The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & a warm welcome back to Ironworks Road, Tow Law. Today we welcome our visitors, Redcar Town to both Ironworks Road & The EBAC Northern League The enforced break has certainly seen some activity here at Ironworks Road. Our last competitive game was way back in November 2020, when we hosted Billingham Synthonia. Since then, the Committee & Volunteers have worked hard to keep the Club on an even Keel, both on & off the pitch. We are grateful to each & everyone of them, along with our sponsors who have stood by us during these difficult times. As you enter the ground, there’s a brand new hospitality area, with seats & tables for our patrons to enjoy those famous warm evenings in Tow Law. Thanks to Wayne Anderson for his sterling work on this project. The canteen (sponsored by RIDLEY TYRES & EXHAUSTS) will be open for all our games, having been taken on by Megan & Lisa Jinks, give it a try. On behalf of the Club, I thank Jordan Anderson for all the help she gave us running the canteen during a very difficult time. She’s finding it hard to commit, but has offered to help with our match day bar when she can. Grant funding has been awarded to the Club, which is enabling us to in-stall LED floodlights. This will reduce our costs & the improved system will increase the LUX levels & your enjoyment of our product. After the game, why not join us in the Clubhouse for a drink, a bit of crack & take advantage of our ridiculously competitive prices.

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) It’s good to be back in league action after another difficult year for all of us. We welcome Redcar Town to the Northern League, the newly promoted club will be hoping to make a big impact I am sure. We look forward to seeing our supporters back on the terraces, having a pint at the bar and enjoying non-league football at its best. Pre-season recruitment has gone well with the main members of last seasons squad all resigning . We have strengthened the squad by adding strikers Dan Kent (ex Crook) and Aaron Hardy (ex Haltwhistle), midfielders Liam Goldsborough (ex Fleetwood) and Unpha Koroma (ex Gretna) to the squad which will give us strength in depth. We also have a very good blend of experience and youth in the squad which gives the team energy and knowledge which is vital. We were devastated to loose Jeb Atkinson with a broken leg in our first friendly, he underwent successful surgery and we can’t wait to get him back fit later this season. Training has gone well and fitness levels are good, we now just need more game time to progress our match sharpness. The team has looked solid in the 3 friendlies we managed to play, it was quite frustrating to not get a full programme of friendlies in, but this is just the situation most teams have had to endure. There is a good feel about the place as we approach the season the team is full of confidence and with a few more games under our belt we are sure we can produce some consistent performances.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.

the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.

Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.

The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Who’s the guy between the sticks? Lew Graham Date of Birth: 19th May 1991 Position: Goalkeeper Sponsored by: ARMOURPOST SECURITY DOORS & SHUTTERS, OUR LAST LINE OF DEFENCE

Senior Career Left Scottish Premier League Club Hibernian FC at 19yrs of age. Moved into the Ebac Northern League with Durham City. Over the next 9 yrs Lew progressed into one of the best young keepers in the business. From Durham he gradually made the step up playing for Sunderland RCA, Shildon, West Auckland, Willington AFC before reaching his pinochle here at Tow Law Town. Technically Lew is one of the best goalkeepers in the 2nd Division at present. Very Agile, Robust enough to deal with anything fired across into his area. Quick across the ground, fast reactions and great with the ball at his feet. His constant talking and giving advice and instructions to those in front of him is second to none. Lew’s record in penalty shootouts is unbelievable not just for his saves ( and believe me I’ve seen a lot over the years) but for his goal scoring. 5 pens taken, 5 goals scored, 100% record.

Redcar Town FC History Originally formed in the 94/95 season by Mr W G McGeough, Redcar Town started from humble beginnings and involved 2 teams at under 11. The following year this was reduced to one team compet ing at under 12. In 1997 Billy Prest joined the club and plans were laid to develop the club and expand the player coaching base of the club. This led to the forming of the most important decision has made to date , the Saturday Club. Posters were printed and distributed around the Town. To everyones surprise the first session held at West Redcar School attracted over 100 kids. This has proven to be the lifeblood of the Club continu-ing to produce a regular supply of talent to enable the Club to develop season after season. The then Council leader Brian Roberts moved our base to Borough Park on Redcar Lane. After many years of competing in the local Teesside Junior Football Alliance we had the honour of being voted the TJFA Club of the year in 2003 and more recently we were awarded the prestigious award of North Riding County FA Charter Standard Development Club of the year in 2009 & 2011. In May 2010 saw the opening of thelong awaited Club House at Mo Mowlam Memorial Park Trunk Road and the new home of Redcar Town Football Club. The club has evolved over the years from being a boys only junior club to a club that can now boast teams comprising of Boys, Girls, Mens, Ladies and a mixed disability teams from u7’s up to open age. The increase in the number of teams helped determine that the natural progression would be for the club to apply to the North Riding County FA to become a FA Charter Standard Community Club. This FA accreditation scheme is for grssroots clubs its goal is to raise the standards in grssroots football, support the development of clubs, recognising and rewarding them for their commitment. In March 2014 the club successfully met all the criteria and was awarded the status a fantastic achievement.

Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”

The pro-active committee was continuing to strive to improve the facilities and a grant successfully obtained from Sport England helped fund an extension to the existing building at Mo Mowlam and increase the size of the sports lounge which opened in August 2015. A year earlier the club started a Senior Men’s team with the dual object of providing the opportunity for our junior players to continue playing for the club after their junior football day were over. Secondly to get the Senior side into the Ebac Northern League and to that end and a donation from the SUEZ communities trust saw the installation of 8 15 meter floodlight pylons essential for Step 6 football. The club are continously striv-ing to improve the facilities for their members which this season will see the building of a new roof over the clubhouse which in turn will create a new function room.
