Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & very very warm welcome back to Ironworks Road for 1st Division football in the EBAC Northern League. Today, we extend our welcome to Whickham AFC. Last season finished disappointingly, as we lost out in the play-off final to Heaton Stannington. We thought we’d be in division 2. By a quirk of fate, we benefited from the sad resignation from the league of Ryhope CW FC & found ourselves promoted to Division 1. It may have been a back door route, but like any other Club we are more than happy to accept the FA decision. As a Club, we know its going to be tough, competing with well established teams. Michael & Warren have been really busy bringing together a squad to compete in this division, check the players out in the pen pics section. Off the field, we continue with our hard work behind the scenes. On the terracing, you will see our sponsor advertising boards. We are grateful to these businesses for their support. Please help our sponsors to support us by supporting them. The Clubhouse continues to provide a community focal point, particularly with the regular band nights. We still offer top quality, cheap refreshments. Pop in for a few drinks to support us. On a sad note, recently we lost a man who can be described as a “Legend of Tow Law”. Charlie Donaghy worked tirelessly throughout his life for Tow Law, the local communities & Tow Law Town AFC. Who could ever forget The Bobby Robson nights, organised totally be Charlie. Charlie’s funeral will be held at St. Philllip & St. James Church at 11am on Wednesday 3rd August. It will be a packed house to give him the respect he deserves. Rest in Peace Charlie. HOW TO DO CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR for short, is a simple life-saving technique given to someone in cardiac arrest. It aims to take over the job of the heart and lungs by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
CHECK FOR DANGER
Look around for risks to make sure you won’t be putting yourself in danger by helping.
CHECK FOR RESPONSE
Gently shake the person by the shoulders and ask if they can hear you.
SHOUT FOR HELP
If you don’t get a response and the person is not breathing or not breathing normally (do not put your face next to theirs when checking), they are in cardiac arrest and you should shout for someone to help you.
CALL 999
Call 999 and make sure an ambulance is on its way. You will be talked through what to do and given the location of a defibrillator if there is one nearby.
COVER MOUTH AND NOSE WITH CLOTH
If you think there is a risk of infection, place a cloth, towel or piece of clothing loosely over the patient’s mouth and nose.
START HANDS-ONLY CPR
Put your two hands together and interlock your fingers, place your hands in the centre of the chest and push hard and fast to the beat of Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark. Keep going until professional help arrives or the person starts to regain consciousness.

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) Firstly, we’d like to thank everyone for the unwavering support last year, which carried the squad to the promotion play-off final. We know that we can count of your support this year, back in Division 1, where we believe this Club should rightly be. After the pandemic lock downs, last season was our first full, uninterrupted season at the helm of Tow Law Town. After a somewhat average start, the team kicked into gear mid term & a great run towards the end took us up to 4th place in the final table. This ensured a play-off spot, which we grabbed, reaching the final. Unfortunately, we fell at the final hurdle. As we prepared for another Division 2 season, putting together a squad for another promotion push, suddenly we found ourselves promoted to Division 1. This brought a whole new outlook on the squad we needed. Whilst retaining a large number of last season’s squad, we knew that to compete in Division 1 was a whole new ball game. First through the door came Andei Ardelean & Dom Joynes, both with experience of Division 1 & higher. Slowly, we brought more quality players in. Pre-season has gone well, with good numbers at training. Our pre-season games saw us draw with North Shields (last years champions) & Newton Aycliffe, who finished top 6. Wins over Pickering Town & Consett Reserves completed our schedule. It all starts properly now, Whickham at home, followed by Redcar Athletic on Tuesday. We know there will be no easy games this season. The team is raring to go, there’s competition for the shirt in every single position. Lets get right behind the team & give them all the support we possibly can..

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Whickham AFC History It all began back in 1944 when the club was formed under the name of Axwell Park Colliery Welfare, although they were colloquially termed the Home Guard Team. Early on, the side played in the Derwent Valley League, before switching to the Northern Combination and, in 1974, to the Wearside League. Whickham enjoyed quite a degree of success at this level before joining the Northern League Second Division in 1988.Having reached the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 1978-79 losing to Almondsbury Greenway, it was in 1981 that Whickham had their finest hour. The club going all the way to the Twin Towers in the final of the FA Vase, after a titanic struggle to overcome Windsor Eton in the semi Final. An estimated 5,000 fans followed Whickham to Wembley. Willenhall FC from the Midlands awaited on the big day. In a gripping Final, Whickham came back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 at full time with goals from Alan Scott and Ronnie Williamson taking the game into Extra-time. Ecstasy followed when Billy Cawthra broke way to win it 3-2 to send the Vase back up to Tyneside. This success leaves us as the last North East based club to win a National Final at the old Wembley Stadium which is now re-built, the club’s little piece of History. Whickham again nearly reached Wembley in 1983-84 falling short in the Semi-final in controversial fashion. The second-leg tie at home to Stansted saw two Whickham players sent off in a bad-tempered affair. After just one season in the Second Division under the management of Billy Hodgson the club gained promotion for the first time into the First Division in 1988-89 and spent three seasons there before being relegated in 19991-92. Another promotion came in 19994-95 when they won the Second Division. A further two seasons was spent in the First Division before another relegation in 1996-97 back into the Second Division, where they’ve remained until 2018. After Billy’s reign the club struggled to find its identity and with funds tight struggled to compete and although three or four managers took over, the club found itself in a perilous position 1999-00 when without the intervention of Tony Ainley the club was in grave danger of going out of business. Tony’s reign started with no players and no money and although his first two seasons were really about survival, the club was once again safely settled in the Northern League. Over the next three or four years the club undertook major changes and the hard work was rewarded when after a fantastic run defeating four First Division sides on the way, the club found itself in the final of the Prestigious Durham Challenge Cup 26
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
and after being second best for long spells against a very good Billingham Synthonia side, two late goals from Kenny Boyle and Ian Robson snatched Whickham an amazing victory. The Following season the followed the capture of the DCC by winning the newly named Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup (2nd Division Cup) by defeating Penrith in an exciting Penalty Shoot-out. In our defence of the DCC also in that season, we also reached the Semi Final of the DCC in our defence of that Trophy before losing a close game away at Chester le Street. After Tony decided to relinquish the managerial post the club had a lot of chopping and changing but in 2013 Robin Falcus was appointed manager. The 2012-13 season was a tough learning curve for Robin and Kris Holmes his assistant, but the club decided to stick with a plan. Anyone that knows Robin can see his passion and hunger to get the best of the players and club and the decision to stick has grown to be a great one. Robin began to build, and things took aim. The Lang Jacks finished 6th (the highest in six years) in 2017 after a rollercoaster season and in the following season, things turned to magic. The aim was to Improve on the previous season and that was well and truly smashed. In a tough competitive league where many other clubs had more resources, Robin managed to build a young and hungry side which defied the odds and were a surprise package, finishing third in the league thanks on a dramatic last day of the season. Third was enough for the club to secure promotion into Division One for the first time in 21 years. The club’s past may be chequered and not without success, but Whickham FC has been on this roller-coaster. There’s been plenty difficulties, but the people behind the club have always came together for the love of the beautiful game. In their first season back in Northern League Division One, it was a difficult campaign for the Lang Jacks, who finished second-bottom, but they still remained in the league and have built a strong squad ahead of the 2019-20 season. With the likes of former York City ‘keeper Adam Bartlett, and former South Shields forward Carl Finnigan, on board, along with a whole host of other talented players, everyone at the club is excited to see what will happen.

Whickham AFC Pen Pics Nathan Harker (Goalkeeper): Nathan was the club’s first 2022 summer signing, joining the team from Bedlington Terriers. Nathan is a well-recognised goalkeeper having played for Newcastle United youth teams for several seasons. Harker was in fine form for Bedlington during the 21/22 campaign. The goalkeeper has excellent ability and commands his area well. Chris Bannon (Goalkeeper): Chris is a top goalkeeper with a tone of experience having played for several Northern League teams throughout his career. He initially joined the Lang Jacks in October 2021 from Whitley Bay as the club’s goalkeeping coach but has since registered as a player. Chris was previously part of Newcastle United’s youth set-up before going on to win the FA Vase and Senior Cup with North Shields. Tom Howard (Defender): Tom signed for the club from Sunderland’s academy and has continued to improve each season. The defender is a reliable and consistent weekly performer who is strong in defence and offers an option going forward. Kieran Galbraith (Defender): Kieran joined the club from Division One rivals Bishop Auckland for the 2019 / 2020 season. The central defender has become a 30
leader within the team and an everreliable presence at the back. Kieran is strong in the air, reads the game well to produce vital interventions and is comfortable on the ball. Jamie Dunn (Defender): Jamie joined Whickham in December 2021 from rivals Whitley Bay producing several solid displays. The left-back is versatile across both defence and midfield and offers a threat going forward with his pace and ability to cross making life hard for any defender. Dale Burrell (Defender): Dale is the club’s vice-captain and will be starting his fourth season with the club having signed from Dunston UTS. Dale can also operate in central midfield and is a leader both on and off the field. He’s an experienced player who intelligently reads the game well and has great passing ability. Dom Agnew (Defender): Dom joined the club in November 2021 initially on loan from South Shields and has been a regular in the team since. The young defender was a big part of the club’s solid defence last season. Dom is not scared to put his body on the line, wins his defensive duels and reads the game well. Jack Moody (Defender): Jack is a versatile defender who can operate as either a centre-half or left-back. He joined the Lang Jacks in November 2021 having

had a period away from the game. Moody is a composed defender and strong in the tackle. He also offers support going forward. David Below (Defender): David joined the club in December 2021 from Ryton & Crawcrook Albion. David offers a tone of experience and can play either as a full-back or defensive midfielder. George Priest (Defender): George made the step up from our Under 23’s to the first-team squad throughout the 2021-2022 pre-season and kept his place within the team going into the start of the season. George plays at left-back and enjoys advancing forward. The defender is neat on the ball, capable of taking on his man and offers a threat in attacking areas. Harry Yoxall (Defender): Harry was born in Denver, USA and joined Whickham from Whitley Bay in July 2022. The defender was voted Whitley Bay’s young player of the season for the 2021-2022 campaign. Harry can play anywhere across the back four and enjoys pushing forward. The defender is calm and confident on the ball, always looking to create an opening when in possession. Ross Peareth © (Midfielder): Ross is the captain of Whickham and the longestserving player at the club. The 2022/ 2023 season will see Ross notch more than 400 club appearances. The defensive-minded midfielder leads by example in the middle of the park. Ross is a tough tackler, brilliantly breaks up play and has the knowledge to turn defence into attack within a matter of seconds.
Kaleb Young (Midfielder): Kaleb signed for Whickham in December 2021 and has become a fan favourite through his ability with the ball. The creative box-to-box midfielder can pick a pass and has the skill set to set up counter attacks as well as doing his bit and helping the team defensively. Shay Richardson (Midfielder): Shay joined the club in the summer of 2022 from Northern Alliance club Wallington. Shay is a box-to-box midfielder who is neat on the ball, has an eye for goal and is strong aerially winning many of his duels. The attacking-minded player can take his man on and has a range of skills with pace to burn. Mitchell Ramsay (Forward): Mitchell joined the club in the summer of 2022 from rivals Whitley Bay. the club a wealth of experience. The attacker offers a physical presence up top while also getting stuck in with his defensive duties. Scott’s ability in the air makes it hard for defenders to deal with him. Scott Robson (Forward): Scott signed for the club in August 2019 after a very successful two years with the Park View Academy of Sport, where he won the National Youth League and National Youth Cup with the Carlisle PV team. He has also represented Chester-Le-Street Town. The forward is a hard-working player who will cause opposition defenders real problems. Scott came into his own last season becoming one of the club’s leading goalscorers and helped create a hatful of chances for the team. Jack Robson (Forward): The tricky winger and former Newcastle United academy graduate has seemingly found a home with the Lang Jacks. The skilful winger-come striker has the ability to take players on and find the back of the net. After temporarily moving to the USA, Robson has featured at the higher levels of non-league football playing for Hebburn Town and Morpeth Town before joining Whickham at the beginning of the 20/21 season. Stephen Hall (Forward): Stephen joined the Lang Jacks from Rutherford during the summer of 2022.
