The celebration is in honour of our "local" saint. Edmund was Vicar of Calne and Treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral from 1222 to 1233, after which he became Archbishop of Canterbury. In this role he went to Rome to visit the Pope but during his journey he was taken ill and was returning home when he died at Soisy-Bouy on 16th November 1240. His body was taken to the Cistercian Abbey of Pontigny. He was canonised by Pope Innocent IV in 1246 and on the Feast of Pentecost 1247 his body was enshrined above the High Altar in Pontigny Abbey. Pilgrimages were made from Calne in 1996 and 2013 and so we are celebrating him and our connection to him on this significant day. All are welcome to join us, especially the visitors to the Twinning weekend who are in Calne, some of whom come from Charlieu which is not too far from Pontigny where St Edmund is known as St Edme.

Putting Calne on the Map

‘BLUES IN THE PEWS 2016’ Top local band ‘Blues Reviewed’ returns to Cherhill Church Friday 6 May at 7.30 pm. Tickets £10 Following its sell-out performance two years ago, popular Wiltshire-based jazz-blues band ‘Blues Reviewed’ will be returning to perform in St. James Church, Cherhill to raise funds towards the church’s on-going maintenance. ‘Blues Reviewed’ have been together for about ten years performing at venues across the county and beyond, attracting a strong following for their mix of material.

Formed in 2014, volunteer-led community group Calne Our Place has been working for the past 18 months on several projects to raise the profile of Calne as a visitor destination. Supported by Calne Town Council, the project aims to celebrate Calne’s unique heritage, vibrant community and independent businesses. Calne benefits from several high profile connections, as highlighted by chair of the group Naomi Beal, “Our town should be proud of the role it has played in history, most notably as the home of the popular Wiltshire Cure produced by the Harris factory and as the home of Joseph Priestley when he discovered Oxygen in 1774.” Today, visitors and locals alike can discover Calne’s heritage by following the Blue Plaque trail around the town’s Heritage Quarter and visiting Calne Heritage Centre. For more information, visit www.calneheritage. co.uk and like Calne Our Place’s Facebook page to take part in their weekly Calne Quiz. The town’s position on the A4 neighbouring Avebury World Heritage Site, Cherhill White Horse, AtwellWilson Motor Museum and Bowood House & Gardens makes Calne the perfect base for exploring Wiltshire. With a six month trial of 2 hours free car parking in the Heritage Quarter in place until June, now is the perfect time to pay Calne a visit.

The band applies a bluesy feel to numbers that might not have originally been classed as ‘Blues’, as well as performing well-known favourites from the genre. Their continually evolving programme covers numbers by artists like Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Walter Trout, Beth Hart, John Bonamassa and Dusty Springfield. ‘Blues Reviewed’ is fronted by Colette Cassin, recognised for her rich textured voice. Mark Johnson, guitar/vocals, has been playing the blues since he was very young and not many do it better. Derek Head on sax is very well-known in the area and his skill as a sax player is greatly respected. Alex McCracken on keyboards adds his wizardry to the mix and is now very much part of the band. Pete Lamb on bass adds the bottom end and new member Martin Cleverly is on drums. “We are very grateful to ‘Blues Reviewed’ for generously offering to come back to Cherhill. St. James is proving to be a great venue for music and we hope once again to get a capacity audience for another ‘rave in the nave’. As numbers are limited to 140, we would urge people to buy tickets early to avoid disappointment,” says Shauna Bodman, who chairs the fund-raising committee. “The money raised goes towards the restoration and ongoing maintenance of the church, parts of which date back to the 12th Century, and which today provides an increasingly important community role.” The ticket price of £10 includes a glass of fizz on arrival (available from 7.00pm). There will be a bar all evening. The band will perform a number of sets starting at 7.30pm. To obtain tickets or further details about the event, please call 07763 581688.

Forces Charity Signposting Event by Jim Sutton

Wednesday 8th June Calne Town Hall 10am-5pm Jim Sutton who works as a volunteer at the Community Hub in Calne has organised an event to help veterans and serving personnel in the local community. “I feel that although the charities are doing great work they are not necessarily reaching out to all the veterans who really need their help. In order to address this and in line with the Armed Forces Community Covenant I have organised a Forces Charity Signposting Day

at Calne Town Hall on Wednesday 8th June where veterans/serving personnel who require support/ advice can come and find out what some of these charities are able to offer and have face to face time with the charity reps. In addition to the charities I am also hoping that representatives from Wiltshire Council will also attend this event to offer advice relating to housing and welfare issues. I believe this would also be a great opportunity to raise awareness within the local civilian community and surrounding areas and would like to encourage members of the general public to attend as well.”

Need help, support or advice and not sure who to contact This event is a great opportunity to meet with Charity Representatives from several Forces Charities. Veterans, Serving Forces Personnel and the General Public are all welcome to attend REFRESHMENTS WILL BE AVAILABLE

JIM’S STORY: I enlisted in the Royal Air Force at the age of 26 and completed 24 years’ service during which time I served in a number of locations in the United Kingdom including RAF Lyneham, Brize Norton and Kinloss. I also obtained worldwide operational experience by participating in detachments and operations in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Falkland Islands and the Middle East including two tours to Iraq. In 2006 and 2010 I sustained Brain Injuries which ultimately lead to me being medically discharged in Aug 2013. During my transition to civilian life I received very little support from the Royal Air Force and eventually received support and guidance from the Army with regard to Career transition. On being Medically discharged I found it overwhelming and really struggled to identify who I could go to for help with some of the issues I listed earlier. At this time I was struggling with psychological issues which were having a massive impact on my family. Again I really didn’t know who could help with this but after several months I was advised to approach Help for Heroes. This proved to be a very positive move and they not only helped me to recover psychologically but also gave me the confidence to engage in voluntary work in the community and focus on the things I can do and not the things that I struggle with. I also received much needed help from the Royal Air Force Association to sort out my Armed Forces and War Pensions. I have met numerous veterans who have also been medically discharged and it is clear that many of them have had similar difficulties understanding which charity/agency is best placed to provide appropriate support/advice. This is not surprising given the vast number of Forces charities that are now offering various types of help and guidance.

Great Half Marathon for Wiltshire Air Ambulance A TEAM of 54 runners raised vital funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) by taking part in the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday (13 March 2016). Runners included people airlifted by WAA, volunteers and supporters of the charity. The Bath Half was the first half marathon for Shaun Fleming, 57, since an accident at home in Maunsell Way, Wroughton, on 28 September 2014 where he fell 11 feet from a ladder while pruning a conifer tree and which resulted in him being airlifted by WAA. Shaun, who is also a volunteer with WAA, completed the Bath Half in one hour 49 minutes. He said: “It’s an achievement to be back running, I’m pleased with how it went. The Bath Half was better than I thought it would be. The crowds were magnificent.” Running their first half marathon were Jack Edwards, Philip Pollard and Derryn Pollard who are employees in the agricultural team at estate agents, chartered surveyors and auctioneers Symonds & Sampsons in Salisbury, which is supporting Wiltshire Air Ambulance this year. They were joined by Philip and Derryn Pollard’s daughter, Lucy. Jack Edwards, 30, of Symonds & Sampsons, said: “I couldn’t believe how many people turned out to support the runners, it was a really good atmosphere. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a really, really good cause. It relies on donations and in a rural county it’s good to know the air ambulance is there should we need it.” This was the third Bath Half marathon raising money for WAA by Dylan Jones, 22, of Lechlade, Gloucestershire, who was airlifted by WAA in 2012 after suffering catastrophic injuries in a road traffic collision. Dylan ran with nine family members and friends. Dylan said: “I run for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, because without them I wouldn’t be here.” Bananas were provided for the WAA runners by 5ADay Box, based in Coate, near Devizes, and free sports massages were provided by Stuart Greenhow of Fluidmotion Massage in Chippenham. So far the WAA runners have raised £8,000, but sponsorship is still coming in. Kenresa Stratford, Fundraising Coordinator at WAA, said: “We were thrilled to be a part of the Bath Half Marathon again. It’s a really fun event and the atmosphere was electric. Thank you to our amazing team of runners who put in hours of training and raised vital funds to help keep our helicopter flying and saving lives. We’re so grateful for their support.“ To sponsor the runners, go to the charity’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/teams/ WAABathHalf16Team 16

Lasting Power of Attorney What is an LPA? A legal document, enforceable in law, which is very useful for people planning ahead for a time when they may not have the mental ability to look after their own affairs. They are not just for the elderly. How old do you need to be to have a Power of Attorney? You need to be over 18 but then can make one at any age. Accidents and ill health can affect all of us at different times in our lives. Having an LPA in place can give you and your family peace of mind and enable you to get the help you need quickly during a difficult time.

Christina Kenton, is a Wills and Probate Executive at Bevirs Solicitors, a company which has served the Wiltshire community, including Calne and the surrounding villages, for more than 130 years. Here she shares some information about LPAs or Lasting Power of Attorneys.

Are you anxious about a loved one managing their financial affairs? A Trust or Will may be the answer. We can put your mind at rest with solutions to suit your needs.

Q. What sort of LPA do you need? There are two types: - A Property and Affairs LPA- your solicitor can deal with your property and finances. This can be used both when you still have mental capacity to look after your own affairs and when you do not; and - A Welfare LPA- your solicitor can make welfare and health care decisions on your behalf, but only when you lack mental capacity to do so yourself. This could also extend, if you wish, to giving or refusing consent to the continuation of life sustaining treatment. Q. Who should you appoint as Attorney? Any solicitor or attorney must be trustworthy and have relevant skills to make what could be very important decisions. Q. Can you have more than one Attorney? Yes. If you appoint more than one attorney, you can appoint them to either always act together or so that either attorney can act alone. Q. When can the Attorney act? The attorney will only be able to act after the LPA has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Q. How long does an LPA last? It will last until you revoke it (if you have the mental capacity to do so) or failing that until your death (or earlier if ordered by the Court of Protection). Q. What happens if you have not made an EPA and become mentally incapable of looking after your affairs? It may be necessary to get a Court of Protection Order appointing another person to make decisions on your behalf. This is both costly and time consuming. Q. Are there any other forms of Power of Attorney? Yes. There are shorter Powers of Attorney which usually last a year or less when the person who made them becomes mentally incapable of looking after their own affairs. These are usually used to cover short periods.

Celebrating Art in the Garden

An outdoor sculpture exhibition runs from 26 May to 12 June A stunning private garden, a welcoming community run café and inspirational contemporary sculpture make for a magical combination. ‘Celebrating Art in the Garden’, the 2016 sculpture exhibition at West Lavington Manor in Wiltshire has all three. Staged by voluntary organisation The Friends of the Garden, this year’s exhibition forms part of the Rural Touring Arts programme run by Wiltshire charity Pound Arts. The Manor’s gardens extend to over four acres and incorporate 17th century terraces, lawns shaded by magnificent mature trees, a Japanese garden, and extensive borders. Yew topiary frames many spectacular views. These and other spaces magnificently showcase contemporary sculpture. This year 28 artists will be taking part. They include Wiltshire artists Bryan Hanlon and Alison Bowyer. Across the lake a bronze heron by Bryan will hunker down on the deck while Alison’s peacock in fused glass and aluminium wire will stroll along the border. Sculpture by other artists working in stone, ceramic, copper, steel and glass will provide visitors with the opportunity to appreciate how together, contemporary sculpture and landscape create a new dynamic and sense of place. The exhibition is open each day from 11am – 6pm from Thursday 26 May – Sunday 12 June, open

Every Wednesday 1030am CAMEO lunch club at The Salvation Army, Foghamshire, Chippenham, SN15 1HB. Tea or coffee on arrival, speaker, then a two course lunch at 12noon. MEET THE ‘NEW’ AND THE ‘OLD’ WORKING TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK Dan Mayell and Charlie Austin are celebrating success in their apprenticeships during National Apprenticeship Week 2016. The two young men are at opposite ends of the apprenticeship spectrum working for John Williams Heating Services in Chippenham. As Dan starts on his journey through apprenticeship, Charlie has come out the other side. Dan, aged 16 and a former pupil of Melksham Oak Community School has just started his apprenticeship with the company and his working towards his level 2 NVQ in plumbing and heating. He then hopes to move on to level 3 and is also studying at Wiltshire College, Trowbridge. He said: “I’m really enjoying working with this team. I’m working hard and learning all of the time. I’ve been working on pipework, notching and drilling to support a more experienced engineer and learning about personal safety.” Alongside Dan is Charlie, 21, who lives in Chippenham and formerly attended Abbeyfield School in the town. He’s just finished his apprenticeship and is now a fully-qualified heating engineer. Charlie said: “I’ve just changed and the job has just changed a great deal since I started a few years ago. When I started I didn’t even know what a spanner was and now I can fit full systems. I feel I’ve taken a huge jump in quite a short period of time.” Dan and Charlie are just two of the five apprentices who have been nurtured by John and Debbie Williams the co-founders of John Williams Heating Services. Both are advocates of apprenticeships, believing it’s an important route to a fulfilling and successful career. John started his own career as an apprentice. Debbie is also an Employer Apprentice Ambassador with the Skills Funding Agency and gives talks to young people and businesses about the value of apprenticeships. Recently the company, based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham, was chosen to take part in a promotional film by the local campaigns team, Cabinet Office South West, to show the value of apprenticeships. National Apprenticeship Week ran from Monday March 14 to March 18 and the theme for 2016 was ‘an apprenticeship can take you anywhere’. Debbie said: “We believe in apprenticeships and actively recruit young people who want to learn on-the-job. Apprenticeships are widespread. They are available in about 1,500 job roles across 170 industries – so they are a serious route to a fulfilling career and we’re immensely proud to be part of that national statistic.” John Williams Heating Services has won multiple business awards, including recently winning the Enterprising Wiltshire Award for Apprentice Employer of the Year. Enterprising Wiltshire Awards Julia’s House Children’s Hospice scooped a top award at the ‘Enterprising Wiltshire Awards’ at Bowood Hotel in March. The award was for the ‘Most Innovative Service Award for 2016’ Pictured in the photo are Ged Montgomery and Heather Philpotts both from Julia’s House and Ged commented: “we are thrilled and delighted to pick up the award and a big thank you to ‘Wiltshire Council’ and ‘Inspire’ for their fabulous support in recognition of the work of Julia’s House in Wiltshire”. Julia’s House is a children’s hospice charity, dedicated to providing respite care to life-limited children and their families in Dorset and Wiltshire. They provide care at home, in the community and in the hospice near Poole. Having provided this specialist, expert care in Dorset since 2003, they expanded the service into Wiltshire two years ago, initially through a pilot service in the south of the county. The aim is for that service to be fully county-wide by the time their new Wiltshire children’s hospice opens in early 2017 in Devizes. Dan Carter, business development manager for Old Mill Group who presented the award said: “We are delighted Julia’s House are winners of this category. There was stiff competition in this category, but ultimately what they’re doing has never been done before and is a much needed service for Wiltshire families. Old Mill will continue to support this fantastic charity in any way we can.”

MELKSHAM WAITROSE MAIN SPONSOR OF RIVER FESTIVAL Following last year’s spectacularly successful Melksham Food & River Festival, Melksham Waitrose has once again agreed to be the main sponsor of this increasingly popular community event which is held in early September. Chris Smith, manager of the local Waitrose store in Bath Road Melksham said: “I am delighted to be able to help with this fantastic festival; we have supported this event for the last three years. Last year we were thrilled when we were told that between 6,000 and 7,000 people visited the festival. It is such an important event now in Melksham’s calendar, and Waitrose has always been a community based company.” At a recent handing-over ceremony, Chris Smith presented a cheque for £500 to Adrienne Westbrook, chair of the organising committee. Adrienne said: “We would like to thank Waitrose very much for their continuing support for this very exciting event in the Melksham Calendar. Waitrose is our main sponsor, but we would be delighted to welcome other sponsors; companies or individuals could receive publicity for supporting the music, the programme itself, the chilli-eating competition, the proposed raft race, or even the toilets! Please contact me: by phone: 07595 420021 email: info@ melkshamfoodandriverfestival. co.uk or visit the website: www. melkshamfoodfestival.weebly.com “The Food and River Festival will take place over the weekend of 3rd and 4th September at the King George V playing field. “Sunday will be the main food and drinks day, 32

showcasing local producers, as well as providing free entertainment with local bands. We already have 50 stalls and attractions booked, of which 30 are food or drinks based, where visitors can sample and buy a huge array of products. It will be wonderful once again to make use of our beautiful River Avon, as well as raising awareness of the amazing food and drink providers we have in our area.” Brian DeAth, a Wilts & Berks Canal Trust volunteer added: “We are trialling a new format this year, with a Saturday ‘River Adventure’, when events will be centred on the River Avon, including the very popular public boat trips, Try Canoeing and other water based activities. One of these will be an exciting new attraction for 2016. We are inviting teams to bring along a raft which they have designed and made beforehand, they will then launch it, and take part in a race on the river. We already have one organisation which is interested in taking part; we can provide a set of rules, including the maximum dimensions, and suggestions as to where to find suitable materials. If local pubs, clubs and community groups would like to be involved

“There will also be steam launches, divers, trail boats, river trips and other activities continuing on the Sunday, so put the date in your diary now and join in the fun on the weekend of 3rd & 4th of September.” Above: Chris Smith Manager of Melksham Waitrose presents a cheque for £500 to the Melksham Food & River Festival organisers. Local Focus

Local author launches new title at London Book Fair Cherhill author, Alison Knight’s third novel, Rosie Goes to War was part of a high-profile launch of young adult books published by Accent Press at the London Book Fair last month. The story is about fifteen-yearold Rosie who expects to have a boring summer with her grandmother and great aunt, only to be thrown back in time to meet the same women when they were teenagers – in the middle of the London Blitz. This is the first in a series of time-slip adventures featuring Rosie and her eccentric family. ‘I’m really excited to see Rosie Goes to War published at last,’ said Alison, ‘I wanted to show the contrasts between the life of a teenager today and earlier generations. My own family lived in the East End during the Blitz, and I took my inspiration from their experiences. It was great fun to write, and I hope people will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating Rosie’s first story.’ Alison will also be promoting Rosie Goes to War at the Book Zone in the London Film and Comicon in July, and has agreed to visit schools and run workshops with budding young writers. ‘I teach creative writing at Wiltshire College, and love to see students developing their writing talents. If local schools want to book a workshop, they should get in touch.’

Classic Car Run Sunday 22 May 2016

Alison is writing the next book in the series, based in Whitechapel in the late 1880s – at the time when Jack the Ripper was at large. She will again be using her family history as inspiration. ‘One of my greatgreat-grandmothers swore she had an encounter with Jack and survived to tell the tale.’ Further time-slip adventures are planned, as are more romance novels that she writes as Alison Rose. ‘I’ve just returned from Mallorca, where I did research for a story set there, starting in 1939 and ending in the present day. My second book, Rescue Me featured some minor characters that I found too interesting to let go, so the Mallorcan tale will feature two of them.’

Enjoy a fascinating 52-mile route through beautiful Wiltshire countryside with interesting stops finishing at the famous Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum Be one in just a hundred on this special day

Rosie Goes to War is available from WH Smith, Amazon and Accent Press Ltd. For more information or to arrange a workshop, see www.alisonroseknight.com

National Walk to School Week

PUZZLE CORNER

National Walk to School Week takes place from 16th -20th May. The week is promoted by Living Streets who provide classroom packs and ideas for activities to encourage more children to safely walk to school. It’s estimated that only half of 7-10 year olds do the recommended one hour exercise per day and studies suggest that many children are obese or overweight when they leave primary school. Encouraging children to walk to school not only helps them to stay trim, but also reduces the risk of heart conditions and other diseases in later life, and means that they are more alert in the classroom on a day-today basis. Walking is also better for the environment as it reduces congestion and pollution. Fewer cars and parking outside schools also means there is a reduced chance of accidents and injuries. Many children find it fun to walk to school with their parents or friends and look out for particular things along their route. Observation sheets are available which provide an opportunity to tick off things seen along the way, such as a church, shop, or petrol station. For those who can’t walk to school with a relative, being part of a walking-bus may offer a solution. Children walk with volunteers in a group along a designated route, dropping off passengers at schools along the way.

Why Take Your Baby or Toddler Swimming? Because it’s educational, potentially life-saving and really good fun!

S

WIMMING is one of the few things your baby can do from birth, and as well as being fantastic for them, it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too. In water, little ones are able to exercise every muscle in their body – including some they wouldn’t yet find on land. Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is on strengthening the bond between parent and child, swimming from birth is also excellent for their development. During their first year of life, a baby’s brain grows more rapidly than at any other time, with every movement they make helping to strengthen this growth. Despite looking gentle, swimming provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn, aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness while improving eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus for parents!

A weekly swim session will also help them develop physically, emotionally and mentally. For instance, right from the word go they’ll be learning to respond to voice commands, which is fantastic stimulation for a newborn baby’s brain. Water familiarisation is an equally important aspect. Babies who swim on a regular basis develop a respect for water and can be taught potentially lifesaving skills. And these skills kick in from remarkably early on, proven by the fact that Water Babies pupils as young as two have saved themselves from drowning. So with so many good reasons to take your little one swimming, how do you make sure you choose the right baby swim school? Choosing a swim school Teaching babies to swim from birth is a skilled profession, requiring considerable in-depth knowledge. However there is fairly limited regulation, so it’s vital that as a parent you take the time to make a well informed choice about which classes you choose to take your little one to. Training Always check the qualifications and experience the teachers of the swim school must gain and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good company will be happy to answer your questions! Incredibly, every

40

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2016

Water Babies teacher could have trained as a private pilot – five times over – in the time it takes them to fully qualify! Structure Some classes will simply get your child used to the pool while others are more structured, with a distinct course progression designed to help them hit key milestones. The Water Babies programme is endorsed by the national governing body for swimming, the ASA, and gives young swimmers the chance to progress into mainstream swimming lessons earlier, enabling them to continue their aquatic adventure as they grow. Fun! Baby swimming is a relaxing and enjoyable activity, perfectly designed to enhance the parent/ child bond. Whichever route you choose, the emphasis should always be on you feeling like you’re evolving at your child’s own pace, and on both of you having fun.

Water Babies classes are available in Calne, Chippenham, Devizes and Trowbridge. For more information, please phone: 01249 248863 Email: bubba@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk

Recipe

Five Greens Lasagne Serves 2-4 depending on appetite Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 20-30 minutes

Lasagne with a Springtime Twist

A bunch of spring onions Few anchovies in oil (optional) 3 cloves of garlic 175g asparagus 175g broccoli 250g frozen peas 150g frozen broad beans Handful fresh mint 150ml single cream 1/2 lemon (zested) 150-200ml vegetable stock 250g cottage cheese 1 packet lasagne sheets (dried or fresh) Parmesan cheese Fresh thyme (or a pinch of dried thyme) METHOD Half fill and boil the kettle. Pour a little oil from the anchovies (if using) into a thick-bottomed saucepan and place on a medium heat. If not using anchovies use a tablespoon of olive oil. Finely slice the spring onions and half of the anchovies and then add them to the saucepan. Crush the cloves of garlic into the pan and fry until soft but not too coloured (burnt garlic is bitter). Snap the woody ends from the asparagus and discard. Finely slice the remaining stems asparagus into 1.5cm pieces. Break the broccoli into small florets of a similar size and add both broccoli and asparagus to the pan with a splash of boiling water from the kettle. 44

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2016

After five minutes, add the peas and broad beans along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well. Roughly chop the mint leaves then add them to the saucepan along with the cream. Grate in the zest of the lemon to taste. When the vegetables are soft, use a potato masher to mash some of the filling to create texture. Add the vegetable stock; bring to the boil before lowering to a simmer and adding half the cottage cheese. Give everything a good stir and cook for a few more minutes. Preheat the oven to 200째C. Take the vegetables off the heat and spoon around one third to a half of the mixture into a deep lasagne dish (approx dimensions 20cm x 15cm). Top with a lasagne sheet and a generous grating of parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers of vegetable and lasagne sheets until you have used all of the filling and then top with a final sheet. I prefer less pasta to filling so use fewer layers but it works as well with three layers. Mix the remaining 250g of cottage cheese with a splash of boiled water and then spread over the lasagne. Sprinkle over the thyme along with another good grating of parmesan and a final drizzle of olive oil. Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until the topping has browned. Serve immediately with a green salad.

Health Matters

Skin and Ink

I

by Emmy Butcher

DON’T know if it is because I am fast approaching the big four zero or because I am finally reaching the rebellious stage my parents told me I never had in my teenage years, but I am seriously considering getting a tattoo. When I was a child it was strictly taboo, something restricted to unsavoury men and unquestionable women, but nowadays being ‘inked’ is much more socially acceptable and is quite common amongst polite society. This is reflected in recent news that Southmead Hospital in Bristol have run a training event for local tattooists to help them spot the early signs of skin cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in the UK. North Bristol Trust are now picking up this innovative idea by holding training for the city’s tattoo artists to help them spot moles or growths on customers that could be potential melanomas, which is the most common skin cancer in adults. Like all cancers, if not recognised and treated early melanoma can be deadly. NHS skin care experts in Bristol have reported that they are treating people who were prompted to visit their GP after unusual marks were spotted by hairdressers, massage therapists and podiatrists. It makes sense to train these professionals to feel confident raising their concerns to their customers and it is hoped that other NHS Trusts will follow Bristol’s lead. The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing mole. In most cases melanomas will be a funny shape or colour and may be larger than your normal moles. If you have a particularly itchy mole or one which bleeds or crusts, it is also a possible sign of melanoma. If you are concerned about a mole you can use the ABCDE checklist which has been developed to help patients identify problem moles before visiting the GP or Practice Nurse.

A = Asymmetry, normal moles are usually evenly round, if your mole is an irregular shape it may be growing at an uneven rate. B = Border, melanomas often have ragged or blurred borders which normal moles don’t usually have. C = Colour – moles come in lots of different colours, but a non-cancerous mole is normally one block colour. If your mole is pigmented with different colours, especially if it is getting darker, it needs to be checked by a GP. Diameter – if you are worried about a mole, get your ruler out and measure it. Melanomas are usually larger than 6mm but you should still be concerned if it is smaller than 6mm and has other indicators from the ABCDE checklist. Finally, E = Elevation. Moles are usually flat against the skin’s surface, but if your mole is elevated (like a bump) and is growing or spreading you should have it checked. The great British summertime is on its way and with it lots of burnt faces and shoulders after we have enjoyed an afternoon of sun, which started with an overcast morning. I am the worst offender for not putting on sunscreen or taking a hat because it ‘doesn’t look that sunny out’. Prevention is better than cure and the best way to prevent all types of skin cancer is to avoid spending too much time in strong sunlight. The chance of developing a melanoma is increased through exposure to UV light. Here in the UK, if we see any, the sun is at its strongest from 11am to 2pm from March to October. Even if it is cool or cloudy it is possible to burn in the middle of the day in the summertime. Checking moles and freckles regularly is advised and if you are worried about any changes to your skin make an appointment to see your GP as soon as possible as its best to get it checked out early. In the meantime, regular readers will know what a big baby I am when it comes to pain! I do quite fancy a tattoo but I doubt many tattooists have access to an anaesthetist to help me cope with getting one. The other problem is that I am quite a flaky person, changing my mind constantly (isn’t it a woman’s prerogative?!) and tattoos are so… well…permanent. Is it still rebellious and cool of someone my very young age, which is still (but only just) under forty, to wear a stick on tattoo? Oh dear…. Chill out for a baby with Reflexology A stressful and hectic lifestyle does absolutely nothing to help a couple conceive a much-wanted baby, says a fertility and maternity reflexologist. Gabriela Slater – fertility and maternity reflexologist based in Wiltshire has been working with many clients having difficulty to conceive for many years. “Fertility issues are a growing problem, I see many clients in my practice that are unable to conceive for various reasons and stress is one of them. When you’re suffering from chronic (on going) stress, the body increases the production of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol and at the same time slows the production of reproductive hormones, making it difficult to conceive” said Gabriela Slater. Emma Sweet 44 years old from Wiltshire, started having reflexology sessions with Gabriela after trying to conceive for 2 years without a success. The mother of 6 years old Josh found it very difficult to be on the fertility emotional roller coaster for all that time. “I decided to try reflexology after receiving a personal recommendation about Gabriela Slater. I consulted her to help me with my fertility problems and booked a course of treatments. The reflexology sessions were so relaxing and calming and I also made some dietary changes as Gabriela advised. To my surprise I found out that after just a few sessions I was pregnant” said Emma. Gabriela offers Fertility Reflexology sessions tailor made to individual needs, she also provides her clients with dietary advice to achieve the best from the food they eat, to support their body to optimise their chance of conception.

Maternity Reflexology can help you with:  Morning Sickness  Back Pain  Water Retention  Overdue Babies  Sleeping Problems  and others... Reflexology for Chippenham, Marlborough and surrounding areas

Gabriela Slater (left), Emma Sweet (right) Now 38 weeks pregnant Emma is awaiting the birth of her second child. “I cannot thank Gabriela enough for all her help and support, I had regular reflexology sessions throughout my pregnancy which helped immensely to reduce my anxiety and stress levels. I would highly recommend Gabriela to anybody who has problems conceiving or needs some ‘me’ time during pregnancy.” Gabriela Slater, who founded her business NuReflexology in 2012 works in Chippenham and Marlborough. She’s a specialist in fertility and maternity reflexology. Reflexology involves applying gentle pressure to the areas of the feet which are a mirror image of the bodily systems, glands and organs. Gabriela works on clients’ feet to reduce stress levels, increase energy levels, stimulate immune system and also improve blood and nutrient supply to all areas of the body. Sunglasses I

T’S really important to wear sunglasses, to protect your eyes against harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays can cause damage to your eyes which could lead to cataracts. These cause clouding of the lens, reduced vision and even blindness if left untreated. Most sunglasses now filter out both UVA and UVB rays. There is a vast array of sunglasses to choose from including prescription sunglasses. There may be a few styles that aren‘t suitable for your prescription but an expert can advise on this. It is important to think about the shape of your face to determine which sunglasses may suit you best. Decide whether your face is heart shaped, round, oval or square, as this will help you work out whether square frames, cat’s eye shape, aviator style, shield, oversized or sport may work best for you. Those with heart-shaped faces will generally find that frames 54

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2016

by Susan Brookes-Morris that are wider at the top than the bottom will look best, whilst oversized, rectangular and angular frames will counterbalance a round face and shallow rectangular frames will visually shorten a long face. Think about your colouring too. What frame colours will suit your skin tone and hair colouring? Those who are fair may find pastel shades or transparent frames most complimentary. Of course you may want to make a statement and choose a bolder frame. Sunglass lenses are usually plastic for increased durability and versatility. Some opticians offer a range of different colour lenses from the more traditional browns and greys to yellows, blues and green. Different tints suit particular circumstances such as green for enhancing contrast and thus being really helpful for those who play sports like golf.

There are a variety of tints too. Dark tints are best for mountains and sea and lightly-tinted for more urban and general environments. All sunglasses reduce brightness, but to reduce glare as well, you need polarized lenses. They are particularly effective when driving, skiing or fishing as they block glare increase contrast. As with all spectacles you have the choice of designer brands such as Ray Ban, Ted Baker and Oakley or non-designer. There is an element of fashion and celebrity endorsement too. Check out the latest looks at your local optician or fashion chain. It’s always helpful to seek the assistance of a store professional to help you select the most suitable sunglasses, particularly to check that the specification will offer you the correct protection but also to advise on aesthetics.

Gardening

Biological warfare!

I

’M a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison 56

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2016

based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slugeaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are

watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

A new season, brings a new friend

S the better weather approaches, this is often the time equestrians decide to buy a new horse. Be it their only horse or adding to their herd; Hale Equine Veterinary Practice, based in Chippenham offer two levels of Pre Purchase Examinations (PPE) to make sure you get off to a good start. It is advisable to have a horse or pony checked before you buy, for your peace of mind and also the seller’s; ensuring you are investing your hard earned money wisely. The PPE is there to help you buy the right horse for your desired use, a horse that is required to compete with an adult rider, at a high level would have very different demands put on them to one that is the intended use is a gentle ride with a child on their back twice a week. Anna Quiggin has provided the following link, the full explanation of what the PPE contains and does not contain can be found on the BEVA website - https:// www.beva.org.uk/_…/documents/1ppe-guidancenotes.pdf.

Anna offers us a brief guide for some of the tests you can expect from Hale Equine. • THE FIVE STAGE PPE A full and comprehensive examination. STAGE 1 – We examine the eyes in a darkened room, both inside the eye and the structures around it. A thorough exam of the mouth, (although a full examination with a gag is not a prerequisite for the PPE). Examination of lungs and heart using a stethoscope. A horse check for lumps, bumps (e.g. sarcoids) and assess conformation. All legs including joints and tendons; and assess the feet, hoof quality and conformation. An examination of the back for any sign of discomfort. STAGE 2 - Watch the horse move in a straight line in walk and trot. Assessing soundness, and looking for any abnormalities in gait. Backed and circled tightly; allowing neurological checks. Flexion tests on all limbs (although again, it isn’t a prerequisite) on a safe firm area such as a carpark, we like to lunge the horse as a good test of the horse’s soundness. STAGE 3 – View the horse exercised, ideally under saddle, can be lunged if they haven’t been backed. Walk, trot and canter on both reins, if possible listen to the horse at gallop. To assess breathing and heart rate. STAGE 4 – Examine the horse in the stable, draw the identification chart, check the microchip and take a blood sample (vendor permitting). The bloods are stored for 6 months and can subsequently be tested for sedatives or pain killers should a problem arise with the horse soon after purchase. We listen to the horse’s heart and lungs again, to check recovery from exercise. STAGE 5 – Final trot up and possibly repeat flexions, if concerns have arisen. Horses which may stiffen up after exercise with arthritis, for example, can be picked up at this stage. After these stages the vet will form a “risk assessment” of the horse, based on their findings. We always aim to put best and worst case scenarios forward for any possible problem identified, to help you make an informed decision whether to proceed with purchase or not. We are unable to comment on behavioural issues or whether the horse is a suitable match for its rider, however, if the horse was particularly difficult

60

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2016

to examine we are likely to mention it. Generally, we like to have you, the purchaser, present so we can discuss findings with the horse present. If this isn’t possible, we can still do the PPE and telephone you with our findings afterwards. We then complete a PPE certificate and mail it to you with our findings. Hale Equine are always happy to discuss these further if required. Some limitations of the vetting are outlined on the guide, link below - https://www. beva.org.uk/_…/documents/1ppe-guidance-notes. pdf • THE TWO STAGE PPE – This examination includes stages one and two outlined above. Before a two stage PPE we ask you sign a waiver, outlining the areas we will not be examining. The PPE is an important start to your new partnership, offering peach of mind to you as a new horse owner and enabling you to have the best start with your new addition. Hale Equine Practice can be contacted on 01249 653561 or alternatively via email if you prefer enquiries@halevethospital.co.uk.

Hot Hatch

LTHOUGH there were several cars that could be called ‘hatchback’ produced from the 1930’s on, the term ‘hatchback’ didn’t appear until about 1970. The first British mass produced hatchback was the Austin Maxi made from 1969 to 1981the hottest version being the 1750 HL with twin SU carbs.

The first cars recognised as a ‘hot hatch’ were the 1971 Autobianchi A112 Arbarth, a pretty hideous looking car with a 1 litre engine producing 58bhp and the slightly better looking 1974 Simca 1100 Ti with a 1294cc engine and 82bhp. In 1976 along came the Renault 5 Alpine with 93bhp from 1400cc and 2 months later the iconic Golf GTi was introduced with 1600cc 110bhp or 1800cc and 115bhp. Over the years I have managed to drive most of the well known hot hatches and at one time I even owned a Golf GTi Mk2 for a month or two. I think I paid about £500 for it and had a couple of months hooligan use of it before selling it on. At the time they were in production most of the past hot hatches were a hoot to drive. They weren’t too complicated and had more than enough power for some serious fun combined with practicality. The notable ones that spring to mind as well as the Golf GTi are the Peugeot 205 GTi and the Ford Escort XR3i of which we had shed loads through the garage for service or repair.

I have owned several sporty cars over the years including a 1965 Mini Cooper ‘S’ and a 1971 Capri 3000 GT that were only a few years old at the time. The only hot hatch I owned apart from the Golf GTi was a 2001 Renault Clio 172 Sport with 2000cc and 172bhp. It wasn’t strictly mine as it was registered to ‘R’ but I regularly got to drive it and it was an absolute hoot as long as ‘R’ wasn’t in the car with me chastising me for using her fuel with unnecessary rapid acceleration. It was one of those cars that tempted you to swivel your cap on the wrong way round and just let rip. Although I never measured it, it was supposed to be good for 0 to 60 in 7.2 seconds and about 140 mph. Road holding was limpet like and was great on a twisty road firing between one apex and another. We had it for nearly 9 years and put on about 50k during that time without a single glitch apart from normal servicing and the usual bits like exhaust, brakes and tyres. None of the parts were expensive and apart from a firm ride was very practical to live with. When we finally sold it I had a mind to buy a newer version but by then we had the BMW Z4 as our sporting car and you can only own and use so many cars. I did consider using the old Clio as just a track day car but the number of times it would have been used would have been limited by time constraints plus it would have had to be maintained in roadworthy

condition, something which I had no desire to do. ‘R’ now owns a Peugeot 107 1ltre 3 cylinder, it’s very economical, quite fun to drive if you keep the revs up but she’ admits it’s not in the same league as the Clio. Over the years the power and performance of various manufacturers’ hot hatches has vastly increased. Before I settled on buying the Z4 I did consider a Renault Megane 275 with a turbo charged 2litre engine and 275bhp. At the time it was the fastest hot hatch available but it was still not as quick as the Z4 and also wasn’t a convertible which was top of my desire list. Things have moved on a pace in the power arms race and now the most powerful hot hatch is the Mercedes A45 AMG with 376bhp from a 2 litre turbo charged engine but at nearly 40k is not cheap. Ford have just released a new Focus RS with 345bhp and 4 wheel drive at under 30k; much cheaper than the Merc, Audi S3 and the Golf GTi. The other advantage of the Ford is that it is only available with a manual gearbox and although slightly slower than the auto shift twin clutch system fitted to many rivals’ cars it won’t be ruinously expensive to repair if it goes wrong. I haven’t driven any of these modern, supercar eating hot hatches, but if I was up for spending 30k (which I’m not) it would probably be on the Ford as it is up there with the best and about 10k cheaper. It is all a bit silly though as there is no hope of using those stupendous power outputs on the road. If I really wanted another hot hatch I would buy a 3 year old Clio 200 Sport for about 8k and have as much fun as could possibly be had on the road without breaking the bank or finishing in clink.

Breakfast on the beach

he Church of Mensa Christi (Latin: table of Christ) on the shores of the Sea of Galilee is one of my favourite places in the Holy Land. It’s a church built on the beach, around a flat rock, said to be the place where the risen Jesus cooked and ate a breakfast with his disciples. When I have taken pilgrims there, we have a paddle in the water on the beach and imagine the account from John Ch. 21. John tells us that seven disciples were in a boat fishing a hundred yards away from the shore, early in the morning. They saw a figure in the distance but didn’t know it was Jesus. He called out to them and told them to put their nets out on the right hand side of the boat and when they did this the nets were filled with fish (John tells us 153 fish to be precise!). On realising that the catch of fish was miraculous, the disciples looked out at the figure again. Peter saw that it was Jesus! He untied the coat wrapped around him, jumped into the water and swam to Jesus saying, “It is the Lord!” The other disciples dragged the net back to shore in the boat and found that Jesus had already prepared a charcoal fire ready to cook breakfast. That morning they ate fish and bread together. After the meal, Jesus asked Peter the same question three times: “Do you love me?” Some have suggested that the three questions correspond to the three denials of Peter a few days earlier. With each question, Jesus was stressing to Peter that he was truly and utterly forgiven. The third time Peter was asked, he was hurt, and said, “Lord you know all things, you know that I love you”. How can any of us prove that we truly love someone? A story goes that one night in New York, on Broadway, the great star Mary Martin was preparing to go on stage as she had a thousand times before, in Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific. Just before she went on stage a note was handed her. The letter was signed by Oscar Hammerstein who was that evening on his death bed.

The note was short. It simply said: “Dear Mary, A bell's not a bell until you ring it. A song’s not a song until you sing it. Love in your heart is not put there to stay. Love isn’t love till you give it away.” When the play was over the cast rushed backstage and asked her, “What happened? We’ve never seen you perform that way before?” Mary read to them Hammerstein's note and said, “Tonight, I gave my love away.” I can hear Jesus' words to Peter in that: “Peter do you love me? Feed my sheep.” In other words, Peter, you know the song. Sing it! Peter, you’ve got the bell. Ring it! Peter, love isn’t love till you give it away.” Peter was forgiven and now he had a job to do. Expressing love for Jesus would, for Peter, be a call to serve others and help them know Jesus’ love for themselves. Peter had a new job of being a fisher of men, not a fisher of fish. Jesus had given his love away over three years of teaching, miracles, washing feet, touching the leper, facing the cruelty of our world and being crucified. Now, it was Peter’s turn to continue this work. After the breakfast on the beach, the baton of love was handed to Peter. It would be passed on to the other disciples, then to hundreds of followers, then to thousands and now hundreds of millions. It is a message of love that continues to change the world. Apparently, six out of seven of Snow White’s dwarfs weren’t happy! Most people want happiness in life. I suspect the only way to improve our lives and find real contentment is to be like Peter: forgiven for his mistakes and owning a purpose for the future. A Good Read The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse

.................................. This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages. However readers won’t be disappointed as Mosse once again takes us back to the South of France and the area in the Pyrenees which provided the haunting backdrop to her weightier Labyrinth novels. It is 1933, and an Englishman visits a book antiquarian in France with a strange manuscript written in the now extinct Occitan language of the region. The antiquarian is curious and wants to know how an Englishman would have it in his possession. Slowly, the foreigner tells his story. In 1928, with Europe still recovering from the aftermath of World War 1, Freddie is recovering from an illness. Still struggling to come to terms with the death of his older brother George, his doctor suggests a trip to France where the mountain air in the south may help his recovery. He is consumed by grief and guilt over George’s death and welcomes the opportunity to visit the country where his beloved brother died. A car crash during a storm in the mountains sees him stranded in the oddly deserted-looking village of Nulle. He finds lodgings and the next day is invited to attend the Fete de Sainte-Etienne, a celebration of the village’s past. It is here that he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful mysterious woman. Mosse cleverly allows us to see the psychological effects of grief. As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medieval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are condemned to repeat? 68

Cloudberry Castle: Ballet School Secrets by Janey Louise Jones

.......................................................................................... This is the second book in the Cloudberry Castle series. The first introduced ballet-mad Katie and her family. Following the death of their elderly neighbour the Mackenzie family find themselves the owners of Cloudberry Castle. The crumbling building could be beautiful and the book follows Katie and her family as they raise enough money to turn it into a new ballet boarding school. At the start of this second book the school is about to open. Katie’s mother was a dancer with the New York City Ballet and has spent the last few months planning classes, ordering costumes, and holding auditions, whilst her dad has been hard at work transforming the rooms into ballet studios, classrooms, and dormitories. When September arrives Katie is in heaven. She gets to dance all day and soon makes friends with some of the other girls. Her mum is planning to stage Sleeping Beauty at the end of the year and Katie would love to play Princess Aurora. However, one of the new students, Leo, seems to be about to put a dampener on things. She arrives with a private chauffeur and pony and clearly thinks she is better than everyone else. Katie begins to worry that she is not as good at ballet as she thought she was. Can she win the role of Princess Aurora? Combined with a discovery in the grounds of Cloudberry Castle which may well reveal some longhidden secrets, this novel is perfect for a young ballet fan. Katie is a very likeable narrator and Jones is an engaging writer. This is aimed at readers aged 8+ and its 141 pages are split into 28 manageable chapters for young readers looking to gain more confidence.

Sharing Stories

D

by Kate Duggan

ID you know that May is National Share a Story Month? It’s an annual celebration of storytelling, and this year’s theme is A Place for Stories. The idea is that stories aren’t just for bedtime; they can be shared anywhere – under a tree, during a picnic, in a tent, during a train journey… You can read a book to someone, or pass it on, listen to an audio book together, or retell a story you know by heart. You could even make up a story. Whether you have five minutes spare this month, or a couple of hours, here are a few ideas to get you started sharing stories. • Organise a storytelling session in a local café. • Throw a teddy bear’s picnic and ask children to bring their favourite bear related books. • Ask your local shop whether you can have a small corner to use as a free library. Invite people to bring old books in, and borrow others. • Organise a book swap with friends, or through a school. You could even turn this into a fundraising event, by charging people a small amount for entrance, or for a cup of tea and slice of cake. • Build a den, lay down a blanket and read stories with your family.

Fancy treating yourself, or someone else, to a new book this month? Here are a few of our favourites …

• Download the ePub and Kindle apps for your Smartphone, so that you can read ebooks when you’re out and about.

Under 5s: Whoa! Joe by Rosie Godfrey is a beautifully illustrated book about a three year old’s imagination, and the adventures it takes him on. It even comes with a story CD included.

• Write a book with your child. They could draw pictures, or you could cut ones out from old magazines.

5-8: Daisy and the Trouble with Life by Kes Gray. Daisy is always getting into trouble and this story is no exception. She’s grounded, but why? And why does she keep rushing off to the loo? 9 upwards: The Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Adventures are aplenty in this fantastical story of a girl called Lyra Belacqua and her ‘dæmon’ companion, Pan. Teenage: Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman won a National Book Award last year, and it’s not difficult to see why. A moving, yet funny, book, Challenger Deep explores the world of a teenager battling with schizophrenia.

Adult: The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick. Follow Arthur on his quest to discover the origin of the charms on his late wife’s bracelet. A hugely enjoyable read.

Jo Deacon

Why? Seen from an orbiting station in space, our world seems a tranquil and beautiful place. An orb in the vastness, she sails lone and proud, belying what’s happening beneath shrouding Cloud. I do not pretend to know what’s going on. All I know is things have gone very wrong. I wish I could take the whole world by the hand and ask all the questions I don’t understand. Like – why do you fight? Why do you make war? Surely there’s room on this planet for all? Why try to rule all? Why thirst for world power? Will all this keep on till the earth’s dying hour? Does intolerance dictate we kill one another? Why can’t everyone live at peace with their “brother”? Why bomb, riot, maim for a cause undefined, and let children grow with such hate in their minds? Share desert and plain with your sister and brother, stop killing to “own” what belongs to another. We all pray to someone, we share the same God, he has many names but he’s still the same “Lord”! Religion, how many wars fought in thy name, will cause anguish and death – yet continue the same? Why can’t leaders pause in the midst of their strife – take a look at the waste and reflect on their life? To see ruins and wastelands their “war toys” laid bare. Then plan for the future with hope not despair?

WHY?
