Flowers - no wedding is complete without them. From rose petals scattered by a flower girl to the beautiful bridal bouquet, flowers are the understated hero of weddings. Can you imagine a wedding without them? Significantly, your wedding flowers may be a large part of your wedding budget, so it is important to find wedding centrepieces and wedding bouquets that you love. Picture yourself walking through a glorious garden with every flower at its peak. Which flowers would you pick for your wedding? The commonplace? The colourful? The rarest? Most fragrant? Unscented? Having trouble deciding from the thousands of varieties available? To help you narrow down your bouquet and centrepiece choices before you meet with your florist, we offer this overview of the most popular wedding flowers. Rose Long considered a symbol of beauty and love, the rose figures into many myths and fairy tales. Romantic writers and poets have used the flower as a metaphor for emotion, beauty, passion, and true love throughout the ages. An all-star in the world of weddings, the rose is far from boring, particularly when it comes to colour - the rose is available in solid colours and bicolour varieties and there are striped roses and tipped roses as well. More than three thousand varieties of roses are grown commercially, many available year-round, which are surprisingly affordable. Though roses are associated with luxurious fragrance, not every rose is scented. Three main types are likely candidates for your wedding flowers: hybrid tea roses (the classic, uniformly-shaped commercial roses generally seen at your local florist), spray roses (a rose with five to ten small heads on each stem and a "natural, garden-grown" look) and garden roses (expensive, old-fashioned varieties with bushy, open heads and delicious scents). Hydrangeas This flower has a big bushy head and intense shades of pink, blue, burgundy and purple. It is considered to keep hold of a variety of colours as it grows from bubble-gum pink to sky blue, depending on the acid level of the soil. A stem or two of this moderately priced, scentless shrub flower helps fill out arrangements and bouquets and a few sprigs make a charming boutonniere. Gardenia Surrounded by dark green, waxy leaves, the exquisite gardenia exudes a sultry, heavy scent. Gardenias are lovely tucked into a bouquet or floating in a low bowl as a centrepiece and a single gardenia makes a wonderful scented corsage or hair accessory. But be gentle: the delicate, creamy ivory petals of this expensive flower can bruise easily. Lily of the Valley With bell-shape florets dangling from a thin stem, the lily of the valley is sometimes called "the ladder to heaven". The fresh, perfumed scent from its tiny flowers is unmistakable. By being regarded as an expensive choice, while a fistful of lily of the valley might be your dream, a more af-

fordable alternative may be to use just a few stems to infuse a bouquet or a centrepiece with its wonderful fragrance. Most people know of the white variety, but lily of the valley also comes in a very rare rosy-pink. Orchid The go-to flower for nuptials in tropical settings, the orchid is more than just a destination wedding staple. You can see why orchids symbolically represent charm and beauty. These delicate flowers are available in several varieties, in shades of green, white and purple. Mostly used in weddings using a traditional or modern theme, orchids can be gorgeous in full arrangements or minimalist-style single stems. Anemone When it comes to modern weddings, perhaps no flower makes more of a statement than the anemone. These flowers feature a dark centre and softly coloured petals. The most popular for weddings are white and blush anemones. Their unique shape almost seems like something out of an illustration, giving them a whimsical, but striking, quality. When paired with other flowers, they are particularly fetching with rounder, softer blooms, like peonies and ranunculus. Carnation Carnations are one of those flowers that you either love or hate. They are very affordable and come in a staggering amount of colours. Because of their sturdy nature, these flowers are often used to create floral decor elements like flower balls. Carnations have a ruffled texture, which provides an amazing touch to vintage wedding centrepieces alongside roses. In fact, if you love a monochromatic look, but cannot afford a centrepiece entirely composed of roses, stretching your budget by substituting in a few carnations, is a smart option.

next to the excursion forest parks and is regarded as a pole of attraction for young people who are looking forward to get married at an incredible place of interest. The chapel, with its Aegean colours and pathway of steps that guides you to it, is built on the top of a cave whose opening is only a few metres above the waters of the region of Ammochostos. However, throughout the years, this shelter has been converted to a small church that has become ideal for weddings that are specifically attached with the essence of true love. Profitis Elias Church On the hill in Protaras is a charming stone-built church named as Profitis Elias, which it is said to retain 156 steps set into the rock to reach its entrance. Limassol, a town on the southern coast of Cyprus, was established as a municipality in 1878 and is regarded as the largest municipality on the island, keeping hold of a population that reaches up to 150.000 inhabitants. Limassol is considered to be a popular tourist destination, since it blends the magic of the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea with the infrastructure of wonderfully luxurious hotels that are looking forward to satisfy every demand. Significantly, Limassol contains a long historic and cultural tradition with a variety of archaeological sites and museums presenting evidence of the existence of previous settlements that date back to 4000 years ago. In the old times, the town of Limassol used to be a natural harbour with potable spring water that was encircled with extensive agricultural plantations, mainly from grape vines and carob trees. In Limassol, the season of the Carnival is considered to be a popular festival that is filled with elements of entertainment and leisure that pass through the pathways of dance and amusement. The Limassol Carnival has become a tradition to the town since the 1940s and has still retained its glory, attracting thousands of people every year, both locals and visitors. Furthermore, the Wine Festival is another major event that is organised annually by the Municipality of Limassol, an affair that promotes Limassol as the centre of the wine industry in Cyprus. The Municipal Garden Theatre, located in the Limassol Municipal Gardens, is a creation that flourishes in concerts and performances, mainly during the summertime, a significant example being the Ballet Festival that takes place every year. In the Municipal Gardens, the Limassol Zoological Garden has been completely renovated in 2012, being transformed to an entirely modern reconstruction with the use of materials such as glass, wood and rope, avoiding the cold structures of concrete and steel, thus creating an environment similar to the animals’ nature through the sensations of love and care. However, the Municipal Gardens of Limassol do not only provide the visitor with a relaxing walk in an emerald green natural scenery through the aspects of serenity, but are also the ideal location for weddings with a fairytale character, touching upon the essence of happiness. The Limassol Molos Promenade, the multifunctional park of the town, has been recently renovated and converted to a construction of exceptional beauty with astonishing piers, where one could gaze upon the waters of the crystal Mediterranean Sea and inhale the sea’s life, hence, capturing a sensation of liberty through the aspects of a dreamful seafront landscape. The piers at the park have been designed specifically for weddings of a breathtaking charm, for couples who have been craving for a space between the sea foams and the sky, the earth and heaven, exchanging their vows under the romance of a mythical moonlight. A new, small open air theatre is also included in the amenities of the park, where its viewers have the opportunity to enjoy performances by the sea in a green and blue atmospheric exposure. Moreover, the Molos Promenade is ideal not only for relaxing walks by the waterfront that lead to the sandy beaches of the area, where one could enjoy a refreshing swim or drink at the various cafes, but is also considered to be a park of entertainment and leisure as it consists of a modern sculpture garden and a skateboard park. An exclusively luxurious destination for living, yachting, dining and shopping is the Limassol Marina, a part of the town’s old port, which has been constructed to shape the ideology of living on the sea and has regenerated the outlook of town’s aspects, thus being considered as a development that has deeply incorporated the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, touching upon the core of a marine lifestyle. At night, the Limassol Marina is surrounded by the exhibit of amazingly colourful lighting through the aromas of peacefulness, delight and pleasure. Furthermore, the new linear Garillis Park was a project that was under construction for the past two years and has finally reached its termination. This park is a route that is divided in parts through the town’s neighbourhoods. Its starting point commences from the highway and its ending reaches up to the Limassol Marina, providing a walking direction that TOURIST PRESS - Wedding Edition - Page 6

leads to the old town’s new breath through a natural green environment. Yet, at some stage of the hiking trail the pedestrians will have the chance to enjoy the relaxing sounds of frogs from a nearby river. Significantly, the Limassol Castle located near the Limassol Marina holds a turbulent history and is one of the nine castles of Cyprus being counted along with the ones of the occupied areas on the island. The first report of the castle’s existence goes back to 1228, when it was used as a prison although containing the structure of an ancient Byzantine Castle. As stated, the castle was constructed in 1193 by Guy de Lusignan, a French knight. Nevertheless, during the Turkish Occupation, the Ottomans rebuilt the castle on its ruins in the 19th century. During the British rule the Limassol Castle was used as a district archaeological museum until 1963 and later on, underwent renovation and maintenance work to open as the Mediaeval Museum of Cyprus, which occurred in 1987 and is still housed within the castle’s spaces. At the castle, it is said that Richard the Lionheart married his fiancée Princess Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her Queen of England, hence providing the site with a story of deep love. The castle’s courtyard is currently a destination for exceptional weddings, a place where its historic characteristics have the ability to touch upon the features of passion and affection. Yet, the Municipality of Limassol is even promoting the existence of weddings not only in a historic atmosphere, but a marriage of old times releasing the ceremony through the elements of the past and bringing its phenomenon to the surface of today’s epoch. The Municipality of Limassol offers to couples wishing to solemnise a civil wedding a variety of options through the spirit of a one of a kind sensation, a few examples being the sea as a background, the combination of romance and quality through the aspects of originality and much more for your special day. Weddings are conducted in a large number of spaces, where they are filled with components of delight and elegance. The wedding venue of the Municipality, housed at the City Hall offers the simplicity and magnificence, which transforms the most important day of your life into an exceptional one, leaving the best impressions to be experienced and remembered by you and your guests. The venue can accommodate up to fifty people, whilst the freedom of choice in regards to decor and accessories offers the opportunity to adapt the atmosphere to your personal taste. Weddings take place and at the Olympian Coast that is considered to be an amazingly exquisite coastal front with a unique path of colours, patterns and images for the creation of moments that last forever. Civil weddings occur and in other spaces of exclusive charm such as, in the gardens of the Municipal Art Gallery, the Municipal Library and the Pattichion Archive Museum, at the Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre and the Fytidio Sports Centre (GSO), all producing a diverse but exceptional environment for a perfectly magical wedding. After all, this day belongs solely to you and should be prepared through the nature of uniqueness.

Undoubtedly, customs and traditions around each event are more or less common in every part of Cyprus. Every town and every village also adds some of its own components, which compose and reflect the cultural development and identity that is worth being studied. Once in Cyprus, weddings formed a large and significant part of life, where many people took part in. Weddings used to be held only on Sundays and the festivities used to last for a whole week, ending with the Cypriot tradition of the “antigamos” on the first Sunday after the wedding. Today, only the villages of Cyprus maintain the traditional romantic beauty of marriage, but not as they did in the bygone era, since the whole process surrounding the marriage has waned in our time. Most couples now choose to enjoy this special moment of their life with close friends and relatives, therefore as a result, former weddings with thousands of guests have been substantially reduced. It is fairly difficult to imagine what used to happen during the days of a wedding. Similarly, it is hard to estimate the size of the celebration which was developing through the event, the feelings of the newlyweds, but also of their relatives, as well as the atmosphere that prevailed after a sevenday feast with food, music and a lot of dancing. What is certain is that it is truly exciting, interesting and even magical as we discover the magnitude

that the Cypriot wedding once kept hold of. Below are some traditions of a Cypriot wedding of earlier times, which have been adapted to present trends. You can even try them and if nothing else, they will undoubtedly make you laugh with exhilaration! The decoration of the bride Formerly, the decoration of the bride used to be performed with live traditional music, mainly with a violin or lute, in the presence of the family, relatives and the bride’s girlfriends who dressed her and did her make-up and hair. The people at this event used to provide the musicians with tips for their musical pieces, who formed a pleasant atmosphere by creating a small celebration at the home of the bride, just before the big happening. Nowadays, this proceeding could be… a rejuvenating day at a spa centre! If you are a couple about to get married, simply enter the spa a day before your wedding and get out, if possible just before... the actual wedding ceremony. You will definitely relax through the touches of serenity and feel your body filled with shine and beauty. The specialised treatments, massages and amazing products will generate miracles and amazing wonders! As far as music is concerned… at the spa you will enjoy exceptional melodies filled with peaceful sounds of nature and the smooth sound of the blue sea. Don’t forget to provide the staff of the spa with tips for the wonderful treatments that they have accomplished! The Dowry The dowry was once necessary for women to get married. Specifically, so that the father-in-law would not trick the groom and stick only to promises, a contract of wealth was invented in the presence of a priest and other notables of the village, which was called the “fortune contract” or in Greek the “prikosimfono”. Some of these contracts would even talk about chickens, goats, donkeys, saucepans, bed sheets, mattresses, lands and other household items that were used back then. As money was hard to find due to the poverty caused by the First and Second World War, the groom’s family would demand from the family of the bride, a number of material things that were needed and used during that epoch. If this actually happened in our times, the groom would surely be considered to be… a fortune hunter! It is likely that he will lose the woman of his dreams forever, since she most probably would not talk to him ever again. Some programming though in advance is not as bad, just to see, where you stand financially. Therefore, take a piece of paper and pen sit opposite each other and make a list of what each of you have separately acquired and what you would like to obtain together. You will discover a wealth increase as everything is multiplied by two! Of course this is the case if no debts are involved. Add in your life the gifts and money from the wedding envelopes of the guests and commence to dream of... your honeymoon before the arrival of a baby or even a brand new car!

Cyprus, an island rich in ancient history, myths and legends and known as the island of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and beauty, promises love and happiness to all who visit it. Apart from being a wonderful place for their holidays for a large number of these visitors, Cyprus represents the ideal place for a very special and personal occasion like that of their wedding. In accordance with the provisions of the relative Law, the Municipality of Yermasoyia and the other Municipalities of Cyprus, have the right to officiate a civil wedding. The procedure for acquiring the marriage licence is simple, as long as the interested parties have all the relevant information and necessary documents. The marriage ceremony is officiated by the Mayor or a person authorised by the Civil Council from the Municipality of Yermasoyia. The service is held at the Cultural Centre of the Municipality. The Cultural Centre of Yermasoyia is an old, traditional house which has been renovated to its traditional style, but in a way that it can accommodate its new functions, one of them being civil weddings. The marriage hall is also in the old traditional style along with its furniture and the walls are decorated with samples of traditional laces. The beautiful gardens of the Cultural Centre, the century-old church of Saint Paraskevi and the traditional narrow paths provide an ideal setting for the taking of photographs. After the ceremony, the Mayor and the members of the Civic Council offer their best wishes and a gift to the newlyweds. The municipality of Yermasoyia is situated in the east of Limassol and almost joined up to it. The area of Yermasoyia is approximately 17 square kilometres with a beach stretching for 3.5 kilometres of which a large part of it has been transformed into the tourist industry of the region. Yermasoyia consists of 38 hotel units of every category with a large number of beds. Today, it is one of the most important tourist destinations in Cyprus. It is considered to be an especially beautiful area for both locals and visitors since in such a small area you are offered with everything you can imagine; Mountains, plains and the sea, along with a modern cosmopolitan environment and pure tradition, all this justifying those who call Yermasoyia the two-sided coin of the island.

TOURIST PRESS - Wedding Edition - Page 12

Visitors that come to Yermasoyia’s beach resort with its modern five-star hotels are often taken by surprise to find out that the area is not just a beach, but a complete heaven of both mountain and sea. Particularly, the area also extends into a valley, where the old village of Yermasoyia lies. The name of the village Yera-mesoyia, meaning Holy Inland Area, derives from its location and cultural background. The name of Yermasoyia came from the combination of the words Yera, meaning Holy and Mesogia, meaning Mediterranean, which by being united as one they achieved the name ‘Yermasoyia’. For the word Holy there are two versions. The first version states that it took the name Holy since in the area there are many churches. The second version supports that the area perhaps had a church which was regarded as very significant and that the large number of churches might not be the actual reason. The name Mediterranean indicated that the original settlement was located some distance from the sea. Nevertheless, the two areas of Yermasoyia today are divided by the Limassol’s motorway. In a different, warm and welcoming way the Municipality of Yermasoyia invites visitors to stay in the area and to get to know more about Yermasoyia by joining its walking tours. With this invitation, two special tours, the first being Yermasoyia, a village blessed by water and the second discover the natural environment of Yermasoyia are organised every week between November and March and are offered free of charge in a combined walking and coach tour. The visitors who are associated with the walks will get a better feel for the place and a clearer understanding on the historic and cultural development of the area. Yermasoyia has been developed between two important ancient City Kingdoms, Kourion and Amathus, founded by the Greek Mycenaean settlers in the 12th century BC. Despite the fact that so far no evidence has been found supporting that this area was inhabited in the Neolithic period (5th Millenium BC) like the rest of the Limassol area, it seems that its important geographical position in the valley of Amathus has always been a significant element in the area’s development throughout the ages. The Amathos River has obviously been significant in the valley’s development. What is important to mention is that on the riverbed of the Amathos River in the area of Potamos Yermasoyias, a medieval bridge is built and is regarded as one of today’s few surviving Frankish monuments. Furthermore, excavations in Yermasoyia have brought to light many ancient tombs, which date back to the Archaic times (8th - 6th century BC). It seems that the first actual settlement of Yermasoyia was situated at the area of Paliomonastiro, dating back to the early Christian times. Since then, there has been uninterrupted cultural activity in the area until the modern times.

All these factors are combined to offer to couples of all ages a dreamful honeymoon and a one of a kind vacation through the sensation of delight and true love. By being the home of Aphrodite, a special character and attractiveness is added to the island, where the aura of her presence intensifies special moments of deep affection. It is worth mentioning that Petra tou Romiou, the place where Aphrodite was born, was voted by Lonely Planet as being one of the top ten most romantic spots in the world. According to legend, this strikingly beautiful spot is where Aphrodite rose from the waves and the foaming sea and was then escorted on a shell at the rocks known as ‘Rock of Aphrodite’ or ‘Petra tou Romiou’ in Greek. The Greek name, Petra tou Romiou, “the Rock of the Greek”, is also associated with the legendary Byzantine hero, Digenis Akritas, who kept the marauding Saracens at bay with his amazing strength. It is said that he heaved a huge rock into the sea, destroying the enemy’s ships. Moreover, in certain weather conditions it is also said that the waves rise, break and form a column of water that dissolves into a pillar of foam. With imagination, this looks for just a moment like an ephemeral, evanescent human shape.

In addition, visit the grotto, where Aphrodite took her beauty baths on the beautiful Akamas peninsula and met her lover, the handsome Adonis, when he stopped off for a drink while hunting in the forest of Akamas. The so-called ‘Baths of Aphrodite’ lies at the end of a small nature trail named as the Aphrodite Cultural Route and is an area that is shaded by an old fig tree, producing an exceptional charm to the place’s attraction. This beauty spot is situated past the fishing harbour of Latsi, between Polis and Cape Arnaouti towards the tip of the Akamas peninsula, a wild uninhabited region with a breathtaking beauty of inland and coastal scenery, being designated as a National Park. In Akamas, the uniqueness of the flora stems mainly from the unparalleled endemic wealth. There are about 530 indigenous plants, of which 35 are endemic, out of a total of about 142 endemic species, sub-species and varieties occurring throughout Cyprus. Some of these plants are endemic to the area. Alyssum akamasicum and Centaurea akamantis have taken their name from the area itself, while species such as Centaurea veneris, Tulipa cypria, Gladiolus triphyllus and many others are found either exclusively or chiefly in the Akamas peninsula. As regards fauna, the endemic Glaucopsyche paphos butterfly can be considered the emblem of the area. Until recently the Mediterranean seal, Monachus monachus, bred in the inaccessible caves of the peninsula, while on the remote beaches of Lara, the sea turtles, Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, continue to breed in large numbers. An area of extraordinary panorama sparkled by Aphrodite’s intense pulchritude. Furthermore, you may also pretend you are a worshipper of Aphrodite’s cult as you wander among the ancient ruins of the archaeological sites dedicated to her worship. Palaepafos, meaning Old Paphos, located in the village of Kouklia, was one of the most celebrated pilgrimage CONTINUE ON PAGE 16

centres of the ancient Greek world and a former city kingdom of Cyprus. Here stood the famous sanctuary of Aphrodite, the most ancient remains of which date back to the 12th century BC. The glorious days of the sanctuary lasted until the 3rd to the 4th centuries. The museum, housed in the Lusignan Manor, exhibits many interesting finds from the area. Excavations continue on the site of the sanctuary, the city and the necropolis. The Palaepafos Aphrodite Cultural Route not only includes the main archaeological site of Palaepafos, but also the Chalcolithic site of Lempa and a number of museums, nature sites and trails with visits being possible to commence from any site.

TOURIST PRESS - Wedding Edition - Page 16

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite at the Acropolis of Amathus, is believed to be second only to that of Palaepafos, of which, according to the myth, it was an offshoot establishment. The Greek-style temple and the remains immediately below it, date back to the late Ptolemaic and Imperial times. Evidence of the presence of a sanctuary in the area before then includes votive offerings going back to the mid-8th century BC. Through the centuries, the Sanctuary of Aphrodite was a traditional Cypriot sanctuary with a sacred enclosed space for ceremonies and votive offerings around an altar. There may have been other buildings in the area, but the cult itself was not housed in a main building. Two gigantic stone craters (huge monolith vessels), which were believed to be of the late Archaic period also stood in the area. One was taken to the Louvre in the middle of the 19th century and has now been replaced by a modern replica. It is possible that these remained the focus of the sacred space for a long period. According to tradition, there were two other temples at the Acropolis of Amathus apart from the temple of Aphrodite; one dedicated to Adonis and the other to Hercules. Their remains, however, have not yet been located. The Limassol District Archaeological Museum consists of in-depth information on Goddess Aphrodite, such as exhibits of objects related to her based on fertility and female terracotta figurines. In Cyprus, your wish is a command! Allow professionals on the island to take care of everything for you, from the formalities of registering for the marriage license, through to choosing bouquets, cakes, photographers and of course your after ceremony celebrations, that will create a lifetime of memories in one day. All you need to do is relax and enjoy the romance of your day. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands (904 square km). It is famous for its dramatic mountain range (the third largest in Greece) and its unique breed of wild “Ainos” ponies, named after the highest point on the island. This island also boasts underwater caves such as those at Melissani and Drogarati, quaint fishing villages and hundreds of different species of wildflower. From beaches to wineries to traditional chapels with breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, there are many beautiful locations to choose from. It is also possible to arrange Catholic or Orthodox weddings. What is definite is that your wedding in Kefalonia will be truly be an unforgettable moment. The wedding service in the Greek Orthodox religion is an ancient and beautiful ceremony. It has been celebrated in its current form for centuries. Full of symbolism, the ceremony is a great experience if you have never attended one before and is likely to be quite different from other weddings you have attended. In the Greek Orthodox ceremony, the bride and groom do not make vows to each other: instead, their vows are made to God. The Catholic wedding service is held in Saint Nicolas church, the only Catholic church in Kefalonia, located in the centre of the capital city, Argostoli. A Catholic wedding service where the bride and groom are both Catholics is usually Nuptial Mass, where they will both receive Communion. In the case of marriage between a Catholic and a non-Catholic, the service could be performed outside of Mass, in a wedding ceremony without Communion. Be prepared to be swept off your feet over the loveliness you are about to witness. Kefalonia is considered to be of an exceptional natural beauty. Mountains, lakes, eco-parks, caves, streams and geological phenomenons are only some of the beauties that Kefalonia nature has to offer. A few amazing sites are Katavothres in Argostoli, Drogarati Cave and Melissani Cave and Lake in Sami. Aside from being a lovely, waterfront location, Katavothres is the site of a rare geological phenomenon, which had trumped scientists for generations. Here, seawater pours through fissures in the rocks near the coast and disappears underground. Noticing the regularity in the water’s movement patterns, water mills were placed here by an Englishman (Stevens) in the early 1800’s to take advantage of this occurrence. While many attempts were made since that time to explain this peculiarity, many theories were advanced, but none were verifiable. Finally, the puzzle was solved in the 1960’s by a group of Austrian scientists, who added a colouring agent to the water in order track its course. The water that had been dyed at one of the sink holes at Katavothres, emerged 14 days later at the seaside village of Karavomilos, near Sami. Following the trail using radioisotopes, the group was able to chart the full course of the water’s journey, which includes passage through underground limestone crevices and a stop at the Melissani Cave before flowing on to its final destination. The Dorogati Cave has been discovered almost 300 years ago thanks to an earthquake, which shook the region and created a possible entrance, Drogarati has only been open to the public since 1963. Inside, the cave walls are lined with stalactite and stalagmite formations and speleologists TOURIST PRESS - Wedding Edition - Page 24

have estimated the cave to be 150 million years old. Drogarati is roughly 60 metres deep with humidity reaching a level of 90%. Interestingly, Drogarati is comprised of two parts, only one of which is accessible to the general public. The portion that opens to visitors includes the “Royal Balcony”, a natural “balcony” of light reflecting stalactites and the “Chamber of Exaltation”. The latter is a large, hall-like space, sometimes used to host cultural events for up to 500 and named for its impressive acoustics. The Melissani Cave, also referred to as Cave of the Nymphs as it used to be a place of worship dedicated to God Pan, also comprises the Melissani Lake, setting the stage for a mesmerising experience. Curiously, the lake is a mixture of seawater and freshwater though it is about 500 metres from the sea. Most impressive however, is the unique effect created by the rays of sunlight that pierce through an oval opening in the cave’s ceiling, lending an exquisite blue colour to the waters below. In order to capture the full effect of this show of lights, it is best to visit at midday, when the sun is directly above the cave. The island of Kefalonia is considered to be one of the world’s best destinations with an everlasting natural beauty, where the dream of an astonishing wedding can thrive. In Cyprus, the treats that are traditionally offered at weddings are the so-called “loukoumia” and “kourampiedes”. The loukoumia are round shaped and manufactured from semolina. Their filling is either of almond or pistachio nuts and are sprinkled with white powdered sugar. On the other hand, the kourampiedes are either round or square in shape, baked with almonds and externally, whitened with powder from grounded sugar. Recently, more modern treats have been added with either a delicious chocolate or caramel flavour, such as brownies, biscottini made from biscuits and creamy chocolate and even plain almond treats filled with chocolate. Of course, there are many other tasty and delicious treats that can be offered to the guests as a thank you gift for attending the wedding. Each treat is enclosed in a wrapping or decorated box, according to the colours that dominate at the wedding. Usually, the colours that are used are white, gold, silver or pink. The wedding treat can become even more impressive, if a small card is placed on top of it with the wedding date and the names of the newlyweds. A lot of people along with the treat offer a gift of remembrance, the bombonniere, in order to provide the guests with a uniquely memorable gift of their wedding. Likewise, you can also offer an incredible bombonniere of remembrance to your guests so that they can place it in their home or office and hence, be provided with a beautiful memory of a wondrous ceremony. These gifts could be both silver and hand-made, like small bowls engraved with Cypriot images such as grapes, boats or even the Cyprus Moufflon and the Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. The bombonniere in particular should include traditional white and pink almond candies wrapped in tulle and tied with a ribbon. On the ribbon, a thank you card could also be added that includes the names of the couple. If you have too many guests though and the cost of the silver bombonniere is relatively high, you could also choose ceramic or silver-plated ones instead. In Cyprus, you will find outstanding and very amusing wedding favours, whose large choice selection of shapes and quality will certainly not disappoint you. If you want to remember your wonderful experience on the island of Aphrodite, you do not have to do much, but to choose the bombonniere that will remind you of Cyprus. Olive: You can find this bombonniere in ceramic or silver-plated in a number of distinct shapes. This wedding favour is symbolic, since the olive tree is considered from ancient times as very precious and beloved in the Cypriot tradition. According to the ancient Greek myths, the olive was a gift from the Goddess of wisdom, Athena, to the people, who to thank her they named a Greek city after her called Athens. The olive is a symbol of peace, protection and fertility. In Cyprus, there are many olive trees and this specific choice of wedding favour is surely one of the most desirable and cherished gifts of remembrance. Ship: In either silver-plated or the ceramic edition with open sails that are embellished with small pearls, this bombonniere forms a majestic choice for the perfect wedding. Cyprus, an island surrounded by the Mediterranean, from long ago consisted of an advanced shipping industry. Likewise, the ship symbolises the voyage that you and your beloved one will commence together, a common path that fits only two. Grape: For this wedding favour, apart from the silver-plated and ceramic versions, a type made from cherry pearls that form the shape of a bunch of grapes also exists. The grape was loved from ancient periods and to its tribute the God of wine, Dionysus, was born, who taught to people the art of wine manufacture. Additionally, the grape is also included in many Roman mosaics. In Christianity, red wine symbolises the blood of Jesus Christ. Grapes also symbolise blessing, abundance, romance and joy, since drinking wine that is produced from such a smooth fruit, a strong welfare is adopted. Pomegranate: In a silver-plated or the ceramic edition, commonly on the one side of the design of the wedding favour a part of the interior of the fruit is illustrated, mostly to add an extra beauty. There is also, however, a closed version of this bombonniere. The pomegranate is regarded as the symbol of good luck, long life and abundance, due to the many CONTINUE ON PAGE 30

seeds that it retains. Dieticians describe it as the bank of antioxidants that can terminate the formation of a number of serious illnesses. The Egyptians discovered its properties many thousands of years ago and placed pomegranates in the tombs of the pharaohs. In Cyprus, there are many pomegranate trees and many farmers even support that this fruit helps to reduce the problem of stress. Apart from the wedding favours described above, there are also many other shapes that are equally as beautiful and impressive, an example being a photograph of the couple, a flower, a swan and many more other shapes of an exceptional touch. Furthermore, if you prefer to incorporate a religious tradition to your gift, you could offer small icons of

Depending on the number of guests, your cake should be accompanied by free standing pieces ready to be served. Therefore, the main cake remains decorated on your table, throughout your wedding ceremony. What is definite is that the wedding cake is formed by the taste and choice of the newlyweds, custom designed to their own wishes. Since you are in Cyprus grasp the opportunity and take the challenge to combine your wedding cake with seasonal fruits, dried nuts or even traditional sweets, such as pieces of soutzouko, one of the most favourite sweets on the island produced from grape juice.
