T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) We welcome Crook this evening for our first Derby this season. Crook are on a good run of form and will be formidable opponents, I am sure the game will be exciting for both sets of fans. We are still finding our feet this season but each game we can see an improvement and we are confident that form will become more consistent over the coming weeks. Nothing comes easy in football it’s all about hard work and determination to succeed, the inconsistent results can frustrate you but they also provide a drive to push on and improve. Saturday proved that the group are resilient and won’t give up. We still have a fairly extensive injury list, Matty Moffat, Scott Oldfield, Mark Pattison, Jake Thompson, Lewis Miner and Jay White all still unavailable. Our physio Gina is working hard to get these lads back on the pitch, when we get them back the squad will be really strong.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

North Shields 3-0 Tow Law Town Saturday 19th September 2020 Drawn away from home against one of the big boys in the first division was always going to be an uphill task for the lawyers. They got off to the worst possible start conceding a scrappy own goal on 11 minutes. The North Shields team was full of quality and built on that lead with goals in the 25th minute and the 34th minute to go in at half-time three nil up. The lawyers did have their moments in the first half but without really threatening the opposition keeper. It became obvious from the first minute in the second half that the lawyers and had a good talking to at half time, they started on the front foot and took the game to North Shields. with the lawyers keeping it tight at the back this was frustrating Shields. TowLaw were now creating chances and to be honest were very unlucky not to be rewarded with at least one if not two goals in the second half. The second-half finished nil nil which I think the lawyers manager would’ve took considering the way they conceded the three goals first half. So unfortunately the lawyers run in the FA vase comes to End for yet another year, but with a good second-half display this can offer a bit of confidence going into the next league game against top of the table Easington. Man of the match for me was debutant Thomas McAloon, played out on the wing first half. Then up front second half, good solid 90 mins. Think we can expect a lot from Thomas in the coming months.

Durham City 2-2 Tow Law Town Saturday 26th September 2020 After 2 defeats in a week the Lawyers desperately needed something out of this game to kick start there faltering season. They started on the front foot and were very unlucky not to go ahead early on, when Michael Brown broke clear but his shot rebounded off the upright. It was one way traffic from the Lawyers chances coming and going but unable to grab that vital first goal. Then the Lawyers we’re hit with a sucker punch, Durham with there first and only real chance of the first half took the lead. Hard to take for the Lawyers but that’s football! Second half was much the same with the Lawyers on the front foot from the off. They quickly got there reward on 46mins when Michael Brown burst into the penalty area and calmly tucked the ball under the keeper to make it 1-1. The Lawyers tails were up now and we’re pushing for the winner. They went 2-1 up from the penalty spot when Barrie Smith converted, after Michael Brown was fouled in the box. This you thought would settle the nerves but within 10 minutes Durham were back level with a break away goal of quality. Give the Lawyers credit they threw everything at the Durham goal in the last 10 mins but to no avail. The Lawyers are lacking confidence and composure in the final third and unfortunately this is costing them dearly at the minute. Man of the Match for me was midfielder Barrie Smith his work rate is non stop with or without the ball. A born winner who can also take a mean penalty.

Crook Town AFC History Crook joined the Northern League in 1896 and first won the Amateur Cup in 1901 beating Kings Lynn 3 - 0 at Ipswich after a 1 - 1 draw at Dover Court in Essex. In 1913 Crook toured Barcelona to help establish football as the main sport in the region of Catalonia instead of bullfighting. Feeling was so high against this that King Alfonso of Spain who had hoped to attend the three games but couldn’t do so because of the attempts on his life. Crook man Jack Greenwell organised the tour and went on to become the first English manager of Barcelona until the mid-thirties when he took over the Spanish national side until the civil war. He managed Peru in 1938 which capped off a remarkable life for the son of a miner! There were two further successful tours to Barcelona during the 1920-21 & 1921-22 seasons. The infamous ‘Crook Town Affair’ where several players and officials were suspended for making illegal payments to amateur players made front page news in 1928. Crook became a semi-professional club during the 1930-31 season as Crook F.C. and reached the third round of The F.A. Cup for the only time during the 1931-32 season. Centre forward Colin Cook scored a remarkable 72 goals that season. The 1936-37 season saw Crook revert back to amateur status and became Crook Town. During the 1945-46 season Crook Town become Crook Colliery Welfare. In 1949 Crook reached the semi-final of the Amateur Cup losing 3 - 0 at West Ham to Romford after a 2 -2 draw at Roker Park. In the early 1950’s gates of 10,000 were the norm for cup ties. The highest recorded gate was 17,000 plus v Walton and Hersham in a 0 - 0 draw. That season Crook were involved in the first non-league cup tie to be shown live on TV on a Saturday afternoon that saw Crook winning 3 - 1 at Romford in front of a 13,000 crowd. Crook won the Amateur Cup in the 1953 - 54 season playing in the longest cup final ever v Bishop Auckland with 200,000 in attendance over the three games. The final scores for the three games were 2 - 2 A.E.T. at Wembley, 2 - 2 A.E.T. at St. James Park and 1 - 0 to Crook at Ayresome Park. Crook played Derby County in the first round of the FA Cup during the 1955-56 season drawing 2 - 2 at the Millfield, but losing 5 - 1 away in the replay. Crook were League champions and Amateur Cup winners beating Barnet 3 - 2 in the final at Wembley in the 1958-59 season. 28
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
In the 1961-62 season Crook once again won the Amateur Cup beating Hounslow Town 4 - 0 at Ayresome Park after a 1- 1 draw at Wembley. During the 1962-63 season Crook had a two match tour of Norway. Crook defeating a South Norway XI 4 - 3, but were beaten 3 - 2 the next day to Vikings. Crook were Amateur Cup winners in the 1963-64 season beating Enfield 2 - 1 at Wembley. During the 1964-65 season Crook beat Carlisle 1 - 0 in the first round of the F.A. Cup, but lost 1 - 0 to Oldham Athletic in the second round. In 1976 Crook became the first English club to tour India playing six games. A gate of 100,000 watched Crook play the Indian national side, but they were beaten 1 - 0 in 90 degree temperatures. During the late 70’s there was an increase of interest and also brief revivals during the 80’s and 90’s and the early part of the new century, but without the help and encouragement of Sir Tom Cowie the club would not have survived. The 2015/16 season was probably the club’s worst season on record and may well have seen the demise of the club but for the return of Vince Kirkup as Chairman who will need no introduction around the North East football circuit. That season was always going to be a one of survival and consolidation on both the financial and the playing front, and so it proved to be with previous debts satisfied and an 18th of 22 place finish securing our Ebac Northern League 2nd Division status. After a good start to the 2017/18 season our form started to drop off and our results on the field showed this, the main problem being the amount of goals we concede. After a short time in Charge, manager Wilf Constantine and his team decided to step down, as they believed they had taken the club as far as it could go, this was following a home defeat to Thornaby. Following Wilf’s departure we wanted to act quickly to appoint his successor, there was no shortage of applicants. After taking a couple of days to sort things out we appointed Chris Lax whose previous club was Richmond Town where he managed for 5 years and built a very successful side. But another disappointing season ended with a 18th place finish one place lower than when they took over & though this was enough to maintain our Ebac Northern League status this was only done by default due to the resignation of Jarrow Roofing and Boro Rangers unable to secure a ground share. So it was decided to part company with Chris Lax and his management team at the end of last season and install former player and Billingham Synthonia manager Jamie Tunstall as manager with another former Crook Town player Matthew Coad as his assistant. Jamie & Matthew will be assisted by Anthony Verity & Michael Colman who make up the coaching team.
