Snow White Pantomime 28th-30th January, 4th-6th February 7.30pm Cherhill Village Hall Cherhill Village Theatre invite all readers of The Town Crier to join them for an evening of fun and frolics. This year’s Pantomime, Snow White, will introduce some 'new faces and old hands.' Will the evil Queen Nefaria (and her sniveling sidekick Squelch’s) plans be thwarted by the adorable Seven Dwarves, ably assisted by Dame Ploppy and Muddles? Come along and see for yourself if good can once again triumph over evil! (thigh slap) Director Zoe Moore, Producer Tina Jeary
Keep Calne Clean Campaign To help ‘Keep Calne Clean’, trained Calne Town Council staff are now able to issue fixed penalty notices to those who litter or fail to clean up after their dogs. The town council see fixed penalty notices as a last resort, and would rather work with the community to reduce the problem and increase understanding about the impact of litter and dog waste on the community’s health and the environment. How much are the fixed penalty notices? The fine is £75, to be paid within 14 days. If issued for littering, this is reduced to £50 if paid within 10 days. Why is dog fouling an issue? Dog waste can be a danger to health, from causing a slip hazard to infecting wounds. In rare cases contact with dog waste can lead to toxocariasis, an unpleasant infection which is difficult to treat. To find out more, contact Calne Town Council in the following ways: Telephone: 01249 814000 Email: calne@calne.gov.uk or visit Calne Visitor & Community Information Centre on The Strand www.calne.gov.uk/Keep-Calne-Clean-Campaign.aspx

BILLY THE BALL!
Calne Town Hall Moviola SUITE FRANCAISE (15) at 7.30pm Weds 16th December 2015
A new series of books for children written and illustrated by local author Lizzie Brinkworth. Lizzie Brinkworth was born in and has always lived in Wiltshire. One of three sisters, Lizzie was inspired by the bedtime stories her father, a Wiltshire farmer, made up about a ball called Billy. The stories he created, stayed with Lizzie and she had a desire to share the friendly characters with other children.
Kristin Scott Thomas, Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts star in this story of forbidden love between a beautiful woman and a German Officer who is billetted in their home during the occupation of France. She leads a stifling existence with her domineering M. in Law whilst waiting for news of her husband who is a P.O.W.. Doors open at 7.00pm. Christmasy refreshments available. Tickets £6.00 from the information centre.

So Lizzie secretly wrote and illustrated her first Billy The Ball story, ‘Billy the ball’s big bounce’ and surprised her dad, mum and sisters with a copy. The look on her dad's face was priceless. Lizzie has since gone on to publish three more stories, ‘Billy The Ball Down On The farm’ , 'Billy The Ball and The Lost Pirate’, and 'Billy the ball's space adventure!' Billy the ball is joined by his friends who are all balls from different sports. There's Freddie the football, Nicki the netball, Timmy the tennis ball and Roger the rugby ball and many others. Together, they go on adventures in Bounce Town.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance require more locations for Textile Recycling Banks WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) is asking the public to suggest locations where mini textile recycling banks could be situated. Wiltshire Air Ambulance paramedic Steve Riddle with the Charity’s calendar and one of the Christmas cards.
WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE CALENDAR AND CHRISTMAS CARDS AERIAL photographs of iconic Wiltshire landmarks and rural scenes feature in Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s 2016 calendar. The charity’s new helicopter, a Bell 429, features in many of the photographs in the calendar. In one photograph it is pictured in the sky above Wiltshire with the county’s previous helicopter, an MD 902, used by Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). Others include the Bell 429 above the Westbury White Horse and the Caen Hill Flight of Locks in Devizes. There are also aerial photographs of iconic landmarks including Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. All the images in the calendar have been generously donated by the photographers involved. Claire Kelly, Head of People, Vision and Values at WAA, said: “It’s been a few years since we produced a calendar and we hope that people will enjoy seeing parts of Wiltshire from the air. The photographs highlight our rural county and show some of our operation.” The charity’s helicopter also features on its new Christmas cards. One design is of the helicopter flying over the Cherhill Monument and White Horse while another design features it flying over the Westbury White Horse. Another six designs features traditional Christmas scenes, including Santa and a Robin. The Christmas cards are priced £4 for a pack of ten. A triple pack, called Bethlehem, has 15 cards. The calendar is priced £5. Also for sale is the WAA 2016 diary, price £3. They are all available from outlets including WAA’s charity office at Carlton House, Maundrell Road, Calne, Wiltshire Police HQs reception in London Road, Devizes and the WAA Supporters Shop in Maristow Street, Westbury. The charity receives £250 for every tonne of textiles (clothing and shoes) recycled by Devizes Textiles Ltd from the mini textile recycling banks it operates. Danny Williamson, senior contracts manager at Devizes Textiles Ltd, said: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a valuable service and saves so many lives. “We need help to identify possible sites in Wiltshire for more mini textile recycling banks. Textile recycling is an easy way to raise money as well as recycling and reducing waste. Sites could be at shopping centres, supermarkets, businesses, village halls, schools or pubs.” Devizes Textiles began raising money for WAA in 2009 with half a dozen mini textile recycling banks. Over the years the number of banks has grown steadily and there are now 80. Cheryl Johnson, Head of Fundraising and Communications at WAA, said: “Since we started operating as a stand-alone air ambulance in January this year it costs £2.5 million a year to keep our helicopter flying. The mini textile recycling banks operated by Devizes Textiles Ltd have proven to be popular and if we can increase the number of banks it would help raise more money for our lifesaving service. “If people have suggestions for easily accessible sites for a mini textile recycling bank where they live, shop or work, then Devizes Textiles Ltd would love to hear from them. If another charity’s textile bank is already on site, then it’s usually not possible to house another charity collection bank on the same site.” To suggest a possible location for a mini textile recycling bank please email info@devizestextiles.com or call Devizes Textiles Ltd on 01380 724451. India trekkers raise £30,000 for Cancer Care
S
EVENTEEN inspirational fundraisers have returned home from a challenging five day charity trek through the fascinating region of North India at the heart of the Himalaya’s, the world’s highest mountain range. The overseas adventure wasn’t just about facing tough terrain, they had plenty thrown at them from start to finish including experiencing an overnight Indian sleeper train, snow, thunder and lightning storms and really went back to basics at camp. Between them, the team has raised an amazing combined total surpassing £30,000 towards the The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign - which is fundraising for a world class new Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The team began the challenge in Dehli, jumping straight in and getting out of their comfort zones with the first of many adventures…. almost missing their sleeper train because of Delhi’s infamous colorful and chaotic traffic! Having travelled five miles in two and a half hours in the coach the group decided to get out and make a run for the last mile to the station on foot. With seven minutes to spare, they boarded the sleeper train for a 10 hour journey to Pathankot and then straight onto Dharamsala – home to the Dalai Lama and the
22
start and finish point of the five day trek that lay ahead. Trekking up to eight hours a day the group faced many ascents and descents, river and suspension bridge crossings through pine forests and up to a glacial field. They were also able to immerse themselves in much of the traditional culture, passing through charming villages warmly greeted by the locals, Hindu settlements and Buddhist Monasteries all with the stunning backdrop of the Himalayan Mountains. For each member of the team, the trek has been a personal and life changing journey which has brought with it new experiences and friendships in a truly united effort for Cancer Care at the RUH. The RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising £8.5 million towards a pioneering Cancer Centre at The Royal United Hospital in Bath.
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2015
This new Centre will transform the care for patients and their families affected by this life changing diagnosis. The hospital is planning on replacing its outdated 1940s cancer facilities, with a world class new Centre that is truly fit for purpose that will bring treatment ‘under one roof’. To date the campaign has raised £6.9 million and its with the support of the public and incredible fundraisers like the India trekkers, that will help raise the final £1.6 million. With the success of the India Trek, the Forever Friends Appeal are now looking for another group of adventurous fundraisers to take part in Trek Cambodia 2016 - a 95km trek to the top of the sacred Kulen Mountain and to explore the jewel in Cambodia’s crown, Angkor Wat. An Information Evening will be held at the Hospital on Thursday 28th January with talks from the Global Adventure Challenge trek leader, the fundraising team, plus a tour of the current Oncology facilities and you’ll get a chance to hear from the India trekkers about some of their expiences. To book your place or to find out more, please visit www. foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk or give Laura a call on 01225 821535. For more information, visit www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk

PENSION SCAMS Over 55s are being repeatedly contacted with cold-calls and emails offering fraudulent pension opportunities, warns Citizens Advice. Over four months after the pension reforms came into effect, figures from the national consumer body find that two in five Citizens Advice pensions staff across England and Wales have seen people targeted repeatedly with pension scams.
A Christmas full of all things sweet… If you’re stuck for Secret Santa or what to fill the stockings with this year, give your loved ones something unique with Bath Cake Company gift vouchers. Your friends and family can use the vouchers towards a class of their choice, to experience our enjoyable and educational lessons. Give them a fun-filled memory from as little as £10. Gift vouchers can be purchased online via www.shop.bathcakecompany.co.uk or 01225 446094.
Albert Ball, Project Manager at Wiltshire Citizens Advice Pension Wise said: “Pension scams threaten people’s financial security. Scammers are finding new ways to go after people’s pension pots including offering free pension reviews and promising to invest funds that don’t necessarily exist. “If you’ve had an offer or signed up to a pension scheme you’re unsure about, I urge you to contact your local Citizens Advice where our staff can offer free help and support.” Citizens Advice offer Pension Wise guidance where people aged over 50 can access free face to face guidance sessions. To book an appointment call 01722 580052 Common signs of a pension scam • Pension help for free: an offer of help with your pension, such as free review or help tracing a lost pension • High rates of return: any promotion offering you a much higher rate of return than other investors

St Peter’s C of E Academy by Angie Jones-Moore
St Peter’s C of E Academy in Chippenham has had a busy start to the new academic year. September welcomed the new Head Teacher, Mr Mark Everett to the team of teachers, teaching assistants, governors and pupils. Mark has joined the school from his position as Deputy Head Teacher at St Mary’s school, Chippenham. He worked closely with his predecessor, Mrs Harle, to ensure the handover ran smoothly. The school bid a fond farewell to Julia Harle as she commenced her retirement in July. With a successful start to the autumn term, the harvest festival provided The Doorways charity in Chippenham with a generous donation of food which each pupil contributed to in aid of the less fortunate and homeless members of the community. RE Inspection After the recent RE inspection (SIAMS) St Peter’s C of E Academy are thrilled with the report’s conclusion that rates the school as ‘outstanding’ overall for religious education. A full report is available on the school’s website www.st-peters.wilts.sch.uk.

Chickens! There has been the addition of chickens to the St Peter’s family. Names were chosen by the children, with a name pulled from the hat for each bird. The children are learning about caring for the chickens and egg production as the chickens live a happy life in the extensive nature area the school has to offer. Advent Fayre - Friday 4th December 3.15pm. The advent fayre is the next event to be held at St Peter’s C of E Academy, on Friday the 4th of December starting at 3.15pm the school is open to all with free entry to the festivities. The Christmas themed afternoon is organised and run by the school’s charity Friends of St Peter’s (FOSP) a team of enthusiastic and dedicated parents who use their free time to arrange fund raising events on behalf of the school. There are the favourites such as the chocolate tombola, regular tombola and of course a fayre would not be complete without a raffle. The children make fun games to play show casing their creative talents, as well as a lucky dip and pick a straw. There are decorations also made by the children and gifts to buy, with thanks to our invited stall holders including local homemade crafts. Father Christmas will be there in his purpose built grotto within the school, as an extra bonus there will be magic reindeer food available to buy too! Members of the teaching team will be there as well as many of the pupils, it is a great opportunity to look around the school in a relaxed festive atmosphere. The schools choir, The Melody Makers will be performing during the advent fayre, with hot food, cakes and drinks to buy there really is no better way to spend an afternoon.

Food & Drink
Ingredients
Eggnog Creamy and sweet; a Christmas cuddle in a glass! In old American Christmas films, people always seemed to be drinking eggnog. It sounds cosy and Christmassy and very American, but in fact eggnog traces its roots back to a 14th century England drink called posset. This was a drink of hot milk curdled with ale. Later in history eggs were added. Milk and eggs were expensive commodities in England and so the drink went out of fashion. When the American colonies were formed there was land a-plenty for chickens and cows and so it regained popularity over there. The American plantations meant that rum was plentiful too and the drink became alcoholic and was enjoyed by the masses.
Preparation time: 20 minutes plus cooling and chilling time Serves: 8 36

700ml whole milk (I’ve tried it with semi-skimmed and it works well too) 240ml double cream 3 cinnamon sticks 1 vanilla bean pod, split and seeds removed 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish 5 yolks, separated 130g granulated sugar 175ml Dark Rum or brandy Cinnamon sticks for garnish Method In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine milk, cream, cinnamon, vanilla bean, vanilla seeds, and nutmeg. Bring slowly to the boil. As soon as it boils remove from the heat and leave to cool so the flavours can infuse. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick and ribbons form when the whisk is lifted. Strain the milk mixture then slowly whisk it into the egg and sugar mixture and continue to mix until everything is combined and smooth. Add the rum or brandy, and stir. Refrigerate overnight if serving chilled. The argument rages over whether eggnog should be served chilled or warm. Personally I like it warm but chilled is good too. Either way, serve and garnish with whipped cream if desired, grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick.

Maud Heath Harvest 2015 I N excess of eighty pickers from the Wiltshire region and beyond, grasped their pruning scissors in pursuit of a heavy harvest for Maud Heath Vineyard this year. Vineyard Manager Dominic Bateman said, “We are very grateful for the response we’ve had from the local community, helping us pick the grapes this season”
For a chance to win two bottles of Maud Heath wine enter our Christmas Competition on page 32

fruit, which is now being transformed into the 2015 vintage Maud Heath wines. The grape harvesting process lasted just over a month, Maud Heath Vineyard provided a selection of locally farmed BBQ meats, salads, pastas, vegetarian foods, and other farm fresh produce to helpers, and they were also given a bottle of wine to take home. Dominic Bateman added, “It was another fantastic crop, with high quality fruit which will produce some wonderful wines in the not so distant future.”

Which Wine with what?
Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match.
The Perfect Christmas Table Whether you are using new festive tableware or the dinner set you keep for special occasions, create a table to be proud of. Think about your colour scheme. Are you going for sophisticated white and gold, elegant white and silver, festive red and green or something more modern such as purple and turquoise? Are there some handed down family decorations that you want to include or are you going for the fun factor? Crackers and candles are traditional but you could also include Christmas table confetti and seasonal items such as Santa shaped cruet. For many Christmas Day is one of the few times when three or more courses will be served. If you are having soup, the spoon for this should be on the far right. A fish knife would be on the inside of the spoon with the main course knife on the inside of that and a desert knife closest to the plate. On the left side working inwards it would be the fish fork and then the main course fork. The desert spoon would be above the plate and facing left with the desert fork facing right and closest to the plate. Side plates go to the left and glasses are placed top right. Add candles or fairy lights and you’re good to go.

Fish course - Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require well-bodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well. Spicy dishes - You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes. Juicy red meat - Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon. Turkey - Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie main - There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course - There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy!

New Year
Making your New Year’s Resolutions by Kate Duggan
D
ID you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong:
Write it down Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike? Break your goal into smaller ones So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight?
Remind yourself why you’re doing it Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again. Good luck!

Health Matters
A cure for Christmas I
T’S Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year! Unfortunately, it is also the unhealthiest time of the year, with coughs and colds shared abundantly under the mistletoe and our immune system run ragged by late nights, an increase in alcohol and an unhealthy diet of minced pies and sausage rolls. Here at the Surgery we see more patients in December with minor illnesses such as ear infections, sore throats, sinusitis etc, than at any other time of the year. It’s the sneezing season! I very rarely visited my GP Surgery as a child, at the onset of the sniffles my Mum would whip out the Lucozade or warm Ribena, cold flannels for fevers and hot water bottles for ear aches. A ‘stuff and nonsense’ approach to tummy aches and a liberal use of TCP for cuts and scrapes was the measure of healthcare in our household, so that, by the time I flew the nest to go to college, I was able to adequately manage minor illness without too much fuss or panic. Once I had my own children I quickly realised that not everyone has the same ‘chopped off your finger? Oh dear, never mind, feed it to the dogs and carry on’ attitude to dealing with health issues. Indeed, my own children have often refused many a home-made vinegar and honey based tincture in favour of modern cough mixture, with a decidedly more palatable flavour.

has other ideas and wants us to slow down, so gives us symptoms in order to force us to do so. A fever, for example, is a sign that the body is fighting off infection – but it is understandable that at the first sign of a temperature some patients will call their GP in search of antibiotics, because it is such an unpleasant symptom. If you do have an infection, antibiotics are often not the answer and aren’t always prescribed by your GP. In fact if we don’t use antibiotics appropriately it can cause antibiotic resistance, where the infection adapts to make antibiotics less affective. This is one of the most significant threats to patient’s safety in Europe with 25,000 people dying each year with infections resistant to antibiotics. In most cases minor illness can be dealt with on our own, without the need to see a GP. Your local Pharmacy is a good place to start. There is a plethora of over the counter medicines to treat most common ailments and Pharmacists are qualified to give advice on treating symptoms and improving health and well-being. It’s also a good idea to stock up your cabinet with medicines to treat common illnesses, so you are prepared if you do get a bad case of the Christmas collywobbles.
It’s never very nice being poorly. In fact, this close to Christmas, none of us have the time to get ill. But when we are under the weather, be it a bug or backache, we want to deal with it quickly and get better as soon as possible. However, our body 44

Another great source of information for self-help is the NHS Choices website www. nhs.uk. Not only does it have a Health A-Z with information on health conditions from Acne to Xerostomia (Dry Mouth) but also has a very handy symptom tracker – which can be helpful to find out what is the best course of treatment for your symptoms. NHS 111 can also provide help or advice, especially if you are in need of urgent medical assistance which doesn’t require a 999 call. The trained nurses and paramedics who support the specialist call handlers can provide you with health information or reassurance and can also signpost you to local services if you don’t know who to call or if you don’t have a GP. NHS 111 is also the number use in order to reach the Out of Hours service when your GP is closed, for example over bank holidays. Just like Santa, this is the busiest time of the year for the NHS, so not only does self help relieve pressure on our most valuable health resources but it also means you don’t have to wait for an appointment with your doctor or nurse to start your journey back to good health. As an early Christmas present, I would happily give you the recipe for my ‘hold your nose’ kill or cure, honey, lemon, ginger and vinegar mixture – but I don’t think the local A&E department would cope! Here’s wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year from all the team at Beversbrook Medical Centre!

Health & Beauty What is SHINE Wiltshire? SHINE stands for Self Help, Independence, Nutrition and Exercise and is a support programme that looks at healthy lifestyles in a way that is fun, involving and interactive. SHINE offers tips and advice on healthier lifestyles around topics such as portion sizes, food groups, healthy lunchboxes, breakfasts and food labelling. Every session includes fun games and activities such as; Tae Kwon Do, swimming, walking, boxing, Frisbee, dodgeball and dance. SHINE WILTSHIRE is a 10 week healthy weight management programme developed for children aged 7-11 years, with a BMI over the 91st centile. SHINE supports them and their families to make the necessary changes to lead a healthier lifestyle. Each two hour weekly session covers various topics on nutrition, food, and physical activity. SHINE really focuses on fun, and children and families that have been involved so far have really enjoyed being part of SHINE and have made some really significant progress too which has been fantastic to see! The SHINE teams are really inspirational and motivational and have lots of various experiences they share with the children and families. The course is free. SHINE has been working with 46 families over the last 12 months and our families have seen big improvements in behaviour change amongst their children as well as a change in their tummy and hip sizes too! With 100% satisfaction from families attending, up until June 2015, 78% of parents reported that their child had increased their activity levels, increased their fruit and vegetable consumption and reduced their screen time (playing on computers or watching TV) and 100% of children all maintained or decreased their hip or waist measurement.
A Mum said: “I’d recommend this to any family considering a change. We’ve received great support from SHINE and it’s helped me understand what we can all do as a family to be healthier.”
48
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2015

The gift of beauty by Kate Duggan Ah Christmas. The time of year when you know you’ll be given at least one supermarket bubble bath set that will end up in the charity shop. If you don’t want to commit the same present buying mistakes, read on for our pick of the top beauty buys this Christmas. Teens and tweens - Buying for a teen? M&S have some really cute gift sets out, including a set of mini lip glosses for £9.50. The glosses are also perfect for splitting up to add to Christmas crackers or stockings. It’s what’s outside that counts! - Let’s face it, when it comes to some members of the family, it’s often as much about the packaging as it is the product. Head to White Stuff for some gorgeously designed beauty products, including a body butter for £9.95, make-up bag for £15 and soaps for £5. Bargain hunter? - TK Maxx is always worth a rummage for beauty products. You can get your mitts on some top brands, at well below the RRP. You’ll also want to check out the bargain beauty bundles at www.halfpriceperfumes.co.uk and www.latestinbeauty.com. A touch of indulgence - The Forever Frangipani Collection by Elemis is one of those gifts that’s pretty much guaranteed to please. It’s £39.90, but includes a shower cream, body oil, body cream and body mist, that are worth more than £70 altogether. The frangipani fragrance is warm, rich and evokes the feeling of an expensive foreign holiday to a sunnier climate. Bliss. Looking to really splash out? Try Elemis’ Heritage Heroes. It’s an eye watering £225, but you do get 25 products, worth £425 altogether. Charity gifts - Green People has partnered with the Woodland Trust on a range of gift sets, including the Hand Care Collection (£15.95), Facial Care Collection (£15.95) and Men’s Collection (£19.95). Other great charity gifts on the market include Lush’s Charity Pot hand and body lotion (£6.95). For the boys - There are some great men’s gift sets out this Christmas, including the Nuxe Men Survival Kit (a bargain at £8.50) and the Elemis Perfect Man set (£49). Origins, Darphin and Lancome usually have some good male grooming sets out for Christmas too. One for your list - Finally, if you fancy adding one to your own wish list, Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Aromatherapy Bath and Massage Oil Organic Collection is definitely worth a look. Featuring six mini oils, all gorgeously scented, this is a real treat, especially if you specify that a massage needs to be included as part of the gift… 50

Drinking Responsibly As we head towards the festive season there’s a renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving. In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three and eleven penalty points. There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three years It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence results. Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving, reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be more difficult to process information for example. All of these put you at risk. The advice for avoiding drink driving includes using designated drivers who drink soft drinks or zero alcohol varieties only. Choose nights out that don’t include drinking and use public transport or taxis.

Deck the Halls! by Nikki Seal, Real Paintbox Company
T
HAT time of year is nearly upon us – Chistmas time, mistletoe and wine, children singing Christian rhyme (as in the words of Sir Cliff Richard, just in case you hadn’t recognised the lyrics – am resisting the temptation to carry on with the next verse – I know it so well – if you WANT to know the next line, just pop into our shop over the Festive period – I’m sure ‘Sir Cliff ’ will be making an appearance on the old record player at some stage…) It’s strange really – the most stressful time of the year – with presents to buy, cards to wrap and menus to be planned, yet we seem to find ourselves adding a few DIY projects to the list because ‘the family’s coming’. We’ve had ALL YEAR to ‘review the glassware situation’, add a feature wall to the lounge, buy some new candlesticks for the mantle, paint the spare bedroom and SUDDENLY it’s the busiest time of the year and the realisation suddenly dawns, that just plonking a bit of fir along the mantelpiece and sticking a tree in the corner of the lounge is not going to be enough to give that instant Festive transformation that we are seeking. But how can we create a Winter Wonderland that will capture the essence of Christmas when, for 11 months of the year our room schemes are designed for normal day-to-day living? Firstly decide which room is going to receive the Christmas Touch. Where will you and your family be spending the most time – kitchen, family room or lounge?
54
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2015
Then decide on your Christmas Colour Theme. To really set the room off without completely redecorating, just paint or paper a feature wall. It’s quick and simple to do and will go a long way towards creating the atmosphere that you want. If the furniture’s a little tired, jazz it up with chalk paint and wax. Why not do a dry run on ‘laying the Christmas Table’. Wishing you’d invested in more crockery, jugs, and candles on Christmas Day is just too late! To help, Sam and I have put together some inspirational mood boards based on a Festive Theme to get you in the mood for a bit of HO HO HO!! Christmas provides a great excuse to indulge in the luxury of gold and damask – whether it’s on napkins, wallpapers or tablecloths – a little bit of gold goes a long way. Shimmering accessories jazz up a neutral space so if your lounge or dining room has fallen into a bit of a beige comfort zone, add a bit of sparkle with some mercury hurricane lamps and candle sticks. Everyone loves a splash of berry red at this time of the year – reminding us of winter lodges hidden in snow filled valleys. Warm, cheery and welcoming – a dash of red is a real winter warmer and looks amazing by candlelight Now all you have to do is just pop a Christmas CD on the player and let the merriment begin!

Safety Alarms by Debbie Singh-Bhatti
A
ROUND 140 house fires occur every day in the United Kingdom, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and over 11,000 injuries each year. Many of these could be prevented with an early warning system in place - such as a smoke alarm. They can detect fire in its early stages and give you a few extra precious minutes to make a safe escape. There are four types: Ionisation alarms are the cheapest and are very sensitive to small particles of smoke from fast flaming fires (like paper or wood), but they can be over sensitive near kitchens. They are best fitted on landings. Optical alarms are more effective at detecting large particles of smoke from slow burning fires, such as from foam-filled upholstery and PVC wiring. They are ideal for bedrooms, living rooms and the hall. Heat alarms are insensitive to smoke, but detect an increase in temperature. They only cover a relatively small area, so you may need several in a large room. They are a good choice for a kitchen or garage. Combined alarms include an optical and heat alarm which will reduce the occurrence of false alarms and increase the speed of detection. They should be fitted on landings and in bedrooms, living rooms and halls. Some alarms are interlinked, which means that smoke detected in one room can raise an alarm call
56
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2015
elsewhere in the house. Some have a light that comes on when the alarm sounds, which can help you find your way out and also alert people with hearing problems. As a minimum you should fit one alarm on each floor, but the more you have fitted, the more protected you are. Remember – you are twice as likely to die in a house fire where no alarm is fitted. Smoke alarms do not detect the presence of carbon monoxide (CO), which is a colourless, odourless, tasteless – but highly poisonous – gas, produced when carbon-based fuels like gas, oil, wood and coal do not burn completely. Around fifty people die each year from CO poisoning. A CO detector should be fitted in every room containing a fuel burning appliance such as a boiler, cooker or fire. Costing between £15 and £35, a detector should have an audible alarm – not just a colour change or back spot indicator – to wake you when you are asleep and at your most vulnerable. Please ensure that your alarm complies with British Standard EN50291 and that it gives a warning when it reaches the end of its useful life. In addition to fitting a CO alarm, also make certain you have your gas appliances and flues serviced regularly by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Gardening
Which Christmas tree? by Rachel Leverton
W
HEN we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines.
58
Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties.
The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out.
Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium.
Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large mess...I know this to be true because several

ECO-FRIENDLY? • For true eco-friendliness buy British-grown trees. • Most councils offer a Christmas tree shredding service. The shreddings are then composted. • Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. • Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing environmental carbon dioxide Christmases ago I was the person clearing it all up at 2 in the morning...don’t make my mistake! ADVERTISING FEATURE
Is your website ready for 2016?
W
ITH THE NEW YEAR NEARLY UPON US, now is the perfect time for a quick review of your website. It doesn’t take long to check that it’s still serving the needs of your business and that it’s ready for whatever 2016 might bring. Here are my top five health-checks to keep your website in tip-top shape: Add a news item or blog post Recent activity on a website creates a good impression for new visitors. If your website hasn’t been updated in ages, they may feel that your business isn’t successful, active, or cared about. They may even wonder if you’re still trading! An easy way to remedy this is to add a blog post or a news article. As these usually carry a date on them it’s the perfect visual indicator that you’re still around - even if what you post doesn’t get read. If you don’t have a blog on your site, you could add a ‘Happy New Year’ message to your home page, or offer a discount for the first 20 customers in 2016 (just remember to take it off again!) Change the copyright date Many websites have a copyright date in the footer. When these aren’t updated, the site gives the impression of being neglected. Just swap in the new year, or a time span such as ‘Copyright 2013-2016’.
Everything you need to get your business online for a fixed monthly amount. Friendly local web designer for hire. I will work with you and take care of everything, including: • PLANNING • DESIGN • BUILDING
Get a website from £40 per month
Re-read your content Content goes out of date too. But even if nothing’s recently changed in your business, take the opportunity to read through your content. Looking at it after a break of a few months or years often gives a fresh perspective. Are your pages well-written and free from typos? Is the information adequate? What impression does your content give to a potential customer? And of course, if there have been changes to the business, your website should reflect these. If you have too many pages to trawl through all at once, make a start with the most frequently visited pages. Remember that regularly updated websites achieve better rankings from search engines - another good reason to keep things fresh. Check your images Website images influence a visitor’s first impressions. Potential customers quickly decide if a web page is relevant to their needs, and images are a key part of that assessment. So have a quick check that your chosen images actually reflect the subject of the page! Also, now might be the time to begin replacing any stock photos with your own. Many businesses launch their website with generic images, intending to replace them later on. Using good-quality images of your own will make your site less corporate and more individual.

Equine tips for winter W by Angie Jones-Moore
ITH the darker mornings and limited day light horse ownership can become increasingly difficult, some owners only see their trusted companions under the cover of darkness with work and family commitments, it can be challenging trying to fit everything in during the day light hours. It isn’t all doom and gloom! There are ways to make the most of your time and to keep your horse fit and well during the winter months.
Getting organised and a little forethought really can help to make life so much easier in the winter. Buying bedding in bulk can save money and time, most local companies offer a discount for bulk buying and deliver for free, therefore saving the relentless trips bath and forth buying one of two bales at a time. Filling hay nets and making feeds in advance can make the morning run smoother when preparing the stable ready for the evening. Saving you being covered in hay before work! You don’t necessarily need to have an array of feed buckets either, making the feed in a carrier bag and putting it back in the feed bin almost makes for a horse take away. Simply tip the bag into the clean bucket ready to feed. Any time saved in yard duties, of course frees up a little more time for the all important riding which is also challenging. Squeezing in rides here and there often means our equine friends are exercised less in the winter, lunging and leading in hand are two great ways to boost the exercise and saves a little time too. Hale Equine veterinary practice based in Chippenham, are a specialist team of equine vets with over 32 years experience and knowledge. Peter, Anna, Charlie and Nicola are in a good position to offer advice on how to care for equines in the inclement weather. Keeping horses safe and well in the challenging months of the year. Anna Quiggin has a wealth of experience as an equine veterinarian. ‘If you have to suddenly stable your horse due to adverse weather conditions; consider adding a desert spoon of table salt to their feed to stimulate thirst and increase water intake. This helps prevent impaction colic, which is a risk when horses are feed just hay not grass and when they are not moving around as much. Wetting hay and ten minutes on the lunge can also help.’ Mud is the horse owners’ worst enemy, everything gets covered in it including the owners! Horses begin to resemble wallowing hippos, with the hooves subjected 66
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2015
to the wet conditions there are some health concerns that can arise when the mud becomes consistent.
d
‘Keep hooves healthy in the wet and mud by regularly picking them out; consider using eucalyptus oil as an antiseptic to reduce the risk of thrush. This is an effective treatment because it gets taken up into the frog and hoof tissues, thereby working at a deeper level.’ Although it is tempting to wash horses and see them clean before being stabled, Anna advising that this isn’t necessarily the right thing to do in some instances. ‘Let the mud dry on your horses’ legs and then brush it out in the morning, if you have a feathered legged horse. Washing the mud off can leave legs cold and wet over night, which is actually worse than mud is for mud fever.’ Winter isn’t as long as we all think it is, in fact the clocks go forward on Sunday 27th of March. For a matter of months we are seemingly battling with the daylight hours, or lack of them! A bit of organising and some good advice means horse owners are able to enjoy their horses a little more. Spring will be here before we know it!

A Good Christmas Read Sponsored by Devizes Books
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
.................................. Long before Jim Carrey took the character to the big screen, this book had captured the hearts of generations of children. It’s a marvellous story of seasonal redemption in the best tradition. It’s every bit as timeless as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The lonely Grinch hates Christmas; the noise, the feasting, the singing. His loathing of the festivities is focussed on the merry little Whos, who really know how to throw a Christmas party. He decides that this year he will put a stop to the proceedings and sets about wrecking their big day. Will he succeed? Well it’s no secret to say that happily his plans are thwarted in the nicest way possible, as he discovers that the most important thing about Christmas is love, friendship and sense of belonging to a community.
illustrated detailed letters from Father Christmas; letters populated by a cast of characters which included elves, goblins and a clumsy polar bear. Through these letters, Tolkien entertained his children with stories of high-jinks at the North Pole. It’s true the language can seem a little formal and stilted at times by today’s standards, but they were written in the 1920s and 30s and Tolkien is as much a product of his time as any author. His affection for his children shines through every page regardless. As they were written for real children the reader receives an insight into what the interests of the Tolkien children might have been: prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, the night sky and animals to name a few. All the letters are lavishly illustrated with fantastical intricate pictures, and these bring the stories to life. Even non-Tolkien fans should love this charming book. It’s wonderful for reading alone in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate, or for sharing with your own children. Perfect seasonal fare.
Reviews by Sarah Davey
DEVIZES BOOKS
This is Seuss at his best; a riotous rhyming adventure and an adorably grumpy anti-hero.
Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkien
....................................... Mention Tolkien and you will undoubtedly think of his epic adventures - The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But as father to four children Tolkien had a softer more whimsical side. Each December over the course of their childhood he wrote and 68

The Missing Peace
I
love Christmas. The cards, tree, crackers and perhaps most importantly, the prezzies. One strange thing I’ve noticed though, that Christmas always comes when the shops are most crowded? Also, everyone seems to do Christmas Day slightly differently: Some people open presents in the morning, others after lunch; Some hang stockings, others use pillow cases; Some have a lunch at 1 p.m., others eat after the Queen’s Speech. And it’s funny how we all stick to our own family tradition rigidly. I remember when we were first married, Anna’s family Christmas wasn’t the same as my family Christmas! Then when children came, even more little traditions emerged. I was introduced to knocking on doors to see if Santa was there, table presents, and the Christmas pudding had to be homemade! Whatever Christmas family traditions we hold sacred, I would recommend finding a way to hold the sacred within those traditions. Remember the light that shines in the darkness, the baby that embodies the divine, the message of love that casts out all fear and thaws out even the hardest of hearts. Incorporate them into your Christmas Day. Without the sacred, the manger is just an empty feeding trough. With the sacred though, the emptiness is filled. Our troughing at lunch time turns into feasting in the presence of a guest of honour. Last year, I had a great idea to fill the children’s time. I bought a Jigsaw! It was an ambitious purchase. I thought it needed to be challenging. It was a picture of hundreds of jelly beans. After an hour, all the children had drifted off, bored to death, and I alone was left to piece the jigsaw together. I kid you not, the puzzle lasted nearly a week, I kept going back to it whenever I had five minutes, finding straight edges, systematically sorting out the colours, until finally it was complete. Actually, when I say complete, it wasn’t exactly complete, and you know what’s coming next; despite it being a brand new jigsaw, there was one piece missing. The frustration!!!! The whole family looked everywhere, along skirting boards, under the sofa, behind the curtains, but nothing and now we have a jigsaw, with a missing piece. Mmmmm… missing peace. I guess that’s what I’m trying to get at. Christmas without Christ is missing the Prince of Peace. The peace of God that quietens our restless hearts. The peace that calm our fears. You only have to swap a couple of letters for SACRED to become SCARED. The Sacred in Christmas confronts our fears and replaces it with hope. Hope of a new life and being forgiven for
70

our mistakes. Hope of better relationships and lives ruled by love. Hope of heaven when we finally let go of this life. St. Paul to the Romans says, “may the God of hope, fill you with joy and peace as you trust in him (Rom 15 v 13). Paul is saying if we can come to trust in God, through Jesus, we will have lives filled with hope, peace and joy. We just have to trust. There’s another Christmas tradition, Anna and I enjoy every year. It’s called “who’s that card from?” Every year we get at least one card from a person we don’t recognise. Last year, it was a card with a Birmingham postmark and the writing is almost indecipherable, but we think it was from Deirdre and Bernard. The repeated conversation between my wife and I goes something like this: “Who are Deirdre and Bernard? Are they from your side of the family?” “No, they must be from your side of the family” comes the response. It still remains a mystery, so if you know, do drop me a line.
Don’t be tempted to let the Christmas hope remain a mystery. Don’t settle for living with the missing piece never discovered. The baby is still to be found and He is present now. You can meet him in the singing of carols, school nativity plays or perhaps even a quiet moment first thing in the morning on Christmas Day. The Magi took a little time out to uncover the mystery and they weren’t called wise men for nothing!! Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. It’s the child in me! There’s a hint of excitement you feel in the air, Shop windows have tinsel and lights everywhere. There’s so much to choose – I don’t know where to look. Who’d like the posh perfume, and who wants a book? Chocolates, and candles, bright crackers and cards, Labels and paper, silk ribbons in yards. Santa’s and snowmen, and cans of spray snow – (That sticks to the windows and just won’t let go!) Fretting since August where to stand the tree. (Poor Fred’s getting just a bit fed up with me!) I hope that it snows – just an odd flake or two, It makes Christmas special. I love it – don’t you? Windows in houses glow warm in the night. Fir trees inside showing twinkling light. Caroller’s voices ring clear on the air, Excited children, bright eyed everywhere. Harassed late shoppers stock up for a siege, It’s always the same, buying more than they need. Tempted by bargains, we push through the shops, Mustn’t forget things, get caught on the hop. Wrapping the presents, all piled in a heap – Sellotape stuck to the dog, floor – and ME! Where did I hide those last presents I bought? (And who were they for?) Help the time’s getting short. I’m sure a bulb’s gone on the wreath on the door. My fault – didn’t check ‘em. (I’ve done that before!) The night sky is black, sttars shine cold in the sky. At last I can fall into bed with a sigh! But just like a child – too excited to sleep, I doze on and off till the grey dawn light creeps. Then stumble downstairs, yawning still sleepily, To sit by the fire in the lights of the tree. When later the family arrive full of fun, You finally know Christmas now has begun:
