T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) Today we welcome Billingham Synthonia who are a very good side, both technically and tactically and a team full of experience, so we will have to be at our best. Our run of form is good, the group of players are working hard for each other and we are developing a style of play that is effective. There is still a lot of hard work ahead but we are going in the right direction, the players are working hard in training and transferring that into the game. We hopefully will have Scott Oldfield available. but will still have Matty Moffat , Thomas McLoon, Lewis Milner, Jeff Smith, Jay White and Jake Thompson unavailable. This list of experienced players is quite extensive and we look forward to the day they all return and the squad will have good strength in depth.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Tow Law Town 1-0 Willington AFC Saturday 10th October 2020 This was the lawyers second local derby in seven days, it was nothing like the 4-3 win against Crook Town on Tuesday night but this 1-0 win was just as important. The Lawyers started the game just like they ended the last one taking the game to the opposition from the off. First couple of minutes saw the ball rebound of the crossbar from a dangerous cross. Michael Brown upfront was testing the Willington defence time after time with his blistering pace. A good run from Adam Knowles beating three defenders but unfortunately shooting straight at the keeper. It was one-way traffic from the Lawyers and their persistence paid off in the 10th min when Michael Brown was scythed down in the box. The referee didn’t hesitate and gave a penalty. After scoring two great penalties on Tuesday night you would’ve put your money on Barrie Smith converting this one. Unfortunately for Barrie the Willington goalkeeper guessed the right way and made a great save. This did not seem to affect the Lawyers who just kept plugging away knowing another chance would come. That chance came after 24 mins when the Lawyers completed a 12 pass move that was finished off in style by Michael Brown. This was the pattern for the remainder of the first half Michael cutting through the Willington defence but could not beat the keeper. In all honesty Michael should’ve had a hat-trick in the first half. Willington came out second-half and made a game of it, but it was still the Lawyers that looked like they would extend their lead. Lew Graham in the Lawyers goal was hardly troubled as Tow Law dominated in all areas. They did have chances to extend their lead throughout the second half, but were stopped by a very good Willo keeper. A header which seemed to cross the line wasn’t given and a lunging late tackle in the box on the impressive Michael Brown were the highlights late on. The referee waved both appeals away, yes the ball over the line was a tough call. But the late tackle in the box, we think he got that one wrong as VAR proved. So it finished one nil to the Lawyers, not a bad weeks work 2 derby wins and 6 points, we’ll take that. My Man of the Match was Michael Brown on this form he’s unbeatable.

Ryton & Crawcrook 2-3 Tow Law Town Saturday 24th October 2020 This turned out to be sweet revenge for the Lawyers. Last month they were beaten 3-1 at home to Ryton in a game the Lawyers dominated. So to come to Kingsley Park and take all 3 points proved very satisfying. It was Ryton who took an early lead when a mix up at the back presented the forward with a clear chance giving Lew no chance in the Lawyers goal. Tow Law responded well by creating chances of their own, and on 32 mins another defensive mix up but this time in the Ryton half presented Mason Hurworth with a great chance. He didn’t disappoint by beating the keeper to make it 1-1. The Lawyers tails were up now and on 39 mins Brownie broke clear to round the keeper and from a tight angle put Tow Law 2-1 up. This game always had an edge to it from the off, which kept the officials very busy, yellow cards aplenty in the opening 45 mins. Second half was much the same blood and thunder tackles, if anything I would say Ryton shaded the first 15 minutes. The Lawyers then got a foot hold in the game, new signings Daz Richardson in midfield and Oscar Eckley in defence settling into their new surroundings. The Lawyers were rewarded a penalty on 75 mins after another break away attack, and that man Baz Smith stepped up on to slot home to put Tow Law 3-1 up. Give Ryton credit they did make things interesting, with 5 mins left they got a great headed goal. But the Lawyers weren’t to be denied and played time out to claim all 3 points. This win keeps the Lawyers within touching distance at the top, unbeaten in 6 matches and more important full of confidence. Man of the Match for me was Adam Knowles (Adzy) for his non-stop commitment and enthusiasm to the game.

Billingham Synthonia FC History Billingham Synthonia FC formed in 1923, first contesting the South Bank & District League, before joining the Teesside League. After the second world war, Synthonia rejoined the Teesside league for a last term before joining the Northern League in 1945-46. The clubs first ground was on the south side of Belasis Lane, part of ICI’s original sporting complex. they moved across the road to a new Belasis Lane ground in 1945. A notable first in football occurred on this ground in 1952, when Synthonia took on an RAF team in the first floodlit game in northern England and the first amateur team to play under lights. They left the Belasis Lane ground in 1958, moving to Central Avenue with a 2,000 capacity cantilever stand (the longest in the country at the time). The first game against Bishop Auckland ended 2-2 with an attendance of 4,200, the club’s highest. Synthonia left their Central Avenue ground at the end of the 2016-17 season and currently play at the Norton Sports Complex. Synthonia played their first Northern League match on the 25th August 1945 with a 5-4 win away at Shildon. After coming third in their inaugural Northern League season & ‘Dusty’ Rhodes scoring a club record eight goals in a match at South Bank on Christmas Day 1945, Synners went on to become runner-up on three occasions; 49-50, 50-51, 51-52. in 50-51 Billingham didn’t concede a home league goal all season, keeper Harry Armstrong preserving the record in a 3-0 win over Bishop Auckland in the last game of the season. the record stands to this day. A first trophy as Northern Leaguers came in 51-52, winning the Northern League Challenge Cup. A first league title came in 56-57. Billingham also boasted FA Cup runs which saw them face football league sides in the 1st round proper on four occasions before the 60’s; Crewe Alexandra in 48-49, Stockport County in 49-50, Scunthorpe in 51-52 and Carlisle United in 56-57, as well as Boston United 57-58. Synthonia continued to make an impact in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th qualifying round three times, 66-67, 72-73 and 78-79. Although being Durham FA affiliated, they competed in the North Riding Senior Cup; winners in 66-67, 71-72 and 78-79 as well runners-up in 69-70, 70-71 and 72-73. This period also saw the introduction of the holders of the club’s two main records; Tony Hetherington is the club’s top goal-scorer with 243 goals including a club record 51 goals in 71-72. Andy Harbron, made his debut in 1977 and is the club’s top appearance maker with 648, scoring 76 goals. After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 81-82, the club enjoyed a 22

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”

purple patch with a host of league and cup success, despite being relegated to division 2 in 85-86. Promoted back to division 1 at the first attempt in 86-87, the 2nd division title was claimed losing just one league game. The following 87-88 season saw League Cup success over Shildon with a 2-1 win. FA Cup success also returned to the club as they reached the 1st round for a 6th time and a ‘home’ tie against Halifax Town at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Ground. the Shaymen ran out 4-2 winners. The 88-89 season saw the 1st division title claimed for a second time. A first Durham Challenge Cup success was also obtained with a 4-1 win over neighbours Billingham Town. A third Northern League title was secured in 89-90 and a third League Cup was also claimed in a 5-2 win over Whitby Town. Further FA Cup progression also ensued with a 1st round tie away at Lincoln City where Synners narrowly missed out with a 1-0 defeat at Sincil Bank. More success in the Durham Challenge Cup followed in 90-91 with a 1-0 win over Eppleton CW. Synthonia were runner-up in the league in 92-93. The following 93-94 season Synners reached the quarter-final of the FA Trophy, a run which included wins over conference sides Kettering Town & Macclesfield Town. Billingham exited after taking Woking to a replay. Another Northern League runner-up came in 94-95. The 95-96 season saw the fourth of Synthonia’s Northern League titles. Two further runner-up spots in the league (96-97 & 97-98) came as the century came to a close. The early part of the new millennium saw Billingham runners-up twice in the Durham Cup (02-03 & 05-06), runners-up in the League Cup (02-03) and a runners-up spot in the Northern League (04-05). The club’s best FA Vase run came in the 2006-07 season, reaching the semi-finals only to lose out 5-4 on penalties against AFC Totton. the away leg saw Synners gain a 2-1 advantage;, the return leg Totton won 2-1, before a crowd of over 2,300 at Central Avenue. Synners won the Durham Cup in 08-09 with a 1-0 win over Northern Premier League side Durham City, the following 09-10 season retaining the trophy in a 2-0 win over Ryton. Synners record win of 11-0 was recorded on November 8th, 2014 in a Durham Cup 1st round game at Seaton Carew. Synthonia were also relegated in the 2014/15 season. Synthonia were promoted back to division one in 2016-17 and were also runner up in the Durham Cup for a 5th time, losing 2-0 to South Shields in the final at Hartlepool’s Victoria Park. The 2017-18 season saw the club struggle in division 1 both on and off the pitch with a young squad and facing uncertainty over the club’s future and were relegated back to division 2 as well as devastatingly leaving the Central Avenue Stadium.
