Road Safety Week 2016 6 steps to safer driving and protecting lives Five people are killed every single day on Britain’s roads. At Novum Law we know the devastating effects of road traffic accidents and are committed to doing everything we can to make our roads safer. We are supporting Road Safety Week 2016 (21-27 November) organised by road safety charity BRAKE. The charity is urging everyone to make the ‘Brake Pledge’ a promise to drive less and, if you do have to drive, to do everything you can to protect yourself and those around you. Six simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of accidents, save lives, protect families and improve our communities: 1. Slow – Watch your speed. Exceeding the speed limit or travelling too fast for the road conditions is a contributing factor in more than one in four (27%) of fatal crashes. 2. Sober – Don’t drink and drive. Having even one drink before getting behind the wheel can really affect the way you drive. One in seven road deaths involve someone over the limit. 12

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2016

3. Secure – Wear your seatbelt, using one reduces your chances of dying in a road traffic accident by 50%. 4. Silent – Never drive while using a mobile phone. Distracted drivers are three more times likely to crash than non-distracted drivers. 5. Sharp – Get your eyes tested. Road traffic accidents caused by poor driver vision are estimated to cause 2,900 casualties. 6. Sustainable –Try to reduce the amount you drive. Walking, cycling and using public transport makes our communities safer places and improves our health and the environment. Our roads are dangerous, by changing driver behaviour we can help make our villages, towns and cities safer places. To learn about Road Safety Week 2016 and take the Brake Pledge visit: www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk For free, confidential advice please contact our specialist team at: www.novumlaw.com

From Where I’m Standing

An exhibition showcasing new work by ten contemporary ceramicists will be held at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery until 28th January 2017. Entitled ‘From Where I’m Standing’ this new display offers a fresh perspective on Swindon’s collection of modern British art, enabling us to see it through the eyes of ten talented ceramic artists. They are Fenella Elms, Sarah Purvey, Patricia Volk, Keith Varney, Claire Loder, Joanna Still, Sasha Wardell, Mary Jane Evans, Jo Taylor and Peter Hayes. In 2015 this diverse group of artists approached Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, looking for an opportunity to learn more about its wonderful art collection and use it to inspire their work. Over the past year, each artist has selected one or more artworks from the collection and responded by creating a unique ceramic for this show. In most cases the artists have selected paintings, taking the opportunity to respond to two dimensional works using their three dimensional

medium. Meanwhile one artist has been inspired by a much-loved ceramic piece, and another has ventured outside the art gallery to the archaeology collection. This project has provided Swindon Museum and Art Gallery with a special opportunity to work closely with artists from the West Country who have achieved significant national and international reputations, with work in public collections in the UK and abroad.

Each talented artist brings something fresh and unique to contemporary ceramics. From delicate porcelain layers to mixed media sculpture, monumental vessels to figurative abstraction, and refined baroque elegance to natural erosion; their diverse styles and approaches are instantly recognisable. ‘From Where I’m Standing’ will showcase the ten new ceramic pieces created by the participating artists, as well as over thirty works they have selected from Swindon’s collection. Looking for a Quick, Effortless and Affordable way to get rid of those unwanted items accumulating in the House, Garden or Workplace? From shed to bed look no further as MJ Church introduces its professional new service ... AT MJ Church we have recognised that our

conventional Skip Hire does not always suit the demands of people living in the 21st century. Perhaps you don’t want the burden of loading a skip, are physically unable to, or you just simply do not have the time available in your busy life to keep lugging rubbish down to the local recycling centre. We have the solution!

After being transported to one of our 5 recycling centres across the region, it is here that your rubbish will be SORTED. We are able to recycle different materials back into supply chains - plastics are collected and sent for recycling into a huge variety of products from pipes to park benches; woods, metals and other waste streams will be processed and re-used. Anything that cannot be recycled is baled and sent to “Energy from Waste” plants in the UK and Europe. In an eco-friendly process, these nonrecyclables are incinerated and energy is generated either in the form of heat or electricity. This means that almost none of your waste will end up in landfill. Our service offers 2 options – half a load, approximately ½ a tonne in weight at £80 (+VAT) with a 15-minute loading time; or a full load, one tonne in weight at £150 (+VAT) with which we allow a 30-minute loading time. When initially contacting us to book the service, our friendly team will discuss all of your requirements and ensure that the collection teams are well briefed on each job. If you do have large amounts of waste to be removed, we can offer repeat collections or alternatively our dependable Skip Hire service may be the right choice for you.

From as little as £80+VAT the new wecollectyourrubbish.com service offers worry free, waste and rubbish clearance from Chippenham, Calne and surrounding areas. Our professional and trustworthy team will arrive in a branded van at a pre-agreed time, collect and load any waste items ranging from old furniture, household and white goods through to garage junk and garden waste. That old bed upstairs needs dismantling first? No issue, we will arrive tools in hand, ready to do whatever it takes to remove items carefully and efficiently from your property with minimum fuss. Once everything is removed and after a tidy and sweep up, your waste is then ready to start the process of being recycled into its next life ... 22

Dance Teachers join forces to expand prestigious Wiltshire Dance School

W

Latest news from the Dancing Academy

ILTSHIRE dance teachers Samantha Reed and Amy Van Maris have joined forces to take a successful academy to new heights. The pair have become business partners as the school looks to expand its classes and studio space at its premises in Foundry Lane, Chippenham. Samantha has been running the Dancing Academy since 2008 and it has grown from the first three students to teaching more than 300 dancers of all ages every week. In order to continue to grow further Samantha and one of her dancing instructors, Amy Van Maris have decided to form a business partnership. Amy, 26, started dancing at the age of three and was, in her early years, trained by Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman at his school of dance. “He was lovely, like a grandfather figure. He had a good sense of humour and was a great role model as a teacher,” she said. Amy’s career began to take off at the age of 11 with a tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She went on to complete a musical theatre degree at Reynolds Performing Arts College in Kent and other career highlights have included roles in Suessical, The Diary of Anne Frank and Hair. She also worked overseas in Greece choreographing shows for the tourists where she met fellow dancer Lars whom she later married and they now have a one-year-old son. Whilst Amy has continued her dance and teaching career, Lars now trains greyhounds for Swindon racetrack. Amy has been working in Wiltshire for the Dancing Academy for three years teaching pupils a range of disciplines from Latin and jazz, ballroom and ballet.

Amy Van Maris and Samantha Reed, right, who are now business partners at the Dancing Academy Amy said: “I'm so thankful to Samantha for believing in me and giving me such an amazing opportunity. She has built up a very successful dance school with great talent and I'm so happy to be part of it.” The studios in Chippenham are now opening earlier and there are plans to add more Latin and ballroom classes alongside newly launched fitness sessions. The Dancing Academy teaches tots to pensioners in a range of disciplines from singing and drama to tap. Recently two of its pupils were taken on by the Royal Ballet School on its Associate Programme.

care home

We continue to drive our Homes forward to achieve ever higher standards. We recognise training our staff is the key to providing the best care possible. Training also helps staff to achieve their personal goals and to be happy and fulfilled in their work. Residents of Hill House say that it is their ... ‘Home from Home’. Hill House is a Country House set in open countryside once owned by the Chamberlain family. We offer nursing, residential, respite, day care and end of life care.

N

December 2016 will see the opening of the new wing that has large living and dining areas overlooking the Dauntsey Vale. We will have many new features to include community coffee hub, bar, hairdressing salon, nail bar, ensuite shower in each room, large assisted bathrooms, WI FI throughout. The gardens are a magnificent feature of Hill House where you can enjoy peace and tranquillity sat on the terraces.

ORMA & Chad have enjoyed a first class reputation throughout their 26 years of running Firlawn Nursing Home in Holt Wiltshire. Hill House was acquired in 2008 as part of their new care organisation Country Care Homes.

Norma and Chad have recently taken a back seat in the running of the two homes since appointing their Operations Director Anita Hawkes from April 2015. Anita was previously an R.G.N at Firlawn before taking on the position of Matron at Hill House for 7 years.

The success of both Homes can be measured by the many letters of thanks that have been received as well as recommendations that both Hill House and Firlawn get from local Health Care Professionals and the Community.

The Manager of Hill House is Donna Hughes who worked at Firlawn for 15 years before working at both Homes as Training Manager for a further 7 years. She was appointed Manager of Hill House in April 2015.

“Person centred care sees residents as equal partners in planning, developing and assessing care to make sure it is the most appropriate for their needs. It involves putting residents and their families at the heart of all decisions.”

Norma & Chad Doveton

We have introduced a new person centred software system to ensure a high standard of record keeping and enabling staff to spend more time with residents. Our Activities Team arrange a programme which is designed to enable the residents to enjoy their daily life. We spend time to get to know individual needs and preferences. Our catering team is led by a Head Chef who attends Residents’ meetings to discuss menus so that food offered reflects the resident’s wishes.

We had a good turnout of 16 people. We walked from the Wharf in Devizes to The Three Magpies in Seend and back again. A round trip of 7.5 miles. Luckily the weather stayed dry for us and a very enjoyable day. So far, we have raised nearly £400 towards this good cause and still counting. CHRISTMAS CARD DELIVER 1ST CALNE SCOUTS

A WILTSHIRE gymnast has won a silver medal in a national competition after overcoming a series of personal challenges. Millie Strange, aged just 15 years old, came second in the Womens Junior All-Around section of the British Disability Artistic Gymnastics Championship.

She had to compete across the vault, asymmetric bars, balance beam and floor during the competition at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. It was her first entry in the championship - but her achievement is even more remarkable because she only took up the sport three years ago after recovering from multiple operations. Millie was born with her left foot facing the wrong way and the leg was six inches shorter than the other. She had to undergo more than 20 corrective surgeries, including having screws inserted along the length of her leg which were then regularly turned with a spanner to extend the bones. Millie, a member of Chippenham Moonraker Gymnastics Club, said: “I started doing gymnastics because my twin sister had already joined the club and was having lots of fun, and I thought it would help with my recovery and the movement in my leg. I never thought I’d enter a national championship but I really enjoyed it. I didn’t expect to win anything but my routines went quite well, and I was so happy and proud when the scores came through and I realised that I was going to receive a silver medal. When I returned to the club there were lots of nice comments from the other girls - and they’d even bought me some sweets! The coaches are all so friendly and nice, and I’m so grateful for their support. Gymnastics is a great way to keep fit and make friends.”

It’s just around the corner...

...Christmas that is!

N

OW we all know someone who buys their prezzies in the January sales, has their cards written and addressed by Easter and their turkey ordered before the first frost. We hate their smugness and lack of proper festive spirit but mainly we hate them because we know that we could never ever be that organised ... until now!

Who’s coming to dinner? Are there any vegetarians, vegans or dairy intolerances among your guests. Are you planning a party? List all the food, alcohol and gift items you think you will need and add to it as you go along. Study your list Are there items which can be bought online? Do any of your local shops offer home delivery? Look into local veg-box schemes. Divide the remaining list into manageable chunks and purchase a few things each week. For foodstuffs, begin with items which can be frozen and end with the fresh items which need to be purchased just a day or two before. Puds and cakes Make these early to give them time to mature. Stir up Sunday is the last Sunday before advent and this year is on November 30th. This is traditionally the time when Christmas puddings are made. I make my Christmas cake during

the first week of December which gives me time to feed it as much brandy as it will hold. Yum! Write the cards It’s bit of a chore but put the carols on, pour a glass of something festive and get into the spirit. You’ll feel really virtuous when they’re done. Tree lights and outdoor lights Test them well in advance so they can be replaced if necessary. Check bed and linen status! Will you need to buy or borrow fold-up beds, or extra bedding for your guests? What about elderly guests? They may be able to lie down on a Z bed but will they ever be able to get up again! By now you should be feeling organised and in control. You may even feel the beginnings of a smug smile twitch at the corners of your mouth. Enjoy it ... you earned it!

by Louise Addison

We’re not suggesting that you start planning Christmas while on your summer holidays but it does pay to be a little bit organised. You’ll arrive at December 25th with far fewer grey hairs and much lower blood pressure if you plan ahead. Clear out food cupboards Be ruthless. Chuck out all the outof-date items and things you know will never be eaten. Make room for all those festive goodies. Clear out toy cupboards Be ruthless. Involve the kids. Donate outgrown and unplayedwith items to charity. If you are an eBayer, spend an afternoon listing items for sale. Order meat early Farmers’ markets and shops are teeming at this Christmas time. Don’t imagine you’ll get what you want if you leave it until the last minute. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2016

Marlborough Artists approached Wiltshire Air Ambulance and ran a competition within their group to design a Christmas card. Colin is a member of Marlborough Artists and has been a professional artist for over 30 years. He said: “It was an honour to produce the design and I feel very privileged that my design was chosen by Wiltshire Air Ambulance. I know the great work they do. The brief for the design was to have a well known Wiltshire landscape in snow, with a Christmas tree and the helicopter flying overhead. “It took me a little while to choose the best view point, I spent quite 42

NEPAL PART I

T

HIS time my friends we head East to the wonderful mountain Kingdom of Nepal. Something on my bucket list was to spend a special birthday with friends doing something different to our normal holidays ! As I approached my sixtieth birthday I suggested to friends why don’t we go trekking in Nepal !! No sooner said than we were all heading off on a flight to Kathmandu ! Nepal is situated between India and Tibet a mountainous country set high in the Himalayas . Our journey takes us to Kathmandu, North to Pokhara where we start out five day trek , rafting on the Seti river and finally to search for Tigers in the National Chitwan park. This has the making of a very grand adventure ! We did some training in the form of some hill walking but nothing could prepare us for the mountains that we grew to love ! Realising we were never going to climb Everest we set our sights on the foothills of the Annanpura range, that will do me nicely it can’t be that hard surely !! We started our adventure in Kathmandu, the capital of this ancient mountain kingdom. Kathmandu is a maze of narrow streets, wooden temples and beautiful palaces, where the sound of jingling prayer flags and rich aromas fill the air. We had two wonderful days looking at the sights of old Kathmandu. The Beautiful Dubar Square has very special memories as it has recently sustained damage in the earthquake. 48

by Carol Price, Pebbles Travel

Refreshed from a couple of good nights sleep we leave Kathmandu and fly north to Pokhara, where we see the first glimpse of the spectacular mountains of the Himalayas range. We are greeted at our hotel by our guides and Sherpas who will be with us over the next few days. I am sure they could put me in that basket if I get tired!! We rise early for the start of our adventure I decided we should all have the same colour tee shirts for the trek so we could spot one another as we start the almost single file track that winds itself up and up snaking around the mountains. The views were spectacular , we passed through tiny villages that looked as if they were perched on the edge of nowhere, full of laughing children who probably realised our previous training probably needed extra work!! We will not be defeated! each night we reward ourselves with a well earned soak of feet, a hearty meal and ... rude not to try the local rum! Our reward came eventually when we arrived at our final highest point at Ghandruk. We arrived tired late afternoon with the mist down , the view would have to wait until the morning ! The climb was tough but great fun and our guides were amazing everyone walked at

their own pace so the green shirts could be seen quite spread out towards the end of the trek! We woke early the next morning around 5am for our reward ... the view!! This was one of life’s wows! As we watched the sun come up over Annapurna and the whole range stood there in front of us it was breathtaking . The golden glow on the snow coloured peaks is something you will always remember. I was right this was becoming such a special trip ! We had a Nepalese breakfast sitting outside just looking at how far we had climbed and what we had achieved. I could have sat here for days but it was short lived as the next day we were to make our descent. I had not realised how many steps there were on our climb up and now they were even harder to come down. Words do not do it justice, it was the hardest thing I have ever done but the most wonderful rewarding one. The lodges are simple but with all home comforts and en-suite rooms ,local food is served with a smile and the guides were excellent, we certainly could not have made it without them. A birthday not to be forgotten.

Part II of Carol’s journey to Nepal next month.

Facial Reflexology A Focus on Sinus Problems

You have heard about reflexology on feet or hands but what about on the face? Wiltshire Reflexologist Gabriela Slater is now one of only a handful of practitioners in the county offering an innovative treatment– Facial Reflexology. Gabriela, aged 42, who lives in Chippenham, has trained with one of the UK’s leading authorities on this method – Ziggie Bergman at the London School of Reflexology. “When I first heard about Facial Reflexology, I was really intrigued about how the treatment would feel and what its benefits would be. In my practice I see many clients suffering from blocked sinuses, headaches and migraines. I found that by offering clients Facial Reflexology sessions the sinuses clear so much faster than after reflexology on the feet and they experience less headaches and migraines” - said Gabriela.

Facial Reflexology using the Bergman Method

Facial Reflexology (the Bergman Method) is based on the same theory as traditional hand and foot Reflexology however the treatment focuses is on the pressure points located on the face. The close proximity of the face to the brain and cranial nerves make Facial Reflexology very powerful in impacting the body.

Some of Gabriela’s clients experience the treatment and that’s what they had to say:

    

Facial Reflexology can help you to: Reduce stress levels Make your skin glowing and radiant Relieve sinus congestion Reduce tension headaches and migraines Improve concentration

Facial Reflexology is a non-invasive treatment based on the theory that areas of your face are connected to areas of your body.

Gabriela Slater Facial Reflexologist - Chippenham 07947 357 956 www.nureflexology.co.uk 52

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2016

The treatment is very gentle and deeply relaxing and helps to release muscle tension in the face, increasing circulation, thus leaving the face looking smoother and more toned with a natural healthy glow. The direct work on the sinus area and the head, works so much more effectively.

“I suffered from blocked sinuses on and off for a whole winter. I came to see Gabriela for my usual Foot Reflexology and she offered me a Facial Reflexology session instead, I could not believe it but after the treatment the pressure in my head was gone and my sinuses were clear, highly recommended” “I have just had my first facial reflexology session and it was amazing! My sinuses feel clear and I am sooooooo relaxed.” Facial Reflexology sessions are available in clinics in Chippenham and Marlborough by Gabriela Slater – www.nureflexology.co.uk If you need any further details contact Gabriela Slater on 07947 357 956 or email: info@nureflexology.co.uk

Driver Survivor by Tom Hancock

M

OST people spend many hours in their car each week, but none of us expects to have to live in it! But in the face of a major incident or in the event of a breakdown or bad weather, you could be forced to rely on your car for short term shelter and survival. With a properly equipped car emergency kit, you could survive in your vehicle for days if necessary. If you get into trouble and you are in your car, studies have shown that you are most likely to survive if you stay with your vehicle rather than venture out looking for help. But if you do decide to leave your vehicle only do so if it’s safe to do so, the weather clears and you have proper protective clothing. In addition, make sure the vehicle is parked well off the road and leave a note indicating what has happened, where you have gone, and your health situation.

Hedges G

ARDEN BOUNDARIES are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen for fruit and flowers - food.

Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care.

On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife. I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.

Anniversary appeal by woodland volunteers A dedicated group of Chippenham volunteers are looking for extra help as they prepare for the tenth anniversary of a local nature reserve. Mortimores Wood is a haven of tranquillity alongside the River Avon, a short distance from the Sustrans cycle route south of Pewsham. The ancient woodland has a recorded history extending back more than 800 years and once formed part of the Royal Forest of Pewsham when it was used for hunting. Today the 3.5 acres are owned by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity but maintained by a small team of hardworking local residents who meet once a month. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of it being designated as a Local Nature Reserve and so the Mortimores Wood Volunteers hope to recruit more people to improve the site before a celebratory event in 2017. Chairman Colin Truman has been with the group since soon after it was formed in 1994. He said: “For centuries the wood was subjected to coppice management where large trees were allowed to develop but smaller trees were cut back every few years to allow more sunlight to reach the ground, encouraging a wide

Colin Truman, chairman of the Mortimores Wood Volunteers, in the ancient woodland on the edge of Chippenham variety of flowers to flourish. However, in modern times this management wasn’t taking place so the flora of the woodland was in danger of being lost. “So we meet once a month to restore the system which resulted in this diversity, to maintain the predominant character of the wood, and to improve public access in some areas. “There is a now a regular cycle of cutting and growing which allows an abundance of amazing flowers to become established.” Surveys have identified 16 species of trees and almost 60 species of ground flora across the coppiced area, and volunteers have created wooden steps down the slope to the bank of the River Avon. New saplings are also planted. The woodland is now a popular spot for dog-walkers and anglers, and attracts a wide variety of wildlife. This includes deer, badgers, squirrels, voles and rabbits, as well as buzzards, kestrels, sparrowhawks, woodpeckers and bats. Colin added: “There is now a lot more flora and fauna than when we first started, and the whole area looks absolutely beautiful during the changing seasons especially the spread of bluebells in the Spring. “We all get a great deal of pleasure from planting new trees and watching them grow but we know that we could achieve so much more if we had some extra help. “We would love to welcome new volunteers of all ages. We’ve currently got a group which ranges in age from their teens to their 60s.

Keep Safe

e live in a dangerous world, but thankfully there are people out there who have come up with health and safety labelling to protect us like the label on a power tool, “this drill is not to be used for dental purposes” or the label on pushchair, “remove child before folding”. How about this? “This Vanishing fabric marker should not be used for signing legal documents”. There’s something about Remembrance Sunday that reminds us just how unsafe the world can be. It’s the one day, when we recall the sacrifice of so many men and women over the years, who played their part in keeping us safe. Our way of life was preserved through them. Evil regimes, terrorist organisations, fascist dictators have had to be confronted in order for us to live in safety. Health and Safety legislation of course has quite a reputation and can often be the butt of our jokes. We associate it with over bureaucracy and litigation culture, but the simple truth is: being safe is a good thing. It’s not to be taken lightly. When school go through Ofsted Inspections, the safeguarding of children is quite rightly a priority. There is a true story that has recently come to light in Uganda. A school in Kampala had some visitors and they noticed that the school bell was a little unusual. It wasn’t a bell at all, it was bomb that had been found lying around after the civil war in that country. Not only was it a bomb, but it was a live, unexploded bomb. Teachers would bang a stone against it to call the children in from their playtime. Needless to say the visitors stopped the ringing and the bomb was later diffused. Believe it or not, this was the second school to have found a bomb in a matter of weeks. The other was found in a toy cupboard! Not very safe. As we acknowledge the importance of safety. We very subtly have to humbly admit something to ourselves and those around us: we are vulnerable. We all need to be kept safe in this dangerous world. This is one of the layers of meaning in our Remembrance Sunday commemorations. Protecting

ourselves involves calling on the few to take up arms and place their lives on the line. Dangers today are varied. There continue to be unstable foreign powers willing to be aggressors. There are people, both at home and abroad, who are driven by extremism to impose their ideologies on others through violence. The call for courage in history to confront evil, continues to be heard now. The Bible promises that a day will come, when there will be no more war, hatred or violence. The prophet Isaiah looked to the future and saw a day when, “God will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” (Isaiah 2) In the book of Revelation, which speaks of what will happen at the very end of time here on earth, “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21) God will have the last word. Jesus will bring justice and peace. There is a scene in the Chronicles of Narnia, where Lucy asks Mr Beaver about Aslan, the Lion that represents Jesus in the story. Lucy says, “Is He Safe?” The response comes. “Oh no he’s not safe, but He is good.” Holding on to a faith in God, means admitting our own vulnerability and trusting in God’s goodness. It is God who is our refuge and our strength. He is the ever present help in time of trouble. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Silent Night PART I

I

T was a gloomy morning in early December. Grey mist shrouded the streets as though the clouds had fallen down on the town, and there was a decidedly icy chill in the damp air. Busses loomed suddenly out of the murk, their fogged up windows showing the pale yellow lights inside, and as they crawled slowly forward, the thin beams from their headlamps barely showed on the road ahead. The schools were getting ready for their Nativity play and the children were excitedly chattering and giggling with anticipation as they talked about their costumes. Weeks ago, the desks and floors had been covered in glitter, cotton wool, and glue as busy little fingers got to work on their Christmas cards, but now all thoughts were on their forthcoming acting debuts. There had been great rivalry amongst the children for the best parts, and many a tussle had broken out amongst the ones who thought they should play the main characters, but the parts had now been allotted so, for the moment at least, there were no more arguments. Mothers had taken these last few peaceful days to finish their shopping, and everywhere you looked, bulging shopping baskets hinted at the goodies safely in their depths. The scene in town was one of hectic last minute buying, while cards were popped into post boxes, reams of tinsel and rolls of brightly coloured wrapping paper disappeared off the shelves as fast as the shop assistants could replace them with more. Great fat turkeys hung in the butchers windows, trays of delicious fancy cakes filled the bakery’s shelves, and crackers and fairy lights were strung everywhere. 66

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2016

Slowly, as the weak sunlight penetrated the clouds, the mist began to drift away as though a veil was being pulled aside by unseen hands, and to the relief of the busy passengers still to embark at the shops, the busses were able to pick up speed. By the time the children came home from school, the presents had safely been hidden away, and After tea came the serious business of finishing off the Nativity costumes. Sewing machines whirred, impatient children wanted to know how much longer they had to stand still on a chair while the hems of dresses and robes were pinned to the correct length. After an hour of fidgeting and grumbling, they were done, and went off to play. The great play was only two days away, and then the schools would be breaking up for the festive holiday. The children looked splendid in their costumes, but a couple of naughty boys were still annoyed at playing the inn keeper and a sheep. They had the audience howling with laughter when the sheep decided to “ moo “ instead of keeping quiet, and this set the inn

keeper off. When it was his turn to tell the holy couple there was no room at the inn, the conversation went something like this :- “Have you a room for my wife and I ? We have travelled from afar and are so weary.” The inn keeper gave a toothless grin. “ Yea, course I have, but it’ll cost you five quid and breakfast is extra!”

As the audience giggled, “Mary “ who had the baby doll tucked under her cloak, glared at the boy, yanked the doll from under her cloak, and fetched the lad a whack on the head with it, at which the doll’s head fell off and had to be retrieved from the front row of the audience. “That’s for spoiling my play!” she yelled at him, while the audience mopped the tears of laughter From their faces. Far from ruining the play, the crowd loved it and it was voted a huge success, much to their red faced and sweating teacher. The following morning, the town awoke to a light powdering of snow so naturally, the children wanted to be out under the feathery flakes, enjoying the first day of their holiday. As a special treat some of them were treated to a bus ride into town to look at the shops, see the magnificent tree in the centre of town, and even have tea and a cake in a café. But it was the toy shops that they wanted to see the most, with their windows artfully sprayed with “ snow “ from a can, and lights twinkling amongst the wonderful “treasures” laid out on a sheet of snowy white cotton wool. Noses pressed up against the glass, they couldn’t get enough. A small red train ran around the little green fir trees sprinkled with the glittery canned snow, and a dolls house with its front open showed a family of tiny “people” sitting around a Christmas tree covered in tiny wrapped boxes and tinsel. A box of soldiers stood to attention beside a desert fort. A beautiful “walking” doll with golden hair sat beside a smiling teddy bear. There were fire engines, racing cars, and building blocks tumbled amongst cuddly toys and pretty jewellery, and at the back of the whole display stood a shiny red bicycle and a blue scooter.

Fortune’s Rocks

A Good Read

by Anita Shreve

by Noel Streatfield

..............................................................................................

...............................................................................................

It is the summer of the final year of the nineteenth century in the New Hampshire town of Fortune’s Rocks on the east coast of America. Women are expected to behave in a certain way and young Olympia Biddeford is no different. An impressionable 15 year old she is about to discover what it means to grow up. She meets John Haskall, a physician and friend of her father. Despite the fact that he is married and 26 years her senior, Olympia falls madly in love with him.

“I wonder, if other girls had to be one of us, which of us they’d choose to be?”

Finding herself pregnant Olympia must carve out a new place in society as she finds herself ostracised by those around her. Late Victorian society does not take kindly to her behaviour and there are elements of a feminist struggle as she forges a new life.

ID GI EA FT L

The prose is eloquent and the descriptions of Olympia’s life and environment are spell binding. Shreve went on to write two more novels set in this town, ‘Sea Glass’ and ‘The Pilot’s Wife’: each dealing with unique struggles of women over the course of the twentieth century. But it is here, with Olympia, that the story of the converted convent in Fortune’s Rocks really begins...

The three Fossil sisters are growing up in London. They aren’t really sisters, but adopted by ‘Gum’, a paleontolgist. Each one is a treasure he brought home from his travels. And each is very different. When Gum disappears on one of his expeditions money gets tight and the family take in lodgers. One of them, a dancer, spots a talent for dance in Posy, the youngest, and before they know it, all three girls are enrolled in The Children’s Academy of Dance and Stage Training. What ensues is a glimpse into life on the stage in 1930s London. Since it was first published in 1936 generations of children have indeed considered which of the girls they would like to be. Is it Pauline, who discovers a talent for acting? Or Petrova who would much rather be fixing car engines than performing on stage. Or Posy, the budding ballerina? This children’s classic, though a bit dated in its language and style, never fails to entrance readers and no doubt will continue to do so for years to come.
