The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & welcome to Ironworks Road for today’s EBAC Northern League fixture with Chester-Le-Street. With both teams in good form, let’s look forward to a cracking game. As a Club, sadly we have to report the loss of another member of the Tow Law Town football family with the passing of Mary Hail. Mary was a lifelong supporter of the club. I believe she attended her first game as a 14 year old girl. A legend in local football circles, she supported our team through thick & thin, whilst berating any referee regardless reputations. Mark Clattenburg will certainly vouch for that. It was whilst Clattenburg was a guest speaker in our Clubhouse that Mary raised vital monies with a sponsored silence. Many, myself included, doubted she would do it. She did. Many an opposition goalkeeper also took a tongue lashing. One incident springs to mind, it may be true it may be rumour. Tony Brunton had left Tow Law, returning with Willington. Not only did he get a verbal volley, its rumoured he felt the full weight of Mary’s brolley. Was Mary the first Misfit? Mary will be missed, not only at the Club but within the whole Town. R.I.P. Mary

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) Chester-le-Street at home should be a very good game as both teams are in a good run of form. Our squad have trained hard this week and are ready for this test which will be physical and tactically challenging. We are getting back to almost full strength which increases competition for places, no player can slacken off as there is another waiting to take his place. We must mention that all current and ex-players were saddened to hear the passing of Mary Hail age 85 this week. Mary was an absolute stalwart supporter over the years, some knew her as “Megaphone Mary” as she was literally the voice of Tow Law Town before, during and after games. Her memory will live with us forever.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Tow Law Town 1-0 Esh Winning Friday 29th October 2021 Ebac Northern League Division 2 Hardy the difference in derby game. Switched to a Friday night under the lights this game entertained the the 152 supporters right to the end. The Lawyers started the game well on 10 minutes Alfie Pearn connected with a great header from a corner which was cleared on the line. On 20 minutes another corner another goal line clearance this time from John Jury denied by the defender on the back post. Lawyers on top and consent pressure produced another chance for Alfie Pearn, who again beat the keeper but last ditch defending from Esh cleared off the line again. The Lawyers were knocking on the door but couldn’t quite get that opening goal. Last 10 minutes of the half Esh started to play and finished the first half well. Esh carried that into the second half forcing Lawyers keeper Orton into making some important saves. It took a good 15 minutes for the Lawyers to get a foot hold back into the game. Adam Knowles cut in from the left to send a screaming shot just over the bar. Lewis Teasdale had a couple of great chances but unfortunately just couldn’t get that killer touch to give the Lawyers the lead. The Lawyers broke the deadlock on 80 minutes when Adam Knowles pinged a 30 yard pass across field. Aaron Hardy controlled it brilliantly turned the defender then fired it into the net 1-0. A classy finish from an inform striker, it gave the Lawyers a hard fought 3 points. Yes Esh played there part in this but the Lawyers just did enough to edge this entertaining derby. Man of the Match Alfie Pearn was a pain for Esh’s defenders every time he had tha ball. Did everything but score.

Chester-Le-Street History The club was founded in 1972 when a group of enthusiasts got together in a local public house and formed a football team which was called Chester-le-Street Garden Farm after the pub in which the idea germinated. The club entered the Newcastle City Amateur League that same year and played on a pitch in Low Fell because none were available in Chester-le-Street. However, after one season, they were allotted a pitch at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street which was to be their home until 1977. In 1975 the Cestrians joined the Washington League, winning the Championship, the Durham Minor Cup and the Washington Aged Miners Cup. By then flourishing, the team moved to the Sacriston C.W. ground in 1977 and were admitted into the Wearside League. The following years, they changed their name to Chester-le-Street Town Football Club. Over the next few years, the club won the Wearside League title and the Monkwearmouth Cup on two occasions. In 1980 the club moved to what is still its present home at Chester Moor. The old Colliery Welfare Ground only had dressing rooms and a perimeter fence. Over £100,000 was spent bringing the ground up to Northern League standards. A stand seating 160 and covered terracing were built. In recent years, new floodlights have been erected and new dressing rooms were built in 2000. The club was admitted into the Northern League in 1983 and won the Second Division Championship at their first attempt. Their best run in the FA Vase came in 1985 when they reached the Fifth Round only to lose to eventual runners-up Fleetwood Town in a second replay. Since then they have been relegated twice, the last time in 1996-97 and they again won the Second Division Championship the following season. They returned to the First Division in 2015-16 but their stay only lasted one year. The club lifted it’s first trophy in the 2017-18 season when they won the Ernest Armstrong Cup. The club is proud to call itself a family club, catering to the needs of the district by providing football for all. The new clubhouse was finally completed in December 2020.
