A not so lazy
Sunday
in Northern Who says Sundays have to be lazy? In Northern Ireland, there’s no shortage of things to do, places to see and brekkies to eat on any given Sunday morning. Here’s a few places worth rising early for.
Cave Hill With stunning panoramic views across Belfast on a clear day, Cave Hill is the perfect spot to catch a Sunday morning sunrise. You can conquer this mountain from various roads, but just be sure you leave via Belfast Castle so you can explore this beautiful estate and its gorgeous gardens.
Warke's Deli & Portstewart Strand Warke’s Deli in Portstewart is the sort of place that makes you wish there were more Sundays in the week. Best enjoyed after a brisk walk on the beach, simply choose a window seat (yep, they’re all window seats!) for a spectacular sea view – then make your selection

from a menu that’s packed with all your Sunday brunch favourites. Everything’s made on site and as many ingredients as possible are sourced locally. Enjoy!
Peace Bridge and Brunch at Primrose on the Quay When in Derry~Londonderry, start your day sunny side up with a dander across the iconic Peace Bridge on your way to Primrose on the Quay. As late morning sunshine flickers across the River Foyle, their incredible brunch menu is sure to have you beaming too. With freshly cooked local ingredients, all lovingly prepared in this family run bistro, you’ve set the day up right starting here. And don’t worry if the rest of your Sunday isn’t stacked with plans, the pancakes are stacked enough as it is!
St George’s Market Jump-start your Sunday morning with a quick breakfast in Belfast at St George’s Market. The famous
market, situated in a stunningly beautiful Victorian building, is one of Belfast’s oldest and certainly most colourful attractions. Grab a coffee from Drop Hopper Coffee Roasters and a brownie from Check Out My Buns before you sit your buns down and watch the world go by inside this wonderful space. Those looking for something more substantial should take this chance to try a Belfast Breakfast Bap from the Belfast Bap Co.
Golf There’s no better way of seeing off the last week - and seeing in the new one – than with a round of golf on one of the world’s best links or parkland courses. Northern Ireland is not a big place but when it comes to golf, make no mistake, this place is giant! 90 clubs – and champions like Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell – are there to prove it.
Cave Hill Country Park, Belfast
Daft Eddy's Well, it’s not on the menu but the recommended appetiser here is a Sunday drive around the spectacularly beautiful Strangford Lough. If it’s not time for breakfast after that, it’s probably time for lunch. Or dinner. It’s definitely time for a helping of Daft Eddy's daily fresh seafood and a host of other dishes, all using local produce – and right next door to Strangford Lough Yacht Club.
Murlough National Nature Reserve Flanked on both sides by the Mourne Mountains and Dundrum Bay, Murlough National Nature Reserve is in an enviable position where stunning views are concerned. Owned by the National Trust, this nature reserve comprises a complex sand dune system that’s over 6,000 years old, and makes for excellent walking with the family. It is also of international significance to wildlife, with a collection of butterflies.
An Creagán If you find yourself heading up one of the many trails in the beautiful Sperrin Mountains for a Sunday morning hike, why not fuel up at
Portstewart Golf Course, Causeway Coastal Route
St. George’s Market, Belfast
An Creagán near Omagh. Sit and relax outdoors overlooking the pond while your breakfast is prepared using local produce garnished and flavoured with herbs and vegetables from the gardens.
Florence Court For an experience with the family that won’t soon be forgotten, there’s Florence Court in the beautiful surroundings of West Fermanagh, at the foot of Benaughlin Mountain. This 18th-century stately home on a sustainably-run estate offers fascinating features of a bygone era, like a water-powered sawmill and blacksmith’s forge. While the house itself is closed for winter, you can still walk around the gorgeous grounds of this National Trust estate, and learn about the Cole family that have called Florence Court home for over 250 years.
XHale XHale extols the virtues of forest bathing, a form of cleansing meditation known for its numerous health benefits and relaxing qualities. We think you’ll agree, holidays are a perfect opportunity to feel the stress melt away and to wrap yourself in calm natural surroundings.
Beaghmore Stone Circles Make your Sunday an intriguing one with a visit to the wonderful Beaghmore Stone Circles. These timeless beauties will pull you back to an era when people marked time by the sun, stars and planets. With a local storyteller as your guide, hear ancient tales connected with the stones and see the stars as our ancestors would have done 6,000 years ago.
Oxford Island Nature Reserve Explore the stunning beauty of Oxford Island, a designated national nature reserve sitting pretty on the peninsula in the southern shores of Lough Neagh. You’ll be spoiled for choice with miles of walking paths, birdwatching hides, ponds, meadows and play areas. See if you can spot mute swans, mallards or grey herons. Or watch out for sparrowhawks and buzzards soaring over the treetops.
Titanic Quarter Follow the Maritime Mile and explore Belfast’s seafaring and industrial history. You’ll spot the Great Light, weighing a whopping 10 tonnes. It once produced one of the brightest beams ever to shine.
Don't plan for "someday", why not make it next Sunday! Sundays were made for those lax strolls around the Christmas markets, treating yourself to a mulled cup of warm cider, or uncovering hidden gems wherever the day takes you.
