Guelph – One Nine Oh Explore, reminisce and celebrate in 2017 Guelph has a unique history to share. It was selected as the headquarters of British development firm The Canada Company in 1825 by its first superintendent John Galt, a popular Scottish novelist who designed the town to attract settlers to it and the surrounding countryside. Galt designed the town to resemble a European city centre, complete with squares, broad main streets and narrow side streets, resulting in a variety of block sizes and shapes which are still in place today. Guelph is also home to several National Historic Sites including the magnificent neo-gothic Cathedral, The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, and the McCrae House, the former home of Colonel John McCrae, author of In Flanders Fields. Guelph has diverse experiences waiting to be discovered: from award winning festivals, one-of-a-kind events, incredible public art, bustling weekly farmers’ market, and a vibrant, friendly downtown scene. Join us! Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation and the 190th anniversary of Guelph’s founding at events throughout 2017, such as Founders' Day, Aboriginal Day, and a rocking Canada Day party. With The Felling of a Tree, Guelph is Founded St. George’s Day, April 23, 1827, John Galt founded Guelph.
Galt, superintendent of the Canada Company, had instructed that a large tract of land in the Gore district be surveyed for a suitable location for a new town. The site for Guelph was chosen on the bend of the Speed River. With rich river lands, fruitful hills, and water in abundance, it was ideal for pastoral farming. That morning, Galt, along with Canada Company manager Charles Prior, Canada Company warden of the woods and forests Dr. William “Tiger” Dunlop, and two woodsmen set out from Shade’s Mill, Galt to find the bend in the river to mark their site. Soon they found themselves lost in the bush under the direction of Dunlop. After walking for many hours, the group came across the hut of a settler, Samuel Rife, who led the group to the location they were looking for. It was here a large maple tree was selected to mark the spot where Guelph would be settled. Galt wielded the axe and made the first cut. Dunlop made the next swing
6
visitguelphwellington.ca
and the third swing was made by Prior. After the symbolic swings, the woodsmen took over and set about felling the tree. “The tree fell with a crash of accumulating thunder, as if ancient Nature were alarmed at the entrance of social man into her innocent solitudes with his sorrows, his follies, and his crimes,” wrote Galt. “I do not suppose that the sublimity of the occasion was unfelt by the others, for I noticed that after the tree fell, there was a funereal pause, as when the coffin is lowered into the grave.” The somber tone didn’t last long. It was reported that Dunlop, “pulled out a flask of whiskey from his bosom and drank prosperity to the City of Guelph.” “The name was chosen in compliment to the Royal family, both because I thought it auspicious in itself, and because I could not recollect that it had even been before used in all the king’s dominions,” said Galt.

Guelph Farmers’ Market,
The Original Gathering Place: 1827 – 2017
The Beginning: 1827 John Galt was always deemed a visionary. He is said to have had a vision to make Guelph the centre of Ontario’s agriculture industry. Part of that plan was to erect Guelph’s first Market House in the downtown area. It is said that he envisioned locals, farmers’ and surrounding communities coming together to exchange their locally grown products. Between 1827 and 1829 the first Market house, an open wooded structure, was built.
Farmers’ Market Grows: 1857 After years of pleas from the townspeople for a new market it finally happened. The new building was erected and was also the location of the Town Hall. In 1874, the building expanded again. A new second floor was built that housed a Concert Hall.
The Heart of the Market: 1889 Guelph had played host to the travelling Ontario Provincial Fat Stock Show throughout the 1800s. In 1889, these shows would be renamed the Ontario Provincial Winter Fair when Guelph was chosen as the permanent location. Note: The Ontario Provincial Winter Fair was also known as the Guelph Winter Fair. photos: (this page): The Beginning (Wellington County Museum), Farmers' Market Grows (Wellington County Museum), The Heart of the Market (Guelph Museums 1976_40_37) (next page): Farmers' Market Grows (Guelph Museums 1970_55_6), The Market and the War (Guelph Museums 1979_75_44), Current day Farmers' Market (Guelph Tourism)

Farmers’ Market Grows Again: 1900s The Ontario Provincial Winter Fair was proving to be a huge success for Guelph and over the course of the years expansions were made to the market building. This included the addition on Wilson Street that housed the cattle and poultry as well as a Show Horse Barn. The construction also included underground tunnels that connected to the Winter Fairgrounds.
The Move: 1968 In 1968, the Farmers’ Market moves into the Show Horse barn building. The market continues to operate out of the barn building and provides a unique experience to the patrons who come to the market every Saturday. The Market continues to have vendors whose families have been at the market for over 50 years.
The Market and the War: 1939 The Ontario Provincial Winter Fair was suspended because of World War II. The military occupied the fair buildings and used the space to house soldiers that were in training for the war. Unfortunately, the Fair did not continue on after the war.
