T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) We welcome Horden for the first time in a long time, it’s good to see this club back in the Northern League. They are a team that like to play football in the right way, so it should be a good game for both sets of supporters. We are on a decent run at present however we can not slacken off, we have achieved good results of late due to hard work on and off the pitch so must maintain this level of work rate. At present the squad is a bit thin on the ground due to some long term injuries and suspensions so it is highly likely we will need to bring in a couple of new recruits over the coming weeks.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Tow Law Town 1-0 Blyth Town Saturday 9th October 2021 Ebac Northern League Division 2 Richardson goal the difference at the Ironworks. It wasn’t a thrilling game but this 1-0 hard fought win moved the Lawyers up to 10th in the league. 4 wins and a draw sees the Lawyers go unbeaten in 5 games. Not a lot between these two teams today, both cancelling each other out early on. First half was a hard watch for the home supporters. Don’t get me wrong the Lawyers had their chances, Joel Pearson first, who found space in the box but pushed his shot wide. Liam Goldsborough got an awful bobble to see his shot skywards, and Thomas McAloon’s shot dragged wide. So on chances alone the Lawyers should have gone in at the interval ahead, but at 0-0 it was the Blyth team the happiest. Second half was a bit better, the Lawyers having upped the tempo the attacking play looked a lot better. The flying Aaron Hardy causing panic in the Blyth defence every time he had the ball. Matty Moffat came on second half and gave us a target man to feed off, another plus for the Lawyers. The consent pressure paid off when on 50 minutes a corner was swung into the Blyth penalty area, the presence of Lawyers Lewis Milner totally unsettled the defence giving Daz Richardson the chance to head home the only goal of the game. Further chances for Moffat and Hardy should have put the game to bed but at 1-0 Blyth always had a chance. With the solid back four for the Lawyers and the experience of Orton in goal it was always going to be hard for the away team. To be honest other than a deflected shot onto the post Blyth never really threatened the Lawyers goal. Hardy continued to torture the Blyth back line right up to the final whistle, (great second half young man). So it finished 1-0 to the Lawyers and another 3 points, not a classic but we’ll take it. Man of the Match Going defence today, thought the back four were solid all afternoon, Lewis Milner in particular. (He’ll not thank me for it) but going for Lewis today.

HOW TO DO CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR for short, is a simple life-saving technique given to someone in cardiac arrest. It aims to take over the job of the heart and lungs by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

CHECK FOR DANGER

Look around for risks to make sure you won’t be putting yourself in danger by helping.

!

CHECK FOR RESPONSE

Gently shake the person by the shoulders and ask if they can hear you.

SHOUT FOR HELP

If you don’t get a response and the person is not breathing or not breathing normally (do not put your face next to theirs when checking), they are in cardiac arrest and you should shout for someone to help you.

CALL 999

Call 999 and make sure an ambulance is on its way. You will be talked through what to do and given the location of a defibrillator if there is one nearby.

COVER MOUTH AND NOSE WITH CLOTH

If you think there is a risk of infection, place a cloth, towel or piece of clothing loosely over the patient’s mouth and nose.

START HANDS-ONLY CPR

Put your two hands together and interlock your fingers, place your hands in the centre of the chest and push hard and fast to the beat of Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark. Keep going until professional help arrives or the person starts to regain consciousness.

USE A DEFIBRILLATOR Please see our ‘How to use a defibrillator’ poster.

Horden CW History Horden Community Welfare were formed in 2017 following the demise of the old Horden CW to bring Saturday football back to the Welfare Park and the village of Horden. The club were formed by a loyal group who knew the value of a football club in Horden, and having secured the facilities of the Welfare Park, the club entered the Durham Alliance League for the 2017-2018 season. In their first season, Horden Community Welfare finished second in the Durham Alliance League, and with league winners Wheatley Hill WMC not taking promotion, Horden were promoted to the Wearside League. Not only was promotion achieved, but the Marras won both the Clem Smith Bowl and the League Challenge Cup while in the Durham Alliance. Having stepped up to the Wearside League, Horden Community Welfare’s first season in the Wearside League was one of consolidation. Consolidate their spot in the Wearside League is exactly what Jonny Payne’s men did, with an eighth-place finish in the league table. Of their 30 games, the Marras won 16, while drawing one and losing 13. The Marras may have finished mid-table in 2018-2019, but the season will always be remembered as the season Horden Community Welfare won the Shipowners Cup. Having beaten Farringdon Detached, Darlington RA and Harton & Westoe CW to reach the final, the Marras beat Hebburn Town Reserves by two goals to one at Hebburn Sports Club to lift the Shipowners Cup. Peter Crawford and Matty Hughes were on the scoresheet for Horden that early May Bank Holiday. Having spent a season in the Wearside League and with Wearside League silverware, the Marras really kicked on in the 2019-2020 season, and they were top of the league with 55 points from 23 games when the season was stopped in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season was eventually declared null and void, and the Marras hopes of promotion to the Northern League were pushed back a further year. Eleven games into the 2020-2021 season, Horden Community Welfare were sitting second in the Wearside League with 24 points, but the season was once again declared null and void. Having applied for promotion, the Marras wish was granted when the FA announced Horden Community Welfare had been promoted to the Northern League on the 18th of May 2021. The 2020-2021 season wasn’t quite finished at that point for the Marras though, as victories against Gateshead Rutherford, Norton & Stockton Ancients and Silksworth CW had secured a spot in the final of the Durham Trophy. Farringdon Detached were the opposition at Seaham Town Park, and a David Doughty brace alongside an own goal proved enough for the Marras to win 3-2 and lift the Durham Trophy. 24

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”

2021-2022 will be Horden Community Welfare’s first ever season in the Northern League. Horden Welfare Park has hosted Northern League football in the past – most recently when the old club were relegated in 2013 – but with a new club, fresh ideas and a loyal support at the Welfare Park, the future of Horden Community Welfare looks exciting. The team is managed by Jonny Payne who has been in charge since the club formed in 2017. Jonny – a former Horden player – has guided the club from the Durham Alliance to the Northern League, and the 2021-2022 season will be his first experience of Northern League football as a manager.

Horden CW Pen Pics Goalkeepers: Paul Griffith: Griff signed for the Marras in the 2018/19 season and played a massive part in helping the club win the Shipowners Cup. The season after he was comfortably winning the leagues ‘golden gloves’ award before the season was declared null and void. Jamie Chappell: Jamie is a young goalkeeper who is a more than adequate deputy for Griff which was proven when he helped the club win the Durham Trophy last season. Defenders: John Bowes: Skips has been with the club since the very start and is closing in on 100 appearances. Tireless worker up and down the right flank. Cal Hodge: Cal came to the club after scoring against us in a cup final. Moved positions from winger to centre half and has never looked back. Comfortable on the ball and very quick. Josh Broom: Broomy is a local lad who has cemented his place at centre half. Good in the air and loves a forage forward. Ewan Simpson: Ewan joined us from Hebburn Town Reserves for the 2020/21 season and is one of the first names on the teamsheet. Comfortable in a number of positions and is a manager’s dream. 28

Joe Bell: Joe ‘over the wall’ Bell is another who can play in a number of defensive positions. Great club man and is certainly a character on and off the pitch. Myles Hubbard: Myles came into the squad last season and is a versatile player who can cover a number of positions. Kieran Campbell: Keo is a left back with a great engine and loves a tackle. Good addition to the Marras back line for this season. Midfielders: Barney Dobinson: Dobba is an all action midfielder who never gives less than 100%. Very experienced player who is no stranger to a yellow card. Neil Fannan: Fanno joined the club pre season and looks a good prospect playing centre mid or in the number 10 role. Martin Fowler: Fowler is a technically gifted player who will always try and get his foot on the ball and play. Liam Dunn: Product of our successful youth side Dunny is a tricky winger with an eye for goal. Liam Wright: Wrighty is a technically good footballer who on his day will prove to be a match winner. Jack Sayers: Jack is another of our younger lads. Quick as lightning and one we have high hopes for. Olly Hotchkiss: Olly signed from the club in early September from Bishop Auckland. midfielder, Olly has previously played for the likes of Ryhope CW, Durham City and Garforth Town, and he spent time at Leeds United and Mansfield Town in their youth set ups. Strikers: David Doughty: the Demon is our goalscorer. Unplayable on his day the lad has great feet but don’t let the baby face fool you he can be a right handful! Marc Moon: Podge is equally comfortable at centre half as he is centre forward. Strong in the air with a great temperament.

Jack Maskell: Jack is only 17 years old but got a great future ahead of him. The lad certainly knows where the back of the net is! Chris Tarn: Tarny has just returned to the club and it is if the veteran striker has never been away. Leads by example with a great work ethic and eye for goal. Danny Coates: Danny is a young lad who has just signed on for this season. He is a defender’s nightmare who will never give up on anything.
