The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & welcome to Ironworks Road for today’s EBAC Northern League fixture against Blyth Town. Blyth Town are visiting ourselves today, in their second spell in the EBAC Northern League, having gained promotion from the Northern Alliance. Sadly, we have to report the passing on 28th September of our former physio, Kenny Taylor. Prior to today’s game, we will pay our respects to Kenny with a minutes silence. Kenny was Tow Law through & through, serving the Club during the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, along with his wife Agnes. Once his son started playing Northern League football, Kenny would travel to Willington, where David was a regular 1st team player. If memory serves me correctly, he also helped out as a Committee member with Willington. The picture below shows Kenny, with David & the victorious Tow Law team in the Rothmans Cup. We pass on our sympathy to David & his family. Rest in Peace Kenny. Steve Moralee, Club Secretary

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) Another tough game this afternoon against Blyth Town, it should be a good watch for both sets of supporters. We have been fairly pleased with our form over the last 4 games, results have been more consistent and the lads have worked really hard and deserve credit for the recent results. Once again we must adjust the team due to injuries and work commitments, which is now becoming normal, however we must just adjust and get on with things.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Tow Law Town 2-1 Ryton & Crawcrook Saturday 25th September 2021 Ebac Northern League Division 2 Super Sub Lake makes the difference. The Lawyers turned in an impressive display against top four Ryton here at the Ironworks. It was always going to be a tight affair, 3 weeks ago away at Ryton there was only one goal in it and it proved the same today. The Lawyers had good first half chances the best from Pearson & McAloon but couldn’t break the deadlock. Ryton’s only real chance was from a free kick, but the Lawyers keeper Orton was equal to it. So 0-0 at the interval suited both teams to be honest. The second half started a lot brighter for the Lawyers and with the introduction of teenager Drew Lake the pace and play quickened. The Lawyers made the breakthrough on 52 minutes when teenager Lake danced past 3 defenders to square the ball to Teasdale to side foot home 1-0. The Lawyers doubled their lead on 65 minutes with roles reversed this time Teasdale worked an opening to curl a shot which rebounded of the post. Youngster Lake was on hand though to drill the rebound home 2-0. It was what the Lawyers deserved as they were the better team second half. Ryton got a lifeline on 75 minutes with a volley from 30 yards giving keeper Orton no chance. Last 10 minutes the Lawyers had to dig deep when they went down to 10 men when Brown was sent off for violent conduct. But to be honest over 90 minutes Tow Law deserved the 3 points. Man of The Match Front men for me today thought Lewis Teasdale was brilliant. But going for youngster Drew Lake as his introduction won the game for the Lawyers.

Blyth Town History Established in February 1995, Blyth Town started as a junior football club with only 3 boys teams, at a time where our town had the reputation of “Drugs Capital of the North East”. Three couples put in funding to start the Club with the aim to give the children and young people of Blyth something to be involved with and proud of. Year after year thereafter the club grew, taking the oldest team all the way through to under 18’s in the 2000/01 season. In the meantime we established a girls’ section and again this section of the club grew with each year. Girls’ football was a relatively new sport and we believe we played a huge part in promoting and growing the game within the region. The biggest step for the club was the introduction of adult football – we launched our adult section in the 2002/03 season. Our men’s first team were on the cusp of promotion into the Northern League when COVID-19 hit and all movement at our level was halted. Although disappointed at the time, we were determined and confident in the quality of our squad to eventually get us promotion. We are proud to have achieved that aim are starting our campaign in the Northern League for the 2021-2022 season At the start of 2020-21 we entered a development men’s team into the Northern Alliance League, Division 3, an ideal vessel for our young players to transit from junior into senior football. We lost our full ladies squad and several junior girl’s squads to the professional game in 20052006 and we are proud to now boast that several of those girls are in the England National Squad, including Lucy Bronze, deemed by many to be the best in the World. Since losing so many girls and young ladies, the Club has strived to rebuild, our girls section is ever growing and our re-established Ladies are now progressing through the league system. Previous and current senior players are now starting families of their own and we are seeing everincreasing numbers of their children joining, underpinning the family feel of our Club, which has always been our ultimate aim. In some cases 3 generations are involved in some capacity. We are currently running 27 teams – under 6 boys to men and under 8 girls to Ladies. Throughout our growth high standards have been maintained and because of this, and the fact that the club provides football from age 4 to adult, in December 2002 we received the accolade of ‘Community Club’ from the F.A. - Blyth Town are proud to have been the first club in the North East to have received this recognition. Due to this status, the Club were able to negotiate a 25 year lease on land/facilities at South Newsham and South Beach. With funding from a development fund and a successful Football Foundation bid, a £1M extensive refurbishment and development of the site, which was handed over to the Club in December 2007. At last we had a home for our Club where we could continue to grow. Since then our facilities have been improved upon the most recent addition being a 3G training area and an extension to the clubhouse in the form of a function/community room. We continue to strive to provide the best environment for our Club and Community. 30
