The Lawyer’s Brief Good evening & welcome to Ironworks Road for tonight’s EBAC Northern League fixture with Billingham Synthonia. Both teams are looking to extend their season into the promotion playoffs, so expect a competitive game. On the pitch we’ve had a good week, with wins at Horden, Easington & Esh Winning. Off the pitch, we also work hard behind the scenes. On Saturday night, we host The Force. Why not get to our band night in the clubhouse. Sadly, last week we lost another legend from the past, with the passing of George Brown. George represented England at amateur international level but will be remembered for his contributions to our 60’s FA Cup encounters with Mansfield & Shrewsbury. We will pay our respects to George by holding a minutes silence prior to tonight’s kick off. Rest in peace George. Thank you, Steve Moralee, Club Secretary, Tow Law Town AFC

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) The games come thick and fast and yet another tough challenge against a very good Billingham side. The team has performed well over recent weeks and as we approach the final weeks of the season the strength in depth will be tested as injuries and fatigue kick in. All the lads have prepared for this and are relishing the challenge ahead. Its always nice to finish a season with so much at stake as this is why we play the game . It is quite possible that team changes will be made tonight due to injury and availability which is why we have a strong group of players with equal ability. We hope all enjoy the game and hope to see you again at all our remaining home games.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Tow Law Town 2-2 Boldon CA Tuesday 22nd March 2022 Ebac Northern League Division 2 Out of sorts Lawyers find the Levi too much to handle. Tow Law we’re beaten for the first time this season at the Ironworks tonight and to be honest they were no complaints on or off the field. They started the better team having large amounts of possession but again without that killer instinct in front of goal. The Lawyers thought they had there breakthrough on 10 minutes, when for some unknown reason a stone wall penalty appeal was waved away by the man in black. Only he will know why it wasn’t given because everyone else in the Ironworks called it (away fans as well). On the other side Boldon are in a rich vein of form winning 4 out of the last 5 games and sitting pretty in 4th position. They also have a certain Levi Collins who tonight showed why every 1st Division team want his signature. In the space of 10 minutes he put Boldon 2-0 up, with two sublime finishes. He was the difference at the break as the lawyers found themselves 2-0 down. Second half you expected a response from the lawyers and there was on 55 minutes Tommy McAloon slotted a freekick under the wall into the corner of the Boldon net. Things got even better on 60 minutes when Joel Pearson latched onto a through pass to level things up at 2-2. GAME ON! This rocked Boldon and the lawyers had them on the back foot, but yet again the final ball was letting Tow Law down. Unfortunately the lawyers paid the penalty for all those missed chances on 72 minutes poor defending allowed Boldon to go 2-3 up with a simple tap in at the back post. The last 10 minutes were very even with both teams creating chances but without that killer finish. That changed on 86 minutes when that man Levi Collins seized on a mistake, danced through the lawyers defence before calmly slotting the ball past Graham to claim his hat trick and give Boldon all three points. Just to top a miserable night off lawyers Renshaw saw red (frustration) with seconds remaining. Not the best night at the Ironworks for the lawyers. Man of the Match Both JJ and Baz never stopped all game, but think Barry Smith just shaded it for me.

!

CHECK FOR RESPONSE

Gently shake the person by the shoulders and ask if they can hear you.

SHOUT FOR HELP

If you don’t get a response and the person is not breathing or not breathing normally (do not put your face next to theirs when checking), they are in cardiac arrest and you should shout for someone to help you.

CALL 999

Call 999 and make sure an ambulance is on its way. You will be talked through what to do and given the location of a defibrillator if there is one nearby.

COVER MOUTH AND NOSE WITH CLOTH

If you think there is a risk of infection, place a cloth, towel or piece of clothing loosely over the patient’s mouth and nose.

START HANDS-ONLY CPR

Put your two hands together and interlock your fingers, place your hands in the centre of the chest and push hard and fast to the beat of Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark. Keep going until professional help arrives or the person starts to regain consciousness.

Billingham Synthonia History Billingham Synthonia FC formed in 1923, first contesting the South Bank & District League, before joining the Teesside League. After the second world war, Synthonia rejoined the Teesside league before joining the Northern League in 1945-46. The clubs first ground was on the south side of Belasis Lane, part of ICI’s original sporting complex. they moved across the road to a new Belasis Lane ground in 1945. A notable first in football occurred on this ground in 1952, when Synthonia took on an RAF team in the first floodlit game in northern England and the first amateur team to play under lights. In 1958 Synners moved to Central Avenue with a 2,000 capacity cantilever stand (the longest in the country at the time). The first game against Bishop Auckland ended 2-2 with an attendance of 4,200. Synthonia left Central Avenue at the end of the 2016-17 season and currently play at the Norton Sports Complex. Synthonia played their first Northern League match on the 25th August 1945 with a 5-4 win away at Shildon. After coming third in their inaugural Northern League season & ‘Dusty’ Rhodes scoring a club record eight goals in a match at South Bank on Christmas Day 1945, Synners went on to become runner-up on three occasions; 49-50, 50-51, 51-52. in 50-51 Billingham didn’t concede a home league goal all season, keeper Harry Armstrong preserving the record in a 3-0 win over Bishop Auckland in the last game of the season. the record stands to this day. A first trophy as Northern Leaguers came in 51-52, winning the Northern League Challenge Cup. A first league title came in 56-57. Billingham also boasted FA Cup runs which saw them face football league sides in the 1st round proper on four occasions before the 60’s; Crewe Alexandra in 48-49, Stockport County in 49-50, Scunthorpe in 51-52 and Carlisle United in 56-57, as well as Boston United 57-58. Synthonia continued to make an impact in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th qualifying round three times, 66-67, 72-73 and 78-79. Although being Durham FA affiliated, they competed in the North Riding Senior Cup; winners in 66-67, 71-72 and 78-79 as well runners-up in 69-70, 70-71 and 72-73. This period also saw the introduction of the holders of the club’s two main records; Tony Hetherington is the club’s top goal-scorer with 243 goals including a club record 51 goals in 71-72. Andy Harbron, made his debut in 1977 and is the club’s top appearance maker with 648, scoring 76 goals. After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 81-82, the club enjoyed a purple patch with a host of league and cup success, despite being relegated to division 2 in 85-86. Promoted back to division 1 at the first attempt in 86-87, the 2nd division title was claimed losing just one league game. The following 87-88 season saw League Cup success over Shildon with a 2-1 win. FA Cup success also returned to the club as they reached the 1st round for a 6th time and a ‘home’ tie against Halifax Town at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Ground. the Shaymen ran out 4-2 winners. 26

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”

The 88-89 season saw the 1st division title claimed for a second time. A first Durham Challenge Cup success was also obtained with a 4-1 win over neighbours Billingham Town. A third Northern League title was secured in 89-90 and a third League Cup was also claimed in a 5-2 win over Whitby Town. Further FA Cup progression also ensued with a 1st round tie away at Lincoln City where Synners narrowly missed out with a 1-0 defeat at Sincil Bank. More success in the Durham Challenge Cup followed in 90-91 with a 1-0 win over Eppleton CW. Synthonia were runner-up in the league in 92-93. The following 93-94 season Synners reached the quarter-final of the FA Trophy, a run which included wins over conference sides Kettering Town & Macclesfield Town. Billingham exited after taking Woking to a replay. Another Northern League runner-up came in 94-95. The 95-96 season saw the fourth of Synthonia’s Northern League titles. Two further runner-up spots in the league (96-97 & 97-98) came as the century came to a close. The early part of the new millennium saw Billingham runners-up twice in the Durham Cup (02-03 & 05-06), runners-up in the League Cup (02-03) and a runners-up spot in the Northern League (04-05). The club’s best FA Vase run came in the 2006-07 season, reaching the semi-finals only to lose out 5-4 on penalties against AFC Totton. the away leg saw Synners gain a 2-1 advantage;, the return leg Totton won 2-1, before a crowd of over 2,300 at Central Avenue. Synners won the Durham Cup in 08-09 with a 1-0 win over Northern Premier League side Durham City, the following 09-10 season retaining the trophy in a 2-0 win over Ryton. Synners record win of 11-0 was recorded on November 8th, 2014 in a Durham Cup 1st round game at Seaton Carew. Synthonia were also relegated in the 2014/15 season. Synthonia were promoted back to division one in 2016-17 and were also runner up in the Durham Cup for a 5th time, losing 2-0 to South Shields in the final at Hartlepool’s Victoria Park. The 2017-18 season saw the club struggle in division 1 both on and off the pitch with a young squad and facing uncertainty over the club’s future and were relegated back to division 2 as well as devastatingly leaving the Central Avenue Stadium. The club were on the verge of returning to Division 1 before the corona virus pandemic cut short both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. They still managed another Durham County Cup Final in 2021 though, losing 2-0 to West Auckland Town. The foundations are in place to secure the club’s future with Synthonia now having a football academy, and a development team competing in the 2021-22 season.
