Wiltshire Air Ambulance lands at New Airbase for first time
WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance carried out its first landing on the helipad at the charity’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham on Tuesday 20 March. This exciting milestone was followed by the official handover of the airbase to Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The building will now be fitted out before the charity’s fundraising, administrative and operational teams move in by this summer. David Philpott, Chief Executive of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Today has been a significant day in the history of Wiltshire Air Ambulance with the handover of our new airbase. We are now in the final phase of the building work as we undertake the fitting and equipping of it before it becomes operational. Our primary contractors, Rigg Construction (Southern) Limited, and our architects and project managers, CMS, have ensured that our new home has the best possible facilities for our helicopter, our pilots, paramedics and our charity team to enable us to continue to save lives in the future. “We have received amazing support from people for our new airbase, including donations, and we’d like to thank everyone for their backing.” Currently the charity leases offices in Calne for its fundraising and administrative team and leases the hangar at Wiltshire Police headquarters in Devizes for its helicopter and aircrew. The new airbase has a Flight and Operations Centre for its aircrew, a hangar for the helicopter and medical equipment, offices for the charity team, training suite and a visitors’ viewpoint. 6
The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2018
Kevin Reed, Head of Facilities and Security at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, has led the new airbase project on behalf of the charity and said the site at Semington was chosen after an exhaustive search. He said: “When we became a stand-alone air ambulance three years ago our aspiration was to find a location to build the best possible airbase to bring together our charity and operational teams and to have full control over our future. The site at Semington is ideal because it is centrally located and will allow our helicopter to reach all parts of Wiltshire within 11 minutes. In addition, as there is no ambulance station in Melksham our paramedics with their critical care skills will provide enhanced medical cover for the area for emergencies such as road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests and strokes.” The fly in and handover of the new airbase took place a few days after Wiltshire Air Ambulance marked its 28th anniversary. During that time its highly trained aircrew have undertaken thousands of missions and saved countless lives. Above: At the official handover of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase at Semington are (front left) Chris Lear, Chairman of Trustees at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, and Jon Price, Commercial Director of Rigg Construction (Southern) Limited, watched by staff and aircrew from Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Rigg Construction and CMS Architects. COMMUNITY NEWS
The 2018 Chippenham BID Business Awards On Thursday 22nd February the Neeld Community and Arts Centre in Chippenham came alive with the brightest stars of local business for the Chippenham Business Awards 2018. The event, organised by Chippenham BID and title sponsors Awdry Bailey and Douglas, recognised the efforts and successes of businesses in and around Chippenham from a wide range of industries. The Chippenham Business Awards was sponsored by several local businesses including Berkley Square Private Clients Ltd., 24-7 Staffing, The Angel Hotel, Avagio IT, Naturally Social, Platinum Mortgage Solutions and Wiltshire College. The organisations came together to recognise the efforts made by their peers and colleagues across the town and celebrate local businesses and businesspeople whose hard work, dedication and innovation make up Chippenham’s thriving industry. Tom Paget of Awdry Bailey & Douglas said, “We would like to say well done to all of the finalists this year who were all worthy of an award but we must of course congratulate the winners and in particular The Garden as deserving winners of Chippenham Business of the Year. We had a fantastic evening celebrating with everyone there and would like to thank Chippenham BID for putting on such a great event which we are proud to support.” The evening was hosted by special guest Marc Allum, a self-confessed “collectaholic” and regular specialist on the Antiques Roadshow whose easy humour and infectious enthusiasm was the perfect accompaniment to the evening’s ceremonies. The Awards couldn’t have come at a better time for The Garden, who celebrated their third birthday just 2 days later and a year since reopening after a devastating fire closed the business. The 8

determination to provide the highest standards and friendliest service by John Paine and his team alongside fantastic feedback from customers of The Garden combined to create an outstanding entry to the Chippenham Business Awards. John posted on The Garden’s Facebook page, “So happy to receive these accolades at the Chippenham business awards last night. I just want to say a big thank you to all of the staff at The Garden for making the business such a success and especially to Marge, Phil, Jay and Gemma who have been on the rollercoaster with me since before the fire.” Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham BID said, “The Chippenham Business Awards offer local businesses the opportunity to reflect on their achievements and be recognised in the community for the hard work they put into their companies. It was wonderful to work with such a wide range of sponsors on this event and to be able to celebrate with the winners. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!”
The winners of the evening were: Apprentice of the Year: Ben Lisseman of Digiprint Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Cheryl Klukowski Stevenson of Taste of the Caribbean and Chocolate Blonde Professional Services Provider of the Year: Goughs Solicitors Hotel, Restaurant or Café of the Year: The Garden Chippenham Creative or Technology Business of the Year: City Dressing Customer Service Award: Bewley & Merrett Funeral Directors Start-Up Business of the Year: Maria Christina Bridal Boutique Small Business of the Year: Huw Thomas Commercial Independent Business of the Year: J. WIN a copy of ‘A Step Too Far’
by local author, Ruth Skrine Dr Ruth Skrine was born in Chippenham, the elder daughter of Drs Eric and Joan Hickson. She worked in General Practice, Family Planning, and Psychosexual Medicine, before retiring to concentrate on writing. She started writing by accident. When she offered to help with the new journal of Family Planning, by sticking on stamps, she found her name on the first edition as joint editor. Since then she has editing several medical books and her mother’s wartime diaries. Her own book on Psychosexual Medicine and her memoir Growing into Medicine have also been published. Her most recent novel A Step Too Far opens with a party of birdwatchers in Bhutan. The book has been described as part-thriller and part characterdriven drama. When the group returns to London their relationships change as they fight with increasing vigour to raise awareness of the growing dangers to the environment. Reviewers have described the book as a pageturner with an intelligent plot and unusual and charismatic characters. It is available from Amazon, on Kindle and can be ordered from bookshops. Ruth’s next novel The Knotted House will be published in the spring.
WIN A SIGNED COPY OF "A STEP TOO FAR" Ruth has kindly donated one signed copy of A Step Too Far which you could win by sending your name and a contact telephone number by email to: production@towncriermagazine.com by 30th April 2018. The Editor’s decision is final. 10

Would your group like to hear about the inspirational work of a hearing dog? Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a national charity focused on the training of assistance dogs, are looking for clubs, groups & organisations in the Royal Wootton Bassett area to invite a speaker from the charity, to talk about the amazing work this organisation does in your local community. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train dogs to alert deaf recipients to sounds they would otherwise miss. Sounds as simple as the doorbell, an alarm clock or the fire alarm can be taken for granted. On top of this practical assistance the dogs also provide huge emotional support. “This totally amazing, loyal, clever dog has completely transformed my life. Not only by alerting me to the vital sounds I can no longer hear, but by building a bridge between me and people who have hearing.” Steve Taylor and Hearing Dog Echo Giving talks is a fantastic way for the charity to raise awareness, as well as raising vital funds and finding new volunteers. As Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is not government funded and relies solely on donations, speaking to groups in the community is a valuable way for them to generate support. Community Fundraising Manager for South West & South Wales, Lauren Maher, says: “By having our volunteer speakers visit local groups and organisations, we can spread the word and raise awareness about what a difference our dogs make. In some cases our speakers are recipients themselves and have very powerful stories to tell” If you would like to find out more about Hearing Dogs for Deaf People or request a speaker, please email Linda Buckland, Purton, volunteer speaker, linda.buckland@wrcplc.co.uk or visit our website www.hearingdogs.org.uk and request a speaker online.

DAYS OUT IN NORTH WILTSHIRE
Spring days out in North Wiltshire We have chosen some of the most educational, entertaining and environmentallyfriendly visitor attractions for you to try this April and May. WEST WOODS West Woods near Marlborough is famed for spectacular carpets of Bluebells in late Spring. A floral display of dark blue contrasts with bright-green Beech tree leaves. A good network of trails, including an easy access walking route, wends through this natural wonder.
CHIPPENHAM MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTRE Saxon King Alfred the Great and world-renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel are two amazing men with surprising links to Chippenham – and you can discover their stories and lots more at the town’s museum and heritage centre. In Chippenham Market Place, this active and friendly community museum is housed in an 18th century townhouse and tells how the town developed from its prehistoric origins to the present day – through its connections to the river, road and rail networks. Regularly changing displays feature in their temporary exhibition gallery or you can take part in a varied programme of walks, talks, children’s activities and special events. There are creative family workshops for accompanied children aged 6-11. On Tuesday 3 & Thursday 10 April it’s ‘Willow & Tissue Paper 2D Arts’, and the following week ‘Printing Fun’. Sessions run 10.30am & 1pm and cost £4 per child, booking essential. Free museum entry, open Monday- Saturday, 10am-4pm. www.chippenham.gov.uk/chippenham-museumheritage-centre/ 14

Marlborough and District Lions Club have Forestry Commission (FC) permission to open the woods to motor vehicles on two Sundays a year. So, on two of these three dates – 29th April, 6th May and/ or 13th May – to be confirmed nearer the time, anyone with walking difficulties can explore too! Club members take charity donations and provide refreshments with all money distributed locally. Gates open 10am and close 6pm. Walkers can visit at any time. West Woods is over 1,000 acres of beautiful Beech plantation on a former ancient woodland site. FC is also reintroducing native broadleaf species such as Oak at Collingbourne Woods to improve biodiversity to Savernake Forest standards. Parking, picnic tables, BBQ sites, mountain bike trails, and toilets are available at some sites. www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/ englandwiltshiremarlboroughwoodlandswestwoods

MALMESBURY ABBEY & ATHELSTAN MUSEUM Since the 6th century re-emergence of Christianity, Malmesbury has been first in England’s history: possibly its capital; and home to the Saint of Wessex, king of England, man to fly, and the fathers of both modern English history and English philosophy! The 12th century Abbey houses the tomb of King Athelstan The Glorious, the crest of Henry VII, a speciallyilluminated 15th century Bible, a breathtaking Norman stone porch, and the grave of a local girl killed by a tiger in 1703! While abbey admission is free, visitor donations of £5-£10, and using the tearoom and shop, are much appreciated! Normal opening times are 9am-5pm. Nearby, Athelstan Museum explains Malmesbury’s history, using artefacts, ever-changing exhibitions, and interactive items for children. Long Stay parking is best just a five-minute walk away, but to avoid 63 Abbey Steps, try the Town Centre Short Stay (two hours only Monday-Saturday, but free on Sunday). www.malmesburyabbey.com

AVEBURY RINGS, MANOR HOUSE & KEILLER MUSEUM Part of a World Heritage Site with nearby Stonehenge, Avebury Rings combine a Neolithic (c. 2,500 BC) religious site with a quintessential English manor village. Avebury Rings – a large outer ring of 98 standing stones around the village, and two smaller rings inside with 83 stones – offer a fascinating one-mile walk. Managed by the National Trust (NT) and English Heritage and open year-round, admission to the stones, and a Saxon church, is free. Avebury Manor is a uniquely engaging stately home because visitors, especially children, can touch everything! Each of nine rooms reflects a different time, from 16th century Tudor to the 1930s. In the courtyard, the Alexander Keiller Museum displays artefacts that the wealthy marmalade magnate and passionate archaeologist discovered, when he bought Avebury to restore the monuments. Manor tickets are around £10 adult, £5 child & £15 family; the museum around £5/£3/£15; and NT parking is £7 all day. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury

ATWELL WILSON MOTOR MUSEUM One of Calne’s hidden gems, the Atwell Wilson Motor Museum is a “must see” for anyone with an interest in motoring history. The majority of its 100+ exhibits are cars from the 1920s onwards. However, there is also a collection of motorcycles, a huge amount of motoring memorabilia, the Jack Spittle Model Lorry Collection and as shown, a reconstructed 1930’s style garage complete with vehicles. Above all, it’s run entirely by some very friendly volunteers, who will do their absolute best to ensure you enjoy your visit. For more information, take a look at the Museum’s website: www.atwellwwilson.org.uk

WADWORTH BREWERY TOUR & VISITOR CENTRE In the heart of Devizes is Wadworth’s Victorian brewery and modern visitor centre. In the community for over 140 years, they now offer fun, interesting tours explaining their colourful history and heritage. After a climb up the traditional Victorian tower brewery, tours work their way down through four floors, moving forward through time. In complete contrast to the tower, a 21st century copper house shows how brewing technology has developed. Visitors also see an on-site studio, where artists create unique hand-painted pub signs.
BARTON FARM COUNTRY PARK & BRADFORD-ON-AVON TITHE BARN This country park is 36 acres of delightful countryside for walking, nature study, rowing, fishing, or just picnicking around the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal. Picnic areas and some paths are closely cut for leisure, while many wildlife-rich areas are managed to encourage plants, small animals, birds and insects. There are also historic buildings, especially a 14th century monastic tithebarn – with an amazing timber cruck roof – near the park entrance, and a packhorse bridge spanning the river.
Then to the stables to see Wadworth’s most famous residents – working Shire Horses Max, Sam and Archie. Finally, it’s to The Harness Room Bar for a tutored sampling session of handcrafted ales! Tours last around 2-2½ hours, run daily at 11am and 2pm Monday to Saturday (closed on Bank Holidays), and it’s best to book in advance. Prices start from £6 child (12+), £10 concession, and £12 adult. www.wadworth.co.uk/more/brewery-tours/ visiting-our-brewery/
A pleasant 45-minute walk – either along the canal towpath or river banks and through the meadows – goes from the park entrance to Avoncliff. Owned by Wiltshire Council and managed jointly with Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon, the park is free and open daily. Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust open the tithebarn 10.30am-4pm only. Off the B3109 near the town centre, there is council car parking and at the railway station. www.wiltshire.gov.uk/countryparks?cp=CP_ BART&ac=show
POUND ARTS CENTRE North Wiltshire’s arts hub, this centre in Corsham offers performances, workshops, a youth theatre, and exhibitions for anyone to experience. For children in the Easter holidays, there’s a Natural Beasts workshop – an intriguing morning of story-telling, fact-finding, making, creating and imagineering – on Wednesday April 11th from 10.30am-12.30pm for just £2! Pound also excels at live theatre. On Friday April 13th at 8pm, comedian ‘Podfather’ (the Guardian) and star of Radio 4’s Relativity, Richard Herring, presents ‘Oh Frig, I’m 50!’ On Saturday April 14th at 7.30pm, Lady Carnarvon (pictured) is ‘At Home At Highclere’ – now synonymous with ‘Downton Abbey’ – sharing its 150-year history. On Saturday April 28th at 8pm, Podcast host and ‘expert stand-up’ (Times), Stuart Goldsmith presents ‘Like I Mean It’, his ‘best-ever show’. A full programme of latest film releases shows in the Pound’s cinema on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and you can take in food/drink from their cafe bar. www.poundarts.org.uk

Half the proceeds will go to Julia’s House Children’s Hospice and half to other local charities. Liz Froud, Community Fundraiser at Julia’s House said ‘We are delighted to be a chosen charity by Calne Rotarians. Julia’s House provides practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting condition and earlier this year we opened the first children’s hospice in Wiltshire. We rely on local community support to fund our hospice, so we are very grateful for all support. We would like to thank everyone involved and wish them a safe journey’. Swing Birds
Sunday 13th May sees the fourth annual outing for Swindon’s only all-female big band – Swing Birds. This year, due to popular demand, they are migrating to the Wyvern Theatre, in Swindon, to allow even more music lovers to flock to the spectacle that is “Swing Birds and Roundabouts”. As well as tried and tested big band classics, Swing Birds also feature exceptional arrangements by talented local musicians. Blues and wartime-era swing are blended effortlessly with current hits from the likes of Taylor Swift, many featuring their fabulous vocalists. What will they surprise the audience with this time?! Our special guest will, once again, be the immensely talented drummer, Crissy Lee. Crissy has been drumming all her life and is widely acclaimed as being Europe’s finest female drummer. A distinguished career has seen her travel the globe, appearing on numerous TV shows and sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest celebrities, even touring with the Beatles. Swing Birds are delighted to be supporting Swindon Cares at this event, to help raise money for The Nelson Trust and Swindon Women's Aid via a collection on the night. So come and experience the joy of live music, delivered as only Swing Birds can – with style, panache and more than a little humour!

RECIPE
Hot Cross Buns Home made hot cross buns are heavenly
METHOD To make the dough: Heat the milk in a pan until hot but not boiling. Remove from the heat. Add the butter stir until melted. When the liquid has cooled to tepid, beat in the egg and half the orange zest. Mix the strong flour, yeast, 1/2-1 tsp salt (depending on taste) and the sugar in a large bowl. Pour in the liquid and stir to make a soft dough. Knead the dough for 5-10 mins on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. (you can use a mixer with a dough attachment if you have one). Oil a large bowl and place the kneaded dough inside it, then cover with oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place for about 1 hr or until the dough has doubled in size. Place the raisins and half the orange juice in a small pan and simmer gently for a few minutes. Allow to cool completely. Mix the cinnamon with 2 tbsp sugar and the remaining zest. Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and press it out to a large rectangle, a little bigger than A4 paper size. Scatter it evenly with the drained raisins, and cinnamon-sugar mix. Roll the dough around the filling, then knead it well for a few mins until the fruit and spices are evenly spread. Grease and line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a bun making the top as smooth as possible. Place the buns, smooth-side up, on the baking sheet, leaving room for rising. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place for 30-45 mins or until the dough has risen and doesn’t spring back quickly when prodded gently. Meanwhile preheat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Make the paste for the crosses by gradually stirring 6-7 tbsp water into the plain flour to make a smooth, thick paste, then put in an icing bag or small plastic food bag then snip off the corner to about 5mm. Pipe the crosses, then bake for 20-25 mins until the buns are risen and dark golden brown. Mix the remaining orange juice with the remaining sugar and let it dissolve. Brush the syrup over the buns while they are still hot, then leave to cool. Eat on the day of baking or serve toasted the next day. 48

Confused about What to Eat?
D
ID you know that it’s Allergy Awareness Week between April 23 to April 29 this year when Allergy UK works hard to continue to raise awareness around allergies. An allergy is a response of the body’s immune system to a normally harmless substance. The most common are pollen, food and household dust mite. The body sees them as a threat and rushes to protect itself from them. The most common symptoms – which will often occur within seconds or minutes – are sneezing, wheezing, shortness of breath, runny nose, rash or hives, itchy eyes, lips or throat, swelling of various parts of the body and sickness and diarrhoa. Evidence shows allergies are increasing worldwide with 30 to 35 per cent of the population suffering at some time in their lives. Initially it was identified that asthma and hay fever were seeing the largest increases. Now, however, it’s food allergies and particularly in children. Nutritional therapist Helen Adams sees this in her Wiltshire clinic every week and sees families struggling to first identify the problem and second to manage eating around it. She has now published her first book to help those with allergies, food intolerance and sensitivities to make healthy food choices. “I Don’t Know What To Eat? – the definitive guide to food allergies, intolerance and sensitivities” has just been published in paperback and e-book. Helen said: “I wrote the book because I just couldn’t find something suitable to help my clients who are struggling to come to terms with food intolerance or, more seriously, allergy. “We all need to be more allergy aware and understand this is something which is increasing and there’s no sign of it slowing down. There are just so many myths around foods, allergies and intolerances and I wanted to shed some light on various things which I’ve come across during my time as a nutritional therapist. “When you have to consider everything you eat and drink, every moment of every day – it’s utterly exhausting.” 50
The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2018
Helen’s book has tools to help readers monitor their food intake – as with food intolerance it can take up to three days for a reaction to occur. Helen said: “How many of us can remember what we ate three days ago instantly? We have to really think about it. The tracker helps you start to make links between symptoms such as headaches, bloating or constipation with particular foods. It also helps if you are re-introducing foods so you can start to see connections between foods and symptoms.” The book starts with Helen’s personal story around her career in nutrition – and what ultimately led to her re-training to become a nutritional therapist. Aged ten her son Tom had chronic fatique syndrome and nothing seemed to help. He was off sugar, gluten, yeast and dairy and there was no ‘free-from’ aisle at that time. After many years of GP visits and consultant appointments, Helen eventually met a nutritionist who suggested eating red peppers might be helpful for Tom and they quickly became his superfood. Today Tom is studying at university, he has control of his diet, eating anything except gluten and he still eats red peppers! Helen’s book can be ordered from her website. HEALTH & BEAUTY
Declutter Your Life It’s that time of year when we get the urge to Spring Clean
I
F you can’t lay your hands on items you need because they’re buried under piles of junk; if you’re constantly moving items from one pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter-victim. Californian blogger Dave Bruno wrote The 100 Thing Challenge. He set himself a year-long experimental task of reducing his belongings
DE-CLUTTERING TIPS Deal with one room at a time - the task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished. Choose a nice day - Take the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the clutter will make it back inside. Sort everything into three piles Label them dump, donate and keep. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it. Deal with the dump and donate piles - Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone. Sort and label - Place the remaining items in clearly labelled boxes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues.
to 100 items. Although it started as a challenge he actually chose to keep living by his new rules afterwards, saying he prefers the simplicity. It would be tough for most of us to emulate Bruno exactly, but he has a point. Most of us probably put far too much time, effort and money into acquiring, keeping and storing possessions, and sometimes it’s good to let go. If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. If you feel you need help, there are experts in de-cluttering who will guide you through the process of letting go. 52
The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2018
Replace everything that remains The maxim ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. Keep small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes. When you’re done instigate a ‘one thing in: one thing out’ rule. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else must go. Finally, once a week, take two bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items. Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life.

RUNNING & FITNESS COACH
Don’t let the little things Ruin your Run
R
by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
UNNING seems like a very simple sport in that you can put on a pair of trainers and just run; but sometimes running isn’t quite that straightforward and it can be the small things that ruin a run. Blisters Blisters are very common and even tiny blisters can be extremely painful. Blisters are caused by heat buildup from the friction of running, the skin becomes hot, it can separate, and this is when fluid fills the gap between the layers of skin. Anything that intensifies this friction can cause a blister. For example, having running shoes that are too big or too small, running in wet socks, running downhill, running a faster pace than normal or increasing your mileage too quickly can all contribute to the formation of a blister. Ignoring a blister can lead to bigger problems in the long term so treat the blister straight away. Keep the area clean, dry and protected by Investing in special blister plasters. Throw away any thin cotton socks and purchase duel layer blister free socks that are cushioned in all common friction points and treat a blister as if it were a damaged muscle or joint so take time off from running if necessary.
Stitches Side stitches are very common amongst new runners and are very painful. The best advice is to look at what you are eating and drinking on the days you are running, make sure you do not have a huge meal just before you run, if you eat and then run you could still be digesting your food whilst running and this could cause the discomfort of a stitch as your food is not properly digested. The best thing to do is plan your day so that you fuel well at least 2 hours before you run, remember not everyone is the same so see what works best for you. You could eat a bigger lunch if running in the evening and then just have a snack an hour before you run but try a few things out. Make sure you also drink plenty throughout the day as fluid aids with digestion. Setting off too fast and not warming up can be another cause of a stitch so don’t go from standing to a full on run as this can cause short, shallow breathing, make sure you do a gently warm up first. Cramp Cramp is the locking of the muscle in a sustained spasm which can suddenly cause a severe pain that in most cases is so intense it forces you to stop mid run. Luckily cramp is only temporary and the causes could again be dehydration, changes in trainers, overworked muscles or an inadequate warm up.
Black Toenails Most minor ailments can be prevented by investing in a Most runners I know rarely show their naked feet good pair of running trainers, a decent pair of running socks, due to the loss of/or blackened toenails. New Atlas of Wiltshire’s Amphibians and Reptiles newt and red-eared terrapin. It is hoped that this document will stimulate further recording and that greater effort will result in the discovery of new breeding sites and new species in the county.
T is with great pleasure that Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre (WSBRC) and Wiltshire Amphibian & Reptile Group announce that The Herpetofauna of Wiltshire, First Edition, is published. This is the first document in Wiltshire to outline the distribution of the county’s reptile and amphibian populations, to promote their current distribution in the county and to focus future survey and recording efforts.
Over 10,000 records, covering the period 1996 to 2017, have been included in the atlas, offering the most up-to-date assessment of the county’s herpetofauna to date. As well as highlighting the core range of the native species, this work also aids the identification of gaps in knowledge and distribution to prioritise and direct future survey effort. It also highlights the potential to promote national and local recording schemes to volunteers and community groups to feed monitoring data towards national conservation efforts.
The Herpetofauna of Wiltshire has been produced to promote the importance of Wiltshire’s populations of amphibians and reptiles and the landscapes that support them. “Wiltshire offers diverse habitats for each of the common and widespread species in the UK”, says Gareth Harris, of (WSBRC), “ranging from the ponds of the clay vales for great crested newt, the wetlands of the Cotswold Water Park for toad and grass snake, the ephemeral ponds of the Salisbury Plain chalk plateau for common toad and great crested newt, and the chalk hilltops for common lizard.” Wiltshire supports the four species of native common and widespread reptiles found in the UK; slow worm, common lizard, grass snake and adder, as well as all five species of native amphibian; common frog, common toad, smooth newt, palmate newt and great crested newt. At least three non-native species have been recorded including American bullfrog, Alpine 56

Gemma Harding of Wiltshire Amphibian & Reptile Group adds, “The atlas represents the first document in the county to promote our amphibians and reptiles and the importance of the habitats that they need. We hope to use this to encourage greater participation in survey and monitoring as well as to promote wildlife-friendly gardening and landscapescale habitat management.” wsbrc.org.uk

GARDENING
Spruce up your Garden this Spring
Spring plants: Add a pop of colour The tried-and-tested, and perhaps quickest way, to spruce up your garden is to head down to the garden centre and pick up some new plants. Whitehall Garden Centre is an established Wiltshire business near Lacock with a plant team on hand to suggest those that could work for your garden. Popular plants for spring colour that can work in any garden include: ribes, also known as flowering currant; forsythia, which comes outs in a lovely yellow; prunus, or flowering cherry; and kerria. To find out more, check out Whitehall Garden Centre, Corsham Road, Lacock, Chippenham, SN15 2LZ. www.whitehallgardencentre.co.uk
Garden furniture: Entertaining outside Terra Verte is a small family-run business based in Seend near Melksham, which sells a broad array of garden furniture and planters online and at markets and shows around the county. Owner Paul Manning says: “The aim for many people is to create a relaxed outdoor space where it’s easy to entertain family and friends.” As such, Terra Verte’s weatherproof dining sets and modular sofas are popular, as are its range of fire pits and chimeneas. To find out more, call Terra Verte on 01380 828655, or catch them at Marlborough market every Saturday or at the Great Chalfield Manor Plant Fair on Sunday May 6th.
Garden design: Make your dream come true If you have a vision for your garden but don’t have the time or know-how to realise it, consider calling in a designer such as Melksham-based Veronica Goodenough. She’s been working in the area for more than 20 years, designing gardens that range in size from three acres to small town plots, or even just redesigning a border. Veronica says: “Initially, I visit the client to talk over their wish list and view the garden in detail, and then I’ll quote drawing a detailed plan with planting suggestions. I have a team of gardeners who help me plant up any new gardens and a wholesale nursery contact, so am able to acquire plants at reasonable prices.” To find out more, go to www.veronicagoodenough.co.uk or call on 01225 709020 or 07771 698378.

Garden buildings: Create a working space Sandymount Construction is a small domestic and commercial construction company in Royal Wootton Bassett, which now finds itself filling a gap in the home office market. Owner Mick Haren says: “We wanted a home office for our business and were busy with clients so looked at bespoke home office companies. However they were mostly interested in selling us existing buildings - the bespoke element was more do with decoration and fit out.” The only way Mick could build a home office to fit the rather awkward shape of the garden was to build it himself. The result is a space that’s comfortable, practical, usable all year round and the envy of visitors. He adds: “It was never our intention to enter this market however we have had a number of enquiries from people who have seen our office and it looks like we will be building a few more this year.” To find out more, go to www.sandymount.co.uk or call 01793 847187 62

GARDENING GARDENING
Plant a Butterfly Garden F
ASCINATING FACT … Winston Churchill loved butterflies so much he had a garden designed specifically to attract them. His family home was the beautiful Chartwell, but you really don’t need a grand estate to attract butterflies because they will happily flock to the tiniest plot if the planting is right. When planting for butterflies we need to consider their life-cycle, and of course they start life as caterpillars. Butterflies choose to lay their eggs where there is a good food supply for their hungry offspring. A patch of nettles in a sunny spot is all you need to attract the red admiral, the small tortoiseshell, the painted lady and the peacock. If you want the common blue (though sadly these are not that common now) plant some birdsfoot trefoil, also known as lady’s fingers and properly named lotus corniculatus.

A packet of sweet rocket seeds (hesperis matronalis) is a good investment. One pack produces flowers in all shades of lilac. They have a sweet scent, which is more powerful in the evening, and as a bonus they attract the orange tip butterfly. So, having satiated the caterpillars, we need to address the feeding requirements of the adult butterfly. The most famous butterflyattracting plant is probably Buddleia davidii, hence its other name, the butterfly bush. It grows well in most soils but needs to be pruned back hard every year so the flowers, and hence the butterflies, are kept at eye level. Don’t worry too much if you know very little about pruning, Buddleias are hard to kill! Sedum spectabile must be one of the easiest plants ever to grow and even thrives in my poor soil. Its dusky pink flowers are always smothered in butterflies and bees when they open in late summer.
Caryopteris clandonensis, or to use its more romantic name, blue mist spirea is also a wonderful butterfly magnet and very easy to grow. You can now buy packets of wild flower seeds and butterfly mixes. Try some among your borders and you’ll be rewarded with fluttering, jewel-like visitors all summer. BUTTERFLY ESSENTIALS Sunshine - plant butterflyattracting plants in the sunniest spots Shelter - the site needs to be out of the wind Roosting spots - Butterflies need somewhere to sleep. They prefer to be high so plant climbers like honeysuckles and clematis. Nettles and wildflowers if space is at a premium try growing them in pots. It works really well.

Their wings also have a white rear edge which is visible during flight. Renowned for its song, the male Skylark sings continuously from the point of rising vertically into the air and remaining stationary for a few minutes before parachuting back to the ground. Their population has declined so is a bird of high conservation concern.

FAITH MATTERS
‘Don’t Worry, be Happy’ A
s I write this I look out into my garden where most things have been dormant over the cold and darkness of winter, and now I can see signs of life. I love to see the daffodils and the primroses as they show the first real signs of life. If one looks closely at the shrubs and bushes the buds are starting to open up very slowly as the days get longer and the weather warmer. It never ceases to amaze me how life comes out of all that looks dead year after year. Even during the winter months I enjoy watching the birds come to the feeders And now they are starting to collect material to build their nests. I have a bird box on my garage wall where tits and sparrows have nested over the years and I have loved watching them come and go as they build their nests and then feed their young.
My garden reminds me of something Jesus said to a crowd when he sat down to teach them one day. He was talking about ‘worrying’ (Matthew 6:25-34.) Most people think that I’m very laid back, but in fact I can be the world’s greatest worrier. I can lie awake at night worrying about stuff that in the big scheme of things is trivial. Jesus said to the crowd that they were not to worry about their lives, what would be on the meal table to eat or drink and what clothes they were going to wear. He said that there is far more to life than the food you put in your stomach and more to your outward appearance than the clothes you wear.
68
The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2018
Jesus then reminded the crowd of the birds, who neither sow nor harvest nor gather the crop into barns yet their heavenly Father feeds them. And the wild flowers in the fields that grow, they neither labour or spin, yet God creates them in all their beauty. Jesus added that even King Solomon in all his finery was not dressed like the flowers, but if God clothes the flowers and feeds the birds how much more will he look after you? If there is one thing set to irritate me, it is when someone says to me “Stop worrying!” It is as though they believe that one can turn off the worrying with a switch. I wish it were true, but sadly it isn’t. Yet worry doesn’t help us. It doesn’t add anything good to our lives. It drains us and brings with it doubt and fear. I have found that it steals my time, it steals my joy, my peace, and it steals my energy. However, I have found that the times that I worry most are the times when I rely least on God. I find that handing my worries over to God doesn’t get rid of them completely but it does help me to off load something of the burden and reminds me that he is in control. St Paul once wrote as part of a letter: ‘Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the centre of your life.’ (Philippians 4:6-7 The Message) It’s like God’s own version of “Don’t worry, be happy” - but with a glorious twist deeper than the universe. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES
Skoda Octavia vRS Estate By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups vRS is the Skoda badge that denotes the Czech firm’s most powerful and capable models. vRS means performance, and the symbol commands a lot more respect than you might realise. In the Czech Republic, Skoda vRS models are admired for their toughness and performance, and in the UK, they’ve also garnered a real fanbase. Octavia vRS owners often state there’s probably no finer all-rounder on the market at this price point, and they might well have a case. For under £30,000, you get a powerful 2.0-litre 184PS diesel engine mated to a decent automatic gearbox that helps put the power down via all-wheel drive. It handles nimbly for a larger car too, and is equally at home on a B road as it is on a motorway chewing up the miles.
It’s not often you can say an estate car is handsome, but the Octavia vRS has a smart, modern, unaggressive look to it, despite being one of Skoda’s athletic models. You can notice the influence from Skoda’s owners - Volkswagen - in the styling of its newer models. In the same way that the Golf GTI and R models aren’t too aggressive, the Skoda isn’t either. Of course, Skoda is a very modest brand, so the confident and unassuming styling works well for it. Space is abundant in the Octavia estate; there aren’t many cars you can get for under £30k that can reach 62mph in under eight seconds with a boot the size of a small cavern. There’s also room aplenty for human beings too, with the rear seats more than spacious enough for an adult to sit and relax in over a long journey.
So, the Skoda Octavia vRS is fast, it’s good to drive, it’s safe, and it’s got more space than your attic. At under £30,000, you’ll have serious difficulties finding a better all-rounder than this Czech folk hero. BOOKS
A Good Read
How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
......................................................................................... I’m really not sure whether to describe this as a children’s book, but certainly if you know a teenage girl of 13 upwards, they will be captivated by it. Rosoff ’s debut novel is narrated by Daisy, a 15 year old American sent to England by her newly married father for the summer to stay with her cousins. She is immediately drawn in by this wild and wonderful bunch – Osbert, Isaac, Piper and Edmond – and delighted when Aunt Penn begins to tell her more about the mother she never knew. But, within days, the world changes. A bomb in London may or may not have started a war, and Aunt Penn is unable to return home. Left alone, the children attempt to survive in the best way they can, and Daisy and Edmond fall in love. Meanwhile, the mysterious war develops through rumours and shortages and increasing military presence, until the inevitable happens and Daisy and Edmond are separated. In Daisy, Rosoff creates an engaging, realistic and intelligent narrator whose matter of fact style carries us forward. Something like a cross between Holden Caulfield and Esther Greenwood (The Bell Jar), she deserves to be as widely known as both.
Crossword & Sudoku solution page 69
This is a novel about first love, about war and about being young. If you’re buying it for that teenager, you could do worse than read it yourself before you hand it over. You won’t regret it.
Notes to my Mother-in-law by Phyllida Law
......................................................................................... This is one of those deceptive little books that looks like a quick ‘read it and forget it’, but is really much more. At little over a hundred pages, it is indeed a quick read – easily done in one sitting – but the pictures of family life it paints will, justifiably, stay in your memory and affections for some time. The title is a fairly straightforward description of the contents. Law’s mother in law, Annie, shared her family home for seventeen years and ‘was picture-book perfect’. As she was deaf, Law would write her notes with reminders, requests and titbits of gossip every evening before going to bed. In response to her husband’s comment that she could have written and illustrated a book in the time she spent on these notes, she did so, gathering together a series of missives – some long, some short, some sad and some funny. The one sided nature of the story – we never hear anything of Annie’s replies – means that we fill in the gaps ourselves. The topics range from the mundane – the availability of pearl barley or dusters – to the profound – the death of a family pet. All, however, are tinged with humour, mainly from the chaos of family life and the cast of unseen characters whose many deeds and misdeeds fill the pages. What raises this above the ordinary, however, is the sense of a bygone age. Annie belonged to a past that is gone, having been in service and maintained many of the disciplines and routines she learnt as a girl. The depth of feeling in Law’s relationship with her is palpable, and as Annie becomes increasingly ill the reader cannot help but feel the sense of imminent loss. Often funny, never sentimental but truly touching – a wonderful read.
