The Brief
HOW TO DO CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR for short, is a simple life-saving technique given to someone in cardiac arrest. It aims to take over the job of the heart and lungs by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body.
CHECK FOR DANGER
Look around for risks to make sure you won’t be putting yourself in danger by helping.
CHECK FOR RESPONSE
Gently shake the person by the shoulders and ask if they can hear you.
SHOUT FOR HELP
If you don’t get a response and the person is not breathing or not breathing normally (do not put your face next to theirs when checking), they are in cardi ac arrest and you should shout for someone to help you.
CALL 999
Call 999 and make sure an ambulance is on its way. You will be talked through what to do and given the location of a defibrillator if there is one nearby.
COVER MOUTH AND NOSE WITH CLOTH
If you think there is a risk of infection, place a cloth, towel or piece of clothing loosely over the patient’s mouth and nose.
START HANDS-ONLY CPR
Put your two hands together and interlock your fingers, place your hands in the centre of the chest and push hard and fast to the beat of Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark. Keep going until professional help arrives or the person starts to regain consciousness.
USE A DEFIBRILLATOR
Please see our ‘How to use a defibrillator’ poster.

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk)
We have experienced some highs and lows so far this season. We welcome Carlisle City for what should be a good game, we have had some close games over recent seasons and today’s game will no doubt be the same.
They have started the season very strong and deserve their current position in the league, however we are on a good run of form ourselves so go into this game with confidence.
We have almost have a fully fit squad which gives good competition for places so the players are challenged each week.
It was nice to get a week just training midweek instead of playing, the season start has been tough with a lot of travelling so it was nice for the players just to travel to the Ironworks Ground for training .
The squad have trained hard this week and are fully prepared for the tough challenge ahead.
We look forward to seeing you at the game. Vasey & Warren Pearson
Lawyers Club History
The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892.
The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since.
Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points.
Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board.
Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.)
They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Carlisle City History
The Club was formed in 1975 by two ex Carlisle United footballers, George Walker and Ron ‘ginger’ Thompson. In 1976 a reserve side was formed, followed by a third senior team in 1977. The Club maintained 3 teams for about 13 years then in 1990 set up a junior section.
An under 18 team was the first junior team formed and by 2000 we had grown significantly to 2 senior teams, 10 boys teams and 4 girls teams.
Today we support 5 senior sides, in addition to the Senior side our Development side are in the Cumberland County League, our two Veterans sides compete in the Cumberland County Veterans League and Carlisle City Deaf FC compete in the EDFL and Cumberland FA Ability Counts Leagues. Our junior section comprises of 10 teams, all in all we have nearly 300 players at our Club. The 2009/10 season saw a City ladies team compete in the Cumbria Womens league for the first time.
The senior side joined the Northern Alliance league in 1975 and played continuously at that level until 2016/17 and the promotion to the Hallmark Security League. In the Alliance, City were often the bridesmaids and never the bride, as they finished league runners-up on no fewer than nine occasions. Incredibly, City finished second on four occasions in our first five seasons in the Alliance. In more recent times, the side were also runners-up in successive seasons in 2013/14 and 2014/15. We made our debut in the NWCFL in the 2016/17 season finishing in a respectable mid-table position in the league as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Cumberland Senior County Cup. In our last season in the NWCFL we finished in a very respectable 6th position having led the First Division North for several weeks early in the season following an impressive run of 12 wins in the first 13 games. We also reached the Semi-Final of the NWCFL First Divison Cup.
We have enjoyed plenty of cup success over the years, winning the Alliance League cup four times, and the Challenge Cup on six occasions. The last season in the Alliance also saw a trophy collected as City beat Percy Main in the final of the Bill Gardner trophy.
We were laterally moved from the NWCFL First Division to the Ebac Northern League Division 2 for the 2019/20 season, sitting in 7th place place when the season was curtailed due to Covid-19. In the 2020/21 season we were in third place when the season was cancelled. 2021/22 was the clubs most successful season to date with a league and cup double.
Champions of the Ebac Northern League Division 2 in our first full season in the league having come from a long way off top spot due to games in hand and stringing together a fantastic unbeaten run at the end of the season to take the title pipping Heaton Stannington on the final day of the season due to a superior goal difference which included a fantastic 115 goals scored in the 40 league games. City also clinched the Cumberland County Cup for the first time in 18 years beating Workington Reds and Penrith en route to the final where the Sky Blues were comprehensive winners against Wetheriggs. FA Vase round 2 was also an achievement for the club before being knocked out by Abbey Hey.

DAVID SEGGIE (Midfield) Previously played for a while in Scotland with Gretna FC 2008. A tenacious player in midfield who likes a tackle as well as being a very popular member of the squad. David suffered a horrific facial injury this preseason when he collided with pitch-side hoardings at Threave Rovers.
KYLE TOWNSLEY (Goalkeeper) A massive commanding presence in goal. Kyle has previous experience with both Northbank and Gretna FC 2008. He left for a while last season due to work commitments but has returned to the squad for season 2021-22. Son of exprofessional player Derek Townsley.

PETER ALLISON (Full back) Has come right through the ranks at City, playing junior football here too, which culminated in some
Cumberland FA under 18 county caps. A loyal clubman, Peter turns in gritty and committed performances from his full-back position, and is able to slot into central defence when required. A keen golfer in his spare time.
JORDAN IRVING (Striker) Began his senior football career with City, playing mainly in our Development side in the County League, where he suffered a couple of nasty knee injuries, which he has battled back well from. Has also played at Penrith and Pirelli, and had a short spell last season with Gretna FC 2008. A very quick player, capable of playing wide or centrally, and will be a regular scorer at this level.

Previously with Celtic Nation, Penrith & Pirelli, Tyler is a composed and stylish central defender with good pace. He is also capable of “pinging” a fine pass. Brother of professional player Ryan Bowman, now with Shrewsbury Town.

NATHAN JOHNSTONE (Midfield)
An industrious player who has progressed through our Development side.
DAN KIRKUP (Defender) Well known in Northern League circles after serving many clubs across the region. Began his career at Carlisle United and also served Workington Reds and Southport as well as a spell playing abroad. Still capable of scoring goals too.

Began his senior career at just 17 with City in the Northern Alliance before moving to Gretna FC 2008 where he suffered a nasty knee injury. Fighting his way back now after some years out of the game.
TOM NEWTON (Goalkeeper) Been with the club a few seasons now, after playing under 18s football with City then serving clubs such as Kendal Town and Penrith. An excellent club man who supports our keepers even if not playing himself.
KIERON OLSEN (Full back) Joined City after leaving Carlisle United a few years ago. Very strong defender with a great strike on the ball.
MARC SHIEL (Striker) Now at the veteran stage but still retains great
enthusiasm for the game. Was Northern Alliance overall leading scorer in City’s last season at that level, and also served Harraby Catholic Club, Celtic Nation & Gretna FC 2008.
LIAM STUDHOLME (Midfield) Joined City from Gretna FC 2008. A hard-working midfielder with a good natural level of fitness. Scored twice this season at home to Brandon United.
RYAN SWAILES (Midfield) Joined after being released from Carlisle United in the summer of 20/21. A fiery tackling midfielder who will be looking to break into the team soon. Missed most of last season following a serious ankle injury.
