The Lawyer’s Brief Today once again we welcome our friends & local rivals to Ironworks Road. This time it is Willington for the EBAC Northern League fixture. PLEASE COMPLY WITH THE COVID-19 GUIDELINES The season has started coming together, Michael, Warren & the squad know this form must continue. A rain soaked trip to Jarrow last Saturday, followed by an action packed home win against Crook Town on Wednesday has seen a 6 point return, 11 goals for & 5 against. We currently sit just off the pace in 6th place. Its early days yet, but the great Olympian distance runners, Ovett, Coe & Cram never hit the front too soon. We are getting a good blend of experience & youth in the squad. The current Pandemic situation has caused many problems over the last month, not least with the Club finances. You will see that there are some new banners on the car park fence. The Club is very grateful to all our sponsors & advertisers for their support pitchside, programme & many other ways. Like most Clubs, we need your support. If you know any potential sponsors or can help in any way, don’t hesitate to come forward. Another way to support is via our new letterdraw. Simply down-load Clubsuppoter.app & join using the code Lawyers. For as little as £1/week you can help us & win cash prizes for yourself. You can be assured that your Management Committee are all working hard to strengthen the Club, both on & off the pitch. Enjoy the game today & STAY SAFE, STAY HEALTHY.

T.A.T. (Technical Area Talk) In our second derby game of the week we entertain Willington who are quite a strong organised team and very dangerous on the counter attack, we will have to be at our best today as if last season is anything to go by it will be a tight game. This is a game where local rivalry comes into play and the supporters from both sides will be quite vocal. Team wise we are still without 5 key players through injury, which we have had to contend with for most of the season. It has allowed some of our younger players to develop which is a positive and will stand them in good stead for the season. We are now going into the winter months so heavy pitches are on their way so we are looking forward to getting our squad back to full strength. The team is now starting to develop and grow in confidence on the back of a few extremely good performances. We now need to maintain this level which requires hard work of all the squad and desire to progress.

Lawyers Club History The “Lawyers” were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25. In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay “Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January”.
the ground is down to the regular work which has been done since 1921 by many hardworking bands of voluntary labour. A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.
Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.
During 2004, Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season he was replaced by Sandra Gordon, the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League.
The Lawyers first ground was in Church Lane, but the present Ironworks Road ground was built by volunteers during the miners’ strike of 1892/93. Ironically it was rebuilt during another miners strike in 1921. Today the much-improved state of

Tow Law Town 4-3 Crook Town Tuesday 6th October 2020 They say a local derby match in football is a thing of the past. Well I’m sorry but 150 people at the Ironworks on Tuesday will disagree. This game had everything 7 goals, 2 red cards, man in the sin bin and world-class saves. Not to mention passion, commitment and respect from both teams. The game started at 100 mph and it was the Lawyers who got off to a tremendous start when Michael Brown was brought down in the box and the referee had no hesitation but to give a penalty. Barrie Smith stepped up and converted to make it 1-0 after only 1 min. The lawyers were really up for this game and were all over Crook like a rash. They went 2-0 after 12 minutes when a great cross from the left was met by a bullet header from Tom McAloon giving the keeper no chance. It was wave after wave of attacks from the Lawyers and on 23 minutes more great work from the busy McAloon down the right hand side put a great cross in for Michael Brown to slide in and make it 3-0. Unfortunately the Lawyers had no time to celebrate that goal, as Crook went straight up the other end and pulled a goal back. The remainder of the first half was end to end with the Lawyers shading it on chances. Teams went in at half time for a well-deserved rest and the Lawyers leading 3-1. There was always going to be a reaction from Crook second half, (they are not top the league for nothing) and they came out flying. The Lawyers had to be strong, tackles were flying in from both teams and the ref was struggling to control the game. The Lawyers paid the price for this on 58 mins when central midfielder Jeff Smith was sent off for a rash challenge. In my book a yellow card was sufficient, but unfortunately with the atmosphere and the away fans baying for blood the ref showed a straight red. Down to 10 men the Lawyers hat to dig deep and defend for their lives. With Crook now on the front foot pushing forward, there was always going to be the chance of a break away. The Lawyers got that chance on 60 minutes when they broke the full length of the field and a clumsy challenge rewarded them there 2nd penalty of the night. Baz Smith made no mistake and put the Lawyers 4-1 up. Crook continued to pepper the Lawyers goal with everything they had. The bad news for Crook was we have one of the best Keepers in the league in Lew Graham. For the next 20 mins he showed why, pulling some stunning saves off to keep the 18
Tow Law Town AFC “The Lawyers”
score 4-1. One save in particular low down to his right was out of this world (take a bow Lew Graham). The Lawyers continued to play on the break and caught Crook out again with some slick play. On 70 mins this resulted in the last defender pulling Mason Hurworth down, ref went red and it was 10 v 10. Crook player’s argued the referee’s decision and had a player sin binned for it 10 v 9 wow! What next? Into the last 8 mins the Lawyers were beginning to tire, no surprise considering what they put into the game. Crook pressure paid off in the end and scored on 82 & 90 minutes to make the final score 4-3 to the Lawyers. So the first bragging rights go to Tow Law, but boy did they have to work for it. Man of the Match for me tonight - impossible to single any one player out, as every player in a white shirt put a shift in. Well done Guys!

In 1925-26 they won the league again, and in 1927-28 they reached the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 2–1 to Cockfield in a replay. In 1945-46 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time but lost to Bishop Auckland. The following season they got to the FA Cup first round but lost 3-0 to Rochdale. They reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1973-74, losing to Blackburn Rovers after a replay. After finishing bottom of the Northern League Division One in 1982-83, Willington were relegated to Division Two. The club struggled in the second tier, finishing bottom of the league in 1983-84 and 1991-92, and only finishing in the top ten five times in twenty-two seasons. After finishing bottom again in 2005-06 they were relegated to the Wearside League. They continued to struggle, finishing second from bottom in their first two seasons in the league, and then bottom in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2013 Willington AFC were promoted back to Northern League Division Two. In 2018/19 Willington AFC finished eighth tallying 56 points and enjoyed good cup runs in both the Brooks Mileson Memorial Trophy and Ernest Armstrong Cup. When the 2019-20 season was abandoned, the club stood in twelfth place with 36 points from 27 games and had reached the quarter final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup before being knocked out. The club has had a number of players who went on to play in the football league, including Joe Banks-Spurs, George Tweedy-Grimsby Town, Billy Ashurst-Notts County, Ray Pointer-Burnley, Andy Graver-Lincoln City. Famous Managers include Malcolm Allison, Alan Durban, Eddie Kyle, Alan Murray, Alan Shoulder and Stan Cummins. The current manager is Ibby Hassan who is assisted by Jarrod Suddick. 22
