New Heritage Quarter Maps unlock Calne’s past

I

T’S never been easier to discover Calne’s thriving past with the installation of six new maps around the town’s Heritage Quarter. Each of the six maps contains site-specific information and historical photographs, offering readers a glimpse into the past of each location. Produced in collaboration between Calne Heritage Centre, Calne Town Council and community tourism group Calne Our Place, the maps are designed to encourage both visitors and residents to step off the beaten track and explore Calne’s historic streets and parks. Sue Boddington, curator of Calne Heritage Centre, describes “We hope these attractive and informative maps placed in strategic locations will help visitors and

residents to understand and appreciate the town’s long and fascinating history and stimulate a desire to visit the Heritage Centre, with its wealth of photographs and information, to discover more.” The maps can be found on interpretation boards outside Calne Heritage Centre and on The Green, as well as in bus stops on the High Street, The Pippin and either side of The Strand. Funded by grants from Wiltshire Council through Calne Area Board and Calne Chamber of Commerce, the maps also feature the location of Calne’s Blue Plaques and points of interest within the Heritage Quarter. Calne Heritage Quarter was delineated 18 months ago by community tourism group Calne Our Place. The quarter is one of a number of the group’s initiatives to raise the town’s profile as a place to visit, as Claire Selman, Calne Town Council Publicity & Promotions Officer, describes. “Calne benefits from a huge amount of volunteer support in the promotion of the town, with Calne Our Place working on a number of exciting projects to attract people to the area such as the development of the A4 as a tourist trail. There are plenty of ways to get involved, like ‘Calne Our Place’ on Facebook to get in touch or contact myself at Calne Town Council on 01249 814000.” Calne Heritage Centre is free to visit and open Wednesdays to Saturdays 10am to 4pm and Sundays 2pm to 4pm. Learn more about the town’s past with a programme of walks, talks and events during Calne Heritage Week from the 5th to 11th September.

Dee makes ‘The A Team’ - and they make the book! When Dee Freeston of Royal Wootton Bassett answered the call for volunteers to go and help in a small hill village in Nepal, little did she think her efforts would be immortalised in a book commemorating the Earthquake in 2015. ‘It’s hard to believe all that has happened since I sat down and read the article in the Town Crier back last summer,’ says Dee. ‘Living in the remote village with the three other volunteers, and working on the school, is something that I will never forget.’ Organisers of the project – the BOOK PROJECT – (you may remember the review of their – a day in the life of 100 women in Britain – book) set up the programme as part of their response to the earthquake appeal. ‘People kept sending us money saying ‘do something now,’ says Dr Rosa Matheson, Founder and Trustee of the BOOK PROJECT. ‘The village project was part of that. Dee’s team did so well with the work and the villagers we called them ‘the A Team’. After all that money was gone the organisaion needed to find another way to fund projects and so they produced another book - EARTHQUAKE Nepal 2015 – The Human Story It is a very special book, remarkable in many ways. Individually written pieces by 50 plus people and organisations - locals and foreigners - from a waiter, volunteers, doctors, students, children, a mother having a baby, teachers, a dancer, trek guides, relatives abroad, Rotarian and reporters, on the mountains, in the towns and in the villages - with incredibly moving photographs. It is a truly humbling and awesome book being a testament to people’s humanity, resilience, pride, courage and tremendous kindness. One cannot read it and not be moved, sometimes to sadness, sometimes to joy and often to wonder at the majesty of human nature. To order the book e.mail: the100womenbookproject@hotmail.co.uk or ring 01793 764979 The book cost £10+p &p (£12 total). ALL MONIES GO TO PROJECTS IN NEPAL.

Dee gets an individual mention Dee Freeston (shown second from right in the picture) came through the appeal in a magazine. A one-time hippie traveller she wanted to return to Nepal and give something back for the wonderful time it had given her years before. “If I make just one life better it will have been worth it”, she said. Dee was up for everything and anything that would ‘make life better’ 10 10

ERRY GOVER, of PinkBox Boutique and Claire Barker, of Hive Originals, have joined forces to launch a new range of natural intensive moisturising balms exclusively available through the shopping experience of PinkBox Boutique. PinkBox Boutique is a multichannel gift retailer based in Meadow Barn, Coate, Devizes and run by Wiltshire entrepreneur Kerry Gover. PinkBox offers a range of products from fashion accessories through to natural skincare products and artisan foods – many of which are produced locally in the county. They are available online or at the company’s HQ which was recently opened by Devizes MP Claire Perry. PinkBox also offers Boutique@ Home shopping parties and products at various farmers markets and high quality events throughout the South West. Hive Originals is run by fellow businesswoman Claire Barker, who makes products using honey & beeswax produced by her own bees. The pair met at a fair where they were trading for the day in 2013. Both had recently left their corporate careers, were bubbling with enthusiasm and had the same aspirations to build successful businesses. Kerry’s vision at PinkBox Boutique is about providing a unique experience where shoppers, on and 12

Kerry said: “For me, PinkBox is also about being accessible and offering different and more convenient ways to shop. I’m also passionate about not sacrificing customer service for the sake of technological developments.” It was natural for Kerry to ask Claire to become one of her suppliers for the PinkBox experience. The relationship has become even stronger after Kerry asked Claire if they could come up with a balm which was effective but 100% natural. It took almost a year to develop the product.

Kerry said: “The balm is available in five fragrances (Bee Natural Honey, Citrus Orange, Rose Geranium, Essential Lavender and Gardeners with Lemongrass. We will shortly be launching a new fragrance suitable for chaps! The Intensive Balms are available through PinkBox Boutique online, through Boutique@Home parties or from our HQ in Coate, Devizes.” The balms are made from Wiltshire beeswax blended with rice bran oil, olive oil and essential oils. The balm melts on the skin and is a source of vitamin A. It doesn’t include mineral oils, parabens, SLSs or lanolin and is suitable for most skin types including very sensitive skin. National success for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Lottery SUPERDRAW LOTTERY WIN FOR SWINDON RESIDENT

Receiving the Lottery Operator of the Year Award are (l-r) WAA Chief Executive David Philpott, WAA Senior Fundraising Manager Rebecca de la Bedoyere and Julian Naylor, a director of Tower Lottery Partnership and a board member of The Lotteries Council. Photo: Paul Thomas Photographic Ltd. WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) has won a prestigious national award for its Lottery. The charity won the Lottery Operator of the Year at The Lotteries Council Awards 2016, held on 27 April. The charity’s regular Lottery began in the autumn of 2009 and has a top prize of £1,000. In June 2014 it launched the Superdraw Lottery, with a jackpot of up to £25,000. Each chance in the regular lottery costs £1 a week while each chance in the Superdraw costs an additional £1 a week. The lotteries provide the charity with its biggest source of income, generating over £900,000 a year, and has 33,500 paying members across both lotteries. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won this prestigious award, which recognises the popularity, success and robust governance of 16

SWINDON resident Nick Wilson is celebrating winning £22,724 on Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Superdraw. Mr Wilson’s win, on 10 May 2016, came just three months after he started playing the charity’s regular lottery and the Superdraw. He joined the lotteries through a Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) canvasser working in the Aldi supermarket in Stratton, Swindon.

our Lottery and Superdraw. For a Wiltshire charity to be nationally lauded is a testament not only to the hard work of the charity team, canvassers and our partners at Tower Lottery who support us in running our Lottery, but above all to the people of Wiltshire who make it the success story it is.

Mr Wilson, a sales manager who lives in Hannington near Highworth, said: “The lottery canvasser was a nice chap. When he said what the lottery was for I signed up straight away. Air ambulances are a great cause and they are self-funding.

“One of the factors that determined our win is the impressive growth in 2015 of the number of Lottery members, and so I’d like to thank everyone who takes part. The funds from our Lottery and Superdraw play an absolutely vital role in keeping our aircraft and crew flying and saving lives.”

“I know someone who was airlifted by Wiltshire Air Ambulance after a horse riding accident and my father-in-law was airlifted by the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance many years ago. I was an aircraft technician working on helicopters in the Army for six years, so I know they do a great job.”

Wiltshire is not one of the biggest counties, but has one of the biggest per capita Society Lotteries in the country. Players must be 16 years or age or over. For more information about the lotteries go to www. wiltshireairambulance.co.uk/getinvolved/lottery-superdraw

Calne and District Twinning Association This year’s visit from Calne’s Twinning partners, Charlieu (France) and Eningen (Germany) (12-16 May) was a huge success. Friday we had outings to Wadworth’s Brewery and an excursion on a narrow boat in Devizes. On Saturday our visitors were thrilled with the Duck Race in Calne and the Teddy Bear’s Cup (a friendly competition between the three countries) which this year was a Bowls competition organised by members of the Calne Bowls Club. Calne won this year’s competition. Our hosts were able to take their visitors to different places on the Sunday and it was a sad farewell on Monday. Further information on Calne Twinning please contact Christine Cooper at cacooper@btopenworld.com or 01249 817137.

Being a Wiltshire Air Ambulance Pilot is top job NEW Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) pilot Rob Collingwood says his job is the best in the world. Rob, 35, began as a full-time pilot with WAA earlier this month and has flown a number of missions in Wiltshire and surrounding counties responding to medical emergencies, including road traffic collisions and cardiac arrests. This is his first HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) role. He served in the UK Army Air Corps for ten years as a helicopter pilot and before joining WAA was a helicopter pilot in the oil industry based in Aberdeen. Rob, who lives near Devizes, said: “I carried out casualty evacuation in the Army and what attracted me to HEMS work was flying specialist paramedics to patients and flying patients to hospital within the golden hour to give them the best chance of recovery. “Being a HEMS pilot is the best job in the world. Trying to help people who are seriously injured or ill is so rewarding. I’m incredibly impressed by the professionalism of our paramedics, they have exceptional capability. We can’t always save everyone and that is sobering, but we do the very best we can. “I’m delighted to be part of Wiltshire Air Ambulance. All of my colleagues in the crew, the operational side and the charity team are so passionate about what Wiltshire Air Ambulance does and are committed to delivering the best service to the people of Wiltshire and surrounding counties. There is so much goodwill amongst the public for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. When I speak to people about Wiltshire Air Ambulance everyone seems to have an anecdote about it, they either know someone who has been helped by it or they’ve fundraised for it.” WAA is the first air ambulance in the UK to use a Bell 429 helicopter and Rob said he is impressed with it. Rob, who is originally from Durban, South Africa, and has a partner and 16-month-old son, said: “It’s a lovely modern cab and it is spacious in the back for the paramedics to work in with patients. It’s a very smooth and fast aircraft and the power is incredibly impressive. It’s pitched perfectly for HEMS work.” Rob is employed by Heli Charter, who WAA leases the Bell 429 helicopter from. A Swim to Remember Dave Stevens from Calne will swim Windermere in memory of his son and to raise funds for the Make a Wish Foundation I've been training in Lake 32 land Lake 17 with Jason Tait of South West Swim who have sponsored me as their charity swimmer of the year with lots of great advice and freebees. I've also had the pleasure of swimming in Lake 62 which is a little more private lake, run by Luke Shipway of Events Logic. Last Saturday a woodpecker flew over my head as I was swimming. I'm also swimming the Bowood Triathlon, only the swim mind! also sponsored by Events Logic. I have also decided to swim Weymouth Bay as a training event for fun on the 10th of July. Setting off from Weymouth Pavilion at around 10am swimming around 3.4k to Bowleaze Pier, anyone is welcome to come down and give us a wave. It’s a lovely place to take the kids, we spent many lovely family holidays in Weymouth which is one of the reasons I'm swimming there.

S

INCE we last spoke I've been very busy swimming and organising things. I have visited Lake Windermere and had my first view of my challenge and I must say it’s long!!!!, but so very beautiful. I swam twice when I was there - first I swam across and back which was about 2 miles, but had to keep stopping watching out for boats! I think the passengers in the ferry were quite surprised to see me waving at them. My second swim was at 5am which was so beautiful as there was not a soul around and by 5.30am I was in the middle of

Windermere bobbing around. I managed 3 miles that swim, but to be honest I was in awe of the scenery. I organised our accommodation and sorted the boat hire and had a good chat with the lake warden. My training is going well. I managed a 4 hour swim last Sunday at Lake 32 in the Cotswolds. With a distance of 9.1k. Windermere is 17.5K so over half way all though it’s going to be tough as Windermere is a lot choppier, and a lot of people complain of sea sickness while swimming it, I hope I don't suffer !

A big thank you to Corsham Print for sorting out my posters and flyers (see above) you may see one soon as we flood the area, lol. I feel very humbled to be enjoying nature all around us if we open our eyes. I’ve had the pleasure of some wonderful sunrises of which I'm glad I’ve not missed, and I’ve swam with a few friends and now it's warming up hopefully a few more! Sevington Victorian School How do you boil a life down into just 20 objects? That’s the task facing the trustees of Sevington Victorian School as they prepare for a special exhibition of the life and works of Miss Elizabeth Squire. Miss Squire ruled the schoolroom at Sevington School for more than 60 years. She left such a mark on theplace that when she died, the school room was locked and everything remained exactly as she left it. You can still see her high chair and blackboard, her cane (rarely used) and the map of the British empire. There are inkwells and reading books and all the resources she used in her long career. On Sunday August 14th you can come and see the school and view a special pop up exhibition featuring some of the objects that were important in her life. Michelle celebrates 20 years at Bevirs

One of our team Michelle Bowyer is celebrating 20 years as a fee-earning family solicitor. Michelle (42) who is married with a three year old daughter, works with us in one of the largest family teams within a practice in the south west. She began practising in 1996 and covers all aspects of family law, specialising in the financial issues arising from divorce. Michelle grew up in Cricklade and along with her twin brother Paul went to Southampton University – the first generation of their family to go into higher education – and studied business in law. “I knew at the age of 14, I wanted to be a lawyer. What motivated me was when I went to a careers day organised by my school and I met a solicitor who told me I was too young to discuss a career in law. I was so incensed, I went straight to the library and researched how to become a lawyer!” Michelle worked as a trainee legal executive in Portsmouth and studied for two years at weekends at Guildford School of Law to qualify. She moved back to Cricklade and started her career as a family law solicitor with a firm in Cirencester. Michelle Bowyer, Family Solicitor at Bevirs

Are you anxious about a loved one managing their financial affairs? A Trust or Will may be the answer.

She joined Bevirs in 2014 and today, as well as being a trained collaborative lawyer, she is a member of Resolution, a national organisation committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes following a Code of Practice that promotes a non-confrontational approach to family problems.

We can put your mind at rest with solutions to suit your needs.

“These are people’s lives we are dealing with and I never forget that,” says Michelle.

“Before I was a mother, I had compassion and sympathy for my clients but since I’ve had a child I have a deeper empathy and an understanding which I believe has helped me in my work as a family lawyer. “I really enjoy working with my colleagues at Bevirs and we are a supportive and tight-knit team with a fount of knowledge between us which is invaluable.” Working part-time, means Michelle can enjoy time with her family and her leisure interests: “I am cat mad, with four cats to coo over. I am a fanatical follower of boxing and collect boxing memorabilia with a signed photograph of the late and sadly departed Muhammad Ali being my prized possession. “I enjoy yoga and fine wine, though not necessarily at the same time! I also have an unfulfilled ambition to pay homage to Elvis by visiting Graceland.” Bevirs offers a range of legal services and further details are available at www.bevirs.co.uk

Baker Brothers bake a difference Bakery, their popular family run business and cooking school in Chipping Sodbury. The Hobbs House brand has now become so popular that a new Bakery has just opened in Malmesbury, and the boys couldn’t be happier to support the RUH, who serve many patients from this area. Tom Herbert, Innovations Director at Hobbs House Bakery says: “Join us, Big Ted and local baking lovers for a delicious and fun week of fundraising. It’s a tremendously tasty way to raise money for the Bath Royal Hospital. So bake your best and we’ll see you there!”

Tom & Henry get ready to bake a difference at their brand new Hobbs House Bakery in Malmesbury, for Ted’s Big Bake Off 2016 – with Big Ted himself!

T

HE Forever Friends Appeal, the primary charity at Bath’s RUH, are excited to announce that the popular Baking Brothers Tom and Henry Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery, are the proud new ambassadors for “Ted’s Big Bake Off”. Ted’s Big Bake Off which is proudly sponsored by BuroHappold Engineering, sees adults and children all across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire pop on their aprons and get baking for the RUH. From Victoria Sponges, fairy cakes, breads, pastries and pies - something for everyone to enjoy, and a delicious way to show your support for the local people who are cared for by the Hospital each and every year. The official fundraising week will take place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st October 2016. Tom and Henry are now asking all individuals and organisations across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire to register today and pre-heat their ovens, prepare their mixing bowls and get ready to bake a difference for patients and 36

their families this October. Whether it’s holding a coffee morning, bake sale or hosting a bake off competition at work, school or with friends and family, you can choose your own way to help patients and their families at the hospital. Funds raised by your cake activities can be dedicated to the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, which is raising a minimum of £8.5 million towards the build of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the hospital, or a ward or department of your choice. Baking brothers Tom and Henry, who have enjoyed 3 seasons of “The Fabulous Baker Brothers” on Channel 4, global success with DiscoveryNetwork, and now have two books to their name, are fifth generation bakers who are also famed for fronting Hobbs House

Events & Community Officer for the Appeal, Emily Lynch, says: “Tom and Henry were kind enough to support Ted’s Big Bake Off last year and we are absolutely thrilled that they have agreed to come on board as official ambassadors for the event! When we decided to launch our very first baking themed event, the brothers were our first choice for support as the Hobbs House brand has become a household name in Bath – the quality of their baking is second to none! Last year, Ted’s Big Bake Off raised over £20,000 which will do so much to help transform patient care at the RUH. With Tom and Henry’s help, this year we hope that we can smash this fundraising target and raise more funds both for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign and other areas of the hospital.” Whether you’re an individual, business, school or community organisation, getting involved in Ted’s Big Bake Off 2016 couldn’t be easier! Simply visit www. tedsbigbakeoff.com to register and get your oven mitts on your FREE baking pack with tips, tools and tasty ideas to really add the icing on the cake. You could even win a visit from Big Ted himself! Plus if our baking week doesn’t work for you, you’re more than welcome to hold your event on a date that does.

Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together into a bowl. Add the sugar and polenta and mix together. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Lightly whisk the eggs in a separate bowl. Stir into the polenta mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. Spoon the mixture into the prepared in and smooth the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes. To check it’s done insert a cocktail stick into the centre of the loaf and check to see whether it comes out clean. SAMOS

Real Greece, just waiting to be discovered

by Sadie Goodship Samos is a fairly large island in the Northern Aegean with magnificent scenery, rugged mountains, traditional inland villages, small fishing hamlets and has the warmest most generous and gentle people that you could wish to meet. Sadly this gorgeous island has been in the news of late for all the wrong reasons. It has had many refugees landing on its shores, there are still some living in the refugee camp that has been set up near Samos Town, hidden in the pine clad hillside, hardly visible. The islanders have helped these people, many children have been taken into the small local schools, and they have generally helped where they can. I have just spent a few days visiting this lovely island to see for myself just how this is affecting Samos in particular. I can truthfully say that we toured the whole island and we didn’t see one refugee, they are not causing any problems at all. But, it is affecting the tourism so badly. Many Hotels, Apartments, Tavernas and shops have little or no visitors this summer, so sad to see everyone so ready to welcome with open arms. This island has so much to offer, the north and west attract walkers early and late season, it has lovely walks through pine forests in the Valley of the Nightingales, or gentler walks through olive groves. You will find good beaches and pebbly bays, with tiny tavernas hugging the waters edge, good roads for exploring, easy driving all around the island. Also Samos is known for its excellent wines. A great idea would be to have a twin centre on Samos or to incorporate it with other islands close by, Fourni, Ikaria or Patmos. This is real Greece, just waiting to be explored … I would return in a hearbeat … For more information about visiting Samos contact Sadie Goodship at Pebbles Travel on 01249 447488 42

SUMMER IN SWITZERLAND Spectacular mountain panoramas, Alpine peaks glistening with snow, gushing waterfalls in hidden valleys, a leisurely cruise on a paddle steamer over the blue waters of a picture perfect lake, Switzerland is a truly authentic experience. You may fancy Touring, Hiking or Cycling, a Self Drive Itinerary or just a City Break...... Welcome to Switzerland ! Just 1 hour 15 minutes from London Heathrow, you can arrive into Zurich in time for a leisurely breakfast beside the stunning lake. I travelled in late May and experienced temperatures around 24C. Spend a night or 2 here before taking the train through stunning scenery to Interlaken. Swiss rail is a fabulously relaxing experience. Interlaken has lots to offer, it has a very laid back feel, has two beautiful lakes for lazy cruises, some top notch hotels to suit every pocket, paragliding from the mountain tops if you fancy it! You can take the funicular railway to the top of the mountain to Harder Kulm and experience the most amazing views. Just the spot for a glass of bubbles at sunset followed by a delicious dinner. After your stay here you can take the train and cable cars up to the mountain village of Murren. Experience a Swiss Fondue evening before an early morning ascent to the summit of the 2,970m high Schilthorn and the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant. Breakfast is served in the worlds first rotating restaurant with outstanding views of the Swiss Alps. And don't forget to experience James Bond World and the Skyline Walk. You see, so much to experience in this stunning country. Pebbles Travel can help and advise from personal experience

Health Matters

Maternity Matters

I

by Emmy Butcher

’M not sure how it happened but my children are now taller than me and I have the smallest shoe size in the house! I am now referred to as midget mummy. This is not funny when you are trying to be authoritative and lay down the house rules. I have to stand on a box just to get my point across! How did this happen so quickly? It seems like only yesterday that my little ones were… well….. little. They continue to grow at an alarming rate, I think I am feeding them too much healthy food, or I’m shrinking. I am lucky enough to be one of three girls and my sisters have had big broods, which means I get to be fun Auntie Em, which is a much more appealing title than midget Mum. My little sister is expecting her third child this month and has asked me to be her birthing partner, not that her husband isn’t up to the job, but he does have a tendency to faint and so I am the back-up plan just in case that happens. I have been a birthing partner to both of my sisters in the past and have felt very blessed and humbled by the experience. I’m super excited about meeting my new niece or nephew. There are lots of advantages to being a Birthing Partner not least that you get to be one of the first to have a cuddle with the new baby. A close friend of mine is a midwife and gets to cuddle lots of babies every day, she says it’s one of the best perks of the job. I’m totally jealous! Believe it or not we don’t get many opportunities to cuddle babies here in the Surgery because they are normally miserable when they come through to Reception– either full of some such virus and been woken up by a clinician or they have just had their immunisations and are testing out their lung capacity. We currently have one of our team, here at Beversbrook, who is going to be returning from Maternity Leave and another who is just about to start. It’s a tag team of pregnant ladies at our surgery, these things often come in threes so I wonder who will be next. Having had a hysterectomy last year I know it won’t be me that’s for sure, but I must confess I do feel a bit sad about that when I see how my sister is blooming and I know I feel

terribly broody when I get to hold my colleagues baby. Newborn babies smell fantastic don’t they? Well, until their nappies need changing that is. If you are a new or expecting Mum, there is a whole host of helpful websites and information available to help you to prepare and deal with all the challenges being a parent can bring. But there’s not so much out there aimed specifically at new or expectant Dads. Wiltshire Council have recognised and addressed this issue by launching a new website aptly named the ‘Dadpad’, www.wiltshire.gov.uk/ dadpad. Becoming a new Dad can be very daunting and babies don’t come with a set of instructions. The Dadpad is a handy ‘how to’ guide aimed specifically at information you need to help you to look after your baby and support your partner. With topics such as how to hold a baby and caring for a crying baby, the Dadpad tackles all the basics (how to change a nappy is my favourite), as well as the more complex stuff that being a new Dad brings such as mental health and child development. The site has a plethora of really good links to other helpful sites as well to help new parents access local information and services. Regular readers will know how much I love the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk which is packed with information and advice for new parents but another great site to try is the St John’s Ambulance website www.sja.org.uk, which provides lots of helpful tips and training guides for infant and toddler first aid and basic life support. Every parent should know how to deal with a choking child so that you can act fast to remove the blockage and save your child’s life. Even if you have had first aid training in the past, it’s still worthwhile visiting the site to update your knowledge and make sure you’re prepared. Being a new or expectant parent is daunting, even for my sister who is expecting her third child, but there is lots of support out there for parents and your midwife or health visitor should be able to signpost you if you’re having difficulty finding what info you need online. In the meantime, if you see me out in the street and I look a little bit taller than usual please don’t be surprised. I may be midget Mummy but I have a rather fabulous high heel shoe collection and I intend to put them to good use! How’s that for good parenting skills? Ahem….oh dear! ADVERTISING FEATURE

How to pick the right web designer for your business website Google ‘web designer’, and you’re confronted with tens of thousands of results. How on earth do you choose the right agency for you? Without having specialist knowledge of web design, this may seem a daunting task. But don’t despair – as it turns out, you already have all the tools you need to choose wisely. Despite its apparently baffling technical nature, web design is essentially the same as any other service, and the same rules apply in selecting a provider. If you were choosing a builder, you’d probably want to know about their previous work, any testimonials, and prices. You’d also make a judgement on their customer service. This is no different for web design. Let’s look at these a bit more closely: Previous work. Any web designer worth their salt will have a portfolio of work that you can browse through. When you visit their site, make the most of that

Everything you need to get your business online for a fixed monthly amount. Friendly local web design agency. We will work with you and take care of everything, including: • PLANNING • DESIGN • BUILDING • MAINTENANCE • HOSTING

opportunity. If you think their customer sites look ugly, or they’re confusing and hard to navigate, chances are that other people think the same. When it comes to the overall impression a website makes, your opinion is an expert one. Also, ask yourself if the sites fit nicely with the nature of the companies they’re representing. Some designers add a commentary to their portfolios, and whilst not essential, these can give some indication that the designer has really thought about the site and tried to match it to the customers’ needs. Testimonials. What previous customers have to say about the company can give you a great deal of insight. Often, what’s missing from testimonials can tell you a lot. Don't forget that there’s nothing to stop you contacting previous customers and asking them directly about their experiences. Price. This is obviously important, but can be very hard to pin down. Very few web designers give a binding quotation without knowing about the project in some detail. That’s understandable, as designers have to accurately estimate how long the job will take them. Yet many designers’ web sites don’t even give rough guidelines to their prices. With so many professionals offering their service, is it worth pursuing those that cannot even give you a ball-park figure? Customer service. This is the crucial one. There are many, many competent web designers out there, but far fewer who have stellar customer service skills. Other than testimonials, making contact is probably the only way of making a judgement on this. Get in touch, and you’ll soon get a feel for what it would it be like to work with the designer. Are your emails and calls returned promptly? Are they able to communicate in plain English? Do you get the sense that the designer will really listen to you? Will they take the trouble to understand your business and translate that into a website design? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, look elsewhere! Happy hunting… Apply these four common-sense criteria to your search for a web professional and you’ll soon separate the wheat from the chaff.

Get back to nature

with a weekend survival course!

I

F you’re looking to unleash your inner Bear Grylls, or just get back to nature, a survival course may be the answer. You could throw yourself in at the deep-end by jetting off to the wilds of Zimbabwe, or the hot sands of the Sahara. Or you could ease yourself in gently, with a weekend survival course right here in the UK. Weekend activities differ depending on the course you choose, but you’ll likely end up learning to build a fire, find food and create a shelter. You could also find yourself mastering other skills, such as making traps and snares, preparing game, or wood carving. The Survival Schools in Devon and Staffordshire offer a choice of several weekend courses. You could craft traditional

weapons and tools, including bows and arrows, or find out how to track animals in the wild, for example. If you fancy getting back to nature with the family, you could try the Family Bushcraft & Canoe Overnighter at The World of Bushcraft Centre in Bedford. Suitable for age eight and over, the experience includes learning to paddle a canoe down the gently flowing River Ouse. You’ll set up camp in the woods for the evening (using a canvas bell tent), learn how to light a fire with a bow drill, and make a fixed blade knife, amongst other activities. Ray Mears Bushcraft also offers weekend experiences for families. From building shelters, to sharing stories round the campfire, it’s a great way to switch off from technology and reconnect with your family. Other two day experiences include a weekend trip learning how to navigate through UK woodlands. Wildwood Bushcraft runs survival weekends in Scotland and Surrey, with activities such

54

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2016

as fire lighting, foraging and building shelters. If you love wandering through the woods, but don’t fancy sleeping in them, some centres also offer half day activities, which don’t involve camping out. You could learn to forage for wild food with Woodland Ways for example, learning about different types of edible plants and fungi, and how to gather and cook them. Most survival courses don’t need you to bring any specialist equipment, but some are self-catering and you will need suitable clothing and a few essentials, such as a sleeping bag, reusable water bottle and torch. You should receive a list of any kit that’s required when you book, but if not, do ask. Your team members may not be too happy if you forget your toothbrush… There are several survival centres around the UK, including: Survival School: www.survivalschool.co.uk Woodland Ways: www.woodland-ways.co.uk Ray Mears Bushcraft: www.raymears.com

Gardening

Garden ornaments by Rachel Leverton

Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ’em or hate ’em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ’em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met:

Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality.

ORNAMENT IDE AS … ... not a gnome in sight!

To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobb les.

For minimalist conte mporary plots, mirrored columns an d pyramids look striking. Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, tradit ional settings. They are best made fro m marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Qu irky can look brilliant in the right set ting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip ! Natural materials can be a good starting point for gar den ornament novices. Balls and scu lptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garde n.

I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near ...

In the garden

A

vicar was calling on a parishioner, but there was no answer at the door, so he left a note. It said Rev 3 v 20, which reads, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” On the Sunday, the collection included a piece of paper from the person he was trying to visit. It read Gen 3 v 10, which says, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Don’t you love a good walk around a garden?

A few years ago, we visited the famous garden of Claude Monet in Giverny, France. It’s the house where Monet lived and its garden has been immortalised in the series of paintings entitled Waterlilies. The impressionist painter didn’t inherit the garden with its pond and Japanese bridge, but designed, planted, and invested a huge amount of time, money and energy shaping it himself. Once constructed, Monet walked through it, enjoying the different reflections of light at various times of the day and year, that changed its appearance. Monet was both designer and inhabiter of the garden. This reminds me very easily of God’s role as designer of creation. Not only did God create, but God also deemed to inhabit our world by taking on our humanity in the person of Jesus. This presence of Jesus continues today as his followers, inspired by the Holy Spirit, continue to shape and tend that creation. Our attitude to the environment is a responsibility not to be taken lightly. Beyond the environment, there is another more faith based responsibility for us. Are we simply content to have a picture of Monet’s garden on the wall, admiring from afar, or should we seek to be part of the picture ourselves? God invites us to become more than admirers of His work, but to be participants. To climb, metaphorically speaking, into the picture ourselves and walk around the garden is enjoyable and also gives us 58

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2016

an opportunity to shape the garden and even improve aspects of it. When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, before their fall from grace, they enjoyed a great relationship with God. I imagine them chatting and laughing and having real fun together. The essence of the Christian life is God calling us back to that same friendship and as a result, making the garden of our world a better place. I wonder if you've heard of a man called Douglas Kettleboro? After his death in May 2016 his family, based in Boston in Lincolnshire, found a letter written to him in 1937 by his school teacher. They believe that this letter influenced the whole of his life. Here’s a transcript, it’s full of amazing godly advice: ys have come at last your school da you more My Dear Douglas, ss mi all sh I . od things do to an end, like all go am very sorry to part with you dI than I can say, an and jolly times as d some very happy because we have ha y sincere wish for you is that you M well as hard lessons. credit to your parents, who work a be d an up may grow a credit to those for you. Quadcopters by Kate Duggan

Q

UADCOPTERS, or drones as they’re also called, are similar to remote controlled helicopters, but have four rotary blades. They’re a lot of fun to fly, but there’s more to quadcopters than just a zoom around the park. Many of them come with inbuilt video cameras, or the ability to attach a camera, so you can film a bird’s eye view of the area they’re flying over. With a quadcopter, you could take aerial shots of your village, check out places that are inaccessible by road or foot, and capture some of the beauty of gliding over a lake or fields. Quadcopters can also be used for practical purposes, such as checking whether there are any loose tiles on your roof. You will want to be careful where you fly your quadcopter; as your neighbours likely won’t appreciate you taking shots of them sunbathing in their garden. Some quadcopters are primarily designed for outdoor use, some indoor, and some are multipurpose. They start at around £30, but you do get what you pay for. The camera quality on the cheaper models is pretty poor. They’re also usually smaller, harder to fly and have a lower range, so can’t go as high or far. A high-end quadcopter with a professional high definition video camera can set you back more than £3,000. Drone racing is becoming increasingly popular, with events held around the UK, and you can buy kits to make and customise your own quadcopter. If you’re looking to use a quadcopter for commercial purposes, you will need to register it with the Civil Aviation Authority, and undertake a training course to get a Permission for Aerial Work.

You’ll also likely need to get public liability insurance. If you just want one for fun, the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider is a good beginner’s model. Priced at around £50, it has large detachable wheels, so you can manoeuvre it along the ceiling and up and down walls, as well as in the air. The wheels also protect the blades when it crashes (which it will). You control it using your smartphone and it’ll do tricks such as 360° flips. I’ve never had much luck flying remote control helicopters, but find this one

battery as each charge only lasts a few minutes, but all in all it’s a good entry model. Even if you just buy a small, cheaper quadcopter for personal use only, there are some restrictions on flying it, so do visit www. quadcopters. co.uk for more information.

surprisingly responsive for the price. Outdoors you can get speeds of up to 11mph and a height of 20 metres. It is very small and light, so the camera isn’t the best, and you’ll want a spare 61

A Good Read

The Time Traveler’s Wife

The Raven Queen

...............................................................................................

...............................................................................................

by Audrey Niffenegger

Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international best-seller. In 1991 20-year-old Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-yearold Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life; for Henry is not an ordinary man. He was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history. So, on this day in 1991 when he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. He begins to travel within her life and their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just 6 years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Written in the first person this novel alternates between Henry and Claire. We follow Claire’s timeline chronologically, with a note at the start of each chapter reminding us how old they each are at that point. Henry’s age does of course jump around. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.

by Pauline Francis

The death of Edward VI at the tender age of 15 saw the throne pass to a Lady Jane Grey, just 16 years old. Jane usurped Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but she was merely a pawn in a political game of power. A few days later it was declared that Mary was in fact the rightful queen and Jane was accused of treason. Just nine days after her accession to the throne she was beheaded at the Tower of London. In this novel aimed at young adult readers we learn what Lady Jane Grey’s life might have been like. Published by Usborne books, Francis’ novel takes the real-life Jane and creates a semi-fictional account of her short life. Jane is a young girl in love with Ned, a Catholic woodsman: a secret and forbidden love. Trapped by her upper-class life, she sees freedom and an escape in Ned. This is just one example of the clever way that Francis weaves the historical factual (Jane) with the fictional (Ned) to provide an insight into this turbulent era of British history. It provides a nice reminder to the young reader that the British monarchy was always the mostly peaceful institution it is today. It is of course first and foremost a fictional novel so there are historical inaccuracies. However, the Tudor period is brought to life in a clever and memorable way. And Jane becomes more than just a footnote in a history book.

Swindon Works ‘The Legend’

T

HE celebrity of Swindon’s past engineering excellence is not unknown, especially in this 175th anniversary year of the town’s birth. Yet the author of this absorbing book, Dr Rosa Matheson, has, in a poignant way, unfolded the history of this important engineering works, highlighting what made it ‘a Legend’. She states ‘The starting point was the fact that the Great Western Railway Company was in need of a factory to repair its locomotives’ and goes on to relate the Works’ accomplishments from the very beginning to the last day of its existence, using a format that allows the reader to dip into any period and locate points of interest. The book is full of fascinating facts, lists, and illustrated sketches; embellished with site plans showing its expansion over the decades; period photos of the changing times of its workforce; and photos that demonstrate the development of locomotive design from steam to diesel. It tells you of the multiple skills required to become craftsmen throughout the many different

departments of this huge industrial complex, and takes you into the various offices where over a thousand clerks carried out necessary daily accounting. A fascinating timeline at the back of the book highlights important milestones and significant landmarks dating from 1840 to 1987. I found this book really does live up to its title ‘Swindon Works The Legend.’ It is a good read and for £12.99 you get a pocket size history of an engineering giant.

Review by Jack S Hayward, Swindon Works’ Railway Clerk.

Emmeline Pankhurst Day

I

T still happens today: women struggling for the right to be recognised on an equal footing with men; women fighting to have a say in how things are run in male-dominated governments; women dying for daring to stand up for what they believe. This was the situation in the UK at the start of last century, but by 1918 - following the valiant efforts of women during World War l when they undertook jobs normally carried out by men and proved they could do the work just as well - women over the age of 30 were granted the right to vote. Ten years later this was extended to women aged 21 and over. Emmeline Pankhurst was instrumental in winning women the right to vote. Born in Manchester on 15th July 1858, she launched the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903. Notorious for their ‘deeds not words’ approach, its members literally fought their way to victory with demonstrations, window smashing, arson, bombings, kidnappings, hunger strikes and by chaining themselves to railings. Their most famous act of violence occurred in 1913 when Emily Davison was killed after throwing herself under the king’s horse. On July 14th we commemorate Emmeline Pankhurst Day, but perhaps the best way we can celebrate her achievement is by exercising our right to vote.

Jo Deacon

Is it me or is the world out of step! W

HAT’S it like to be “normal”? Honestly, at the moment, everything I try to do – I cock-up sooner or later, (with the emphasis being on “sooner”!)

At six years of age, the teacher gave all the class thick wooden knitting needles and a ball of grey string, and proceeded to try to teach us how to knit a simple square dishcloth.

I think it must have begun when I was born – or at least my earliest memories seem to go back to before I could walk.

By the time I was ten, I still hadn’t finished mine. Somehow I kept casting off every time I began a next row. To this day I still haven’t mastered the tricky art. Perhaps it’s a good thing – I once spent two years trying to make a polo necked jumper for a friend, but it was a bit odd because there was a difference in the length of the arms of over ten inches, and the neck would’ve kept a Giraffe warm, whereas the length of the garment only came down to the navel! (And that was just the front – the back almost reached the knees!) I sort of lost interest and never tried again! I can sketch and paint, make Faberge eggs. I can make jewellery and I can answer most questions on TV quiz shows, but show me something “normal” women can do – and that’s me stumped!

When I started infant school at age five, while the other kids played happily in the sand-pit, I was making anatomically correct figures, (without the dangly bits) as I’d never even seen a picture of a naked male and had no brothers or sisters. Not only did I do the skeleton, but I remember putting veins and muscles and then a layer of “skin” over the whole thing, plus garish yellow or brown “hair”. As the infant class, the toys and various other playthings weren’t too great, so I made do with what we had – I was making little green figures long before America got so hyped up about their UFO secret depot in the desert ! (God knows what they’d have made of the purple ones with neon orange Rastafarian pony-tails !!!) When the other kids drew woolly sheep and other assorted farm animals – after one sad attempt at an elephant, I put his trunk at the wrong end – so gave up and went back to drawing my favourite subject – ballet dancers. If I ran out of paper, I simply improvised by using the wooden lid of my desk! My teacher loved them, so to the other tot’s disgust, I never even got told off – just missed a playtime or two scrubbing them off. (Ready for the next lot!) When we went up a year, the teacher decided it was time to introduce us to the art of knitting. My grandma was a wonderful knitter and seamstress. She knitted all my baby clothes, dressed all my dolls, made me scarves and hats and mittens in the winter and lightweight cardigans in the warmer weather. She could make just about anything. While I held her skein of wool as she wound it into a ball, she would tell me wonderful stories about her childhood and she helped me to read by the time I was five and a half. The only thing she couldn’t teach me was how to knit. There were more dropped stitches in anything simple I tried than in an appendectomy scar stitched by a blind surgeon! 68

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2016

Now I find I am once again battling the dreaded “love handles” (well, more like tractor tyres in my case!) I’m sure some little gremlin sneaks into our bathroom in the night and adjusts the scales. How else can you explain how I go to bed at nine and a half stone – and wake up to find the cursed little needle wobbling on the ten stone marker? Peeved about this, I eat hardly anything for a week and leave the scales alone, only to find I’ve put another two or three pounds on. HOW? Buying new clothes is a nightmare. If a dress fits my ever inflating and deflating boobs, it’s too tight round my butt. If it fits my boobs AND butt – it’s too tight round my waist! If wonder of wonders it fits all three – I find it’s a maternity dress !!! And bras – talk about my cup runneth over! Either that or I can’t flaming breathe! Honestly, I’m sure it’s the world that’s out of step and not me. It must be. I wonder what it’s like to be “normal”. This non-knitting, non-domesticated goddess, who goes up and down like a yo-yo would dearly love to know. Answers please on a postcard. Joanne Deacon ... @ ... 2016
