Andy Comley goes back to his roots Singer-songwriter Andy Comley has moved out of the usual venues and headed back to his roots, by embarking on a tour of rural halls.

Ellie and Gillian Farago with Deputy Mayor of Calne, Councillor Trotman at the official opening.

Heritage Bed and Breakfast opens

Heritage Bed and Breakfast in Calne Heritage Quarter was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Calne, Councillor Tony Trotman on 31st January 2017. Proprietors Ellie and Gillian Farago have spent over two years carrying out a complete renovation of the building. See page 32 for full story.

However he also has artistic reasons for moving out of the town. “I want an intimate atmosphere for my music, where there's no distraction, and the audience can focus and be transported musically, and I’ve found it in small rural halls”

Calne Secondary Modern Reunion

The gigs are sit down-lights out-spotlight on affairs, and Andy says that this format makes for an immersive evening for the audience and performer alike. “People have been responding really well and we’ve had some really great feedback.”

Former pupils who started in 1958-1963 are holding a Reunion on Saturday 29th April at the Lansdowne Hotel at 7.30pm Contact Patrick Murphy 07595 503509

Andy will be playing with double bassist Dave Bulbeck at Aldbourne Memorial Hall on Saturday 11th March 2017. Doors open at 19:00 for 19:45 start. Advanced tickets only, £10 online at www.andycomley.com.

You cannot ignore the fact that we are all getting older and nearly one in three people in the UK will live to see their 100th birthday! With this in mind, it is important to choose how you take your retirement benefit and think about your needs both in the early years and later years of your retirement. Your circumstances may change during your retirement due to ill health or divorce so flexibility is important plus with the nation getting older, your income may need to last much longer than you anticipate. Today’s retirees spend £1,084 per month on essentials (services, fuel, transport, housing and food). According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research's (CeBR), this is set to increase to £2,930 per month, or £35,500 per annum, by 2050, an increase of 148%! Potential pension options include: • Guaranteed Income – receive a set amount of income for life • Get flexible access to your savings – take the income you need, when you need it

Calne Rotary Classic Car Run Sunday 21st May 2017

Between 8am and 9.30am on Sunday 21st May one hundred Classic Cars will gather in Calne Leisure Centre Car park for a bacon butty provided by Calne Lions before setting off for a fascinating 65 mile run through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.

Stopping for refreshments at Westbury Country Park and then onto Bradford on Avon to finish with a wonderful lunch provided by the Marden Belles WI in the fantastic

grounds of Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley. With further support on the day being provided by Rotarians and a great team of volunteers, the event will be a true community effort. The car run also features VIP Teddy Bears and dogs in some of the cars. Half the proceeds will go to Dorothy House Hospice Care (DHHC) and half to local charities. Jenny Steele, Head of Communications at DHHC said “We are delighted to be a chosen Charity by Calne Rotarians for a second year. The run travels through towns and villages that make up the hospice’s 700 sq. mile area and the money raised will go directly towards care for patients, their families and carers at a time when it is needed most. The trail of cars was a magnificent spectacle last year and we know that this year will be even better. We would like to thank everyone involved and wish them safe travels.” The event is still looking for more drivers and Kate Tompkins of the Rotary Club of Calne said “If you have a pre-1990 classic car come and join us for a great day out and to raise money for some great causes” The Rotary Club of Calne meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm in Calne - www.calnerotary.co.uk.

Get snapping to create a heli moasic at new airbase WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance has come up with a fun and innovative way of raising funds for its new airbase. The charity is creating a mosaic of photographs in the shape of a helicopter to be displayed outside its new airbase at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham. “Our new airbase is everyone’s airbase and the heli mosaic will have pride of place at it. We have many supporters and well wishers and we wanted to offer them an opportunity to be part of the new airbase and the heli mosaic is a fun way to become involved. Your photo can be a selfie or something that holds a special memory for you. “As well as people feeling connected to Wiltshire Air Ambulance, the funds raised will go towards completing the building and equipping of the airbase so please send in your snaps and help us reach our fundraising target. The mosaic could raise a fantastic £40,000 if we get 2,000 photos.” Everyone who submits a photo will be entered into a draw to win one of six VIP visits to the airbase once it is completed. All photos must be submitted by 31 December 2017 and the draw will be made on 30 April 2018. Photos can be uploaded directly on to the special airbase appeal website – www.wiltshireairbaseappeal. co.uk People must be over 16 years of age to submit a photograph. The Airbase Appeal is to raise the remaining £1.25 million needed to complete the building and equipping of the new airbase.

AZELWOOD BEAUTY, based in Sutton Benger, near Chippenham but serving clients from across Wiltshire, is on the move – to a new bespoke clinic on the same site. Creative Director Sam Francome is proud to announce that construction of the purposebuilt new beauty salon is almost completed. It was more than 15 years ago that Sam first moved her mobile beauty business into a clinic on the current site. Since then, customers have enjoyed their treatments in the cosy atmosphere of The Old Farmhouse on the Seagry Road. “Step-by-step the business has grown and grown until we were simply bursting at the seams,” explained Sam. “We’ve cherry picked all the things our clients loved about the farmhouse and incorporated them into the design of the new building, which is just across the yard. We were able to demolish the stables and recreate a dedicated space.” 24

“Not only do we have a new salon, but we are also finalists in this year’s National Beauty Professionals Awards,” enthused Sam, “and I’m about to be blessed with two new hips - 2017 is a proving to be a really exciting and ‘hip’ year!”

Built of local stone and wood, with interior stone and oak features, the salon will open to clients in the early spring. The new building offers: • a comfortable reception and retail area downstairs where clients can relax before and after appointments. • a treatment room for those who cannot manage the stairs.

The Dancing Academy Are you interested in keeping fit and active – while doing something fun and learning a new skill? Are you interested in revisiting dancing but haven’t done it for while? Are your children interested in dance and don’t know where to go for classes? Please consider The Dancing Academy which was set up by dance teacher Samantha Reed in 2008 and operates from Foundry Lane, Chippenham, Wiltshire.

It provides classes in classical ballet, baby ballet, adult ballet, tap, street and modern dance as well as offering musical theatre, singing, drama and Pilates. Currently about 250 adults and children attend the academy each week. The business was set up by Samantha when she gave up her corporate career for a software company and took a gamble on following her life’s passion for dance. She had been offered the opportunity to achieve a higher level teaching qualification at the Royal Academy of Dance in London and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. She started The Dancing Academy in her home with three young students who at the time were aged two and three. They are still dancing with her today. Very quickly she realised she had an aptitude for teaching dance and for sharing her joy of dancing with people of all ages and abilities. Her initial vision was to provide a space where students could learn classical ballet. However, she realised students and adults like to take part in many forms of dance. She moved her classes into school

and church halls for the extra space, then in 2009 took on her first premises in Monkton Park, Chippenham. Within two years, the academy had outgrown that space and Sam took over a bigger studio in Foundry Lane, Chippenham where she’s been based ever since. The Dancing Academy – or DA as it’s lovingly known – is famous locally for its summer school and for its professional bi-annual productions. www.thedancingacademy.co.uk Top: Dancing Academy students at Chippenham Christmas lights. Mother’s Day

T

HIS year we celebrate Mother’s Day on 26 March. You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering ‘or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion. The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more.

A Chippenham charity shop is celebrating a big boost in the number of donations received last year. Barnardo’s opened a store in Lodge Road, next to the Tesco Express in Pewsham, in 2013. In 2015 the team received more than 5,500 bags of donations, but last year the figure jumped by more than a third to almost 7,600. It also received more than 3,800 hours of support from local volunteers during the same period. Manager Sue Coles has been delighted by the store’s growing popularity and success. She said: “In the early days there were several staff changes which meant we sometimes suffered from inconsistent opening hours, but everything has settled and we now have a permanent team in place. The number of donations seems to be growing year-on-year which is a great reflection on the generosity and support of the local community.” Sue added: “We’re so lucky to have such a fantastic team of volunteers from teenagers to the retired. “Everyone says how friendly we are, and we’ve even been surprised by gifts of chocolates, flower and biscuits from appreciative donors and shoppers. It’s great that we’re able to enjoy our work while raising money for such a good cause.” The Barnardo’s store is open seven days a week and welcomes donations of good-quality clothes, books, DVDs, toys, games, accessories and homeware, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers. Call (01249) 445524 or visit www.barnardos.org.uk/ volunteering Last year the charity supported 248,000 children, young people and families through more than 990 services across the UK.

Celebrities visit Pewsham Locks

C

by Val Melville, Wilts & Berks Canal Trust

HARMING actor Nigel Havers, Shakespearian specialist Simon Cowell, Loose Women panellist Lorraine Chase, and TV star Debbie McGee are four famous faces recently seen near Chippenham, who recently featured on a new Channel 5 reality show ‘Celebrity Carry On Barging’.

In November 2016, they were filmed visiting the important industrial heritage site of Pewsham Locks just south of Chippenham, between Pewsham estate and Lacock. The visit was one aspect of a trip the four celebrities (plus dog Alfie) took along the Kennet & Avon Canal, when they attempted to navigate a narrow boat along the restored waterway for the first time, getting to grips with mooring, steering, cooking on-board and local swans. See item: https://www.rts.org.uk/article/brand-newcelebrity-barging-show-commissionedchannel-5 The visit was aired on Channel 5 as part of a series of four programmes at peak time on Friday evenings, helped to publicise this exciting and important local restoration project. Simon Callow, being very interested in heritage, had asked to visit a restoration site, and so the visit to Pewsham Locks was arranged after Channel 5 producers approached Dave Maloney, chair of the Melksham, Calne & Chippenham Branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. Malcolm Hitchinson who organised the day said: “We were delighted to welcome the four celebrities, plus dog, plus film crew to Pewsham Locks. It is a fascinating site which used to be the centre of much canal activity: three locks to negotiate, a lock cottage for the canal agent, a dry dock and workshop for boat building and repairs, a sawpit and a lime kiln. Simon and Nigel were incredibly interested in everything they saw, and really empathised with the lives of the boat people who must have passed through here. They 34

even mused about the opportunity for creating a rich historical drama, especially as they were becoming so interested through their own experiences of travelling along the Kennet & Avon Canal.” Lorraine and Debbie were fascinated to hear about the fantastic work achieved by the brilliant local volunteers, and were very interested in how the trust attracted new volunteers. Both were particularly interested in wildlife, Lorraine’s ambition being to see a kingfisher. Volunteers Ray Canter and Jeff Dawes had the challenging job of making bricks, leaks and bank erosion into riveting conversation pieces. Ray said: “Both ladies were absolutely lovely, and time just flew by. They were chatty, enthusiastic, not at all worried about keeping up appearances, and really interested in absolutely everything, although the number of people on the towpath did rather reduce our chances of seeing a kingfisher on that particular day.” The original idea was for the celebrities to actually get involved in the restoration (a bit like Michael Portillo), but this was shelved on the day due to lack of time. Malcolm added: “It was quite a challenge to think of a safe, accessible, interesting task which would only take a short time, but in the event, they were so interested to see and discuss all aspects of the site, that all our preparations were unnecessary. Never mind, they may come back and volunteer for us in the future – we gave them all a membership leaflet, so you never know!” The Wilts & Berks Trust is always delighted to welcome new members and volunteers to help with this amazing community project. The Pewsham Locks site is part of a national Heritage Heroes Project in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and Help for Heroes, funded by a grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery. – TRAVEL GUIDE –

New York City

W

HAT’S left to say about The Big City? The famed sidewalks bellow smoke, and prisms of light scatter through the myriad towers and skyscrapers, casting long shadows over the millions of souls hurrying about below. New York is a global city with very few comparisons. New York City can only truly be understood through its five historic boroughs, as each distinct area has a character and charm all its own. Central to them all is Manhattan, the island city with a population of more than 1.5 million. On weekdays, Manhattan sees an influx of workers and tourists that more than doubles that number to nearly 4 million people - that's over 170,000 per square mile. When you can get a millimetre of pavement to yourself, treading New York’s sidewalks is an endlessly fascinating exercise. One minute you’re in a scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the next you’re Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver, or walking down Jones Street feeling like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan darting for Greenwich Village. Built by migrants, New York has always been a meeting place for world cultures, a port city welcoming arrivals to the shining beacon of the Statue of Liberty. It's a place where you can still experience the frenetic buzz of Chinatown, a wealth of black culture in Harlem and the aromatic flavours of Little Italy along Mulberry Street, all in the one afternoon. Bewildered and wondering where to start? When it comes to travelling to New York City, it might be one of the best connected metropolises in the world, served by not one but three international airports: JFK, La Guardia and Newark Liberty. Getting around New York is a breeze too, with help from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and its well-connected system of buses, trains, bridges, tunnels and 24-hour subway service which, all together, claim more than 11 million passenger journeys on an average weekday. Otherwise an iconic yellow taxi can whisk you downtown in a sea of horns and flashing lights - elbows out if you want to catch a ride at rush hour though. 42

ROATIA is an incredible country to visit with an vast amount of natural beauty, history and culture to take in. However, with literally hundreds of islands and a complex schedule of ferries connecting them as well as 8 main airports in the country, it can be said that Croatia is not the easiest destination to navigate around. As 'Tailor-Made Specialists', we pride ourselves on having the expert knowledge and experience to make your trip to Croatia as easy and fulfilling as possible. Whilst we are more than happy to provide you with a standard, single destination package holiday at great prices, we can truly add value for your tailormade holiday, whatever it may be. Cyplon Holidays offers a variety of hand-picked cruise itineraries with all of the cruise ships having no more than 19 cabins, resulting in a peaceful and private cruise, whereby passengers will receive an intimate experience of the Adriatic Sea and the islands being visited . ISLAND HOPPING Island hopping is another popular way of getting round Croatia and experiencing as much as possible, and unlike with a cruise, you can choose to stay in a particular place for as long or as short as you wish. With so many islands to choose from, we have attempted to make life a little easier

by offering a selection of set island hopping itineraries, however we are more than happy to tailor-make an itinerary for you from scratch based on your exact wishes. GUIDED TOURS Sometimes the best way to explore a country and get to fully understand the finer points that not many people get to see or know is by taking a guided tour. With our guided tours, you will visit parts of Croatia and its neighbouring countries that you never knew existed and will be surprised and amazed by the region's hidden gems. As with all of our holidays we offer flexibility and a stay can be added before or after you tour. CROATIA AND MONTENEGRO MULTI-CENTRES In recent years Croatia's popularity as a tourist destination has risen dramatically and the country and everything it has to offer has become well known . However Croatia's neighbour, Montenegro, remains relatively undiscovered. However this will not last for long as Montenegro offers outstanding natural beauty and first class hotels that are just waiting to be discovered. That is why we are offering a small programme to Montenegro which can also be twinned with Croatia for a truly unforgettable twincentre holiday.

Beauty Expertise

Spring is in the air! By Kelly Shaw

S

PRING is in the air, and if you are anything like me you will be awakening from your winter cocoon desperately hoping for some muchneeded sunshine! I find this time of year can also bring a host of new pressures with it. I always feel the need to “Spring Clean” every aspect of my life, from the house to the garden and eventually ME! If you enjoy getting your home looking its best, then the hard work of spring cleaning and gardening may have left your nails and hands rather worse for wear. Try to keep your hands really moisturised during this time and invest in a good quality cuticle oil; it’s essential to nourish nails and keep them healthy. I’d recommend using it daily for the best results; I keep mine on my bedside cabinet and apply just before bed, that way it soaks right in and you don’t wash it off again. Water damage can also be a problem for your nails if you are spending a lot of time with wet hands, so consider some gloves for gardening or cleaning tasks. This is also a great time to start preparing your feet for flip flops, strappy shoes and sandals. Regular foot care routines will get your feet in good shape in no time, so why not start with the skincare – use a pumice stone and bristle brush with hot soapy water to keep your feet smooth and hard skin under control (very important when wearing summer shoes). You may need to do several sessions of skincare to get your feet sorted, so this is another good reason to start sooner rather than later. Follow up with a rich moisturiser to take care of both skin and nails. Then

trim, buff and shape your toenails – they are far more likely to be on display during summer months, so why not finish up with a brightly-coloured polish? Shape toes and neaten cuticles the same way you would for your fingernails, and if all that sounds like too much hard work then seek out a professional for a pedicure. Not only will your feet look amazing but it’s also a great little treat for you, and once they’ve done all the hard work you can just maintain the results at home. It’s also the perfect time to spring clean your skincare and make-up products. The first thing you must throw away is any leftover SPF from last year. The ingredients that actually protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays only have a 12-month shelf life. Is it really worth scrimping to get the dregs from last year’s holiday leftovers? This is your skin we are talking about and you only get one! It may also be time to look at your home skincare regime and move away from the richer moisturisers needed in winter to something more lightweight. Your skin changes with the seasons so do seek professional advice if you find that your current products are no longer working for you. I love this time of year; it’s full of possibilities and always seems like such a healthy time of year to me. It’s the perfect time to start getting outside more, which is hugely important for our wellbeing and to eat and feel healthy again. So what if you didn’t stick to any New Year resolutions this year, get out and enjoy the fresh air, be active and take a deep breath – do you smell it? That’s Spring and it’s fantastic! Health Matters

Working Together

W

by Emmy Butcher

E recently undertook a Staff Survey here at the Surgery which showed that 100% of our employees felt proud to work at Beversbrook Medical Centre. Considering the bashing the NHS is getting in the press recently I feel this is a major achievement. The most ludicrous story I heard was that GPs are taking three hour lunch breaks. It was funny because anyone who has ever worked in a GP surgery will tell you that the nearest a GP gets to a lunch break is when sandwiches are provided in a clinical meeting or whilst they are in their car on their way to a home visit. What the newspaper was referring to of course is nothing like the reality of any GP Surgery I know. Your average GP clinics often finish around 12.30 am and start again at 3.00 pm. Sounds like a nice long break until you realise that the time in between these clinics is where GPs carry out home visits or care home ward rounds, catch up on phone calls to patients, read clinical letters, dictate referral letters, deal with repeat prescriptions and check test results. It’s quite usual for my GPs to start work before 8.00 am and go home after 8.00 pm - this is common across Primary Care. The news is full of reports about there being a crisis in the NHS without explaining much more about what is really going on. These kinds of reports cause concern for GP Surgeries up and down the Country who worry about talking to their patients about the problem just in case it causes a panic and might stop those people who really need to see a GP from making an appointment. Another fear is that patients may think that it is only their Practice that is suffering but the reality is that all Practices country-wide are facing the same issues. The problem is simple, modern medicine is fantastic! In fact, it’s so good that we are living a lot longer than our ancestors and this creates population growth. In addition, there is currently a workforce crisis with more GPs taking early retirement and fewer doctors’ choosing to work in Primary Care, add this to the pressures being faced by hospitals with shortages of beds and overflowing A&E departments and you have the perfect storm.

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

It’s important that Patients work with their GP Practices to overcome the current challenge. Over the years we have become used to working with shorter and shorter resources. Practice Managers have become adept at delegating work so that GPs can look after patients more effectively, by training specialist Receptionists to assist with GP admin and recruiting nurses and nurse practitioners to help spread the clinical workload. But it’s the help from our Patients which will have the biggest impact. There is no cure for the common cold, most patients understand this but often when symptoms last longer than usual or are severe enough to warrant a day off work it can be concerning. Of course, your GP can give you advice regarding how to manage minor ailments such as coughs and colds but so too can your Pharmacist who can also advise you on the best over the counter medicines and how to use ‘Self Care’ to get better. You may be surprised about the kinds of symptoms you can actually treat at home and there are lots of online resources to help you. The Self Care Forum has an excellent website www.selfcareforum.org with factsheets on all kinds of ailments from acne to urine infections, with instructions on how to look after yourself at home and when you should seek advice from a healthcare professional. The NHS Choices website www.NHS.uk is one of my favourites too. Some Practices in Chippenham and Calne have their own online symptom checker, Doctor Link, to help patients make decisions about how to treat their symptoms. If your Practice does not have this service, you can try the Patient UK website - www.Patient. co.uk, which is easy to use and gives sensible advice. If you are online, why not order your medication that way too? You can also cancel and book appointments and view your own medical records (including test results) through your surgeries’ online service. Speak to your Receptionist if you aren’t already registered. If you do need to see your GP, it helps to be prepared. Book in advance if you can and write a list of your symptoms to help give an accurate history. You may need a double appointment if you feel you have several issues. Let us know if you are not going to be able

to make your appointment so we can then offer it to someone else and please be a patient Patient if you are sat in the waiting room a little longer than expected. Clinics run late because our Doctors treat patients in order of clinical need. Most patients appreciate that whilst a longer wait is inconvenient, one day it may be them or their loved ones who need priority attention from the GP. If we all join the fight to save Primary Care and use it responsibly then I think we will soon find ourselves in calmer waters. Managing a crisis is what we Practice Managers do best – we are after all hardy characters fuelled by Jaffa Cakes and a determined go-getting attitude! Gosh, I do hope we don’t run out of Jaffa Cakes – better stock up in preparation …. oh dear!

Save Your Sight! by Angela Fitzpatrick

M

OST people don’t think about their eyes much until something goes wrong. It’s important to understand what happens to our eyes as we age. Your optometrist does so much more than provide spectacles. The following conditions are all detectable by optometrists during a routine eye examination. Cataracts These are caused by clouding of the lens inside the eye. They are not painful but vision may be smudged or blurry. Diabetics and those taking certain medications are more at risk, but in most cases they are caused by old age. Most cataracts may be treated successfully by surgical removal then replacing the cloudy lens with a clear, artificial one. Glaucoma This is a condition in which the optic nerve at the back of the eye is damaged. It is usually though not always, caused by raised pressure inside the eyeball. 99% of Glaucoma sufferers experience no symptoms until 52

significant damage to their sight has occurred. The risk becomes more significant once you are over 40 and it increases with age. Anyone with a family history of the disease is more at risk, along with diabetics, very short-sighted people and anyone from an AfroCaribbean background. If detected early Glaucoma can be controlled with eye-drops, and in some cases surgery. Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) This happens when the delicate ‘seeing-cells’ at the back of the eye stop working. It usually affects both eyes. The risk of getting it increases with age but poor diet, too much sun-exposure and smoking are all contributory factors. You are also more at risk if there is a family history of the condition. There are two types: Wet AMD is rarer and can be treated if caught early, and dry AMD, which is currently untreatable. The progress of dry AMD may be slowed by increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables consumed and by stopping smoking.

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

Diabetes This is not an eye disease but eye problems are among its most significant complications. An optometrist will check for signs that the blood vessels of the eye are leaking or not working properly. If problems are discovered then you will be referred for laser treatment at your local hospital. Even if you are not Diabetic and your eyesight seems fine it is important to have the health of your eyes checked at least once every two years, as changes may happen without you realising. Remember… Unlike teeth, eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong. Generally, the earlier an eye problem is detected, the easier it is to treat. If you drive, it is your responsibility to make sure you satisfy the legal visual requirements. Book an eye examination today.

You have just one pair of eyes, and they have to last you a lifetime, so take care of them.

Pet Health

Spring Capers … by Danielle Giles, Heathside Veterinary Surgery www.heathsidevets.co.uk

H

AVE you ever considered how important play is to the well-being of your pet? Or how important it is to let your dog stop and sniff every 'peemail' on his favourite walk? To allow your cat to scratch his post or to give your rabbit the space to binky free? Of course you have, that is why you have chosen to read this article.

There are other numerous activities that we can do to stimulate our dogs grey matter. Training classes engage your pet’s attention with sit and stay, heel work, find and retrieve etc. The point is you are engaging your dog to 'think' about what he or she is being asked to do and that can be equally as satisfying as a romp in the countryside.

Let me put it in a nut shell, in order for pets to lead a healthy balanced life it is as important to socialise and mentally stimulate them as it is to exercise those active bodies.

You could try harnessing that keen sense of smell to brain train your pooch into happier companions. Try using treat dispensers where your dog must work at getting the treat out; hide their favourite toy and send your dog off to find it, a tit-bit being his reward; how about good old fashioned hide and seek? You will be amazed how engaged your dog can become with a little use of your own grey matter!

Of course, there are many headings under which animal welfare needs are classified; suitable place to live, suitable diet, to be protected from injury and pain, protection from suffering and disease to mention just a few. For me for an animal to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns is as important as any of those above, thus removing some of the day to day stresses our pets experience. We all love to walk our dogs but have you considered what else that walk does other than keep those pounds off and those inches at bay? Dogs as we know have a keen sense of smell and this gives us a wide scope with which to mentally stimulate our canine friends. By allowing him to stop and sniff every ‘peemail’ you are allowing him to read who is in the neighbourhood, friend or foe! An important trait of wild dogs, you are allowing him to be himself...a dog. Take in different walks with different smells; different locations with different activities to get involved in; take a doggie companion along too and watch your dog have fun socialising. Happy in his activities, tongue lolling, tail wagging; don't you just feel happier yourself? Most companion animals are sentient creatures capable of experiencing positive feelings such as contentment. But they can also experience negative feelings such as pain and frustration. So, is mental stimulation not just as important as physical stimulation? Think about it... 54

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

Cats are no different. Although you may have to be a little more cunning in engaging your cat. Playing chase games replicates the desire for a cat to stalk, pounce and attack even if it is just a feather on a stick! Back legging the stuffing out of a bag filled with cat nip sends him into cat ecstasy. Encouraging your cat to simply be a cat improves his live immeasurably. Regularly getting active keeps kitty's waistline trim, his mind stimulated and improves the bond between owner and cat too. Rabbit owners too realise that their sociable pets soon become bored without stimulus and companionship. By enriching their environment to encourage rabbits to do what comes naturally (such as digging, nesting, burrowing) you may be rewarded with wonderful binky jumps; a sure sign of happiness in the world of the Lago. Physical and mental stimulation should go paw in paw. They will improve the wellbeing and health of your companion animal (and probably save your house and garden from total destruction). Owning a pet and spending time creatively with them can seriously improve our own mental health and can give us our sense of fun back too. Now that's what I call a double whammy!

2017 Ford Kuga by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - @carwriteups

HE new Ford Kuga is a delight to drive. I should know, as I spent 24 hours in one motoring from Warsaw in Poland to Vilnius in Lithuania. And let me tell you, Eastern Europe’s roads are not as kind to cars as Britain’s are – and that’s saying something. Many of the roads in Poland and Lithuania are peppered with potholes, broken up by the odd stretch of motorway, but often with roadworks. The new Kuga made light work of the potholes, due to its excellent suspension and wellpadded seats. The only real grumble came from the car’s petrol engine. My Kuga was fitted with the 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine, in four-wheel-drive 182PS guise. It returns 38.2mpg and 171g/km of CO2, and it’s quite noisy when you put your foot down for overtakes. That said; the melodramatics are soon over, and the car is happy to settle into a less raucous cruise when it sees the open road ahead. Inside, the Kuga’s cabin is cleaner – in the sense that there aren’t as many buttons littering the dashboard. An electronic parking brake has also joined the party. Ford’s new Sync 3 system is responsible for doing away with many of the switches. It consists of a large touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. It also enables you to control functions using voice instructions.

56

While it’s really a face-lift, the new Kuga does have some new stuff going on underneath the bonnet, too. There is a new 120PS 1.5-litre TDCi diesel unit with front-wheeldrive, which delivers up to 64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2. If you prefer more clout, there is a 2.0-litre TDCi engine with 150bhp, and you can choose to have it with all-wheeldrive or front-wheel drive. This variant will return up to 60.1mpg, while emitting 122g/km of CO2. If you want even further power, there’s an Intelligent All Wheel Drive version with 180PS. This does 54.3mpg on average and CO2 emissions are135g/km. The 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine stays, and comes in two states of tune – 120PS or 150PS. Finally, as mentioned earlier, the four-wheel-drive 182PS variant of this petrol engine, driven here, returns up to 38.2mpg and emits171g/km of CO2. All-wheel-drive Kugas, like the one I drove, also include semiautonomous Perpendicular Parking tech. This helps you to park, without using your hands, in tight spaces alongside other vehicles. I found this particularly useful when trying to park up in a congested area of Warsaw – as you do. The new Kuga can be bought for £20,845 in entry-level Zetec trim, and the Titanium model is priced from £24,245. The ST-Line model is on sale from £25,845, while the more luxury oriented Kuga Vignale

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

comes in at £30,745. The Kuga is an affordable car, if bought at the lower end of the range. It comes well equipped and has enough space for a family of four. The car is comfortable and makes mincemeat out of long trips. The six hours I spent travelling from Warsaw to Vilnius would be gruelling for any car, but the new Kuga coped well, and, more importantly I did, too. Everything in the new Kuga is simple to use, and there are lots of handy storage compartments for things such as cash for toll booths, and cup holders for bottles of water and mugs of coffee. The boot is also a good, square size, and you can load things in easily due to the low load lip. All in all, the new Ford Kuga offers good value for money. It is certainly worth buying or leasing if you need a main car that isn’t too big, yet is large enough to cope with a family of four. In four-wheel-drive guise it also turns into a useful tool for the winter months – something many parents, like me, will find invaluable on frosty school-runs using icerink-like rural routes. Gardening

Spring has sprung by Rachael Leverton

T

58

HE other day someone said to me, ‘You are so lucky, you have a beautiful garden.’ I thanked her of course, but I really wanted to say, ‘Luck has very little to do with it. A beautiful garden does not happen by pure chance. It takes a bit of work and planning.’

fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

As the spring equinox looms, the trees blossom and daffodils bloom. The garden is waking up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. I am excited to be outside in it but I’m aware for non-gardeners it can seem daunting when everything (including the weeds) starts growing at once! So where to begin? There are three fairly simple tasks which will get you off to a flying start.

Then a bit of lifting is required. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing.

Pruning is the first task. It’s time to hard prune late-flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is past. Spring flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers

If you have a bit of a slug problem like I do grow them in pots. Pots also have the advantage of protecting the bulbs. I hate slicing through them accidentally when hoeing. And pots mean you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

Finally, stay on top of the weeds from the outset. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. But of course gardening is about planting things and one of the best things to plant now is lilies.

There are loads of varieties to choose from. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because lilies are tall and terracotta provides enough weight to prevent them tipping over. Lilies need a well-drained open planting mixture so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.

From a Crack to a Seam of Gold

F

irst it is a ‘hello’ from me. I am the minister from the Baptist Church in Calne, and as I take up this mantle from Philip Bromiley who has done it so well, I feel more than a little anxious. Over the years many people have come up to me and said, “Have you read Philip’s article in the Town Crier this month? I thought it was really good. You need to read it.” My prayer is that you might find my articles as interesting and helpful as I know many of you have found Philip’s over the years. There is a story told of a servant in India who, each day had to collect the water for his master from the well. He would collect the water in large water jars, which he carried by hanging them each side of a pole which rested on his neck and shoulders like a yoke. The jars were very heavy when full and it was quite a walk to the well. The servant didn’t mind the walk or the work. He just wanted to be faithful to his master. The water jars were once the same. However, if one looked very carefully you could see a crack in one of them which went halfway down the jar. Even so, every day the servant filled them both and carried them to the master’s house. One day at the well the cracked jar broke down in tears. “What’s wrong?” asked the servant. The jar then began to explain to the servant how it felt. It had taken two years to pluck up the courage to say anything. The jar explained how wretched it was feeling. It also felt like it was letting the servant and the master down because every day when filled to the brim it would drip water along the side of the path all the way up to the master’s house, and it was half full when they arrived. The jar went on to explain how inferior it felt compared to the other jar who retained all its water. “I want you to watch what happens as we walk back to the house”, said the servant. As the servant carried the jars back the cracked jar noticed that as it was leaking water there was the

6262

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

most beautiful array of flowers growing all around its side of the path. It also noticed that there were none on the other side. As the servant approached the master’s house he said to the cracked jar, “I always knew about your crack - in fact I made use of it. I planted flower seeds all along the side of the path so that when you dripped your water the seeds would germinate and grow. It has meant that I have been able to pick flowers everyday for the last two years and decorate the master’s table. I couldn’t have done that without your crack. You are unique and I like you just the way you are”. The story reminds me of God. It is exactly the way it is with him - he loves us just the way we are. In fact he is able to use our brokenness and cracks and turn them into something beautiful. We’re like a jar or bowl bought in a junk shop and cleaned up and with God’s help the cracks are repaired and we are put in a place of honour and put to good use. We are if you like ‘reclaimed’ by God so that he can use us to do his will in the world. I read last year about the centuries old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery - called kintsukuroi (“golden repair”). It is done with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold. Beautiful seams of gold glint in the cracks of the ceramics, giving them a unique appearance. You may feel broken or have a crack like the jar and perhaps even feel inferior to others, but God does amazing things with broken people. God can even make good use of the things that are broken within us. Nothing goes to waste with God, and everyone of us is special to him. The cracks can be turned into seams of gold. In offering our lives to God he can restore us and give us a new purpose, God’s purpose. And when we have been cleaned up for a much finer use we need to make sure that we live up to it. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

Springtime Spring

Why do we change the clocks? By Susan Brookes-Morris

I

T’S time to turn the clocks forward an hour at 1 am on 26th March. This time when sunrise and sunset are one hour later on the clock is known as British Summer Time, or Daylight Saving Time. It is believed that the concept was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 in an essay entitled; ‘An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light.’ Ancient civilisations had already been adopting similar concepts however by adjusting their routines in accordance with the sun’s schedules. The first official modern use of Daylight Saving Time was in Ontario in 1908, and several other Canadian cities followed. At around the same time MP Robert Pearce proposed a bill in the House of Commons based on work done by British Builder William Willett around moving the clocks eight times a year to achieve similar results. This was rejected. 64

Germany became the first European country to introduce Daylight Saving Time in April 1916. Its rationale was that the use of artificial light would be reduced and thus there would be more fuel for the war effort. Britain followed shortly after in May 1916. Daylight Saving Time is now utilised in over 70 countries world wide although dates of implementation and clock adjustments vary. The main benefits of Daylight Saving Time are said to be: The opportunity to make better use of natural daylight The ability to conserve energy that would otherwise be used on artificial light A decrease in road accidents because roads are naturally lit during the time when most vehicles are using them Some studies such as one carried out by the Belfast Telegraph also claim that the extra hour

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

of daylight means that tourists stay out longer and spend more money - an extra £6.34 million in Northern Ireland alone. Some are not in favour though. For example, traditional dairy farmers claim Daylight Saving Time disrupts milking routines. This mainly affects developing countries as elsewhere milking is automated. Some research has also shown that there is a greater risk of people having accidents or being the victims of crime because they leave their houses in the morning when it’s still dark. Some studies have suggested that in the first few days after the clocks go forward there are more heart attacks too. Finally for those of us who struggle to remember when we turn the clocks forward and when they go back, this little phrase may help: ‘Spring Forward, Fall Back,’ as the time when clocks go back always happens in the Autumn. This year in the UK, the date when Greenwich Mean Time will begin again is 29th October.

Spring Clean

Decluttering M

the KonMari Way

ARIE Kondo is a Japanese ‘organising consultant’ whose method for decluttering is taking the globe by storm. Called KonMari, the method is actually pretty straightforward. If something you own doesn’t ‘spark joy’, get rid of it. Simple right? KonMari isn’t for everyone, and Kondo certainly has a few somewhat bizarre suggestions. (Seriously, who has the time to unpack every item from their handbag, every evening?) But most of her advice is practical, easy to follow and actually makes a lot of sense. She also dips into the psychology of why we hold on to things, and why we should let them go. Kondo recommends collecting every item in a particular category and going through them in one go. So, for instance, you’d lay every item of clothing you own on the bed or floor, pick up each one and 66

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

if it doesn’t ‘spark joy’ add it the charity pile. With this approach, you get the shock of realising just how much stuff you actually own, and are more likely to discard items than if you just flick through them when they’re in a drawer. She does, of course, make some concessions for items you really need but that don’t particularly spark joy. The main idea is that you should stop hoarding stuff that you might use one day, clothes that you only ever wear when the washing pile is teetering over, and items you feel guilty about getting rid of. Kondo also has some good advice when it comes to what to do with the things you keep. She advises against buying expensive storage solutions, and using shoe boxes to keep things tidy instead. She also recommends storing things vertically, e.g. folding clothes so that they can be stacked on end, meaning you can see them, rather

than having them buried under other items. I’ve found this useful, to an extent. It does mean I can find a black t-shirt easily, but that I might have to unfold several black t-shirts to find the one that has the motif I want. Kondo lives alone, and it does feel sometimes that her method is mainly aimed at other single adults. She recommends leading by example, the idea being that if you get rid of clutter, your family will follow you. That has not yet happened in my house I have to say. Nevertheless, I have got rid of several bin bags and boxes full of ‘stuff ’ since reading her book and have felt surprisingly relieved about doing it. If you fancy trying the KonMari method for yourself, her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, can be ordered from most libraries and book stores.

Choosing a new B

Sofa

UYING a new sofa is a significant financial purchase. Here are a few pointers to help with your decision: Think about what size is most suitable. Proportions are important. For example if you have high ceilings a high backed sofa may look better than a low backed style. A huge sofa in a small room can be overbearing and leave little room for other furniture. In some spaces two smaller sofas or a sofa and arm chair combination will be more aesthetically pleasing than one large one. Consider your comfort when deciding on the overall size too. The height and depth of the seat can make a vast difference. I am relatively short and often find I have to perch near the edge of the seat on some designs in order for my feet to touch the ground. So do try them out. When considering shape and style you need to decide whether you

Fabrics may be cotton-based, velvet and chenille types or microfibre.

want to create a relaxed style or a more formal look. Solid backs and styles such as Chesterfields’ are neater and more traditional, whereas loose-backed and corner sofa arrangements are more contemporary. Corner sofas are also ideal for creating a relaxation space within a large open-plan living space and can save space in smaller rooms. Other differences that can help you decide which style you prefer are arm shape: square, rolled, wide or narrow; the overall line of the sofa, straight or curved; and the design of the legs. There are many options in terms of upholstery: fabric or leather, plain or patterned. Think about durability in terms of the fabric and the look you are trying to create. Even if you decide on leather you will probably still have a choice between natural look, a smoother more even finish, or faux leather instead.

Most designers recommend a plain colour for the main sofa and the use of scatter cushions to add a splash of another colour or patterns. Cushions can be changed more easily if you decide the look needs updating in the future. To aid longevity, choose a sturdy frame with good joinery and springs. You can often get a protective coating applied to your new sofa to help protect against spills too. Finally many new sofas have extra features such as recliner options or built in audio. Or you may want a sofa bed. There’s a lot to consider, so don’t make a hasty decision as most of us keep our sofas for many years.

Jo Deacon

If a thing’s

gonna go ... !

I held my breath all through our Christmas - always scared that the tree lights might blow,

Eventually we traced the problem. The boiler was having a fit!

But my fears all remained sweet unfounded, and they lasted out. Lucky I know! They're all back in the boxes they came in. Stored away with the tinsel and balls, Now the house can back to the “normal”, no more clutter - no more “Deck the Halls!” I have prised all the "snow" off the windows. Vacuumed berries and tree-bits galore. Shrieked with pain as I trod on the holly, and there's drawing pins "lost" on the floor! I was praising myself we'd got through it. No mishaps, nothing bad so to say. What's the saying about pride and falling? Well it's true, as I found out one day! I switched on a lamp one dark evening. With a “pop” we were cast into dark. Fred soon sorted the fuse, found a new bulb to use, and we grinned as we thought “what a lark!” Later on, Fred went up for a shower, and I heard such a blood-curdling yell. So I called up the stairs, "What's up? Are you OK?" and he snapped, "Am I fine - AM I HELL!" With a head full of shampoo, the water, had just all of a sudden run cold. Shampoo suds in his eyes were what led to his cries, as he shivered and sneezed, full of woe! We couldn't think what had just happened. We boiled kettles to rinse off his head. Then we noticed the temperature falling, so fed up, we went off to our bed! We were woken just two hours later, by a deafening almighty row! As we shot up in bed, "What the hell?" we both said. "What the devil is happening now?" The whole bed was shaking, an earthquake we thought, was taking place there so it seemed. I went to the loo, that was vibrating too, (a prayer answered in somebody's dreams!) 68

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2017

We couldn't stop all of the noise though. Were we worried? YES! More than a "bit!" We thought it would wake all the neighbours, so we phoned British Gas and they said They would send out someone in the morning, then advised us to go back to bed! O my, it was cold as the sun rose. A layer of frost lay on the ground. They say Central Heating makes "softies" - another TRUE saying we've found. The engineer came out as they'd promised, repaired it, but after he'd left, The water ran cold an hour later, we were plunged into cold. Left bereft. All in all it took four days to mend it. A small pipe was leaking within. It was right at the back but they found it. Now the heaters are working again. I will never again begrudge paying, the boiler insurance each year. If we didn't have that we'd have paid thousands out, so we're thankful we need have no fear. Of course, when one thing goes, more follow. It seems that's an unwritten rule. First one light bulb will blow, then the rest of them go, now I keep a supply - I'm no fool! Now I can't help keeping my eye on, everything that could suddenly break, The Sky box, the TV, record-player, PC, they're all insured now, make no mistake. But last night as I watched the telly, it flickered a bit, though not long. I turned round to Fred, who just grinned, shook his head, said "Don't panic, it's not going wrong! (I sincerely hope nothing else DOES.) All we need now are birds nesting in the Sky dish and a jet landing on the roof - but what do you know, we are even insured against that too! ................
