The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & welcome to Ironworks Road for our EBAC Northern League game today. Our opponents today are Brandon United, who include a number of familiar faces in their party, Steve Murray, Matty Thompson, Dave Mitchell, Glenn Caygill, Kai Hewitson & Paul Gardiner to name but a few. A warm welcome to them all. After an unbeaten run of 14 games, unfortunately we lost last week to Heaton Stannington. Michael, Warren & the squad will be looking to get back to winning ways. Off field, Wayne continues to provide monthly band nights in the Clubhouse. Watch out for the poster for next week further into the programme. We continue to offer the cheapest drinks in town & would happily welcome everyone along. A couple of our rival Clubs have recently had GoFundMe appeals for help. We can assure you that Tow Law Town AFC remains in a strong position. However, all help is greatly appreciated via sponsorship or volunteering to help with the running of the Club. Enjoy today’s game, try a drink or 2 in the Clubhouse & some refreshment from our canteen, staffed by Megan & Lisa. Thank you, Steve Moralee, on behalf of Tow Law Town AFC

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) Today we welcome Brandon to Ironworks Road, with what should be an entertaining game. Brandon have a lot of familiar faces in their ranks which we welcome back and are also on a decent run of form. Our squad is almost back to full fitness with Callum Williams, Aaron Hardie and Matty Robson only a week or two off returning from injury. We are really looking forward to get a good run of games under our belt as the stop start over the last few months doesn’t allow any consistency. The lads have trained well so we are sure they will be up for this massive game.

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Redcar Town 1-1 Tow Law Town Saturday 22nd January 2022 Ebac Northern League Division 2 ALL SQUARE AND NO COMPLAINTS. This was one of those games where you come away thinking: “Yep, a draw was the right result.” Despite all their efforts, and each side having good spells, there wasn’t much to separate the teams. Neither could have any complaints about the result. For almost 20 minutes they traded chances; Redcar’s Gary Redman sending over a cross just out of the reach of Mike Davis and then a cross by Tow Law No. 9 Tommy McAloon cleared by Joe Bennett close to his own line. That was followed by a couple of long range shots by both teams before a Carl Williams snap shot forced a diving save by Tow Law keeper Lewis Graham and then Kyran Clark hitting a half volley over the bar. Then it was Tow Law’s turn: Lewis Murphy driving forward into the Redcar box with his shot stopped with his legs by Redcar keeper Mike Algie. A couple of minutes later Murphy hit a stinging shot that was palmed down by Algie. Redcar edged ahead in the 20th minute – Williams taking a long ball, holding off a defender before firing it past Graham. The game then became very tetchy, in particular some heated exchange of views between Redcar No. 3 Scott Howes and Tow Law right back Barrie Smith. At one point referee Dave Carr had to have a word or two (or three) with both captains to calm tempers down. The players re-focussed on the game in the last couple of minutes of the half; Adam Knowles twice cutting in from the left before shooting and then a Clark shot producing an instinctive, reflex save by Graham. For more than quarter of an hour at the start of the second half the game developed into a midfield stalemate. Tow Law then started to edge the play, testing the Redcar defence with balls into the box, with last man clearances. The visitors got their equaliser in the 78th minute. Redcar failed to clear their lines and McAloon managed to squeeze in between a couple of defenders before stroking the ball past Algie. Both teams pushed forward in the last 10 minutes in search of a winner – Clark with a powerful shot blocked by Graham and then Tow Law players unable to get a touch on the ball as it bounced around the Redcar area. The last chance came Matty Robson’s way, but the Tow Law No. 5 could only pull his shot wide. Not spectacular, but a very solid Division Two contest. 26

Brandon United History Brandon United were originally formed as a Sunday morning side called Rostrons, the name of the waste paper company where most of the founders worked. They began by playing in the Durham & District Sunday League in 1968/69, Joining the Third Division and gradually played their way up to the First Division. They were basically local lads, however the inclusion of Northern League and Wearside League players turned the club into one of the most powerful Sunday football sides in the North East. From 1968/69 until 1976/77 they were First Division champions four times, Durham County FA. Sunday Cup winners three times, then the ultimate, F.A. Sunday Cup winners in 1975/76, defeating Evergreen 2-1. One of Brandon United’s highlights came in 1979/80 when entering the F.A. Cup for the first time, they reached the first round proper, on the way taking care of Northern League opponents Spennymoor United, Tow Law Town, South Bank and North Shields. In the first round proper, Brandon were beaten 3-0 by Football League opponents Bradford City, in a game played at Spennymoor. The club joined the Wearside League in 1981/82, winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. The following season they reached the quarter finals of the F.A. Vase and repeated the same the following season. Brandon United’s dream came true when they were admitted to the Northern League’s Second Division for the start of 1983/84 season and won the Second Division title the following season. In 1988 United once again reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup playing Doncaster Rovers twice at Belle Vue before losing 1-2. In 1992/93 Brandon played Seaham Red Star in the League Cup final at Bedford Terrace home of Billingham Town, only to lose after a penalty shoot out. At the start of the 1998/1999 season Brandon appointed Ken Lindoe as manager and the clubs fortunes began to change. He brought a number of players with him to Brandon and started the team rebuilding job. He quickly assembled a team that could compete in the league and also play good attacking football. In season 2000/2001 he led the team into Division One as champions. A season of consolidation then followed, but with further strengthening of the team came Brandon United’s finest moment; the League Championship was attained in 2002/2003 and the club were Champions of the Northern League. The following seasons until the present day have been rather tumultuous for Brandon United both on and off the pitch. The couple of years following the League Championship saw management, players and committee all leave the club as finances stretched the club to breaking point. A few seasons of flirting with relegation finally happened and the club were relegated back to the 2nd division at the end of the 2005/06 season.
32
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
A bit of stability was required and following a further season of consolidation Adam Furness joined the club as assistant to BJ Heijmanns and the club again started to rebuild. Although results on the field were poor this really was the start of the club getting back on its feet football wise. The club finished bottom of the league but, with no relegation taking effect, it survived to play again in the Northern League. Younger players with a seasons experience behind them and the recruitment of some senior and more experienced players meant the club finished a very respectable 6th in 2008/09. Relative success caught the eye of other clubs however, and many players left the following season, most to 1st Division teams. Since then, the Club has a number of seasons where they have flirted with the very real danger of relegation from the Northern League, only to gain a reprieve each year Managers have come and gone and with them the players, every season starts as a rebuilding process. A best placed finish since 2009 of 14th occurred in 2009 under the care of Lee Jewitt and Chris Blakelock. 2017/18 saw a ‘re-branding’ of the club which had new strips, a new club badge and much needed renovation of the changing rooms. But with the team in 10th position Lee Jewett left again. Whilst a successor was being found the club struggled and plummeted to the bottom of the table. Stephen Skinner was brought in at the helm and who brought with him a host of experience at a higher level and a host of new faces with similar experience and whose primary role was to get Brandon United away from the relegation zone and safe in our Northern League position. This was ultimately achieved on the very last day of the 2017/18 season with a home win whilst others in danger around us were losing. With a massive re-haul of the National Non-League pyramid we escaped relegation – again, by a single point. The summer of 2019 also saw another overhaul, with long term members Bill Fisher and Barry Ross leaving the club. Amidst rumours of a complete closure, the remaining members appointed Rob Bowron as first team manager, in his first role as a NL Manager. This brought a complete overhaul in the committee too, with fresh faces being appointed throughout, giving a real new energy to the club - a modern feel to a history club with the simple task of bringing the community and spirit back to Brandon. We are still in the process of rebuilding and the Club has a vision of giving youth a chance wherever possible. We also aim to reintegrate ourselves back into the community and to this end there are now nearly twelve ‘youth teams’ associated with the Club and we have just set up our first Brandon United U13 girl’s team. With other developments in the background, the future we hope looks secure and bright for our great club!

Brandon United Pen Pics Carl Robinson (Goalkeeper): A hugely talented young keeper with great shopping and outstanding distribution.
Isam has become a popular figure with his pace, work rate and vocal ability. Very useful and important.
Ben Joyeux (Fullback): An energetic fullback who is a popular figure in the dressing room and on the field. A greater leader and vocal presence too, looking to get the best from all his teammates.
Robson Brown (Defender/Central Midfield): A Brandon lad, Robson brings a presence both on and off the field. Physically excellent, Robson can play throughout the central areas and is a hugely popular figure in the dressing room playing for his hometown team!
Peter Gillis (Left Back/Centre Midfield): The former Hartlepool United Academy graduate is another talented player who seems ready physically to step up to the Northern League. He has a great engine, as well as bringing calm and quality in possession. Chris Storey (Defender): Chris is a real coup for the club, having previously worked with Rob at Junior level. He is much more experienced and physical now however and is a hugely influential character with great organisational skills. Michael Haley (Defender): Michael is the epitome of a one club man having been at the club since the age of 14 - he’s only 24 now! His knowledge and views of the game are of the highest quality, as well as possessing the arial ability and physicality to be a great defender at this level. Mark Brown (Defender): A local talented centre defending who is equally as good with head and feet. As well as defending solidly, we will be able to spring an attack with his range of passing. A very calming influence. Isam Mohamed (Defender): Having moved from Durham City this season, 34
James Connor (Forward): Strong, hard working, great in the air, great touch able to use his team mates around him - all the qualities of a great centre forward. Lewis Martin (Forward): A powerful centre forward who has scored goals at all his clubs. He returns to Brandon after a spell in 2014 and will be key in leading the line and producing a goal return. Jordan Lee (Winger): Having been at Brandon Under 23 for some years, Jordan made the switch to adult football a couple of seasons under Rob and he has now brought his skills to the first team. Technically very good when running at defenders, Jordan may have a very useful first Northern League campaign. Craig Moody (Forward/Winger): Craig’s first season in adult Saturday football came at Coxhoe last season, where he was successful in scoring goals for the bottom side. He has electric pace and a great first touch, and we are sure in time will score goals at this level too. Craig Foster (Goalkeeper): Craig is a very talented goalkeeper who has a great deal to offer both now and in the future.
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
His handling and shot stopping are second to none, as is his effort and dedication. With Northern League experience, we believe he can go far! Alex Dobinson (Midfielder): Moving into his second season with the club, Alex has now been moved to midfield where he will have more influence on the game. Good in a tackle, fine in the air and a great distribution are all good attributes to this new role. Kieran Alderson (Midfielder): Having been at the club for a couple of years, Kieran is one of the longest serving members despite only being 20! A midfielder than keeps the play moving as well as having an excellent work rate which makes him an important part of the squad. Matthew Lovegreen (Forward): Matty has moved around a few clubs in his early years, each bringing a level of success. As a forward, he looks to know where the net is and will be able to use his already found experience to make partnerships with the other forwards. Brad Chisholm (Forward/Winger): A very exciting talent who joined towards the end of 2018/19 season. He possesses great pace and electric feet, with a great work ethic. He’s always enthusiastic to learn, which adds to our certainty he will be a big hit in the coming season. Liam Bain (Forward): Having worked with Rob for 5 seasons, Liam is well adapted to expectations. However he has had a torrid time with recurrent cruciate injuries over the last 2 years but is now back, fit and ready to tackle the Northern League Challenge. Strong on the ball and a powerful technique, he will trouble defences.
Jack Bromley (Midfield): A very tidy midfielder who poses a great range of passing as well as being a great character in the dressing room. He was an important member in the second half of last campaign, and will play a key role this one for sure. Leigh Guthrie (Midfield): Another very tidy turn with a great array of experience to added to this. His right foot can be a wand and will give added quality to the team. Harry Thompson (Defender): Another local young talented defender, both in and away from possession. Tall and great in the air, and has also shown the early signs of being a good leader too. His range of passing from central defence is a huge attribute. Lewis Charlton (Winger): A hugely talented attacking players who is another product of the Foundation of Light. Blistering pace and an incredible work rate, making a very positive impact in the back end of the 2018/19 season. Matthew Johnson (Midfielder): A powerful tackler and great work rate are attributes to Matty, as well as an occasional caution! Michael Owens (Defender): Michael brings a real football experience to the group, and will be key in supporting the development of the younger squad members. His knowledge of the game is great asset still. Sean Tarling (Midfielder): Sean is an incredible Northern League professional, who many should look up to. Hard tackling and a born leader, he brings an incredible experience to this otherwise young squad and will be hugely important on the field and in the dressing room.
