Calne Methodist Cherhill Pantomime Church appoints its first Parish Nurse 26th - 28th January and 2nd - 4th February

Calne Methodist Church announces the appointment of its first Parish Nurse. Emma Colgrave, Registered General Nurse, midwife and health visitor, will support the health and wellbeing of the Calne Community. Emma takes up her position on the 9th January 2017 and will be operating a drop-in clinic every Monday between 1-3pm at Calne Methodist Church in Silver Street. She will be available to discuss health concerns and weight management, take blood pressures, and encourage healthy lifestyles. Emma will also be working at the Penn Court retirement home, where she will offer armchair exercises and a drop in session for residents. At the Calne Evangelical Church on Oxford road Emma will be advising the Tots 'n Dots parent and toddler group once a month and will also be working with The Rise Children's centre on Prince Charles Drive. Emma, who is clearly passionate about the work she does, is looking forward to meeting the health and wellbeing needs of the people in Calne in a diverse and creative way. Rev Wendy Tucker, minister of Calne Methodist Church, has known Emma for many years; “We’re really excited to begin this new venture, and to do all we can to support our Parish Nurse in serving the community in this way.” For more information, or to arrange to see Emma contact Calneparishnursing@cmc2015.plus.com To find out more about Parish Nursing Ministries www.parishnursing.org.uk

IT'S Panto time again and this year Cherhill Theatre Group proudly present Three Blind Mice, written and directed by Mitch Angell. A traditional story where three mice detectives foil the dastardly villain's plot to steal the Queen of Hearts' tarts. The decorators make a mess of the slapstick decorating and the Prince falls in love with the Dame's daughter and as is true in all Pantomimes, there are bad jokes and music, twists and turns, but good always triumphs over evil. This annual event which has been running for over 25 years involves many Cherhill people who work extremely hard and give their time to paint scenery, build sets, run the box office, man the bar, direct the music, make costumes, organise the lighting and sound and many other jobs. This is a true community event, fun for all ages with six evening performances and two matinees.

‘Oh little town of Calne’

Calne breaks Guinness World RecordsTM title for World's Largest Nativity

T

HE town of Calne has broken the Guinness World RecordTM record for ‘The World’s Largest Live Nativity’ on Saturday 3rd December. The record has been set jointly by Calne Town Council and Bible Society. Officially the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title for the 'Most living figures in a nativity scene’ involved 1254 people coming together to all participate wearing traditional costumes – wise men (and women); shepherds and angels. The previous record was set by 1,039 volunteers in Utah, USA in December 2014. The night was also Calne’s annual Christmas light switchon and lantern parade so thousands of people from across Wiltshire were also in the town centre celebrating Christmas.

10

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

The Mayor of Calne, Tom Rounds, said: ‘What an extraordinary achievement and what a fantastic night. In rising to the challenge, the people of Calne have pulled together to show an amazing sense of community spirit. Everyone from the local laundrette, who gave us sheets for costumes; to the local pubs and hotels; schools and charities, played their part in making the day the success it has become. Most of all, the people of Calne – families and friends - did their bit by turning up on the night and joining in the spirit and fun of the event. It shows what communities can achieve when they come together."

CALNE CHRISTMAS LIGHT SWITCH ON

Paul Williams, CEO of Bible Society said: ‘People of faith; no faith and other faiths turned up tonight to celebrate the original Christmas story from the Bible. They had great fun; broke the world record and, we hope, brought the Bible to life. We hope people were reminded where the story came from and what it means to millions of Christians across the globe.’ The crowd were joined by artist and street performer, Gareth Jones, and Peter Mielniczek. The Calne Players, the town’s amateur dramatics group, also played the role of Mary and Joseph and Sarah Dawkins, who lives in Calne, provided her own baby, Sebastian, who is just three-months-old, to play Jesus.

Release capital tied up in your home and start making more of your retirement

The Equity Release Market Today EQUITY RELEASE has come a long way since the late 1980s where financial products were introduced that combined traditional interest only mortgages with investment bonds. These products were flawed and dangerous. Both the interest rate on the mortgage and the returns on the bond were variable. So, when the stock market plummeted and mortgage interest rates rocketed, borrowers were left with insufficient returns to cover the mortgage payments.

Others use the reserve as regular income, paid monthly or annually to boost their pension. As the release of funds is spread over time they are far more cost effective than traditional schemes where one would release a large sum of money in one go and where interest accrues on the Whether you’d like to: entire amount borrowed.

A 3D image of the Flight Room in WAA’s proposed new base.

£20,000 Target reached for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new Flight Room! A 72 hour campaign to raise £20,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new Flight Room has been achieved. The new Flight Room is planned for the Charity’s proposed new airbase on land at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham, and will be where the pilots and paramedics co-ordinate their operational activities. The £20,000 needed for the Flight Room was raised online at the Big Give Christmas Challenge from 29 November to 2 December 2016.

“The £20,000 raised will ensure that the Flight Room at our proposed new base will be equipped to the highest standards for our aircrew. The new Flight Room will be at the heart of our new home and will be fitted out with state-of-the-art flight planning and mapping equipment to ensure we can still reach any part of Wiltshire within 11 minutes. It will enable our pilots and paramedics to have the specialist equipment and space they need to plan and prepare for each mission safely and effectively.

During the 72 hour period Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) staff and aircrew posted about the variety of work they do on the charity’s social media channels, resulting in more than 38,000 accounts reached on Twitter and a reach of over 35,000 on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

“There was substantial engagement by the public on our social media channels during the campaign, overseen by Natalie Luckham of Naturally Social, and we found that using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn was a great way to inform people about the variety of work that goes on by the aircrew and the charity team.”

Cheryl Johnson, Head of Capital Appeal at WAA, said: “The response to our Big Give Christmas Challenge campaign was tremendous and we’d like to thank everyone who donated, as well as our pledgers Jeffrey Thomas, Chairman of Hartham Park, and The Andrew Smiley Charitable Trust and match-funders, Candis. We had support from individuals, community groups and businesses.

A total of £21,590 was raised during the campaign and the excess raised above £20,000 will go to the Charity’s Airbase Appeal fund. If the Charity’s detailed planning application for the Outmarsh Farm site is granted it anticipates launching the Airbase Appeal across the county in January 2017. Full details will be on the website www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Do you have a conservatory that is too cold to use in the winter and too hot in the summer? Transform your conservatory in less than a day with our insulated roof panels

I

N 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round. There are a few different options to fitting a solid roof on your conservatory, most of which require major upheaval and disruption. There is, however, now an alternative option that will transform your room from an unusable space to a beautiful room in less than one day! Green Space Ltd specialise in transforming conservatories. Their roof panels are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round. The panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day.

The system is compatible with most conservatories, plus it comes with a ten year guarantee. Your conservatory that was too cold to eat your breakfast in the morning, could be lovely and cosy by dinner time. Transform your conservatory in one day contact GreenSpace on 01793 208 002 or visit: www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk.

The shop, at 2 Maryport Street, was busy with shoppers from the moment it opened on Thursday 24 November 2016. The special guests at the opening were the Mayor of Devizes, Mrs Jane Burton, and Paul Martin, the presenter of BBC TV’s Flog It! antiques programme. Paul, who lives in Seend, said: “It was a real honour to open the new Wiltshire Air Ambulance shop in Devizes. It’s a flagship shop in the heart of Devizes. The shop is fantastic, it looks like a retail shop, and there is something for everybody. I will be shopping here regularly. The volunteers working in the shop have done a fabulous job and without them the shop wouldn’t work. “In a rural community like Wiltshire the air ambulance is vital – it saves lives. We have all been touched by it. I would encourage everyone to visit the shop and support this lifesaving charity.” The Devizes shop is open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5pm. Chippenham-based V12 Footwear name Wiltshire Air Ambulance as charity partner

C

HIPPENHAM-based safety footwear brand, V12 Footwear, have donated £1000 to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Big Give’s Christmas Challenge. After visiting the Operations Headquarters in Devizes, the team from V12 met with the team from the Air Ambulance Service to hand over the cheque and tour the facilities. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity close to the heart of family-run V12 Footwear, and this first public donation marks the start of an official year-long partnership with the charity, which relies almost entirely on donations to keep flying. V12 Footwear also gifted the whole crew a range of new V12 boots including the Invincible, the Defiant and the Caiman, along with the pledge to ‘keep them re-booted’ for a lifetime.

Ben Turner, Sales and Marketing Director at V12 Footwear: “We are thrilled to name Wiltshire Air Ambulance as our charity partner for 2017, and have made a pledge to keep them booted for a lifetime. This fantastic local charity can get to anywhere in Wiltshire in only 11 minutes, and has helped so many of the county’s residents and visitors. We look forward to raising more funds for them over the year to keep them flying.” Valerie Whistler, Partnerships Coordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance: “V12 Footwear have been great supporters of Wiltshire Air Ambulance. We welcome them on board as a corporate partner and look forward to working with them. We would like to thank them for donating to our Flight Room. The money raised will ensure that the Flight Room at our proposed new base will be equipped to the highest standard for our aircrew. We would also like to say a big thank you for the gift of footwear to our

crew, it is greatly appreciated. The money V12 raise in the coming year will help to keep our helicopter and crew flying and saving lives.” V12 has been based in Chippenham since it sold its first pair of boots in 1998, and last year moved into accommodation in the Greenways Business Park. The company’s ethos is a little different to many, with the people that research new materials and design the shoes sitting directly alongside the people responsible for quality control; the people who sell them to retailers; and the people who manage the accounts. This ensures a joined-up approach in everything V12 Footwear does - leading to industry-leading quality, innovative ideas and highly satisfied customers. Last month, V12 Footwear was shortlisted to be On the Tools’ Best Boot Brand of the Year. The largest online construction industry community in the UK. Street dance success for Dancing Academy

HE team of professionals who run the Dancing Academy in Chippenham are proud to announce they are including more Street Dance classes in their 2017 timetable due to popular demand. This energetic, edgy mix of funk, jazz, hip hop and gymnastic dance has gone mainstream ever since George Sampson and Diversity won the ITV talent series’ Britain’s Got Talent’ in 2008 and 2009. It particularly appeals to the young due to its expressive ‘street cred’ moves. Dancing Academy owner Samantha Reed is thrilled to be able to offer more opportunities to those who want to try or develop street dance skills at their studios in Unit 3, The Old Foundry, Foundry Lane, Chippenham. Samantha said: “We are really lucky Amy Van Maris, Vice Principal of the Academy has working experience in this style of dance. Her classes have gained more and more popularity, especially with the rise of dance programmes on TV. Our student Darcie Joyce recently took the plunge to perform Street Dance at the Longwell Green Dance Eisteddfod and was rewarded with a 1st place gold medal & trophy .”

Two more students have also been accepted on to the prestigious Royal Ballet School oAssociate Programme.

Samantha, who works with the students in more traditional dance genres is also extremely proud of the amazing recent achievement of fellow student Lucy Thain, who took her Intermediate Ballet, Tap & Modern and Advanced 1 Tap

Chippenham residents were also recently lucky to see the talent of Dancing Academy’s students at the town’s Christmas Lights Switch On. With a new timetable for 2017, Samantha said: “We are offering lots of new and exciting classes, including specific courses for improving ballet technique. While this year’s Musical Theatre Summer School will be rehearsing and performing Aladdin.” Anyone interested in joining the Dancing Academy can visit for a free trial class for all new students and for existing students who wish to trial a new class. The Dancing Academy teaches tots to pensioners in a range of disciplines from singing and drama to tap. For further information visit www.dancingacademy.co.uk

New Year, New You

Stretch it out S

TIFFNESS, inflexibility, aches and pains … They may seem like an inevitable part of aging, particularly if you have a desk job. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Exercises such as pilates and yoga can really help to increase strength and flexibility. Physiotherapist and pilates instructor Sue Holmes explains, “Pilates and yoga are both fabulous exercise regimes to help increase the flexibility of your muscles. Both disciplines benefit you by actively working the muscles into an end range stretch, but yoga tends to encourage you to hold the positions for longer than pilates would. A weekly workout is a great way to enhance your joint and muscle range of movement, which would not be gained by usual day-to-day activity alone.” Key benefits of pilates and yoga include: • Improving and maintaining flexibility • Promoting better posture • Easing lower-back pain • Increasing the strength of core muscles • Improving balance and co-ordination • Reducing stress • Pilates and yoga can also help to realign any imbalances. We often favour one side of our body and over time this can limit our range of movement. For example, if you injure your leg, you may adjust your walk so that you’re favouring your good leg. Before long, this can become habit and lead to one side becoming weaker than the other. Pilates and yoga can alert you to these types of imbalances, and help you to correct them.

36

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

Pilates and yoga are suitable for most people, whatever their age or level of fitness. The focus is on low-impact, slow movements. You’ll need comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, and an exercise mat. Other equipment, such as a pilates ball, will usually be provided by the instructor, although you may want to invest in one to practice on at home. You should be able to find a class that specifically caters for beginners, and there are also several types of yoga classes available to choose from, including ashtanga, hatha and power yoga. Do choose your instructor wisely. It can be quite easy to hurt your back when exercising, if your instructor doesn’t guide you correctly. Make sure your instructor is fully qualified and, if possible, ask current students for their opinions of the class, before you start. Don’t be put off by the images of size 10 twentysomethings pulling impossible looking moves. You’ll find all ages, shapes and abilities in a class, and you won’t be expected to tie yourself in knots or push yourself past the point you’re comfortable with. Most people are far too busy trying to figure their own stretches out – they’re not interested in whether you have perfected your downward dog or not.

New Year, New You

New Year’s Resolutions

A

LL too often New Year’s resolutions seem to focus on doing more of what we don’t enjoy, and less of what we do enjoy. So this issue, we thought we’d give you our suggestions for resolutions you’ll actually want to keep.

What is Hygge? You’d have had to be pretty well snuggled under a mountain of blankets not to have heard about hygge this winter. Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, it’s all about creating a sense of cosiness, of coming together with friends and family, of revelling in simple pleasures. Think warm, fluffy towels, roaring fires and flickering candles. Think good, honest, home-cooked food, shared with friends. • Hygge isn’t about buying ‘stuff ’, whatever the retailers want us to think. You don’t need to spend money to create a sense of hygge. • Wrapping up in a snuggly jumper and going for a walk can be hygge, as can catching up with a friend over coffee. It’s about a feeling, not possessions. It’s about being kind to yourself, and to others. You could… • Curl up in PJs and a snuggly blanket, drink hot chocolate and read a book. • Light that scented candle you’ve been saving. • Stop trying to multi-task; turn off your phone and focus on the moment. • Bake some gooey chocolate chip cookies. • Invite a neighbour over for a cuppa. • Send a loved one a letter. • Soak in a bath with a few drops of aromatherapy oils. • Explore the great outdoors with your family. • Turn off your phone. While fashions come and go, hygge is one trend that’s very much worth indulging in. Enjoy.

Learn something new Whether you want to get a qualification so you can get a better job, or you just fancy trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you try something new. www.futurelearn. com is a good place to start. It offers hundreds of free, short online courses. Many are delivered by leading UK universities. You could try writing fiction, exploring digital technologies, or learning about forensic science. If you prefer face-to-face tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history. Enjoy time outdoors Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely find you feel calmer and happier as a result. Take time to cook Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you could try a box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-to-follow recipes. Appreciate the little things We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often.

Health & Beauty

I

Looking after your voice

T is that time of year where many of us may feel run down and exhausted leaving us susceptible to colds, sore throats and other seasonal disorders all of which may take their toll on our voice. Most of us rely on our voice to make a living and yet very few of us know how to care for it. Occupational voice loss now affects record numbers of people. One quarter of the workforce experience problems with their voice. It has been estimated that UK plc loses £200 million each year from occupational voice disorders. For some people these problems mean the end of their careers. So the following our some basic tips that will help to maintain vocal health. • Undertake vocal warm ups before using your voice. The best way to warm up your voice is to sing. Singing uses the voice in a very precise and sustained way. You don’t need to be able to sing well to get the benefit, neither do you have to sing in tune. However, five minutes of humming along to your favourite CD or inventing your own tunes will prepare your voice for the day ahead. • Drink plenty of water and avoid drinks containing caffeine. If your throat feels dry this almost certainly means your vocal folds are dry, making it more difficult to speak. As a result your voice will be more prone to strain and damage. Every time you speak you release moisture with your breath, so if you are speaking for a long time you dehydrate. It is important to re-hydrate by drinking plenty of still water, at least 2 to 3 litres a day. • Breathe through the nose

Many people start to breathe through the mouth when they are talking. The most natural way to breathe is through the nose; it moistens and warms the

air. Hairs inside the nostrils trap pollutants such as dust particles and most germs. Air exhaled through the nose re-absorbs moisture. Most people find that breathing in this way is relaxing. • Avoid eating foods that encourage mucous Too much mucous in the throat makes the voice sound indistinct and causes the individual to try to clear their throat by coughing. Coughing can damage the voice so it is important not to clear your throat unnecessarily. • Avoid shouting In some situations people feel that they have to shout in order to make themselves heard. In order to shout most people need to raise the pitch of their voice to achieve the necessary muscle tension required to increase the volume. Generally, they place too much strain on their neck muscles and there is very little support from the rest of the body. • If you have a sore throat or laryngitis avoid whispering; use your voice as normally as possible.

Health Matters

Give the Gift of You

I

by Emmy Butcher

CONSIDER myself incredibly lucky to be living in such a lovely community as Calne. There is a real social buzz about the town with lots of thriving clubs welcoming new members and numerous fun events for all the family being held throughout the year– something to look forward to over the coming dark months until Spring pops up to brighten up our parks and gardens. There certainly was quite a lot going on in Calne, Chippenham and the surrounding villages at the latter end of 2016 and throughout December we helped to promote the Calne Mayor’s Christmas Lunch. This wonderful free event, held in the Town Hall on Christmas day, welcomed local people who may otherwise have spent Christmas on their own. After advertising the event, on behalf of the organisers, we were overwhelmed with people offering to provide donations or to volunteer and it was truly heart-warming. All of these lovely people were willing to give up some of their Christmas to make the day that little bit more special for someone else. Most of us have good intentions over the New Year, I always make a promise to myself to lose weight and by February, dear Reader, I am normally shovelling down the biscuits again. But perhaps this year we need to be a little more outward thinking and consider giving back to the community for our 2017 New Year’s resolutions. As a bonus, donating our time and skills to support others who really need it, helps to also improve our own health and wellbeing. By measuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others stimulates pleasure. A study carried out by the London School of Economics found that people who volunteer are at least 7% happier than those who do not. The study also showed that the more you do the happier you are – those people who volunteered weekly for example were 16% percent more happy.

52

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

I’m sure it won’t surprise you to hear that volunteering helps to improve our mental wellbeing. People who suffer from a variety of mental health conditions such as stress anger, anxiety and depression are helped tremendously when taking on a volunteer role. As human beings, we are hard wired to connect with others and meeting new people engages our social skills and builds new relationships within a positive environment. Gifting our time to those in need helps us to feel that we are a valuable member of our community. As a volunteer, people who may struggle with self-confidence issues are given a sense of pride and identity. You may be more surprised to note that volunteering can also lower our mortality rate and improve our physical wellbeing. Studies have shown that volunteers have a reduced risk of blood pressure and sharpened mental acuity. There is also evidence to suggest that volunteering can lessen symptoms of chronic pain and heart disease. More information about the health benefits of being a volunteer can be found on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. The first step to becoming a volunteer is to identify how much time you can commit. Many of us feel we are too busy to volunteer but don’t be disheartened. It doesn’t have to be as often as weekly or even monthly. Agencies that rely on volunteers are always flexible and most can work around the time you have spare. Even if you have only one free afternoon between now and May, your time will be valued by whomever you’re offering it to. Once you have identified how much time you can spare to your volunteering role, you may then want to consider what skills you have that could be offered. This will help you decide who to approach, so for example if you are great with people and numbers, you might consider donating your time to a charity shop or to carry out some fundraising. Or if you are physically fit, you might like to find a group which works outside such as Friends of Abberd Brook who can be contacted via their website www.fabrook.org.uk. If you can drive, you may decide that the Community First, LINK or community minibus scheme will benefit from your help. You can find out more info by calling them on 01380 732816 or via their website www. wiltshirecommunitytransport.org.uk. You may also want to visit www.reachskills.org.uk where you can match your specific set of skills to volunteer vacancies in your area.

The Town Council can also help you to find local groups who are looking for volunteers and The Royal Voluntary Service www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk can also put you in touch with any local agency that needs your help. Believe it or not you can also volunteer to help out in your local GP Surgery. All Practices in Calne and the surrounding area have a Patient Participation Group, who provide help and support and have a constructive contribution on how patient services are run. There’s normally a small commitment of time for those who can give it and the involvement of members in helping the Practice meet patient needs and expectations is invaluable. See your GP Receptionist for more information if you are interested. I for one am looking forward to being happier and healthier in 2017 so am going to make it my New Year’s Resolution to find a volunteering vacancy that suits my specific and unique set of skills. I make a cracking cup of tea and can eat a chocolate éclair in three bites – oh dear ...

Pet Health

Winter Warmers for Safer Pet Ownership by Danielle Giles, Heathside Veterinary Surgery www.heathsidevets.co.uk

W

ITH the New Year behind us we are truly in the depths of the winter months. We have already been dealing with the shorter day lengths and by using reflective collars, halters and leads we are ensuring visibility to motorists and the like. But what else can we do to improve our pets lot during this cold season?

toes and become quite uncomfortable to walk on. If walking on gritted surfaces be aware that the chemicals and salt added can irritate pads grazed by the grit; and be sure to wash off from underbellies as well as paws when you get home otherwise poisoning can become a reality when your pooch cleans himself after walkies.

It may not be obvious that slim dogs with short hair can, and do, feel the cold. Without the dense undercoat that many breeds have, for example huskies, they can be susceptible to hypothermia. Maybe you have a very young cat or dog? Maybe they are older? Like children and older people, pets will feel the cold, doubly so if they suffer from arthritis. Indeed, the cold will aggravate conditions like these. Rather than curtail their walks consider getting them a coat; fleecy lined for warmth with a wax outer to help keep them dry. Most dogs will be fine running around exercising but do consider those who just like to mooch around; they can chill easily.

It is all too easy as we know to pile on the pounds during the winter months... And this goes for our cats and dogs too! Without a doubt the shorter day lengths, colder and wetter weather mean we do not get out as often or for as long or as regularly as we do in the finer summer months. It is a good idea to monitor your pets weight and food intake and adjust accordingly. We regularly have clients popping in for a quick weight check and we will even put it on your pets record to monitor for you.

With the arthritic cat or dog consider providing a padded bed with a heat pad, hottie or hot water bottle for them to snuggle into; they will thank you for it in the long run! All cats love a warm spot, we have one that used to sleep on a ledge up our chimney (remnants of an oven from days gone by) so do be careful of open fireplaces, wood stoves and radiators as burns are a reality. Worth checking puss’s paws if you suspect she has been too close for comfort! The further north you live, the more likely your winters will involve hard frosts and snow. Did you know it is not unusual to see ears, noses and paws with frostbite? Consider the paws of dogs and be aware that snow and ice can ball up between the 56

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

Antifreeze poisoning, the dreaded ethylene glycol, is a real and serious threat to our pets (and children) and not uncommonly treated in the winter months. Puddles under cars from over filled radiators or drips left to run down bottles in garages are accessed by both cats and dogs. Sweet tasting and palatable even small amounts cause serious kidney failure and can be fatal. If you suspect ethylene glycol is the cause of your pet’s lethargy do contact your vet, as with all poisoning, the quicker the treatment is started the better the outcome. Finally, please ensure rabbits and guinea pigs hutches are well insulated and out of prevailing winds; ensure they have sufficient bedding to snuggle down into. As with all animals check water supplies are topped up and not frozen. Time to stretch those legs and get out on that walk . . . happy hiking folks.

Auto-Biographies

All-New Kia Niro H

by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - @carwriteups

YBRID vehicles are in vogue these days – or so it appears. Will this technology take over the conventional power plants we know one day? I don’t have the psychic wherewithal to tell you. But a lot of automakers seem to be following this trend – and now it’s Kia’s turn. The all-new Kia Niro hybrid is propelled by an orthodox 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine, paired up with a 32kW electric motor. There’s also a lithium-ion polymer battery where energy is saved. This layout is like with the one in Toyota’s Prius, and manages an official combined mpg of up to 74.3mpg, alongside CO2 emissions starting from 88g/km. The Niro is larger than its relative, the Cee’d, yet more pocket-sized than its other relation – the attractive and admired Sportage. The all-new Kia Niro is the South Korean car company’s first attempt at a hybrid crossover type of vehicle, but you wouldn’t know.

needs. The steering wheel is pleasingly thick to grasp and the switchgear and dials are intuitive and clear to use. The only difference between the Niro and a conventionally powered car is an energy flow meter replacing the rev counter. There’s also a drivetrain pictorial showing the energy stream between the Kia Niro’s engine, battery and wheels. On start-up, the all-new Kia Niro sounds like it’s not turned on. That’s because, as with all hybrids, the engine under the bonnet doesn’t cut in instantly. Instead of any tick-over sounds, you hear a chime, signifying that the Niro is running. It’s not long before the 105PS petrol powered unit makes its presence known, though.

Sure, there are copied elements, such as white plastic adornments inside the cabin, especially around the inner door handles. These are, undoubtedly, inspired by Toyota, but you can let Kia off because every car manufacturer ‘makes use of ’ ideas. It’s a fashion thing and, by its very nature, fashion is all about making certain you’re ‘down with the kids’ on the hottest style.

On the road, the Niro delivers even-tempered performance, thanks to a six-cog automatic gearbox. And, while the Kia Niro is no out and out performer, the additional power the petrol engine receives from the electric motor is appreciable. The all-new Kia Niro also feels planted and deals with the straights contentedly. It’s only on more blemished B-road surfaces that the Niro’s firm suspension results in a bit of jitteriness. The Kia Niro has to have a stiff set-up, though, to cope with the extra heft of the hybrid assembly. Luckily, there’s a silver lining to every cloud and this firmness means that body lean is hardly noticeable in corners.

The new Kia Niro’s body is rectangular, but it’s not at all disagreeable. The Niro has a simple, fetching form, that has hints of Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) about it. At the front, the Sportage’s genetic material comes through – most markedly around the headlights. What’s more, the rump of the all-new Niro is easy-onthe-eye, with a conventional tailgate decorated with touches of silver trim.

The all-new Kia Niro hybrid comes in four levels of trim, categorised ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘First Edition’. All are well-appointed with driver assistance, comfort, and connectivity features. Every Kia Niro has a lane-keep assist system, hill-start assist control, cruise control and a speed limiter. The new car also comes factory-fitted with support smartphone connectivity, music streaming and a DAB radio.

The all-new Kia Niro will seat four-adults comfortably, or five at a squeeze. The load area is a decent size – certainly large enough for a regular sized family’s

Gardening

The Big Garden Bird Watch I

N the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days.

Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips. Food - When I was a child my dad told me to only feed birds in the winter, but now the experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good starter mix includes sunflower seeds, canary seed, hemp and husk-free oats. Use a good tube-style feeder and clean it regularly as a build up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can by rodent-proof feeders. I also have one tubefeeder which is set within a sort of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access 60

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and ground-hugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis darwinii is a good one, but you can also confound cats with a collar, which fits around the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up. Water - A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best to accommodate different bird species, and add a flat stone or two to aid with getting in and out! Keep it topped up and check daily to see that it hasn’t frozen. If it has, melt the ice with warm water. Your feathered friends will thank you. Plants - Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it a mixed hedge of hawthorn, holly, dog rose, and rowan offers cover and food, and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha ‘Soleil d’Or’, Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Cornubia’ and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherry (Prunus padus) or a crab apple such as Malus ‘John Downie’.

Nesting - Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them. Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot Hopefully this has given you some ideas. And don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Bird Watch on January 28th-30th. Details at www.rspb.org.uk

I

Venturing into the New Year

t’s been quite a time of upheaval for the family and I. On the same day I was travelling out to Belarus to do a wedding blessing for a friend of mine, an official email arrived from Lambeth Palace inviting me to move on to another job. It’s been a little surreal. The job is a new challenge and it certainly feels as though God is in this new venture, but the process has involved a huge amount of trusting God. I am trusting that the God who makes promises, always keeps them. Sensing the Lord’s leading for the future, for us as a family, is a vulnerable process. We are holding Jesus’ hand, walking into the future, nervously excited, and yet dreading the thought of saying goodbye. In fact, even grieving. I’m reminded of the baker who was asked to make a wedding cake for a couple using the Bible verse from the first letter of John, Chapter 4, verse 18: which reads “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” Unfortunately, the baker got mixed up and put the Gospel of John, Chapter 4, verse 18. If you look that up it reads, “For you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.” Reminding ourselves that God keeps his promises and his love casts out all fear, gives us the courage to move forward in our lives into new things and new ventures. This has to be a great message for January: the beginning of a New Year and endless possibilities. Can we move forward with courage, knowing that the God who makes promises, keeps them. Our relationship with God can be a little like that feeling you get when you lose a husband or a wife in a Marks and Spencers. Where is s/he? Behind the shoes? Diving into the coats like a scene from the Chronicles of Narnia? Was that her going up the escalator? Actually, I will let you into a secret, I am terrified of escalators... I always take steps to avoid them!

Glimpsing God here and there, sensing God’s presence but not actually quite finding Him is a common experience for many, but we have to remember that the promises of Christmas still reverberate: Glimpses of God in the past were fully disclosed in the Christ child. In Jesus, there was a miraculous revelation, for all the world to see. God in flesh, there to show us that God keeps his promises. It’s like the moment when we actually find the person we have been looking for. The panic is over. We’ve found them… what a relief! In Marks and Spencers in Salisbury, the moment of revelation tends to be in the café. I never understand why they make men walk through the lingerie to get there. I make my preteenage boys close their eyes. On the plane back from Belarus, I looked out of the window (my Lufthansa flight was cancelled so I didn’t get an aisle seat) and I became aware of another perspective. The towns and villages beneath me made me realise that God has the bigger picture in mind. I could see street lights, cars, communities all going about their business underneath me and it reminded me that Jesus came for the whole world not just my little part of it. We are being called to tend another part of the vineyard, but it is all God’s field. Jesus promises each one of us that He will be with us every step of the way. That’s worth holding onto as we go into another New Year. No matter what lies ahead. Jesus will always be with us. Corrie ten Boom, the famous missionary, said in faith, “let God’s promises shine on your problems.” Living in the light of Jesus makes us secure, for we have no need to fear. Jesus’ love is perfect and perfect love casts out all fear. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk)

New Year Around The World

I

T must seem strange to most of the rest of the world that a lot of the things we celebrate, our customs and traditions for example are foreign to such a small part of the globe, but have you ever wondered if any other place on the planet has similar festivals or celebrations similar to ours? Well strangely and in some cases, many do, although not always in the way or at the time you’d expect. New Year is mostly related to the old superstitions of driving away the evil spirits still lurking from the past, in the belief or hopes of a new and luckier year ahead. In Australia, the celebrations begin on December 31st when, on the stroke of midnight, a great noise from whistles, rattles, and car horns begin, going into competition with church bells and signalling a week of public holiday and a time for families to get together for beach parties, camping, picnics and similar outings. The French used to do their celebrating during the end of March and the first week in April, but after adopting the “new” Gregorian calendar in 1582, they gradually joined the rest of the world and used the new date of January 1st. Canada celebrates the traditional 31st of December on a great scale. Parties are held at midnight with noisy music and wild dancing as people enjoy what has become a social holiday, and in the bigger cities like Montreal and Toronto, great firework displays and music festivals bring thousands of tourists from all over the world to experience the fun. (Somewhat like Glastonbury without the mud !!!) The celebrations in Germany begin on the 31st of December but during the daytime, going on until the early hours of the new day. The Day is called “Silvester” and is a feast day of a fourth century pope and a Saint. Like us, the USA celebrate the 31st with parties, plenty of food and drink, and they too adopted that date – like us, being in 1752, again as a result of the Gregorian calendar. 66

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2017

As a home to many cultures, Singapore mainly celebrates the Chinese Spring Festival of “Chun Jie”, or more familiarly to us, the Chinese New Year. It is based on the lunar calendar, and the celebrations last for fifteen days. Who hasn’t seen the great twisting red dragon winding its way through crowds of excited and enthusiastic crowds while firecrackers snap and crack around the feet of the men supporting it on rods? Even on television it is a splendid sight. A time of huge celebration and excitement in Japan, (who only began to use the Gregorian date in 1873), New Year is welcomed with many varied customs and traditions from the various regions of that country, all colourful and filled with music and dance. Russia celebrates with a warmth and sharing one would not usually think of when talking of the usual show of weaponry, but for the most part, it is a time of loving and showing friendship, and they too celebrate the end of the old year and the entry of the new. So you see, most of the world DOES celebrate New Year in its own way, but not necessarily at the same time as us, or in the same fashion. New Year resolutions seem peculiar to this part of the globe, and there is no real explanation as to how they began, but one thing’s for sure – not many of us manage to keep them! Some countries like India, China, and Israel go by their own version of the lunar calendar, while others prefer to hold festivities in Spring at the time of planting new crops. Harvest time is favoured by yet others, while some simply choose to ignore the whole thing. But whatever part of the world does what and when, most enjoy their version of the event, so to all of you reading this, may I wish you all a very happy New Year and may 2017 be kind to us all. ........................... Jo Deacon….@...2017 ........................... I also would like to give a special thanks to my lovely hubby Fred whose help researching for this article was invaluable.

Books

A Good Read The Rosie Project

North Child

..........................................................................................

......................................

by Graeme Simsion

There have been several novels published in recent years which feature an autistic character; The Rosie Project is one of them. Don is a scientist working at a university in Australia. In his late 30s he is single and largely contented. His day is meticulously mapped out, and routine is a part of everything he does. He is never early (a waste of precious time) or late (rude and puts everything out of time), and can’t abide small talk. He also has lobster every Tuesday. As the novel opens he is lecturing on Aspergers at a conference but it is not a lecture from a personal perspective. Don is undiagnosed yet many friends and parents of those on the spectrum will identify his traits. A chance conversation with the conference organiser leads him to consider if he can apply scientific methodology to the search for a suitable partner, and The Wife Project is born. Readers will warm to Don, and his naïve approach to relationships and life in general, and anyone who is currently negotiating the dating minefield might wonder if it would all be easier with the aid of his questionnaire?

This Young Adult novel is published by Usborne Books. Based on the Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ this sweeping fantasy story is set in the snow-covered lands of Scandinavia. Legend has it that children born facing north are destined to travel far from home and die, crushed under ice and snow. When Eugenia’s eighth and youngest child is born her belief in superstition leads her to fear for her daughter’s future. She lies about the circumstances of Rose’s birth but it would seem that fate cannot be deceived by a lie. As Rose grows up she feels out of place in the family and longs to travel, with a desire for adventure. Her unease, combined with a wanderlust means that when a white bear appears and offers her family a way out of poverty and ill-health if she will come away with him to a land far away in the north, she readily accepts. Here she meets a mysterious stranger in a castle hidden in a mountain. Who is he and why does he only appear at night? Faced with challenges she discovers her purpose in life in a tale of love, betrayal, and adventure. This rich story will appeal to readers from the age of 10 upwards and is a great introduction to epic fantasy.
