SPECIAL FEATURE – Fall Fun for Seniors

fun for seniorsL FAL

BY AMANDA HAGEDORN

With a cornucopia of activities, sights and flavors, the fall season has something for everyone, and that’s certainly true for St. Louis seniors. Whether you’re looking for a family outing, a solitary stroll or a feast with friends, the area has plenty for you to enjoy this season.

autumn stroll

Around mid-October, fall colors are on full display in our local parks. The splendid trees frame the boathouse at Carondelet Park, the Pagoda across from the MUNY at Forest Park and the Gateway Arch grounds.

For a more unique view of the fall landscape, check out Chloë Bass’s Wayfinding installation, which consists of thirty signs throughout the Pulitzer Arts Foundation’s outdoor spaces. The exhibit ends Oct. 31.

To experience the fall’s fauna as well as its flora, take out your binoculars with the St. Louis Audubon Society. They host beginner bird walks and field trips for all ages and levels of experience in Forest Park and other nearby parks and trails.

family time

Watching the grandkids for a weekend? The season hosts plenty of events that are fun for all ages. On the weekends of October, you and your family can decorate pumpkins, find your way through the corn maze and snack on kettle corn by the Clydesdales at Grant’s Farm’s Fall Fest. Usual attractions such as the animal exhibits and Beer Garden also will be open.

Des Peres Park also offers an annual event that your family will want to add to their fall traditions. At the Pumpkin Glow, your family can show off their Jack-O-Lantern skills by floating them on the Des Peres Pond. Bring your own picnic basket and s’mores supplies to roast over the campfire while watching the pumpkins light up the water.

sustainable crafts

Those who like to get a headstart on holiday gifts can discover a sustainable way to craft their own presents. Perennial is a nonprofit workshop that offers classes on transforming discarded materials into beautiful objects. Perennial is hosting several crafting classes, including a few fall-themed ones, to help you find creative solutions to reduce waste.

eureka events

Eureka is Missouri’s ultimate destination for fall. Throughout the month of October, the town is taken over by scarecrows as businesses compete to put their inventive spin on this classic seasonal decoration. After deciding which scarecrow you’ll vote for, check out the corn maze, pumpkin patch and other fall attractions at Brookdale Farms.

fall flavors

From autumn crops to Oktoberfest hops, you can taste from the season’s abundant harvest throughout October. Kick off the month at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Best of Missouri Market to check out more than 120 food producers and artisans. Enjoy a selection of 100 beers at the St. Louis Science Center’s St. Louis Beer Fest on Oct. 16. Take a short road trip to Kimmswick, Missouri to spend the last weekend of the month at the Apple Butter Festival. &
