DISCOVER WHAT DEFINES US. The First Nations people have lived on these lands for thousands of years, and since Saskatoon’s formation just over a century ago, the city has welcomed newcomers from around the world, all eager to start a new life in this land of opportunity. The result is a place rich in multicultural attractions, festivals, celebrations, shops, and restaurants.

History Within Reach To get a good sense of our history, start by going back to the gathering place of the indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains. Their story is told at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, which lets you explore at your leisure the indoor and outdoor exhibits recalling the time of the buffalo and the nomadic huntergatherers who followed them. But just don’t see it – live it. Learn how their culture evolved as they lived their lives on the land. Your heart will pound to the beat of the drummers and your spirit will be lifted by the dancing. Learn traditional beading techniques to create your own ornamental jewelry, or camp overnight in a genuine tipi. Ask an interpreter to teach you some basic words in Cree. On a medicine walk amid the trembling aspens, listen carefully and you might hear, in a quiet, brief moment, the whispers of ancestors who also camped here long ago. u 8 | EXPLOREYXE

Site - a pleasant one hour drive northeast of Saskatoon. After being welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff, what happens next is up to you! Discover secret stories of Batoche on a geocaching challenge – how many will you reveal? Take a family nature hike and follow in the footsteps of the legendary Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont who led the resistance to the Government's policies for the West. The history is as dramatic as the views along the South Saskatchewan River. Look down to the river, where they fired upon Middleton’s troops aboard the Northcote paddle wheeler, during the events of 1885 – or better yet, bring your canoe and paddle through the past. As you explore Batoche, see if you can find the depressions of rifle pits, or the bullet holes in the buildings, and visit young gunner Phillips’ grave. If you choose, hop on the new shuttle and Journey Through Time to chat with interesting characters from the late 1800s. Experience a rifle pit in action, help build a Red River frame, or work in the garden – immerse yourself in Batoche. u

t The story of rapid European settlement of the prairies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is told back in Saskatoon, at the Western Development Museum. Explore the 30 replica buildings (including a one-room school and a funeral home) along Main Street – all completely indoors – to see what life was like in “Boomtown” circa 1910. Car buffs will particularly enjoy the vintage vehicles (you can take a ride on the Bennett Buggy to travel back in time) and everyone will be impressed by the massive tractors and other early farm machinery that transformed this land a century ago. Of course, Main Street is also the place where you’ll get to meet the iconic figures of the period. Perhaps you can chat with the blacksmith about shoeing horses, or ask the lady in the rocking chair about the quilt she’s making. Before you go, be sure to try on your own costume, just in time for your portrait by the town’s photographer at the Boomtown Photo Studio.

Connect With Nature Our natural history is equally as intriguing, and it’s as close as the heart of Saskatoon. Rent a bike and follow the Meewasin River Valley trails, and you will discover how alive the prairies are with pelicans, gulls, geese, and other migratory birds. You might even spot a deer or beaver – but in case you’re wondering, you are not in bear country. Autumn is especially magnificent, where even late at night you’ll hear the honking of the snow geese, then look up to see them by the hundreds in v-formation as they head south under the full harvest moon. A walk or bike along the Meewasin trails will also take you to the year-round Saskatoon Farmers’ Market, where you can sample local produce and crafts, adjacent to the historic and very happening Riversdale neighbourhood. This is a great way to chat with the local farmers who are always happy to explain how they grow those delectable tomatoes, cure their special meats, and keep the peace with their industrious bees.

LIVE LIFE FOR TODAY! Whether you’re on a cross-Canada trip of a lifetime, or a muchdeserved vacation from a hectic work schedule, it’s time to reward yourself! As one of Canada’s youngest and fastest growing cities, Saskatoon has developed a unique urban vibe with impressive quality and choice. You’ll want to try it all!

Be Seen

Ask any of the locals, “What’s on right now?” In summer, it could be the Saskatoon Pride Festival; a week-long celebration of LGBT culture in Saskatoon. In winter, it might be Winterruption, a weekend jam-packed with concerts taking place around the city. Not to be outdone, the fall season brings the sprawling eclectic (and electric!) Nuit Blanche art festival in the central business district that will have you carrying on well past the witching hour. Speaking of carrying on, a night on the town can take you to cool music venues like Village Guitar and Amp or Amigos. The Broadway Theatre has become an iconic community gathering place featuring performers and events from across Canada as well as local favourites. You can also go high style to the Saskatoon Symphony or take in a Broadway musical at TCU Place. Take a crowd selfie at SaskTel Centre where the biggest names perform. On the other hand, you just might want to kick back by sipping a classic martini at Flint Bistro Saloon or a creative cocktail at Ayden Kitchen and Bar. u

t It’s clear Saskatonians love their festivals, and everyone

rightfully raves about the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. There are so many high-energy, spirited events to explore, such as the PotashCorp Fringe Theatre and Street Festival on Broadway. Join the crowd and hop from venue to venue for cutting-edge theatre or indie music, and sample the flavours of various food trucks along the way.

Sample. Share. Compare.

The good life would not be complete without hand-crafted creations made by passionate foodies and spirit makers. For starters, sampling is always fun. While hanging out on Broadway, try some different olive oils at Oliv. Book a tour of LB Distillers, complete with complimentary samplings of their hand-crafted liqueurs and spirits. Or stop in at 9 Mile Legacy in Riversdale and try some local brew... with crafty names such as Scruffbag Brown Ale or Prairie Rattler. Need a recharge? In the 1800s, there were those who dreamed of navigating the South Saskatchewan with paddle wheelers, just like they did on the Mississippi. One made a great attempt (S.S. You’ll find the Prairie Lily in all her splendor on Spadina Crescent, just north of the University Bridge. The friendly, knowledgeable crew and captain will entertain you with their narrative about the river and its tales while you enjoy an afternoon aperitif, an evening dinner, or perhaps a Sunday brunch. u

Shopping Saskatoon

As the largest city in the province, Saskatoon is a major commercial and retail hub. Our indoor suburban malls – Confederation, Lawson Heights, The Centre and Market Mall – carry many of the well-known national and international brands. The province’s largest indoor mall, Midtown Plaza, features the big names in fashion for downtown shoppers, as does the Scotia Centre just across the street. For unique gifts and locally-made items, spend some time dropping into the many friendly shops and boutiques. If you’re looking for factory outlets and the big box stores, you’ll find them in areas such as Stonebridge and Preston Crossing, via our freeway which circles the city.

Experience The Energy

One of our most popular summer events is our Canada Day Celebrations, with ceremonies and musical performances well into the evening. In the early fall, you’ll have a perfect seat anywhere on the bridges, Rotary Park or River Landing to enjoy the PotashCorp Fireworks Festival. We light up the winter, too, with one of the best light displays in Canada at the BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest from November through January; you can take in all the sights in the warm and cozy comfort of your car. Regardless of the season, our sports scene gives you plenty of choices. Watch the future stars of the NHL at a Saskatoon Blades junior hockey game at SaskTel Centre. Our national junior football champions, the Hilltops, play at the newly renovated Gordie Howe Bowl. Not only football and hockey, but also top-class amateur basketball, volleyball and other competitions are played at the University of Saskatchewan campus, the home of the Huskies. Be sure to catch the energy and excitement of our new professional lacrosse team – The Saskatchewan Rush – in their inaugural season. The schedule starts in January and runs through to the end of April. Ù
