter could be necessary in a medical emergency or accident. Doctors and hospitals often request immediate cash payment for medical treatment and insurance will ensure you get most if not all of your money back once you get home. 7. Be Cash Wise ATM’s and credit card machines cannot be relied on while travelling to Africaparticularly in more rural countries. Bring enough cash for local transport, informal trading, local stores and tips. Don’t keep all your cash in one place either in case anything should happen to your wallet. It’s good to know you have some backup money hidden elsewhere – ideally with backup copies of your travel documents. 8. Stay Connected Keep in contact with the world while you’re away by packing a universal adaptor and investing in a solar charger in case there is no electricity or a power outage.
9. Keep Healthy Before hopping on a plane, be sure to check with your doctor what vaccinations or tablets you will need when travelling to your chosen countries. The main diseases to watch out for- both spread by mosquitos- are Malaria, which can be prevented with anti-malarial tablets, and Yellow Fever which can be avoided with a jab at least 10 days before travelling, at your local travel clinic. Many African countries require proof of the Yellow Fever vaccination before entry! 10. Think Beyond Safari African safaris are on the top of many a bucket list for a good reason, but while you’re there, take the time to enjoy some of the other things that diverse, unique, fascinating Africa has to offer. 4X4 adventures, vibrant cities with glittering nightlife, pristine beaches, extreme sports for every thrill seeker, rich culture and wonderful, welcoming people.
The Kingdom of Swaziland beckons you to bring the family and soak up the beauty of this nation.
S
waziland offers a family holiday with a unique African flair, where a range of affordable quality accommodation is gentle on the budget and a choice of activities keep kids of all ages busy during their stay. A mere four and a half hours drive from Johannesburg, Swaziland more than makes up for its size with endless attractions, activities and its currency is linked on a one to one basis to the Rand which is accepted throughout the country. For the ultimate Swaziland family experience, combine practical accommodation with adventure and education, with an overnight stay in one of the many traditional bee hive huts located around Swaziland. The huts can be used as an adventurous and cultural alternative to the many traditional tented campgrounds located around Swaziland. For those who can’t do without the comforts of home, book a weekend in huts which have been converted into comfortable double or twin rooms, complete with electricity, en-suite bathrooms and airconditioning! Most of the Nature Reserves, Parks and
Wildlife Sanctuary areas within Swaziland, offer the option of comfortable, self-catering accommodation, which allow families to travel within their budget. From camp grounds to log cabins in the bush, upmarket chalets in the mountains, to luxurious riverside tents on wide wooden decks. Self-catering family accommodation can take any form in this diverse destination.
dren are able to cycle along the nature trails, getting up close and personal with the animals in the area. One of the most spectacular ways to see Swaziland is on horseback and outrides through the mountains or plantations are available for all levels of rider, including those who have never ridden before. Children are well catered for and all necessary safety equipment is provided.
A unique warm and welcoming sense of hospitality awaits you at any of Swaziland’s many guest houses, where a bed and breakfast stay allows you to ensure that the whole family starts the day with a home cooked meal. From stylish, upmarket, colonial style properties, to home stays with the members of the community, you’re spoiled for choice.
Swaziland has a reputation for a variety of thrilling adventure activities that once again belies its small size. Caving, canopy tours, climbing, abseiling, tubing and white water rafting test even the most daring young adventurer. And although there are no beaches, water sports rank high on Swaziland’s To-Do list.
Keeping the kids busy won’t be a problem. During the summer, the rivers become a floating playground and adventure seekers of all ages are seen gently bouncing down rivers in inflatable tubes, or for the older age groups, shooting the rapids in white water rafts. Mountain biking trails have been established all over Swaziland, including through many of the Parks and Reserves, where chil-

An innovative WTM AFRICA 2017 promises to be Extraordinary!
S
The leading travel trade show in Southern Africa, WTM Africa 2017 promises to bring together travel trade, industry stakeholders, international media and important buyers with innovative new systems and events. “Over the past three years WTM Africa has seen visitor numbers grow, with a 23% increase in 2016, resulting in a 19% increase in travel professionals overall,” says Chardonnay Marchesi, General Manager of Africa Travel Week. “This growth alone has pushed us as a team to think on how we would innovate for WTM Africa 2017!” Talking on innovation, official organisers of WTM Africa Reed Exhibitions, has taken trade, media and buyer feedback to enhance WTM Africa 2017 to present an even better exhibition than in previous years. “We’re delighted to be hosting WTM Africa 2017 in April - a great month to visit Cape Town, where everybody wants to be naturally - as well as the ideal time to secure bookings ahead of the peak periods we see across the continent for travel,” furthers Marchesi. In the lead up to WTM Africa 2017, the Reed Exhibitions team has been hard at work presenting buyer insights back to the local industry. “Our specialised focus on the African continent will bring the diversity and opportunity for the travel sector to the fore in 2017, with over 600 exhibitors and 5,000 attendees. In 2015, we estimated that a significant US $333-million worth of business was conducted. While we are still calculating our figure for 2016, our in-depth research tells us that although a great deal of business is written on site, it doubles after 6 months and remains on this level for future projection.” 2017 will see an increased number of international and local buyers in attendance at WTM Africa says Marchesi. “We have tightened up our qualification criteria for buyers to ensure that we have the right people with purchasing authority at WTM Africa 2017. We are pushing T O U R I S M
for significant growth in buyers in attendance, with a 49% split from Europe and 11% from the USA, key target markets for South Africa’s tourism sector. Emerging markets will also be represented at WTM Africa 2017.” In addition, WTM Africa’s ability to adapt to the fast pace of the travel sector and trade’s demand of an exhibition mean that new buyers are constantly being targeted, new sectors are constantly being added, and repeat buyers with buying power are being catered to simultaneously. What this means is that WTM Africa 2017 will focus heavily on creating an ideal environment in which business deals can be brokered. For this reason, the following innovations have already been made ahead of 2017: A host of international speakers from across the globe will focus on pertinent topics affecting the modern travel industry, as well as look to identify trends in the African travel market ● New to WTM Africa in 2017, the Outbound Conference Theatre will invite travel agents to learn more about the international destinations that are right on our doorstep ● Enhancements have been made to the Speed Networking programme, with each session extended to 90 minutes from 60 minutes in 2016. The matchmaking and diary system has also been improved with the functionality to request meetings with fellow exhibitors and the ability to block out times in the diary. ● Exhibitor workshops ahead of WTM 2017 will be conducted early in the year, while a White Glove Service means that training can also be done right in your office. Members of the travel trade and its associated media excited about attending next year’s show in Cape Town are encouraged to register soon for WTM Africa 2017 by visiting www. wtmafrica.com and submitting their applications. THE PRESIDENT HOTEL WELCOMES SUMMER WITH NEW SOMMELIER, MENU AND WINE LIST

F
rom the little town of Riebeek Kasteel to the President Hotel in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, Sommelier Job Jovo is the newest family member to the hotel. In 2010, Job began his hospitality career as a waiter at The Royal Hotel, the oldest in the Western Cape. As the hotel always hosted the famous Swartland Revolution wine festival, Job was exposed to some of the most successful winemakers in the country, including Eben Sadie (Sadie Family Wines), Chris Mullineux (Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines) and Tongai Joseph Dhafana (La Colombe). This coupled with the temptation of the surrounding vineyards of Swartland, inspired Job to pursue the hospitality industry further and see what the world of wines had to offer.
cooked in a creamy black bean and coco-
In September, 2016, Job spread his wings and joined the President Hotel. “I love the energy of the hotel and I look forward to contributing to the development of the wine culture, especially with their newly launched wine journey”. Job’s focus will be on the new wine list at the hotel, the cocktails and the new artisanal gin collection. The new wine list at the President Hotel includes over 14 different wine farms, providing guests with the best wine selections in the country. Some of the wine farms include Buitenverwachting, Leopard’s Leap, De Grendel, Rickety Bridge, Blaauwklippen and more. With great wines comes great food, ideal for pairing with the hotel’s newly launched summer menu, creating even more reason to visit the hotel. Guests can treat themselves from any number of their mouthwatering starters from prosciutto, citrus, buffalo mozzarella, avocado and basil on a ciabatta or perhaps west coast mussels
“I took my first step by enrolling with the Cape Wine Academy in 2013 which I am very grateful for as they equipped me with an extensive knowledge on the South African wines. I became very passionate and very hungry to learn more about wine and therefore enrolled with the Wines & Spirit Education Trust, governed by the International Wines Education Centre based in London and acquired my WEST level 3 in 2015.” From there, Job became a member of the South African Sommelier Association in 2015, being trained by experienced Sommeliers such as Higgo Jacobs and Joakim Hansi Blackadder.
With Job’s expensive experience and passion for wine, paired with the hotel’s new delectable summer menu, guests will undoubtedly leave their stay at the President Hotel with an experience to remember.
Job’s wine journey became one of excitement when he began working at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl, early 2015. They hosted some of the biggest wine challenges such as the Old Mutual TroT O U R I S M
nut sauce. For mains, guests can choose between a variety of vegetarian, seafood and meat dishes – wild mushroom risotto with parmesan shavings, salt and pepper squid with skinny fries, chargrilled lime and tartare sauce or a 300g smoked pork kassler, buttered pomme purée, roasted apples and mustard sauce. To end if all off, indulge in something a little sweeter such as their Tonka bean panna cotta with honeycomb and berries. If you’re looking for something a little lighter, The President has got you covered with their charcuterie platter, perfect with pairing the new wine selection or try a gourmet sandwich at Botany Café.
