We’ve had a few thrillers against Jarrow FC, none more so than our last game. Coming back from a 2-0 deficit at half time, we eventually triumphed 2-7. Off the field, the Clubhouse is progressing very well, hosting recent 50th & 40th birthday celebrations & Wayne has a full programme of band nights booked. We the restart of football, we’ll also be showing various SKY TV games on our 3 televisions. On pitch, we’ve played well but haven’t had the results some performances merited. T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) We are all looking forward to Jarrow game under the flood lights, they are a good footballing side and previous meetings has produced some entertaining games. Our start hasn’t been what we had hoped for result wise, however that’s football, we have had some decent performances but haven’t carried any luck. Only hard work and more consistency in our game will produce the results we know we are capable of. Over the coming weeks we hope to have injured players returning so we will have more strength in depth which will be a massive help to consistency.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Tow Law Town 2-2 Redcar Town Saturday 31st July 2021 A Brace by Brown not enough against new boys Redcar. After nearly a year without football the lawyers first game back was against newcomers Redcar town. Great work by the ground staff had produced an immaculate pitch to play on and both teams did just that. First 20 minutes belong to the lawyers who created numerous chances but without the finishing touch. Redcar had their moments and to be honest looked dangerous down the wings. On 36 mins Brownie bundled his way through challenges from the Redcar defenders and his shot on goal was half saved, luckily Brownie followed up the rebound to tap home giving the Lawyers a deserved halftime lead. 2nd half was end to end from the off and on chances alone looked a banker the Lawyers would extend there lead. But football some-times isn’t like that and on 62 minutes Redcar broke up the right hand side to cross and head the equaliser. This kicked the lawyers into action again and on 67 minutes Brownie produced An-other piece of magic when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area he rifled the shot into the bottom corner giving the Lawyers the edge 2-1. The lawyers had chances to extend the lead through Kenty and Moffat who had long-range efforts saved. Unfortunately with the lawyers trying to manage the game to the end they were caught again by the newcomers who equalised on 84 mins. The game finished 2-2 and to be honest for all their possession I don’t think the lawyers did enough to win it. But for the first game the signs are very encouraging. Man of the match for me was youngster Liam Goldsborough, got stronger and stronger as the game went on. (Match report by Craig Milner)

Chester-Le-Street Town 1-1 Tow Law Tuesday 3rd August 2021 Another goal by Michael Brown rescued a point for Tow Law, but it should have been more. The game kicked off to the backdrop of the evening sun setting over the main stand, but certainly changed later in the evening. With Tow Law kicking away from the new clubhouse, they cre-ated numerous chances to take an early lead. Brownie was through 1 on 1 with the keeper, had the ball in the net twice but was deemed offside andjust missed a contact at the back post from a Dan Kent cross. On 13 minutes, the sucker punch came. A long punt up the field was flicked on by ex-Lawyer Liam Dixon. Michael Hepplewhite cotrolled it and hit it into the net at the far post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Tow Law dominated possession, but couldn’t break down Chester-le-Street, who looked to play on the counter attack. The 2nd half was much the same pattern, Tow Law dominating possession but unable to make the breakthrough. That was until the 67th munute, the ball fell to Brownie on the 18 yard line & his shot flew into the keeper’s right to equalise. What had been a pleasant evening, then turned into a tropical monsoon. It absolutely clattered down, with standing water making conditions almost unplayable and the entire crowd seek-ing shelter. With no more goals, the spoils were shared, although Tow Law would be the most disappointed. (Match report by Steve Moralee)

Billingham Synthonia 3-2 Tow Law Saturday 7th August 2021 Defeat From the Jaws of Victory The Lawyers opened the scoring early doors when in the 2nd minute MASON HURWORTH from the left sent in a great strike which left Synners keeper Dan Dixon no chance as the ball found the top right corner, via the underside of the crossbar. Billingham responded with a Ben Henderson shot which was straight at Tow Law keeper Lewis Graham. Tow Law continued to have more threat as a couple of efforts were stopped by the Synthonia defence and Dixon. Synthonia did manage to find the net through Henderson saw the offside flag go up as the striker shot past Lewis Graham. A wild tackle by Curtis Kay saw Lewis Goldsborough needing treatment, with “The Synner” lucky to only see a yellow card. Ever dangerous with his pace, an early second half effort by Michael Brown went just past the far post and then they broke quickly moving the ball left to right where a cross went across goal without a red shirt able to convert to Synners’ relief. The Lawyers doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Michael Brown was brought down by Clark Kay. BARRIE SMITH stepped up to find the net from the penalty spot. Synthonia were back in the game after 79 minutes when they were awarded a penalty following a soft foul on David Onions. KURTIS HOWES netting the resulting spot-kick. Just two minutes later and Billingham were level, again from the penalty spot after the Referee granted the Synners handball appeals following Kay’s cross into the box and pointed to the spot. Howes again took the kick to fire Synners level despite Lewis Graham getting a hand to the ball. It was late drama as Synthonia took all three points with a third goal in the 87th minute with Onions robbing the ball off Jeff Smith on the edge of the box and firing the ball home.

Jarrow FC History Jarrow were formed in 1981 and played at Perth Green Community As-sociation, which is still Jarrow’s home ground today. We were previously known as Allison Arms Perth Green and played in the South Tyne League winning both league titles and cups. Jarrow then progressed to the Savacentre Washington League, after making significant ground improvements they changed their name to the town of Jarrow and entered the Wearside League. Our most notable success in the Wearside league was winning the Shipowners cup in the 2001/02 season and lifting the League title for the season 2016/17. During the 2016/17, and in preparation for our ambition of gaining promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division 2, significant investment was made to the ground. Floodlighting, new dug outs, new stand, major alterations to the changing rooms to name but a few. The ground inspection was passed on 31st March 2017, it was now down to the team on the pitch, and they didn’t disappoint, gaining promotion on 19th April, securing the league title on 22nd April, a fantastic achievement and a piece of history made for Jarrow FC as they play in the Northern League for the first time. Jarrow FC are a Community Chartered Standard Club and have a thriving junior set up consisting of all age groups from tots, under 7’s to under 18’s, providing playing opportunities for over 300 children.
