Downtown Victoria As the days grow longer and the caressing warmth of the sun reaches down to embrace us, minds grow nostalgic for idyllic summer days of yore – but instead of dwelling on past glories, create new ones in vibrant downtown Victoria! The city is at its busiest and most vital during the summer months, and this year there’s even more to do. Whatever your tastes, you’ll find something to keep you busy within the pages of this guide. See great live musical acts at the Ska Festival, Victoria Electronic Music Festival, Bayview Symphony Splash, Jazzfest, and Vancouver Island Blues Bash. Watch innovative theatrical performances at the Victoria Fringe Festival. For those of a nautical persuasion, there’s always something happening in the Inner Harbour this year, including the Tall Ships Festival at the end of June. Or just wander downtown and check out the excitement, the unique shops, and the brilliant scenery of one of the most beautiful cities in North America. Build up some warm summer memories to keep you cosy during the winter’s chill this year.

Bringing the Community Together to Celebrate Chinese Canadian Achievements August 8 - Empress Hotel The Victoria Chinese Commerce Association and the 150 Years in Golden Mountain Celebration Committee will host a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of Chinese in Canada on the 150-year mark in 2008. August 9 - Royal Theatre 150 Years in Golden Mountain, a Celebration Pageant will be premiered live on stage, featuring local actors and performers in a colourful theatrical interpretation of Chinese Canadian history. In the summer of 1858, a few Chinese merchants and gold miners from San Francisco came to Victoria on Vancouver Island in response to the lure of gold. The rest is history…or is it? Why are we celebrating? As a Chinese business association in Victoria, the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association feels it is our privilege and “duty” to celebrate and honour our ancestors and those Chinese Canadians who have achieved so much on the 150-year mark of service to Canada. How can you participate? Join us – at the events by reserving early, as seating is limited and both events are expected to sell out quickly. Also everyone can participate online with our web programs and web contests. Join us on August 8 & 9 as we celebrate 150 years in Golden Mountain! Heritage Hidden Dragon Tours 541 1/2 Fisgard Evenings 6:30 May to October Old Chinatown was not only vital to the growth of Victoria but also BC and Canada. The original community supplied hungry gold rush, opium, housing and labour markets. Documents suggest that the Chinese navy discovered our coast in 1421. Although Chinatown Victoria sprouted 150 years ago, the Chinese story of Fusang describes the visit of a Buddhist Monk and other accompanying Priests in the year 499AD. Today many diverse cultures, some with 5000 years of unbroken traditions, continue to interact and flourish here. DISCOVER Chinatown where tea tasting and worship in the temple of Tam Kung continue as they have for 150 years. EXPLORE the famous Chinatown alley called Fan Tan where gambling games bearing the same name and a Hidden history once played out. ABSORB the ETHOS of Old Chinatown where the mysteries behind ancient symbols are revealed along with other great finds. Responsible Chinatown tourism, lantern walks and dinner tours are the best way to get immersed in our Chinatown world. 3 hr programs start each evening at 6:30pm for $69. Lantern walks start from $20. Reservations accepted for these Chinatown adventures and more authentic multicultural exchanges by calling 888 HIDDEN 9. Tickets or Admission: $69 Email: hiddendragon@oldchinatown.com For information phone: 888 Hidden 9 (888 443 3369) or visit www.oldchinatown.com
Inner Harbour First Nations Interpretive Walkway Signs of Lekwungen Seven locations around and near the Inner Harbour The First Nations people here are the Lekwungen. Today, the descendents of the Lekwungen consist of two groups: the Esquimalt and the Songhees Nations. All of these groups belong to the broader language group called Coast Salish. Coast Salish artist, Butch Dick, has been commissioned to carve seven original carvings which will be placed at sites around and near the Inner Harbour. Site Marker Locations … Sites where signs of Lekwungen art and interpretive markers will be installed include Songhees Point, foot of Broughton Street, City Hall, Lower Causeway, Beacon Hill Park, Royal BC Museum and Laurel Point. Each marker will identify the original place name and reference the significance of the site to the culture of the Lekwungen people. Project Partners … This project was created by the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations, the City of Victoria, the Provincial Capital Commission and the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority with support from the Government of Canada, Department of Canadian Heritage, Cultural Capitals of Canada. Watch for details on the blessing and unveiling ceremony to be held in September following the installation of the markers. For more information phone: (250) 361-0600
