Chippenham Soap Box Derby

Local Water Babies classes were holding their biannual Splashathon in July. Children and their carers were given the fancy dress option of either a pirate or princess theme and asked to gain sponsorship for swimming a width in their special outfit. It was a first time opportunity for lots of the children to gain sponsorship for doing something very special; raising money for Tommy’s, the charity that helps fund research into the causes and prevention of pregnancy complications that lead to miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. The Wiltshire franchise, that teach at St Mary’s Sports Centre, Calne and various other pools across Wiltshire and East Somerset, are hoping to smash their £5000.00 target and across the country, Water Babies, the baby and toddler swim school, are hoping to raise over £1 million for Tommy’s.

Splashathon for Tommy’s

On Sunday 25th June Chippenham came truly came to life with almost 12,000 visitors to the town thanks to the first ever Soap Box Derby. The day saw a fantastic display of homemade, non-motorised karts race through the town from Market Place down the High Street to The Bridge. Event sponsor, Debbie Williams of John Williams Heating Services Ltd. said, “Chippenham BID put on a fantastic and well organised event. What a fantastic day and what a fantastic way to get the people of Chippenham together. The town was buzzing, with local businesses and people of all ages coming together to watch the races. We can’t wait for next year!”

For more information about Water Babies and how to sponsor us visit www.tommys.org/splash

New President of Chippenham Rotary Stuart Gilbert is the new President of Chippenham Rotary Club. “I feel it’s a great privilege to serve as Rotary President for the next 12 months. We have partnered with two great charities this year, Waste Not Want Not who help people on low incomes to purchase good quality products at affordable prices and Well Boring who are busy boring wells to provide fresh water in Western Kenya.” We welcome men & women of any age who have a desire to help others. We meet every Monday at 12.30 in the Rotary Hall on Station Hill, Chippenham. www.chippenhamrotary.org 6

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

The karts arrived at the Vehicle Check Zone in a range of shapes, sizes, colours and wacky themes, and all were the product of hard work and creativity from the teams who entered the Soap Box Derby. Juniors and Seniors went head to head in their categories to scoop a range of trophies including: Most Eye-Catching Soap Box, Best Team Effort, The Wacky Racer, the John Williams Heating Trophy for Fastest Business Kart and the Eagle One Trophy for Fastest Soap Box. Mayor of Chippenham, Councillor Mary Norton said, “The Soap Box Derby was great fun, and well organised. Even the weather brightened up after I complained that the tap needed to be turned off. The karts were very imaginative and eye catching, and I think a good time was had by all. The children all seemed to enjoy the fun; we certainly did.” The 25th June 2017 will go down in the annals of history as the inaugural Soap Box Derby in Chippenham, and in the memories of all who attended as a smashing day out!

It’s been such an amazing year and we feel privileged to have been able to lock so many people up and are overwhelmed with all the wonderful feedback we’ve had. Thank you folks! New room is proving popular! We are delighted to have received fantastic feedback for our new room ‘Victoria’s Last Challenge’ so thank you to all that have played. It is a very different room to our first one but we all like a bit of variety don’t we! The room took a lot longer to set up due to the ‘decoration’ and theming involved but we are super happy with the result. If you’ve not played Victoria’s last challenge’ yet, it’s a race to escape Echoes Hill Manor’s attic room with your inheritance from your recently deceased Great Aunt Victoria. Victoria was always a prankster and she loved nothing more than running treasure hunts for the village and making puzzles for her family to enjoy. It appears this trend has continued, even into her death ... New opening hours! We are extremely happy to announce that from August 2017 we will be offering more games during the weekdays. Below is a list of the times offered each day. Monday - 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm. Tuesday - 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm. Wednesday - 10am, 6pm, 8pm Thursday - 6pm, 8pm Friday - 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm. Sat & Sun - 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm These new hours will be great for people who want to play during the week – either companies for their teambuilding days or holiday makers. If you run or work for a small business get in touch for some seriously fun teambuilding! We can cater for up to 12 players with both our rooms. Two room head-to-heads. We’ve been having some serious fun recently since we opened our second room. We’ve hosted a number of head-to-head games. This is one party booking both rooms and having two teams compete against each other! It’s hilarious! ‘Boys vs girls’ tends to be the popular choice. We had one such game and there was 16 seconds between them! This set up is ideal for larger groups as up to 12 players can participate. Ideal for hen and stag activities too! I have seen small Companies with a share capital of £40,000 upwards, which can create a debt owed to the Company for unpaid shares, and effectively removes virtually all the benefits of limited liability. Example: If a Company goes into liquidation, the shareholders can lose the value of their shares. With a share capital of £100 this means they might have to pay £100 personally to the creditors. With share capital of £40,000, the risk is £40,000! To cancel shares issued in error, the Directors must: Draft a Special Resolution cancelling the shares which must be approved by the shareholders Draw up a statement of solvency confirming that the Company can pay its debts and will be able to do so for the following 12 months Confirm that the solvency statement was made not more than 15 days before the resolution was passed – and provided to the shareholders. Complete a form SH19 and send to Companies House – with the other three documents. The shares will be cancelled and monies can be repaid to the appropriate shareholders – or the value of the cancelled shares can be used to clear/reduce amounts owed for unpaid share capital – bringing the share capital down to a safer level. 

The Self-Storage Business was established around 4 years ago with both All Boxed and now Calne Self Store servicing clients locally. Both commercial and residential customers with today’s busy life styles and modern housing designs creating space is of a high premium. Removals Pete Monk established the removals business some 43 years ago. With a previous life in the RAF Pete established the business in a part time capacity until launching full time into Quickmove Wiltshire. He joined the Britannia Group later giving the business access to International Shipping and increasing the capacity of the business with a well known national brand. The acquisition keeps all 14 staff who have enjoyed loyal service with some serving the business for over 25 years. ‘’One thing that was evident right from our initial dealings was the dedication of all the Britannia team from drivers to removers to all the internal teams’’ reports Nick Clarke (Projects Director). Britannia is the UK’s largest moving group, it has helped tens of thousands of families and businesses move home and office throughout the uK for 30 years. ‘’The Britannia Movers brand is well known in the industry for quality residential removals and will boost our existing commercial mover’s infrastructure with a fleet of vehicles and staff well versed in all things removal!’’ reports Nick For further information on Self Storage, Removals or Office Furniture Showroom please contact Nick Clarke on 01249 819419 for a visit to our sites.

The popular cycling challenge raises vital funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance and has a choice of routes to suit cyclists of all abilities. This year’s event is taking place on Sunday 17 September 2017 and bookings are now being taken. Lauren, a Champion Para-cyclist of Chippenham and a member of the British Cycling Academy, completed the 45 mile route in the Wiltshire Big Wheel last year and is going to do so again in this year’s event. Lauren said: “I really enjoyed taking part in the Wiltshire Big Wheel last year and it was interesting to explore different places in the county. I’m looking forward to doing it again this year and to the challenge of doing the 45 mile ride. The event is a great way to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s lifesaving service while at the same time enjoying the countryside and keeping fit.” The event starts and finishes at The Green in Devizes. Golfers get in the swing to raise money for Julia’s House Chippenham Rotary Club avoid the ‘rough’ to raise money for Julia’s House

New Professional at Woodbridge Park Golf Club James Broughton (PGA Professional) has just joined Woodbridge Park Golf Club near Brinkworth and is already making a difference. James says ‘I chose Woodbridge Park because as golf club, it has so much potential. I am already working with the management and staff to develop the course and take it to the next level. My new shop within the Clubhouse is already up and running and my range of golf clothing and accessories is both vibrant and keenly priced. My offer of a free 30-minute lesson to all members is well received and this extends to all new members. We are delivering AFFORDABLE GOLF at Woodbridge Park with a range of excellent green fee deals and membership options, including a beginner’s package and an under 25 years promotion, which maintains its position as best value in the area. Contact me on jamesbroughton@woodbridgepark.co.uk for information on all matters and view our website www.woodbridgeparkgolfclub.co.uk for an overview of the Club and what is on offer.’

Thanks to the support of some 100 golfers, the many hole sponsors and donors of numerous prize and auction lots, the 2017 Rotary Golf Classic raised £10 000 for Julia’s House, nominated by President Richard Meek as his charity for the Rotary year. The event, which took place on 26th April, enjoyed excellent weather and was staged for the 12th successive year at the Manor House Golf Club at Castle Combe and it was hailed by everyone who took part as the Club’s best to date. In addition to the two charity holes (‘beat the Pro’ and “stay on the green”), the day featured on-course competitions for the longest drive and nearest the pin for both ladies and gents.

Wednesday 6th September 2017, 7pm

After the golf, there was dinner and a charity auction with 39 lots ably conducted by local auctioneer Gordon Brockman. Participants bid for an exciting array of items ranging from a Champagne Lunch for two at the Savoy Hotel in London, a selection of fine French wine, to a days coastal cruise for two on the Historic MV Balmoral.

The Lansdowne Strand is delighted to host a talk being organised by Atwell Motor Museum about the A4's history as a major coaching route (of which, naturally, the Lansdowne Strand was a key feature).

Richard Meek the President of the Rotary Club of Chippenham commented, “Julia’s House is a really fantastic charity, with their Devizes facility and staff providing practical and emotional support for families in Wiltshire caring for a child with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions. Many congratulations to Rick Squires and his team for running a really successful event again this year which has raised such a large amount for the charity”.

Talk - ‘The Coaching Trade 1750 – 1850 Along the Great West Way

The hotel will be offering a Wiltshire cure chop (a delicious celebration of Calne's heritage as home to the Harris factory) with a pint of its Harris Ale for just £12 throughout the Monday-Friday of Calne Heritage Week. 26

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

Liz Froud, Community Fundraiser explained ‘The Rotary Club of Chippenham has been a great supporter of Julia’s House and we are always bowled over by their fundraising ideas and the enthusiasm they show for the work we do. We are really glad to hear their Golf Classic went so well and we are incredibly grateful for all their hard work.’

FAMILY WISE

Dominic Murray and Kirsty Gray Family Wise Limited arrived in the Heritage Quarter in style in October of last year. Following exponential expansion in early 2016 after featuring on BBC1’s Family Finders series, the team needed more space and took the opportunity to lease 5 St Mary’s Courtyard with the immediate ‘planting’ of a large purple family tree. Founded in 2012 by the dynamic Managing Director, Kirsty Gray, Family Wise Limited carry out research cases from family histories to tracing long lost family members, adoption work to heir tracing and everything in between. With the research team based in various countries around the world and partner companies across the globe, Family Wise Limited are understandably very proud that they have 100% ‘crack rate’ on all commissioned cases. With a policy of being open, honest, transparent and ethical, Kirsty and her team have already received some outstanding feedback from local residents who have used their services. From the simpler tasks of ordering a certified copy of someone’s birth certificate to locating ancestors in Ireland in the early 1800s, no job is too big or too small for the team at Family Wise Limited. 32

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

Being a central part of Calne town centre was crucial when choosing the new office space and the Heritage Quarter certainly provides the perfect home for this type of business. Family Wise Limited is already working with Calne Our Place and will open their doors on Saturday 9 September especially for Calne Heritage Week when appointments can be pre-booked with the team of experts or people can just drop in to find out more about what Family Wise Limited can do! Have you always wanted to know more about your family history? Is there someone you are desperate to make contact with? Family Wise Limited is right on your doorstep – why not get in touch?

North Wiltshire embraces Heritage Open Days Annual Festival Find out what’s going on to celebrate the county’s rich history

H

ERITAGE takes centre stage in North Wiltshire and across England during September with the annual Heritage Open Days festival of history and culture.

Originally established in 1994, Heritage Open Days is part of the European Heritage Days project which began three years earlier. Its aim was to throw up the doors of historic monuments and buildings, especially those not normally open to the public. This year the festival officially runs from Thursday September 7 to Sunday September 10. More than 5,000 events will take place nationwide involving more than 40,000 volunteers with support from the Wiltshire-based National Trust and the People’s Postcode Lottery. Each year themes are chosen and this year highlights include celebrating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality; 50 years since

the establishment of Conservation Areas in the UK and the European theme of exploring the place of history in the natural world. For more information go to: www.heritageopendays.org.uk Wiltshire will be playing its part as well as offering many other historically themed events and projects taking place across the county during September and the early autumn. One example is the annual sponsored ‘RIDE & STRIDE’ taking place on Saturday September 9 and organised by the County Historic Churches Trust. Last year a total of £53,000 was collected with some people covering over 100 miles and 40 churches to those who walked from their own church to a neighbouring one. Visit http://www. wiltshirehistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ride-andstride/ for details.

VisitWiltshire Secures £1m Discover England Funding to Develop ‘The Great West Way’ VisitWiltshire has been successful in securing £1m over two years from the Discover England Fund to develop the Great West Way into a premier touring route between London and Bristol. The ‘Great West Way’ project will be led by destination management organisation VisitWiltshire and is set to transform tourism along the 125-mile route – a quarter of which is in Wiltshire. This is one of a number of successful projects made possible by HM Government’s £40m Discover England Fund, administered by VisitEngland (www.discoverenglandfund.org). The ‘Great West Way’ project will be supported by 40% match funding from partners in the public and private sectors. VisitWiltshire Chief Executive David Andrews said, “We are absolutely thrilled to hear that our round 2 bid has been successful. This major investment will help us create one of the world’s premier touring routes between London and Bristol, linking destinations,

accommodation, attractions and transport options under a single Great West Way theme. It will include the development of inspirational new content and channels making it easier for visitors to book personalised trips, and act as a catalyst for visitor economy growth along the route.” The Great West Way is targeted primarily at international visitors but is also likely to benefit domestic tourism. VisitEngland Chief Executive Sally Balcombe said: “We have been delighted by the many bids reflecting the innovation in product development thriving across the country’s tourism landscape. This commitment to fund the ‘Great West Way’ is the first of a number of major investments that will enhance England’s tourism offer. Together, the successful Discover England Fund projects will boost international and domestic visitor growth, creating a step-change in the industry and spreading the economic benefits of tourism across the country.”

Here are just few historical treats coming our way over the next few weeks: CALNE: A town-wide ‘Open Doors Day’ on Saturday September 9 with the opportunity to step inside many historic buildings. Talks at venues including Calne Heritage Centre – new for this year is a talk from David Dawson, curator of Wiltshire Museum. Guided walks including some with the National Trust at Cherhill Down and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust at Morgan’s Hill. Bell-ringing taster sessions at St Marys Church. Useful tips - two hours free parking at Calne Heritage Quarter car park accessed from the A4. For buses, the regular 55 and 33 services stop in the town centre. The full Calne Heritage Week programme can be picked up from Calne Heritage Centre or viewed on the Calne Our Place Facebook page. See page 28 for more details.

Chippenham Canal Walks: There is also the opportunity now to walk along a continuous stretch of canal from the bottom of the former flight of locks near Pewsham to the impressive Double Bridge near Reybridge – a distance of almost 1.2 kilometres. This stretch of restored canal is now full of water for the first time in more than 100 years. Much of the restoration has been carried out by teams from the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch of the Canal Trust. The Trust has a workboat which can travel the entire length of the route, meaning craft are moving back and forth along this line of the canal for the first time since the 1900s. The Wilts & Berks Canal once linked the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne and Swindon. Yelde Hall Market Place, Chippenham. Free entry Open Friday and Saturday 10.30am - 3.30pm The Yelde Hall is one of Chippenham’s most iconic buildings. Grade I listed, it is one of few remaining timber buildings in the town and was built in the mid-15th century. Since then it has served a variety of purposes such as a site for local government and as the town’s fire station. Today the Yelde Hall is free to visit and houses a 19th century fire engine, a selection of objects from Chippenham Museum’s collection and an interactive tableau depicting a scene from the building’s past.

CORSHAM: Chapel Plaister, situated on the B3109 near Corsham is a cluster of houses in the centre of which is the Chapel itself. It dates back from the 12th century and while it is still a working chapel, over recent years it has been the practice to open the Chapel for two hours every Photograph by Jerry Dix Wednesday afternoon during the summer welcoming tourists, parishioners and visitors. It will be open each Wednesday up to and including Wednesday 13 September from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a steward in attendance who will try to answer any questions about heritage of the Chapel. Peacock Arts Trail, Corsham Saturday September 30 to Sunday October 8 – details are available from www.peacockartstrail.co.uk MALMESBURY:

The Yelde Hall will be open on Saturday 9th September along with several other historic buildings in Chippenham Town Centre from 11am – 4pm during Heritage Open Days. Drop in to learn about the traditional building techniques used within the timber framed building with craftsman Francis Stacey of FE Stacey & Co who led on the Yelde Hall’s restoration in 2016.

Feel free to visit and look at the old Moravian Church in Malmesbury. The Friends of the Athelstan Museum have recently been granted planing permission and listed building consent for providing a large open space in the body of the church for exhibitions and museum displays but it will be able to be used for many other functions such as talks and lectures, meetings, social events, concerts and art shows. There will also be kitchen facilities and loos, including provision for the disabled. Upstairs on the balcony will be a new improved store for the museum collection with a controlled environment and better storage facilities. The organisation is still appealing for donations to continue its work - www.malmesburyappeal.co.uk

Heroes are Champions at Pewsham Locks Ex- military veterans recently visited Pewsham Locks site south of Chippenham to work alongside volunteers of The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. Veterans were involved in a project to learn practical skills such as bricklaying, mixing mortar, fence erecting, countryside management, and general site maintenance, including the correct and safe way to use and maintain tools and equipment. Regular volunteers with Melksham, Calne & Chippenham Branch shared their expertise and knowledge with the veterans, who were delighted to be engaged in a project of lasting importance to the local community. The project centred around Top Lock, the highest of the flight of three locks which raised boats 29 feet on their way from Melksham and Lacock, to Chippenham, Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett, Swindon and beyond. As well as helping to restore the lock for future generations to enjoy, the veterans have also constructed a fenced Learning Through Play Area, for visiting families and children. They have created a full scale outline of a narrow boat which would have used the locks, positioned stepping logs and constructed a natural woven den for children to enjoy. The project entitled ‘Heritage Heroes’ was part of a national collaboration with the Canal & River Trust and Help for Heroes. The project at Pewsham was particularly appropriate for veterans, as many of the structures, including Top Lock, were blown up by the military as part of explosives practice in the years prior to World War II. Tea, banter, cake, coffee, banter, more tea, more banter, and sandwiches all helped the work go well, and both the veterans and the volunteers had the satisfaction of enjoying working hard in the fresh air to achieve a lasting legacy. 46

Dave Maloney, Chair of MCC Branch said: “Hopefully, the relationships established during this project will continue, with some veterans already expressing an interest in continuing to volunteer with the Trust. Heritage Heroes was community engagement at its best, and we are confident that we will continue to build on this incredibly positive experience in the future. Dave added, “This stretch of canal is a prime example of the progress we’re making and we hope that the H4H veterans’ efforts will inspire

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

even more people to support the restoration campaign. We need people who can help with fundraising and events as well as engineering, bricklaying, digging and grasscutting; there are as many different jobs as there are volunteers! “This part of the canal is already hugely popular with walkers, runners and cyclists but we’re confident that one day it will be popular with boaters too. Together we can leave a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.”

Chilli Fiesta

On Saturday 8th July Chippenham’s Market Place was spiced up with a generous helping of all things chilli. Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council welcomed Chilli Fest UK onto the streets of Chippenham for the first time this year. Chilli Fest UK travel around the country taking their chilli fiestas to towns high and low, and it was great to welcome them to the town. They brought with them stalls selling a wide range of chilli sauces, chilli cheese, chilli beer, chilli olives, chilli plants and even chilli cocktails! There was an eye-catching chilli artist, too, whose imagination was a hit with the visitors. Of course, a chilli fiesta wouldn’t be a fiesta without some

food to eat on the day, and Chew Chew Barbecue fit the bill – a barbecue in the shape of a train! Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “It was great to see so many people in the Market Place on Saturday. Some had come specifically to attend the Chilli Fiesta and some stumbled upon it, but everyone I spoke to said they loved what they were seeing…and tasting!”

The day wouldn’t have been complete without the chilli eating contest, preceded by a superb dance from Chippenham’s Dancing Academy. It was a true spectacle: 10 brave (and possibly foolish) men signed up and ate their way through raw chillis, growing in heat as they went, until one was crowned the Chilli Titan! We can confidently say that it’ll stay in the memories of those who attended for years to come. Leader of Chippenham Town Council, Councillor Sandie Webb said, “The Chilli Fiesta was a great event to have in Chippenham, the high street was full of people enjoying the entertainment and a wide selection of tasty treats made with chillis.” Everyone left a little redder in the face than they’d arrived – either from the glorious sun or the copious amounts of chilli they’d consumed! The Pear Tree at Purton Country House Hotel Wins Second AA Rosette

“It is important to us our restaurant is noted for our culinary offerings because our menu is what attracts our regular clientele. When local people choose to come to us to celebrate christenings, weddings and birthdays they can do so safe in the knowledge that our reputation continues to thrive.” The AA recognizes approximately 4000 hotels across Britain and Ireland. The rosettes allow prospective guests to compare quality both nationally and locally between restaurants sharing the same rating.

W

ILTSHIRE country hotel The Pear Tree has just been awarded its second AA Rosette for its restaurant by the prestigious independent national guide. The Pear Tree of Purton has once again been commended by the respected directory for its ‘global flavours on the menu’. The anonymous reviewer was impressed by his three-course meal complimenting the restaurant on the modern British cuisine, which he describes as a ‘refinement to the kitchen’s output.’ Praise was also given to the wine on offer from the owner’s vineyard. Alix Young, hotel manager, said: “We are thrilled to receive our second double AA rosette. To receive one is a boost for any restaurant, to receive two rosettes for culinary excellence is exactly what we are aiming for. “We’re incredibly proud of our kitchen team for their creativity and productivity in offering seasonal, well cooked meals. The award recognizes the front of house team alongside their presentation and attention to detail too.

THE INTERVIEW

Meet Wiltshire entrepreneur

Tim Weeks

TIM WEEKS is the 34-year-old co-director of Wessex Auction Rooms which operates out of Westbrook Farm, Draycot Cerne, near Chippenham. He took over the business from his father Peter, with his best friend Martin Hughes. Tim lives with his wife Alexa, son Albie, aged six and daughter Bella, aged four, in Bradford On Avon. Interview by Fiona Scott

Where did your love of antiques and collectibles come from?

What did you do before running Wessex Auction Rooms?

With my dad being an auctioneer, I grew up with it and from about eight years old, I remember watching my father on the rostrum on a Saturday and I absolutely hated it. I would rather have been at home watching cartoons. However I suppose even then I absorbed the buzz of the saleroom.

I did a degree at Greenwich in Criminology believe it or not. I always knew I would come back to the auction room so I did something off the wall and I loved it. At school I was very sporty and also in sixth form but the auction room was always there. Later I got a job in advertising sales with Future Publishing in Bath and I really embraced the experience. It was such a good time in my life and the things I learned in those years, I now use every single day. It was such a good grounding for running a business and has just given me a great head start.

It was only three months ago when going through my mum’s attic I found a piece of paper from me, probably from about year eight at school, about work experience and I was interested in working at Sothebys as an auctioneer.

What’s the most important thing for you about the business? It’s the absolute passion I have for what I do. I genuinely want to do the best I can for every client, in the saleroom, on the rostrum, on the phone, on home visits. I love what I do. I love objects and collections and people’s passion for those objects. Every item has a story. Those stories often revolve around people so you get emotionally involved. Do you have a passion for any particular object or collection? I’m an addict for toys and I can talk toys all day long. I am 100 per cent fully into toys. There is such nostalgia and personal attachment to toys which mark our own childhoods. When I’m out with friends who aren’t that interested continued overleaf

THE INTERVIEW recording and he started asking me questions which I then answered. It felt very natural and I thought it was a bit different so I submitted it. The next thing I know the series producer got in touch and it went from there. I’ve had an amazing time. I’ve also done Bargain Hunt & I hope to do more. How important is Wiltshire to you? I’m a great believer in community. Although I grew up in Bath, I’ve made Bradford On Avon my home with my wife and children. We’re not looking to change that. It’s a place you can visit for a day or live here and it feels like a holiday. It has everything we need and is just a lovely working, ancient town. I adore Bath don’t get me wrong, but this is home.

Another love, and some of you may find this surprising, is Swindon. I like big towns and cities for their amenities. I like London and I like New York City and I like to feel the hustle and bustle of that much energy and life. Swindon gives that to me in Wiltshire. It’s got a brilliant business hub, it has that history of the railway (remember I’m into toys) and I love visiting regularly.

in antiques or collectibles – I will often talk about toys and they get it. They say things like ‘I had that’ or ‘I wanted that’. How did television come into your life? It was about a year ago when I was told about an opportunity to take part in a new BBC show featuring the Wiltshire-based presenter Paul Martin. You had to send in a small video. I’m quite theatrical, I can talk non-stop and it’s something I’ve always dreamed of but done nothing about. I was about to record a video and had it all planned when my son Albie came to sit on my lap as we were 58

I also regularly visit Lacock, which led me and my family to join the National Trust which is brilliant if you’ve got a family and you are looking for things to do, places to see and go and enjoy. I do like green, open space and air.

HEALTH

Oakmead Clinic

Nutritional therapist Helen Adams offers support to those living with cancer

H

ELEN ADAMS, founder of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic can help people with a range of issues from supporting them with good nutrition as they seek to lose weight through to helping parents of newborn babies who are not feeding properly. One of the most challenging aspects of Helen’s work is supporting people to live well with cancer. “Recently I’ve been supporting a lady with cancer. She’s had the disease for six years and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and has been told her condition is terminal. She came to me as she wants food to support her more than it is at the moment to give her the best possible quality of life.” Helen can work with those suffering from cancer alongside their treatment and can help sufferers with issues which often get overlooked. “Food can taste horrible when you are having dramatic treatments like chemotherapy. I work with clients on finding foods which are healthy, they can tolerate and which have taste when they are having to take strong medicines as part of their treatment,” Helen said. Helen explains we are all creating cancer cells every day and in most cases our bodies can get rid of them. In some cases that doesn’t happen and the cells multiply. “The latest scientific research is showing cancer cells grow with glucose. Some are also affected by the body’s hormones if they become out of balance. In supporting someone living with cancer, the role of sugar in the diet needs to be challenged so we have what we need and no more. “Excess sugar also affects our hormone balance which drives some cancers, so it’s a double problem. Our bodies prefer to draw energy from glucose (a form of sugar) but we can replace some with good fats. Our bodies can draw energy from good fat and it usually takes a few days to ‘switch over’ to fat burning. Evidence is now suggesting there are benefits to trying a ‘ketogenic’ diet – used for many years to help

60

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

people with epilepsy – which is higher in good fats, adequate in protein and low in carbohydrates. “This type of diet must be undertaken with professional help and support, as it’s good to take rest breaks to keep it working efficiently. Research is however increasingly suggesting nutrition and diet could be key to producing better outcomes for those with cancer, helping people extend their quality of life for longer. “I personally believe a huge amount can be done by looking at the food we eat, especially for anyone going through the trauma of dealing with cancer. It’s important to remember cancer is a label but it is not the whole person. I can support the whole person by looking at how food modifies the action of cancer on the body - whether this is helping them to be stronger for medical treatment, reducing the spread of cancer (metastasis), helping to switch on the gene that destroys cancer and then helping them to recover after medical treatment with nourishing food options. ‘At the very least, when their food doesn’t taste right (a downside of chemo), I can help them play with food flavours to make it more palatable.” Anyone interested in talking to Helen about the relationship between food, nutrition and cancer can book a 30-minute free discovery consultation via the website – www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk or email helen@ oakmeadclinic.co.uk Helen is qualified in functional medicine, has a naturopath nutrition diploma, is a senior associate of the Royal Society of Medicine – a full list of her qualifications are available on her website: www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY

All About the Eyes by Kelly Shaw

S

UMMER is finally here and if you’re anything like me you’re dreading the panda eyes that can put a dampener on any beach or pool day. We’ve all been there - you step into the water looking like Ursula Andress and step out looking like a panda! Never fear though, summer doesn’t have to be ruined by makeup mishaps. Whether you love chilling by the pool or swimming in the sea, it’s always great to know that your eye makeup will stay put. However, we all know that waterproof mascara just doesn’t cut it, so this month we’re talking about what other options you have such as permanent lash lifts, lash tints and lash extensions.

Lash Lifts are considered to be the most advanced of the lash treatments and involves the straightening of the lashes at the root, which creates a lovely openeye look. They are fantastic at adding length, volume and lift to your lashes and generally last for up to 6-8 weeks. Your average lash lift involves placing the lashes on silicone shields which pull the lashes up whilst a perming solution is applied to the roots. This essentially straightens and lifts the lashes to give the perfect pre-holiday look. After this, a tint is added which enhances the boldness of the look and ensures that you can do away with constantly applying mascara every day. This way, whatever water you are exposed to you know that you won’t need to worry about your mascara running. 62

If that sounds a little too much for you then why not ease in gently with an eyelash tint? This is a great introduction to lash services and gives your lashes more depth depending on what colour you choose. This treatment works on all hair colours but really transforms fairer hair giving the eyes more definition, perfect for sunny days and poolside! You won’t get the lift like in the lash lift but it will make your eyes bolder without make-up. An eyebrow tint is also a really good way to maintain that makeup-free look whilst you are out in the sun or near the water. Eyebrows can give incredible shape and definition to the face and great eyebrows can really make a difference to your overall look. A shape and tint is the best way to keep your eyebrows looking perfect on holiday and will enhance the eyes regardless of the weather. Lastly, lash extensions are always an option if you are looking for an enhancement that will give you a bolder look. Although lash extensions are less natural than their counterparts which use the client’s own lashes, the effects can be amazing. There are many different options available the easiest and most effective being Strip Lashes that can be applied

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

at home. If you want something to last a bit longer and look more natural then semi-permanent lash extensions would be a great option. This involves applying individual lashes to enhance your own natural lashes. They can add length and volume and typically last up to three weeks giving a full eyeopening result. They are perfect for a natural summer look and mean that you will always have a full and bold set of lashes. With the latest technology giving us amazing new ways to enhance the eyes, there is no need to panic about wearing makeup this summer. The natural look is always a summer favourite and is best achieved with the help of eyelash and eyebrow tints, shaping and extensions. The Cat’s Whiskers!

I

NTERNATIONAL Cat Day is an annual celebration of one of the world’s favourite animals. As a card-carrying dog-lover I admit I didn’t know much about our feline friends so I was fascinated to unearth some cool cat-facts! Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt. Cats sleep for two-thirds of their lives. They usually spend 13-16 hours of the day asleep. (I am definitely coming back as a cat!) rather than each other.

MOTORING

New Toyota Prius Plugin Hybrid By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups Location: Barcelona, Spain

L

ET’S get one thing answered – the new 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is not exciting, okay? But, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad car. This is one very ingenious machine, with some awesome features – the most outstanding being the solar panel roof that can place just enough ‘go’ into the Toyota’s drive battery for an extra few free miles every day. The Prius PHV - as it’s abbreviated to - also has a refreshed electric powertrain.

PROS ‘N’ CONS • Appearance √ • Tech √ • Efficiency √ • Cornering √ • Four-seater only X FAST FACTS • Max speed: 101 mph • 0-62 mph: 11.1 secs • Combined mpg: 283 • Engine layout: 1798cc 4-cylinder petrol electric • Max. power (PS): 122 • CO2: 22 g/km Price: £34,895

A large 8.8kWh lithium ion battery is housed under the floor of the Toyota’s boot, together with a hi-tech electrical arrangement to move clout through it. This works well and provides, what is essentially a fourthgeneration Prius, some worthwhile shove, especially as the car also has a twin motor hybrid powertrain. This raises pure electric power from 72PS to 103PS. All this gives the Toyota five-door hatch a maximum speed of 84mph when driven in unadulterated electric mode. Mind you, you can only get away with this form of propulsion for so long – the electric range is 39 miles, but expect 20-25 miles real-world. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid also has a 1.8 petrol engine, and along with the electric wizardry, 122PS is produced – giving a zero to 62mph time of 11.1sec and a maximum speed of 101mph. Hardly exciting, as I said earlier – but it’s not abysmal performance, either. More importantly, the Prius PHV breaths out a tiny 22g/km of CO2 and it’s possible to get 283mpg out of the car. No, that’s not a typo – that’s the claimed figure.

72

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

Of course, reality doesn’t always match up to what we’re told, and on a long motorway stretch, I only managed to get 59mpg – but then I did have my foot down – and hardly used electric mode. Instead, I mucked around with the ‘Normal’ ‘Eco’ and ‘Power’ settings, seeing what difference they made to the car. It’s difficult to tell much difference between ‘Eco’ and ‘Normal’ – but the ‘Power’ mode does give you a bit of a push in the back – and a lot more noise – reminiscent of a slightly unhinged vacuum cleaner. Anyway, away from the tech and figures, the new Prius PHV is similar to the normal Prius – apart from a couple of things. Unlike the regular model, it’s only got two seats in the rear – so it’s a strict four-seater - and the boot is smaller. This is all due to the bigger, newer battery. Oh, and I nearly forgot - there is one other notable way of telling the PHV apart from the usual Prius: its rear lights are horizontal, not vertical. I think it looks better this way. On the move, the car is hushed, due to extra sound-deadening materials, and, when I did venture off the motorway onto Spanish rural routes, the Prius handled corners with barely any lean at all. This is down to retuned suspension springs and dampers. However, the tauter set-up means the car does bang and crash over potholes. Yet, back on smooth surfaces, the Toyota feels refined and, when using electric-only mode, I found the car almost silent. Only the whoosh of wind and tyre rumble disturbs the otherwise library-like calm in the cabin. Once I’d stopped hooning the PHV and started using the electric settings, I achieved a hybrid-mode fuel economy figure of 69mpg – which is better than many Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) will do. Alas, that’s only a tiny fraction – probably about 5mpg - better than you’d eke from a runof-the-mill Prius. It’s also hard to recommend this car over the regular Prius – due to its strict four-seater configuration and its shallower boot.

“What An Amazing Show”

T

HE second weekend in July is always something which the Friends of the Museum look forward to, as it brings together the annual Road Run and Classic Car Show. This year we were blessed with good weather on both days, which meant that we had an amazing turnout of over 240 classic vehicles for the show and 20 plus for the Road Run. The sheer variety of cars, some dating back to the early 1900s, plus a display of Ford Cortina 1600Es enjoying their 50th “birthday”, provided the hundreds of visitors much to enjoy on the day. Amongst the awards given out were Best Motorcycle, which went to Pete Brown’s 1956 Maico Mobil combination and Best Car to Peter Turvey’s “steamer”, a 1914 Stanley Model 607. Our thanks go to everyone who turned up on the day either as an exhibitor, visitor or trade stand. Special thanks must also go out to all of the volunteers who made the weekend possible. Finally, if you would like to see a short video of the show day, then go to the Museum’s Facebook page and scroll down the posts. Thanks to Mark Egan for providing it.

Everyone involved with the Museum is a volunteer and without their support the Museum could not operate. If you would like to get involved, please feel free to contact me at jakehall16@btinternet.com.. Alternatively, contact the Museum at the number below.

Another, and very important part of the show, was the prize draw for the Mazda MX5. And the winner of this very popular car, which had sold all of its tickets before the show started, was John Coughlan, who had purchased his winning ticket from the Shepton Mallet Classic Car show in June. He is seen above receiving the car from Friend’s Treasurer Dave Hunt. Many congratulations John and we hope you enjoy the car. And so on to this year’s car, which is the Ford Escort Cabriolet shown in the main picture. This is really superb little car, which we know will attract a lot of interest. It’s a very low mileage example, with a lively 1.8.engine and power hood. Tickets are available at the Museum, at the various shows we will be attending in the coming year and online at our website.

GARDENING

Honeysuckle by Rachael Leverton

I

KNOW Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it.

I grow it like clematis - I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require.

My father had one growing over an old tree in his garden. If you want to do the same I’d advise planting it near the extremity of the branch canopy rather than near the trunk where root competition will be fierce. Train the stems upwards along some garden twine into the branches and the result will be breathtaking.

Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground and grow slowly upwards until they find something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks or trees decorating them with spidery flowers and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up it’s toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think about the forest floor where it grows wild. And it likes its head in the sun to encourage prolific flowering.

78

near a bench, just so I can get the benefit of the scent when I sit there. I’m trying to establish one over the porch too. As it’s against a wall I am having to make sure that it receives enough water.

“Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground and grow slowly upwards until they find something around

which to twine”

Honeysuckle is not at all fussy about the support it needs. I have some growing over a pergola, and some over a wigwam in a border

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

There are lots of varieties to choose from. Our native honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum has early and late-flowering varieties and for scent they are difficult to beat. I do have a lovely Italian honeysuckle, Lonicera caprifolium, which was recommended to me by Alan Titchmarsh at a Gardeners World event many years ago. I wanted summer fragrance and I have not been disappointed with the great Mr. T’s suggestion. Now is actually a good time to buy a honeysuckle as you can conduct a scent test at the garden centre. Happy sniffing!

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Regular lawn mowing from £12 per visit

Fuchsia

Fuchsia can be grown outdoors in moist, fertile soil, and are ideally placed in flower borders and beds. Once planted they can often live for years with minimal care. Pendent flowers are borne from summer to autumn and trailing varieties are a useful addition to hanging baskets although Fuchsias prefer shade for the hottest part of the day and need to be watered daily.

01249 541010

GardenRoomChippenham.co.uk Commercial grass cutting services also available.

Best pruned in early or mid-Spring as new growth appears. Standard Fuchsias should be moved to a frost-free position during the winter months to protect the main stem from frost damage, regardless of hardiness.

FAITH MATTERS

Come and See... I

s there anyone in your life that makes you roll your eyes? For me, it is when I hear the name of certain people I know. As soon as I hear their name or sometimes when they leave for the room next door I roll my eyes. It’s not something that I am proud of because when I roll my eyes I’m conveying something to the world of what I really think and feel about that individual. It is a sign of contempt. I am sometimes in danger of writing people off. In the Bible there is a story of Jesus calling his first followers. One of those first followers was Nathanael. (John 1:43-51) He had a bad attitude, a head down, arms folded, eyes to the carpet kind of attitude. He had a problem with learning anything new in life. One day Philip (another of the first followers of Jesus) found Nathanael and told him that they had found the one Moses and the prophets had written about in the scriptures, and that he was the son of Joseph, from Nazareth. Nathanael responded, “Nazareth? Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Now this is the place in the story I imagine Nathanael rolling his eyes. Maybe he was a bit of a snob. Maybe he lived on the ‘right side’ of a cultural divide. It seems like Nazareth was not the place people were packing their bags to go to. I’m sure, like me, you know of places that have a bit of a reputation. Maybe you roll your eyes when you hear the name of someone who lives there. “Can anything good come from_______?” you say to yourself. In the story Nathanael struggles to believe that Philip could offer anything that might improve his life experience and help him become a better human being. But Philip responded with a beautiful invitation, ‘Come and see for yourself.’ So Nathanael did. On meeting Nathanael Jesus implied that he already knew him and said, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip spoke to you.” In those days the fig tree was considered a sacred place of prayer, study and meditation. A place of peace. It was as though Jesus was saying, not so much that he saw him with his own eyes sitting under the tree, but that he saw his thoughts and prayers and therefore understood his heart. Nathanael exclaimed, “Teacher! You are the Son of God, the King Of Israel!” It was an amazing confession of faith. And from that day on he became a follower of Jesus.

84

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2017

Where is your fig tree? I wonder if you, like me, have that place you take yourself off to, to be quiet, to reflect or even to pray. Perhaps it’s a place to escape from the pressures of life. It is in that place that Jesus sees our thoughts and prayers and comes along side us. It is the place that he can reveal himself to us if only we will let him. The invitation to ‘come and see’ who Jesus is, exists today as it did then. As a minister I have had people say to me that Christianity has nothing in it for them. But I believe in this world of brokenness and pain it has everything in it for them, otherwise I’d be wasting my time. There are many who view the Christian faith in the same way as Nathanael viewed Nazareth. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nazareth was the place of the underdog and it is heartening that Jesus had real connection with underdogs. Nazareth was the place of the losers and Jesus favoured the losers. In fact he can do very little with winners. A friend of mine who is a church pastor had a phone call from a man the other day asking if his church was a place where anyone was welcome on a Sunday. The answer has to be YES!. The church is a place where losers meet. The invitation is always there. Jesus says to you and me, “Come and see. Come and see who I am, what I have done, and what I can do for you”. Perhaps this Summer is the time to find a church near you and join them for worship one Sunday. All you will need to take with you is an openness to discover who Jesus really is. Come and See... Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net)

JO DEACON

I’m forever blowing bubbles! H AVE you ever wondered what it must be like to discover you’ve won the lottery? I bet you have. Me too!

Just imagine what you could do with a couple of million. Every house you have sighed over in a shiny magazine would be within your grasp. The inglenook fireplace, the indoor swimming pool. Even a smallish ice rink in the basement and an art studio in the welllit (turreted) corner gable end could be yours.

The white washed brick wall surrounding your own “secret garden” veggie plot, the hallway big enough to stand a Christmas tree in and bannisters you could entwine swathes of greenery through for the festive season. Open fireplaces in the cosy breakfast room and the master bedroom, and wide window seats in every room. An Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen with rows of copper pans and jugs , bowls and plates on the huge kitchen dresser, and oak floors with cheery “rag rugs” throughout the hallway and scullery. O what bliss to even dream about such a house. Then of course, there could be the “modern” minimalist house so favoured by many people today. The large, open-plan, airy home where there is no clutter or unnecessary pictures, ornaments or books to collect dust. Just one or two hugely expensive and “tastefully bland” paintings or prints to tell all guests to the new-build that the owners have wealth by the truck load! (Shame they have no taste though!!!) That kind of house would never be “home” to me. For one thing, I don’t “do” minimalist. Give me cosy clutter over neat and starkly-boring any day. I know Where I am with clutter. In fact I could clutter for Britain and bring home the gold medal if it were an Olympic sport! I have driven poor Fred crazy in the past with plants “attacking” him from their perches atop cupboards, on any available surface, or hanging from baskets near windows or in corners of the rooms.; (Corners I hasten to add that he never goes near – UNTIL I hang a basket or place a pot, then it’s one constant fight to stop him swiping at them as he bumps against them, playing merry-hell and cursing loudly as he bemoans the lack of head-room (right up against the window! In a corner BEHIND the television stand etc!) If we had a greenhouse, I swear he’d find some way of colliding with the blooms somehow! 86

O well! I take it that we – like Del Boy and Rodney are never going to be millionaires, so pipe dreams will stay just dreams, and we will have to carry one filling in the lottery numbers and keeping our fingers crossed like the rest of the great British hopefuls. Have any of you folk out there ever been in a spa tub – an outdoor one I mean? They are great fun and it is very relaxing and surreal to be immersed in warm water out under the stars, with a breeze blowing across your shoulders and stirring your hair, while the rest of you is wet, warm, and being gently pummelled by the jets under the water. We’ve only been in a spa once, when we had a week-end at Centre Parcs, and when the bubbles really got going, Fred had to put a hand on my head to stop me floating up off the seat that runs around the inside. I was light even then, and I couldn’t stay seated. Once the bubbles began, off I floated, asking rather loudly and setting the other bathers off laughing, “OK! Who had the baked beans for tea?” Lately, my son has put his house on the market, and he has a whirlpool bath in the family bathroom, so, knowing it would be a now-or-never chance, I asked him if I could “have a go in it” just once before the house was ready for viewing. To my joy he said I could, and armed with my sponge and towel, off I went for a relaxing hour amongst the bubbly jets. My arthritis and I were greatly looking forward to the new experience, and when the bath was ready, steaming invitingly, I slid under the warmth with a delighted sigh. Now, any of you out there who have been with me since “Deacon’s Doings” began, may recall the saga of my traumatic baby oil incident some years ago, resulting in me remaining in a rapidly cooling bath, too terrified to move due to the fact I had rather overdone the amount of oil I had poured into my bath. I never learn, do I? This time it was Olay foaming bath stuff! Sighing contentedly, I poured a generous (OK an OVER generous) dollop of the scented gell into the bath before I turned the jets on, and lay back, relaxing like a blissed out mermaid on wacky-baccy! I closed my eyes and hummed a little song to myself, then I suddenly became aware there was a weird tickling going on around my nostrils. Opening my eyes, I discovered I was in the centre of a “marshmallow” cavern. The bathroom light was filtering through the sparkly walls of the cavern, and it was warm and

rather magical, then I sneezed – and blew a hole through the cavern wall. Shooting upright in the water, I fought my way through the walls of airy floss, and when my head broke the surface, I turned off the jets and surveyed the scene around me with disbelief! The wall of bubbles was at least 18inches higher than the sides of the bath, and though it was as light and nebulous as a cloud, it proved impossible to shift. I tried putting it down the loo – but it remained sitting in the bowl, letting me add handfuls to it as though I was building a snowman, piling ever higher and refusing to go downwards. I climbed out of the bath, unable to locate my sponge without a mask and snorkel, and after getting dressed, toddled off downstairs. “That was lovely, and I would’ve stayed in it for hours, but ….!” I began. Jason grinned at me and Lou began to giggle. “But you put too much bubble bath in!” said my son matter-of-factly. “How did you know?” “Look in the mirror!” Lou laughed as they went up to inspect the bathroom. I looked in the mirror only to see a great pile of bubbles still on the top of my head, while from upstairs the sounds of laughter echoed round the bathroom. They told me later that you aren’t really supposed to use bubble bath in a spa or whirlpool bath! You learn something new every day, don’t you? They said I could have another “go” whenever I liked until the house was ready to be viewed, but somehow it had lost its allure! So there you go – no bubbles in my posh bathroom – should me and the lottery cash ever become better acquainted! From now on, it will be just me, a TINY bit of bubble bath in our humble tub, and a tin of baked beans for my tea beforehand! ............ Jo Deacon...@...2017 ............

should know what it is like as he is father to a child just like Jonah.

.........................................................................................

But it is also a story about an adult son trying to repair his relationship with his aging father. Geog is a Holocaust survivor and has kept his past hidden from Ben. It is his conversations with Jonah that allow him to open up and Ben has to come to terms with the fact that his father won’t open up to him. It would seem that Jonah, who has the least to say, will be the one that teaches the adults in his life to live, love, and forgive.

by Jem Lester

“I love you, Jonah, but sometimes I wish you had never been born.” For most parents this would be an unthinkable phrase to utter. But Ben is desperate. He doesn’t mean it, of course, but the thought is there, uttered only when his 10 year old son is asleep. Even if Jonah heard he wouldn’t say anything. Jonah doesn’t say anything. Jonah is non-verbal. He has autism. This is not your Rain Main depiction of autism where Jonah is a gifted child in at least one area. He has the mental age of a toddler and his parents have reached the end of the road. He is about to make the transition to secondary school and Ben and Emma are convinced that he would be better off in a residential specialist school. The local authority doesn’t agree and this is where the novel starts. Two parents battling to get the best for their son, and battling to communicate with each other. This is a brutally honest look at the highs and lows of parenting a child with autism. The author, Jem Lester,

Gladiator Boy vs The Raging Torrent by David Grimstone

......................................................................................... Decimus Rex, the hero of this series, was captured by slave-takers in Italy and taken to Rome to compete in the gladiator arena. Along with his cell-mates he is determined to escape and after a series of trials they manage to escape their captor Slavious Doom. But this is only the start of their troubles as they find themselves in one quest after another. This is the eighth book in the Gladiator Boy series and it leaps right in where the previous book left off. Decimus, Olu, Ruma, and Gladius are sailing across the seas to China to rescue their friend Teo. But when they arrive in Yelang they find none other than Slavious who challenges them to survive the water maze. This is a great series for young readers and this instalment is no exception. From attacks by Japanese Ninjas to a water filled maze with encroaching walls this is sure to be one that readers will not want to put down.

Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. Equity release may not be right for everyone. It may affect your entitlement to state benefits and will reduce the value of your estate. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Providus Financial Limited is registered in England and Wales, Registered Number 09594033.
