ABOUT JASPER

JASPER'S RICH HISTORY IS FILLED WITH THE ADVENTURES OF INDIGENOUS TRIBES, FUR TRADE EXPLORERS, EARLY SETTLERS, RAILWAY PIONEERS AND OUTFITTER GUIDES WHO CREATED A TOWN AMIDST THE GRAND ROCKIES. TODAY, VISITORS CAN CONNECT WITH this unique past at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives.

CONNECTING W ITH JASPER'S PAST

1907: 13,000 square kilometres of land set aside to establish Jasper National Park. 1911: Train station was built – a heritage building that VIA rail now operates out of. The town of Fitzhugh, named after the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Vice President, was founded around the train station. 1913: Jasper becomes the official name of town to coincide with name of park. What is now the Jasper Visitor Information Centre was built, housing the first park superintendent. 1915: Tent City was built at Lac Beauvert during construction of the railway, consisting of ten tents located on the shores of the lake and a main dining area. This is now Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. In honour of this history, a pub in which special events are often times hosted at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, was named Tent City Pub. 1928: Iconic Maligne Lake Boat House was built by Donald “Curly” Phillips, a guide and outfi tter in the area. Curly also finished construction of first Maligne Lake Tour Boat, The Leah. Today, one of Curly’s famous red canoes can be seen at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives. 1930: Jasper Park officially established as a national park. 1938: Curly resided in his boathouse until his death in an avalanche at the age of 54. 1984: Jasper National Park established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2011: Jasper National Park established as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. FROM PAST TO PRESENT, JASPER, CANADA’S base of adventure, is still a place explorers far and wide are drawn to. Take yourself on an adventure into the past by visiting the Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives!

ABOUT JASPER

WHETHER YOU FIND YOURSELF EXPLORING JASPER IN THE SUMMER, FALL, WINTER OR SPRING, ADVENTURE IS ABUNDANT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ENDLESS ALL SEASON TRAILS, EPIC BLUEHUED LAKES, AND EXCEPTIONAL DOWN-HILL AND CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING TERRAIN ARE JUST A TASTE OF WHAT’S TO BE DISCOVERED IN OUR BACKYARD.

BE PREPA RED: MOUNTA IN W E ATHER

BUT BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT, BE PREPARED to take on the day. The weather in the mountains fluctuates from season to season, causing some activities to only be available during certain times of the year. SPRING COMES TO THE VALLEY BOTTOM in April and reaches the high country by June. It brings wildflowers and gushing rivers, which make it the ideal time for rafting.

THE REAL ROCKIES: WHERE WE HAVE MORE THAN FOUR SEASONS.” SUMMER DAYS ARE TEMPERATE AND LONG, with the sun setting late and rising early. July is the warmest month, with temperatures around 23°C, perfect for camping! FALL COMES IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, bringing beautiful autumn colours, clear sky and cooler temperatures. Fall weather conditions are fabulous for hiking, biking, and star-gazing. WINTER BRINGS COLD, SNOWY WEATHER that can quickly change to warmer Chinook winds and Alberta sunshine. Winter temperatures vary, but January is usually the coldest month with temperatures rarely rising higher than -8°C. Time to hit the slopes!

Friendly and knowledgeable, this team receives award-winning training to make sure that they’re as prepared as possible to help visiting explorers make the most of their time in Canada’s base of adventure. FAWN FURLOT TE, TRAVEL COUNSELLOR supervisor and born-and-raised Jasper local, is passionate about sharing her love of her hometown with visitors. “JASPER NATIONAL PARK IS LIKE A HIDDEN gem,” says Fawn. “There is so much to discover here that no matter how long you’ve lived here, or how many times you visit, you will always find more to explore.” TRAVEL COUNSELLORS ARE JUST AS HAPPY to help you find the right activities and attractions for your individual adventure level as they are to share their own personal favourite must-sees. Fawn is always torn between two epic experiences.

“I LOVE THE JASPER SKYTRAM AND THE Glacier Adventure,” she admits. “Taking the SkyTram is the easiest way to get on top of a mountain, so you can get those amazing views without having to do a long hike. And when you’re on the Athabasca glacier, with the mountains so close, you feel so small. You really get a good sense of how massive the mountains are.” IN A PLACE AS AWE-INSPIRING AS JASPER, it’s easy to see why the travel counsellors are keen to help. “We love how excited and happy everyone is to be here and love to feed off of it,” says Fawn. “We always have updated information on events, attractions and activities. We also get to experience many different things during our training, so we love sharing those personal experiences!” Let one of our travel counsellors help you plan your next Jasper adventure!

THINGS TO DO

ONE OF JASPER’S NEWEST ADVENTURE TRAVEL COMPANIES FOUND ITS BEGINNINGS IN THE COMBINATION OF LIFELONG PASSION AND LONG-TIME FRIENDSHIP.

THE WATER IS WA ITING

“RAFTING IS WHAT STARTED IT ALL,” SAYS Brett Haug. “Brad and I actually met as raft guides.” BRETT AND BRAD MAKE UP HALF OF THE team that gave life to Wild Current Outfi tters, which now provides a variety of raft and canoe trips as well as rental gear to Jasper’s visiting explorers. Sean and Mike make up the other half, and together all four bring decades of guiding experience and enthusiasm for Jasper’s lakes and rivers to the table.

RAFTING IS WHAT STARTED IT ALL, BRAD AND I ACTUALLY MET AS RAFT GUIDES.” BRETT HAUG, OWNER - WILD CURRENT OUTFITTERS

ADVENTURE SEEKERS CAN TAKE THEIR pick of experiences. 3- and 6-day overnight raft trips along the Snake Indian River will see you packing in on horseback before enjoying an awe-inspiring trip back along the water. Or follow in the footsteps of Canada’s First Nations Peoples and voyageurs and experience Jasper’s lakes and rivers by canoe. Half-day trips are available for groups of 2 to 8 and all of the gear you’ll need is provided. IF YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN HOW to backcountry camp but aren’t sure where to start, Wild Current Outfi tters has got you covered there too. Once you book your site through Parks Canada, the team can get you set up with a canoe, any equipment you’ll need and routeing instructions to help prepare you for your own adventure in the wild. WHETHER YOU FIND YOUR WAY OUT ONTO the water this year or not, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the guys from Wild Current Outfi tters. They’ll be the ones making their way along the glacier fed lakes and rivers in an amazing 26-foot voyageur-style cedar strip canoe that they built by hand!

WILDLIFE SAFE-VIEWING TIPS

WILDLIFE GUARDIANS. Listen for safety information on wildlife along the roadsides or in campgrounds on Jasper National Park's Wildlife Guardian radio station. Tune in to 96.7 FM (English) or 94.7 FM (French) when you see this road sign.

Spring is a great time to see Jasper’s abundant wildlife, including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, coyote, and black and grizzly bear. In order to keep them wild and undisturbed, follow our safe-viewing tips: Consider not stopping If you stop: Pull over where it is safe to do so; Use your hazard lights to alert other drivers; Observe and photograph from the safety of your car; Remain a respectf ul distance from the animals. Things to remember: Keep a lengthy distance away from wildlife (3-10 bus lengths). Remember they are wild and unpredictable. Female elk have no antlers and are especially aggressive in the spring when they are protecting their young (May through June). Male elk have antlers and are especially aggressive in the fall during mating season (September through October). If hiking or biking, make noise - carry bear spray and know how to use it.

SPRING FLOWERS Before the snow has melted, species like prairie crocus are already emerging from the ground. At the beginning of April, this flower blooms along trails 6 and 6b. In mid-May, the calypso orchid brings colour to the forest floor. Growing among mosses, this beautiful orchid can be found along several trails in the montane forest. We recommend observing them from a distance since calypso orchids are very susceptible to disturbance. As summer approaches, orchid lovers should explore the Flower Trail (#10a) near Sixth Bridge. This short 2.1-km loop is home to many species of orchids, such as the sparrow’s-egg, the spotted orchid and the yellow lady’s-slipper. When exploring at higher elevations, keep an eye out for globeflowers. This species pushes through the snow to bloom.

THINGS TO DO

JASPER IS A PLACE I RETURN TO TIME AND TIME AGAIN. IT’S MY OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND; WHERE ADVENTURE CAN BE FOUND AROUND EVERY CORNER. WITH A DAY TO SPARE, AND A DESIRE TO explore, I made my way back to the real Rockies. And this time with a goal: to experience all that I could in 24-hours.

24 HOURS IN JASPER: W INTER

SCENIC DRIVE I STARTED THE MORNING DRIVE CHASING the Northern Lights, watching the greens and blues dance across the sky – a truly awe-inspiring natural wonder. As the Auroras disappeared, the dark outline of peaks became visible, and with that, the billions of stars.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING ONCE IN TOWN, I HEADED TO PYRAMID Lake Resort, grabbed some cross-country ski rentals, and hit the trails. A few strides in I thought to myself, “This is one of the greatest winter sports". Gliding with ease across the frozen lake is special. Add to that the sun rising over the mountains around you, and it becomes uniquely special.

ICE CLIMBING IM A GINE S TA R T ING A N ICE CL IMB B Y rappelling sixty-feet and not knowing what’s beneath you. Delving into Maligne Canyon is surreal: the air gets a bit humid, the sunlight dims, and you become surrounded by a cathedral of rock and ice.

MALIGNE CANYON ICE WALK A GUIDE AND I HEADED DOWNSTREAM, treading through the high rock walls. This tour is a photographer’s paradise; every bend revealed blue hued ice formations and hidden scenic gems.

CULTURE

INSPIRED BY THE REAL ROCKIES. THE MAJESTY AND NATURAL WONDER OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS HAVE LONG BEEN A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR ARTISTS. FOR ARTIST AND FILMMAKER, WENDY WACKO, this inspiration manifested itself in the creation of Mountain Galleries, one of the largest, multilocation commercial galleries in Western Canada. “THE SUCCESS OF MOUNTAIN GALLERIES IS the diversity of our collection,” says Wendy, who has poured her more than 35 years of arts experience into the space. “We have everything from abstract impressionism to magical realism.” FOR OVER 20 YEARS, MOUNTAIN GALLERIES has supported and promoted Canadian artists and their breathtaking work. Much of the art found in the galleries evokes the raw beauty of the Rocky Mountains, although other kinds of paintings, sculpture, and mixed media pieces can be found there as well. “WE ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF SELLING memories,” Wendy says, speaking of the multitude of mountain-inspired art available for purchase at each of the Fairmont-based locations in Jasper, Whistler, and Banff. “You walk into the gallery and you see imagery that reminds you of the holiday that you’re experiencing.” INTERESTED IN MAKING ART A PART OF YOUR Jasper experience? Try a Heli-Painting package with Mountain Galleries and be flown into an awe-inspiring remote sanctuary via helicopter to paint in the lush wilderness of the real Rockies. MARMOT MEADOWS WINTER HUB

Inspiring the exploration of untracked territory, snowshoeing is one of winter’s most accessible activities. Aft er a fresh snowfall, take in some of Jasper’s 200 km of valley trails on snowshoes! Favourite routes are signed on the Pyramid Bench and provide access to great viewpoints (10 km in total). For those of you seeking solitude, deep snow and beautiful rolling terrain, venture down the Icefields Parkway to Sunwapta Falls (52 km). Strap on your snowshoes and head into Big Bend Campground for the day (12.8 km return). If you are looking for even more adventure, travel further south along the stunning Parkway until you reach the Columbia Icefields area (104 km). The Toe of the Glacier route (4 km unmarked) has magnificent views of the Athabasca Glacier and will leave you in awe–well worth the trek!

FAT BIKING Fat biking is becoming more and more popular each winter. Oversized tires let a bike roll where it has not rolled before. Jasper has 10 km of flat-packed trails around the townsite, perfect for fat biking. Riders are also permitt ed on frozen lakes. Monitor the ice thickness and head out for a new winter adventure! Many local businesses in town off er bike rentals so you can find out the skinny on fat biking.

Are you looking for a place to combine all outdoor winter activities? Marmot Meadows Winter Hub is the place to bring your friends and family for a day of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating and fat biking. Warm up to a campfire, relax in our traditional tipi and enjoy a warming shelter (oft en times laden with hot chocolate). On the weekends, our Parks Canada interpreters deliver interactive programs during both day and night for those looking to learn about wildlife, our dark sky preserve or simply how to start a fire with flint and steel.

IT 'S A LWAY S HOPP Y HOUR IN JASPER THE PREMIUM BEERS BREWED AT JASPER BREWING Co. have grown from roots grounded deep in tradition. The dedicated brew-masters use timetested recipes that include hops and malts sourced from around the world, along with the differentiating ingredient: pure glacial water.

DID YOU KNOW? DUE TO JASPER’S ALTITUDE, THE BOILING POINT is between 96 and 97 degrees Celsius – which is an important thing to know when brewing beer here!

HISTORY • Opened in the spring of 2005 and was Canada’s first National Park Brewery. • Three of the founders were born and raised in Jasper.

COMMUNITY JASPER BREWING CO. IS A STRONG CONTRIBUTOR to the community. In addition to rotating seasonal ales, the brew-master also creates a signature beer

for local events and festivals, such as the Dark Sky Dark Rye beer made specifically for the Dark Sky Festival in October. THEY ALSO TEAM UP WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS and charities in order to create community beers, in which profits from each pint sold goes back to the organization or charity in which it was crafted for. Take their HIV West Yellowhead Red IPA brew which saw $1 from each pint sold donated to the harm reduction not-for-profit that works to create supportive environments for those at risk, infected or effected by HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and other sexually transmitted infections in the region. VISIT THE PUB AND ENJOY YOUR FAVOURITE sports action on one of the seven plasma TV's or relax and dine with your family in the restaurant. There’s something for everyone! WANT TO SEE THE PROCESS OF HOW THE BEER IS made? Ask for a complimentary brew-tour!

W HERE TO STAY

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT DOGS ARE A PERSON’S BEST FRIEND, WHICH MAKES LEAVING FIDO BEHIND DURING VACATIONS ESPECIALLY TOUGH.

H AV E PE TS, W ILL TR AV EL

THIS IS WHY MANY HOTEL AND CABIN accommodations in Jasper go out of their way to embrace our four-legged family members.

WE KNOW THAT FAMILIES COME IN ALL FORMS...” BERNARD SCHNEIDER, GM - MOUNTAIN PARK LODGES

ALL SIX OF MOUNTAIN PARK LODGES’ Jasper properties are proud to be pet friendly. “AT MOUNTAIN PARK LODGES, WE KNOW that familIes come in all forms. Our furry friends are a huge part of some of our guests’ lives, and therefore they are a priority for us as well.” said Bernhard Schneider, general manger. THE FAIRMONT JASPER PARK LODGE IS another property that would rather you not leave Fluffy at home when you go on your Jasper adventure. Pet-friendly rooms, supplies, sitters, and even a 4 km walking trail are all at your disposable, which means everyone’s stay is sure to be happy and comfortable.
