HOLIDAY PARTIES

Enhance your corporate or social holiday party with a touch of magic by pairing it with NIGHT LIGHTS for a truly festive experience!

From Summer Blooms to Autumn’s Tranquility

THE SHIFT INTO AUTUMN BRINGS BEAUTY AND, USUALLY, TRANQUILITY, but this fall follows a growing season that blossomed into one for the books. Thanks to supporters like you, we broke records. April of 2024 was the busiest month in our Garden’s history. Experiencing the joy so many visitors found in our spring blooms and spring-themed educational programs geared us up for a summer like no other.

In June, we had the privilege of convening our peers in public horticulture. The American Public Gardens Association conference came to Boston, and New England Botanic Garden served as one of its hosts. At a special conference event, over 500 professionals from botanic gardens across the country visited our Garden for an evening of learning and connecting. We couldn’t be prouder of all we were able to show off

Also in July, we launched an exciting new partnership, a formal affiliation

with the U.S. branch of Botanic Gardens Conservation International and the Ecological Landscape Alliance. The partnership brings the leadership base of these two nationally and internationally operating environmental organizations to the Garden and strengthens us all in plant conservation, research, and ecological horticulture practice.

Throughout the summer, exciting new special events, educational programs, and immersive art exhibitions, like Flora in Flight, Aerial Art by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics, drew in thousands to engage with art in conversation with nature. The addition of our brand new event space, the Reservoir Room, complete with an outdoor terrace and breathtaking views of the Wachusett Reservoir, creates opportunities for even more people to celebrate life’s major milestones at the Garden.

Our mission is to create experiences with plants that inspire people and improve the world. It’s never been a more exciting time to do this work because, as you’ll find in the following pages, we’re connecting visitors with this mission in so many meaningful and diverse ways.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our Garden community. We look forward to seeing you this fall!

Return of the Chestnut Tree

The Garden’s Endeavor to Restore a Valued Species

GARDEN VISITORS WHO HAVE BEEN EXPLORING OUR NEW TRAILS FROM THE INNER PARK TO THE SUMMIT may notice something out of the ordinary – a number of bright pink flags seemingly scattered around the forest floor. Far from being random, the flags allow our stewardship team to track down some really special plants growing beneath the ground’s surface.

New England Botanic Garden recently became part of an American chestnut tree conservation effort that is different from many others. Led by the American Chestnut Cooperators’ Foundation (ACCF), a Virginiabased nonprofit, the effort aims to restore the iconic American chestnut tree (Castanea dentata) to its native range in eastern hardwood forests with trees that are naturally blight resistant and 100% pure American chestnuts.

That such trees even exist may come as a surprise to those familiar with the story of the American chestnut. In the early twentieth century, chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), a pathogenic fungus introduced through the nursery trade, destroyed more than 3.5 billion American chestnut trees from Georgia to Maine. The ecological, cultural, and economic fallout from the loss of this valuable species is hard to overstate. While the blight was catastrophic and continues to persist across the landscape snuffing out non-resistant

chestnuts that make new attempts at growth, some trees did survive the original outbreak. ACCF discovered a surviving population in Virgina in the 1970s, and since then developed a traditional backcross breeding program that successfully reinforced blight resistance in new generations of American chestnuts. These trees are now ready to be tested in natural forest settings.

The Garden is currently serving as ACCF’s largest site for reforestation, with 160 ACCF seeds and 20 seedlings planted in a section of forest north of the Garden’s core property. This area offers perfect American chestnut habitat — sloping, rocky hillsides and a mature, mixed oak forest complete with an understory of witch hazel and mountain laurel. A heavy presence of blighted American chestnuts offers further proof of their historic presence in the area.

The planting includes American chestnut trees representing eight distinct genomes. The slightly different genetic makeup of the trees means different genomes may have better tolerance for environmental conditions, things such as seasonal temperatures, precipitation, and pests. The Garden will regularly collect data on how the trees perform and share this with ACCF to support the organization’s continued research and the ongoing evolution of their breeding program. How well the Garden’s trees do over time, in response to blight and other environmental factors, has the potential to inform future reforestation efforts across the Northeast. It‘s a thrilling prospect that, thanks to ACCF, has already been decades in the making. We look forward to sharing more about this important work in the months and years to come.

The horticulture team planted 160 chestnut seeds in one of the Garden’s woodland areas this past spring.
