HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Editor’s Letter

d

56

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas break, and didn’t over indulge too much! At this time many of us make resolutions to change our lives, so In this New Year issue we look at many ways you can keep fit and healthy, and there are recipes and gardening tips for the new year too. Talking of the garden, don’t forget the birds - why not take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch - see the article on page 56. We are always interested in receiving items of local interest from our readers for inclusion in the magazine - for example in this issue we received articles from Wiltshire Wanderers, Wilts and Berks Canal Trust and Calne Badminton Club. Why not follow their example and write something for the Town Crier in 2016! Until next time ...

Two Hours Free Car Parking in Calne From Monday 7th December, shoppers will be able to enjoy free car parking for two hours in Calne’s Heritage Quarter Car Park. This success follows a campaign led by local businesses and Town Councillors, with the Town Council’s Town Development and Planning Committee agreeing to subsidise a six month trial with £3,600 paid to Wiltshire Council from Calne Town Council’s general reserves. Starting at the height of the Christmas shopping rush, the trial is hoped to increase footfall to the independent businesses and historic streets within the Heritage Quarter, as Calne Town Councillor Robert MacNaughton explains “It is important we support local businesses, because they are the life blood of the Town. We need to encourage more visitors to stay and enjoy what Calne has to offer.” Accessed from the A4 and known to locals as Church Street car park, the site has recently been renamed to draw attention to the historic buildings that surround it. Calne Heritage Quarter is an area of the town centre which has been highlighted by a local tourism group, Calne Our Place, for its historic character and charm. Within the Heritage Quarter visitors can find a range of independent businesses, Calne Heritage Centre and Castlefields Canal and River Park. For more information about Calne Heritage Quarter, visit www.calne.gov.uk.

Cherhill author finds inspiration teaching new writers Local writer, Alison Knight from Cherhill, is using her years of experience as a student of creative writing to teach new writers in evening classes at Wiltshire College. She will be teaching a ten week course of evening classes on Tuesdays in Chippenham from January. ‘It’s called Starting to Write,’ said Alison. ‘A perfect opportunity to get started on that writing project you’ve been thinking about, or to explore different types of writing.’ Alison’s first two books – Off the Record and Rescue Me – are contemporary women’s fiction published under the pen name of Alison Rose. Her third book, Rosie Goes to War, is a young adult time-slip adventure written as Alison Knight, is being released in April 2016. ‘It’s the first in a series of stories about Rosie,’ explains Alison. ‘I’m very excited about going to my book launch at the London Book Fair, and undertaking a tour of schools to talk about writing the story.’ Alison is still a keen student. ‘I’ve found that teaching creative writing to new writers is really inspiring. Everyone has a tale to tell, and each of us sees the world slightly differently from other people.’ The course, which is suitable for anyone with an interest in creative writing starts on Tuesday, 12th January in Chippenham, from 7-9pm. LUNCHTIME RECITAL: ANDREW MCCORMACK WED, 20 JAN 2016 Andrew McCormack is a composer and pianist at the pinnacle of his creative powers. He has been the driving force behind A-list jazz artists and has performed extensively around the world.

Teenage Footballers supported by one of Wiltshire’s leading SMEs Chippenham’s teenage footballers are feeling the warm glow of pride after securing a sponsorship deal with local company John Williams Heating Services.

The firm has covered the cost of a new kit for the U14s Cobras, who play in the Mid Wilts league, and the Vipers, who are in the North Wilts league. Almost 30 young players are involved and they train on Thursday evenings at Stanley Park.

Head coach Rob Humphreys said; “The boys were so excited the night we gave the new kit out to them because it makes them feel more professional, more inspired and more like a team. “It is great that a local business has felt able to invest in a local team. It gives us all a lift, including the parents who are really supportive.”

John Williams, who runs the company on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate with his wife Debbie, said they were delighted to help. “Chippenham has given us a good, solid business so it is really important to put something back into the community,” he said.

10

It is not the first time the company, set up by John and Debbie 11 years ago, has stepped in to help good causes. John Williams Heating Services has sponsored the Chippenham Half Marathon and the Wiltshire Emergency Services Show, and raised money for The Stroke Association and Dorothy House Hospice Care.

On the sporting front, it regularly sponsors activities at Chippenham Rugby Club, recently providing the kit for the U13s team and individually supporting up and coming player Dan Keat.

The Williams’ connection to the Chippenham U14s began with one of their heating engineers, Wayne Doman, who is a coach for the team, which includes his 13-year-old son Brandon. Fatherof-two Mr Doman, who lives in Pewsham with his wife Olivia, said: “The kit means everything to the boys. It looks nice, feels nice and does them good. We are so very grateful.”

Wilts & Berks Canal Trust celebrates commendation in National Awards LOCAL restoration charity, The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, is celebrating after receiving a commendation award in the Canal & River Trust’s Annual Living Waterways Awards ceremony in London. Representatives of the Trust travelled to the impressive venue Church House Conference Centre Westminster, their rail travel very generously sponsored by Great Western Railways. The Trust was entered in the Education & Learning category for the Melksham, Calne & Chippenham Branch’s project based around Pewsham Locks, including two Heritage Open Days, when volunteers and supporters of the Trust swapped their hard hats and overalls for cloth caps and period costumes. They brought the heritage site to life for local schoolchildren and residents, by leading practical activities and telling stories of the people who lived and worked there when it was a thriving industrial hub. The certificate of commendation was accepted by newly appointed Chairman Roderick Bluh who thanked everyone who had been involved in the project. He said: “We were delighted to be part of such a prestigious occasion which included projects such as the amazing 30 metre high Kelpies near Grangemouth. The Trust is very aware that it would be impossible to organise events without the help and involvement of many volunteers, individuals and community groups. “We are also very grateful to Great Western Railways for their assistance, and the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting our project through the Sharing Heritage scheme. 18

“We hope that this recognition by the Canal & River Trust will convince even more people to join us in our dream of restoring the Wilts & Berks Canal.”

music from the Butty Boys, canal food to taste, and Frankie the canal horse made the day for many as he paced up and down the towpath in his harness and bonnet.

The ceremony was also attended by Trust Directors Kath Hatton, Chris Coyle, and newly appointed CEO Jonathan Till, and some of the team from the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne Branch who had organised the project. Dave Maloney, chair of the local Melksham, Chippenham & Calne Branch, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this national recognition. The project was really ambitious and we were thrilled that it was so successful.

“This was our first major heritage event, but we will continue informing and involving the local community in our plans to restore Pewsham Locks and the adjoining canal. We are a very friendly bunch and would love local people to come along and see what we are doing to provide a beautiful community amenity. Many people already enjoy the walk along the towpath to Lacock, and for those who haven’t yet visited, you will be delighted to discover this lovely stretch of unspoilt countryside so close to our town.

“I will never forget the Open Days, especially the sight of over a hundred Chippenham school children in Victorian costume enjoying hammering, sawing, clay puddling, painting, and learning the stories of the canal people. Our volunteers were brilliant, dressing up as characters, telling their stories and leading fourteen different activities over two days; there were canal arts and crafts to see and try, folk

“Since the Heritage Open Days in 2014, volunteers have completely rebuilt the collapsed Cocklemore Brook Culvert, and made a start on restoring Top Lock as well as completing many smaller projects along the local stretch.” For more information or to get involved visit the websites: www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk www. wbct.org.uk

What’s On

Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small Differences Victoria Art Gallery, Bath 9 January - 10 April 2016

Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery will display Grayson Perry’s The Vanity of Small Differences, a series of six large, exuberant tapestries that explore the British fascination with taste and class, in the new year.

The tapestries, measuring 2m x 4m each, were created for the BAFTA award-winning Channel 4 Series All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry, which first aired in June 2012. The series follows Perry as he embarks ‘on a safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain’ to gain inspiration for his work. Inspired by William Hogarth’s A Rakes Progress, the tapestries chart the ‘class journey’ made by young Tim Rakewell, and feature many of the characters, incidents and objects that Perry encountered on journeys through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and The Cotswolds for the TV series.

The Bath & North East Somerset Council-run Victoria Art Gallery will host the first regional exhibition of the tapestries in the south of England – previously they have been displayed in London, the north of England and overseas. The works were gifted to the Arts Council Collection and the British Council by the artist and Victoria Miro Gallery, London, supported by Channel 4 Television, the Art Fund, Sfumato Foundation, and AlixPartners.

Grayson Perry said: “I am hugely pleased and proud that The Vanity of Small Differences will be shared by the Arts Council and British Council Collections because this means the work will be able to travel all around the country and the world. Thanks also to the Art Fund, Sfumato Foundation and Channel 4; their support means the tapestries now have a chance to reach a very wide and varied audience. Of all the pieces I have

made this was the one I conceived from the outset as a public artwork. I hope that wherever it goes it not only delights the eye but also sparks debate about class, taste and British society.”

Cllr Patrick Anketell-Jones, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “We are delighted that the Victoria Art Gallery will be the first southern venue outside London to host The Vanity of Small Differences. The exhibition will give local residents and visitors a chance to enjoy these important and exciting works by one of the UK’s best-known artists.”

This is the third occasion the Victoria Art Gallery has displayed works created and selected by the former Turner Prize-winner. In 2009-10 the Gallery hosted the Perry-curated Unpopular Culture exhibition, then just last year it acquired his ‘Map of Days’, a selfportrait in the form of a walled city, for its permanent collection.

Tickets are £4 for adults, £3.50 for seniors and full-time students, and free for children and Discovery Card holders.

A fully illustrated hardback catalogue will be available at the Victoria Art Gallery shop, featuring colour reproductions of the tapestries along with photos of the artist’s sketches and preparatory materials. Special exhibition price £14.99 (RRP £17.99). A pack of six notecards based on the tapestries will also be available from the gallery shop (£7.50).

To accompany the exhibition tour, the Arts Council has launched an app for iPad and iPhone with commentary from the artist, art historical references, a guide to the works and a detailed zoom facility. Buy from the App Store (£2.29). Detail from Expulsion From Number 8 Eden Close 2012. Copyright Grayson Perry. Photography: Stephen White.

Get fit through Calne Badminton Club

Want to lose weight and get an all body work out? BADMINTON can be a great, inexpensive, accessible and sociable way to getting your body fit and healthy through regular exercise, in an easy to master racket sport regardless of age or ability. Calne Badminton Club, (Calne BC), is an amateur badminton club based in the heart of Calne. With over 50 members, and with a dedicated team of friendly, qualified, welcoming and experienced coaches and volunteers, the club exists to promote badminton as a healthy sporting interest throughout the local community, and make playing, learning, training and competition fun for all its members. The club is inclusive, friendly and welcoming to all that show an interest in the sport of badminton. Calne BC offers a diverse range of playing sessions for all players both male and female, including beginners, coaching, competitive play, junior, family sessions, and social leisure play for all players of all ages and abilities. The Club currently plays in two sessions of two hours each, every week, all year, and uses all five courts of the Calne Leisure Centre. In addition to the well illuminated sports hall, the centre offers an onsite cafe, gym, swimming pool, showers, toilets and is disabled accessible throughout. A brand new junior/family badminton 3 hour session is being launched in September 2016 on

Saturday afternoons. The club provides everything a new player may need to start playing badminton. It has a large stock of rackets that can be borrowed for free, on site first aid with trained first aiders, and supplies both plastic and feather shuttlecocks for games. It even supplies spare racket grips, and offers members discounts on racket restringing and physiotherapy. The new Calne Badminton Club is offering an exciting range of incentives and benefits to new players. The club prides itself on offering inexpensive membership. During January 2016, all new players benefit from four (4) completely free taster sessions, and on becoming a member pay an annual club membership fee, which includes membership of Badminton England, (the National Governing Body of the sport), and a court fee each time they play. After January, the club offers a visitors pass enabling new players to sample the club over three (3) free sessions. The club’s membership is open to everyone, whatever age or playing ability, all year round. Pure beginners with no experience of the game are encouraged to join, as well as more experienced players. Members also benefit from a free Calne BC branded welcome pack containing a free water bottle and hand towel, ideal to use between games, as well as a guide

book to badminton, covering its shots and tactical play. Membership discounts are available for families and adult couples, corporate members, as well as players who play in other Badminton England affiliated clubs. The club also offers a concessionary membership for those players on low incomes, (benefits), full time students, registered disabled including those with an autistic spectrum disorder, retired senior citizens, those employed by the armed forces and emergency services, qualified badminton coaches and volunteers. We welcome any new members of any standard so come and join us at either of our sessions. You have nothing to lose! There is no waiting list, or need to book, and the club has ample capacity to accommodate many new members. We play at the Calne Leisure Centre, White Horse Way, Calne, 8:15 pm to 10:10 pm every Tuesday and 8:15 pm to 10:10 pm every Thursday. The new Junior session will commence on Saturday 3rd September 2016 from 3:15 pm to 6:10 pm. All Calne sessions have use of five courts. Calne BC’s members also can play at the club’s sister club, Chippenham BC, at its session 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm every Monday evening all year round including bank holidays at the Chippenham Sports Club Air Dome, Hardenhuish Park, Bristol Road, Chippenham, SN15 1NG, which offers four courts. Calne BC’s benefits also apply to Chippenham BC’s new players. For additional details, please visit: www.calnebc.com or phone David on 01249 464 325 / 07796 987 134 or email the club at playbadminton@calnebc.com

What is the sport of Badminton? Badminton is played on a court by either two players (singles) or four players (doubles). The players use rackets to hit a shuttlecock over the net from one side to the other, the object being to score points by hitting the shuttle over the net to a spot on the other player’s side where either they can’t reach it or it forces them to hit the shuttle out of the court or into the net. Regardless of who served, a player who achieves this is awarded a point, and the first player or pair to reach the required number of points in a game wins. The sport is officially the fastest of all racket sports. Players can hit the shuttlecock at speeds of up to 180 mph towards their opponent. But it is not just all about speed. A player can expect to run up to four miles, (6.4 km) around the court during a match, whilst having the flexibility to maintain energy bursting rallies. So whilst stamina and agility on court are important, the good news is that badminton is open to anyone; all can get involved and this is reflected in high participation rates amongst clubs and sports centres around the country. Badminton is hugely beneficial to improving your health and fitness and can lead to both stronger muscles and a better cardiovascular system, through either leisurely social play or more energetic competitive play. Either way, the entire body is used due to the large range of movement the sport demands, including leaps, lunges, twists, turns, stretches, running and hitting the shuttlecock. Step out onto any badminton court, and you can expect to burn 600 to 1000 calories per hour as well as testing your stamina, flexibility and coordination.

Regardless of the playing ability of the player, players experience improved balance and hand-eye co-ordination, improved aerobic fitness, burning off calories with energy being supplied to the muscles and burns your body fat. The sport also boosts flexibility and running speed, due to the fast paced nature of the sport, and develops the strength and power of muscles, notably the leg and arm muscles. Enjoy this game with friends and family and you will start to lose weight within a couple of weeks. The sport allows players to develop skills that are transferable to other sports and other areas of your life. Such as simple maths, communication skills, team work skills and team tactics, as well as improving your speed, reflex, intelligence and productivity. Badminton can be a fast paced game. Since players need to be attentive, the game increases your speed and improves your reflexes. Intelligence is also a factor since players must know how to deceive their opponents in every shot so they can win the game. Thus if you play badminton, it will help you develop your agility, strength and intelligence. As with all forms of physical exercise, badminton can reduce or eliminate your risk for many health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. It can also reduce your risk for coronary heart disease by reducing your triglyceride levels and increasing your “good” cholesterol. Because playing badminton promotes physical fitness, it helps to your mental wellbeing by reducing stress and anxiety, increases self-esteem, confidence, and keeps you feeling well, strong, motivated, enthusiastic and young. It is also improves your mood through increasing endorphins. Therefore badminton is also likely to put you in a good mood because it’s a social activity.

The game of badminton has excellent social benefits. It can alleviate the effects of depression and social isolation. Between games players chat, socialise, and make new friends and arrange social events in the local community. You will become part of a thriving community and you can join a league if you really enjoy the game. With lightweight badminton rackets, the sport is an ideal sport for younger children, and their families to participate together, and being an indoor sport, inclement weather is never a problem. Badminton is the second most popular participation sport in the UK, and some 4 million players, or 8% of the population play badminton on a regular basis. The appeal of playing badminton, first and foremost, is that the basics of the sport are easy to master; even new players or those with little or no skill can enjoy their first game by quickly learning the skills required to hit the shuttlecock over the net and play with a playing partner, and then advance their skills quickly after that. The sport requires minimal equipment, that you may already own, and many clubs provide free hire of rackets and shuttles. New players do not need to invest in any badminton specific clothing. All that is required are shorts and a t-shirt, and non black soled (non marking) sports shoes.

I became a Consultant in October 1987 (28 years ago) and over that time I have watched Cambridge Weight Plan evolve and grow. This has given me a huge wealth of experience and insight into how our products and plans work and can be used to help a vast range of clients. Also over this period of time I have learnt first hand the problems and difficulties in maintaining your weight long term, something which I am proud of myself for doing. In 2011 I was awarded a Highly Commended Consultant Award and in 2012 I received my 25 years Long Service Award. I live in West Swindon and work mainly from home but I try to be as flexible as possible when dealing with enquiries from new clients and have helped people in surrounding districts as far as Brinkworth, Malmesbury and Tetbury as well as in Swindon and its surrounding villages. Having lost and maintained my 4 stone loss with Cambridge weight plan I became a Consultant to help others really understand the problems surrounding dieting. I pass on how it's our emotions that can affect our day to day lives. We tend to put our head in the sand and ignore whats going on, that is the worst thing we can do. Working together with my clients I help them understand this and it's a fantastic experience when they have their lightbulb moment and everything falls into place for them. They gain so much confidence and belief in themselves nothing gets in their way to reach their target. They look incredible and the confidence really shines through. With my help my clients lives change in such a positive way and they learn to make each day count-so lets be happy and have fun! I work from my home near Devizes but I also cover all of the local towns and villages. By visiting clients in their own homes, I am able to offer flexible day and evening appointments. Calne and surrounding areas Weight Loss: 6.5 stone in 6 months (size 24 to 12) and maintained for two years*

Calne and surrounding areas Weight Lost: 5 stone in six months (size 18 to a 10)*

I have struggled with my weight since my late 20's but I always made excuses for myself. I enjoy my food but in more recent years this has had a detrimental effect on my health.

I’d had a weight problem since 1991 when my son was born, my largest being size 20/22. I’d tried every diet going but just couldn’t get anywhere. Finally in 2009 I managed to really focus and by calorie counting I lost 6 stone and got down to a size 8. I kept it off for a year, but in the three months of August to October 2011 I had an operation, my marriage broke down, my son went to America for a year to study and I was made redundant!

My husband and I were invited to a social event (for the life of me I can't even remember what it was) and like most women this meant a new outfit. When arriving at my normal clothes shop of choice I could not find anything that fitted. I was upset and left the shop in tears. While travelling home that day I decided that enough was enough-I had to do something! The following week I started Cambridge with my husband. I was determined to achieve and stuck to my guns despite people saying“ that “if you lose it fast you will put it back on” along with “You won’t stick to it”. I worked through the Cambridge Steps Program and increased my exercise. My Cambridge journey was just the start of my change in lifestyle. I still continue to go to the gym and really could not imagine life without exercise. I am a full time Cambridge consultant and love helping people achieve their goals. It is an amazing feeling seeing people change their lives and become the people they want to be. I am looking forward to the future and will be working closely with Debbie in Calne and the surrounding areas, offering people greater flexibility with appointments and support. Contact Details: 07515 554821 Email: tracey4cambridge@gmail.com

While on a skiing holiday I snapped the Cruciate ligament in my left knee, tearing both my medial collateral ligaments. This led me to be housebound with both legs in braces on non weight bearing crutches for 4 months. This meant that I ate a lot of Pizzas, Curries and Chinese takeaways resulting in me putting on a lot of weight. I started noticing that my knees were hurting and was finding it hard to walk upstairs. Also, I had recently woken up at night suffering from palpitations so I wasn’t surprised when I was told by the Doctor that I was starting to get high blood pressure. I started calorie counting again but just couldn’t get focussed. I realised that I needed support. I met a friend at work and we got to talking about our weight. My friend explained while he was at University he had lost a lot of weight by doing the Cambridge diet so we decided to do the plan together. Having a plan to follow and so many products to choose from seemed to be the perfect way to get me back in control of my eating. I had previously felt out of control, eating way too much and snacking not only on sweet but savoury. Anything edible really! Cambridge Weight Plan has changed my life, not only did I look good, I felt good. I decided to become a consultant to support and help others to get the same great feeling! I am looking forward to working closely with Tracey in Calne and surrounding areas, offering people greater flexibility with appointments and support.

New Year, New Start

Wiltshire Wanderers

The new year is always a time of reflection and trying out new ideas and resolutions to keep fit.

A

N EXCELLENT WAY to get fit, make friends and to explore and see the wonderful county of Wiltshire is by walking on foot. Within Wiltshire there are five Rambler groups split down geographical lines and one additional group which covers the entire county for younger walkers. There’s no better way to enjoy the company of like-minded people than on a Ramblers walk. Walks are sociable, fun, healthy and are great way to explore near you and further afield. Wiltshire Wanderers are a friendly, welcoming walking group that covers Wiltshire and the immediate surrounding counties, for people roughly between the ages of 20 and 50, although any age is welcome. We cater for all lengths of walks, from the small 4 milers to 26 miles or more. Wiltshire Wanderers are affiliated to the Ramblers. We would insist you become a Ramblers member there’s valuable discounts available so the membership pays for itself, and you gain insurance cover. We generally allow new walkers to come out a maximum of 3 times before they must become Ramblers

members. For those walkers on tight budgets, the Ramblers does offer membership for those on benefits/low incomes. Our walks are generally on a Sunday morning starting from 10 or 10:30 am. We are not a group for children or disabled (in wheelchair) walkers, though walkers with dogs are welcome, provided they are well behaved and on leads. We generally go to the pub for a drink and sometimes an optional meal after the walk, so if you want to join us, you may want to bring some money We offer a short new walkers walk every two months, as a gentle introduction to the group, for those new to the Ramblers, as well as longer walks and pub walks where we stop at a pub for lunch. The group advertises its walks on the Wiltshire Ramblers website as well as using social media such as Facebook and Meetup websites. Please remember to wear good walking clothing such as walking trousers, wet weather clothing is also advisable (water proofs top

Walk Leader Courses Like any voluntary organisation, Wiltshire Wanderers requires people to freely volunteer their time to plan, pre walk and lead walks of any length for walks throughout Wiltshire and in neighbouring counties. We urgently require new walk leaders to spread the load as we have only have two regular walk leaders covering the whole county. 30

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2016

If you want more walks, then why not volunteer to put some on for us. Wiltshire Wanderers provides at regular times of the year, New Walk Leaders Workshops, covering all the basics enabling YOU to lead walks with the group in a confident and safe manner, increasing your walking enjoyment as well as giving something back to the walking community. It also looks good on your CV.

and bottom, gaiters etc), good stout walking boots with ankle support with or without walking socks, and please also remember to bring plenty of water with you on our walks. Sometimes it’s advisable to bring an extra pair of shoes and socks to change into after our walks if the walking boots are muddy, for you to enter pubs or your car home. What is Chi Kung? Classes at The Town Hall in Calne, Monday 12-1pm and The Cause in Chippenham, Thursday 10-11am Chi Kung (sometimes written “Qi Gong” or “Qigong”) is an invaluable component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over 60 million people in China practice Chi Kung every day, making it the most popular health exercise in that country. The important features and aims of Chi Kung are relaxation, quietness, naturalness, unity of breath and mind, gradual development and practicing to the individual’s state of health. Am I too old/young to learn Chi Kung? There is no age limit with Chi Kung - both young and old can practice and gain health benefits from it. The beginning set of Chi Kung taught by the Institute (Taiji Chi Kung Shibashi) can even be performed while seated! The UKCKS does provide specially tailored classes to meet the needs of children in primary schools and older persons. As classes are conducted for the purpose of relaxation, it is not appropriate to have anyone in a public class who may cause distractions (such as young, noisy children). What equipment do I need to practice Chi Kung? As no sports equipment, uniform or special grounds are required Chi Kung can be done at any time and in any place. All you need is a small amount of open space, some loose, comfortable clothing and some comfortable shoes. Where does Chi Kung come from? The term “Chi Kung” is an accepted English equivalent of the Chinese word “Qigong”, where “Qi” (“Chi” or “Ki”) means “breath” (as a conceptual term, this refers to the energy in the human body) and “gong” (“Kung”) means “achievement” or “skill” Where should I begin when learning Chi Kung? Beginning students joining UKCKS are taught the Taiji Chi Kung Shibashi in 18 Forms, a set designed to improve general health and well-being. We’ve found that this is a good place to start, because the set is simple to learn and provides health and relaxation benefits, usually from the very first lesson.

Tai Chi Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intenon.



Why is Chi Kung used for relaxation and stress management? The “Three Essentials of Chi Kung” are posture, mind and breathing. Because of the emphasis on these essentials, relaxation benefits are most often felt in the very first lesson. Where gentle movement, attention to posture and the deepening of the breath leads, a calm mind follows.

We believe that this set provides a good foundation for our students, which they can build upon in our more advanced classes. Is Chi Kung easy? Yes! The Chi Kung movements are not physically hard on the body or strenuous, and while there are a few movements that the beginning student may find challenging at first, on the whole Chi Kung is easy to learn and requires less from the student in independent practice time. This is reflected in our classes, where the emphasis is on relaxation and learning through practising the movements in sequence. Most of the lesson consisting of following the Instructor through the movements.

High fibre lentils promote heart health, lower cholesterol, provide vegetable protein, stabilise blood sugar, and are rich in iron and B vitamins. We love combining these earthy gems with the deep, roasty, slightly sweet flavour of caramelised onion. This soup will gently warm your stomach and keep you satisfied. It’s an American recipe so uses cup measurements. An American measuring cup is one which holds 240ml liquid, so any cup in your cupboard which is about that volume will do!

Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup Warming, nutritious and surprisingly filling, this soup is the perfect meal to come home to after a brisk winter’s walk Serves: 4-6 Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 shallots, diced 4 cloves of garlic, chopped 3 carrots, diced ½ teaspoon turmeric powder ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 beetroot (yellow ideally), peeled and diced 6 cups vegetable broth/stock 1¼ cups of red lentils 1 teaspoon of sea salt, plus more to taste ¼ teaspoon of pepper, plus more to taste 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced 10 cardamom pods or 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom ½ teaspoon coriander powder

Detoxes can be a great way to get back on track, but most aren’t exactly pleasurable. Who wants to sip cold juices, or nibble on some lettuce when it’s so bloomin’ cold out? The Soup Cleanse is a great alternative. Choose from a range of detox programmes, starting at a oneday mini-cleanse, and lots of very tempting recipes, from Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup to Pumpkin Miso Soup.

Method Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When it dances, add the shallots, garlic, carrots, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook until the shallots soften and the mixture becomes aromatic, about 3-5 minutes. Add the beetroot and vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the lentils and reduce the heat to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper and continue cooking at a simmer for 15-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the vegetables are tender. Prepare the caramelised onions while the soup cooks. If using cardamom pods, crush them (the bottom of a pan works nicely) and remove the seeds. Grind the seeds into a powder with a mortar and pestle. Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and heat until the oil dances. Add the onion, cardamom and coriander. Keep the heat high so the onions begin to brown, stirring continuously. If the onions start sticking to the sides of the pan, add a little water. Continue cooking for 10 minutes, or until the onions are caramelised and golden brown. Reduce the heat if necessary to keep them from burning. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Fill bowls with soup and top with a tablespoon of onions and serve, or simply stir the onions into the soup.

It’s that time of year when many of us feel a bit bloated and start to wish we maybe hadn’t eaten quite so many mince pies. The effects of a few too many glasses of wine and selection boxes, are all too apparent in our hair, skin and energy levels.

Soups are a great way to get a real hit of veggies, providing lots of vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein, with no added ‘junk’. They’re usually low-calorie, so can help with weight loss, as well as helping you to detox and boost your energy. While the book focuses on soups, it does include other healthy meals, snacks and drinks. Baked Wild Salmon with Avocado, Ginger and Mango Salsa anyone? Unlike many health books, The Soup Cleanse is easy to read, and enjoyable. There’s no lecturing, or nagging, just great advice and 50 recipes to choose from. Kate Duggan

DID YOU KNOW? To get the best health benefits, your 5-A-DAY portions should include a combination of a variety of fruit and vegetables. Your FIVE portions should be made up from THREE portions of vegetables and TWO fruit.

The Usbourne Healthy Cookbook by Fiona Patchett

............................................................................................. Trying to get children to eat healthily can be stressful, to say the least. It can feel that the healthier a meal is, and the longer it takes to prepare it, the less chance there is that the kids will eat it. One way to tempt them is to get them involved with the cooking. Kids are far likelier to eat something if they’ve had a hand in making it. There are a few healthy kids’ cookbooks on the market, but one of the best has to be The Usbourne Healthy Cookbook. Recipes are easy to follow, with clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of photos and illustrations. They’re not too complicated either; some can be completed by a child on their own, while others require a bit of help from adults. There are plenty of main dishes, along with desserts and drinks. Some recipes tempt kids with food they’ve likely tried, such as fruit salad or chicken fajitas, while others may encourage them to be a bit more adventurous. Children are taught about nutrition, portion size and the importance of a varied diet as they learn to cook. A bonus is that the book is spiral-bound, so lies flat, making it much easier to keep in place when they’re cooking. With any luck, it’ll inspire them so much that they’ll be cooking for you regularly, while you relax in front of the TV with a glass of wine. (We can but hope, can’t we?)

New Year - New Beginnings? by Una Cavanagh MBACP

F

OR many people the beginning of a New Year brings feelings of hope and renewal. After the excesses of the Christmas holidays and New Years Eve (go on - hands up then, who has sworn off drink for a month?), we tend to pay attention to how we are physically feeling. Gyms and health clubs report big rises in memberships in January as we resolve to get more active and fitter. What about our other resolutions? How are you are feeling about other aspects of your life, not just the physical? Do you resolve to make changes in 2016 and tell yourself that this year will be different? You’re not alone – many of us see the ending of the year and the beginning of the new one as the opportunity to reflect on what we would like our lives to actually look like. In 2011, “Relate”, the relationship counselling service, reported a 20% surge in January to their phone lines with people seeking help. Maybe the combination of family stresses over the holiday as well as that resolve to make things better? It’s not just about relationships though - people seek counselling for many reasons, a few examples include anxiety, depression, bereavement and redundancy. There may be something specific people want help and support for but often it’s hard to pin-point what it is that causes feelings of dissatisfaction with life – they just know things could be better for them and they need some help unravelling what “it” is.

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) did a survey in 2014. The results found that women are most likely to have had therapy, with nearly a third (32%) saying they had used the services of a counsellor or psychotherapist, compared to 23% of men. People aged between 35 and 44 are most likely to have had counselling or psychotherapy with 38% (well over a third) having had it. In total, over half of Britons have either had therapy themselves, or know someone who has. These results demonstrate to me how the stigma is finally lifting as people recognise that there is no shame in seeking help. The role of professional BACP registered counsellors is to help their clients gain clarity and support them through difficult periods in their lives. We understand that life is busy, often complicated and how overwhelming it can sometimes be. We understand that when we try to suppress and ignore difficult feelings it can be confusing or even frightening to try and move forward. We trust that our clients are the best experts in their feelings when they’re not feeling good and we work with them to reach an outcome that they feel happy with by being with them and listening without judging them. We feel privileged to be allowed to enter our clients’ worlds for the period of time that we work alongside them and honour and respect the trust placed in us. I wish you a peaceful and contented 2016 and I hope that this is the year that you will feel good about you.

(Una Cavanagh is a BACP registered counsellor in private practice.) 44

Health Matters

New Year Nostalgia I

THINK I might be getting old, dear reader. I like a nap, am quite partial to a garibaldi biscuit and a nice cuppa, but more worryingly of all – I often find myself reminiscing about my childhood. Remember when Wagon Wheels were the size of your head? Remember when a tube of sherbet would last you all day and the liquorice was as long as your arm? Remember when we only had a few hours of children’s TV after school but it was good quality stuff like Rentaghost, Why Don’t You and Morph? Remember roller skates with flashing wheels and big orange spacehoppers? Nope. Oh dear – is my age showing again? It’s quite nice to look back at the good old days. We have been displaying some of our old pictures in the waiting room of when the Surgery first opened and it is amazing how much history we have for such a relatively new Surgery. We’ve been through such a lot in the past ten years and it’s nice for the new faces that we have here to look back on where we started and be encouraged by how far we have come in such a short time. We are often reminded of the days before Beversbrook, when we were known as Church Street Surgery and given the time it is lovely to reminisce with our longstanding patients. The old Surgery premises are now a cake shop and our patients seem to approve greatly of this!

by Emmy Butcher

here at Beversbrook, with the introduction of a new clinical system. Almost everything is now carried out through the use of computers and we even have a Facebook page! You may be interested to know that very soon patients can do more than reminisce about previous visits to their GP as, thanks to the wonder of technology, they can also see part of their medical record too from the comfort of their own tablet, PC or smartphone. This is all part of an ambitious plan of the NHS to embrace technology so that patients can have a more modern, convenient and responsive service to meet their healthcare needs. Nowadays it is quite common for patients to be able to use online services to order medication and book appointments but the NHS would like GP Surgeries to enable you to have more control over managing your own health by allowing access to your medical history and test results. Some GP Surgeries have already started this process. Here at Beversbrook patients can request access to medical records through our online patient service, or can collect and complete an access request form in Surgery. From April 2016 all GP Surgeries will be contractually obliged to provide an online service for patients to access parts of their own records - in particular coded

Some of our serving staff members can remember an NHS without computers. When all our notes were handwritten and appointments were made using index cards and a diary. Technology has moved us along greatly and none so much as over the past three years 46

information on medication, allergies, illnesses, immunisations and test results. Accessing this information via a computer or your smartphone may prove very useful when needing to quickly check up on your allergies or wanting to see the results of your recent blood test. For those patients with long term illnesses, access to medical records can help to improve an understanding of their condition and mean that they are in control of decisions made about the management of their long term health. With technology moving faster than most of us can keep up with these changes can feel daunting for some. Computers, tablets and smartphones are no substitute for a face to face discussion with a Receptionist and many people do not have access to computers or online services. To help address these concerns, NHS England are delivering a National Programme of training in digital skills and access to technology aimed at people who might otherwise not be able to use services online. For more information visit www. ukonlinecentres.com or phone 0800 771234 to find out where your nearest course is. I think patients having access to their own medical records is a technological step in the right direction. I am not sure how I feel about virtual clinics and Skype consultations, which is the NHS talk of the future. Not that I am anti-technology but I don’t think it will be long before the NHS realises how much money can be saved on cake breaks if they employ a robot to replace a certain Practice Manager……eeek! Advanced Facelift Massage offered by a therapist in Chippenham Wiltshire Reflexologist Gabriela Slater is now one of only a handful of practitioners in the county offering an innovative treatment– Advanced Facelift Massage. Gabriela, aged 41, who lives in Chippenham, has trained with one of the UK’s leading authorities on this method – Ziggie Bergman at the London School of Reflexology. “This treatment can help anyone who feels concerned that their face no longer reflects their personality and they want to minimise the effects of wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, sagging jowls or frown line. The treatment is perfect for someone who might want to look refreshed and youthful prior to a family event such as a wedding, birthday or other celebration” said Gabriela Slater. The Advanced Facelift Massage treatment is always tailored to individual needs. The deep work on facial tissue increases blood flow, nerve supply is stimulated

which results in skin that looks more contoured, fresher and tighter. It also encourages lymphatic drainage, helps to detoxify and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. The treatment can slow down the aging process and achieve younger-looking and healthier skin. Organic Rose and Frankincense Oils are used by Gabriela during the Facelift Massage to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. One of Gabriela’s recent clients had a course of 5 treatments to reduce the effect of wrinkles around her eyes, forehead and also reduce the appearance of a frown line. “It was a great experience and just after my first session my skin felt tighter and ‘glowing’. The next few sessions made my skin really smooth and soft, I noticed that my wrinkles and frown line were significantly reduced. I was so impressed with how my skin had improved over the course of treatments. I would highly recommend it as it really worked for me.” Gabriela said: “This is a gentle, non-invasive way to lift the skin naturally and stimulate collagen production. It sculpts the face,

Big Garden Birdwatch by Debbie Singh-Bhatti

This year the Big Garden Birdwatch takes place on the weekend of 30th and 31st January. It started back in 1979 when the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) invited its junior members to count the number of birds in their gardens over a weekend in winter. The aim was to work out the ten most common birds in the United Kingdom, and thanks to children’s TV programme Blue Peter, thirty four thousand youngsters took part! The Big Garden Birdwatch has taken place every year since, with over half a million people – adults as well as children - regularly taking part. Last year, more than 8.5 million birds were counted, with house sparrows being the most common sighting, followed by starlings, blackbirds, blue tits and wood pigeons. The annual survey has identified that certain species of bird are on the decline (such as house sparrows and starlings) whilst others are on the increase (for example blue tits and wood pigeons). By monitoring trends in this way, problems can be spotted early and first steps taken to put things right. To take part, you need to watch for one hour the birds that land in your garden or local park, record the highest number of each bird species you see at the same time (not over the entire hour, as you may end up counting some birds twice), then report back your findings. For more details on how to get involved, visit: www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdwatch 56

Gardening

Gardening Resolutions by Rachel Leverton

I’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions. 1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span. 2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them. 3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are 58

already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease.

6. I will start another compost bin.

Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy.

It’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot.

4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening.

7. I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties.

This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.

Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning.

5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll buy an irrigation system.

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2016

Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy.

Security Alert! How can we protect ourselves against fraud?

66

THESE DAYS we are required to use so many PINS and passwords that many people choose something simple to remember, such as their child’s name or date of birth. Fraudsters know this and in their hands such information becomes a valuable tool. But how do they get hold of such information?

Can you keep a secret? In a research study carried out for the Infosecurity Europe trade show, four out of five subjects questioned happily handed over the user name and password for their work PC to those carrying out the research. More surprising, were many of those who would not initially reveal their passwords did so after being bribed with chocolate!

Careless talk How many of us publish personal details on Facebook and other networking sites? We announce our favourite books, films; the names of our children and our pets for all to see.

Proper Passwords The best passwords are a completely random mix of characters and letters. Fraudsters have a hard time guessing them, even when they use dedicated software.

Gone Phishing NEVER click on links in unsolicited emails purporting to be from your bank or building society. If in doubt phone them first.

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2016

Security experts suggest that we use a separate password for each account we possess. But given that most of us have trouble remembering two or three passwords, you can see the problem with this approach. Fortunately, there are password managers available for under £30 which remember your various passwords and PINS but encrypt them to make them useless to anyone else. If you want the very latest in security technology, you can purchase a fingerprint reader for around £100 or an iris scanner for under £300. Most importantly, make sure you keep your PC’s security software updated. And beware people with clipboards offering chocolate!

A Good Read Sponsored by Devizes Books

Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins .................................

Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything,

and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo

.............................................................................................. It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eight book series. Charlie is a fairly normal 10 year old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life changes. He learns that his three unmarried great-aunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this: he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent: and besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs. Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed.

I wasn’t expecting that!

T

here’s a lovely song being played a lot on Radio 2 at the moment by Jamie Lawson entitled, “I wasn’t expecting that”. It tracks how a relationship develops from “an innocent kiss”, to a “month turning into a year”, to “a marriage in spring”, and “the three kids come and gone”. All through the song, we hear the words, “I wasn’t expecting that” as these wonderful events in life seemingly take the singer by surprise. Rather poignantly, at the end we hear the lyric “The nurses they came, they said its come back again, I wasn’t expecting that. She closed her eyes and took my heart by surprise… I wasn’t expecting that.” The You Tube video is a real tear jerker and comes with a wet-hanky warning! What expectations do you have for the New Year: more resolutions? Or perhaps a holiday or two planned? Come along to Israel with me in October (see insert). I wonder if you heard about the story of the vicar who was on a flight, which got into trouble, and it seemed that the end was nigh. The aircrew knew there was a “Reverend” on board, so discretely, the stewardess asked if he might do something religious. Immediately, the Vicar, stood up before the passengers. Perhaps this was his moment to call people to repentance or give their lives to Christ? Actually, he did, as any conscientious man of the cloth might do, gave some notices, announced a hymn and took up a collection. If the end was near, what would our reaction be? What are our expectations? Do we know what will happen? (or perhaps we’ll be saying “I wasn’t expecting that.”) According to the Bible at the end, it’s going to be really noisey: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 says, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.” Jesus is shouting, the Archangel Michael seems to be gathering the angelic host together and a loud trumpet is heralding the final battle. There’s no subtlety in that is there? There will be no mistaking that something huge is going on. And what might we expect to see? At the Ascension, in the book of Acts, two angels tell the disciples “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,

70

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2016

will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” In other words, Jesus will come down from the clouds. Revelation 1:7 agrees. It says, “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him.” There will not be a person on earth who is unaware of Jesus’ return. Jesus Himself describes the manner of His second coming. Matthew 24:27 tells us, “For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” I wonder if we are expecting any of this? And where are we in the picture? At the end of the world, some will be alive and witness it for themselves, and those who are dead will be raised with new bodies (1 Corinthians 15:5153). Those in Christ will meet Jesus in the air (1 Thess. 4). Were you expecting to be able to fly? The timing of the end and the return of Jesus is impossible to know (Mark 13:32-33), but what we do know is that it will come quickly and we are not to be caught out. Our job is to be prepared and ready to meet Jesus when he comes. Jesus will come back as a Judge to bring Justice to our world, and He will heal a broken world. Revelation 21 says, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; ...and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” Are we expecting that? So what does all that mean? I suppose it might mean living everyday as though it were the last. Not in the sense that we go and climb Mt.Kilimanjaro or run the London Marathon, but that we prepare ourselves and our hearts to meet Jesus at any moment. We do not need to be afraid, we just need to be ready. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk Fancy seeing the Holy Land for yourself? Stay in Jerusalem, swim in the Galilee. Keep Calm

A

You've almost a year before you have to do it all again!

HHHH! The flurry, scurrying and madness are all done with for almost another year! The mountains of torn and tatty wrapping paper, the sticky labels covered in carpet fluff, and the mince pie crumbs mashed into the carpets are all gone. (Memo to self – don’t forget to empty the vacuum cleaner before it explodes.) All the madness has given way to something akin to that flat feeling when you wake up in a cosy bed on Boxing day and realise you have no idea how to keep everyone amused and sane till the blessed day the rellies leave, the kids go back to school, and your next trip to the supermarket will be for the usual boring shop like toilet rolls, detergent, baked beans and plain biscuits! Luckily the smallish turkey and gammon joint are all eaten so there will be no moaning about leftovers on sarnies, and the last bowl of sherry trifle has vanished from the fridge overnight. Now all you have to do is reluctantly drag yourself from your warm cocoon, shuffle downstairs to put the kettle on – and face the mountain of washing up you were too tired (or tiddly) to tackle before you went to bed.

Finally, the rest of the herd of wildebeasts thunder downstairs, on goes the telly amid yells of “I wanted to watch that,” and, “It’s my turn to pick the progs today!” at which point I stick my head round the lounge door and offer my beloved family my usual seasonal greeting of, “SHUT THE HELL UP THE LOT OF YOU !” The kids exchange their usual pitying looks with each other, which clearly means, “The old dear’s in a mood. Hungover I expect. Best leave her alone till she cools down.”

By afternoon, everyone has refuelled their bodies with anything that they found in the fridge, there’s just the odd rustle of chocolate wrappers – which sends the dog into full alert mode, and someone has actually put the kettle on. Good Lord!

Thankful for small (very) mercies, I shuffle back to my coffee pot and reach for a biscuit. I reckon

Someone actually washed the dishes from not only last night, but from today’s lunch too.

I should have about fifteen minutes peace before they stampede into my “haven” in search of sustenance.

WOW!

Later in the week I shall persuade Fred to start his marathon trek up and down the loft ladder with all the tinsel and lights etc, but I shall leave them alone until the New Year begins. After all the excitement of the presents, the sparkling fairy lights and the fabulous food and fun, the few days between the 25th and January

O JOY !!! Muttering darkly to yourself, you swear that the first person to say they fancy a bacon butty will get a belt round the ‘earhole with something hard and blunt, plus the immortal words, “You know where the bleedin’ fridge is!” There isn’t enough coffee in Brazil to wake me up fully before lunch time, and woe betide anyone who attempts false cheerfulness before I’m on my sixth mug at least. 72

1st always seem a bit forlorn somehow, like a lone dancer slowly whirling around a deserted ballroom while the rising sun shows up the dusty and tattered remnants of the magnificent ball of just a few hours before. Sad in a way.

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2016

Well, I daresay there’s just one Boxing Day tradition I can keep. Settling back in my armchair, the TV muted to a dull roar, soon the only sounds to be heard in the room are the gentle rhythmic snores, and I’m not ashamed to admit it – mine are mingling in with the rest. Happy New Year everyone. …… Joanne Deacon @ 2016 ……
