Sports Tourism in Africa: An Interview with Diego Antunes
Diego, how do you think kart racing can help bring more visitors to South Africa?
Hi! I think kart racing is really exciting and fun, and it can show people how cool South Africa is. When people see how awesome our tracks are and how much fun we have racing, they might want to come here to watch or even try racing themselves. It’s a great way to show off our beautiful country and the exciting things you can do here.
What has it been like racing in different parts of South Africa? Do you have any favourite places to race?
Racing in different parts of South Africa is amazing because every track is different. I love the Celso Scribante Raceway in Gqeberha because it’s really technical with lots of fast bends and tight turns. The track is also close to the airport, so it’s easy for visitors to get there. Every place we race has something special, but Celso Scribante is my favourite.
How has TrevPAR World helped you in your racing career?
TrevPAR World has been awesome! They help me with sponsorship, which means I can race in more competitions and get better equipment. They also give me lots of support and encouragement. It’s great to have a team that believes in me and helps me get better at racing.
How do you think your success in racing can inspire other kids in South Africa to follow their sports dreams?
I hope my success shows other kids that they can achieve their dreams if they work hard and have fun. Racing has taught me that with practice and dedication, you can get better and reach your goals. I want other kids to see that if I can do it, they can too!
What are some challenges you have faced while racing, and how have they helped you become a better racer?
One big challenge is racing against older and more experienced drivers. It’s tough, but it makes me try harder and learn faster. I’ve also had to learn how to stay calm and focused during races, even when things go wrong. These challenges make me a better racer because they teach me to keep pushing and never give up.
What are your future goals in kart racing, and how do you think they can help show South Africa as a great place for sports?
My future goal is to become a champion in kart racing and maybe move up to racing cars one day. I want to show that South African racers can compete with the best in the world. By achieving my goals, I hope to bring more attention to our country and show everyone that South Africa is a great place for sports and talented athletes.
