Wiltshire Air Ambulance Christmas Draw
A
TOP prize of £3,000 is on offer in Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Grand Christmas Draw. The annual raffle raises much needed funds for the charity’s lifesaving helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS). Last year it raised just under £40,000. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Our Grand Christmas Draw is a vital source of funds in helping us to raise the £3.25 million a year we need to keep flying and saving lives. It’s thanks to people supporting and raising funds for us that we can be there for patients when they need us most. One of the innovations we introduced last year was to carry blood on board the aircraft and Rapid Response Vehicle, enabling our Critical Care Paramedics and Doctors to give pre-hospital blood transfusions to seriously ill and injured patients. In the first year of carrying blood our crews gave blood transfusions, on average, to three patients per month.” The Grand Christmas Draw tickets cost £1 each and there are ten tickets per book. As well as the £3,000 top prize, the second prize is £500, the third prize is £100 and there are five consolation prizes of £50. To obtain Grand Christmas Draw tickets please call Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s charity team on 01380 739453. Players must be aged 16 or over. All entries for the draw must be received by Monday 2 January 2017 with the draw taking place on 9 January 2017. For more information visit: www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Double glazing firm moves to bigger site as part of south west expansion AFTER nearly 50 years in the town, a Chippenham double glazing firm is moving to new headquarters as part of an ambitious expansion plan. DL Windows is relocating its HQ to Calne and has put it familiar showroom in Malmesbury Road, Chippenham up for sale. The team are moving to the Porte Marsh Industrial Estate in Calne as the current Chippenham site is no longer fit for purpose. The change is part of a larger expansion plan which will include opening another Chippenham town centre showroom over the coming months and also further showroom in Yeovil, Somerset which is already the home of sister company DL Group. DL’s managing director Malcolm Lyus said: “As a result of our current success we have out-grown our current premises so we are now going to open a new preinstallation and showroom facility in Calne, which is currently being equipped and should be operational soon.” Mr Lyus, who is well known locally for helping to guide Chippenham Town FC to Wembley as club chairman in 2000, added: “In conjunction with this, a new high-tech showroom containing all the last technology is due to open early January 2017 in Chippenham town centre.”
A family fun day was held at at Marden Court Residential Home in Calne, in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Organiser Vicky Tigwell and some of the staff and residents went to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance headquarters to meet the pilot, air paramedics and see the helicopter in action and to present a cheque for the £1448 raised. 12

Wiltshire volunteer supports national campaign
Wiltshire volunteer is hoping her own example will encourage others to lend their support to a worthy cause.
Despite running a successful business, Carol BartlettLove often spends two mornings each week helping at the Barnardo’s shop in Pewsham, Chippenham. She has been supporting the charity since April and has already donated approximately 120 hours of her own time so far this year. Now she is sharing her story in advance of national UK Charity Week which runs from December 5th-11th. Carol, from Calne, was a teaching assistant at a nursery school for more than ten years before setting up her own business ‘Up To You with a Cherry on Top’ which creates recycled gifts. The 52-year-old said: “My business is home-based which means it can sometimes be quite solitary, so I wanted to do something which would allow me to meet more people. “My previous job involved working with children so I was keen to support a charity with a similar interest, and the Barnardo’s shop in Pewsham always looked like a friendly place.” It was Carol’s first time as a volunteer and she had never worked behind a till before, but she soon settled in and now enjoys every aspect of the role. She said: “I love it here. I’ve learned so much and I look forward to coming in every week. “I like talking to people and I like listening to people, and I particularly like getting to know some of the regular customers who always say ‘hello’. “The staff are fantastic and make you feel at home, and we always laugh together.
“I’d definitely recommend volunteering to anyone with some spare time to help others.” Barnardo’s Manager Sue Coles said: “We are so lucky to have Carol as a volunteer. She’s so bubbly and friendly “We all have a great time together but more support is always welcome.” The Barnardo’s shop in Pewsham is open MondaySaturday 9am-5.30pm and Sundays from 10am-4pm, and welcomes donations of good-quality clothes, books, toys, games, accessories and bric-a-brac. Call (01249) 445524. Locally, Barnardo’s is responsible for Redland Nursery in Chippenham, a visitor centre and family support work at HMP Erlestoke, and a short breaks service and positive activities club for disabled children and young people across the county. ILTSHIRE Air Ambulance’s Lottery and Superdraw have achieved a major milestone – by generating £1 million in income. In addition, the number of people playing the charity’s award-winning lotteries - just over 35,500 - is an all-time high. As well as raising money to keep the charity’s helicopter flying and saving lives, members who play the Superdraw can win up to £25,000. One of the latest winners of the Superdraw, Sharon Pottinger-Jones, of Highworth, near Swindon, scooped £22,439, less than four months after she joined. She has made a donation from her winnings to Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). Mrs Pottinger-Jones said: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is such a good cause. It serves the county and one day anyone of us might need it. I couldn’t believe I had won the Superdraw prize, I would encourage people to take part.” Earlier this year the charity won the Lottery Operator of the Year at The Lotteries Council Awards 2016. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “We’d like to thank Sharon for making a donation from her Superdraw winnings to Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Our lotteries are our biggest, single source of income and it’s incredible to think that, simply by signing up and paying from £1 a week, our lottery members are raising enough to cover almost a third of our running costs. “Wiltshire is a big county with a small population, so to have reached a combined membership of over 35,000 across the Lottery and Superdraw is a fantastic achievement. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our lottery members for their support and also to the lottery canvassers who work hard to spread the word about our award-winning lotteries. We’d love even more people to sign up, as it really gives us a secure, reliable income that enables us to keep flying and saving lives – and of course everyone who joins is in with a chance of winning!” Each chance in WAA’s regular lottery costs £1 a week and it has a top prize of £1,000 a week. Each chance in the Superdraw costs an additional £1 a week. Players of WAA’s lotteries must be 16 years of age or over. For more information about the lotteries go to www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

11th Hour Escape Rooms
I
F you are looking for a way to spend some time locally that is a little bit different - why not try the 11th Hour Escape Rooms! Located just 10 minutes from Calne in Bromham, this is the only escape game in the area, and is suitable for both novices and experienced players alike. Based on an ingenious music theme, you have just one hour to escape from the locked room. To do this you have to solve various puzzles to open locks which lead you to further clues and eventually to the key to the Escape Room door. Hosts Tim and Lizzie are there (behind the scenes) to support you throughout and make the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable. There are many surprises and twists and turns to keep you constantly on your toes and racking your brains.
The Town Crier Te
This a great way to celebrate a special occasion, team building or just to treat yourself! The hour just flies by as you look for clues and solve the puzzles - there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction when you open a combination lock with a number that you have derived from what at first appeared to be quite random information. Although the Town Crier team of Victoria, Richard and Carlene (see picture above) did not escape in the 60 minutes, we had a really great time and would thoroughly recommend it. Tim and Lizzie are working on new themes for 2017 and we can't wait to try it again soon. The Escape Room is open throughout December and most of the Christmas holiday period - check out the website for more details, availability and how to book www.11thHourEscapeRooms.co.uk There is also a facebook page www.facebook.com/ 11thHourEscapeRooms (Prices start from ÂŁ13 per person) 26

New dancewear shop opens in time for festive season S
Latest news from DanceWear
EAMSTRESS Clare Boldon has taken her talents to a new level by opening a shop – DanceWear - in her home town of Chippenham. Clare, aged 42, is well known in Wiltshire for her beautifully crafted bespoke tutus and dance costumes made for dancing schools in and around the town. She’s now taken the step of opening up her first shop at 11b New Road, Chippenham. She said: “We’re stocking everything from leotards, cropped tops and hoodies, to ballet, tap and latin shoes. We can also announce we are the exclusive local stockist for Pineapple, Bloch and Mirella fashion wear – as often girls like to wear something pretty to class, as well as their basic dance uniforms.” Clare is also a trained shoe fitter as it’s notoriously difficult to get shoes which fit well for dance. At DanceWear, students will be able to try before buying. The team are also offering consultations with any organisation involved with dance which may want to discuss larger orders of basic dance uniforms or clothing for gymnastics and musical theatre productions in schools or colleges. With a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering, Clare worked for many years for a waste management company in London before moving to Lacock. Eight years ago, when her fouryear-old daughter, Charlotte,
Clare Boldon who has opened her first shop – DanceWear – in Chippenham offering a range of dance, gymnastic and musical theatre uniforms, costume and footwear. announced she wanted to be a dancer, Clare began to combine her structural engineering skills with creative design to make her child dance costumes. Other parents were so impressed they started to ask Clare to do the same for their children. Since then Clare has provided fabulous tutus and costumes for hundreds of customers nationwide. Clare said: “We will continue transforming people’s ideas into costumes - as well as altering existing ones - but now customers can visit in a beautiful
environment instead of a small room! Orders are being accepted from February 2017 onwards.” She also explained the spur to expand the business came when her daughter was accepted as one of only ten dance pupils nationwide at the Tring School for the Performing Arts. Clare said: “Charlotte is doing so well – she performed with the English National Ballet in The Nutcracker last winter – but since she is away from home during term time, my family and friends encouraged me to go ahead with the shop.” Dancewear Chippenham 11b New Road, Chippenham Tel: 01249 248848

d Food Banks What they need
Donating to food banks is a worthwhile thing to do. The Trussell Trust say that a simple box of food can make a big difference as foodbanks help prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. December is generally the busiest month of the year for foodbanks. If you are organising a local collection, it’s best to get in touch with your local foodbank and ask then what they need most. All donated goods must be in date. A typical food parcel provides at least three days nutritionally balanced food. It consists of non perishable tinned and dried items. Usually included are: • • • • • •
Donation Bin at The Town Crier 5b Wood Street Calne
Cereal Soup Pasta Rice Pasta sauce Beans
• Tinned meat • Tinned vegetables • Tea/coffee • Sugar • Biscuits
Some foodbanks provide pet food too and for families there may be some sweets or chocolate for the children. None food items such as toiletries, nappies, toilet roll and sanitary products are also often welcomed and some will try to give gifts at Christmas too. There are collection points at many supermarkets. If it’s easier you can arrange to make a one off financial donation or a give a regular amount instead. Find out more at: www.trusselltrust.org

Glastonbury Founder Michael Eavis CBE to open local marathon walk
T
HE Forever Friends Appeal are excited to announce that legendary Glastonbury festival founder Michael Eavis CBE has become an Ambassador for their popular annual fundraising event, the “Walk of Life”. The Forever Friends Appeal are the primary charity for Bath’s Royal United Hospital who raise vital funds for all wards and departments at the hospital, including their major RUH Cancer Care Campaign, raising a minimum of £8.5 million towards an exceptional new Cancer Centre at the RUH. In 2016 the Walk of Life celebrated its 10th birthday and saw over 350 walkers take part to celebrate the lives and memories of their loved ones. In past years the walk has always offered walkers the choice between a full 21 mile route, or shorter 12 and 9 mile distances. The Appeal are now extremely excited to announce that new for 2017, the event’s full route will be extended from 21 miles to a full 26.2 miles – a marathon walking event! Nic says, “The Walk of Life has grown from strength to strength over the past 11 years and it’s been very exciting (and emotional!) to watch it grow in numbers. Together with the Appeal’s Events Team, we now want to offer people the option to challenge themselves to achieve something truly inspirational – a marathon 26.2 mile route! We immediately contacted Michael Eavis to ask whether he would consider becoming an Ambassador for the event; a wellrespected local man who himself has achieved inspirational success

with Glastonbury Festival over the years!” Michael says, “The Royal United Hospital in Bath has always been close to my heart, having myself received excellent treatment there in past years. When Nic approached me with her story and asked if I would consider becoming an Ambassador for the Walk Of Life I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Since 2005 the festival has supported the Appeal with various fundraising activities, including our preGlastonbury staff annual skittles match. I am now looking forward to meeting walkers in May at the start of the 2017 Walk of Life and hope that this coming year will be the best year yet!” The 2017 Walk of Life will take place on Saturday 13th May 2017. As Ambassador for the event, Michael will be attending the start of the event’s new route in Bishops Cannings to meet and greet walkers, before joining them as they begin their walk along the Kennet and Avon canal. The event’s new 26.2 mile route will this year start at The Crown Inn Pub, situated within the picturesque village of Bishops Cannings, just outside of Devizes. Walkers will start from The Crown Inn at 8am to travel along the canal, via Bradford on Avon to end at the iconic Holburne Museum in Bath. For those who don’t fancy a full marathon, walkers can also opt to walk a shorter 10 mile route in the afternoon – from Bradford on Avon to Bath. Walkers can choose to dedicate

Christmas Wrapping tips and techniques for beautiful gifts
A
d
RE you one of those people who leave all their wrapping until Christmas Eve and end up using a bit of birthday paper because you run out of Christmas wrapping? Why not plan ahead and take a little more time this year. It can be really satisfying to see all your gifts looking beautiful under the tree and receive lots of compliments when you hand them out.
There are lots of different types of wrapping available including paper, bags, huge sacks, tubs and boxes. You can also get lots of accessories from craft shops to add a unique twist. Here are some tips and suggestions to help:-. • If using wrapping paper, measure it first and trim off the excess. Decide how much you need by wrapping a ribbon around the gift and then laying the ribbon on the paper and cutting it to that size. Alternatively, use a tape or ruler. • If your gift consists of a number of boxes try making a tower and wrapping ribbon round the whole. Even if your gifts don’t come in boxes, you could put them in some to make wrapping easier. This is also the art of disguise and can create an element of fun. Even those who think they know what you are buying them will start to wonder. • If you have trouble cutting gift wrap in a straight line, look for brands that have grid lines on the 36
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
reverse. If you can’t get these, mark the paper where you need to cut it and then fold it and cut along the crease.
• Keep any off cuts as these may fit smaller gifts. This will also help avoid waste. • When wrapping something soft like a scarf or a jumper, lay the item on a piece of cardboard, This will give you a firm base and mean that you can create clean corners and crisp edges. • For oddly shaped presents, you can create a better effect by padding out unusual angles with tissue paper or using a gift bag. • Try creating a cracker shape for tubular gifts. • If your present has a circular bottom, pleat the paper to get a neat finish. • To avoid getting in a tangle, buy tape which is on a dispenser and use double sided tape where it will help. • Create a wow factor by colour coordinating your wrapping or using the same design for all of a persons presents. You could also use plain wrapping and be creative with patterned tape, add homemade gift tags or create a pocket effect in which you insert a card or other decoration.

Christmas Presents

Oh no … it’s socks!
have never understood why socks get such a bad press as Christmas gifts. I am a sock-lover. ‘So many sock designs, so little time,’ could be my motto. I love to receive them and I love to give them. The trick with socks is finding the perfect pair for the recipient. Think luxurious – Most people buy their own socks as a utility item. So surprise them with a pair of fineknitted Scottish lisle cotton socks, or a silk mix, or a pair of super-soft cashmere bed socks. Think bright – Find the funkiest designs you can which reflect the interests of the recipient. Are they a dog or cat-lover? Do they love gardening, or cooking, or a particular TV series? There are sock designs out there for everyone! Someone gave me a set of fine-art socks last year which included Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Munch’s The Scream! I loved them.

Think high-tech – Know someone with permanently cold feet? Heattech is an innovative Japanese fabric which allows socks to be comfortably thin while trapping body heat in air pockets situated deep in the fibres. Think slipper-socks! – Lots of people don’t like slippers so a pair of snugly slipper-socks with grippy soles might be the perfect gift. So think socks this Christmas. They are most definitely not boring!

Wiltshire Air Ambulance
Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s proposed new home
W
ILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) has submitted detailed plans for its proposed new home on land at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham. The charity was granted Outline Planning Permission for the site in February 2016 by Wiltshire Council and it carried out public consultation on the proposed design of the operations centre in June 2016. The new home will bring together WAA’s helicopter, aircrew and charity team onto one site for the first time. The site at Outmarsh Farm is ideally situated in the centre of Wiltshire as it would allow the helicopter to reach all parts of the county within 11 minutes, as currently happens from its base in Devizes. Kevin Reed, Head of Operations at WAA, said: “The response we had to our proposed plans for our new home during our latest public consultation was overwhelmingly supportive. We currently lease a hangar at police headquarters in Devizes for our helicopter and aircrew and we rent offices in Calne for our charity team. Having a purpose-built facility
will enable us to have full control over our future and bringing together the aircrew and the charity team onto one site will improve our service. “As Melksham does not have an ambulance station, we believe that Wiltshire Air Ambulance would provide enhanced medical cover for the area. Our paramedics are trained in critical care skills and as well as responding in our helicopter, they can also respond to emergencies such as road traffic collisions, heart attacks and strokes in a Rapid Response Vehicle (car).” The design of WAA’s proposed new home is a twostorey building of just under 1,500 square metres. Set helicopter departure and approach routes have been identified to avoid populated areas. In addition, no fly zones will be applied over Bowerhill, Berryfield and Semington, unless the helicopter is attending those areas. The new planning application can be viewed online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk and the reference number is 16/09699/FUL.

Wilber meets inspiring young swimmer
Y
OUNG fundraiser Ciaran Hanks, of Melksham, had two reasons to celebrate visiting Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA).
As well as raising £705 for the charity by completing a swimming challenge, ten-year-old Ciaran won the competition to name WAA’s paramedic bear mascot. Ciaran’s winning suggestion of Wilber is an abbreviation of the words ‘Wiltshire’ and ‘bear’ and he met Wilber for the first time when he visited WAA’s Operations Centre in Devizes on Monday (24 October 2016). Ciaran said: “I was excited when I heard I had won the competition to name Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s mascot. I enjoyed meeting Wilber – he’s funny!”
“Me and my husband, Jason, are so proud of Ciaran. He came up with the idea of swimming the equivalent of the English Channel to raise money. Six months ago he was struggling to complete a length without stopping because of his asthma, but through his perseverance and dedication he is now a different swimmer. We’d like to thank everyone who supported and donated to Ciaran’s challenge.”
Above: Ciaran Hanks with Stephanie Millward after finishing his swimming challenge at Trowbridge Swimming Pool. Below: Ciaran Hanks presenting the money he raised to Wilber, the Wiltshire Air Ambulance mascot he named.
The Aloeric Primary School pupil has been busy raising money for WAA. In the summer holidays he set himself the challenge of swimming the equivalent of the English Channel (35.18km or 1,400 lengths) during sessions at Trowbridge Swimming Pool and Melksham Blue Pool. He completed the swim earlier this month and Wiltshire’s Paralympic swimmer Stephanie Millward joined him for the final few lengths. Ciaran’s mum, Caroline Hanks, said: “Ciaran chose Wiltshire Air Ambulance because it is a local charity and he knows that anyone might need its services. We have seen the helicopter taking off and landing at incidents so it brings it home to us just how important it is in helping to save lives.
Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “Ciaran’s swimming achievement is inspiring and we’d like to thank him for choosing to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The money he raised will help keep our helicopter and crew flying and saving lives. “Ciaran’s other achievement was naming our mascot. We had a huge response to our social media competition to find a name for our mascot, with some great suggestions. We were spoilt for choice, but we thought combining Wiltshire and bear to form Wilber was especially creative. “Since Wilber joined us in September he has been busy attending fundraising events all over the county and helping us spread the word about the lifesaving work we do. He is proving very popular with young and old alike, with lots of people wanting to have their photo taken with him. “
Wilber is sponsored by Soft Options Water Softeners Ltd, a family run business based in Burbage near Marlborough. Soft Options supply and install water softening and drinking water filtration/purification products for both domestic and commercial use.

Turkey Magic!
Y Gran insisted on soaking her Christmas turkey in brine (or ‘broin’ as she used to call it, being a Birmingham girl). I never really understood why until I tried it for myself. You need 750g salt for a large turkey. Use a large watertight plastic box and dissolve the salt in 4 pints/2 litres of boiling water. Add 9 pints/5.5 litres of cold water and leave to cool. Immerse the turkey in the brine, breast side down. Cover with a lid and put in a cool place like the garage for 24 hours. You might want to seal the lid or weight it down to prevent mice from gaining access! The next day empty the brine and pat the turkey dry and refrigerate overnight. Remove the bird a couple of hours before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature, and prepare in your usual way. So why go to this trouble? Here comes the science! Roasted turkey can be dry and tough because it’s lean and we tend to err on the side of caution with cooking times, (no-one wants to serve up a plate of festive salmonella right?). Moisture loss is inevitable when you cook any type of muscle fibre. Heat causes individual coiled proteins in the fibres to unwind (the technical term is denature), then join together with one another, resulting in shrinkage and moisture loss. Meat loses about 30 percent of its weight during cooking but by brining first, you can reduce this moisture loss to as little as 15 percent. The main reason for this is because the dissolved salt causes some of the proteins in muscle fibres to pre-unwind 44
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
and swell. As they unwind, the bonds that held the protein unit together as a bundle break. Water from the brine binds directly to the proteins, and then gets trapped between them when the meat cooks and the unwound proteins bind together. As long as you don’t overcook the meat, the natural juices will be retained. All this ensures moister, juicier results. But what if you don’t have the container or the inclination to soak your bird? Is there an easier way? Yes, you can ‘dry-brine’, that is pre-salt the turkey. This seasons the meat like the wet brine, but does not use any water. Instead, it involves rubbing salt and seasonings directly onto the meat and / or skin, and then letting the meat rest in the refrigerator before cooking. For a 15lb /7Kg turkey you need about 3 tablespoons of salt, ¾ teaspoon of ground black pepper and herbs of your choice. Pat the turkey dry and then rub the salt mixture liberally over the surface. I like to rub about a third of it under the skin but if you don’t want to go to the bother of separating the skin from the meat it’s fine to just rub it over the skin. You need to allow time for the salt to penetrate the meat so allow a day’s brining time per 5lb /2¼ Kg of turkey. Dry brining has the advantage of producing extremely crispy skin, and we all know that’s the best bit! Final tip: Make sure you use an unseasoned turkey. Avoid pre-prepared or self-basting turkeys as they have been injected with brine.

ACK in Pokhara we “regroup” for our next adventure ! but not before an evening of souvenir shopping, it has to be done ! (I think if we were an all girls trip we would have had an extra night here !!) Early start and this time in Red tee shirts for the next part of our trip, rafting down the Seti River. The river has no road access, so the river and surrounding valley remain unspoilt. It passes through beautiful scenery and our journey will take two days spending an overnight stop in a river static Jungle tented camp. After a short briefing and safety instructions we board four to a raft but with great relief we do have one of our trusted guides aboard each boat !! as we realise none of us have done this before !! A wonderful two days as we float down the river and navigate one or two small rapids . Picnic lunches on the shoreline beaches and self made entertainment around a camp fire on our overnight stop. This was a very grand adventure ! We end our raft trip in Gaighat near the Chitwan Nation Park, where we change into dry clothes and are taken by road for the rest of our journey to Chitwan.. Situated in the central Terai region of Nepal . Chitwan is the oldest of the country’s parks. Chitwan is the natural habitat of the elusive Bengal Tiger and one horned Rhino amongst many other animals. Jungle activities included elephant, Jeep and foot safaris. The elephant safari was amazing, with four passengers and a driver we sit comfortably on our elephants and walk slowly through the jungle. We feel

we have been transferred back in time as the sound of the elephants trumpeting when they sense a Tiger, we move swiftly through the long grass , we will only be shooting with cameras thankfully !! Did we have success yes !! How lucky were we to see the elusive tiger run through the grass ,shall we film it or see the moment, its such a hard decision ! I chose the moment to look and hoped one of my friends took the picture ! The Chitwan accommodation was at Tiger Tops Lodge a superb location in the jungle and near to the river. Guests are taken out twice daily , early morning and early evening on game drives of their choice or perhaps a canoe down the river for the sunset and possible animals drinking or bathing.
Every guest has the chance to help wash the elephants at the river after every elephant safari, this is quite an experience and is another camera opportunity . The animals at the camp are very well looked after and our time here was very special. Three days pass very quickly and we are off again flying back to Kathmandu for our very last adventure ! We are going to fly over Everest ... we may not be able to climb it but this was another wow ! with only 12 seats on the flight we all had a window seat a map of the mountains before us and each in turn had a chance to see Everest from the Cock pit at such close range ... amazing ! It was the perfect end to this very special holiday ... no the perfect end to this VERY GRAND ADVENTURE!

Warmest of Seasons Greetings I
by Emmy Butcher
HAVE heard some people say that Christmas is for children, but I say Bah Humbug to that! As a fully grown adult (in all directions) I love Christmas with a passion! Like an enthusiastic ‘antiScrooge’, I act like a big kid over the whole season, relishing in all that the festivities have to offer – the carolling, decorating, gift giving and eating (ooooh yes especially the eating). I get terribly excited at the sight of Santa and smile like a mad person at anyone wearing a Christmas jumper or festive hat – I find it comforting to know that deep down people are as Christmas crackers as me and I am not alone in my seasonal insanity. Children, and families, are of course the main focus at Christmas. Not only do we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ but it’s also a magical and hopeful time of the year for children all over the world. I am lucky enough to be the proud ‘Auntie Em’ to fifteen nephews and nieces, who help me keep the magic of Christmas alive, the youngest of which was born this year. My beautiful niece, Emily-Elizabeth is quite simply the bonniest and happiest baby you will ever meet. Of course, I am biased – but she is indeed a cute little button. This will be her first Christmas and for our family this adds an extra element of excitement to our festivities. For many parents in Wiltshire, providing a ‘magical’ Christmas for their children is a heart-breaking impossibility. A shocking report published in November by ‘End Child Poverty’ shows that up to 28% of children in Calne and Chippenham are living in poverty, which is made even tougher over these colder winter months. Cold homes and poor housing conditions affect the health of vulnerable patients, namely older people and young children (especially those under the age of five). A study carried out by the homelessness charity, Shelter, found that children growing up with inadequate housing conditions, such as a cold, damp home, were at a greater risk of respiratory problems, long term ill-health and slower mental and physical development. Sadly, children who are born into the lowest economic group are nine times more at risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy than babies who are born into wealthier families. 50
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
Disadvantaged children also face a greater likelihood of developing obesity and poor mental health. Fuel Poverty, in particular, is a real issue here in Wiltshire, with many families facing the difficult financial dilemma between heating their homes and buying food. Wiltshire Council and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are working in Partnership to help people suffering from fuel poverty through the ‘Warm and Safe Wiltshire’ campaign. A one stop shop for all cold home and energy queries, the service provides free, impartial advice about keeping your home warm, understanding your heating system and deciphering those complicated energy bills. If you are in debt with your energy supplier, the team can advise you on how to deal with this. The helpful ‘heat experts’ will even check you are on the best rate from your energy supplier and switch you to the cheapest deal – with the average household saving over £200 a year. If you are a low income family you may be entitled to a grant or benefits such as the Warm Home Discount. Wiltshire Safe and Warm can assess your eligibility and guide you through the application process which may result in a rebate of up to £140. You might also be able to have your home insulated for free if you are a private tenant or homeowner. In addition, a free safety check can be arranged in your home by the fire service, who will make sure your existing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working - or fit new ones for free. They will also install draught proofing measures to keep out the cold and to help protect your family in the event of a fire. Your GP Surgery can refer you to the Warm and Safe Wiltshire scheme and will need your permission to share details, such as your name and address. An advisor will be in contact with you shortly after referral. Alternatively, you can contact them directly via their helpline, 0300 003 457. If you or someone you know could benefit, why not give them a call today or enquire at your local Doctors Reception. In the meantime, I am going to stay warm this Christmas by giving out free hugs. This is not a service offered by Wiltshire Council
and I feel there is an obvious gap in the market. If you see a loon walking through town wearing a novelty Christmas jumper and a jingling Santa hat...you might want to start walking in the other direction ... or risk being cajoled into impromptu carolling and an overdose of season’s greetings ... oh dear!

Only the Lonely Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year if you’re on your own. And, even if you’re surrounded by friends and family, it’s still possible to feel lonely. However, there are lots of charities that might be able to help: Mind can offer advice and useful contacts for people who struggle with loneliness. Visit www.mind.org. uk or call 0300 123 3393. The Red Cross and The Co-op have partnered up to tackle loneliness. They’re aiming to ‘provide vital care and support to help reconnect thousands of isolated and lonely people with their communities.’ Call the Red Cross on 0344 871 11 11. Wavelength provides TVs and radios to people who are on their own and who might struggle to afford them otherwise. Beneficiaries need to be referred, by a friend or housing officer for example. Contact 0800 0182137. Community Christmas believes that no one should be on their own at Christmas, so it helps to direct older people to events and groups that can help. Visit communitychristmas.org.uk or call 0844 443 0662. A pet can offer much needed companionship, but they do take a lot of care. If you’re struggling to look after your pet, The Cinnamon Trust may be able to arrange for a volunteer to help walk your dog, or take your pet to the vet. Contact the trust on 01736 757 900. It can be difficult to meet new people. A community class can help to get you talking to others with similar interests. Your local community college will likely have courses in everything from creative writing to flower arranging. If you’re fit enough, why not consider volunteering? It’s a great way to get out of the house, meet new people and give yourself a sense of purpose. You could volunteer at a local shop, help out at a homeless shelter, or get involved in making your community a greener, cleaner place to live. Visit do-it.org for local opportunities. It’s worth contacting your GP if you’re struggling with loneliness or feeling depressed. He or she may be able to point you in the direction of organisations that can help. If you’re not the one who’s lonely, but you’re worried about an elderly friend or neighbour, the Be a Friend campaign has some great tips about how to support them. Visit: www.beafriendtoday.org.uk. It can be difficult if you have a friend or relative who you know is lonely, especially if you’re not able to see them every day. You could try sharing the responsibility with other friends or relations. Maybe set a day for each person to visit or ring. The charities above might also be able to offer you advice.

Christmas Presents
TV Guide What’s the best way to watch TV?
M
OST of us enjoy curling up in-front of the TV on a cold winter’s night. And, as long as you have decent broadband, these days there’s plenty of ways to watch your favourite shows. If you’re feeling a bit flummoxed by all the options available, our quick guide might help to make your mind up. Freeview – Free As the name implies, Freeview gives you access to more than 60 TV channels, for free. You can also watch hundreds of programmes that have aired in the previous seven days. With most TVs, you shouldn’t need any extra equipment, but TVs bought before 2010 might require a set-top box, which costs from £30. You will need a TV aerial, and not all channels are available in all locations, so it’s worth checking what you can get before you buy anything. Satellite TV – from around £7.50 a month There are a range of providers to choose from, including Sky, Virgin Media, BT and Talk Talk, all of which give you access to a wide range of digital channels. You will need a set-top box, and in some cases a satellite dish, which is normally included in

The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
the cost of your subscription, and you’ll need to take out a 12-18 month contract. Most providers have different packages to choose from, and you can add on bundles, such as sports channels. Some providers offer wider phone and broadband packages. BT, for example, offers 80 channels, unlimited broadband and free weekend calls from around £10 per month. Netflix – £5.99-£8.99 per month Netflix is a subscription service that allows you to watch thousands of films and TV shows through your smart TV, laptop, phone, tablet and other devices. You can choose what you want to watch from a huge menu, including programmes made by Netflix, such as the award-winning Orange is the New Black. You don’t need any extra equipment; there are no adverts and you can pause, rewind, fast forward and watch again as much as you like. There’s also no contract, so you can cancel whenever you want. Amazon Prime – £79 per year Like Netflix, Amazon Prime is a subscription service that allows you to watch films and TV shows through a multitude of digital devices. With some older TVs, you’ll need to buy a fire stick (which costs around £30). There doesn’t seem to be quite as much choice with Amazon Prime as there is with Netflix, but if you take into consideration the other benefits of Prime, such as free music, next-day Amazon delivery and cloud-storage for photos, it is a great price. If you don’t want the extras, you can opt for Prime video, for just £5.99 per month.

The Christmas Cactus
C
HRISTMAS cacti are splendid plants. They pump out masses of delicate jungle flowers in rosy red, white, orange, pink, and pale yellow, depending on the variety, just in time for the festive season. And although they’re a true cactus, their spines are so tiny and soft that you’ll barely notice them - and never get pricked. Also as each outer leaf produces its own flower the display gets better year on year. They are available in shops and garden centres right now and are just perfect for those hard-to-buy-for souls. Also, according to my neighbour, who grows prize-winning cacti, they can live for 25 years or more so they’re the gift that just keeps on giving. CHRISTMAS CACTUS CARE Light Christmas cacti are tropical epiphytes, which grow naturally in rain-forest trees. Choose a cool, bright spot, out of direct sun is best. Try an east-facing windowsill, and it won’t know it ever left the jungle. Humidity They love a humid atmosphere so are best grown on a gravel tray. Fill a waterproof bowl with gravel then add water to half way up the gravel. Place the potted plant on top of the gravel. Water As it’s tropical it’s less drought-tolerant than other cacti species. Water thoroughly then allow the top half-inch or inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
60
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
Fertilizer As new leaves appear or when flower buds start to swell, apply a liquid fertilizer formulated for houseplants every 7 to 10 days until the growth or flowering cycle ends. Repotting Christmas cacti flower best when they’re pot-bound. Every year or so, gently pull the plant out of its container and check the roots. When roots start to mat where they touch the inside of the pot, move the plant into a container that’s an inch larger in diameter. Gently rough up the matted roots with a knife or fork before you repot. After Christmas When flowering is over, keep the plant indoors until the weather warms in late spring. New growth tends to start in March. If you particularly want the plant to flower at Christmas then next November put the cactus in a place where nights are cool (about 10-12C) and there’s no artificial light. After flower buds form, you can stop the cool/ dark treatment and start fertilizing for a strong threeweek bloom cycle. My neighbour tells me that Christmas cacti are pretty forgiving souls and that even if you’re unsuccessful at inducing Christmas blooms you should be treated to regular flowering displays throughout the year. What could be nicer?

Which Christmas Tree?
N
ORDMANN fir trees come in lots of sizes. They are bushy and symmetrical and are a lovely colour. They last well too, even in homes where people like the central heating set to toasty levels. The Fraser Fir has an intense festive aroma that lasts well. It’s a pretty shape and slimmer than the Nordmann so is good if you don’t have a lot of floor space. It retains its needles well. The Serbian Spruce has a slender trunk with short, gracefully drooping branches and bright green needles. They are often sold as smaller pot-grown specimens here so they can be good for a table-top tree, and can be planted out once Christmas is over. The Rocky Mountain Fir is quite a narrow tree with a striking blue colouring to the foliage. It’s also good for needle retention. Finally the Norway Spruce, is what we think of (somewhat ironically) as a traditional British Christmas tree. It has a lovely shape but is notorious for dropping its needles. Try buying a potted tree rather than a cut one, as these hold their needles better. But actually, it’s only for a couple of weeks so a few dropped needles aren’t such a terrible price to pay for a truly lovely tree.

I
God is with us
have a question for you: when it comes to faith, are you an astronomer or an astronaut? In other words, do you like to merely observe faith from a distance, or do you want to get personally involved? The Christian faith is an invitation to get on board the rocket and experience God. There is no need for us to rely on other people’s accounts of their experiences, we are invited to explore and discover God for ourselves. In the last year, we have seen Major Tim Peake become the first British born European Space Agency astronaut on the International Space Station. At the launch, his family understandably, were biting their nails and joining in the countdown, doubtless saying a prayer or at least having everything crossed in some way. Apparently, just before the launch his younger son placed his hand against the window of the rocket, whilst dad placed his hand against it from the inside, and then said, “I want to go with you daddy.” Isn’t that great?
“I want to go with you…” That sentiment lies at the heart of Christmas. God isn’t content to be distant or far away, instead, God says, “I want to go with you.” God became a human being, to go with us. With us, in the joys and the sorrows. With us, in the laughter and the tears. With us, even in our fears and uncertainties. Romans 8 v 31 says, “If God is with us, who can be against us?” This is a huge comfort to me. Reading the birth narratives again, it seems that there are three intriguing details in the Christmas story that show Jesus’ birth prefiguring his death. Firstly, the new born Jesus is cleaned up, wrapped in strips of cloth and laid in a manger. This mirrors the end of Jesus’ life, where a
blood-stained body was cleaned up, wrapped in strips of cloth, then laid in a tomb for burial. The parallel is striking. Here we have the Crib and Cross together. The womb and the tomb are side by side. Secondly, the angels are hugely significant. At the beginning of Jesus’ life, they herald his arrival to his parents and the shepherds. But of course, in a similar way, the angels are there at the end too, in the garden, announcing the news to his followers that Jesus had risen from the dead. The angels announce the name of the Messiah to Joseph as ‘Jesus’ which in Hebrew means “The one that Saves”. Thirdly, another name given to Jesus by the angel (in Matthew’s Gospel) is the name Emmanuel, found in Isaiah Chapter 9. Emmanuel means “God with us”. And what does Jesus says right at the end, after the resurrection, just before the Ascension? He says, “Surely, I will be with you always, even to the end of the age.” “I will be with you.” It’s there at the beginning, it’s there at the end, and it’s even there in the here and now, through the Holy Spirit. Perhaps I can echo Star Wars, ”May the Force be with you”, or to be a little more doctrinally spot on, “May His force be with you.” On 20th July, 1969 Buzz Aldrin, with Neil Armstrong walked on the surface of the moon. Some of you may not know this, but within minutes of landing, Buzz read out a piece of John’s Gospel. “I am the vine you are the branches, whosoever abides in me, will bring forth much fruit, for apart from me, you can do nothing.” And then he ate consecrated bread and wine and gave thanks to God. In that one act, Buzz acknowledged the presence of Jesus with us, wherever we go, even in space, even on the moon. Is this a message you need to hear this year? God is here. In Jesus, we have access to the Father. Talk to him and He will talk to you. Walk with him and He will walk with you. Place your hand into His and he will hold on to yours. Did you hear about the lady who went to pick up her turkey from the butcher? “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” “No lady,” said the butcher, “they are dead”. Let’s breathe a little life into our Christmas. Reach for the stars, expect a close encounter this Christmas, because God is with us. Silent Night
W
PART II
ITH just two weeks to go before the magic of Christmas Eve arrived, children everywhere were getting more and more excited, and it seemed as though every window in every street sported brilliantly decorated fir trees aglow with twinkling lights and shiny coloured baubles. Tinsel glittered and tiny ornaments dangled from every branch. At dusk, the whole scene outside made the usually ordinary streets look like fairyland. All that was needed now to complete the magical picture was a coating of sparkling white snow, but although it was cold enough, all it seemed to do was drizzle. Even a thick white frost would have appeased most of the children, but no, it just remained grey and wet, the puddles – of which there were many, reflecting the headlamps of cars and busses as they swished by sending up little clouds of spray. The rich spicy aroma of baking hung in the air as mince pies and sausage rolls were taken out of the ovens and put to cool before being packed away in tins ready for the big day, and frilly “ skirts “ wrapped around snowytopped Christmas cakes with their luxurious covering of marzipan and icing, all finished off with a tiny plastic snowman, a Santa with his bulging sack of gifts, or tiny fir trees or robins. Bunches of holly and ivy peeked from behind the tops of picture frames and a sprig or two of mistletoe hung from the ceiling inviting festive kisses or two.
66
And then, without warning, it happened! Various voices were heard, one after another until the streets seemed to ring out with the delighted shrieks of children spotting the first magical white flakes as they fell to earth. Faster and faster they came, thicker and thicker, until every roof, every garden, and every street wore a soft white blanket, sparkling in the street light like a million tiny diamonds were sprinkled upon the pristine scene. It was so beautiful that even the grown ups smiled at how lovely it looked. That night, the children took ages to go to sleep as they kept hopping in and out of their beds to take yet another look at what they had waited a whole year for, but eventually peace descended over all as both tired children and their exhausted parents settled down under the warmth of their covers and went thankfully off to sleep.
The children were counting down how many more sleeps there were until THE magic eve, and parents bustled about making secretive rustling noises from behind closed doors.
At last came the morning, and after bolting their breakfasts, wrapped up warm against the cold, every child old enough to walk was hard at it building snowmen. Carrots vanished from kitchen larders in their quests for “ noses “, and pebbles or lumps of coal made glittery eyes. Scarves and hats to “ keep the snowmen warm,” twigs for arms, and rows of pebble “ buttons “ down their fronts completed the somewhat wonky little “ men “, of every shape and size, and when they were all finished, the snow began to fall heavily again. The children whooped with delight, and furious snowball fights began, laughter ringing out on the clear and crisp air. For a short while, it was as though they had forgotten that tonight was Christmas Eve.
Every evening before they went to bed, the children looked out of the windows hoping against hope to spot just one tiny white flake drift lazily down from the darkening sky, but night after night they were disappointed.
Eventually they were called back indoors to peel off their now soaking snow covered coats, hats, mittens and boots. By then, tired and somewhat chilly, they were glad to sit before the crackling fire and warm themselves in its glow.
The Town Crier Magazine | DECEMBER 2016
After supper and a lovely hot bath, sitting with mugs of hot chocolate they sleepily listened while their mums or dads read the old favourite poem to them, as they did every Christmas Eve. “’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”
Wiltshire Wet Rooms Designed, supplied, fitted
They knew the poem off by heart but it was a family tradition in most houses and often the older children would join in. As it came to an end, with a glass of milk put on the coffee table for Santa along with a mince pie and not forgetting a carrot for each reindeer, the excited children were coaxed up to bed yawning, but protesting that they weren’t tired. Some of the older ones were determined to stay awake to see the jolly fat man in red with his silky white beard, and even as their eyelids drooped, they fought off sleep for as long as they could, but as last, all were fast asleep. UNTIL they heard a clatter and a thump, and what sounded like the jingling of sleigh bells. Rubbing their eyes, they leapt from their cosy beds and rushed through the window. The moon shone white and cold making the snow sparkle, but all they could see were great boot prints i9n the snow, leading up the path and back down again. The snow beside them looked a little churned up as though by many tiny hooves, and there were slender tracks like those made by a sled. The children all sighed, they had missed him yet again. A little disappointedly they climbed back into bed and fell straight back to sleep. Next morning, what a sight greeted them as they went to see what was under the Christmas tree. Parcells of all shapes and sizes all wrapped in bright paper, tied with coloured string and ribbons, crackers with their names on, and stockings hanging over the mantelpiece with candy canes and tiny wrapped gifts with a tangerine in the toe of the stocking. The plate with the mince pie on was empty but for a few crumbs, and the carrots and milk were gone too. In the middle of the hearth, melting slowly, lay a lump of snow and two slightly wet and muddy footprints. It was real proof Father Christmas HAD paid them a visit. Excitedly they shouted their parents to come and see. What a wonderful Christmas this was turning out to be. “Happy Christmas everyone,” they shouted, and from me to you all, A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS TOO. ...................... Books
A Good Christmas Read
Naughty Amelia Jane!
Wicked
..........................................................................................
..............................................................................................
by Enid Blyton
Some books never fail to entertain generation after generation and the Amelia Jane books by Enid Blyton are no exception. At some point in childhood we all wonder what would happen if our toys were alive. Well in this nursery they are. Amelia Jane is a big ragdoll and she is not just big, she is bad. And the other toys are generally scared of her. Hardly surprising when she does things like throwing pints of milk over other toys on a regular basis! These short chapters almost work as individual short stories which makes it a nice transition for readers to proper ‘chapter books’. Each chapter sees Amelia Jane getting into trouble and being naughty but ultimately learning a lesson: one that she seems destined to forget despite her protestations that she ‘will be good from now’. Lessons that demonstrate to the reader why it is important to be kind and considerate towards others. In the words of Enid Blyton: “I do somehow feel perfectly certain that she can’t be good for long.”

by Gregory Maguire
We all know what happened when Dorothy arrived in the Land of Oz courtesy of a cyclone. She killed the Wicked Witch of the East and magically acquired her ruby slippers. Helped by Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, she travelled to the Emerald City with three friends and asked the Wizard to send her back to Kansas. And of course, we know about her green enemy: The Wicked Witch of the West. But do we really know the rest of the story? What DID happen in Oz before this little girl from Kansas carelessly ‘dropped’ in? Wicked, is the story of the witches of Oz as imagined by Gregory Maguire. Familiar to many people these days through the hit West End musical of the same name, this novel is very different in tone to the musical with much more adult themes. It addresses politics, animal rights, outcasts, fate, friendships, and the philosophical question of what makes us bad: are people born wicked or do they become wicked purely by living up to people’s expectations of them? Elphaba Thropp was born with an unfortunate colour skin tone and right from the start felt rejected like an outcast. She feels as if she has no place in the world but all that is set to change when she arrives at Shiz University. Here she meets her total opposite, Glinda, and despite an initial hatred of each other they do become best friends. But where will that friendship take them? They are destined to follow separate paths: one of good and one of evil. The Good Witch and The Wicked Witch. It is how that happens and how they discover their true purpose and destiny that forms the heart of this immersive fantasy novel. Clearly Oz is not just for children.
