Editor’s Lett

Welcome to The August Crier! July has been certainly a hot hot month! After the long cold winter it's been a much needed boost to our vitamin 'D' levels!!! However, let's spare a thought for our poor pets who have suffered the heat (see tips on overheated pets inside) but it's been lovely to see the dogs paddling around in the river to cool off!! I was fortunate enough to slip across to the Isle of Wight during July. It was stunning with the beautiful blue seas and we were lucky enough to stay right by the beach so the grandchildren had a lovely time collecting shells and even the odd crab or two. If you've not yet managed to have a break, Barnes Coaches have some brilliant ideas for days out or there are alternative attractions on page 58 as well as local events on the Diary Page (62). We hope you like the fresh new look that Sam, our new Designer is bringing to the magazine - watch this space for further changes and we would love to hear your thoughts!!

Swindon Museum and Art Gallery

We at Chippenham Men’s Shed are looking for your support in helping us find a place for our members to meet on a regular basis.

Swindon Museum and Art Gallery has successfully won a tender to deliver a Historic England project examining the sustainability of archaeological archives in museum stores.

What we require is somewhere secure with access for the disabled and a social meeting area or space to create one large enough for several workbenches where our members can repair, make things and meet on a regular basis. We also need toilet facilities We have limited funds, so we are looking for a low rental or rent-free period for at least year.

We want to make Chippenham Men’s Shed a place to pursue practical interests, such as woodworking, metalworking and learning computer skills, a place to share skills and knowledge a place for social connections and friendship building a place to relax and have a laugh. We know a life after employment can be difficult for men and women who often feel they’ve lost their sense of purpose and place in the world, this can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation which can be detrimental to their health and wellbeing. However, acknowledging that age isn’t the only factor in loneliness and isolation, Chippenham Men’s Shed is not just for older people. We encourage younger members, female members and people with disabilities to participate in our activities. If you have any questions, please contact us at: theguys@chippenhammensshed.com Or visit our website: http://chippenhammensshed.000webhostapp.com and @chippenhammensshed on Facebook

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

The £20,000 will be used to provide a comprehensive survey of the charges required by museums for the transfer of developer funded archaeological archives, exploring how these charges have been set and how the income is used by museums. Archaeological archives consist of records and finds made during an archaeological project. The documentary archive includes written records, drawings, photographs and digital data and the material archive includes artefacts such as pottery and metalwork, or environmental remains such as animal bone. These archives are deposited with an appropriate museum, and made accessible for further research. Currently museums independently decide their own fees and the project seeks to understand the different costs that museums take into account when setting these. One aim is to feed into a wider conversation about the longterm sustainability of archaeological archives in England. The tender was awarded to Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, due to the expertise of the staff team and gives them the opportunity to shape the conversation around this issue.

... WE MEET This is a first in a series of regular interviews with interesting people who live or have a strong connection with North Wiltshire. This is a way to acknowledge and honour the amazing stories on our doorstep. This month we meet Stephanie Millward MBE who two years ago this month (August) became one of the success stories of TeamGB in the Paralympics at Rio 2016. It can be difficult to remember – in our modern world – this sporting event was the most talkedabout on social media platform Twitter during that year. It eclipsed Euro 2016 and the election of Donald Trump to the American presidency. Wiltshire can be proud of its elite athletes who scooped medals and made the Games among the most successful in history. Many, including Stephanie, were rewarded in the New Year’s Honours List.

her husband Adrian, has published her book Paying The Price which shares her journey to get to Rio. She has also had some big challenges to overcome since that amazing sporting event. She dreams now of getting to Tokyo 2020 however her central funding has been withdrawn – and despite a legal challenge, she has been unsuccessful in getting that funding re-instated.

e i n a h StepWARD

MILL

For the Olympics we have to go back to 1908 to better our medal haul and the Paralympics was the most successful ever. Some highlights included: *the team won 147 medals, 27 more than London with 64 gold, 39 silver and 44 bronze. *the medals were designed with a sound for the first time – which made them a great talking point. *The top winning sports were swimming; athletics; cycling; equestrian and wheelchair tennis. Stephanie Millward, now 36, was one of those Paralympic heroes and she won gold in the S8 class in the 100m backstroke and in the 34-point 4x100m medley relay team. An amazing achievement for a woman who was diagnosed with MS at 18 years old and suffers from chronic pain. She has also gone blind for periods of time over the years since diagnosis. “I first dreamed of winning a gold medal at the Olympics when I was eight years old and won a gold in the Junior Olympics. It was then I realised I wanted to win gold at an Olympics and, it’s taken a long time but I finally got there. I won my gold by four seconds and it was the perfect finish.” Since that time Stephanie, who lives in Box with

MBE

Has that stopped her? Not a chance. “I’m working very hard to try to raise the funds myself and to keep myself going through my own efforts. I want to compete in Tokyo if I can so I’m doing lots of talks in return for donations, I’m selling my book and also looking for sponsors who will help me to get there,” she said. Her first book Paying The Price tells the story of getting to Rio – her second book will tell the next stage of her story after the 2016 Games. Stephanie is also training hard at the University of Bath, paying for her training and pool time herself. She is also self-funding the cost of travelling to competitive events while her husband – who works for the social housing company GreenSquare – supports her. A key moment comes along this month (July 24) when she will compete in the 400m freestyle at a national event in Sheffield and this will determine if she is fast enough to represent GB up to 2020. Stephanie said: “My main aim is always to inspire people and to encourage people to be happy and to smile more. Everyone faces challenges and we need to help and support each other as much as we can.”

To keep carrots fresh and stop them from going soft Carrots can go really ‘floppy’ within days of picking. To avoid this and keep them fresh, wrap them in damp kitchen roll, put in plastic container and refridgerate. The carrots will stay lovely and fresh for well over a week.

CURRY FAVOUR

by colin taylor

A brief hist

I’d always thought of curry as a recent introduction to Britain but bizarrely it all began with the Dutch in the 16th Century. They were world-leaders in the trading of pepper and because they had a monopoly they were able to sell it at an extortionate price.

So Elizabeth I granted a Royal Charter to a small group of merchants allowing them to create a trading company which became known as the East India Company. Its initial purpose was to secure a better price for pepper than could be obtained from the Dutch. Actually the British had never been keen on trading with India, which was viewed rather arrogantly as simply a handy stopping-off port and a place to exchange goods like cotton and linen. But the Dutch made life very difficult for other traders so private armies, dedicated to the protection of European traders, were set up all along the coast of India. At the time India was ruled by Emperors and Mughals and there was a lot of in-fighting. The Europeans took full advantage of 20 The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

this and seized whole regions and territories for their own purposes. Eventually the Mughals yielded to the British and the East India Company profited, becoming extremely powerful and influential. The reign of the British Raj was a decadent period and this was expressed in their food. Indian chefs were trained to cater for a western palate and there was a tremendous cross-over of cultures which resulted in a fusion-style cuisine. When the British returned to their home country they still craved the spicy Eastern flavours they’d left behind. It’s unsurprising therefore that the first published recipe for curry appeared in a 1747 book, The Art of Cookery. Initially it included just coriander seeds and pepper. Subsequent editions added ginger and turmeric. Even Mrs. Beeton included a curry recipe, which used all manner of spices, in her Book of Household Management. The first ‘curry house’ in Britain was opened by Dean Mahomet, who came from an eastern Indian middle class family.

He chose London because of its cosmopolitan atmosphere, and The Hindostanee Coffee House opened on George Street at the turn of the 19th century. Curry houses became extremely popular but fell into decline during the two World Wars when people were preoccupied with survival and rationing. The fall of Hitler and Indian independence in 1947 led to more people from the sub-continent relocating to the UK and once again there was a surge in popularity for spicy cuisine. Curry is now firmly embedded into British culture. When you next bite into a poppadom give a thought for the history of the curry and impress your fellow diners with your knowledge.

O T T A E d FUooIDE B oost Your Mood! G THE

By Louise Addison

We all feel a bit low from time to time. Try modifying your diet.

Go Mediterranean: Scientists have found that those who followed a classic Mediterranean diet were 30 per cent less likely to develop depression. It is thought that the combination of omega 3 fatty acids together with natural unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants from olive oil and nuts, flavonoids and other phytochemicals from fruit and other plant foods and large amounts of natural folates and other B vitamins in the overall Mediterranean dietary pattern may help to protect against depression. Eat selenium: Studies have linked low mood with low levels of the mineral selenium. Eating nuts is the best way to increase your intake. Brazil nuts are the most concentrated selenium source. Just three nuts contain the recommended daily intake of selenium for a woman. Watch your blood sugar: The glycaemic index (GI) is a numerical system that indicates how quickly carbohydrates will make your blood sugar levels rise. Fluctuations in blood sugar lead to swings in mood and energy. Choose foods that are slow to digest, and which offer a gradual, sustained energy release.

Crystal clear ice Ever wondered how to get crystal clear Ice cubes? If you boil the water before you freeze ice cubes, they will be crystal clear when they come out of the freezer.

Boost your serotonin: Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which is converted in our bodies into the neurotransmitter serotonin. Low serotonin levels are often associated with depression. Proteins such as lean chicken, tuna, salmon and beans are tryptophan-rich and have been proven to boost the mood. Get plenty of fish: Research suggests that omega 3, the essential fatty acids found in fish oils, can improve your mood. Regular consumption of oily fish (salmon, tuna and mackeral) has been associated with better moods and a higher self-reported mental health, even after adjustment for factors such as income, age and other eating patterns. Remember that depression is not low mood. It is a serious mental health condition. If you think you are suffering from depression please consult your GP.

Dyrham Ancient deer park, 17th-century house and garden There’s plenty to see at Dyrham Park this summer with activities for families on each day and ongoing events to keep all ages happy. In the summer holidays there are different activities for children running each day from wild cooking to den building to kite making or dry stone walling. You can even try your hand at some tractor cleaning. Every Tuesday and Thursday we’ll have guided discovery trails where young adventurers can hunt for bugs, look out for deer and explore the wild side of the parkland. We’ve also got wild woodland sessions on certain Wednesdays in the holidays. Youngsters will get to identify insects and plants, build dens, cook on an open fire, take part in games and create some wild art. These sessions, led by our team of expert ranger guides, should be booked in advance. For a bit of unstructured fun there’s always space to run down rolling hills or while away some time in our play areas. Old Lodge is a popular spot for the under 10s with rustic play equipment, plenty of ride-on diggers, a full size tractor to climb on, picnic tables and an allotment to explore. Older children may prefer to try their hand at balance beams and stepping stones or build a

den at Hollow Ways, an area created using natural resources in the woods. To get there you could try to spot eight wooden sculptures - including an eagle, a parrot and a snake –on the journey of discovery family trail which takes you down from reception. The National Trust property, situated off the A46 near Bath, is nestled in a 270-acre ancient parkland filled with magnificent trees and breathtaking views reaching right over to the Welsh hills. The parkland is home to a herd of around 200 wild fallow deer which roam freely. June was fawning season so you may catch sight of some young deer as you explore the parkland. Inside the baroque-style house visitors can get a flavour of 17th-century life with a fine collection of Dutch ceramics and art and there are tours of the conservation studio midweek. New this season are tea tasting sessions so you can sample what tea would have been like more than 300 years ago. Outside you can come and see the formality of 17th century style planting in borders which contrasts with the pool gardens, informal orchards and rich wildflower meadows. Garden and park tours are running every day led by specialist volunteer guides or if you prefer to explore independently there are lots of paths and self-led trails.

Shakespeare’s The Tempest is being performed on August 3 and 4 in the grounds by an all male cast with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance. Book through the website. Don’t forget to seek out Golden Ears, one of the hares from the Cotswold Hare Trail who’s painted gold and decorated with beautiful wildflowers and butterflies, like the ones in Dyrham’s meadows. He’s at Dyrham until September. If all this leaves you ready for a cup of tea or an ice cream, why not stop at Dyrham’s new tea garden, a pretty outdoor area and a sun trap with plenty of new umbrellas for those preferring a bit of shade. General Manager Tom Boden said: “There’s always something different to see at Dyrham so come along and try something new.”

When a customer goes out of business owing you money. Sadly, if you are an unsecured creditor (a secured creditor has preferential rights) you may only recover a few pennies in the pound, and usually nothing. Here are some, common sense precautions you can take in future:  Have clear credit control procedures and follow them consistently;  Check credit references before offering credit;  Do not extend credit limits without good reason;  Monitor customer accounts regularly. If a payment period lengthens, make sure you act quickly, discuss the matter with the customer and: suggest they take smaller more frequent deliveries; maybe restrict payment periods to, say, 20 days and extend to 30 days when you are confident they will pay; ask for confirmation that both the goods and invoice have been received to avoid the ‘sorry I lost the invoice’ scenario.

The Town was granted Royal patronage in March 2011 by The Queen in reccognition of the constant homage the townsfolk paid to the seemingly endless corteges of flag draped and flower strewn hearses that slowly passed down its high street bringing home the soldiers who had given their lives in far flung war zones. Men, women and even children lined the streets in silent prayer. A sad and moving sight over the years.

At the centre of the wide High Street stands an imposing reminder of the towns past. Supported on 15 stone columns – the Town Hall, a small structure built in the early 18th century. Given its modern name of Wootton Bassett in the 13th century by the Bassett family, who built a great fortified house in the south west of the village, now sadly only the gatehouse remains. continued...

With a long and fascinating history dating back before even the Domesday Book, the town is full of olde worlde charm, with many buildings of historical interest.

SMOKES SIGNAL to SMARTS PHONE

Have you ever wondered what life was like before smartphones? One of the oldest forms of long distance communication is smoke signals, used in both Ancient China and by Native Americans to warn of enemy attacks. Then there were carrier or homing pigeons, which are birds that have been bred to find their way home over immensely long distances. A short message was written on a small piece of paper which was inserted into a small metal canister and attached to the leg of a pigeon. They were mainly used by the military and were a surprisingly accurate and effective way of communicating during battle. In 1837, two sets of inventors simultaneously developed an electrical telegraph: Wheatstone and Cooke in England, and Samuel Morse in the United States. Morse and an assistant developed a new signalling alphabet using dots and dashes that became the standard for telegraph communication. By 1861, this Morse telegraph system connected the West and East coasts of America, and put the Pony Express (a mail-delivery service which had connected communities across the vastness of the United States) out of business. As technology improved, the telegraph became an audio transponder, where messages were translated based on the interval between two clicks.

Alexander Graham Bell is commonly credited as the inventor of the telephone, though in fact many individuals contributed to the devices we use today but it was Bell who filed the patent in 1876 for an "apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically" The earliest text-based machine was the fax machine. It’s been around since the 1880s, though it only achieved commercial success in 1966, when Xerox introduced the Magnafax Telecopier. This behemoth weighed over 20Kg and sent digital versions of documents through phone lines via a series of dial tones. The fax machine became popular with business and in newsrooms because it allowed people to send documents across the world in a matter of minutes, replacing courier mail services and telegrams. In 1973, Motorola produced the first ‘mobile’ phone, which weighed over 2Kg! Today, we’ve come a long way from those oversized devices and have access to phones that weigh around the same as a bar of chocolate, and slip easily into our pockets. With the advent of the Internet came 'Instant Messaging'. ICQ was the first stand-alone instant messenger. This was the first centralized service which allowed individual user profiles. It was the grandfather of all other instant messaging services. Today we use our mobiles for much more than talking. On average we spend just 6 minutes per day talking on the phone, but more than 26 minutes texting! Originally, we had to type out every letter according to the numerical keypad on our mobile devices. Now we have full QWERTY touch screen keyboards with predictive text and autocorrect capabilities that make it easier than ever to communicate. How amazing is that?

FAITH MATTERS

Laughing at

A

Another’s Downfall

s I write this article we are in the middle of the FIFA World Cup. I am not much a football fan really, but I have enjoyed watching a number of the matches, not least those of England. It’s been interesting to watch teams of whom one had high expectations struggle or even fail to get through the group stages. “Football is a simple game: 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end Germany always win.” While that famous quote by Gary Lineker is not always accurate there is no doubt that when it comes to a World Cup, Germany are invariably amongst the top challengers. The four-time winners had never finished outside of the top seven since their last first-round exit back in 1938, but then this year they fell in Group F to break 80 years of almost continuous success. Perhaps many of us in the UK were happy when Germany failed to get through the group stages, for they have done so well in the past in denying us opportunities to progress in major football tournaments. The Germans even have a word for it: schadenfreude, the feeling of joy caused by the suffering or humiliation of another person; and it was in plentiful supply once the final whistle blew on their disastrous World Cup campaign. The jokes about the German team on social media were endless. The Sun newspaper ran with “Schadenfreude: noun (from the German): Pleasure derived from another person’s misfortune,” Another headline summed it up: “Germany’s World Cup Loss, Europe’s Schadenfreude”. We can so often be quick to delight in another’s misfortune. We frequently build people up only to gain pleasure in their downfall. I was very moved after the penalty shoot out of the England game against Colombia. Amid England’s celebrations after the shootout, manager Gareth Southgate was comforting a Colombian player who had missed his

34

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

penalty. Southgate knows only too well what that feels like. In the Euro 1996 tournament, England’s semi-final against Germany went to penalties. Southgate’s saved penalty gave Germany the chance to go through to the final if they scored their next penalty, which they did. The England manager at the time, Terry Venables, hugged a devastated Southgate. Images of Southgate being consoled 22 years ago and being the consoler after the Colombia game emerged on social media, prompting praise for Southgate’s compassion towards Colombia’s Mateus Uribe, who missed his spot-kick. Maybe something of the support and kindness from Venables all those years ago has had an impact on Southgate to this day. We often use the phrase ‘How the mighty have fallen’, meaning they once had some status or power but have fallen on hard times or into some sort of disgrace. The phrase comes from the Bible, it wasn’t a statement to mock but a statement of lament. St Paul, in one of his letters wrote, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Rom 12:15). We should not wish upon anybody what we decline, exclude, or shun for ourselves. Like the England manager, Gareth Southgate, who in his moment of triumph, through the pain of his past was able to empathise, reach out and embrace the Colombian team in their saddest moment, we too need to examine ourselves and learn to ‘rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn’ for God’s sake. In doing so we may never know the positive and lasting impact it might have on others and ourselves. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

Cricklade

FlowerShow

For the first time in seven years St Sampson’s Church in Cricklade was a blaze of colour with the return of the Flower Festival held inside the church during the weekend of 13th - 15th July. Money raised from the event will go towards the church roof fund. There was a collection inside the church of over 20 floral displays - everything from ‘loaves and fishes’ to a scene of Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. Pictured with the floral displays are organisers, Sue Impey and Gloria Light. Also pictured beside her display inside the church was Ruth Tolley. The highlight to the event was on Saturday 14th July with Jane Templeton playing the organ together with music provided by the Danby family.”

STEPS TO A

Healthier Heart By Louise Addison

Cardiovascular disease causes 26% of all deaths in the UK; that's over 150,000 deaths each year – an average of 420 people each day or one death every three minutes. Those are the scary statistics but what can you do to improve the health of your heart? Below are the top tips according to leading cardiologists.

number. Eat about 25g of raw, fresh, unsalted nuts per day – especially walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. Nuts are packed with omega 3 oils, raise levels of HDL good cholesterol, decrease inflammation and have a good effect on the heart. Healthy fats such as olive or rapeseed oil have a positive effect too, and the really good news is that an alcoholic drink per day also works in your favour! Eat a good quality tomato pasta sauce! Simple tomato pasta sauce is loaded with potassium which aids lowering of blood pressure. Floss! – Most people don’t know that your oral health has an effect on arterial health so make sure those pearly whites stay clean and flossed.

Walk 30 minutes every day, no matter what! – A half hour walk every day decreases an individual’s chances of a heart attack by 30%. If you think you’ll skip days find a walking buddy and hold each other accountable. Find out your blood pressure and take steps to bring it down – Your blood pressure may be a more important factor than your cholesterol! If the doctor prescribes medication take it, but you can also take steps to lower it yourself and maybe reduce the need for medication. The best ways are to exercise and lose some belly fat. Individuals with high levels of fat in the abdominal cavity (belly fat) and around their abdominal organs are more likely to develop high blood pressure because this fat interferes with the function of the kidneys, which regulate the blood pressure. Know what your HDL number is and then do what you can to raise it to 1.3 mmol/l - In women especially it seems that a higher HDL (good cholesterol) number is more important than a low LDL (bad cholesterol) 42

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

Limit saturated fat and avoid trans fats – Try to keep saturated fat below 20g per day. Both saturated fat and trans fats (found in many processed foods) lead to inflammation of the arteries. Read labels and avoid foods which list sugar as one of the first five ingredients – In particular don’t be fooled by foods which claim to be ‘low fat’ because often they contain extra sugar instead. Healthy fats such as olive oil are better than empty sugar calories. Drink wine – But not too much! It’s a slightly bizarre (but consistent scientific truth) that teetotal folk have a higher risk of heart disease than those who drink in moderation. But a glass of red wine occasionally is very different to binge drinking once a week so be careful with this tip. Eat a rainbow of fruit and veg – Five to nine servings a day will help to keep your heart in tip-top condition. It may sound a lot but if you add chopped veg to pie fillings and casseroles and eat fruit at breakfast and salad stuff for snacks it all adds up.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

GIVE BLOOD By Louise Addison

Most of us have had or know someone who has had a blood transfusion. Blood donation is vital to help treat thousands of seriously ill patients every day and new donors are desperately needed. Currently only 4% of the eligible population are active blood donors. Here are 10 reasons to consider giving blood: Life-saver - You change lives each time you give blood. Every blood donation can save or improve the lives of up to three adults or six children. Desperate need - NHS Blood and Transplant needs many more donors to come forward to make sure the nation’s blood stocks remain at a safe level for the future. Day-to-day needs - You may think blood is only used for massive blood loss in A&E patients, but your blood could help many different people. Donated blood is also used for patients having surgery, maternity emergencies, and for people with cancer or blood disorders. 6000 donations are needed per DAY! - It's true that changes in medical practices mean demand for donated blood has reduced. But hospitals across England and North Wales still need around 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients. A quick pint - If you book an appointment, the whole process takes less than an hour. One hour, every three to six months. Just a short amount of time to do something wonderful for another human being. You’re probably eligible - You need to be in general

good health and weigh over 50kg to donate blood. If you are looking to donate for the first time you need to start on or before your 66th birthday. To check if you are eligible go to www.blood.co.uk You might be a missing type - Blood from all groups is needed but some blood groups are particularly vulnerable to shortfall such as O negative – which can be given to all patients in an emergency: think of those episodes of Casualty or ER where the doctor in charge yells 'Where's the O-NEG'! You might be young - We need more young donors. Around half of current donors are aged over 45. The more young people get involved the better future blood stocks will be safeguarded. You can start donating at 17. You might be BAME - Are you black, Asian or from an ethnic minority? Please consider becoming a donor as some rare blood types are more common among these communities. Conditions such as the sick‘for flight of le cell and thalassemia are also more likely to affect these groups and patients require regular blood transfusions, ideally from donors from a similar ethnic background. There are biscuits - Free food! Around 6 million biscuits are eaten by donors every year. Aren't we a greedy bunch? But the post donation biscuit and cuppa are important because sitting quietly while eating and drinking something helps the body to recover. If I've inspired you to become a donor go to www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23

A few health matters After my mother passed away I ventured into her bedroom cupboard where I knew she kept her medicines so that I could clear out surplus ones. I was shocked to discover packets and packets of various prescription drugs, which she had been hoarding over the previous twelve months. It wasn’t that she was collecting them, rather than taking them; it was that her prescription had been changed but she was still receiving the previous medication as well. Innocently, I bagged it all up and returned them to the chemist – thinking that those unopened packets that were still in date could be re-used somehow. I was, of course, wrong in this assumption and was informed that these drugs would all need safe disposal. When I got home I felt really troubled by this experience and asked at my local surgery when we had our next Patient Participation Group meeting what the policy is here in Wiltshire. I learnt that NHS Wiltshire spends in excess of 40,000 pounds a year on safe disposal of drugs!! What an outrageous amount of money, which could be better spent! I also learnt that if an individual discovers they have been given a drug they no longer need, but have taken it out of the chemists it cannot be returned BUT if they check the contents of the white paper bag before leaving the chemist it can be altered on the prescription and reshelved. So, if you have a number of repeat prescription items, it is worth checking that they have been correctly issued before leaving the shop. Any of these redundant drugs are also costing your surgery money, as well as doing no good in the medicine cupboard at home. Please return all unwanted medication to your chemist for safe disposal as GP surgeries are unable to accept any medication. Soon it will be ‘flu jab time – this year it would be wise to attend your local surgery for this as there are two different vaccines now and your medical record can be updated with the details of the one you receive. Basically, different vaccines have been developed to give the most effective results. For the over 65’s this is a TIV (adjuvanted trivalent vaccine- an adjuvant is a substance which enhances the body’s immune response to an antigen). The under 65’s who are considered at risk ( pregnant women, children and adults with underlying health issues, and children and adults with weakened immune systems) will be given a QIV vaccine (quadrivalent vaccine) as the best option. Surgeries will be holding clinics in the near future so that you can receive the appropriate vaccine. Each surgery will have a Patient Participation Group of some sort and most of them would like to see extra members coming forward. Inevitably, the retired members of any community are the ones seen as having time for meetings but representation across the board from the teenagers, young parents, carers and those being cared for would be excellent as we all strive to 46

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

support our surgeries and improve facilities and services. Understandably, those of us who enjoy excellent health and don’t see ourselves as regular ‘customers’ at the surgery are also needed so that there is complete representation in any group. I am involved with Patford House and Sutton Benger Patient Participation Group and we would welcome any patients to join us. Please contact Helen Strevens, the practice manager – email helen. strevens@nhs.net if you are interested. Thank you, Imogen Willgress PPG Patford House and Sutton Benger Surgeries.

people most commonly suffer sun-burn. Don’t skimp – You need to apply a shot glasssized amount of suntan lotion in the morning, then reapply every couple of hours. Skimping means you aren’t protected! High is not necessarily best – It’s better to reapply factor 30 every couple of hours than to apply factor 70 once. Choose Broad Spectrum – These sunscreens provide the maximum protection against the widest range of UV wavelengths. Don’t forget - the eyes, the tip of the nose, the tops of the feet, the lips, and near the hairline and scalp. These are the places

Apply even if you’re not at the beach – Incidental sun exposure from walking down the street, driving with the windows open and sitting in front of a window, account for most of our exposure to UV throughout our lives. Apply suntan lotion wherever you are! Reapply – Even water-resistant sunscreen needs regular reapplication. If it’s expired throw it out – Expired sunscreen breaks down and is less effective. Use a high SPF moisturiser – Every day, even in the winter! It really is the best thing you can do to protect your skin daily.

Housetrain your puppy The thing which put me off acquiring a puppy, despite the wide-blue pleading eyes of my daughter, was the thought of housetraining. I’d stumbled through toilettraining my three toddlers and frankly the experience broke me, so I did not relish the thought of starting again with the equivalent of a four-legged toddler! But eventually those wide blue eyes worked their magic and Frodo the insanely cute Cockerpoo joined our family. If I’d known how much easier housetraining a puppy is compared with housetraining a small human I would now be running a dog shelter rather than a bed, breakfast and chauffeur service for preteens. Puppies are primed to please, unlike toddlers!

The important thing is to stay with your puppy until he’s relieved himself, so you know he’s done his business and can praise him and give him a treat at the right time. Dogs have their own ‘behavioural language’ that signify they might need the toilet, such as sniffing at the door, circling or staring at you. If you find it difficult to read the clues and he makes a mistake, don’t punish, just be more vigilant next time or simply set an alarm and let him out every hour or so, rewarding appropriate toilet behaviour. Night time is the most difficult time and requires the most work. For the first few nights you’ll probably have to get up and let him out a couple of times. Say bed him down at 10pm, then let him out at 1am and 4am, getting up at 7am…obviously alter the times to suit you. Once he’s got the hang of it, drop one of the night time trips, then as his bladder control improves drop the other one. Frodo housetrained within a fortnight and was night trained in roughly the same amount of time though we had one or two little accidents during that period. Friends have suggested their dogs were housetrained in shorter or longer periods so clearly there is a variation of ‘normal’. Good luck.

Do you know the signs of overheating? Pets can easily become dehydrated quickly in this heat. Excessive panting : increased heart rate and weakness

Housetraining is all about the three ‘Rs’: Routine, Relief, Reward. But first you must accept that pooing and peeing is normal dog behaviour. Don’t ever punish a pup for peeing or pooing in the wrong place, that will just teach him that you are not to be trusted and to be more creative in his hiding place next time he has to go! It’s up to you to teach him where you want him to answer his calls of nature. Dogs are more likely to want to relieve themselves at certain times: after sleeping, eating or playing generally, so routinely take the puppy into the garden after each of these activities and wait until he pees or poos. As soon as he finishes give him a little treat. 50

The Hawley Book of the Dead by Esio Trot by Roald Dahl Veterinary Clinics Chrysler Szarlan ‘Mr Hoppy lived in a small flat high up in a tall concrete

Vete

As the front cover of the book says: enter a world of secrets, mysteries and magic.

building. He lived alone. He had always been a lonely man and now that he was retired from work he was lonelier than ever. There were two loves in Mr Hoppy’s life.’

Thameswood

We begin with a murder. Reve kills her husband, Jeremy: on stage, in front of an audience. But she doesn’t murder him. Reve and Jeremy are a magic act performing on the Vegas Strip and the highlight of their act is ‘Defying the bullets’, but it is one of those bullets that will kill him.

And so the short story of Esio Trot begins. This is pure, classic Roald Dahl, with silly words, silly characters, and, of course, wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake.

Veterinary Clinics

What at first appears to be a murder mystery of who swapped the bullets soon becomes something else as the grief-stricken Reve and her three daughters leave Las Vegas and return to her ancestral home in New England: a now-deserted hamlet of homes called Hawley Five Corners. Requested to return by her Nan she is told to ‘remember the story of the Fetch’.

So, what are his two loves? Well, there are the flowers he grows on his balcony, and then there is Mrs Silver a widow who lives in the flat below him. They only see each other when out on their balconies and Mr Hoppy has never had the courage to say more than a few words to her. But then a chance conversation changes everything. Mrs Silver has a pet tortoise called Alfie and she is concerned that Alfie doesn’t seem to grow. If only she knew how to help him grow. Mr Hoppy formulates a plan to help Alfie grow and at the same time win Mrs Silver’s affections. A plan involving silly words, a metal tube and a LOT of pet tortoises!

Thameswood

Drawing on old Irish mythology of the Fetch, the Tuatha De Dannan and Tír na nÓg, this novel draws you into this strange corner of the world where children in the 1920s disappeared, some reappeared several months later but most were never seen again. Reve discovers an old book in the house which appears to be full of blank pages. Only sometimes when she opens it there is writing, and the book gives her an insight into who she really is and the history of her family. Then further tragedy strikes as her teenage twin daughters go missing. Have they disappeared just like the earlier inhabitants of Hawley Five Corners, never to be seen again, or is there something more mundane going on? What is the truth behind the land her ancestors occupied and what will Reve do to keep her own children safe from the Fetch? What will be the ‘great reveal’ at the end of the act?

DAYS OUT

Alternative Attractions Do you fancy visiting somewhere that's a bit more unusual, perhaps a little off the beaten track? Well, here are three of our suggestions to try this summer.

St Giles’ Church & Imber Bus

Museum of Computing

Surely one of THE most unusual days out, almost anywhere in Britain, is to journey by an old London bus to an abandoned Wiltshire village’s preserved church, surrounded by a huge military training zone.

These days it’s can seem impossible to get the kids off their screens. But what if you took yourself and them for a day out to play, learn and develop their understanding of all things IT at the UK’s first computer museum – complete with lots of hands-on machines such as games consoles, calculators, robots and toys – located in Swindon town centre.

On only a few days a year does the British Army allow a fleet of London Transport Routemaster buses to travel from Warminster Station to the deserted Imber village – and other isolated locations on Salisbury Plain – to visit St Giles Church. This is the only building left intact after the Army ordered all villagers to leave the village of Imber in 1943, so American troops could train for the D-Day landings during World War Two. The Ministry of Defence allows access in August and at Christmas. This year the Friends of St Giles offer everybody a warm welcome on Saturday 18th August between 10am-6pm – via the Imberbus service – then from Sunday 19th until Thursday 23rd August inclusive between 11am-4pm, using your own transport. This Grade I listed church, dating back to Saxon times, and its wall paintings are repaired and preserved by The Churches Conservation Trust with Ministry of Defence help. More information at www.imberchurch.org.uk and imberbus.wordpress.com

Sevington Victorian School Why not make a family visit to the fascinating Sevington Victorian School when it re-opens to the public on 9th September. Set deep in the Wiltshire countryside at Grittleton, Near Chippenham, this school is a perfect period piece, where ‘history comes to life’.

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

The Museum of Computing in Theatre Square mixes education and fun, a relaxed and family-friendly place with plenty of activities on offer for kids and grown-up children too! Few can resist the ‘Pong to PlayStation’ gallery with three decades of gaming to enjoy. You can get creative with Lego and Papercraft – like Minecraft without electricity! Over 100 active displays are devoted to the history of digital development bringing alive the story of computing, together with artefacts ranging from pioneering pre70s machines, to nostalgic home computers from the 80s and 90s. Unless it’s raining, they usually park the Sinclair C5 outside too! On offer this summer is a schedule of events and activities, including themed game weekends – from racing tournaments to Mario extravaganzas – fun with robots, and a chance to build part of their Lego town. All activities are included in the standard admission charge of adults £2, children £1, concessions £1.50, and family £5. The museum is open on Fridays 10am-4pm and Saturdays 9.30am-5pm. For further details visit: www.museumofcomputing.org.uk As well as an overview of Victorian school life, you can discover the wonderful history of its original benefactor Joseph Neeld – who inherited a vast fortune and bought Grittleton House and the land around it to build a school in 1849 – and of Miss Squire, who became the teacher aged just 20 and taught there for over 50 years. When the school closed, everything was left untouched. Today, you can still see how the schoolroom looked in Miss Squire’s time along with her desk, pointer and blackboard. And on the wall, there is a picture of Joseph Neeld, For more information visit: www.sevingtonvictorianschool.co.uk

By Sarah Davey

Although playground bullying is not new it’s nature has changed with the advent of smart phones and social media. Now we see more cyber bullying, or rather we don’t see it as it tends to be hidden and carried out in secret. Almost half of all young people say they have been bullied online and more than 70% say they’ve seen it happening. As parents it can be difficult to know what to do if your child is being bullied, or conversely is a bully.

Here are some tips: Discuss bullying with your child from an early age. Discuss netiquette. Adults sometimes behave more aggressively when they are behind the safety of a computer screen, and it’s the same for children, who are still learning to navigate the online world. Make it clear that being a target is not their fault. Make it clear that whether it’s in real life or online bullying is never acceptable. Advise your child to protect their phone number by only giving it out to trusted members or family members. Tell them to keep track of who they have given it to. If your child has received a bullying message, tell them to screenshot it and send it to you. Make a note of the time and date it was sent and the number it came from, as evidence to show teachers or police.

64

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2018

Do not respond to the message. The phone number or email will probably identify the source. If the bully gets no response then they tend to stop doing it. Don’t panic if your child is the bully. It doesn’t mean they will grow into a terrible human being. But bullying behaviour can often be a cry for help. Perhaps they are finding the teen years more stressful than they are letting on. Maybe they are struggling to negotiate friendships and schoolwork. Make time to talk with them, not only about their own issues but about the impact they might be having on someone else’s life.

Chippenham volunteers celebrate major milestone

Hardworking volunteers gathered to celebrate a popular wildlife haven in Chippenham. The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group marked their 15th anniversary with a special picnic for local supporters.

developers to retired nurses and professors. Since the group was formed they have taken part in more than 200 workparties and planted around 8,000 wildflower plug plants. Julia added: “We are sincerely grateful to all of our volunteers who have contributed so much time and effort over so many years. “They can clearly see the results of their labours with the increase in wildflowers and wildlife, especially the numbers of birds and butterflies. “Looking to the future, we hope to install a new interpretation board to help people identify what they see in the sky and on the ground, and we would love to welcome more volunteers so that we can continue to safeguard the meadow for future generations. “It’s a great way to meet new people and learn new skills.” Call (01249) 654608 or visit www. baydonsmeadow.org.uk

The meadow sits on the southern bank of the River Avon just a short walk from the town centre at the end of Monkton Park. It was neglected for many years until it was bought by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity in 2000 and is now maintained by local volunteers who established the BMWG in 2003. They transformed the field by hedge-laying, hayraking, coppicing, mowing and weeding, planting thousands of flowers and bulbs, and creating a new copse. Today it provides the ideal environment for a wide range of butterflies, dragonflies, birds, bats, mice, voles, frogs and toads. Volunteers celebrated their achievements with a picnic, which also included the cutting of a specially-decorated cake featuring the BMWG logo. Chairman Julia Brotherton said: “It’s been a long process but we’ve been amazed by the results, and the meadow has become a valuable asset for the local community. “People appreciate the peaceful environment and the abundance of flora and fauna, and often sit on the log seats near the river to enjoy their surroundings.” The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group meets at least once a month, usually on the first Sunday from 10.30am. There are around 20 volunteers aged from their 20s to their 70s, with a variety of backgrounds from teachers and software 66

JOBS FOR

Collecting plant seeds ready for next season is a reasonably easy job if you know what you’re doing. Collect ripe seed on a dry day when you can see the seed heads have changed colour from green to brown, black or red. You need to collect them before they open and shed their contents. Lay them out to dry in a warm place such as a windowsill or greenhouse. Once dry, gently crush the pods and release the seeds. Store in paper packets or envelopes in an airtight container.

AUGUST Trim your hedges—mid summer new growth can make them look untidy now. Cut back your strawbe rries if you don’t want the runners to create new plants. Keep harvesting your ve getables. You can still so w oriental greens, spring onions, salad lea ves and beetroot. Collect seed from gard en plants. Keep your ponds topp ed up. Feed your soil with gr een manure

Most seed germinates best if sown as soon as it ripens, whereas seed harvested while immature will not germinate.

w o r c e r a Sc festival Wiltshire

raises £2,800 for local children’s charity Jessie May

Hilmarton Scarecrow Festival a roaring success after raising £8,000 for local causes A popular Wiltshire scarecrow festival has raised £2,800 for Jessie May, the children’s hospice at home charity providing care for terminally ill young people across the county.

“Many thanks to everyone who has supported us this year, including the scarecrow-builders, festival-goers, volunteers and the local businesses who sponsored scarecrows.”

The annual Hilmarton Scarecrow Festival was a roaring success, bringing together hundreds of residents and visitors, and 46 scarecrows, to the village last month.

Now in its fifth year, the Hilmarton Scarecrow Festival continues to be a highlight for the village and surrounding communities. Next year’s festival theme will be revealed in January.

The event raised over £8,000 for local causes including Jessie May, during two family fun days of creative scarecrow building to this year’s theme of ‘Pairs’. Mary Spooner, Treasurer of the Hilmarton Scarecrow Festival Committee, said: “We’ve had another amazing year and were so impressed by everyone’s scarecrow-building efforts! “We hold the festival to raise money for our local school, pre-school and church, but also choose a charity connected to the village to support each year. “I already knew of Jessie May and the incredible work their nurses do in the homes of life limited children, and so this year we decided they were definitely worthy of raising money for. A few of the Jessie May nurses even built their own ‘Doctor and Nurse’ scarecrow pair – and did a great job too! “The festival was wonderful as always, and this year we added new cryptic clues to go alongside the scarecrows on the trail. Entry to take part in building the scarecrows and take on the scarecrow village trail helped raise the fantastic amount we did, as well as a raffle, BBQ, tombola and cake sale. It was truly a wonderful day for the whole family, especially with the sun shining.

Debbie Clark, Swindon and Wiltshire Fundraising Officer at Jessie May, said: “This is such a wonderful gesture and we are overwhelmed at the committee’s incredible achievement. “The money raised will make such a tremendous difference to the work we do here in Wiltshire helping local children and their families. Thank you to everyone involved – we are truly appreciative of your support.” The money raised during the festival has been distributed between Jessie May, Hilmarton Primary School, Hilmarton Preschool and St Laurence Church. Jessie May provides hospice at home care for terminally ill children throughout Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, North East Somerset, Bristol and Bath.

AUTO BIOGRAPHY

South Korean motoring giant, Hyundai, has created a brand new ‘N Division’, which has sparked the awesome new i30 N. The regular variant gets a 251PS petrol turbo unit, but it’s the 275PS Performance Package i30 N that I was handed the keys to. This car gets bigger brakes to scrub the extra speed off. At the front of the model, there’s also a no-nonsense electronic differential, which decides all sorts of smart things to keep the front wheels biting into the bitumen. The i30 N’s chassis is electronically damped - and the arrangement has been designed to supply allout precision. At the same time, the system doles out a good dose of refinement, meaning comfort is not in short supply. What’s more, the car has stateof-the-art electronic dampers at each corner that empower it to do things some other challengers can’t even consider - both on tarmac and on track. The i30 N also belts out a banging tune of its own. Seriously, the car sounds incredible. And when the pedal is pushed to the metal in third gear, all sorts of crackles and pops fire from the tailpipes. What’s most extraordinary, however, is how the i30 N handles, turns and comes to a halt. The steering is outstandingly precise, and the car doesn’t feel edgy at the rear whatsoever. This is some feat, considering that it takes the Hyundai a mere 2.2 turns from lock to lock. The handling is unreservedly razor-sharp, even in ‘Normal’ setting. Things get spicier in ‘Sport’ mode, and there’s a ‘Custom’ choice in which you can alter the car’s specific characteristics. The i30 N also has, perhaps unsurprisingly, an ‘N’ mode. This is only meant for using on a track really, so the ride quality is stiff and hard-nosed. But if you’re in the right frame of mind and the weather and road conditions are okay, then it is a grininducing system. The throttle map and exhaust become zestier, while the dampers become more unyielding. Furthermore, any interruption from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is played right down. Out and out performance is heavy-duty from the 2.0-litre petrol turbo powerplant in all settings. It never feels too much, though - and the sixspeed manual transmission hops through the cogs satisfyingly. The hot Hyundai’s straight-line talent is blisteringly impressive, but it is the i30 N’s chassis that blows you away. This is the feature that remains indelibly

etched on my mind. It’s my ‘take-away’ memory of the car if you like. Sure, this isn’t the fastest hatchback ever made – but the point is, not many cars in this segment will have such an excellent chassis set-up. And, here's the occasionally thorny bit - the price. Well, with this Hyundai there is no issue. The South Korean firm knew it had to chip away at the main competition to give itself authority in the hot-hatch market. Therefore, an on-the-road price-tag of £27,995 is more than respectable, bearing in mind how capable the 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance is behind the wheel. Moreover, the car is jam-packed with kit, and it feels well screwed together. Pros ‘n’ · · · · ·

Swindon & District Samaritans

Could You Volunteer With Us? A Personal Reflection about being a Listening Volunteer

“It’s 9pm and someone is crying on the phone. The person is a complete stranger and it’s highly unlikely that I’ll ever speak to them again. They want to share what they feel is their hopeless situation with me. They’ve hinted that they might even want to kill themselves. So why am I here you ask yourself? Well, I’m a Samaritan Listening Volunteer and I’m on a shift. The same one I do each week. It’s a way for me to give back to the community and to develop my own active listening skills. As a Listening Volunteer you’re not there to offer practical solutions to their problems and often you’re glad because you’ve never been in their shoes, how would you know what’s best for them? So why is this person calling me, reaching out to another human and being more open than they have ever been with anyone else? What do they expect from me? Well to be honest you don’t know, you rarely know. But what you do know is that you will listen patiently, confidentially and without judgement. You will provide them with human contact in a time of crisis. That crisis could be almost anything: mental illness, physical health, divorce, bereavement, loneliness.

78

It really doesn’t matter. And I love it. It’s allowed me to be more patient, to focus on the underlying emotional needs of people and to know that I’m helping people. I feel this helps with my own personal wellbeing and resilience and allows me to live a meaningful life.” This is one of our volunteer’s personal story, Volunteers have different skills, experiences and motivations. ADVERTISING FEATURE

TRAVEL INSURANCE By Tom Hancock It can seem like just one more extra cost you could do without, but travel without it and you could be in trouble.

Know how much it would cost to replace baggage, from suitcases to clothes, to jewellery, including wedding rings.

Crippling costs - You risk footing a very large bill should you need healthcare or have your baggage lost or stolen. Something as simple as a stomach bug in California, which requires treatment, and later flights home, could cost in the tens of thousands of pounds. A broken hip in a European destination could lead to a bill of £15,000.

Why it matters where you're going - EU countries tend to be less expensive while Canada, the US and the Caribbean are much more so due to the incredibly high cost of medical care in those regions. Declare pre-existing conditions - certain medical conditions will add to the cost of your insurance, because insurance is about risk and certain ailments make it more likely that you might require medical attention. It may be worth looking at insurers which specialise in providing this type of insurance. Tell them everything - Even if it feels like you are hiking up the cost of your insurance policy. You don't want your insurance to be invalid if you need to make a claim. Read! - When you get your policy, make sure you read the full terms and conditions and the medical declaration carefully, so you understand exactly what you’re covered for.

Don't forget - If you are planning any sports or other activities, mention it. Skiing and extreme sports are obvious examples, but scuba diving and other activities you may not think of as “extreme” may still need extra cover.
