The Lawyer’s Brief Good afternoon & welcome to Ironworks Road. For today’s fixture, we welcome the officials, players & supporters from Washington FC. Our opponents have turned their form around of late & we can expect a stern test of our resolve to win. The league is still tight & the team appreciate all the support we can give them to get over the line. On Thursday, we said our goodbyes to Bernard Fairbairn at a moving funeral service in Darlington. Although in sad circumstances, it was nice to catch up with a few from the Vase final, namely Peter Quigley, Tony Heslop & Jarod Suddick.. Quigs is hoping to get the 98 Team up for a game before the season ends. Enjoy the game, the bar & canteen, as always are open. We’ve a band night tonight with the excellent KIMERA. Come along, have a great night & support your club. Steve Moralee, Club Secretary, Tow Law Town AFC

HOW TO DO CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR for short, is a simple life-saving technique given to someone in cardiac arrest. It aims to take over the job of the heart and lungs by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
CHECK FOR DANGER
Look around for risks to make sure you won’t be putting yourself in danger by helping.
CHECK FOR RESPONSE
Gently shake the person by the shoulders and ask if they can hear you.
SHOUT FOR HELP
If you don’t get a response and the person is not breathing or not breathing normally (do not put your face next to theirs when checking), they are in cardiac arrest and you should shout for someone to help you.
CALL 999
Call 999 and make sure an ambulance is on its way. You will be talked through what to do and given the location of a defibrillator if there is one nearby.
COVER MOUTH AND NOSE WITH CLOTH
If you think there is a risk of infection, place a cloth, towel or piece of clothing loosely over the patient’s mouth and nose.
START HANDS-ONLY CPR
Put your two hands together and interlock your fingers, place your hands in the centre of the chest and push hard and fast to the beat of Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark. Keep going until professional help arrives or the person starts to regain consciousness.
USE A DEFIBRILLATOR Please see our ‘How to use a defibrillator’ poster.

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) We welcome Washington today who are a really well organised young team, don’t be fooled by their league position as they have been really unlucky with some results. We still have a number of injured players, Ryan McKinnon (groin), Lew Milner (hamstring), Aaron Hardie (ankle) and Callum Williams (ankle). It was good to see Matty Moffat back on the pitch after his long absence and he showed he hasn’t lost his goal touch. We now enter a hard period of games playing 2 games a week which tests your fitness and squad strength, we are all looking forward to it as its been 3 years since we have actually finished a season. The weather is looking good so lets hope our supporters enjoy the game.

“Honestly cannot recommend enough already and we haven’t even seen our photos yet! We went this morning with our one year old who decided to skip his nap and was very grumpy and not very cooperative.... Ritchie was GREAT with him and even offered to finish our photos another day when little one was in a better mood, absolutely brilliant experience so far!!” Sophie Gwillym, visited the studio in April 2021

Tow Law Town 2-2 Newcastle University Saturday 26th February 2022 Ebac Northern League Division 2 Lawyers did enough but still only a point. For the first 45 mins today this was probably the worst I’ve seen from the lawyers this season. We couldn’t put 3 passes together, no flow to the play, no passion, no nothing. They looked like a team that hadn’t played together for weeks, never mind a team looking for a playoff position. On yet another windy bitter cold day on the hill I’ve never be so glad to get a half time cup of tea. Whatever was said at the interval though made a huge difference, the lawyers had a bit about them second half. The movement was better, the passing was better, they looked like a football team. On the front foot and creating chances it wasn’t long before the pressure paid off. A free kick 40yrds out was floated into the danger area, capt Ryan McKinnon rose and glanced a beautiful header over the advancing keeper. It was no more than the lawyers deserved as they were the better team second half. In total control the lawyers then conceded the most bizarre own goal I think I’ve ever seen. Lawyers keeper took a goal kick as normal, with the ball heading over the half way line midfielder Archie Gardiner swung a leg to help it on its way. Unfortunately for Archie (I can only presume hitting his front of the boot) it flew straight back into his own goal giving Tom Orton in goal no chance 1-1. The Lawyers response was instant, two minutes after the own goal Tommy McAloon broke clear running across the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, he found the corner of the net with a great finish 2-1. That goal seemed to be enough to claim all 3 points, Newcastle were never the threat second half. A couple of breakaway attacks but nothing to trouble the Tow Law keeper or the back four. With 90 mins on the clock up stepped the referee to take centre stage to give (25 yards away) the most bizarre penalty decision yet. The assistant who had a clear view (10yrds away) said no penalty, yet when consulted by the referee changed his mind. A shocked Ironworks watched in disbelief as Newcastle University equalised with the last kick of the match. So the points were shared to the amazement of everyone here today, other than the ref of course. Man of the Match Midfielder Liam Goldsborough, the only bright spark 1st half and never stopped 2nd half. 12

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of
Famous ex-players include Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City, Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980 & Steve Howard of Leicester City.

Washington FC History During the early part of the 20th Century there were several attempts to establish Washington Football Club in the local community with mixed success. Many good players were discovered though, some progressing to the professional ranks. Our version of Washington Football Club was established in 1947 by the miners of Washington ‘F’ Pit. All that now remains of the Colliery is the Pit Wheelhouse (which is a museum), but the Foot-ball Club goes on, providing sporting opportunities for players of all ages. It’s fair to say that the club has had contrasting fortunes over the years with many highs and lows. The following briefly out-lines key moments in the progress of the Club Climbing through the Leagues After some initial friendly games, the club joined the Gateshead and District League in 1947 under the banner of Washington Mechanics. After two seasons, they were elected to the Washington Amateur League. Throughout the 1950s the club enjoyed much success and continued to develop. Looking to progress, they moved on to the Northern Alliance League in 1964. That move only lasted one season, as the club was successful in their application to the Wearside League, joining under the new name of Washington Football Club. A long association with the Wearside League lasted until 1988. In Season 1988/89 the club finally achieved a long-held ambition to join the Northern League. Around the Grounds The early games were played on a pitch in Spout Lane, Washington, which was little more than a village green at the time. Upon entry to the Wearside League, the club moved to Usworth Park, a well-maintained Colliery Welfare ground with an excellent playing surface. In 1975, the continued development of Washington New Town saw the Colliery Welfare ground make way for a new trunk road. The club was forced to move to Glebe Park, to share council facilities with several other teams. After much lobbying, the club finally leased a ground from the New Towns Commission in 1979, which was brought up to Wearside League standard for the start of the 1980/81 season. The new ground, Albany Park, was subsequently purchased by the club and developed with the addition of a licensed clubhouse and stands. In February 1991, a fire gutted the clubhouse, and for two years the club played home games at Ryhope C.A. The club returned to Albany Park for the 1992/93 season and continued to improve the facilities with the addition of floodlights and seating areas. In 2003, the Limited Company, which owned Albany Park and ran the club, went into liquidation. The ground was then purchased by local businessman Russell Foster, who later sold it on to Cameron’s Brewery. The club continued to play at Albany Park until the end of the 2009/2010 season but deteriorating facilities and doubts about the long-term future of the ground, forced the club to look for a new home. An approach was made to the nearby Nissan Sports & Leisure 20

Complex and they have played there since the start of the 2010/2011 season. We have also played at New Ferens park in recent seasons and we currently reside in Ford Quarry Football Hub, which is a fantastic purpose built modern facility. Our aim as a club is of course to get back into Washington and bring with it a Ground fit for the Northern League. This will again take a lot of hard work, we are awaiting final sign off before starting on our new adventure back in Washington Joining Forces - Washington FC and AFC The difficult 2016/17 season took its toll on the small number of volunteers who ran the Club, culminating in a decision to inform the Ebac Northern League, before the March deadline, that the Club would withdraw its membership for the 2017/18 season. The drastic action gave the club time to consider options. Subsequently, a concerted appeal was made in the local press/ social media etc., to find help to take over/assist with the administration of the Club. The call for help was answered by Washington AFC. They are a local Community Junior Club, where “Football is for All”. They are a well-run organisation with a wealth of administrative experience (currently running 48 teams). They provide training for girls and boys in age groups ranging from Under 7s to Under 18s as well as two women’s open age teams. And for the 2019-20 season we will again have a Reserve team participating in the Wearside Development League and we will also have a Sunday morning team under the FC banner. Local volunteers have also stepped up. The Washington AFC Committee also now look after FC, with the addition of Paul Nevitt as Chairman. We also again have the services of Match Day Secretary, Bryan Tomlinson. Previous Secretary & Chairman, Derek Armstrong, Club President, Tom Boylen are still there showing their support and advising in any way they can.
