Halloween, Trick or Treat - it’s a time for children to have fun so if you want to keep the kids busy, they can learn how to carve a pumpkin lantern. The farm shops are full of pumpkins at this time of year so go along, pick one up and have a go! Many thanks to everyone who sent in contributions to this issue including the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Brinkworth Dairy, Westonbirt Arboretum and many more. Until next time ...

CARP is Charity of the Year
SHAKESPEARE LIVE Shakespeare meets Dickens's A Christmas Carol as the inebriated n'er do well Christopher Sly from The Taming of the Shrew encounters the mysterious Will. The none too comfortable journey through the seven ages of his own life that Will then leads him through shows Sly in no uncertain terms the choices he has made so far, the ways in which he could have dealt with life better, and the options he has for the rest of his life, good and bad. In the end, he will have to make a decision about his future - will he opt for virtuous chastity and honesty, or will he stick with his selfish and self-indulgent behaviour? Using extracts from many of Shakespeare's plays, both serious and funny, this is an original, entertaining and thought-provoking piece of theatre, written for and first produced by local company, Shakespeare Live, this August at the Royal Shakespeare Company's outdoor venue, The Dell. Performances are at The Mission Theatre, Bath, on October 1st; The Pound Theatre, Corsham, on October 3rd; The Wharf Theatre, Devizes, on October 5th; and St Margaret's Hall, Bradford on Avon, on October 7th.

Local girl selected for Beauty Pageant Georgia Delaney from Calne has been selected to compete for a place in an exciting beauty pageant being held in Disneyland Paris! She has been chosen by the Face Of The Globe organisation to compete at a regional heat being held at the Crowne Plaza, Crawley on Sunday 29th November 2015. The contest has four age categories ranging from 5 years with no upper age limit and Georgia who is 25 years old, will be in the Adult Category from which, if she is selected as one of the five representatives from that group, will be invited to Disneyland Paris in April 2016 to compete against girls from all over the World! Georgia is sponsored by Your Inspired Beauty (www.yourinspiredbeauty.co.uk) a mobile beauty salon. Georgia is a very bubbly and ambitious girl, and hopes that the interviews with the judges on the day will show this side of her personality, as the finalists will be judged not just on looks, but also their personalities, and awards such as Miss Publicity and Miss Charity in aid of Rainbow Child Foundation (No 1158348.) which was founded by X Factor and Dancing On Ice star Chico Slimani. Cherhill WI Fashion Show success We had a great evening at the Fashion Show - ladies came from Pewsham, Hardenhuish, Calne Morning, Lacock, Lansdowne and Derry Hill WIs in addition to our own members and friends. Most of the group members had heard about the evening from the Town Crier! In total approximately 80 ladies attended, our own ladies were the models and were made up by a Clarins therapist from Swindon, and dressed by Country Casuals of Marlborough. Country Casuals ran a raffle in aid of their chosen charity Macmillan Cancer Care and raised over ÂŁ250 during the event. Their aim is to sponsor a Macmillan Nurse for one year (ÂŁ50,000) and quite a number of those present were thankful for such nurses assisting with their own, and their family's illnesses. So, all in all, a really super evening! Gaile Bishop, Cherhill WI

His stated aim is to make The John Bentley School an outstanding centre for learning. After his first week Mr Tudor shared his thoughts on the future direction of The John Bentley School; “This is an incredibly exciting time for everyone associated with The John Bentley School as we move forward into a bright future. I am sure the Calne and surrounding area community will be impressed with the ambitious plans the governors and staff have for the future direction of the school. We intend to embark on a journey which will see us develop into a thriving hub for learning which celebrates creativity and innovation. “I have already been impressed by the dedication of the whole staff in terms of the hard work they put in to support our pupils in achieving more than they ever thought possible. In return the response of our pupils has been nothing short of exemplary. Their attitude to learning and willingness to challenge themselves and those around them is inspiring and I am confident that as a school at the heart of the community we will achieve our goals”.

Sing Pop, Soul & Gospel at Derry Hill
Formed in Derry Hill, PSG is a growing choir organisation focused on providing a great social experience whilst still creating an exceptional sound and putting on several concerts every year! Each choir rehearses weekly and once every 4·6 weeks is joined by a live session band to add extra flair to the sound and performance. Whether you are an experienced singer or just someone wanting a fun way to meet people from your community, PSG is definitely for you. We have opportunities for confident singers to sing solo, or if you just want to take a back seat then just sing what you feel comfortable with.
We don’t require any audition, so just come along and start singing, dancing and having a laugh as we create fantastic Pop, Soul and Gospel music. A normal PSG rehearsal costs £4 which you simply pay on the night, however if you would rather pay termly, that is also an option. Just have a word with the person on the door when you arrive at your first rehearsal. On live band nights the PSG rehearsal costs the slightly higher price of £5 to cover the cost of the musicians. Pension Freedoms by Tim Collyer
Y
ou would have to be living underground to miss the fact that in April, legislation was introduced to give everyone access to their pension funds on reaching the age of 55. Opinions are divided on whether it is good, but it is certainly not straightforward. Broadly speaking, if your pension benefits are valued at less than £30,000 (and not part of a final salary scheme), you should be able to access them with a simple phone call to your provider. The matter has now become further confused in that some insurance companies insist you get financial advice before releasing any money. So what are the problems in doing that? Any money spent early will not be available later in retirement and once you remove money from your pension you are taking it out of a tax free growth environment. The money becomes subject to tax once more (unless you spend it or put it in an ISA). There are also technical issues like underlying guarantees which you may have to give up to release your
money. Your provider may not warn you of this. A major concern for a lot of people is tax. The Telegraph newspaper headlines on the 25th June this year read ‘Pension Freedoms to yield £1.2bn tax windfall for Treasury’. The issue is that any pension income released will be added to your other income in that tax year and will be taxed accordingly e.g.: If you earn £25,000 you pay some income tax at 20%. If you release a Pension of £28,000 on top £7,000 is tax free. £17,385 is taxed at 20% (£3,477). £3,615 is taxed at 40% (£1,446). Just to make things difficult you will almost certainly be put onto emergency tax for the payment, so may have to pay tax of £11,445 including some at 45%. The overpaid tax (£6,522) needs to be reclaimed. By talking to an appropriately qualified adviser, you can sometimes access money in a way
that the income tax is reduced, I have had cases where no tax is paid on the income. You will however get appropriate warnings on the pitfalls. I always conduct an initial meeting without charge which should point you in the right direction or could lead to advice if necessary with all costs disclosed before you make a decision. For answers to your pension questions, please email me: tim. collyer@ alexanderhousefs.co.uk or call 07958 777924 or 0800 3161811. Brinkworth Dairy HERE IS A BIG CHEESE on the Wiltshire food scene for which awards and acclaim are pouring in thick and fast.
Brinkworth Dairy with its cheeses, ice cream, butter, yogurt, cream milk and honey is a fine food force to be reckoned with. Brinkworth Dairy makes cream, butter, yogurt, milk, icecream and cheese at our on farm dairy. From farmers’ markets, wholesalers and shops to pubs and restaurants across London and the South West, its dairy delicacies are snapped up by foodies wherever they appear. Thanks to its personal Wedding Cheese cake service, Brinkworth is also a hit with brides and grooms. Managing Director Ceri Cryer grew up on the family dairy farm and in 2006 started her own cheese making business on the Wiltshire farm. Ceri is a fifth generation cheesemaker whose family has farmed at Hill End Farm, near Chippenham, since 1910.
Brinkworth Dairy featured recently on the BBC series Terry and Mason’s Great Food Trip to Devizes. L-R: Mason McQueen, Ceri Cryer and Sir Terry Wogan.
Today’s its pedigree Friesian herd grazes on traditional lush pastures of the Dauntsey Vale to produce high quality milk and the full range of dairy products.
Business 2006 and Wiltshire Life Independent Food Producer, by being named Best Cheese in this year’s Taste of the West competition.
The Dairy’s constant championing of its home county - the cheeses are named after local places - is helping to put Wiltshire well and truly on the gourmet map, and its recent revival of an 18th century popular cheese, Wiltshire Loaf mentioned in two of Jane Austen’s novels, is signposting even more people to the area. The cheeses alone are enough to have one reaching for the crackers. Along with the revived Wiltshire Loaf - winner of the British Cheese Awards’ Best Territorial Cheese - are Brinkworth Blue, Garlic and Pepper and the Royal Bassett Blue. This last variety added yet another prize to the dairy’s growing collection, which includes Best New
Further 2014 successes have included being a finalist manufacturer in the Enterprising Wiltshire Awards and winning a Jongia Cheesemaking Scholarship. Such ripening fortunes have been reflected in impressive growth. Profits have almost trebled, from £6k to £17k in the last three years, along with increasing turnover and staff recruitment, while processing has gone from two to five days a week. “Our Taste of the West Best Cheese win brought new wholesalers and shops interested in stocking our cheese and we are planning to double the creamery’s size to boost production,” says Ceri who is available on her mobile, email, Twitter and Facebook to talk to customers about their requirements. “We also communicate with wholesalers and shops so they know when their orders are ready, give talks throughout Wiltshire and maintain regular Facebook updates,” “By talking directly to end users at farmers’ markets we gain product feedback and can then make appropriate adjustments. We do ensure that everyone who does business with us ends up with something nice to eat.” To find out more about Brinkworth Dairy, go to www.brinkworthdairy.co.uk. Health Matters
Stoptober – What’s Stopping You? by Emmy Butcher
G
OSH I HATE LONG CAR JOURNEYS. A large number of my close family live in the Shetland Islands and it takes at least a full days’ worth of travelling to visit them, including car travel, flights and various ferries. We often arrive late at night and the journey leaves us feeling exhausted and a bit queasy, however waking up to quality fresh air, stunning scenery and the smiling faces of friends and family is well worth it. We didn’t used to travel much when I was a child and if we did it was always in my Dad’s beat up old Morris Minor, the back seat crammed to bursting with me and my sisters and the dogs and all our various gear. My memories of childhood car journeys are hot, stuffy, cramped and generally unpleasant. I remember always arriving at our destination feeling a bit green around the gills and the fact that both my parents smoked in the car only added to the nausea. I have never smoked, but both my siblings do. I wonder if those car journeys of our childhood had any influence on this. Studies show that children start smoking by copying adult behaviours and that 65% of people who do smoke start before 18 years old. From 1st October, children across the Nation will be spared dreadful, smoke filled car journeys of my youth, as new legislation will be introduced making it illegal to smoke in a car with anyone under the age of 18 present. These regulations have been introduced as part of a package of measures under the Children and Families Act 2014 and both the driver and the smoker will be slapped with a £50 fine for non-compliance.
36
It is an inevitable fact that parents who are smokers expose their children to second hand smoke (SHS). Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of SHS exposure and by smoking in a car levels of SHS can be dangerously high due to the enclosed space, even when the vehicle is well ventilated. SHS exposure in children is linked to an increased risk of a range of illnesses, including lower respiratory tract infections, asthma, middle ear infections and meningococcal disease. There is also a link to sudden unexpected death in infancy and SHS can have adverse effects on the health of your unborn baby if you are exposed whilst pregnant. This year the amazing Stop Smoking team here at Beversbrook Medical Centre were presented with a Public Health Award for our outstanding achievement in helping patients to quit smoking. Every year we are set a target number of patients who Public Health England would like us to help quit and I am very proud to say that we smashed that target by 200%! With smoking being our biggest preventable killer, (80,000 people die a year in England because of smoking) our Smoking Cessation advisors here at Beversbrook are very proud of the fact that we have been able to support our patients efforts to give up smoking for good and improve their health and those of their loved ones.
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
If you are serious about quitting the habit, October is by far the best time of the year to do so, with the launch of Public Health’s Stoptober Campaign. Comedians including Rodd Gilbert, Al Murray (Pub Landlord) and Bill Bailey are encouraging smokers to take a 28 day quit challenge. Quitters signing up on the Stoptober website will receive exclusive celebrity messages of support and encouragement straight to their phones and via e-mail throughout October, in addition to lots of other support and encouragement available from Public Health England. Your GP Surgery will also be supporting Stoptober and making an appointment with a smoking cessation advisor is a good place to start. To join the campaign or for more details visit the website stoptober/smokefree. nhs.uk. Wiltshire Public Health can also help to advise you of your local stop smoking service and provide support and guidance, for more information visit wiltshirestopsmoking.co.uk or call them on 0300 003 4562. Where my parents irresponsible to smoke in the car with me and my sisters present? No, I don’t think so – they just weren’t aware of the health risks. I am pleased to say both are now quitters and car journeys with them are more pleasant. Although, whenever either of them are in a car with me they always seem to moan about my terrible driving making them feel sick – haha! Revenge is a dish best served cold… Mrs Emmy Butcher Practice Manager & Business Partner, Beversbrook Medical Centre, Calne emmybutcher@nhs.net

Do I need a Flu Jab?
M
OST OF US KNOW by now that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a flu jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc. But pharmacists will tell you that even if you don’t fall into one of the categories above a flu jab is still a sensible precaution.
Tennis Coaching Courses Beversbrook Sports Facility, Beversbrook Road, Calne, Wiltshire SN11 9FL www.calnetennisclub.com
But why would a healthy person request a flu vaccine? Well, seasonal flu is a deeply unpleasant illness. It generally requires a week or so off work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. The average person with flu infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a flu jab a worthwhile investment. A business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason. Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab. Unless you fall into one of the at-risk categories you will have to be vaccinated, but it’s inexpensive (generally under £15) and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time off work. Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today.

Fashion Trends for Autumn Fashion goes Retro this season
W
AY back in March the world’s fashion gurus got together and presented their ideas for this autumn’s fashion trends. There seems to be something for everyone, so read on to decide who you plan on being this fall! First off, if you went 70s last season, there’s no need to ditch the clothes currently lining your closet! Seventies is still very much in, so hang on to your flares and your ankle flashing trousers and for a truly up to date look thrown in a folksy printed floral dress, fringed waistcoat, corduroy dungarees and a peasant blouse. Suede and patchwork knits are the fabrics to go for, and the poncho is back as the season’s key piece! You can also expect to see more retro with an 80s revival. Look out for power shoulders, ruffles, giant cuffs and big retro belts. Colour block knits and rainbow colour combos along with vivid, graphic patterns in bold colours are on their way, whilst jeweltoned Lurex is the party fabric of the season. Expect lots of glitter and sequins too on your special nights out! It looks like the experts are expecting a cold end to the year, with warm, fuzzy coats being the order of the day. From curly sheep gilets to sumptuous shearling overcoats, the faux fur fluff factor is offering lots of tactile fun this autumn and winter. Add a giant scarf 40
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
to complete the look and you’re sure to keep warm as well as stylish. If fur isn’t your thing, you can still look and feel red hot in a luxurious quilted jacket or an overcoat trimmed with top stitching and big buttons. Both are in vogue this season. High necks are back! Call them what you will – polo necks, turtle necks or roll necks – the higher the neckline, the better! Pair them up with anything from dungarees to a glitzy mini dress or mannish tailored suit and you’re sure to be up there as one of the season’s trend setters. Think outside the box, and conjure up new ways to layer what’s already in your wardrobe for an up to the minute look. Polos are ideal for this. Think polo, plus shirt, plus coat and you’re on your way to creating one of the new looks for autumn! Finally, how does a bit of gothic romance grab you? Moody lace, high ruffle necklines, frills and luxurious embellishments teamed up with floor-skimming lengths of sheer fabric will certainly give you that ‘lady is a vamp’ look. Add deep, berry coloured lips and piled up hair and there’ll be no resisting your dark glam appeal! Have fun as you dress up this autumn!

Westonbirt Arboretum
The ten best ways to enjoy autumn at Westonbirt T
HE BLAZE OF FIERY COLOURS provide a spectacular show each year and the team at the Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt are celebrating the beginning of the famous autumn displays by releasing their favourite ways to best enjoy the season. Staff are encouraging Westonbirt visitors to make the most of autumn by enjoying a list of ten seasonal experiences as they admire the explosion of red, orange and yellow hues throughout the 600 acre site near Tetbury in Gloucestershire. From conker challenges to tasty picnics, collecting colourful leaves and taking beautiful memory photos, autumn provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy nature at its best, and spend time outdoors in the fresh air with family and friends. Simon Hough, Recreation Manager, at the National Arboretum, said: “Westonbirt is a stunning place to visit all year round, but for the staff here autumn really is the most exciting season. As thousands of trees start turning, it soon transforms Westonbirt into a kaleidoscope of colour, which is truly magical. This is why we wanted to share our favourite ways to enjoy and experience autumn at Westonbirt, as there’s so much more to see! We’ll be hosting a variety of exciting events as the days get colder during the next few months, which the whole family can enjoy and make some fantastic memories. So grab your woolly jumpers and wellies, and enjoy the show!”
The Westonbirt team’s ten favourite ways to enjoy autumn at the arboretum are: • Wrap up warm – Prepare for crisp autumn days and nights by pulling on your favourite woolly jumper, knitted hat and gloves; perfect for a walk through the trees! • The race is on – Download our free TreeQuests app to take part in our exciting digital quest around Westonbirt at autumn. Challenge friends and family to run from tree to tree, and complete a number of interactive challenges to win as many gold medals as possible. • Capture the spirit of Westonbirt – Why not take part in one of our popular one-day photography workshops? Develop your technique and snap away to capture the best of autumn at Westonbirt on camera. • Become a leaf collector – Collect as many different fallen leaves as you can and try to find one in every colour. Don’t forget to sniff out the Katsura tree too, which smells like candyfloss! • Get closer to nature – Immerse yourself in autumn by making a chair in the heart of Silk Wood. Take in the seasonal colours while trying your hand at a new skill during our six-day course and revive some of the oldest traditions of English chair making. • Practice your survival skills – Autumn is the perfect time of year for young adventurers to try their hand at den building,
survival skills and enjoy twilight walks. Don’t miss our popular bushcraft and survival youth club and book a place for your teens (14-18 years). • Pack a picnic – Why not sit back and relax with an autumnal picnic? Take in the dazzling display of colour at Westonbirt with a warm thermos and some tasty treats in the heart of the arboretum. • Hold autumn in your hands – Get off the beaten track and take your family on an adventure. See, feel and smell autumn on our family trail by comparing the different colours, shapes and textures of autumn leaves. • Challenge with conkers! – Take on mum and dad or challenge your friends to a competition! Find several specimens just outside our Great Oak Hall and let battle commence! • Get cosy after a long walk – Indulge in a steaming mug of hot chocolate in our cafe or tuck into a delicious bowl of locally made soup to warm up after hours of exploring the arboretum. The National Arboretum is situated at Westonbirt, three miles from Tetbury in Gloucestershire and is open from 9am Monday to Sunday all year round except Christmas Day. All things Autumn by Marie Wykes, Launch2learning Tuition Centre
O
CTOBER HAS LANDED. When I was at school this meant that we had to spend hours learning "Ode to Autumn" by Keats to avoid the profound annoyance of Mr Kelly, who insisted our heads be steeped in "mellow fruitfulness" and "mists" and all things Autumn. Mr Kelly used to recount, at least three times a week, his various Navy experiences. These included being thrown into the sea from the side of the ship when they crossed the Equator. Apparently it was the making of him! I can think of other ways!!!!
Marie Wykes has been a teacher for 25 years and is a mother of four. She runs the Launch2learning Tuition Centre in Calne. See more of her insights into life on the chalk face in her blog www.launch2leaning.co.uk

CRB/ DBS checked and insured see on television makeover programmes. School has other Autumn challenges. We no longer feel the need to insist 30 children learn and recite Keats, however, with a brand new national curriculum to keep us on our toes, teachers have certainly had to navigate through a few mists. Children huddle in damp corners at break-time chattering about whether they will be a witch or a ghost. Teachers huddle in staff rooms clutching coffee mugs and sighing as they watch the last 5 years planning being hurled into the caretakers skip! I bet somewhere, in a dusty corner of a school, Mr Kelly is pouring through national curriculum documents and telling some awe struck newly qualified teacher that he has seen it all before. And how he was hurled into the sea when they crossed the Equator..... and how it was the making of him! 44

I had a very reluctant son and I was convinced he would put up every barrier possible to prevent him from enjoying the plan Marie had geared up for him. He came out of the initial session and his words were ‘That was amazing! I can’t wait for next week!’ Very happy child and delighted mum!” Sally

Fireworks by Debbie Singh-Bhatti
F
IREWORKS HAVE BEEN around for as long as we can remember and date back to 200BC. Chinese people discovered that by putting green bamboo stalks over fire, the wood expanded and created a bang and sparks. This wood dried to create a flaky powder, hence, fireworks were born. These scared off enemies and the Chinese thought they also warded off evil spirits. They made war weaponry by filling the stalks with the gunpowder, and shot these as arrows. Marco Polo is credited with introducing fireworks to Europe but it is thought throughout the Middle East they were used even earlier, as Arabs used gunpowder obtained through the silk trade during the Crusades. 46
Italian pyrotechnicians created the aerial shell, where the fireworks are launched upwards to create a majestic array of colours. But how do we get these vibrant colours? Well, metal salts are put into ‘stars’ (small clay lumps), which when lit create the sound and visual light effects which delight adults and children alike. Fireworks are used for all manner of celebrations today – and whether it’s U.S. Independence Day in America, Diwali in November, or the Don Valley Grass Bowl in Sheffield in Yorkshire, family and friends gather to enjoy the marvellous visual delights and sounds of an invention which began by just heating a piece of wood!

Halloween
Pumpkins at the ready … T
HERE ARE BIG TUBS of pumpkins outside the supermarkets, along with costumes, fake blood and multipacks of sweets in the aisles. Halloween is almost upon us. But why do we celebrate it, when did trick or treating start, and what’s the point of carving pumpkins? As many people know, Halloween is short for All Hallows’ Eve. All Hallows’ Day (also known as All Saints’ Day) was an important occasion in the early Christian calendar and is still recognised by many Christians today. It is a national holiday in some predominately Catholic countries and is seen as a time to recognise and remember saints. It is believed that many Halloween traditions pre-date Christianity, and actually date back to the ancient Gaelic festival Samhain, which was held to mark the transition from harvest time to winter. Samhain was seen to be a time when the boundaries between worlds, particularly those of the
48

living and the dead, were loosened, enabling spirits to cross through into our world. Bonfires were lit to cleanse the air and offer protection. People would often dress up as evil spirits in order to appease the ‘real’ spirits into not harming them, their families or their livestock. The ‘evil witch’ may have its roots in the Pagan goddess, The Crone, who was celebrated at Samhain for her wisdom and nurture of the Earth. In the Middle Ages, poor people would visit homes, offering to pray for the dead on All Soul’s Day (November 2nd), in exchange for food. This is likely where trick or treating started. Trick or treating may also be related to ‘guising’, a tradition where children would dress up and perform a song, dance, or other entertainment in exchange for a sweet treat. Pumpkin carving is believed to date back to the 1800s. Originally, turnips were carved and a candle placed inside. It appears that these lanterns served numerous
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
purposes: to frighten spirits away; to guide travellers home safely; and simply to light the way in a time before street lights were commonplace. Pumpkins started to replace turnips when Irish immigrants took their Halloween traditions with them to America. Pumpkins were easier to acquire there than turnips, and soon became more popular as they are usually larger and much easier to carve! In recent years, pumpkin carving has become something of an art form, with elaborate designs often replacing simple grotesque faces. Black cats, spiders and bats are common Halloween symbols, and likely relate to the idea of a witch’s ‘familiar’ – an animal that was said to be a demon in disguise. Halloween is now celebrated in numerous countries across the globe, although it is particularly popular in the United States. Samhain itself is also still celebrated by pagans and wiccans around the world.

Grow your own Pumpkins! by Angie Jones-Moore
T
he nights begin to draw in, and the clocks turn back an hour on the 25th of October. Personally, this is my favourite season. Contrary to what some may believe, the beginning of autumn is actually a time for growing. A final flourish of green covers the fields, some flowers thrive and the fruits and vegetables plump up before the inevitable harvest.
The popularity of the pumpkin has increased and become a vegetable we are familiar with, the softer texture and larger size makes it much easier to carve for Halloween, following the American tradition.
Pumpkins grow, grow and grow some more! They superseded anything I had imagined and rapidly took over the patch with huge leaves and numerous flowers on each plant. Each flower represents a pumpkin… we are going to have an awful lot of pumpkin pie! They required little intervention from us which makes them the perfect vegetable for children to grow, water and occasional slug removal was all Daniel needed to do.
In years gone by the vegetable of choice for Halloween was a turnip or a swede, the agonising task of carving the hardest of all the vegetables into a frightening face was generally left to the member of the family with the strongest arms, leaving an opening for a candle to enhance the scariest of faces ready for Halloween. Pumpkins have become popular over recent years; a vegetable which was not often seen is now readily available in supermarkets. Pumpkin pie is a dish we associate with America and their traditions, one which has travelled across the seas to Britain with more of us buying pumpkins and making our own pumpkin recipes. A peculiar looking vegetable and a huge one! Pumpkins are thought to have originated in North America; with the oldest evidence, being pumpkin related seeds dating between 7000 and 5500 BC that were found in Mexico.
52
We set about making a pumpkin patch, the area needed to be suitable for these tender young seedlings to flourish. Daniel planted each seedling a foot apart, with my husband and I thinking all we need is one pumpkin to actually grow from these five little plants and that will be Daniel happy.
In April my son, Daniel, was given a pumpkin starter kit. ‘To be ready for harvest in time for Halloween.’ Halloween is a huge part of children’s social calendars; therefore Daniel was very excited at the prospect of growing his own enormous pumpkin to carve into an elaborate scary face. Daniel planted the seeds into pots on the window sill; they rapidly grew, beyond his and my expectations. With little belief the seeds would turn into anything other than rotten seeds I was pleasantly surprised the plants were starting out well; clearly Daniel has the gardeners touch. I was completely unprepared for the fact that they may actually grow; the next stage was to plant them outside.
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
An American tradition, a foreign vegetable which thrives in the British climate; brightly coloured, useful and versatile. The pumpkin is a most welcome addition to the British autumn.

Terrific Tulips by Rachel Leverton
I
F I COULD GROW only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms.
I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?
They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm/ 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm/ 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you.
54
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
POT LUCK Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16-18 bulbs. Cover the base with at least 5cm / 2inches of drainage material and 12cm / 5 inches of soil-less multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May.

Halloween Food & Drink
Pumpkin Soup
Serves 6 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes (If roasting pumpkin add 20-30 minutes) INGREDIENTS Soup 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped 1kg / 2lb 3oz pumpkins or squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks ½ -1 tsp ground cumin 700ml / 24 fl oz vegetable stock or chicken stock 142ml / 5fl oz pot double cream Salt and pepper Garnish 75g / 3oz lardons Chopped chilli (optional) Tiny sage leaves (optional) Method Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently fry the finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan with the ground cumin, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour the vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour the pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. While the soup is cooking heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the lardons until deep golden brown. Add some chopped chilli and a few small sage leaves to taste, then cook for a few mins more until they too are tinged with colour. Reheat the soup if needed, season to taste, then serve scattered with the lardon garnish.
Food for Halloween! 58
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
Note: Although this recipe will work with Halloween pumpkins they tend to be bred for size rather than flavour. If you want to use a Halloween pumpkin I’d recommend drizzling the pumpkin pieces with olive oil first, mixing them with the cumin and roasting them in the oven on Gas 6 / 200C for 20-30 minutes. Then follow the recipe as before. Roasting brings out the maximum flavour.

Wildlife
Surprise arrival of second Rhino calf
O
N TUESDAY 18TH AUGUST, at around 7pm, Cotswold Wildlife Park had a rather unexpected arrival. White Rhino Nancy gave birth to her second calf. Keepers knew Nancy was pregnant, but the actual birth came as a bit of a surprise and a little earlier than expected.
Births in captivity are considered extremely rare, with only fourteen White Rhinos being born in European zoos in the last twelve months. Cotswold Wildlife Park was responsible for two out of the three recorded UK births. The new addition is the sixth member to join the ‘crash’ (the collective noun for a group of Rhinos). Curator Jamie Craig commented: “After almost forty years of desperately trying to breed from our old group of Rhinos with no success, we are delighted to now have had three calves since 2013. The newest member of the crash was somewhat more of a surprise than we’d like, but at present, all seems to be going well.” It’s been a remarkable few years for the Rhino family. In 2013, first-time parents Monty and Nancy delighted staff and visitors when they produced the first calf in the Park’s forty-three year history - a female named Astrid. Two years later, she has been joined by a baby brother, who is yet to be named. To add to the celebrations, earlier this year, another of the Park’s breeding females, Ruby, gave birth to a male calf, named Ian. White Rhinos (Ceratotherium simum ssp. simum) have always been an important species at the Wildlife Park, which was founded by Mr John Heyworth in 1970. His son Reggie Heyworth, Managing Director of Cotswold Wildlife Park, commented: “You wait forty years, then it seems like three come along at once! This is such a happy event for the Park, and I have to pinch myself when I see six rhinos on the lawn.” Females only reproduce every two-and-a-half to five years, so the window of opportunity for successful reproduction is limited. After a gestation period of sixteen to eighteen months, a single calf is born. Nancy is proving, once again, to be an excellent and very protective mother. A newborn calf will stand up within one hour of birth and immediately attempt to suckle, although may be a little unsteady on his feet for the first few days. He will remain under the watchful eye of his mother, suckling from her for approximately one year. Their bond is an intensely
strong one and the calf will remain with his mother for at least two years, benefiting from her protection. Females guard their offspring aggressively and are intimidating adversaries if challenged. Unbelievably, these iconic animals were once the rarest subspecies of any Rhino and were on the verge of extinction in the early 1900s, when it was believed only twenty to fifty animals remained in their native African homeland. Thanks to excellent and sustained protection, they are now the most common of the five Rhino subspecies, although poaching in the last five years has once again escalated to serious levels, driven by demand for rhino horn from the traditional medicine market of China and the Far East. Visitors can see the new calf daily from 10am to 6pm (last entry at 4.30pm) in the large Rhino paddock and solar powered Rhino House. ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION: Monty and Nancy are bot h nine yea
rs old. In 2009, Nancy (along wit h Ruby) made the eleven thousand kilometre jou rney from Mafunyane Ga me Farm in South Africa to the UK to join young ma le Monty. Shortly after her arrival, Prime Minister and local MP David Cameron visited the Park and named the new female Rhino Nancy (after his daughter). Mr Cameron still visits the Wil dlife Park with his family. Cotswold Wildlife Park is committed to Rhino conservation and works closely with Tusk Trust to promote vital conservat ion work. Find out more at www.cotswoldwildlifep ark.co.uk/conservation and www.tusk.org. White Rhinos are the larg est of the five Rhino species and range throug hout the grassland of Southern Africa. In 2012, a team of Europe an palaeontologists discovered a nine-millio n-year old Rhinoceros sku ll in a remarkable state of preservation, embedded in volcanic rock at Cappad ocia, Central Turkey. Cotswold Wildlife Park opens its doors at 10am every day (except Christ mas Day), with last admission at 4.30pm (3. 30pm in the winter months). A Good Read Sponsored by Devizes Books
Professor Stewart’s Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities Ian Stewart
......................................... Professor Ian Stewart is a mathematician and writes about maths, but please don’t stop reading here: this is definitely not the same maths you learned at school! In the Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities Professor Stewart manages the subtle balancing act of neither making his work too highbrow, nor too lowbrow. Those with a mathematical background will find much to enjoy but so will those whose abiding memory of school maths is counting the minutes until the end-of lesson bell. Yes he writes about complicated things but in his hands it all becomes understandable and even fun. Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities contains some 200 or so entries which cover all manner of mathematical conundrums with a bit of mathematical history thrown in. There are games, puzzles, card tricks and projects. Many of the entries will have you saying, ‘Oh yes I’ve heard of that .. . so that’s what it’s all about’. There are entries on the four-colour theorem, fractals, Fermat’s last theorem, magic squares, degrees of separation, space-filling curves, Fibonacci numbers, the Moebius band, chaos theory and much more ..

The book is designed to be read, and shared, in small bite-sized chunks. For a non-mathematician reading it all in one sitting might prove a bit relentless. It is the sharing aspect though, which makes this irresistible. You’ll just have to try out the number games and puzzles on members of your family and you won’t be able to stop yourself from sharing interesting facts such as, why the M25 is shorter anti-clockwise than clockwise, and by how much.
Harvesting Dreams: Hundertwasser for Kids Barbara Stieff
.......................................... You may never have heard of Friedensreich Hundertwasser but he was an eccentric artist, humanitarian, environmentalist and architect. He dedicated his life to the beautification of the world in which we live. In this colourful, quirky book Barbara Stieff introduces children to Hundertwasser’s free-thinking, inspirational approach to art and the environment. There is something about Hundertwasser’s vibrant, exciting work which appeals to children and adults alike. Most children enjoy colouring and love bright colours but often become bogged down with making things look ‘right’ rather than developing their own creative style. Likewise adults don’t always fully appreciate children’s imaginative artwork and gently admonish that cows are not pink with yellow stripes ... when of course there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t be any colour at all in a painting. Stieff ’s engaging and slightly off-the-wall style suits the book. She spent many years as an art educator at ZOOM, a children’s museum in Vienna and it shows. The book is packed with fun projects and suggestions for stretching children’s imaginations in an artistic but also in a more general way. It is also lavishly illustrated with Hundertwasser’s work which makes it a beautiful decorative item in its own right; a fact of which Hundertwasser would certainly have approved.

H
AVE YOU EVER LEFT A BUSINESS MEETING or function feeling none the wiser than when it started? Perhaps muttering, under your breath, what was all that about? That’s exactly what happened to me on a recent conference. The theme - information architecture in web design – sounded promising. And it started so well: efficient and professional management, a terrific venue and highly-qualified speakers who were clearly passionate about their work. But then it began. The jargon. Information ecosystems, relations between channels and touchpoints, enabling layers in pervasive systems. Wave upon wave of exotic lingo that clearly meant something to the speakers, but which I struggled to make any sense of. What did it all mean? How would any of it make me a better web designer? I left feeling disappointed. I was irritated that I had wasted all that time. To be honest, I felt a bit mortified too – why didn’t I understand it? Then, on the way back, I had a light-bulb moment. How those experts spoke to their audience was actually very similar to how many businesses talk to their customers. Let’s say your business sells widgets. You deal with widgets all day every day, and you talk to other people in the widget-selling industry. It’s understandable that

after a while, you develop a jargon all of your own – it’s a precise, convenient shorthand that helps speed things up. But the downside is that you need to adjust this when you talk to customers, and remember to switch back to plain English. Yet as a web designer, I know that so many businesses don’t do this. They forget that their customers aren’t experts. Their websites and promotional materials are full of technical specifications that customers nether understand nor care about. The subtle distinction between the 187-2A and 178 -2Z widgets may be of supreme importance to you, but your customer is more interested in whether either can be delivered by the weekend. And do you know one of the worst sectors for slipping into jargon? It’s my own – the web design industry. Web designers can’t help themselves. They learned all about php, HTML, jquery and Apache-based servers, and my goodness, they are going to tell you absolutely everything about it. Whether you’re interested or not. We plaster technical information over our own websites that could only be of interest to other web designers. We’re the monarchs of jargon, dropping in technical terms at every opportunity. We forget that other people are not IT gurus, and we consistently miss the glazed expressions. No wonder people avoid us at parties. Now, to some extent, if you’re dealing with the internet, a little bit of technical language is inevitable. A business agency has to engage with some of the main ideas and vocabulary. However, just like many other businesses, web agencies could do so much more to communicate technical ideas in plain English. It’s not difficult. They could talk clients through ideas, check that they understand, respond to their questions (however basic) without patronising or making them feel foolish. And in general, just spending a little more time with them. So as it turns out, I really did get something out of that conference. It reminded me of how frustrating it is to be bombarded with jargon. It made me think about how businesses ought to talk to customers. Above all, it left me determined to communicate as clearly as I can with my own clients, and to pass on how vitally important this message is for ALL businesses. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and interface with my kettle and make a cup of tea!

Red Balloon by Colin Viner
row of them just missing one by a foot or two. Within a few minutes we had a panoramic view of the whole of Bath, with Victoria Park and the Royal Crescent slipping slowly behind us. Apart from the occasional roar of the gas burner with a blast of intense heat and a distant murmur of traffic from below there was total silence.
I
N MY TIME I HAVE USED just about every form of transport except a helicopter, submarine or a balloon. However, one of those was accomplished about two and a half years ago when ‘R’ and I bought a Virgin Balloon trip from Groupon at a bargain price. We were given a year in which to book the flight but owing to other commitments took very near all of it before we booked a date. Unfortunately balloons have to have near perfect weather conditions before they can fly and we had 4 aborted flights before we managed to get airborne. Our last date was for the Monday the 17th of August at 17.30 with a weather check at 14.00 to see if the flight was on. Fortunately the weather for that day was for very light winds so at 16.30 we arrived at the launch site at Victoria Park Bath. Despite being frequent visitors to Bath neither of us had been to Victoria Park. It lies to the north of the city with the Royal Crescent to the north east of the park. As we were early we had a wander around the large park finding a rather magnificent children’s play area and plenty of open space for picnics and relaxation. 66
When we arrived back at the launch site the Virgin Balloon team had arrived and already had the basket and balloon laid out on the grass. Even un-inflated the balloon is huge as was the basket it was to carry. To begin with the basket is on its side attached to the flat balloon envelope one side and tethered to the team’s pickup truck on the other. After a safety and landing procedure briefing, the pilot asked for volunteers to hold open the neck of the balloon and manoeuvre two large petrol driven fans into position to complete the initial inflation, while the team wandered around inside the balloon connecting various ropes and wires. When the balloon was quite well inflated the pilot fired up the gas burners and completed the inflation, he then asked us and the other 14 passengers to climb aboard. With the balloon fully inflated and straining at the leash, the pilot cast off from the pickup truck and we gently floated into the air. There are trees surrounding Victoria Park and as we slowly gained height we drifted south towards a
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
I found that I was suffering from visual overload as I couldn’t take in everything I was seeing. I very soon realised that apart from the City Centre I know very little of the rest of Bath. There are so many parks and open spaces including a large sports field with purpose built cycle track. At about 3000 feet the pilot broke open the champagne. After about 40 minutes of flying we started to leave Bath behind and cross open country. Below we could see and hear farm machinery harvesting crops and to the right the town of Peasedown St John. We gently lost altitude until we were skimming across fields at tree top height. Soon the pilot found a stubble field to land in and we gently touched down, skidded a few feet and stopped. After we climbed off the pilot got us to walk over the balloon envelope to fully deflate it before getting us to fold it and cram it into a very large bag. Soon the rest of the team arrived to pack the balloon onto their trailer and transport us all back to Bath. The whole trip was completely fabulous and I wouldn’t hesitate to go on another. I think we travelled about 8 miles in the hour we were aloft and just to show how constant the wind was another balloon from Victoria Park landed in the same field as us, a few minutes later. You should all add a balloon flight to the list of 100 things to do before you die.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance In the centre, Chris Nourse of Freewheelers EVS and Richard Miller, Wiltshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Paramedic, holding the Credo blood box watched by (l-r) Dan Tucker, WAA paramedic, Joanne Munday WAA Critical Care Paramedic, George Lawrence, WAA Chief Pilot, Simon Whitelock, Freewheelers EVS, Fred Thompson, WAA paramedic, and Dr Ed Valentine, WAA base doctor.
Life Saving Blood on Wiltshire Air Ambulance by Jill Crooks, WAA Media Coordinator PRE-hospital blood transfusions can now be given to patients treated by Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Critical Care Paramedics. On August 17 2015 Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) began carrying blood on the helicopter and rapid response vehicle, which will benefit seriously ill and injured patients in need of emergency blood transfusion. The charity has teamed up with Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), based in Bristol, to fund the initiative. From August 17 2015 GWAAC began carrying blood on its helicopter. This means that the two air ambulances are the first in the south west of England to carry blood. WAA Critical Care Paramedic Richard Miller said: “Without doubt having blood on the helicopter will save lives. At the
68
very least, by giving blood to patients it will increase their blood volume and enable oxygen to get to their brain, heart and kidneys giving them a better chance of survival to enable us to get them to hospital for treatment. “Over the last four years Wiltshire Air Ambulance has moved rapidly into pre-hospital care by diagnosing, stabilising and treating critically injured patients on the roadside before they are taken to hospital. Having blood on the aircraft is another enhancement we can make in taking the emergency department to the patient.” Emergency blood transfusions are likely to be given to patients who suffer life-threatening bleeding caused by trauma and some acute medical conditions.
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
The blood is collected daily from the North Bristol Trust Transfusion Laboratory at Southmead Hospital and delivered daily to WAA’s Operations Centre in Devizes and GWAAC’s airbase in Filton by the charity Freewheelers EVS, which covers the south west. Additional deliveries can be made if required by the air crews. If the blood is not used, it will be returned to Southmead Hospital by the volunteer blood bikers after 24 hours. The blood storage boxes maintain the temperature of the blood within very narrow limits for well over 24 hours. Any unused blood units are therefore able to be put back into the Southmead Hospital blood bank, preventing waste. Melanie Rowbottom, a trustee of Freewheelers EVS, said: “Delivering blood supplies to air ambulances is a new venture for us and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Wiltshire Air
Ambulance and Great Western Air Ambulance. “We are excited to play our part in delivering a component of a service that could save many more lives, fully supported by the commitment of our members to make deliveries to the Air Ambulance bases 365 days a year.” South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust’s deputy clinical director, Adrian South, said: “SWASfT’s critical care specialist paramedics who work on the air ambulances receive additional training so they can bring even more clinical skills to the most seriously ill and injured patients. Along with critical care doctors, they are able to administer the blood. This new initiative to carry blood for transfusions on the two air ambulances will be of real benefit for patients in the south west.” The blood, two units of O negative, is stored in a Credo blood box, an insulated box that maintains the blood within a narrow temperature range preventing damage and spoilage. When blood is to be given to a patient it will be warmed from its cool storage temperature towards body temperature using a small portable device called a Belmont buddy lite Fluid Warmer. The Credo blood box containing the units of blood can be switched from the helicopters to the Rapid Response Vehicles (RRV) used by WAA and GWAAC Critical Care Paramedics, if needed.
Wiltshire Air Ambulance is available up to 19 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Charity’s new helicopter started operating on January 9th 2015 and is the first Bell 429 to operate as an air ambulance in the UK. It has a top speed of 156 knots (180 mph) making rapid response to any incident within the county achievable within minutes. The aircraft is fitted out with the most recent Aerolite equipment to meet the highest helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) specification. From January 2015 it will cost £2.5 million a year to keep the air ambulance flying, that’s £6,850 per day. Wiltshire Air Ambulance has been saving lives for 25 years – 2015 is its Silver Jubilee. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity which relies almost entirely on public donations to keep flying and does not receive central government funding. Purify my heart
A
young girl was pleading and pleading with her grandad, “Please grandad, can you do the frog impersonation?” “What do you mean the frog impersonation?” the grandad replied. “Please grandad, please do the frog impersonation?” she continued. Eventually the grandad asked, “I don’t understand, why is it you want me to impersonate a frog?” “Well grandad, daddy says that when you croak, we can all go to Disneyland.” Christianity isn’t just about a good inheritance after we croak. It’s about making life better in the here and now too. As someone once said, Christianity isn’t just pie in the sky when you die, but steak on your plate while you wait. Much of Jesus’ ministry was an invitation for people to see God (and His Kingdom) transforming the world around them. It involved keeping an eye on a heavenly future, and yet truly living in the present, so that heaven might break into our earthly reality. Very few people caught hold of this vision in the time of Jesus. The people that should have got it were the religious leaders of the day: the Scribes and Pharisees. Yet they were so threatened by Jesus, they turned their attention to criticizing Him and working out ways to catch Jesus out. They relished times when the letter of the Jewish Law wasn’t observed: hand washing, diet, sickness, dead bodies, Sabbath, blood, women… None of it was allowed for the pious believer. Yet, Jesus touched the leper, healed the haemorrhaging woman, raised the dead, healed on a Sabbath. Why? Because the heart of a person reveals who they are and what they believe more than outward appearances. In the summer, we went to catch up with family in Lancashire. They’ve had a tough time on the Fylde coast, as the water supply hasn’t been safe. Many people have gone down with tummy bugs because of the contaminated water. People up there have a choice, they can simply go on treating the symptoms and handing out prescriptions, or they can tackle the source and cause of the problem. Thankfully, water companies with the help of UV purification technology are (at time of press) getting to grips with the problem. For Jesus, the Jewish Law was a gift from God, but it was being used badly. It was helping people out with
70
The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2015
their symptoms and offering temporary forgiveness for this and that sin, but never dealing with the real contamination behind it all: a disobedient heart. The heart of the problem was the problem of the heart. If you want to know what’s inside your heart, just ask where does your mind wander off to when you daydream? The list of possible sins is endless… lust, greed, jealousy, anger, resentment, hatred, pride, you name it. People say, “Deep down, he’s a good fella”, but the reality is that most of us are good people externally, on the surface, but when you delve down beyond the façade, we are anything but good. When we gaze into our own hearts and are honest with ourselves, the contamination is plain to see. Thankfully though, God has done something about this. Jesus was sent to our world to deal with the source of impurity. Jesus’ forgiving work was completed on the Cross and by Jesus’ wounds we can all be healed. This addresses the contamination deep down in our hearts, rather than simply a symptom or two. Christians are offered the Holy Spirit to cleanse them daily, that their hearts may be purified, through God’s abundant grace. None of this can be achieved in our own strength, by following religious traditions, it must always be God working within us, from the inside out. Two builders were working on a site, one was younger than the other. He ribbed his older workmate daily about the fact that he wasn’t as strong as he used to be and that the younger man was fitter. Eventually, the older guy turned round and said, “Look let’s do a test to see who’s the strongest. Whatever I carry in my wheelbarrow, up to the end of the yard, you have to bring back.” The young man agreed, and so his older work mate said to him, “Great then, get into the wheelbarrow.” Spiritually speaking, we can’t carry ourselves. Jesus has to do it. Jesus is the one who forgives us and has guaranteed heaven, and more than that, Jesus is the one who, through the Holy Spirit, purifies our hearts and gives us grace to discover heaven on earth in the here and now.
