Welcome to Guelph and Area Guelph – pronounced “gwelf”. Known as the Royal City, Guelph was named for the British King George IV, whose family was part of the Guelph lineage from Germany. Have fun browsing through these pages as you find your favourite things to do. But first, here are three pieces of advice when visiting the area: Put your feet up as often as possible. When you come to visit, we want you to feel comfortable and relaxed, just like at home. Introduce yourself to shopkeepers, restauranteurs and the people you are staying with. Whether you’ve travelled from Tokyo or Toronto, we want to hear your story!
4
Learn at least one new thing about the area before you leave. Not only will you feel smarter but you will have more to talk about when you get back home.

TIME well spent. It is at the centre of why we travel, time with friends and family, time doing business or just some time alone. COMING SOON! Guelph will welcome the Guelph Civic Museum in its new location on “Catholic Hill”, which is quickly becoming Guelph’s most popular tourist attraction. In 2004, the building which had housed the Loretto Convent was threatened with demolition. The City of Guelph agreed to lease the building from the Diocese of Hamilton and completely renovate the 30,000 sqft facility to house the Civic Museum, which was bursting at the seams and in need of additional storage and programming space. The new museum features the Royal City Families Gallery – an interactive set of displays for younger audiences located in a dramatic 2 level space. The Growing Guelph and Destination Guelph galleries showcase what is distinctive about Guelph and 6

Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival brings compelling, visually stunning contemporary dance works from across Canada and beyond to Guelph, a festival offering that is rare outside of major Canadian metropolitan areas. Prepare yourself to be swept away by dance that is engaging, magnetic and that stirs the soul.
Hillside Festival Hillside is a volunteer-powered non-commercial community festival that offers two music events, one in mid-winter--Hillside Inside--and one at the height of summer on a lush island in a lake. Guelph Jazz Festival and Colloquium presents five days of innovative world-class music in one of Ontario’s loveliest cities. Eden Mills Writer’s Festival New and established writers of all genres come to readers of all ages in the lush green village of Eden Mills. Bring a blanket, lie on the grass, and take in stories by both award-winning and soon-to-be discovered authors of literary and popular fiction. Festival of Moving Media One of the world’s oldest documentary film festivals, the Festival of Moving Media screens outstanding documentaries addressing local and international issues. The Festival features diverse artists and activists whose film work may not necessarily be considered in the mainstream.

The Eden Mills Writer’s Festival has looked to ancient literature to frame their relationship with local food and beverage partner, Wellington Brewery. Beer is mentioned in the oldest known work of literature, The Epic of Gilgamesh, which was written in the 3rd millennium B.C. In this epic, we learn how beer transformed man from a savage into a cultured man. The Eden Mills Writers Festival is proud to serve Wellington Brewery’s transformative brews during our event.

FOMM has always concerned itself with the sociopolitical aspects of food production as seen in our films, farm screenings and panel discussions. Planet Bean is a local company that is guided by the “moral economy”. Through fair trade, Planet Bean links producers and consumers in a meaningful way. Add to this the great cafe atmosphere and best tasting organic coffee, and FOMM is over the moon for Planet Bean.
