Quality Checkers now in Wiltshire! A team of people with learning difficulties turned detective last year to take part in a new project to check the quality of residential care homes providing support for other people with learning difficulties. For the team of Quality Checkers who took part it meant an opportunity for training, learn new life skills, and to take part in a project which is designed to improve services. For the two organisations involved, Healthwatch Wiltshire and Wiltshire People First, it meant an increase in the awareness and understanding of what it’s like for people with learning difficulties living in a Wiltshire care home and to test an inclusive approach to engagement and volunteering. The team of Wiltshire People 1st Quality Checkers visited 11 care homes and spoke to residents, empowering them to speak out about their experiences. On the whole they were impressed with what they saw and heard and produced informative reports which included recommendations for improvements after each visit. Wiltshire now has a team of trained Quality Checkers available who could be called upon to check the quality of other services. Healthwatch Wiltshire is encouraging services to make use of this valuable resource. A report which sums up the pilot project and the 11 individual visit reports are available on the Healthwatch Wiltshire website. An easy read summary and a description of the project is also available from Wiltshire People 1st. They are available in hard copy on request. Lucie Woodruff at Healthwatch Wiltshire said, “Healthwatch Wiltshire was approached by people with learning difficulties who wanted to volunteer with us. 12

Above: The team of Quality Checkers with Dr Sara Nelson from Healthwatch Wiltshire We were delighted to work with Wiltshire People First to test out a new approach which meant we could include people with learning difficulties in our important work. When we are assessing the quality of services we always ask the people who are actually using the service about their experience. This project enabled us to do this”. Angie Carmichael, Director of Wiltshire People 1st said: “We were very pleased to work with Healthwatch Wiltshire on this innovative project, developing the skills and confidence of our members, who as experts by experience were enabled to take on important roles checking out services and providing valuable feedback. We are keen to work with other agencies and expand the Quality Checking service further”. One of the Quality Checkers said “ I liked being part of this project, having the training to become a Quality Checker and doing a visit, it’s really helped me get new skills and understand things better…. it’s also been good to see what life is like for people living in homes too”. Business against Poverty has teamed up with Inspire – formerly Wessex Chambers of Commerce - to strengthen support for business growth within the region. Both organisations offer opportunities for businesses to meet through networking opportunities and high quality seminars, many of which are subsidised or offered free of charge. What sets this partnership apart is its focus on sustainable business Bill Huxley, director of BaP practice. Business against Poverty (BaP) is a business enterprise that drives: profitable, ethical and sustainable growth for the benefit of its members and society. Its memers come from across the south west and London and membership is growing rapidly. Its funds support the humanitarian work of the Wiltshire-based charity People against Poverty. Bill Huxley, director of BaP said: “As the economic climate evolves, businesses are increasingly required to demonstrate their focus on social purpose, corporate social responsibility and ethical practice. “This new relationship with Inspire shows this in action. Our accreditation kite-mark differentiates our members from their competitors; it says something significant about who they are and their business values.” Many businesses support a charity and as these decisions can be difficult, it often results in piecemeal support or no effective support at all. Business against Poverty is unique in leading the way as an ethical social enterprise for the UK business community. Through membership of Business against Poverty, members receive: • Ready-made corporate social responsibility statements which help companies align their values and aspirations with ethical business practice. • An accredited kite-mark which is the BaP logo which is becoming recognised as a symbol of trust and alignment with strong community values and support. • Investment in many poverty relief projects, run by BaP’s front-line charity People against Poverty, at home in Wiltshire and internationally in areas of extreme need. The future is also bright for Inspire and the local business community with substantial funds being injected from European sources in 2016. As part of this, local business strategies will be expected to contain an ethical policy and this is where Business against Poverty will be able to help. Elaine Harvey, head of client relationships at Inspire, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Business against Poverty to work with local businesses looking to grow and contribute to both the local and global economy. “There is so much support available, both ethical and practical. Inspire and BaP have a wealth of expertise on offer.” Expertise on marketing, accounting, strategy and legal advice is also available through the Inspire Team. Wiltshire Air Ambulance benefits from Marden Travel’s final year of touring After 30 years of providing tours, Wiltshire-based Marden Travel has bowed out and they and their customers raised more than £2,800 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). Owners Marion and Dennis Davies, of Calne, felt the time had come to take retirement and their final tour was in November 2015. The couple began operating their tour company in 1983 in Scotland. They moved to Wiltshire two years later where Marden Travel steadily grew. In 1999 they started a lasting arrangement with Pewsey Vale Coaches as their coach provider Over the years Marden Travel arranged hundreds of tours both in the UK and abroad. Many local clubs – Kennet U3A; Kennet Over 60s; Somerford’s Garden Club; Pewsey Vale DFAS; Dixon Travel Group; to mention but a few, as well as a large number of individuals from all over Wiltshire and other counties, have travelled as well. During their final year in 2015 Marion and Dennis raised money for WAA by asking customers to make a donation. The couple match funded the donations giving a grand total of £2,820.00. Marion and Dennis would like to thank all their customers for their donations and support, and feel 16
that the WAA is a very worthwhile cause that may affect all of us living in this area, and knowing such help is at hand if needed. Some of our customers have, already like us, joined as life members and others contribute to the lottery etc. and we hope to continue helping this valued organisation. Marion and Dennis became Life members of WAA’s Friends scheme in January 2015. Karen Gambrell, WAA Friends Manager, said: “We’re so grateful to Marion and Dennis Davies and their customers for raising funds for us. Their donation will help keep our helicopter flying and saving lives. “Friends of Wiltshire Air Ambulance help to secure the long-term future of the charity by providing a regular donation, which could be used to help purchase equipment or kit for the helicopter, provide additional training for our paramedics or simply fund essential items such as aviation fuel.”

WILTSHIRE WALKERS’ SAHARA SUCCESS EIGHT people who completed an adventure of a lifetime by trekking across the Sahara Desert have raised £12,143 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). The trekkers walked up to eight hours a day for a week in southern Morocco last October. Temperatures reached over 30 degree Celsius and the trekkers were led by local guides while camels carried their supplies. Valerie Whistler, a teacher at Haydon Wick Primary School, Swindon, and who lives at Coates near Cirencester, was one of the trekkers. Pupils and colleagues at her school helped her raise money for WAA. She said: “It was my first trek in Morocco and raising money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. It was a truly marvellous experience. It was well organised and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is absolutely fantastic.” Alex Moss, of Hilperton, Trowbridge, who took part with his partner Alex Thomsett, said: “It was an awesome experience and we did it with a good bunch of people and it was for a great cause. It was well organised and supported and it made fundraising fun. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is essential, anyone of us could need it if we suffer a medical emergency or accident.”
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2016
The Sahara Trek was organised by Adventurous Ewe and due to the success of it, WAA will be organising an overseas challenge in 2017. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA and who also took part in the Sahara Trek, said: “Trekking the Sahara was truly the experience of a lifetime. Camping out under the stars, climbing the dunes at dawn to watch the sun rise and singing with our Berber guides by the camp fire are all moments that will stay with me for a long time. “My fellow trekkers were fantastic company and a pleasure to spend time with. I’m so grateful to them for their commitment and efforts. Planning is already underway for our next overseas challenge in 2017 and I hope people will be inspired by our amazing Sahara trekkers to take part and help keep our helicopter and crew flying.” Photo: (l-r) James Young of Adventurous Ewe, Valerie Whistler of Coates near Cirencester, Katie Ahmed of Swindon, Luke Hosken of Trowbridge, Rebecca de la Bedoyere, WAA Senior Fundraising Manager, Nicola Earle of Malmesbury, Steph Orchard of Swindon, Alex Moss of Trowbridge and Steve Riddle, WAA Paramedic.

RAF Medic runs to raise money as a tribute to his baby son RAF Flight Sgt David Leatham, who has raised over £200,000 for charity, is planning his final long distance run in memory of his son Andrew who died from cot death.

Devizes business women celebrate first anniversary of new hair salon Kerry Gover, founder of Wiltshire-based gift retailer PinkBox Boutique, was one of five business women who came together to celebrate the first birthday of a Devizes’ hair salon on Saturday 30th January. Lucy's Hair Boutique, High Street, Devizes was founded by Lucy Croucher a year ago and she threw a party to celebrate. One of her founding customers was Kerry Gover, of PinkBox Boutique, based in Coate. Kerry said: “I’ve been a customer of Lucy’s for almost as long as she has been qualified and it’s been a real joy to see her develop her career and to then seen her open and run her own successful business. I was thrilled to be asked to join her event to celebrate her achievements.” “I’m so grateful to the clients and other business women who have supported Lucy’s Hair Boutique and made this first year so amazing,” Lucy said. Alongside Kerry, Lucy was joined by Taylor-Jane Hancock of fashion clothing store The Wardrobe and Abigail Wallen of So Simply Darling which offers handmade personalised gifts and homeware. Her colleague Heidi Stockhill, who works in the salon, also helped with demonstrations of hair styling on the night. Lucy's Hair Boutique can be found at 16 High Street, Devizes.

David Leatham (49), who lives with his family in Tilshead, near Devizes, has already won a Promise and Fulfillment Award from RAF Odiham for his services to charity. He’s been a medic in the RAF, serving in places such as Bosnia and Afghanistan, also a number of UK and overseas postings, for the last 33 years. His next – and final long distance challenge - will be a 65 mile run round the Isle of Wight in just 16 hours in April. The money he raises will go the Lullaby Trust which supports families who have lost babies and toddlers to SIDS or SUDC (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood). David has been raising money for the Lullaby Trust for many years as he and his first wife lost one of their four sons Andrew to cot death. “This is my drive and incentive to make sure other families don’t have to go through the same thing,” said David. Today he lives with his wife Barbara, a professional photographer, and they have two more children together nine-year-old James and Robyn aged eight. Barbara also has a grown up son Ryan. The couple met while both in the RAF, where Barbara was a photographer. “All our family is sporty,” says David, “that’s helped me keep fit for all the charity events I’ve done. I have played rugby with some of my sons and with two of them I completed their first half marathons with them and with my stepson his first step up to the full marathon. Barbara is a great support and is often at these events taking photographs!” The Isle of Wight Challenge takes place on 30 April. David attempted this grueling challenge two years ago but had to pull out at 50 miles as he hit the wall. “I felt like I’d let Andrew down by not finishing and I don’t like to be beaten. This course will also mark my retirement from long distance running as I will be 50 this year and leaving the RAF. “I will definitely continue to raise money for charity but after this one I will be looking to run shorter distances and be more team orientated.” To sponsor David and support the Lullaby Trust visit www.justgiving.com/ David-Leatham3. FREE Classes - Improve your English and Maths Skills by Alison Knight, teacher in Functional Skills English, Wiltshire College There’s nothing I like more than curling up with a good book and discovering new worlds. I find out what’s going on in the world every day through newspapers, and catch up on local news through magazines like The Town Crier. Our world is dominated by words – not just stories and news, but road signs, warnings, instructions and invitations. For some people, this is a problem. It was recently reported in The Times that up to 35% of school pupils are leaving school without adequate skills in English. Maths is just as bad. Many school leavers and adults struggle with basic addition and subtraction needed for daily life and job skills. Some may have learning or language difficulties; others might have lost interest in school and given up; family problems or illness can disrupt school attendance – there are all sorts of reasons. The lack of an English or Maths qualification can hold people back – in their personal as well as their working lives. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Free courses are available for adult learners at
when using English or Maths in dayto-day life or in work. If you, or someone you know would benefit from improving your English or Maths skills, the first step is to enrol. It’s never too late – the Wiltshire College tutors welcome students of all ages, whose common goal is to learn. Wiltshire College campuses across the county. Each course is designed for anyone who wants to improve their practical skills in English and Maths. English covers three main elements: reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Maths focuses on an extensive review of the skills needed both for work and everyday life. Classes are available during the day, or in the evenings, to suit busy lives.
With help and encouragement, many adult learners are developing skills and discovering a new confidence that can transform their whole lives. For more information, or to enrol on a Functional Skills English or Maths course at the Chippenham, Trowbridge, Salisbury, Devizes or Warminster campuses, contact Reception at Wiltshire College on 01249 350035 or enrol online at http://www.wiltshire.ac.uk/.
These are ideal courses for anyone looking to improve their job prospects. Students have also been able to use their new skills at home with activities such as helping their children with their English or Maths homework. These courses also help people to become more confident

Wiltshire Air Ambulance
A year of success! As a stand-alone air ambulance WAA has two highly trained paramedics on board, able to carry out surgical techniques on critically injured or ill patients by the roadside and to administer additional drugs for pain relief or sedation.
PATIENTS whose lives were saved by Wiltshire Air Ambulance have praised the service, as it marks the first year operating as a stand-alone air ambulance with a 10% increase in missions undertaken. Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) has been operating since 1990, but 2015 was the first year as a standalone air ambulance using its own new state-of-the-art helicopter, a Bell 429. For the previous 24 years WAA shared a helicopter with Wiltshire Police.
The largest number of call outs, 167, were to cardiac arrests, up from 139 in 2014. The number of Road Traffic Collisions was 145, up from 132 in 2014. Other missions included 56 sporting injuries, 35 falls, 24 horse riding injuries and 6 industrial incidents. WAA Critical Care Paramedics also gave pre-hospital blood transfusions to 10 patients since August, when it began carrying blood on board the helicopter and Rapid Response Vehicle (car). WAA conveyed 145 patients to hospital and treated another 195 patients on scene. The speed of the Bell 429 and expertise of the air ambulance crew also proved lifesaving for Adam Gibbs, 17, of Pewsham, Chippenham. He went to Chippenham Hospital’s Minor Injury Unit after he injured his abdomen while riding his bicycle on 16 June 2015. Concerned staff called WAA and the paramedics suspected internal bleeding. Adam was stabilised and flown to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, in 12 minutes. He 28

Adam Gibbs underwent surgery on a ruptured spleen soon after his arrival. He was discharged after six days and was able to attend his end of year prom at Abbeyfield School, Chippenham, 10 days later. His mum, Pippa Gibbs, said: “Adam’s condition was life threatening. He was deteriorating while the air ambulance was carrying him. As a family we are beyond grateful. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a brilliant service, we are so thankful to have it. Adam is fully recovered and enjoying life. He passes on his thanks as he is now able to attend Wiltshire College studying Level 3 games development and working part-time at Wetherspoons in Chippenham.”
David Philpott, Chief Executive of WAA, said: “All of us in the charity team, the aircrew and our volunteers are proud to provide an essential helicopter emergency service for people living, working and travelling through Wiltshire and surrounding counties. “The Bell 429 is a modern and faster helicopter and we are pleased with how it has performed. It goes without saying that we can only provide an air ambulance service because of the generosity of the public, businesses and grant making trusts, who raise funds for us day in and day out. On behalf of everyone at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, thank you for your continued support.” Wiltshire Air Ambulance is available up to 19 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Chris Watkins Media.
From when the charity began using the Bell 429 helicopter on 9 January 2015 to 8 January 2016, WAA was called out to 537 incidents, an increase of 51 on the year January to December 2014.
Wiltshire remains the only air ambulance in the UK to use a Bell 429 helicopter. The state-of-theart helicopter is faster than the previous helicopters WAA has used, enabling a rapid response to incidents within minutes. The Charity leases the Bell 429 from Heli Charter.

Health Matters
Eggs are Excellent!
H
by Emmy Butcher
ASN’T it been a funny Eastertide? It seems that Spring has been trying to poke it’s tiny little head up since early January, but the rain, wind and frost have had other ideas meaning that we lost a significant number of our lovely daffodils, blossom and crocuses to the elements before we even got to March. Never mind, Mother Nature always finds a way and there is still a lot of colour about to keep our spirits up. Every Easter I arrange an egg hunt in the garden for my children. As they’re getting older, they are steadily losing interest and I find myself recruiting younger children belonging to friends and family to come along to make it worthwhile. You see, dear Reader, the thing is I quite enjoy bouncing around the garden on Easter morning, with my Easter bonnet, hiding the eggs in the trees and the bushes and decorating the grass with brightly coloured foil treats. I know I look a loon, but its tradition and an excuse to eat the ones that get left behind. I do so hate seeing an unfound chocolate egg nestling in a high place in the garden, just out of reach of any children. It’s only polite to tidy these away (into my mouth) once the children have lost interest. It will be no surprise to you that one of my favourite things about Easter is the food. I appreciate that chocolate eggs should be enjoyed in moderation, but when it comes to a freshly laid egg I go weak at the knees at the thought. I do so love a nice big egg, be it dippy or scrambled, fried or poached, hard boiled or devilled. It’s one of life’s joys and you can’t beat a good yellow yoke. In the past, eggs, and in particular the yellowy yokes, have had a bit of a bad press. Health experts had us believe that the yoke of an egg was so full of cholesterol that if you ate too many it would raise cholesterol in the blood and contribute to heart disease. This is now no longer true and actually eggs are much lower in cholesterol than they were ten years ago. This reduction seems to have been attributed to the changes in hen feed since the BSE crisis in the 1990s. In fact, instead of being a health risk they are now considered a healthy food and should be eaten as part of a balanced diet. Indeed, eggs have lots of health benefits. For example they can help you to protect your eyes, being full of antioxidants that reduce the risk of diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Eggs are regarded as a ‘complete’ source of
44
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2016
protein as they contain all eight essential amino acids; these are ones we have to obtain from our diet as we cannot naturally produce them in our bodies. During pregnancy it is perfectly safe to eat eggs, as long as they are thoroughly cooked, (bad news if you like a dippy egg). In fact, during pregnancy and breast feeding, Mums can pass on the health benefits of eggs to their children as they contain choline which is essential for normal brain development. The healthier your egg, the better the health benefits - so it’s best to buy Omega 3 enriched eggs or free range eggs. Unless you eat a lot of eggs (over three a day) or have diabetes, reducing your daily intake is not likely to have a significant effect on reducing your cholesterol levels. Many different factors can contribute to high cholesterol, a fatty substance which is carried around the body by proteins. Too much cholesterol will cause this fatty material to build up in your artery walls and is a major risk to your health, causing problems such as stroke and heart disease. All the usual suspects such as an unhealthy diet, smoking and lack of exercise are contributors but having an underlying condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes are also factors. You won’t be surprised to hear that the total amount of saturated fat in our diets is the biggest contributor, which means you’re more likely to get high cholesterol from eating too many Easter eggs, than scrambled eggs. Not all cholesterol is bad for you. Good cholesterol – high density lipoprotein

HDL can be found in unsaturated fats, contained in foods such as oily fish, avocados, nuts and olive oil. The British Heart Foundation, www.bhf.org. uk, have lots of information on how to reduce your cholesterol levels and what to do if you are at risk of high cholesterol through familial hypercholesterolaemia, which is a genetic condition or have an underactive thyroid. NHS Choices www. nhs.uk have great advice about how to improve your overall health to prevent high cholesterol. Or alternatively, you could engage the free services of your local health trainer to help you reach your health goals by calling 0300 0034566 or e-mailing health.trainers@wiltshire.gov.uk. Whatever your plans are, I wish you a Cracking Easter from us all here at Beversbrook Medical Centre. I’m going to be wearing my bonnet on Easter Sunday, enjoying eggs of all kinds (in moderation) and of course the odd hot cross bun for good measure. I’ll need to keep my strength up for the egg hunt – being a bunny is tiring work! Emmy Butcher Practice Manager, Beversbrook Medical Centre, Calne emmybutcher@nhs.net

Spring Clean
Organise Your Life by Debbie Singh-Bhatti
Some people seem to be born more organised than the rest of us, but we can all develop habits that will make for a more organised and productive life. Here are five to consider. Write Things Down Don’t try to remember everything. From shopping lists or ideas for home decor, to important family or business dates, or goals you’d like to achieve - write them down! Do It Now The longer you wait to do something, the more difficult it will become. Putting in the effort to get things done as soon as possible will make your life less stressful and less demanding.
46
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2016
Give Everything a Home Knowing where to find a thing saves time and frustration. Decide where things belong, label the space if necessary but NEVER designate a storage space as “miscellaneous!” Get Rid of Clutter Schedule regular clear outs to go through the items in your inbox, cupboards or drawers. Only keep things you really need and use, which will clear the way for greater creativity and productivity. Delegate Responsibilities Whether at home or work, delegate as much as you can. Organised people know how to share the load. No person can do everything, but everyone can do something. This is a great way to help others grow and develop too.

losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.
But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hardprune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past.
Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.
Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from
Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing.
Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you ... Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an
8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

Buddy’s, Sherston, nr Malmesbury, Wiltshire
I set up Buddys last year as I have been feeding my own dogs raw food for a number of years. I adore dogs and belong to a rescue organisation called German Shepherd Rescue Elite, as a result I have a few rescue canines myself. One German Shepherd I adopted came from Ireland, he was only 18 months old but had been used as a guard dog. He was utterly useless as he is just a ball of soppy fluff. They chained and beat him to try and make him vicious. When he got to me Buddy was only 24kg, and he is supposed to be a big dog. His coat was manky, and you could see his ribs even though he is a semi long haired dog. Using my raw food recipes he put on weight (40kg) and now looks a picture of health. That is when I set up Buddy’s Raw Dog Food. My website has information about why owners should change their dog’s food. All my products are locally sourced, from farmers, abattoirs and butchers. Books
A Good Read The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
.............................................................................................. Growing up in a typical English town this novel made a huge impact on me when I first read it. The colourful characters seem such a world apart from what I was familiar with and yet it is a story about all of our lives and a woman’s relationship with her mother. In 1949 four Chinese immigrant women in San Francisco agree to meet up each week to play mah-jong, calling themselves the Joy Luck Club. Here they discuss the lives they left behind in China and the dreams and hopes they have for their daughters as they embark on their new lives in America. Whilst not strictly speaking short stories, each chapter tells a different aspect of their lives. The first half of the book tells of the lives of the women in the Joy Luck Club. We learn of their lives in China. An-Mei Hsu whose mother left her to become a concubine to a rich merchant and Lindo Jeng who was forced to marry someone she didn’t love. We then learn of their daughters and their new lives growing up in America, in a culture that seems alien to the world their mothers are describing. Here lies the clash of cultures which leads to friction between mother and daughter. The older generation feel as if they are losing their daughters to American culture and the younger generation do not feel as if anything their mothers talk about is relevant to their lives. Sound familiar? You don’t need to be a Chinese immigrant or growing up in America to relate to the universal themes that Tan weaves into her debut novel. It is about learning to understand the people that fill our lives and accepting that they only have our best interests at heart. It is about learning that our parents too are real people, arriving in the present through a series of events that have shaped them and made us who we are too.

Emily Feather and the Enchanted Door by Holly Webb
............................................................................................... Have you ever felt as if you just don’t fit in? Where even your own family seems different to you? This is how ten-year-old Emily Feather feels. She looks different to her siblings with her dark hair. It is true that everyone looks a bit different (even her older twin sisters aren’t identical) but Emily just can’t shake the feeling that there is something about her that sets her apart from the rest of the family. Her best friend Rachel points out that she is the only one not named after a bird, but surely there is more to it than that? Emily lives in an unusual house. Her dad, Ash, is an author, writing fantasy books. The house seems as if it could have come straight out of one of his books. Her room is in the old attic at the top of a rickety flight of stairs, with ornately carved mirrors on the landing. Sometimes it even feels as if the walls have moved: but that would be silly as Emily knows that can’t happen. One day she is passing one of the mirrors and sees a strange reflection in it. A girl with green skin is staring back at her and that is just the start of a series of events that will completely change Emily’s life. It turns out that she was right. She IS different from the rest of her family, but not in any way she could have possibly imagined. Holly Webb is better known for her novels books about animals and has written over 90 books for children. However this book, the first in a new magical series, shows that she is just as adept at writing about fantasy worlds. Aimed at readers aged 8+ this is a lovely introduction to traditional fairy mythology. It does take a while to get going and the titular enchanted door doesn’t appear until the final quarter of the book. This is clearly intended to introduce the reader to Emily’s world which is then explored in future books.

Oh for the arms of Morpheus!
F
OR those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, Morpheus is said to be (I think) some Greek God of sleep who’s arms gently hold you and lull you off into the land of Nod! In other words, I am knackered! Who amongst you has been wakened or kept awake by the sound of snoring? You’ll know what I’m talking about then. My dad used to rattle the walls, but as my mother did too, they never woke each other up – only me, and neither would admit to nocturnal noise making.
mumbling from beneath the duvet. All I could make out were the words, “Bloody noisy sod!” I didn’t have to ask what he was talking about – the door to Jay’s room was half open – as were the windows, and I could hear him sucking the sides of the tent in from the landing ! Silently I crept back to bed, trying to locate the patch of the mattress I had previously warmed. There are two other snorers in this house and on average, I think they are on a par with each other!
Although a dig in the ribs sometimes shuts him up, the relief is mainly temporary. He turns on his back, and with mouth agape, imitates a motorbike at full throttle.
Alas, the same couldn’t be said for our youngest son, Jason. While his brother Andy never made a sound, the same couldn’t be said of Jay.
In the middle of the night, we were rudely jerked awake by the crashing of the back door, followed by footsteps stamping loudly up the stairs, and a great deal of muttering and swearing ! Staring bleary eyed at the clock, we saw it was half past four and still quite dark beyond the bedroom curtains. Dragging myself out of my side of the bed, I stumbled into Andy’s bedroom, to be greeted by angry 62
With her “master” (Who am I kidding), it’s a different kettle of fish – or should I say a different sound altogether! Many are the nights I have woken suddenly wondering what the hell I’m doing sleeping on the main runway of Heathrow with Jumbo jets taking off and landing a few feet away.
Then, when I got married, although I was fully expecting my new spouse to shake the roof, happily for me he slept soundly and silently. Bliss !
When they were about ten and twelve approximately, they borrowed a tent from our then next door neighbour as they were heavily into Enid Blyton, and thought it would be great fun to sleep- in the back garden, even having their supper in the tent. Bad move, ( for Fred and me at any rate !!!)
paces up and down, lies by the door, and if I leave the room too to visit the loo, she actually cries till I’m back downstairs. When Fred comes back, she eats him alive, her little stump of a tail wagging so furiously that it’s a blur. He adores her too, as do I. Whenever I’m in hospital, she has to sleep on my side of the bed with her head on my pillow! The rest of the time, once normal service has been resumed, she sleeps in her bed in the kitchen quite happily.
One is the dog. An ageing, sadly evercreaky rescue Jack Russell, whom we love to bits, but boy, can she “drive ‘em home?” When we go away for a few days in our motor home, she sleeps on the foot of our bed, and halfway through the night, off she goes, like a rusty chain saw! As if that’s not bad enough, this is followed by a low rumbling sound one can only describe as an earthquake! In the summer, (O ha ha! What’s that?) we daren’t sleep with the windows open even a minute crack, else the folk in neighbouring vans would be rudely woken! We cannot put her in kennels as she suffers from what the vet calls “separation anxiety”, which roughly means she worships Fred so much that whenever he’s out of sight, she

Then there’s the restless legs. I get a sharp kick on the ankle as he “rides a unicycle”, or runs a race – or even does gymnastics in his sleep. He mutters under his breath too, usually culminating in some sort of yell as whatever he’s dreaming about scares the pants off him. (I keep telling him to stop watching creepy or horror flicks before he comes to bed, but to no avail! I thought of buying him one of those anti-snoring pillows they advertise, and if that didn’t work – I could always shove it in his mouth! Of course, like most men, he denies he snores and tells me it’s me who makes grunting sounds in my sleep! SLEEP? Chance would be a fine thing!!! …… Joanne Deacon @ 2016 ……
