Redevelopment of the Town Hall Complex Calne Town Council is in the very early stages of a redevelopment project for the Town Hall. The project will transform spaces such as the old fire & ambulance station behind the Town Hall into areas that can be enjoyed by the Calne community and visitors to the town. Plans include developing a gallery space and cafe to unite all areas of the Town Hall - creating a cultural hub and civic centre for the town. Share Your Views Whilst the project is several years away from completion, Calne Town Council would like to gather your initial thoughts on the concept. If you have a few minutes, please complete this short survey to capture your current thoughts on the Town Hall: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ ZRS9KM2 Keep an eye out for more consultation opportunities over time. Share your Memories Have you attended an event in the Town Hall between 1940 – 2000? The town council would love to see your photos and hear your memories to gather a picture of what the Town Hall was like in the past. ADVERTISING FEATURE

Total Carpets opens new showroom in Calne Steve White and Terry Weaver set up the flooring business Total Carpets and Flooring in 2014, and it has now expanded and offers bedroom and kitchen furniture, and free kitchen planning, via Total Bedrooms and Kitchens. Using Steve’s experience as a carpet salesman and Terry’s building firm TJ Professional Builders and their contacts, the Total team can now offer a huge range of services from selling products to installations and building work, as well as providing appliances. Steve said, “Unlike big retailers we can offer services across the board - if you want a tap fitted we can do that, and if you want walls knocked down and extensions built

we’ll do that too. By offering it all in the same place, we take out the hassle of shopping around, and provide a comprehensive tailored service.” Steve and Terry, both from Wiltshire, get most of their work from the local area, and make sure to use local electricians and plumbers. “What we really wanted to do with the showroom is create a base available to everyone; many people don’t want to do it online or by phone. The showroom is in a really good central, busy location. Now we can show that we have a range of products and we can cater to everyone’s style and budget, whether they want modern or traditional, basic or high end; we’ve got it all at very competitive prices.”

Local Focus

Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival 2016 Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June

Kington Langley, nestled between Chippenham and the M4 Junction 17, is fast becoming a major tourist attraction, at least once a year! For the past 16 years on the 3rd weekend in June (Sat 18th & Sun 19th June 2016), villagers and friends build around 70 Scarecrows on a theme and display them on a trail around the village and invite visitors to guess the titles. The theme for 2016 is Hobbies, but here it seems like it’s more of an obsession! They run workshops to help young and not so young to build scarecrows, and they even

have their own internet radio station, CrowZone Radio! Visitors are even given a chance to share in the obsession with a version of the popular TV show Scrapheap Challenge, where teams of 4 can build a scarecrow using only what they find in the scrapheap. Scarecrow festivals are becoming more popular all around the UK countryside and even abroad, so why the growing interest? It may be that the scarecrow festival has become a natural extension of the village fete, for example at Kington Langley there’s a traditional tea tent, BBQ and Beer Tent (quaintly called “The CrowBar”). There are also entertainments laid on for the children with Donkey rides, Circus skills, Princesses and a live sound stage showcasing local talents. 16 years ago there weren’t so many scarecrow festivals around, at Kington Langley it started as a village celebration of Rogation Sunday. Residents were invited to build a scarecrow but there was no theme or competition, in fact there wasn’t even a map! As the event grew through the years it has focussed more on the visitors and now there is an established trail, with a £100 prize for the person who guesses the most scarecrow titles, and a kids competition for the really little ones too. Steve Howe, 2016 ‘Chair of Scare’ says “we have worked hard to create

a trail that is safe and accessible to all, there are no major hills and although our village doesn’t have many footpaths, we close off a couple of the lanes to keep traffic under control. We’re really pleased that we see familiar faces year by year, and new visitors too. The best thing is to see everyone relaxing on the village common enjoying the food, drink and atmosphere. There’s a great community spirit and the event relies on villagers and local groups volunteering to make the event run like clockwork. The Women’s Institute take a shift on the tea tent, and the local Air Cadets manage the car parks (kindly provided by local farmers and land owners). The school hosts the Craft Fair and the Church and Chapel run Cream Teas for a day. It’s a real village event. We try to keep the event an affordable family day, but any profits we make are donated to local charities and projects – our prime charity in 2016 is the Wilts Air Ambulance, a fantastic service that has saved lives in our village and many others” So keep an eye open for scarecrow festivals this summer, they’re all different and are always a fun day out for the family and won’t break the bank.

Family fun focus for Canal Heritage Walk The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust walk, on June 26th, is completely new for 2016. Members of the public, friends and supporters, are invited to join volunteers on a Heritage Walk, retracing the original route of the ‘Ippey Cut’ from the Chippenham town wharf (now the bus station) to Pewsham Locks. The Heritage Walk will be suitable for all ages: about two miles there and two miles back. Keener walkers can continue on to The Bell at Lacock, following a beautiful mile and a half stretch alongside the restored canal; there will be a minibus back for a small donation. Registration is at the Buttercross, Market Place, Chippenham (SN15 3HD) at 10:00 and the walk starts at 10:30. Entry fee: £5 per person or £10 per family group. Visit: www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk

Get on your Bike for Wiltshire Air Ambulance WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) is encouraging people to get on their bicycles and take part in the Wiltshire Big Wheel and Wiltshire 100 to raise money for the charity. This is the second consecutive year that the charity is involved in the event. It takes place on Sunday 25 September 2016 and riders have a choice of a 12 mile family route, 45 miles or 100 miles. The ride, organised by Bristolbased Bike Events, starts and finishes at The Green, Devizes, and goes through the Vale of Pewsey. The 45 mile route goes to Marlborough and the 100 route takes in the Wylye Valley and Salisbury. Sue Andrews, operations assistant at WAA, is planning to do the 12 mile route with her children Thomas, 11, and Ava, five. Sue, who joined WAA in November 2015, said: “We cycle regularly as a family and are looking forward to the Big Wheel ride, it sounds fun. It’s great that the ride is raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Since I’ve worked here I’ve been truly humbled at the generosity of all the people who fundraise for us and all the staff are a pleasure to work with. It is the happiest place I’ve worked in a long while.” 22

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

Kenresa Stratford, Fundraising Coordinator at WAA, said: “Last year’s Wiltshire Big Wheel and Wiltshire 100 was our first major cycling event and it was a great success for us. People who took part expressed a wish to do it again. We’re thrilled to be the sole charity partner for the event this year. What a great event to do by keeping fit, spending time with the family, enjoying the wonderful Wiltshire countryside and fundraising to keep our helicopter flying and saving lives for anyone who lives, works or travels in Wiltshire.” Registration is £5 for children. Adult entry costs £10 for the 12 mile route, £17.50 for the 45 mile route and £23 for the 100 mile route. There is no minimum fundraising target but, as an incentive, people who raise £75 will receive a medal on completion of the ride and those who raise £150 will receive a cycling jersey. If you would like to sign up to take part or want more information email: kenresa@wiltshireairambulance. co.uk or visit www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Jodie Joyce has joined entrepreneur Samantha Reed as the studio manager of Wiltshire’s prestigious The Dancing Academy based in Chippenham. Jodie (33) was taken on to help run the day-to-day activities of the dance school, based in Foundry Lane, Chippenham, after many years of attending with her daughter Darcie. Managing Director Samantha Reed said: “Jodie has quickly become invaluable to the business. I’ve often viewed myself as ‘unmanageable’ in many ways but she’s come in and made my life so much easier and the business is running smoothly behind the scenes. I cannot imagine being without her now.” Jodie and Samantha have been friends for many years after Jodie’s daughter started ballet lessons when she was younger. Jodie, who lives in Chippenham, started volunteering at dance classes to help Samantha but also to do something different. She said: “I’m a very sociable person, I enjoy variety and I like dealing with customers. It was Darcie’s passion for dancing which brought me here and I very quickly want to be part of the success of the business.” Samantha said: “After a time I realised how much I needed someone like Jodie to help me be even better in my business. It was a logical step to offer Jodie a role which works for me and for her.” The Dancing Academy was set up by dance teacher Samantha Reed (40) in 2008. It provides classes in classical ballet, baby ballet, adult ballet, tap, street and modern dance as well as offering musical theatre, singing, drama and Pilates. Alongside Samantha are four other ex professional dancers, now teachers. Currently about 250 adults and children attend the academy each week. June 3rd 2016 marks the first anniversary of Odette, Funeral Director in Calne. A year that has seen the business go from strength to strength. Odette who opened her office in Phelps Parade ran it for the first 9 months single handedly and with over 16 years experience in the funeral industry she has a formidable reputation within the town and surrounding community. Now that the first year is drawing to a close she has decided to take on her eldest son, Liam, to share some of the responsibilities and work load, releasing Odette to concentrate on other areas of the business however she will still be seen walking out to lead the funeral procession. Chatting with Odette you can see the passion radiate through as she talks to you about her life as a funeral director, one that she has been keen to achieve since the age of 14 years old. “It all started as curiosity”, she continues. “I wanted to know what goes on behind those closed doors. There is a lot a mystery and myth surrounding the profession. I want to take that away”. Odette has a wealth of experience including a Diploma in Funeral Directing which she achieved in 2007. She hopes to impart her knowledge to her son so that he may one day take the Diploma which is awarded by the National Association of Funeral Directors. In the meantime what does the future hold for Odette? She has decided to do a trek to Kilimanjaro for the British Heart Foundation. This takes place in September of this year. Odette has taken on a number of activities to raise over £3,500 for the charity. She and her friends have taken part in a bag pack in Sainsbury’s, a 5k obstacle course and she is planning a parachute jump. Odette has organised a charity auction which will take place on Saturday 16th July in the Masonic Hall in Calne. The ‘What 4’s’ band is playing and there will be a hog roast supper. Odette says, “this is going to be an exciting event with tickets to the theatre, football, racecourse and a Dyson all up for grabs with many other items coming in on a regular basis.” For information and tickets please call her office on 01249 819972 or visit, Odette, Funeral Director, 7 Phelps Parade, Calne. Tickets are £22 each.

Kerry said: "It's been a journey to get here with a lot of hard work from all of us to get Meadow Barn ready for the opening. We're very grateful to Claire Perry for coming along to support us." Meadow Barn is the new home of Kerry's online gift shop PinkBox Boutique which sells many skincare and food products from Wiltshire suppliers and producers. A crowd of local supporters and business owners gathered for the opening and were given a tour of the facility which includes a retail space, comfortable seating area, coffee bar, private meeting room and therapy room. Although PinkBox was created more than two years ago, Kerry always had a wider vision to create a relaxed and accessible space where local people, sole traders and micro businesses could meet, by appointment, and reduce isolation in a semi-rural environment. Dads are often harder to buy for than mums. Rather than plump for a new book, shirt or plant again, why not give him the gift of time instead? You could…. Go for a walk - Check out www.ramblers.org.uk and www.walkingbritain.co.uk for ideas for routes, from a gentle stroll to a full on hike. You could even make a weekend of it by taking up the challenge of a longdistance route, stopping at B&Bs, cafes and pubs along the way. Take a look at www.nationaltrail.co.uk for details of long-distance walks, such as the Cotswold Way, which meanders through picturesque villages, beautiful countryside and ancient landmarks. Get adventurous - If your dad is up for a spot of adventure, you could book in to go abseiling, skydiving, flying, or rock climbing together. Learn a new skill together - Take the time to bond while learning something new. Depending on your dad’s interests you could start a cookery course, learn beekeeping, try your hand at archery or take up horse riding. If you’re struggling to commit to a longer course, you could always try a taster session. Take an interest - Whether he’s happiest digging in the allotment or playing guitar, join him for an afternoon or evening and let him show you his world.

INDIA

A journey around India's Golden Triangle reveals the exceptional wealth of cultural, historical and architectural splendour in three of Northern India's most captivating cities : Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Your journey can be extended beyond this by taking the narrow gauge mountain railway toy train ride to Shimla, the British summer capital during the Raj era, where the scenery is spectacular as you would expect being located in the foothills of the Himalayas. Whilst in Delhi take a drive past India Gate and the former viceregal residence. Onto Agra for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal and then continue on to the pink city of Jaipur. Take an elephant ride up to the Amber Fort and then the City Palace. Of course you may choose to add a visit to Ranthambore National Park, home to tigers and panthers - your choices are endless.

SRI LANKA A stunningly beautiful, 270 mile long tear-drop shaped island, hanging from the southern tip of India. Home to seven UNESCO World heritage sites, an abundance of wildlife, including leopards and an elephant orphanage, misty mountain tops, lush tea plantations and tropical rain forests. Not forgetting Palm fringed, golden beaches and the warm and friendly hospitality of it's people. A tour with private driver is the best option. After your direct flight and a night on arrival in Colombo, start your tour, taking in Habarana and Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, you may then want to climb Sigiriya Rock, and then onto Kandy, located in the hills surrounded by tea plantations. Stay a night in an actual Tea Factory, like me! You can then take in a short safari stay before heading to your choice of beach hotel for a few nights, or you can extend your holiday by flying on to The Maldives for as many nights as you fancy !

Health & Beauty

The Fabulous World of Nail Art P by Kate Duggan

EOPLE have been painting their nails for thousands of years. A decade ago one could only choose between a coloured polish or a French manicure. But recently nail art has taken off, with elaborate designs featuring everything from geometric patterns to miniature landscapes. Nail art ranges from simple stripes, to incredibly intricate creations, some of which can take hours to produce. For the fancier designs and best

results, visit a nail salon. There are plenty of stand-alone salons across the country, as well as smaller nail bars in spas, department stores and beauty salons. If you have time, patience and a steady hand however, you could try the following designs at home, particularly if you have a willing friend to help out…

Monochrome - Try painting half a nail black, and the other half white, or go for a more detailed design, such as zebra print.

Flags - Many countries’ flags are quite simple to recreate. You could paint each nail with the same flag, or go for a full United Nations range of designs. Flags are ideal for celebrating sporting events, such as UEFA Euro 2016 or Rugby Union. Polka dot - Paint each nail with a base colour and allow to dry before dotting on different colours. Stripes - Fun for summer, stripes can conjure up images of seaside deckchairs or Breton t-shirts. Stripes across the nail can be slightly harder to get right, so you may prefer to work from the nail bed to the tip. All that glitters - This look is easy to create, but effective. Paint your nails with a high shine metallic polish, such as Nars’ in Milos Rich Gold. While wet, sprinkle over some fine glitter. Alternatively, choose a polish which already has added sparkle, such as L’Oreal’s Color Riche Gold Dust. Ombre - With this look you want to create a gradient of colour. Start by painting the lightest shade onto your nail and leaving it to dry. Then paint a band of the light shade onto a flat glass surface, and a darker shade above it. Altogether, the painted area on the glass should be just longer than your nail. Mix the shades together slightly where they meet. Lightly press a makeup sponge into the polish, then roll it onto your nail. Embellishments - Stick on nail gems are easy to apply, although they don’t tend to last very long! Try a line along the cuticle, or one small gem on each nail. For best results, allow plenty of time for each colour to dry, before applying the next shade, to avoid smudging. You may also want to add a clear top coat, to help your creation last longer. Have fun!

How to get started with Family History

Y

OU know when a new series of Long Lost Families has returned to TV because of the loud sniffs and copious tears witnessed in our front room, as we watch people being reunited after years of separation. It’s one of several TV programmes designed to bring families - past and present, alive or dead - together again. Others include Heir Hunters and Who Do You Think You Are? I’m addicted to them all! A keen family historian since my teens, I can to some degree tell you who I think I am. Though I was born in the north of England, for generations my dad’s family were humble farm workers from Suffolk. My mum’s granddad was an illiterate cockney who delivered the marble staircase that sits in Madame Tussaud’s. My maternal grandma was born in Sheffield and lived to be 98 years old. Her parents’ marriage caused a family feud that resulted in grandma being placed in an orphanage at the age of three. There are sad stories that break your heart, and heartwarming tales that give hope and encouragement. But whatever your research reveals, you will find it hard to remain unmoved. So, if you have never done family history before, how do you get started? First, write down what you know already. List the full names, birthdays, marriage and death dates of people known to you. Ask relatives for

48

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

information (particularly older ones who have been around longer), and refer to birth, marriage and death certificates if you have them to verify information and give you extra details such as place names. Next, visit websites devoted to family research, where you can look up information, order certificates and record your details. Some of the most popular include My Heritage, Ancestry and Find My Past. In most cases there is a charge for their services, but there are various payment options and generally they are not too expensive. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts a website called Family Search which offers free membership and exchange of information with other like-minded people. It is one of the largest databases in the world and is a great starting place for beginners. In addition, you can subscribe to websites (often for free) or purchase software to help you organise and manage your information. Family Tree Maker and Family Roots are two that I am familiar with. In addition to entering names and details, you can upload photos and videos and really start building up a picture of what you and your relatives are like. Once you start your research, you will become part of a community that is friendly, helpful and really feels like family. Good luck!

The Festival of Learning W

by Kate Duggan

E tend to think of education as something which stops when you reach adulthood, but lifelong learning can open up many new avenues. From learning a new hobby, such as sewing, ballet, or art, to mastering a skill that can boost your career-progression, adult education can enrich your life and open up new opportunities.

Thousands of people took part last year. Comments included:

The Festival of Learning runs until 30th June and aims to inspire people to learn a new skill. There are taster sessions and activities planned across the country, many of which are free. Events include careers advice sessions, college open days and ‘have a go’ sessions, where you could try your hand at everything from computing to cookery.

“I decided that I was going to take myself to university because my children needed someone to give them a better life and I was the only person that could do that.” “I have found my passion in life.”

If you haven’t heard of the Festival of Learning before, that may be because it was called Adult Learners’ Week for 24 years. I think the Festival of Learning sounds rather more enjoyable, and there are certainly some promising events and activities lined up for this year. The Festival of Learning culminates in an awards ceremony in September, where inspiring learners, tutors, education providers and employers are recognised for their achievements. Last year’s winner in the learner category, Adele Tilley, credits education for helping her to leave an abusive relationship, let go of friends and situations that were dragging her down, and carve out a new life for her and her children. 50

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

“It was like someone had turned a light switch back on, that had been turned off for lots and lots of years.” “I’m not too old!” “I just felt a sense of worth.”

“You’re always learning, right up until that last breath goes. That’s what life is.” There were more than 3,000 events held across the UK last year, and this year’s Festival of Learning looks to be even bigger. Most people have something they would like to learn, whether it’s how to manage the family finances better, how to plaster a wall, how to programme a computer, or how to write a screenplay! As Adele Tilley says, “Good luck on your journey and remember – many things that are worth doing are not easy and many things that are easy are not worth doing! Go for it – what do you have to lose? In fact, maybe you have more to gain?” If you fancy taking up the challenge of trying out a new experience for yourself, check out the Festival of Learning website at: www.festivaloflearning.org.uk

Health Matters

Sunbeam Smiles!

T

by Emmy Butcher

HE sun is shining and it makes such a difference, dear Reader, doesn’t it? The longer days and the warm mornings really brighten up our general outlook on life. On Monday mornings, Beversbrook Medical Centre hold their extended hours, with an early 7.00 am start. I like to get in to the Surgery in good time, as I help to man the Reception desk which, during the winter months, means waking up in the dark and going out in the cold weather. I would normally be grumpy for the rest of the day, following on from the gloomy start and my colleagues would avoid me like the plague! However, this sunny weather certainly makes for a much perkier and more popular Practice Manager. It’s not just sunny weather that helps to improve a low mood. Exercise and healthy eating also provides a boost to our general sense of wellbeing and drinking lots of water, keeping hydrated will help with energy levels. Taking up a hobby or planning a holiday are also great mood boosters as is treating yourself to a manicure or a new haircut. If, like me, you start with all good intentions but struggle to keep motivated and stay on track, you may find that your local Health Trainer can be of assistance. Health Trainers are funded by Wiltshire Council and are there to help you achieve healthy living goals such as losing weight, quitting smoking or getting more exercise. You can access this free one to one service by calling 0300 0034566. Many people practice mindfulness, which is proven to help us deal with stresses and strains of everyday life. Meditation and mindfulness has certainly helped build my resilience and ability to cope with being a full time mum and Practice Manager. NHS Choices (www.nhs. uk) have a great section about how mindfulness can benefit our mental health but another great website to try is www.bemindful.co.uk, with an online course which is free to start (although there is a fee for the full course). Both sites are jam packed with all kinds of interesting information about mindfulness and meditation and are a good resource for anyone wanting to learn more.

52

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

If you suffer from anxiety or stress you may benefit from talking therapies, which can be very effective in increasing an understanding of what triggers negative feelings and develop strategies to help manage symptoms. You can access a local group course or one to one therapy, by contacting Wiltshire’s IAPT service (01380 731335). Formally known as LIFT, this NHS funded Psychology service will be able to assess your symptoms and set up an appointment with an IAPT Practitioner at your GP Surgery or a nearby venue. There are lots of charity run organisations who can help to cope with low mood and anxiety. MIND (www. mind.org.uk) promotes the views and needs of people with mental health problems. Anxiety UK (www. anxietyuk.org.uk) and No Panic (www.nopanic.org. uk) are charities who can provide help and support for patients who suffer anxiety symptoms. Even if you’re feeling pretty jolly right now, I encourage all chaps to join the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) www.thecalmzone.net. Aimed at men aged 15 and over this fun site is full of things to help men improve their overall outlook on life. Wiltshire is also lucky enough to have a whole host of excellent Counsellors, although they are not NHS funded, most offer a free initial session to get to know you. The Counselling Directory is a good place to start to help you choose a counsellor to suit your needs www.counselling-directory.org.uk. However, if you feel that your mood has been consistently low for more than several weeks and you are struggling to cope or if you have thought about self-harm, you should make an appointment to see your GP as soon as possible. People who are suffering from depression find it hard to imagine that treatment can actually help and often can’t see a way forward, but clinical depression is a serious illness and is very different from feeling low, miserable or fed-up. Depression can be triggered by a negative life event (such as bereavement) or it can happen for no obvious reason at all. Sometimes it can be difficult to notice if you have depression as it can build over a gradual progression but if you have found yourself withdrawing from the things you used to enjoy or if you find that your low mood has a significant impact on your daily life or relationships then visiting a doctor to talk about your feelings would be helpful. Your doctor may prescribe a course of anti-depressants, which will help to redress the chemical imbalance in the brain, thought to be one of the symptoms of clinical depression. However, there are lots of different types of antidepressant medication and you may need to work with your GP to find the right one to suit you.

In the meantime, you will be pleased to hear that I received a compliment from a patient last week. Surprisingly, it doesn’t happen all that often so when someone does say something nice it’s treasured and catalogued away in my happy thoughts. This lovely patient told me that my smile was like sunbeams, which was such a nice thing to say and had me grinning from ear to ear all morning. Upon reflection, I took it as a compliment, in that they meant that my smile was radiant and not that I had yellow teeth(?)….. oh dear! The difficult patch

VERY garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. HostaAjuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slug-watch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions. Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris.

Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention. Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with its red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well. Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed.

National Picnic Week

T

by Susan Brookes-Morris

HE weather’s warming up, so why not get outside and go for a picnic? 11-19 June is National Picnic Week: a celebration of picnicking that’s been happening in the UK for over a decade.

recommendations for places to enjoy your picnic on the National Picnic Week website: www. nationalpicnicweek.co.uk or you could try asking friends for their preferences.

Some see picnics as a romantic affair to be shared with a loved one, fine foods and a bottle of champagne. For others it’s an inexpensive family day out and often a reminder of childhood days. Or it could be a chance to spend time with friends, choosing to meet at a given location and each bringing along their favourite food and drinks to share.

For many people a picnic consists of traditional items such as sandwiches, crisps, boiled eggs and cakes or fruit. Research shows however that Mediterranean options such as deli-style meats, olives, humus and crackers are also now commonly included and some choose to create items from special picnic recipe books.

Whilst many do choose a countryside spot for their picnic there are many other options including local parks, the grounds of stately homes, the seaside and riverside settings. You can find

One of the tricks of picnicking successfully is packaging items correctly to ensure food is not squashed beyond recognition and drinks don’t leak. Carrying your picnic on a bike ride can create extra difficulties but add to the

fun. You could even splash out on a traditional picnic hamper. It’s a good idea to remember to take napkins or kitchen roll and some wet wipes, as eating a picnic can get a little messy, particularly if you are sat on a picnic rug rather than at a table. Do take some bags for your rubbish too; never leave litter behind. It’s not just about the food and drink. Most picnics include some form of group exercise such as a walk, cycle, swim or game of rounders, in addition to a good laugh and a chat. This makes picnics a stress-busting, healthy activity. And if the weather isn’t kind you can still create a picnic atmosphere indoors. You could even try a ‘carpet picnic’ at home. Kids love them!

Midsummer’s Day T

HE longest day of the year comes all too soon in my opinion. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again. It’s all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August. This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer’s Day has become. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs.

Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun - celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the rising of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge. Midsummer’s Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves. Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer’s Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York.

Motoring Mayhem

T

HOSE of you that have needed an MOT within the last few months must have noticed that the style and layout of the MOT test certificate has changed. That’s because the old computerised MOT scheme that had been in use for over 10 years has been changed to a web based system. The transition has not been easy as the old non web based service worked very well but was deemed too expensive for the government to administer, so after months of trials the new system was introduced last year. Almost immediately the whole system crashed leaving frustrated garage owners unable to test. As we were among the last of the garages to have to adopt the new system we had a relatively easy time compared to some with only a few system crashes. Since its introduction there have been almost continuous updates to try and iron out bugs. It all seems to be working ok at the moment but it only takes one bug fix to go wrong to send the whole system crashing off into the wilderness. On the whole the new system works well and is fast, the only downside is that some of the features that were on the old system have been omitted or have yet to be included. One of these is the ability to record items on a car that are worn or defective but not considered bad enough to fail. One of these is punctured tyres. Believe it or not a whopping great nail in a tyre is not a ‘reason for failure’ (RFR) only an advisory. Under the old scheme there was a long list of items that were considered advisory including ‘nail in tyre’ that could be ticked from a drop down menu to be then printed at the bottom

66

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

PC

of the MOT certificate. Under the new scheme the position and description of some of the advisory items such as a nail in a tyre has now to be typed in full.

To be honest it hadn’t occurred to me say anything other than what was stuck in the tyre which was quite obviously a screw and not a nail.

So the other day I had a car in for MOT that had a screw in the offside rear tyre. I attempted to remove it but it started to hiss so it had obviously gone right through.

I know that it could be tempting after a frustrating day to use a bit of profanity and I can understand the system filtering out swear words etc., but for goodness sake... screw!

After the test I logged back into the MOT website, entered all the car’s details and then went on to enter the advisory on th RFR screen to warn the owner of the puncture. On the menu there is the ability to enter manual advisories so I clicked on that and a drop box appeared so that I could first enter the position of the fault, in this case offside rear and then went on to type in ‘tyre, screw in tread’. When I pressed ‘enter’ a red drop box appeared with the words ‘Profanity detected in RFR’. When I showed the others in the office we all fell about laughing. Obviously using the word ‘screw’ had triggered something in the system to prevent testers using inappropriate language on test certificates. When I changed the offending word to ‘nail’ the system accepted it.

What if I had been trying to warn of a loose screw in a non testable item such as an engine cover; would the system have made me call it a nail? Talking about political correctness I was chatting to one of my regulars the other day and he mentioned going to Malta on holiday and we discussed how small the island was compared to say the Isle of Wight. He also mentioned that the movie Popeye starring the late Robin Williams was filmed on the island and that you can visit the film set. As a child I used to love the old Popeye cartoon on the TV but along with many programs from that era including the likes of Till Death us do Part, it has fallen foul of the PC brigade and now the only place you can watch them is YouTube, which is odd as it is just as un-PC on there as anywhere else and anyone can watch it including those it may so say offend. Eventually many bits of our unPC history will be completely airbrushed out as if they never happened. I find that all very sad and just because something was racist or sexist in the past doesn’t mean it should be brushed under the carpet and forgotten. I now wait with anticipation to see what innocent word is next to be spat out by my MOT computer.

You can make a real difference

une 2016 will forever go down in history as a time when the people of the UK embraced their European identity by voting to stay in or made a confident step towards securing an independent free UK able to make its own decisions in the world by voting to move out. As tempted as I am, I shall resist the urge to abuse my privileged space in the Town Crier to sway the result either way, suffice to say it’s important we use our votes on the matter in hand. Unlike many other elections, in this case, every vote might well be decisive. It could be your vote that becomes crucial! Migration and the need to control borders, or at least have a say on who is able to live and work in the UK is a key topic in the debate. It’s a very real issue, because as you read this article, thousands of people are still on the move across Europe, many of them without food, shelter or sanitation. It raises significant moral questions about the need to help refugees balanced by the need to protect our country from others that might do us harm. It’s such a big problem, its hard to imagine how we can help. Let me tell you about Francesco Tuccio. He lives on a little island called Lampedusa, which is the most southern territory of Italy, nearer to Africa than Europe. Francesco is a carpenter and a Christian. He went to a Church Service one day in 2013 and was shocked to discover many visitors who were distressed and crying. They were Eritrean survivors of a ship wreck off the coast of Lampedusa that had seen the loss of 300 lives, many of them friends and family. They had been making the dangerous journey to Europe and the ship had capsized. Francesco found himself in the middle of a desperate situation and felt utterly useless. He went to the beach and found parts of the wreckage washed ashore. In an act of compassion and in a bid to understand the situation, he took some pieces of the wreckage home and made tiny crosses out of it to give away to those who were suffering and mourning. A small gesture of love and kindness. It is estimated that 170,000 people migrated to Italy by boat in 2014, and some 153,000 people risked their lives the year after. In 2015, 856,000 people 68

MARCH 2016 The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2016

travelled to Greece in the same way. The numbers are staggering and loss of life has been appalling. Since that day, Francesco has continued to make crosses out of the blistered painted wreckage of boats being washed up on Lampedusa. Every Church on Lampedusa has an altar cross made by him and even the Pope requested a cross too. There is now a Lampedusa Cross in the British museum. The wood came from a boat which capsized off the coast of Lampedusa on 3 October 2013 with the loss of 366 lives. It is a stark reminder of the suffering and loss of life that continues today. Why do I share this story? Because I find Francesco Tuccio inspiring. He did what he could to make a difference. He used the gifts that God had given him, as a carpenter, and showed care and concern, through his skills, to a suffering world. His story brings the plight of many to our attention. His contribution reminds us that the Cross of Jesus is the best object to hold on to when we struggle. Jesus suffered unimaginably on the Cross, not just physically, but emotionally, as the world rejected his message of love. Jesus experienced death itself, but demonstrated through love, that death need not have the final word. Francesco’s cross is empty: it has no figure attached to it. It doesn’t need to. Jesus is risen, alive and calling us to make a difference where we are. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk)

Books

A Good Read

Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume

................................... For a lot of women today Judy Blume books formed an important part of our childhood so it is good to see that they are entertaining a new generation. Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself is one of her least known novels but it’s a gem. It is 1947 and Sally J Freedman is a 10-year-old girl living in New Jersey. Stories of the war in Europe still have an impact on her. She receives the news that her family is moving south to Miami Beach in order to help her sick brother who needs a warmer climate. Sally soon realises that life in the southern states of America is very different to the life she has lived in New Jersey. Segregation is still an issue in the late 1940s and Sally is shocked to discover that a black family on the sleeper train that they are travelling on have been asked to move to a different carriage. In addition to racism the novel also touches on the issue of anti-Semitism. Sally is Jewish and she meets a man living in her building in Miami. She notices a similarity between him and Hitler and becomes convinced that he is indeed Hitler, living out his retirement in America. Although Sally doesn’t realise it he will help her come to terms with the war and the deaths of some of her relatives in the Holocaust. Sally’s imagination is the novel’s playground, as she plays an heroic role in many scenarios which help her cope with the changes in her otherwise mundane life. This is the most autobiographical of Blume’s novels and she has admitted that Sally is her, aged ten. Sally dreams of meeting her favourite Hollywood movie stars, including Esther Williams, and child star Margaret O’Brien. Sometimes as children we face situations we can’t hope to make sense of so Sally turns to her imagination to cope with this difficult year in her life. This is a delightful coming of age novel all about discovering that the world is maybe not how we might want it to be. 70

The Wedding Girl

by Sophie Kinsella

............................................................................................... Sophie Kinsella is best known for her Shopaholic series of books, but it is well worth reading this older novel, first published in 1999 under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. Milly is about to marry the man of her dreams. The son of a successful millionaire business man, her future seems assured. Okay, so Simon and his father don’t get on, and he insists on making his own way in the world without any help, but he dotes on Milly and she loves him. A society wedding is planned complete with giant marquee, oysters, a cake which arrives in 10 boxes, and two giant ice swans. But then the wedding photographer arrives to stay at her parents’ B&B. He and Milly recognise each other, though at first she doesn’t know from where. When the penny drops Milly is struck with fear. A chance encounter on a college lawn in Oxford ten years ago when she was a naïve 18-year-old had led to a rash decision which now has ramifications and threatens to bring her dream wedding crashing down. Can she find a way to fix this, or will she have to tell Simon the truth? A slow burner that picks up pace as it progresses. In Milly the author created a very different protagonist compared with Becky in her later Shopaholic books. Milly has flaws so she’s less immediately likeable than Becky. And the novel lacks some of the frivolity of the classic chic-lit genre but this is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is interesting to see how an author’s style develops with time.

Don’t tell me to count Sheep !!! It’s three in the morning and I can’t stop yawning – I’m sleepless the whole damned night through! Insomnia’s got me, wish someone had shot me, Now tell me what am I to do ? I’ve taken a pill, counted sheep on a hill, And still sleep won’t creep up on me. Now it’s almost the morning, My jaws ache with yawning – what a sight by tomorrow I’ll be ! Last night I prowled down the house all around Washing dishes around two a.m. I cleaned out the loo, then for something to do – I washed all the dishes again ! Still wide awake – I decided to bake, And with flour all over the floor, I felt kind of sleepy – and would you believe it – It’s three in the morning once more ! My mind’s now made up and in my cocoa cup – Tonight will be one massive pill! It should put me to sleep the best part of a week – Either that or I’ll be proper ill. I’m tired and forlorn, fed up seeing the dawn, And all that I want is my bed. So when three next comes round, DON’T disturb me, I’m sound! (Either that – or I’m bloody well DEAD !!!) ......
