Women in Q&A Corner

“By using my growth journey as a true reflection

As a female leader in a traditionally male-dominated field, what challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

In 2018 I started my journey in hospitality, back then I was both young and female. I had to identify my unique offering to a vast and growing industry. Overtime I gained confidence in my unique skills and gifts as a direct result of support from other leaders in the industry, some of which were males. It was a challenge but one that I could conquer because of great mentorship and continuous training. My unwavering passion for the hospitality industry allowed me to see myself and other woman beyond the culture set boundaries and stereotypes. I can now proclaim that the norms and stereotypes that used to exist in the industry are being ceased by innovation, woman empowerment and other non-discrimination policies and procedures.

In your opinion, what unique perspectives or strengths do women bring to leadership roles in the hospitality sector, and how do these contribute to the success of your hotel?

In my view and from my leadership style, I ensure that I create an inclusive environment - By doing so, I get more commitment from my team/s.

By using my growth journey as a true reflection of what can be achieved by a female, starting from the very bottom of the industry, I build Confidence within my team/s that they too can achieve their desired growth and / or position within the industry.

Voco

How do you see the future of gender diversity and inclusion in the hospitality sector, and what advice would you give to other aspiring female leaders in this industry?

We need to go beyond ranks and gender stereotypes to create a truly inclusive environment. The divide between ranks of staff in the hospitality industry needs to be broken down. At voco we have an inclusive working environment which creates open communication between all levels of staff.

My advice is to find common values amongst your colleagues, it will make the relationships at work stronger. We spend the majority of our day within the workplace, so it’s really a no-brainer to make sure that it is a positive, healthy environment.

Gender is not a big deal anymore; if you have the passion and willing to put in the hard work, you will succeed. But you cannot rest on your laurels, take advantage to opportunities to cross-train in other departments, and this may be in your own time. Learn new skills, look and listen and take risks. Apply for vacancies, be open to discuss opportunities with your manager and have a development plan in place. You may not always be successful when applying for position, disappointment is part of the journey but don’t stop trying, it’s is all part of life lessons.

In your opinion, what unique perspectives or strengths do women bring to leadership roles in the hospitality sector, and how do these contribute to the success of your hotel?

I believe that everyone brings a unique perspective to a leadership role in our industry. The success of our hotel is driven by building strong networks and forming valuable connections that foster guest loyalty and strategic alliances. We promote open communication, seek and provide mentorship, and create a supportive environment for personal and professional growth. These qualities ensure that our hotel not only meets but exceeds guest expectations, positioning us as a leader in the industry.

Traditional roles in the hospitality industry are evolving, with an increasing number of women taking on positions as chefs, sommeliers, and safari guides, among others. My advice is to have confidence in your abilities and persist in finding the role that suits you best. Sports Tourism in Africa: An Interview with Diego Antunes

Diego, how do you think kart racing can help bring more visitors to South Africa?

Hi! I think kart racing is really exciting and fun, and it can show people how cool South Africa is. When people see how awesome our tracks are and how much fun we have racing, they might want to come here to watch or even try racing themselves. It’s a great way to show off our beautiful country and the exciting things you can do here.

What has it been like racing in different parts of South Africa? Do you have any favourite places to race?

Racing in different parts of South Africa is amazing because every track is different. I love the Celso Scribante Raceway in Gqeberha because it’s really technical with lots of fast bends and tight turns. The track is also close to the airport, so it’s easy for visitors to get there. Every place we race has something special, but Celso Scribante is my favourite.

How has TrevPAR World helped you in your racing career?

TrevPAR World has been awesome! They help me with sponsorship, which means I can race in more competitions and get better equipment. They also give me lots of support and encouragement. It’s great to have a team that believes in me and helps me get better at racing.

How do you think your success in racing can inspire other kids in South Africa to follow their sports dreams?

I hope my success shows other kids that they can achieve their dreams if they work hard and have fun. Racing has taught me that with practice and dedication, you can get better and reach your goals. I want other kids to see that if I can do it, they can too!

What are some challenges you have faced while racing, and how have they helped you become a better racer?

One big challenge is racing against older and more experienced drivers. It’s tough, but it makes me try harder and learn faster. I’ve also had to learn how to stay calm and focused during races, even when things go wrong. These challenges make me a better racer because they teach me to keep pushing and never give up.

What are your future goals in kart racing, and how do you think they can help show South Africa as a great place for sports?

My future goal is to become a champion in kart racing and maybe move up to racing cars one day. I want to show that South African racers can compete with the best in the world. By achieving my goals, I hope to bring more attention to our country and show everyone that South Africa is a great place for sports and talented athletes.

The Impact of Sports Tourism A Growing Industry

Sports tourism has emerged as a significant aspect of the global tourism market, and Africa is no exception. With its rich sports culture and diverse sporting events, the continent is gradually becoming a hotspot for sports enthusiasts and travelers alike. This article explores the multifaceted impact of sports tourism in Africa, ranging from economic benefits to cultural exchanges.

Economic Impact

One of the most notable effects of sports tourism is its potential for revenue generation. Major sporting events, such as the Africa Cup of Nations or the Cape Town International Marathon, draw thousands of spectators, resulting in a substantial influx of tourists. These events boost local economies as visitors spend money on accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment. According to recent studies, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa generated approximately $3.6 billion in economic impact, showcasing the immense financial benefits of hosting international sports events.

In addition to direct revenue, sports tourism also creates job opportunities. Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, experience increased demand, leading to job creation in various sectors. Furthermore, the infrastructure improvements made for these events—such as better roads, airports, and sports facilities—not only enhance the tourism experience but also benefit local residents long after the events have concluded.

Promotion of Destinations

Sports tourism has the power to promote lesser-known destinations, shifting the focus away from traditional tourist hotspots. For instance, lesser-known cities that host major sporting events often see a surge in tourism, which can help diversify local economies. Events like the DStv ECAF Champions League not only attract football fans but also put the host cities on the map, encouraging year-round tourism.

Cultural Exchange

Beyond the economic benefits, sports tourism fosters cultural exchange among diverse groups of people. Major sporting events often showcase local cultures, traditions, music, and cuisine, providing visitors with a unique experience that goes beyond the game itself. This exchange not only enriches the visitor experience but also deepens mutual appreciation and understanding between different cultures.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite its benefits, sports tourism in Africa faces several challenges. For instance, the environmental impact of large-scale events must be considered, as can the strain on local infrastructure due to sudden increases in visitor numbers. It’s crucial that stakeholders engage in careful planning and management to ensure the sustainability of tourism while maximizing economic opportunities.

Tourism in Africa:

Case Studies

Looking at successful examples of sports tourism in Africa, the 2010 FIFA World Cup stands out as a landmark event that placed South Africa on the global stage. The tournament led to significant investments in infrastructure, and its success paved the way for future international events. Other noteworthy instances include the annual Cape Town International Marathon and the Soweto Derby, which draw large crowds and bolster local economies.

Future Prospects

As interest in sports tourism continues to grow, Africa has the potential to host even more international sporting events. Adventure sports and eco-tourism are gaining traction, opening new avenues for tourism alongside traditional sports. With strategic development, sports tourism can thrive, benefitting not just the economies but also the communities involved.

Conclusion

The impact of sports tourism in Africa is evident in its potential for economic growth, cultural exchange, and destination promotion. By leveraging its rich sporting culture and investing in infrastructure and sustainability, Africa can embrace this growing sector, ensuring that it benefits not only tourists but also local communities for generations to come.

Exploring The Thrills of Sports Tourism in Africa

The value chain in the sports ecosystem is founded on three pillars; capacity building, infrastructure and manufacturing. The focus on athletes in Africa as the primary export has shifted focus from strengthening a value chain that can enable innovation and home-grown products that can be consumed by western markets, tailored to resolve the problems around sports in Africa.

My passion for human capital development inspired me to transition into an impactful role that empowers African SMEs and youth to provide essential services and meet the human resource needs to Africa’s first growing sports infrastructure.

Could you elaborate on some of the specific programs you have designed for human capital development in sports within Rwanda?

The sports eco-system in Rwanda has made significant strides in human capacity development over the last decade thanks to a collaborative and enabling environment with both the public and private sector working together to elevate the standard of services and experiences for sports and tourism enthusiasts visiting the destination.

Working for Global Events Africa, a women-led enterprise that is at the forefront, championing inclusivity of youth and women in sports through investing in and promoting sporting events like the IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda, has allowed me the privilege in my role as the Marketing and Communications Director, to design programs that bridge the technical skills gap of Rwandan youth in the sports industry. Through the organisation’s volunteer and internship program, 450 youth have been exposed to new ways of working, innovation and career opportunities in key sports events over the last 2 years.

What major challenges have you encountered while building the sports ecosystem, and how have you overcome them?

Stakeholders in the tourism sector provide key essential support services for major sports events in the destination. Strengthening the value chain requires niche sports entrepreneurs and career professionals to provide home grown solutions that will reduce the import of collaterals and technical support to execute some of the major events at the international level that the destination has consistently maintained.

I would not call them challenges but rather opportunities for growth. Exposure and funding tailored to sports entrepreneurs is still a work in progress with a lot of exciting initiatives on the horizon.

In what ways have you been able to leverage your exposure and experience to enhance the sports tourism industry?

I am a lawyer by training with experience spanning over 10 years in different industries that is tourism and hospitality, events, public health and now sports. This and learning from captains of industry and trail blazers has given me the exposure, knowledge, experience and network to see opportunities where problems arise and the calculative mindset to bring solution providers together to address challenges.

03 02 04

Can you share a success story or project that you believe has had a significant impact on sports tourism development?

The IRONMAN 70.3 Rwanda, a swim, bike and run triathlon event that our organisation is the licence holder and organiser of, has contributed to the elevation of the destination’s host profile. It was voted the overall best race out of close to 200 70.3 races around the world under the IRONMAN Global franchise.

Sports

07 What role do you believe innovation plays in shaping the sports tourism landscape, and how do you incorporate it into your programs?

Innovation is the backbone of progress. Sometimes it can be a simpler way to approach a problem or provide more complex insights into problem solving. Innovation is at the heart of Rwanda’s development and hubs like Norrsken Africa to mention but a few are testament of that.

My focus on innovation is it being relevant, creative, sustainable, scalable and bankable.

Since joining the team, a success I am personally proud of is the internship program that has exposed refugees, persons with disability, youth and women to work opportunities in sports including the Giants of Africa Festival that too place in Rwanda in August 2024 with headliners like Davido, Tiwa Savage, Tyla and Diamond Platinumz.

How do you envision the future of sports tourism evolving in Rwanda, considering your efforts in human capital development and entrepreneurship?

08

How do you measure the overall impact and success of the programs you design for sports tourism development in Rwanda?

A myriad of programs contribute to the growth of those who benefit from these programs at different levels. We are not a monolith rather another invested and active enabler in the system contributing to the growth and development of sports tourism in Rwanda.

I invite you to Visit Rwanda and come see for yourself how you too can contribute to strengthening the value chain in sports tourism.

Rwanda is on the fast track to becoming a sports hub on the continent serving both East Africa and Central and West Africa. It has attracted the brightest minds with its enabling environment and good policies that will in the near future foster the birth of African brands providing African sports focused solutions that are scalable across the continent. A strong value chain of sports businesses that cuts across borders is what I envision.

05 06

What strategies do you employ to connect the dots between different stakeholders within the sports ecosystem for mutual benefit?

Economic environments and societal norms vary, so my first approach is to understand the various contexts and how they feed into how the society receives innovation. I consult with players in the space, attend a lot of knowledge events where I get to network and learn, read up on literature and the most important of all! I share my knowledge through thought pieces to connect with like minds that validate, refine and inform the dots I connect.

Station Hill Cricket Club : An Interview with Andy Jones

Can you tell us about the history and significance of Station Hill Cricket Club within the local community?

Growing up in Stationhill there was no cricket club or facilities. As a result Me, Andy Jones and two friends, namely Nathan Hilpert and Wayne Gaseba decided to start up a Cricket Club, with the assitance and guidance of community leader, the late Mr Jacobs, we recruited our peers, community members and local youngsters to join and play the game we love and that is how SHCC was established in 2005.

Since then the SHCC has many youngsters from the community playing and practicing cricket and keeping them off the streets and away from the detrimental socio-economic factors, drug and alcohol abuse to name but a few.

Despite the lack of infrastructure, equipment and other social, financial and logistical hurdles, SHCC has grown from strength to strength with some memorable achievements over the years. For example the 1st non-white/ previously disadvantaged club Winning the local Pineapple Tournament in 2017 & 2024. Winning the Eastern Province Grahamstown Cricket Board(GCB) in 2018.

How does Station Hill Cricket Club contribute to promoting sports tourism in the region?

SHCC contributes to promoting sports tourism by taking part in the local tournaments and leagues as a result social media plays a massive part in spreading the info and lures tourist to our local accommodation spots and restaurants and visiting clubs to joining our local tournaments.

For example, we have a young exciting all-rounder from Zimbabwe, Roy that is part of the club and winning team for a few seasons. Due to Social Media and our recent Pineapple Tournament Win and performances SHCC will be hosting a pre-season friendly to a touring Zimbabwean Cricket Club putting our small town on the map and our accommodation, restaurants, tourism industry will be benefitting.

What impact has TrevPAR World’s sponsorship had on the club and its ability to engage with the community?

The Sponsorship from TrevPAR World has been Godsent and brought so much relief. Besides looking the part with the striking tracksuits and gear. The Sponsorship has given much relief financially and allowing players to focus on playing the game and not worriying about logistical arrangements like transport costs, lunches, match balls, umpire fees.

And winning the Pineapple Tournament 2024 and ending runners up by a very small margin in the a GCB league 2024 has brought so much publicity to the SHCC and had many community members noticing the achievements of the club and supporting the matches. And with special talents like Franklin Jacobs that performs with bat and ball week in and out and remarkable contributions by Sipho Saki and fierely bowling spells by Captain Cody Jones hopefully inspiring some youngsters to play cricket and stay out of trouble.

How do you think local cricket clubs like Station Hill can influence tourism and bring more visitors to the area?

As mentioned previously, we have a potential touring team from Zimbabwe coming to play some preseason matches against us and we have also done a few local tours with in the Eastern Cape and we are anticipating those teams to come to Port Alfred for a return fixture. This will benefit Tourism in Port Alfred and expose our beautiful town to visitors and some even 1st time visitors to our area and hopefully com visit again with their families for weekends away or summer vacations.

What challenges and opportunities do you see for sports tourism in South Africa, particularly through cricket.

As with many other industries, lack of infrastructure and financial constraints are hampering the development and exposure of Cricket in our community.
