The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & welcome to Ironworks Road for today’s EBAC Northern League fixture with Birtley Town. Whilst we extend a warm welcome to all our visitors, personally I’d like to welcome Colin Beat to Ironworks. Colin recently stepped down as Birtley Secretary. Over a number of seasons we’ve formed a personal rivalry & a good friendship. Enjoy your retirement mate, you deserve it. Off the field the clubhouse continues to thrive. Tonight we host 60s music band FAB. It will be good to see the clubhouse packed & rocking. We’ve got our new floodlights installed. They should have been unveiled on Tuesday night, but Durham City asked for the game to be postponed. Hopefully we can see them in action on Tuesday 28th, again against Durham City. Enjoy the game & support The Club. Try a drink in the Clubhouse & some food at the canteen. Thank you Steve Moralee, Club Secretary

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) After a difficult few weeks of poor results it was good to see the players were in good spirits at training, they worked hard and showed good spirit. There is real good quality within the squad, there’s a good mix of experience and youthful energy, we now need to produce performances and consistency to match the potential. Success in football isn’t guaranteed as a lot of outside factors can influence results as we have found over recent weeks. In our experience you have to stay mentally strong, believe in what you are doing and just work hard both in training and even harder on match days. We all remain determined and know we can turn the corner. .

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Tow Law Town 2-2 Easington Colliery AFC Saturday 28th August 2021 Ebac Northern League Missed chances again cost the Lawyers all three points. A beautiful summers day for football turned into another struggle for the Lawyers today. Starting again on the front foot the Lawyers took the game to Easington, creating some good early chances. But we’re caught by a sucker punch after 12mins, bossing the game they lost the ball midway in they own half. A Easington shot from 25yrds flew into the top corner giving Lew Graham no chance, to be honest you don’t stop them. Harsh on the lawyers as up till that they were the better team and looked the most likely to score. They got there rewards though on 21mins when live wire Hurworth latched onto a pass inside the box, his shot took a wicked deflection past the poor keeper 1-1. Now playing some good football the Lawyers had Easington pended in there own half. On 37mins Browny broke clear and was bundled down in the box, ref pointed straight at the spot. Penalty Lawyers! Browny dusted himself down and tucked away the spot kick to put the home team 2-1 up. The Lawyers finished the first half strongly and went in to the interval happy at 2-1 up. Think it was one of the better 45mins I’ve seen this season from the Lawyers. Unfortunately the Lawyers were still in the changing rooms on 46 mins as Easington from the kick off strolled through a static defence to make it 2-2. Both teams had second half chances to win it,the Lawyers having the better in my eyes. Easington lost a man on 70mins 2 x yellow = red, unfortunately the Lawyers couldn’t take advantage of the extra man to force the win. Fresh legs were introduced the lively Adam Knowles down the right was a threat every time he ran at the Easington defence. A late flurry of chances from Browny,Hurworth and McAloon kept the supporters on there toes but in all honesty never really threatened the Easington keeper. The game ended 2-2 which Easington were over the moon with, for me the Lawyers should have won it. This will go down as 2 points lost rather that a point gained. They have to dust themselves down quickly and prepare for a tricky midweek game at Carlisle City, who are a point better off than the Lawyers tonight. Man of The Match Mason Hurworth always a threat down the flanks, always willing to take a man on. Growing in confidence by the week. 14

Willington 3-2 Tow Law Town Saturday 11th September 2021 FA Vase Bragging rights are the Blues for the Lawyers. After a terrible run of form in the league, this was a chance for the Lawyers to get a good cup run going. With cup games form goes out of the window and on this showing that proved right as Tow Law bossed the first 45 mins with ease. The Lawyers controlled the game from the off and went 2 nil up through Liam Goldsbough and Matty Moffat after 26 & 27 mins. It was all one way traffic with further chances for Moffat, Teesdale and Goldsbough hitting the bar/post this should have been job done in the first half. Unfortunately in injury time Willington got a life line, and went in at the interval only 1-2 down. You sensed that was a pivotal moment in the game, in all honesty Willington had never been in it. Second half Willington came out a different team and took the game to the Lawyers and equalised on 63 mins. It was turning into a good cup tie, end to end chances for both teams. With time running out and a penalty shootout looming Willington had one last chance on 89mins. A long ball over the top of the lawyers defence was brilliantly controlled by the front man who then lashed an unstoppable shot past the Lawyers keeper to win the game. Hard on the Lawyer’s who had contributed so much into this cup tie. So the Wembley dream is over for another year but at least we had a go. Man of The Match Got to give it to the Willington keeper Robinson who was outstanding. Kept everything out the Lawyers threw at him.

Birtley Town History Birtley’s history in the Northern League can be traced back to the very first season. It all began on Saturday September 7th 1889. Birtley v Elswick Rangers. Birtley: T. Burn, D. Crichton, Beckwith, R. Bell, Murray, J. Kennedy, A. Shaw, T. Knox, A. Standley, P. McAvoy, J. Bolam Referee – Mr J. R. Douglas (Gateshead) Birtley won this game 4-1 with T. Knox and P. McAvoy both scoring twice. J. Nugent (or Junior as he was known) got Elswick’s goal. Controversially, Elswick lodged a protest over the validity of the match and a subsequent Northern League Committee meeting agreed: “ That the match should be counted as drawn, with the scores still standing!” Other games played were Newcastle East End v Darlington, the result being 2-1. South bank v Auckland Town, the result being 3-0. Birtley Town FC reformed in 1993, joining the Wearside League and, at that time, taking their place in the old second division. After just missing out on promotion in their first season for a place in the top flight, Birtley’s second season was to prove more successful. The club won promotion as Champions. On becoming established within Division One Birtley lifted their first major trophy in 1998 by overcoming the newly crowned Champions, Annfield Plain in the League Challenge Cup Final. Four years later the club had a magnificent season in all cup competitions, lifting both the League Challenge Cup and the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup at the expense of Stokesley Sports Club and Redcar, respectively. In the same season they narrowly lost out on a cup treble due to being on the wrong end of a penalty shoot-out result against Jarrow in the Sunderland Shipowners Charity Cup Final. This was followed by completing six consecutive years in reaching the final of the League Cup. In 2002 the club merged with Birtley St. Joseph’s Juniors to expand the club and develop a clear progression route from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s, to develop girls football and the inclusion of a reserve team. This has proven to be very successful and has enabled the club to be awarded the FA Charter Standard Community Club. In the following season of 2002-03, Birtley ended 57 years without a League Championship when they were crowned Wearside League Champions. Unfortunately the League title was not accompanied by promotion as Birtley’s ground did not meet the standards required by the Northern League at the time. With the changing facilities completed in October 2006 accompanied by the addition of floodlighting, it enabled Birtley to gain promotion to the Northern League having completed the 2006-07 season as Champions, a league they stayed in until their relegation at the end of the 2015-16 season. After two seasons in the Northern Football Alliance Premier Division, where the club invested heavily in the infrastructure and continued to rebuild the squad, they were promoted back to the Northern League at the end of the 2017-18 season after finishing second. 22

Birtley Town Pen Pics John Mordey: John is a top GK and an all round cracking player to have around the squad. He’s had a tough time over the last few seasons with persistent injuries, but will hopefully be available before Xmas following an operation on his knee. Once fully fit, he will no doubt be challenging for the #1 shirt. Isaac Robinson: Isaac joined us in pre-season having previously been at Carlisle United. He spent last term on loan at step four side Workington AFC, gaining valuable first team experience at Step 4. Only 18 years of age, Isaac is an exciting prospect and we are delighted to have him on board. Harry Simpson: Moving into his second term with the club and hopefully his first true “full season”, Harry is still a young lad with lots of experience to be gained. He’s a strong all round defender and is comfortable in possession. We believe Harry can have a very strong season for the club. Sam Hedley: Heds is a manager’s dream, honest, reliable and a solid performer. He’s got better more or less every game he’s played for the club and is now one of two Vice Captains. An accomplished defender with a fantastic left foot, he gives us great balance. Adam Ward: This will be a first full season for Wardy, joining The Hoops not long before the halting of last season. A solid and dependable Defender who has been great around both our younger and experienced players already. 28
Owen Lancaster: Owen has also had his fair share of injuries and work commitments over the last few years that have led to a stop start phase in playing. He’s back now and committing full time, he’s an all round defender who adds a lot to the group and I think we’ve a bit more to come from him this season. Dan Hill: Originally a RB/RCB, Hilly moved further forward due to the pure pace he had. He’s moving back to a position that we believe suits his attributes more now and we think he could be a very strong player for us this term once fitness is fully up to scratch. Josh Holland: Mr Dependable, Josh is your solid 7/10 or 8/10 close on every week. He’s perfect for the way we play, he’s a great kid and we think Josh will be a great player for us this season. Alex Morland: A new signing for the club this season from Seaham Red Star, Alex is a flier down the left hand side. He’s strong defensively, very fit and quick and he also delivers a hell of a ball in, which I think our forwards and midfielders will appreciate as the season goes on. Dylan Rutherford: Dylan is one of two players that we’ve signed from Hebburn U23s this season, a young player who will take a little time to get up to full speed as it’s a big jump, but he has all of the desire and ability to be a success at this level. Ben Garrity: Ben returns for a third stint at the club. He’s a great kid, a very good
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
player, and a real club man. Ben just needs to get his head down and work to get back fully into the squad after some time away from playing. Scott McArdle: Scott is likely to miss most of this coming season due to injury but is still highly regarded in our squad, and we hope to see the tough tackling midfielder back available ASAP. Cameron Hood: Following almost 18 months out Cameron has only just returned to training so will take time to be available, but again he’s a great member of our squad on and off the field. As well as being a strong and reliable player when fit and available. We’re working to help Cameron get back to where he needs to be as soon as possible. Jack Honour: Our skipper for his second season, Jack has bags of Northern League experience and he is looking like he is back to his punching weight and fitness. A true midfielder who can be essential to our success this season. Cristian Campos-Loughlin: Cris had almost 12 months away from the squad due to being away in Tenerife with family, but will be returning soon to fight for his shirt and place in the squad. He’s got bags and bags of potential, just needs a consistent run of availability to have the impact that we know he wants to have. Lewis Orrell: One of our new signings, Lewis is a player we’ve been looking to sign for a little while now and we’re over the moon to have him with us. A very composed and creative midfield player who has slotted straight into the squad no problem. Kaleb Young: A midfielder with the potential to take hold of any game and
leave his mark. Kaleb is a full all round midfielder, he had his first part season with the club last year and will be a real asset to the club this coming season. Apex Tshisekedi: Apex is another new signing who comes with a little Northern League First Division experience at Newcastle Benfield. Strong and technically capable midfield player who can go box to box. We’re expecting big things from Apex once he finds his feet at the club. Kelvin Thear: Kelvin is another who will sadly miss the start of the season through injury, but we hope that he will be back sooner rather than later. A real danger to defenders as was proven at the end of last season and a great lad as well. James Norton: Returning to the club 4 seasons after an initial short spell when we were in the alliance. James has a wand of a left foot and now his experience at senior level to go with that. A late capture in pre-season, but one that could prove vital. Ricky Tanoh: Ricky will return from working away in September so will take a little time to get up to speed, but we’re over the moon to still have him with the club. Ricky has matured into a really dangerous player who not only has raw pace, but now experience and an ever improving end product too. Davey Stevens: Back from a trip away to Australia, Davey is a dangerous forward player with pace in abundance. He scored and assisted in the games at the end of last season and can be a handful for defenders.

Harry Munday: A new signing from Silksworth in the summer, Harry could be a great find. Pacey and direct with an eye for goal already, he’s into his first season in the Northern League so will need a little time, but we’re hopeful of a big impact this season. Joe Barwick: Vice Captain and a real leader in the squad, Joe is a true goalscorer and a great person to have at the club as well off the field. A player who genuinely wants to succeed and loves scoring goals, not to mention he works as hard, if not harder than any other player off the ball. Andrew Clarkson: Big Clarky is a local lad who was at Birtley around 6 years ago for a short spell. Returning with a hell of a lot more experience, he’s capable of giving us another dimension to our play. Not forgetting that he can play as well and if our supply into him is right, he can score a hatful.
