Ring out the Old, Ring in the New! On New Year’s Eve about 11.30 at night, if you were watching St Mary’s Church in Church Street, Calne you would have noticed shadowy figures walking towards the base of the tower and entering through a small door. These are the bell ringers. Up a spiral flight of 50 steps, then they emerge into the Ringing Chamber; the place where the bells are rung. 8 ropes hang down through holes in the ceiling and each one of these is attached to a bell. The bells are still further up, at the top of the tower. When the team has assembled they each stand by a rope and catch hold of the end, then grasp the fluffy, blue ‘sally’. ‘Look to, treble’s going, she’s gone’ is the traditional command, given by the ringer of the smallest bell to start the process of ringing the bells. The bells sound one at a time as the rope causes them to move on their wheels. The rope wraps around the wheel, the bell ringers pull the rope to draw the rope off the wheel and then to move the wheel in the opposite direction so that the rope wraps around the wheel again. Catch hold, pull, stretch, pull is the rhythm and each time a bell sounds the rope has been pulled again by the person holding it. In the time up until midnight the bells ring slowly, with one bell stopping every minute or so until the only sound left is that of the sonorous tenor (the largest and heaviest bell). The tenor bell tolls to announce the death of the old year and then . . . silence. The clock chimes cannot work when the bells are being rung so, at midnight it is the responsibility of the ringer of the tenor bell to sound the bell 12 times to mark the hour. Then all the other bells come in to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Through the tower windows the 6

fireworks can be seen cascading and all around is the sound of bells and explosions. The bells are quiet by 12.15am and the bell ringers go to their own parties or homes. In 2018 there will be some very special occasions celebrated by the ringing of bells –weddings, including a royal wedding, and the centenary of the end of World War One. Two of our bells have been ringing out for Sundays and occasions of all sorts since 1707 and we hope that they will continue to do so for many more years, but give a thought to the bell ringers when you hear the bells and envisage them working away to bring the traditional sound to our town. School children bury time capsule Churchill Retirement Living has marked the opening of its William Lodge development in Malmesbury by inviting local school children to help bury a time capsule on site. Pupils from Malmesbury CofE Primary School joined Owners from the Lodge to bury the time capsule, which they filled with a special handmade card signed by every pupil, music sheets from the school choir, as well as a collage of the school’s badge created by Year 5 pupils.

Village welcomes new Vicar The weather may have been wet and blustery, but a very warm welcome was waiting for Rev Linda Carter and her friends, as she was licensed by the Bishop of Ramsbury to her new ministry within the Marden Vale team, at Christchurch Derry Hill. Linda’s Curacy was in Broadstone near Poole, where she was involved with many aspects of community life including raising awareness of dementia, a school governor, safeguarding but her heart is in rural ministry. Rev Bob Kenway, Team Rector of the Calne Deanery said “I thank God that we have been able to find a new priest to join the Marden Vale team only six months after Ann Massey’s retirement at the end of June. I look forward to our working together within the benefice and creating opportunities for realising the great potential there is in our various congregations, for working as a team to support each other in reaching out to our different parish communities in the love of Christ.” Bob also said “For a recent Clergy conference, we were asked to bring a bottle of water from our parish. When we got there, we put all the bottles on a table. At the end of the day we grabbed a random bottle of water from about 250 – 300 to take home but it wasn’t until later that day that I read the label which said “water from the Broadstone Vicarage.” I got in contact with Linda to tell her that I’d picked up her bottle but imagine my surprise when she said that her bottle of water was from Calne! God’s work is certainly amazing.” 8

Jo Ridehalgh, regional marketing executive at Churchill Retirement Living, said: “We were delighted to host the children from Malmesbury CofE Primary School and were grateful for their help in making our time capsule extra special with their fantastic work. Our Owners enjoyed talking with the pupils, and we hope that some of the same children can return with their own families one day to see the capsule dug up.” Located on Gloucester Road, William Lodge is a collection of 26 one and two bedroom privately owned retirement apartments and shared facilities, designed exclusively for the over 60s. Apartments boast spacious rooms throughout and an ideal combination of design and functionality. The fully fitted, stylish kitchens include a built in fridge and freezer, hob and an oven, which is located at an easy-reach height. All of the properties benefit from illuminated light switches for added convenience. Owners also enjoy ultimate peace of mind from a fitted camera entry system for the highest level of security and a 24 hour emergency call system. Having a ball to aid Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new Airbase! SUPPORTERS of Wiltshire Air Ambulance raised an amazing amount - over £16,000 - at a ball for the charity’s new airbase at Semington. The sell-out Air Aid Ball, held at Wellington Barn, Calstone, on 11 November, had celebrity backing and entertainment included an auction, raffle and live band. The Master of Ceremonies was broadcaster Alan Dedicoat, an Ambassador for Wiltshire Air Ambulance and who is known as the ‘Voice of the Balls’ on the National Lottery draw TV programme. He was joined by Paul Martin, the presenter of BBC TV’s antiques programme Flog It!, who hosted the grand auction. Paul is also an Ambassador for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. There was eager bidding during the auction for lots including a trip on the Belmond British Pullman train, matchball sponsorship at Swindon Town Football Club, a VIP visit to the Royal Air Force aerobatic team The Red Arrows and for prizes provided by Wiltshire Air Ambulance Ambassadors - Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and sports stars Olympian Shelley Rudman, Champion Para-cyclist Lauren Booth and Paralympian Stephanie Millward.

Photo: dgsphotography.zenfolio.com A number of businesses, who are members of the charity’s 100 Club, attended the ball. Chris Lear, Chairman of Trustees at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who attended our Air Aid Ball or donated prizes for the auction and raffle. Thanks to their generosity the ball raised £16,495.50 for our Airbase Appeal, towards completing the building and equipping of our new airbase at Semington. Building work on the new airbase is progressing well, but we still need to raise a significant amount to complete this innovative project.” To donate to the Airbase Appeal and find out how to get involved go to www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk, text BASE17 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070, email hello@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk or call the charity team on 01380 739453. www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk
Nick, who attended the ball, donated signed memorabilia including drumsticks, while Shelley donated a personal training session. Lauren donated the opportunity for four people to ride with her at the Wales National Velodrome, where she is training in her bid to be selected for the Great Britain team to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Stephanie, who attended the ball, donated a swimming coaching session as well her signed autobiography. During the auction she gave an inspirational speech about how having Multiple Sclerosis did not stop her achieving Paralympic success. The guests gave a standing ovation to Tom Lonergan, who spoke about how Wiltshire Air Ambulance helped to save his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest at home in Marlborough last year. 10

Good Energy partners with the Eden Project One of the UK’s leading 100% renewable energy providers, Good Energy, announces a partnership with the Eden Project to deliver its first bespoke battery service solution. The battery will help the Eden Project to match their energy demand with supply and will deliver cost savings. This is the first venture by Good Energy into the battery storage market and marks a new strategic direction for the company, taking it one step closer to its purpose of powering a cleaner, greener future. Good Energy is uniquely positioned to help businesses achieve their sustainability goals as their own purpose led business was set up to combat the challenge of climate change. Good Energy’s model puts business at the heart of the solution, working closely with organizations to develop the right solution to meet their needs. Eden’s new battery, due to be installed in summer 2018, will be a combination of five x 50kW 'fridge-sized' battery units and a control centre. Eden plans to create a new exhibit to show its visitors how the battery works and the environmental and economic benefits it will provide. “We’re delighted to partner with our friends at the Eden Project to help them become the first commercial site of its kind, to harness renewables through battery storage. Our unique proposition makes battery storage commercially viable for the first time at this scale, and is a major breakthrough in reducing reliance on the National Grid and reaching our shared goal of a 100% renewable UK.” Dr. Randall Bowen, Director of Business Services at Good Energy. Peter Wroe, Finance Director at Eden Project, said: "Eden and Good Energy have developed a strong and mutually beneficial partnership and we're proud of the work we have done together. Eden is an educational charity so we are pleased to be showcasing this battery storage technology, building on our work with Good Energy on the groundbreaking Selectricity project. This is part of Eden’s ongoing efforts to demonstrate innovative and sustainable solutions to energy issues." Eden is already powered by local renewable energy via the Selectricity scheme, in which Good Energy is a partner. Selectricity enables businesses to choose the renewable generators who provide their energy. www.goodenergy.co.uk
Dr Andrew Murrison MP to be patron for local Wiltshire charity Local charity, Carer Support Wiltshire (CSW) are delighted to announce that Dr Andrew Murrison, Member of Parliament for South West Wiltshire will be their new patron. The charity supports unpaid carers in the county, offering advice, information and help for those looking after a family member, loved one or neighbour. It is estimated there are over 47,500 carers here in Wiltshire. Dr Murrison has a background in health and the armed services, retiring as a surgeon commander from the Navy in 2000 after 18 years of service. He was recalled to serve in 2003 in Iraq. A qualified doctor he has worked locally in Warminster as a GP and held posts for health in Government. He is the author of influential reports on healthcare for members of the Service community: ‘Fighting Fit’ and ‘A Better Deal for Military Amputees’ and has written on The Military Covenant. In 2011 he was appointed special representative for the First World War Centenary Commemorations. Earlier this year CSW set up the Armed Forces Family Support Project with funding from Royal British Legion. The project aims to help those carers with military connections to access services, funding and training. In his role of patron, Dr Murrison will work with CSW to help raise awareness of carers and the valuable contribution they make to the local community and economy. He said: “I am very pleased to be asked to help as Patron and delighted to do so. Carers make a huge, largely unsung and under-appreciated, contribution to society”. “We, and the carers we support welcome Dr Murrison as our patron,” said CSW Chief Executive, Catharine Hurford. “With his assistance we will be able to raise the profile of carers and caring and extend our reach as an organisation committed to ensuring the county’s carers are well supported. Carer Support Wiltshire is a local charity supporting carers in Wiltshire. www.carersinwiltshire.co.uk

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Chippenham’s Christmas in Colour Joe Pasquale takes centre stage in Chippenham Christmas has well and truly arrived in Chippenham after Chippenham’s Christmas in Colour – a two day festive extravaganza in the town centre by Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council, and with support from the Bristol Hippodrome, Awdry Bailey and Douglas, and Emery Gate Shopping Centre. Friday 24th November saw the town come to life with walkabout characters bouncing, dancing, hooping and strutting around the streets of Chippenham, free arts and crafts for children, and a beautiful artisan market in Chippenham’s oldest building, the Yelde Hall. There was a stage packed with local and headline entertainment, hosted by Heart FM’s Ben and Mel, and the classic Chippenham abseiling Santa, who came down from the very top of Chippenham Museum to the delight of the crowds below. The Mayor of Chippenham, Councillor Mary Norton said, “I was delighted to see so many people come to see Chippenham’s Christmas in Colour lights switch on event with entertainment for all the family including arts and crafts activities, which added to the festive atmosphere.” Local acts took to the stage to entertain the buzzing crowds before the town’s Christmas lights were officially turned on by the ever-entertaining Joe Pasquale who chatted to Ben and Mel on stage before encouraging the people of Chippenham to join him in a rendition of his famous (and potentially annoying) song! The lights went on, and the sky was filled with beautiful, bright fireworks to kick off the festive season in style. This year’s event was extended to two days with further street entertainment and the artisan market. The giant snow globe and glitter face painting, all free to the public, saw over 1,600 visits throughout the day, and Chippenham Street Pastors (Chippenham Connected’s chosen charity) were on hand to chat to the crowds throughout the day as well as collecting for the work they do in the town in the runup to Carols Around the Christmas Tree. Kathryn Crosweller from Chippenham Connected said, “It’s wonderful to be able to offer the town an event on this scale. We want everyone to love Chippenham as much as we do, and seeing so many people come to support their local Christmas light switch-on shows that community spirit is alive and well in Chippenham.” The event saw an increase in footfall of 11% on the previous year’s event, and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The Christmas season is now well underway in the town, and the Christmas in Colour event will stretch to Saturday 2nd December with the New Road Christmas Trail (more details can be found at www.chippenhamconnected.com). 14

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Late Night Christmas in Malmesbury Much-loved annual event Christmas Late Night Shopping in Malmesbury was back on Friday 1st December. Always a cosy, festive evening - residents came together to enjoy mulled wine, carols and heaps of Christmas spirit! The popular festive event was busier than ever. Providing a perfect magical evening for all the family. Starting at 6pm - residents from Malmesbury and nearby came along to take part in the festive fun. As temperatures dropped, visitors donned their hats and scarfs to browse around the High Street, take in the sparkle of Christmas lights, music and cheer. As the sounds of chatter and Christmas songs filled the high street, Malmesbury truly became a magical world of its own… Highlights included… A visit from Santa, children’s rides and a Christmas market in the Town Hall. Retailers opened with nibbles and mulled wine and of course, there was plenty of carol singing. Enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, Malmesbury’s Late Night Shopping always promises to be a fantastic opportunity for everyone to share in the Christmas spirit – and this year was no exception. The Malmesbury Late Night Christmas Shopping evening was kindly sponsored by The Old Bell in Malmesbury who were open for fireside cocktails, drinks and dinner. New General Manager Christophe Dumeige invited shoppers for a relaxing evening and to experience the delights created by his new Head Chef & Pastry Chef/Chocolatier. “Malmesbury’s Late Night Christmas Shopping event was a real success this year. Calne Parish Nursing started in January 2017 and the Parish Nurse Emma Colgrave has seen over 240 people, offered 56 sessions to the community of Calne, not including meetings with other groups and organisations within the town. It certainly has been a very busy and rewarding year. Additionally, we have managed to secure two grants and receive full accreditation for the service from Parish Nursing Ministries UK. Emma and team have held a weekly drop in clinic at the Methodist church, along with monthly arm chair exercises at Penn Court and in parallel; run a Life Matters group at The Free Church. Emma has also supported the parents at Tots and Dots with sound advice on all aspects of parenting and baby or child care. Often being an active listener and encouragement, the parents can feel happier in the new challenges they face. COMMUNITY NEWS
Citadel Hall celebrates 5th Anniversary
Business owner Rachel Terry is celebrating the fifth year of running The Citadel Hall, Chippenham’s most centrally located community venue.
Rachel chose to take on the former Salvation Army meeting place after failing to find a space for her belly-dancing group the Sahara Sisters in 2012.
Since then the Chippenham local has gone on to welcome a variety of exercise classes, conferences and exhibitions in the main hall as well as offering the space for family occasions and parties.
Walk of Life
Saturday 12th May 2018 Join The Forever Friends Appeal’s walking marathon, or 10 mile afternoon route, along the Kennet & Avon Canal and support patients and their families at the Royal United Hospitals Bath. Legendary Glastonbury festival founder Michael Eavis (CBE), will once again be opening the start of the walk’s epic 26.2 mile route at The Crown Inn in Bishops Cannings (near Devizes). The walk then heads along the canal through Bradford on Avon and finishes at the beautiful Holburne Museum in Bath. There is also a 10 mile route in the afternoon departing from Bradford on Avon. Open to both men and women, registration costs £20 and you can walk for a ward or department close to your heart or a major campaign – RUH Cancer Care or RNHRD & Therapies Centre. In return walkers will receive a t-shirt, medal, refreshments, lots of support along the way and hopefully some sunshine! Last year, the event sold out months in advance we recommend that you sign up early!. To book your place, visit www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk or call the Events Office on 01225 821535.
Rachel said: “At the time I’d found myself virtually unemployable because I suffer from fibromyalgia and ME. This meant some days I found it difficult to leave the house. The Citadel Hall offered an opportunity to run a business and cope with my condition. “That’s why my family have been amazed I’ve gone from being someone who found it difficult to hold down a job to setting up something new from scratch. I’m really rather proud of myself.
‘I started out with Roz Chandler who runs the Pilates Tuesday morning class. I’m really chuffed she’s still with me five years later. People know where we are now and are contacting me about classes too. It’s great that things have snowballed and we’re now becoming a venue which is recognised and visible in the town and beyond. The Hall has given Chippenham residents a wide range of classes and business opportunities. It’s equipped with everything an event planner, conference organiser or fitness teacher could need.”
New classes at the Citadel Hall currently include Thai Chi every Tuesday afternoon and from January 2018 The Rock Choir will be running from the hall for ages 14 and above. The Citadel Hall is situated next to the town centre’s Bath Road pay and display car park, where the hall has a loading bay. It is a ten-minute walk from the train station and most local bus services stop outside. Town centre amenities are in walking distance.
The exposed beam hall can hold between 80-100 people. There is also ‘The Snug’ which is a smaller alternative for informal meetings or can be used as a break-out space. A kitchen is available with fridge, microwave, kettle and crockery. The venue is available to hire as a flexible space for a variety of functions including exhibitions, coffee mornings, baby showers, christenings and funeral wakes.

You may have encountered this talented pair as they often appear as guests on The One Show and the popular BBC programmes Autumnwatch and Springwatch. It is not unusual to spot Lloyd on screen with one of his majestic eagles or falcons whilst Rose has gained much recognition for appearing with Sir David Attenborough while her Geese followed their speedboat for the Sky TV series ‘Conquests of the Sky’.
Our Life with Birds Leading Bird Experts Lloyd and Rose Buck embark on a UK Theatre Tour accompanied by some of their extraordinary feathered friends
of breeds at their farmstead near Bristol. They train their birds specially for filming on location and in studios and they are without a doubt the foremost experts at tracking birds and in-flight filming. Their magnificent avian family includes Lady & Moses the Peregrin Falcons, Ashley the Kestrel, Lily the Barn Owl, Ellie the Northern Goshawk, Tilly the Golden Eagle, Poppy the Pigeon and a large number of Starlings, Geese and Swans.
’The Bucks are remarkable people because when they do imprint, they form a bond they can’t break and it means those swans are with them for life’ Sir David Attenborough It’s not often you see birds flying in theatres but in 2018 audiences all over the country will get the chance! Leading bird experts Lloyd and Rose Buck will embark on their first theatre tour accompanied by some extraordinary feathered friends. This is a truly unique interactive experience not just for bird loving enthusiasts but also for anyone who relishes the opportunity to see birds rarely seen outside of their wild habitats. These special evenings will be lead by the Bucks and supported by their film footage as they share their insights, stories and experiences of their world with birds. It’s an event not to be missed. Lloyd and Rose are passionate about birds. They have devoted over twenty-five years of their lives to rearing and nurturing a wide variety 26
Looking after our birds is a not just our career and job, it is a lifestyle, as you have to be there for them seven days a week, but we love it". We describe ourselves as bird behaviorists and handlers, specialising in working with our birds for many TV and film sequences and because we always make sure the birds enjoy themselves we can get the best out of them without compromising their welfare" Lloyd Buck Our Life with Birds is at the Salisbury Arts Centre on February 2nd 2018 Tickets: 01722 321744 or visit: www.salisburyartscentre.co.uk. and Swindon Arts Centre on February 26th 2018. Between them Lloyd and Rose have been involved with over 100 different documentaries, drama productions and feature films such as the BBC’s Poldark, Top Gear, The Hollow Crown, and The Flying Engineer. Their birds have appeared in numerous productions for ITV, the National Geographic Channel, RTE in Ireland and CBS in America. They have worked with virtually every wildlife and natural history television star including Sir David Attenborough, Steve Backshall, Michaela Strachan, Chris Packham, and Kate Humble. The Bucks have also worked on a number of TV commercials and music videos and even a new film for Disney.

DANCE TO THE MUSIC
Ed Byrne
One of Strictly Come Dancing’s most popular professional couples return to the stage with a bang! Kristina Rihanoff is once again teaming up with Robin Windsor, in a show created by Kristina herself, called ‘DANCE TO THE MUSIC’. The shows starts in the 1920s and takes the audience through over 20 different dance styles - in two action packed hours! Showcasing favourites like the Charleston and the Quickstep, before paying homage to the delightful Fred and Ginger, with the American Smooth. The story also leads us through a touching dedication to World War Two, with the music of Glen Miller and The Andrews Sisters, before a trip Stateside with a brilliant Rock-n-Roll section influenced by the one and only Elvis Presley! The second half of the show is guaranteed to get your feet moving, visiting the funky Motown and Disco eras. If that wasn’t enough for you, the show includes some ingenious routines, with music by the legends Michael Jackson and Prince, including a spellbinding Rumba, performed by former ‘Strictly’ professional Oksana and Jonathan Platero, to the epic ‘Purple Rain’. The two phenomenal couples will be joined by four more professionals from the dance world, along with the vocal talents of X-Factor finalist Christopher Maloney and singer/songwriter Beth Sherburn. Expect other dance styles like the Viennese Waltz, the Salsa, the Paso Doble, the Argentine Tango, Tap, Breakdancing, Hip-Hop, Lindy Hop, plus loads more!
Ed returns to the road this year after a total sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run with his biggest ever tour to date and his brand new show called Spoiler Alert. He says; “I originally intended to call the show “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title “off-puttingly baffling”. In the show, Ed explores the thin line between righteous complaining and brat-like whining and asks, ‘are we right to be fed up, or are we spoiled?’ Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. Recognised as one of the finest observational comics in the industry, Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara O Briain filmed the follow up to their Big Adventure show for BBC2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay. Upcycling your old furniture by Linda Baker, Sassy Chic
Done well, upcycling allows a preloved piece of furniture to have a new lease of life for years to come. In the UK we produce about 31 million tonnes of waste and if we have the opportunity to upcycle to reduce the amount we send to landfill, then it makes sense to do what we can to reduce it, because fundamentally, there is nothing wrong with old furniture. Indeed, most of it is of excellent quality. Maybe you have a piece of furniture that belonged to grandparents/parents and holds fond memories but does not fit in with modern styling. Then why not consider painting it and bringing it into the 21st Century?
We, at Sassy Chic, can help you upcycle a piece of furniture. We stock Frenchic Furniture Paint, a chalk based paint, environmentally friendly and safe to use around children and animals. It can be used inside or outside, with no odour or need to stir, just open the tin and start painting. If you lack confidence then consider coming along to a workshop, designed to show you how to get the best out of the paint and create your own unique piece of furniture. Or you can contact us about taking on a commission to paint your own furniture for you! The dresser pictured is an old Ercol piece, which was a shiny brown finish. The top has been stripped back to reveal the beautiful elm wood and then finished in our amazing white wax. The rest of the dresser has been painted in Grey Pebble, one of the 45 gorgeous colours that we offer. Find us on Facebook or Instagram or pop into the shop and take a look at our range of Frenchic products. We also stock a range of lovely interior items and gift selection. Gift vouchers are also available.

Wessex Nordic Walking Nordic Walking has gained in popularity over recent years and is an activity which has its roots in cross country skiing. The walking was used as a training method by athletes out of season to keep their levels of fitness maintained. Ashley Sandy, runs her business Wessex Nordic Walking (partnered with Nordic Walks UK) in the North Wiltshire area within a 15 mile radius of Marlborough towards Swindon and Barbury Castle. She lived in Switzerland where she learned the technique 12 years ago setting up her own Wiltshire business as an instructor in 2015. Ashley, said: “Nordic Walking is not trekking where poles are used to rest or to stop someone from falling over. This is an activity which exercises 90 per cent of your body and helps you become fitter while maintaining good posture when walking. The poles are always behind the body while propelling you forward. It’s also a very social activity and you should always be able to talk to those exercising around you.” To find out more visit www.wessexnordicwalking.com or call Ashley on 07540 784959.
Ben Jackson Ben Jackson is a qualified personal trainer who has been working around the Malmesbury, Hullavington, Oaksey, areas for the last 14 years. Ben said: “My objective is that I want to support my clients to get the best possible results, and I really enjoy my job. It’s not a quick fix for me, I train with my clients at the same time, I don’t shout instructions from the sidelines, we do it together. At the moment my youngest client is 16 and my oldest is 75 and I work with both men and women.” To find out more visit www.exceedpersonaltraining. co.uk or call 07595 525844

St Mary’s School Sports Centre Taking your first steps outdoors in January can be tough. You’re feeling well and truly stuffed from turkey and minced pies, the weather is bitter cold and you simply can’t bear the thought of venturing out for a brisk walk or jog. Here are 5 tips from the team at St Mary’s School Sports Centre to help you this January: 1) Set yourself a goal – whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, have a goal in mind. Maybe a distance or event, no matter how small this is ideal motivation. 2) Make a playlist –energetic, upbeat tracks will help you take on those extra miles. 3) Find a great location – Wiltshire has an abundance of beautiful scenery. Research new areas and mix up your routes regularly. 4) Stay safe – dark mornings/ evenings can be intimidating. Go with a friend or take a torch. 5) Join a Club – St Mary’s School Sports Centre are re-launching their beginner and intermediate running clubs on the 10th January. Call 01249 857335 or visit www.runningandtriathlon.co.uk for more club information.
Have you thought about trying yoga? You could consider visiting the White Horse Business Centre at Roundway Hill in Devizes. It’s a purpose built centre created six years ago by Debby Wilkinson who has been teaching yoga in Wiltshire for 18 years. She couldn’t find suitable space for rent in and around the town so created her own. The centre offers a range of classes from beginners, to gentle and more advanced. There are a team of trainers who are qualified and established with a minimum of 500 hours’ training experience. Debby said: “Yoga is really a life style choice though it often starts with fitness. It’s about feeling better in your body and mind. Visualisation is a huge part of yoga which helps people access areas of their body that they haven’t met yet. We work with our breath, we work to keep our bodies strong and flexible but it’s done in a mindful way where the breath is not taken for granted.” More information from: www.whitehorseyoga.co.uk or call 01380 816844. Courtyard Clinic moves to Malmesbury Courtyard Clinic are moving to Malmesbury this winter, armed to motivate, strengthen and tackle injuries. Residents from the town and nearby can now look forward to specialised Physiotherapy services combined with Pilates. Providing a tailored and fascinating approach that focuses entirely on your lifestyle. And just in time … As we enter winter and tuck into festive food in front of the television – we’re reminded from World Osteoporosis Day which took place recently that our bone health is greatly affected from an inactive lifestyle. Core strengthening, a balanced lifestyle and physical exercise are key components to steer clear of these injuries. As Jo Roberts – Clinic Director at Courtyard Clinic states: ‘We’re really seeing a huge increase in physical complaints from the results of an inactive lifestyle - leading to injury, physical pain, and reduced mobility. This only gets worse in the winter months. As the colder weather approaches it’s now more vital that simple, effective lifestyle changes are adopted to reduce the likelihood of injury and improve quality of life. We can’t wait to move to Malmesbury and continue our journey. Your treatment isn’t defined from your first visit, we work with you to provide a bespoke program to alleviate physical pain, injuries and more.’

RUNNING & FITNESS COACH
When to give your body a break from running by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
R
UNNING can be uncomfortable, especially when you are just getting started, but it should never hurt. Aches and pains in the feet, ankles and shins are common among runners and, to be honest, most running injuries will go away in time. The best predictors of an injury are previous injuries so sometimes you need to think back, maybe you broke a leg or sprained an ankle as a child, this trauma can rear its head later in life, especially if you have just taken up running and have not exercised for a long time. We tend to lose our flexibility the older we get so it is so important to look after yourself once you start to take up running, especially as you increase your mileage. An important part of running is learning to recognise the warning signs of an injury early. Mild stiffness or tenderness that does not go away after a day or two’s rest or after the first few minutes of a run is one of the first signals. Ask yourself the following questions to see if you can determine the cause, it may be something very simple. Have you done anything different since you noticed your niggle? Are you doing too much too soon? Are you overtraining? Are you having enough rest? Are you warming up and cooling down every time you run? Do you need new trainers?
Unfortunately, no one is injuryproof but before you panic, wait to see if the pain resolves itself within ing & Fitness Coach 24 to 36 hours. If it does, and you Breathe Properly feel OK after your next run, that probably means you are good to ight, www.runverity.com go, however if you limp or notice first questions I am asked from new runners is a change in your running style, athe properly whilst running. If you are one of the need toworry stopit can and le who have thisyou problem, don’t be address the easily. issue as this can lead to long term
common cause of being out of breath when hich in some cases can lead to serious pain and/or at you could be running too fast too soon.

Here are my top tips for helping you have a comeback plan
1. Don't deny that you are injured, you must deal with it and accept your injury, but you may also experience some anger and depression and refuse to stop running. However, you will reach a point where the pain forces you to stop. You will be able to return to your training plan if you allow the healing process the time that it needs. 2. Stick to a routine, walk when you would have run, by sticking to your normal training routines you will still gain the psychological benefits of regular exercise.
damage that may mean you should stop running permanently. Running is hard as you don't see the results over night, it takes time, commitment and consistency but one of the things that running does teach you is to have patience. You have to be extra patient when you are injured and being injured forces this patience upon you. You may have to create a Plan B if you experience setbacks and that can be hard...especially if it seems that everyone else is doing so well. A week can seem like a lifetime...
4. Cross train so that you don't end up feeling lethargic and fat, go swimming, do yoga or Pilates, strength training to build up muscle strength, go biking, it will really help fill the void. 5. Most importantly return to running with realistic expectations, start slowly and build gradually, set goals and don't do too much, too soon with too little recovery.

New Year, New Food! Some ideas from North Wiltshire to try in the kitchen in the New Year
Vaughan’s Cookery School Do you want to spend more time cooking or learning new skills around food during 2018? There are many options to do so this in North Wiltshire. One might be to visit Vaughan’s Cookery School based on the Hopton Industrial Estate in Devizes which offers a range of classes and is an approved teaching centre for the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality. The teaching team is led by Peter Vaughan who had training in classical cuisine but also has an interest in food as fuel for the body, as well as pleasing the senses.
Rutts Lane Cider It’s not all about food in Wiltshire though – there are plenty of examples of local craft producer of drinks. One quite new business, based in West Lavington, is
He said: “Naturally balanced is our fundamental philosophy. Whether it’s catering for a special event or a cookery school class our passion for using good ingredients in the right balance is paramount.” Classes include ‘Beginners in the Kitchen’ and ‘Basic Bread Making’ through to competent cooks with ‘Cooking to Impress’ and ‘Dinner Party Desserts’. There are also sessions covering world cuisine including Moroccan, Indian, Thai and Spanish. For more information visit www.vaughanskitchen.co.uk or call 01380 530203.
Rutts Lane Cider set up by Vince Wakefield about 18 months ago. Vince has been making his own cider for a decade after years of being annoyed by how many apples were just rotting away. One year he made 600 litres and his wife pointed out he may not be able to consume that much. Vince, an electrician by trade, decided to go through the necessary steps to become a certified craft supplier of drink products and is now a member of the Wiltshire Farmers Markets and Artisans Association. He said: “I make real cider as opposed to industrial cider where as little as 25 per cent of the drink is real apple juice. Mine is 100 per cent real apple juice and I use a traditional way of making that cider.” Vince regularly attends farmers markets in Devizes, Royal Wootton Bassett and Bradford on Avon and will deliver free of charge on orders of £20 or more in the Devizes area. Rosie’s Relish & Pickle If you love pickles and chutneys you might want to consider the products created by Rosie Humphrey from Chippenham. Rosie’s Relish & Pickle was created in 2013 after Rosie took voluntary redundancy from her former role in leadership and management training. Rosie said: “I’d been making chutneys for many years from my allotment produce and giving it away to friends and family. Someone suggested turning it into a business and I did that using my skills from my former role.” Rosie is also a committee member on the Wiltshire Farmers Markets and Artisans Association and regularly takes stands at local shows. She is a regular in Devizes, supplies Allington Farm Shop in Chippenham and will also be taking part in the market over the lambing weekends at Wiltshire College Lackham in March. Her products can also be bought online by visiting www.rosiesrelishandpickle.co.uk or email info@rosiesrelishandpickle.co.uk
Elements for Life Anyone fancy chocolate? Have you heard of the Wiltshirebased company Elements for Life founded by Dan and Paula Knowlson which specialises in raw chocolate products. The business was created in 2010 after a chance remark by Paula about creating a raw chocolate kit – raw chocolate had been important in their lives as both of them believe in good nutrition. These products are free from dairy, gluten, soya and refined sugars. Within a few years the business had outgrown their home and they moved into a purpose-built facility just outside Bradford on Avon. Their products are available to order online and through wholesale stockists in the UK and they now export overseas. These products include raw chocolate kits and gifts; raw chocolate snacks and drinks; chocolate moulds and super food ingredients. This company has a strong ethos of sustainability and makes great efforts to use sustainable packaging and employs green practices within its processes. For more information visit www.elementsforlife.co.uk
LoveFood.UK You may want to eat more healthily but haven’t got the inclination – or the time – to produce healthier food yourself. There are alternatives locally if you care to do some research. Wiltshire cook and nutritional therapist Lucinda Bevan, based in Marlborough, runs LoveFood.UK and as well as classes – you can order some of her dishes to go. These include granola bars, brownies as well as salads, seasonal soups, dips, beetroot and lamb meatballs, veggie burgers and winter slaw. Lucinda said: “I’ve worked with food all of my life. Healthy does NOT mean tasteless or boring! Eat well to get well, stay well, lose or maintain weight and increase energy.” For more information visit www.lovefood.uk.com and if you wish to place an order email Lucinda@ lovefood.uk.com The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2018

All-day dining comes to the Shelburne Restaurant and Bar with Smoked Bone Marrow Butter (£14.50) and Surf & Turf featuring 4oz Fillet Steak with King Prawns and Garlic Butter (£23) appear among the ‘From The Grill’ choices.
Special offers running through to the end of February add to the flow of choices at stylish Bowood Hotel, surrounded by Bowood’s Capability Brown parkland.
A
fresh outlook for The Shelburne Restaurant & Bar is to be discovered as Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort (near Calne, Wiltshire). Opening up throughout the day, the appointment of new Head Chef, Alex Gibson, an easygoing menu that plays to the mood of the particular time of day and a sprucing up of its interiors all bring added energy to The Shelburne. Previously having only been open for Sunday (and Christmas) lunch, The Shelburne is now open all day seven days a week, all year round. Indeed, restaurant goers can visit from morning right through to the evening: from breakfast (from 7am) to brunch to lunch and from afternoon tea to cocktails and on to dinner (with last orders at 9.30pm). As The Shelburne Restaurant flows into its cocktail bar area - with additional smaller table seating and on into The Library, as well as offering further spots in which to eat or drink, the various sections 54
have their own particular character and mood. The fire will be lit in The Library when it’s chilly while in the warmer weather French windows open out to a wide terrace for outdoor eating and drinking along the whole expanse of The Shelburne Restaurant, Bar and Library. Looking out on to an expansive landscape, you may well spot passing deer! A visit to The Shelburne Restaurant & Bar is certainly a heightened experience with its complete sense of escape on the Bowood Estate. Having recently arrived at Bowood, Alex Gibson has put together menus that pull quick bites, classic dishes, sharing platters and finer dining choices comfortably alongside each other. Its ‘Main Meals’ section brings particular flair with dishes such as Butternut & Sage Risotto with Apple & Toasted Hazelnuts (£12.50); Pappardelle served either with Beef & Red Wine Ragu, Parmesan & Truffle or with Mushroom, Courgette & Tarragon Cream (both at £13); Turbot with Bacon & Clams, Parsley Pomme Purée (£23.50) and Catch of the Day (according to the Market Price). Inspired by Robert Adam’s 18th century Orangery that fronts Bowood House - just a mile from the 43-bedroom Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort - the curved sweep and French windows of The Shelburne captures a similar ‘indoors-outdoors‘ sense. Named after the 1st Earl of Shelburne (who purchased Bowood in 1754), the restaurant and its outdoor terrace look out towards a ha-ha and beyond to its captivating landscape of tree-lined, rolling green slopes within the western corner of Bowood’s Capability Brown Grade 1 listed parkland, spanning 2,000 acres. Having designed The Shelburne’s interiors and used fresh greens and smudgy blues to mirror this picturesque scene, Lady Lansdowne’s updates will reflect the more relaxed mood of the new menu. With The Shelburne Bar linking the restaurant and The Library, this open-plan layout adds to the informal nature of a Shelburne Restaurant visit. The Shelburne Restaurant now looks forward to welcoming locals and guests with lunchtime/daytime and dinner for two offers: A lunch/ daytime (until 7pm) menu will extend a 25% saving on food while a two-course dinner (food only) for two will be priced at £39. Subject to availability, table reservations must be made in advance, quoting SHELB25 and SHELB39 respectively, valid Monday-Friday until 28th February 2018 (excluding 12th - 16th February 2018). Boost your Microbes and stay well Are you feeling bloated and tired after the fun of Christmas? Could you do with a nutrition boost? A helping hand to start the new year as you mean to go on?
Microbz Director Jeff Allen says, “This health revolution is an exciting field and we are excited to be part of it. It is a dynamic new area of biology that is constantly evolving and so are we - to achieve the best product for the health of our customers.”
Your helping hand could come from a brewing facility in Spirthill near Calne – but it’s not creating a new beer; it’s bubbling a popular fermented probiotic crammed with beneficial bacteria that are hugely valuable to our digestion and to our immune systems. They are also powerful antioxidants.
Microbz makes Bio-Live, a range of fermented liquid probiotics which are designed to help you maintain a healthy gut. Microbes are easier to absorb in a liquid because they are active and live bacteria. Bio-Live is 100% natural with unique combinations of friendly microbial cultures plus herbs and minerals. All gluten free, dairy free and sugar free and packed full of antioxidants – they are formulated for your wellbeing.
We usually think of bacteria and alarm bells go off – Germs! Disease! Danger! But we are full of bacteria, both good and bad, and most of them are our friends. They help digestion and strengthen the immune system. They protect us from the effects of our polluted environment. And according to emerging research, they even affect our mood and mental health. We all have a microbiome – our own community of trillions of single cell living organisms – and as we look after it, it looks after us. If our microbiome gets out of balance through overindulgence, poor diet, infections, overuse of antibiotics or stress, then our health suffers. Good digestive health helps us fight off allergies and disease and that’s where a good liquid fermented probiotic can help.
Here’s what people say about using Bio-Live :
“I have always had sluggish bowels from years of infection and food poisoning issues. I knew my gut flora wasn’t right. After just 2 days, this product has allowed me to go regular again without problems. Liquid probiotic is the way to go. I tried capsules and nothing worked like this. I take 2 tablespoons before bed to let the bacteria work without interruption.”
Stephanie, Amazon
“I have suffered with digestion problems now for a couple of years. A while ago a friend of mine suggested I try your product, it’s so good!!! Results straight away. I am a Natural Therapist and I recommend your products to all my clients.”

You can make up a hefty batch of this in one go and add it to soups, casseroles or simply drink it from a mug for perfect gut-healing health. This recipe is not your regular stock - it’s packed with minerals and healing properties that will kick start your new year diet. Method 1. Preheat oven to 200c and line a baking sheet with foil. Place the bones on the sheet and roast for 40 minutes. Flip them halfway through. 2. Once they’re cooked, break them down and place in a large stockpot. Cover with the water and vinegar and allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. 3. Add the chopped vegetables and add to the stockpot. Bring to a rolling boil and then lower to a simmer. 4. For the first 2-3 hours make sure you skim off any foamy layer that develops on the top and discard.

6. Allow to cool slightly and strain. 7. Transfer the broth to an airtight container and refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight. This will allow the fat to rise to the top and solidify. 8. Scrape the fat off the top with a spoon. This will leave you with a gelatinous bone broth when cold. 9. Store in an airtight mason jar or freeze until ready to use then slowly warm the broth over a low heat or drop straight into soups and casseroles.
Overnight Oats
Have you made healthier eating a part of your New Year plan? If so you should definitely try this healthy, hearty breakfast. A friend introduced me to overnight oats and I have to say I’m hooked. First, it’s the easiest breakfast ever. There’s nothing to cook; you make it the night before in under 5 minutes, and when you wake up, it’s there waiting. All you have to do is eat it! The basic recipe is very adaptable; you can do so many different things with it. I tend to eat mine cold but if you like things hot, heat them up in the microwave Oats help to reduce cholesterol and are a whole, unprocessed source of carbohydrates, which release energy slowly so are a great start to the day.
BASIC OVERNIGHT OATS
VARIATIONS:
Ingredients
Fruit: apples, banana, nectarines, blueberries, strawberries, figs, redcurrants (most fruits taste great).
1/2 cup dry oats (the actual cup size doesn’t really matter. It’s about proportions… just use a bigger cup if you have a bigger appetite) 1 cup of unsweetened milk (I like almond milk but cows’ milk, soya milk, plain yoghurt or a mix of yoghurt and milk is all good) Fruit of choice (fresh, frozen or even tinned) 1 tbsp chia seeds or flax seeds (optional but good for healthy omega 3 fats) Nuts (optional)
Sweeteners: If you have a sweet tooth you can add maple syrup, honey or jam. My kids experimented with chocolate milk too – lovely with bananas. Healthy fats: flax, nuts, nut butters
Method 1. Combine everything into an airtight bowl or jar (I leave nuts out as I like them crunchy) 2. Leave in the fridge overnight
Flavourings: flaked or desiccated coconut, ground almonds.
Toppings to add in the morning: granola, nuts, raisins, sour cherries, additional fruit, chocolate chunks
3. Eat in the morning! You can heat them if you like.

Ditch the Detox and Diet in 2018 It’s that time of year when we’ve all had a lot to eat, drink and we’ve been merry and the detox and diet advertisements pop up on tv and social media in their thousands. We’re bombarded with messages about losing weight, getting slimmer and in shape. Nutritional therapist Helen Adams, of Oakmead Clinic, has some strong advice though – just ditch the detox and the diet and remember it should be about feeling good, not feeling deprived. “Having this green juice or that ready-made meal and basically starving yourself silly is not the answer. You will lose weight initially but you probably cannot wait for your ‘diet’ to end and then you’ll pile the weight all back on over time, sometimes very quickly,” Helen said. Christmas and New Year cover a period of time, Helen said, when we can load up on alcohol and carbohydrates and this puts a heavy load on the liver. “Think of the liver like passport control in an airport. You have to stand in the right queue and there are a finite number of booths and staff and the staff have to sort out the food into the right queues and the more work it has to do, the longer it takes to sort out. The more passengers there are, the longer the queue, the longer the wait. This means you can feel sluggish and slow.” Another reason, she explains, is that the lymph system which runs alongside the blood system is the body’s ‘super highway’ for getting rid of the rubbish – whether that’s toxins from our food or bits of broken blood cells. However, it only works via gravity and the movement of our muscles next to it and if we’re sitting down a lot, the movement of that rubbish is slow. Signs we’ve eaten too much and given our livers and lymph systems a lot of work to do include: • fatigue • headaches • brain fog, not being able to think straight
Tips to deal with this over the new year and in the few weeks after include: Tip One: Move – this helps the system work properly. A gentle walk after a heavy meal helps get the systems moving or, if you have a mini trampoline, bounce for about five minutes even while watching television. Tip Two: Eat some foods which help the liver including: • garlic & onions • broccoli & cauliflower • sprouts • some fruits such as apricots & kiwi • some vegetables such as peppers, beetroot, carrots and pumpkin. • leafy greens such as spinach. Tip Three: Drink regularly – but choose wisely. Good drinks are water and herbal teas. Tip Four: Brush your skin – the skin is the body’s biggest organ but gets forgotten. Using a dry skin brush (available from many outlets) before a shower and brush it in strokes towards the heart. This brings fluid to the surface which brings toxins with it.
You know when your body is recovering when the brain fog lifts and you start to feel more energised. Anyone interested in talking to Helen about adopting a healthier eating strategy to feel good and lose weight naturally, can book a 30-minute free discovery consultation via the website – www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk or email helen@oakmeadclinic.co.uk

Today she lives with her husband Tom in Avebury and as well as being a professional artist, she runs mobile slate painting workshops for groups, individuals or parties – where she can come to you. Kerry said: “This type of painting is very social, it’s great fun and I run workshops for groups including the WI, for parties or groups of individuals who want to try their hand at painting with a new medium. I got into painting on slate when I saw a slate which had patterning on it which looked just like Stonehenge. As the roof was being replaced, I asked if I could have it and paint over it. That’s where it all began.” To find out more about her workshops and her art at www.kerrymckennaslates.com or call Kerry on 01672 539190.

She also works with people who are morbidly obese to take the small steps with food towards a new way of eating you can keep for life. She said: “It’s not about calorie counting, it’s about understanding how to eat delicious food, and then best way to balance your blood sugar so you don’t have cravings, you don’t feel bloated and horrible and the weight will gradually come off.” For further information visit www.oakmeadclinic. co.uk or call Helen on 07799 431612.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Hypnotherapy and Weight Loss If you have never tried hypnotherapy before then you may be wondering what it is and how it can help you lose weight?
I have helped many people gain control of their eating behaviour, pushing away their negative learnt behaviour and concentrating on the positive.
Hypnotherapy is a trance like state that can alter the way the subconscious mind reacts to certain situations. Enabling the individual to change a learnt behaviour in this case either eating the wrong foods or eating too much or both. I invite you to come for a free 30-minute initial consultation; you sit in a comfy chair and allow yourself to relax listening to my voice. You are not asleep and you are in control in a safe environment.
For example if you love chocolate and no matter how much you try you just can’t resist picking or buying another bar (conscious awareness).
Hypnotherapy can reach your subconscious mind and make you more aware of your actions.
GET 10% OFF YOUR FIRST SESSION WHEN YOU MENTION THE TOWN CRIER
So you reach for the chocolate bar (conscious behaviour) and after hypnotherapy after I have planted positive suggestions into your subconscious mind you will start to question your reason for reaching for that chocolate bar
Are you really hungry?
How will you feel if you eat the chocolate?
Is it worth the feelings of guilt after eating the chocolate?

Will you feel low because yet again you have given in to your greed?
Just imagine how you will feel when you have achieved your goal?
Is it worth eating the chocolate when it will take two minutes to eat but you know you will spend the next day beating yourself up because yet again you have failed in your attempt to lose weight?
Of course hypnotherapy will only work if you really want to lose weight and be healthier. Sometimes other people can sabotage your efforts by buying you cake or treats after all they don’t want you to change they like you as you are. Will you be more attractive to someone else if you lose weight? or you can sabotage your own efforts by continuing to comfort eat for other reasons which will only change when you have found the root cause of the problem. Clients can come along to therapy to lose weight but then they realise that there is a deeper issue to be resolved.
My therapy room is at The Stables, Fishers Brook Calne Wiltshire SN11 9HB. I offer a Free 30 minute initial consultation and for January 2018 you can have 10% off your first session if you mention my ad in the Town Crier. Each session is for 50 minutes at a charge of £60 after the initial 30-minute free initial consultation. Appointments by prior arrangement.

Support your Wellbeing with Reflexology
!
Yvette Baker MAR, MFHT, owner of Harmony Holistics, says “after the excesses of Christmas and New Year it seems timely to purge our bodies, eat healthily, exercise like mad to lose a few pounds and generally punish ourselves for our over indulgence. Whilst these are noble ideas our bodies also need nurturing support. Reflexology offers this in a noninvasive, relaxing and therapeutic way. It promotes good health and wellbeing and is ideal to add to your New Year’s health intentions. Tiredness, irritability, feeling cold, fed-up and facing a difficult commute to work can all heighten our stress levels. Stress in itself isn’t bad for us, but too much over too long can lead to chronic health problems. Reflexology facilitates healing within your body, boosts your immune system, relieves pain, and generally helps when you’re feeling out of sorts.

I take a confidential medical history which helps me create an appropriate treatment plan. You are then invited to lie on a heated couch where you are covered with a blanket and can drift off into a restful sleep. After the treatment we discuss my findings.”

Making Travel Accessible My name is Marc Fitchett, a Personal Travel Counsellor. Who do you know that loves travel but feels restricted because they have additional requirements? I offer a bespoke, caring and genuinely personal travel planning and booking service, which means that wherever you want to go in the world and whatever your requirements might be, realising your travel dreams is now just a phone call away. Of course to create wonderful journeys for others, having a personal passion for travel is crucial. And I do! I love to experience different countries and cultures and get so excited about planning my own trips and then the countdown begins. I am sure it is normal to start the holiday countdown at over 100 days! I love every aspect of planning and preparing for a holiday - well nearly everything, I don’t know about you, but I hate packing! The travel bug took a bite at an early age and have I been very lucky to visit and experience so many different places and cultures. And I love sharing my knowledge with customers, treasuring the fact that my job allows me to create the same excitement for others. Indeed, for everyone! I am passionate about creating holiday and travel opportunities for all. I am passionate about equality and inclusivity and making what might seem impossible journey, a reality. accessible journeys by air, sea and land, close to home or on a distant shore, adventurous or relaxed, just waiting to be discovered – and I can help you or someone you know, make them! Of course, planning and preparing for travel can be daunting for anyone. Even more so when critical additional requirements cannot be met through online or high street travel agencies. And in many cases they can’t. So, my personal, tailored holiday and travel arranging service is the perfect port of call for everything you might ever need, including flights, cruise ships, trains, insurance, vehicle rentals, accessible hotels, apartments and villas, mobility equipment, adapted transport and more. Your one-stop travel expert ready and waiting help plan, arrange and book holidays and travels that are truly memorable and unique. And from the first moment we speak - a pleasant and stress free journey. So how to achieve this? Well a good starting point would be to create a checklist to ensure you are being asked the right questions by your travel organiser and you should also be armed with a list of important questions that you should be asking them. Questions your travel organiser should be asking you · Where would you like to go? · When would you like to go and for how long? · Best UK departure airport or cruise port for you? · Who will be travelling (Adults/children and their ages) · Details of party member/s with additional requirements to include: - Nature of condition (e.g. amputee) - Details of any mobility aids to include - Prosthetics and how they may be carried if not worn during journey - Wheelchair make and model/height/length/width/ weight - For powered wheelchairs – battery type and if Lithium-ion, its wattage per hour - Type of assistance you may require at the airport/ cruise port/station. E.g. wheelchair, airport buggy, use of ambulift to aircraft door (to avoid steps), carry-on to seat using special chair designed to access aircraft aisle - Boarding and in-flight requirements – aisle chair/ cabin class - Accommodation requirements – villa/hotel/ apartment/cruise cabin - Bathroom requirements – wet-room/grab rails/bath with seat etc. - Mobility aids? Hoist/profiling bed/shower chair? - Any additional requirements that I should know about?
Questions you should be asking: · Am I always able to speak with the same person during the planning and booking process? · Are all of my monies 100% financially protected (if not they should be!)? · Can you provide 24/7 support whilst I am away? And understanding your responsibilities: · Inoculations - Check with your GP · Acquiring relevant visas and travel authorisations · Ensuring your passport is valid for chosen destination There is lots to do and consider but with a world of exciting travel opportunities just waiting for you to explore, your planning and preparation will ensure you have the holiday you deserve. As your own personal Travel Counsellor I can provide you with the perfect holiday that meets your travel dreams and of course you specific access and mobility requirements, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01249 848510 or drop me an email marc. fitchettt@travelcounsellors.com and lets together make holiday memories which will last a life time.

Weight Control in Dogs Dr Oliver Taylor BVM BVS MRCVS
www.georgevetgroup.co.uk The George Veterinary Hospital, Malmesbury 01666 823165 The George Veterinary Group, Royal Wootton Bassett 01793 852458 As we recover from the excesses of Christmas, many of us will have considered weight loss and dieting as part of our New Year resolutions. As more than 60% of the UK dog population is overweight (British Veterinary Association), it’s a timely opportunity to discuss obesity and weight management of our furry friends too. As with humans, obesity in dogs has been proven to have severe health implications which can reduce their quality of life. Not only can it exacerbate joint disease, heart issues and cause diabetes, but it can also make more difficult what we, as vets, would consider otherwise routine general anaesthetics and surgeries, and therefore more risky. In the veterinary profession, we use a scale from 1-5 to judge a dog’s body condition. A common misconception is that a dog’s condition can be judged simply by its weight. However, dogs can be many shapes and sizes depending on the breed and so a more accurate judgement of body condition score has been created to measure a number of factors including prominence of ribs, waistline and tummy tuck.
Judging correct body condition score Score from 1-5 Very thin – Ribs very prominent and easily felt with no fat cover Underweight – Ribs can be visualised and are raised to the touch with backbone and hip bones just visible Ideal weight – Ribs are visible and easily felt with a noticeable tummy tuck. Overweight – Ribs are not visible but can be felt. Minor tummy tuck Obese – Ribs are impossible to feel, no waistline and tummy bulges outwards/downwards There is some breed variation with what body condition score is ideal - for example, a Greyhound or Lurcher would preferably be between 2 and 3, whereas a Labrador would ideally be BCS 3.
Tips for weight loss A strategy to lower your dog’s body condition score can be split into three approaches: diet, exercise and regular monitoring.
Diet When trying to regulate the diet, it is very important to maintain consistency. Ideally, your dog will be fed the same amount at similar times by the same person each day. This will help reduce the variability in the amount of food given and reduce the chance of feeding twice! Weighing food helps to guarantee consistency whilst allowing for fine adjustments to the daily food intake to ensure that you can safely and consistently reduce feed intake (it is advisable not to reduce quantity of diet by more than 20% a month). 72

Try to cut out leftovers and unhealthy “treats” from your dog’s diet. Instead, introduce crunchy vegetables, such as carrots or cucumber as a healthier treat. If feeding a dry diet, you can set aside a small portion of their daily allowance to use as treats throughout the day.

Regular Monitoring When putting your dog on a diet, it is always a good idea to keep an accurate and up-to date record of its weight. This ensures you have an accurate record of weight loss and you are tracking any progress to that end. Please feel free to call in and use the weighing scales at any of our surgeries. WILDLIFE
The Big Garden Birdwatch
T
HE Big Garden Birdwatch is world’s largest garden wildlife survey, and 2018 will mark its 39th year. It is run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and will take place on 27th, 28th and 29th January 2018. All we have to do is spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in our garden or a local green space. Then we send our results to the RSPB. Close to half-a- million people joined in last year counting more than eight million birds and providing valuable information about the wildlife using our gardens in winter. We’re all familiar with the sight of bluetits on a bird feeder or a cheery robin hunting for grubs but it might come as a shock to know that some of our most-loved species are in desperate need of our help because their numbers have dropped dramatically. Species such as starlings and greenfinches have seen their numbers decline by 79 and 59 per cent respectively since the first Birdwatch in 1979. 40 years worth of data allows the RSPB to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are
Blue Tit The blue tit is a colourful bird seen in the midst of winter and they are perhaps the most recognisable garden visitor. Families join up to find food during the cold spell – one garden feeder with four or five blue tits at any one time may actually be feeding 20 birds or more. In the summer time watch out for the youngsters who have yellow instead of white cheeks.
faring, and what potential issues they might be facing. With results from so many gardens, they are able to create a snapshot of the visiting birds at this time of year across the UK. So even if you see nothing at all during your Big Garden Birdwatch hour, that’s important information too! The RSPB also asks participants to log some of the other wildlife they have seen throughout the year. In 2018 people are being asked to look out for badgers, foxes, grey squirrels, red squirrels, muntjac deer, roe deer, frogs and toads. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2018, participants should watch the birds in the garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three allocated days. Only the birds that land in the garden or local park should be counted, don’t count those just flying over. There is also a parallel event; Big Schools’ Birdwatch takes place which takes place during the period 2nd January-23rd February 2018. Further information about this can be found at www.rspb.org.uk/ schoolswatch Both the Big Garden Birdwatch and the Big Schools’ Birdwatch are part of the RSPB Giving Nature a Home campaign. This is aimed at tackling the habitat-crisis facing the UK’s wildlife. The charity is asking people to provide a place for wildlife in their gardens or outdoor spaces: this could involve putting up a nest box for birds, creating a pond for frogs, or building a home for hedgehogs. There is a free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, which includes a bird identification chart, plus advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden. Text BIRD to 70030 or visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch.

London to Brighton The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run takes place in November. We take a look at the world’s longest running motoring event. In these days of motorway mayhem and congestion charges it’s difficult to imagine a time when owning a car was considered daring, a little eccentric and beyond the wildest dreams of most British people. When Jean-Joseph Etienne Lenoir patented the internal combustion engine in 1860 he paved the way for the development of the modern motor car. Initially progress was slow ... literally. The Government passed The Red Flag Act in 1865. Section 3 of this act required that one person had to walk 60 yards ahead of the vehicle and that he should wave a small red flag to warn others that a car was approaching. This meant that the speed of the new motor cars was reduced to 4mph in the countryside and just 2mph in town. Unsurprisingly this legislation stifled the progress of the motor industry for many years. In 1896 after much discussion The Locomotives on Highways Act was passed which did away with the need for the flag waver. It is estimated that at the time of the first Rally there were only around a hundred cars in Britain. 33 cars took part in the original run but only fourteen made it to Brighton. Part of the problem was the weather which was dreadful. Rain poured down and the roads became sodden and muddy. The rally has run every year since with the exception of the war years when petrol was rationed. It is one of Britain’s biggest motoring spectacles and attracts entrants from all over the world. Only cars built before January 1st 1905 are eligible to enter and last year 490 of them were registered for the run, 85 of them from countries as far away as China, the USA and Australia. Plant hire company welcomes new team member The appointment comes at a time when the company are continuing to grow. MD Stuart Morgan said: “We’ve been incredibly busy this year. It became clear to us there was a full time position for someone with experience in driving and delivering machinery. We also needed someone happy to maintain the plant. “We’re delighted to welcome Chris, he has fitted in. He is a problem solver and just gets on with it. He really can turn his hand to anything.” Chris was born in Oxfordshire and moved to Swindon four years ago. The father of four who lives with his partner, said: “When I saw the position advertised, I knew it was the job for me. I researched the company and really liked what they’re doing and where they are going. It’s not just driving, but also maintenance of the machinery. I love getting stuck in and prefer working outdoors.”
E
XPERIENCED driver Chris Bricknell has become the latest member of the team at Tiger Plant, one of the leading plant hire companies in Wiltshire. Chris, 29, who previously worked for a road traffic collision recovery company, has been hired as a driver and plant fitter for the business which has its HQ at the Clearwater Business Park, Swindon. Tiger Plant has grown rapidly during its first year of trading. Owners Stuart Morgan and Andy Rohrer, who already work together as property developers and builders, created Tiger Plant when they realised one of the recurring issues on their building sites was getting the right plant to the right place at the right time.
The team at Tiger plant offers over a dozen different types of plant machinery. The range of plant on offer includes micro diggers, a selection of midi diggers and larger diggers up to 20 tonnes. Also available for hire are telescopic and masted forklifts, dumper trucks, fuel bowsers and compaction machines. The machines can be hired by a homeowner with smaller building works right through to those who are managing or running large commercial projects. Plant can be hired out across Wiltshire and the surrounding counties and, for larger projects, trained drivers can also be supplied. To discuss any job – large or small, domestic or commercial, feel free to get in touch by calling 01793 886444 or emailing info@tigerplant.co.uk For more information visit www.tigerplant.co.uk

GARDENING
Winter-Flowering Shrubs by Rachael Leverton
S
NIFF! SNIFF! No I don’t have a cold but this month I will be sniffing a lot. Mainly because of my winter-flowering shrubs.
Every garden should have a couple of plants which bravely open their petals while winter is doing its worst. Viburnum farreri or Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ or ‘Deben’ are upright shrubs which bear pretty clusters of pink-buds on their bare branches, that open into honey-scented white flowers. They are incredibly tough, withstanding all but the harshest of frost. It’s lovely to cut a few sprigs to stand in a jam jar indoors. My favourite winter flowering shrub is the witch hazel plant Hamamelis mollis. It’s a delightful shuttlecockshaped bush that explodes with citrus-scented spidery flowers right about now. I have the orange ‘Jelena’ in my garden but the pale yellow ‘Pallida’ and the deep red ‘Ruby Glow’ are equally lovely. My dad had a wonderful winter-flowering honeysuckle in his garden: Lonicera fragrantissima, which I adored. A few years ago I discovered Lonicera x purpussi and fell in love. It has creamy white flowers and a really strong scent. 80
The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2018
Even if you have a tiny garden you’ll have room for a Christmas Box Sarcococca confusa. It produces white whiskery flowers from among its dark shiny evergreen foliage. I have two in pots on either side of my path and I’ve had people stop in their tracks and return back towards the house sniffing, in search of the source of the amazing sweet, heady scent. And don’t forget that there are scented snowdrops and tiny Iris reticulata which are deliciously perfumed too. Time to get sniffing. Happy gardening.

GARDENING
Watering and Wellies JANUARY JOBS • Plant a bare root tree. These are often cheaper than trees in a pot and this is a good time of year to plant an ornamental or fruit tree. • Plan your crops for the year. Look back on your notes to see what you planted where and what worked well.
TOP TIP
• Sew lettuces indoors. • Try growing a winter flowering clematis if you think your garden is looking a little bare. • Plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots ready for a stunning spring display. • Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch. • Keep putting out food and water for the birds.

FAITH MATTERS
The Stuff that
Really Matters M
y father is 88 years old. Out of the blue last year he decided to have new flooring put down throughout his three bedroom house. I’m not sure that he had thought the idea through very well. It meant that everything at some point would need to be moved. Every cupboard and wardrobe emptied, every drawer sorted through. After the men had laid all the flooring my father said that he was worn out, to which I responded, “Well, it was a bit like moving house wasn’t it?” In the sorting out there were lots of things that he no longer needed. Some of the stuff was thrown away and some was taken to the charity shop in the hope that someone else might find it useful. I bet there were things that were of importance to him that he decided to keep. Like objects his children made at school many years ago, or old photographs and letters and cards. All this made me think about the mountain of stuff in my house that I don’t need and all that’s of value to me. I wonder whether as a nation most of us have reached peak stuff. So there is more of a challenge and more status to be gained in the decluttering than in the acquiring. There’s a word in Swedish for decluttering. Döstädning is a combination of the Swedish words for death and cleaning. The first time I heard the term, I thought it meant some kind of hardcore Scandinavian house cleaning routine, where you scour your home from top to bottom to the point of physical collapse, as in “working yourself to the bone.” Döstädning actually refers to the act of slowly and steadily decluttering as the years go by, ideally beginning in your fifties (or at any point in life) and going until the day you die. The ultimate purpose of death cleaning is to minimize the amount of stuff, especially meaningless clutter, that you leave behind for others
84
The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2018
to deal with. Margareta Magnusson has written a book about it, titled “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning” She says that is isn't really about death but rather about the story of life, your life, the good memories and the bad. The good ones you keep, the bad you wipe out. At the beginning of the year we are all decluttering as we take down the Christmas decorations and pack them up in boxes for another year. I like to use the beginning of the year to declutter. Not my house, (although that could do with some döstädning), but my mind. It’s a time to look back and reflect on last year; the highs and the lows. Most importantly for me as I reflect I take note of where I can see that God was at work in my life and also when he wasn’t and why. One clutters up ones life with so many competing priorities. Where I cannot perceive God at work is usually because he wasn’t my first priority but way down my list. We have just celebrated one of the major Christian festivals, remembering when Jesus was born for us so that we might know of God’s rescue and love. When Jesus becomes my number one priority it changes everything; the way I look at the past, the present, and the future. You start to see the world differently. Like döstädning it's a lifetimes work. It helps one to declutter one’s mind and focus on what’s really important; living out Jesus’ priorities of making a better world, respecting one another, forgiving each other, and living with hearts full of thankfulness, hope and love. Wishing you God’s blessings for 2018 Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

BOOKS
A Good Read
Clown
by Quentin Blake
......................................................................................... Can you tell a story without words? Well, Quentin Blake can, and in Clown he does.
The Earth Hums in B Flat
The book consists entirely of illustrations, in Blake’s well loved and instantly recognisable style. Our hero, Clown, finds himself thrown into the dustbin, along with a number of other toys. He escapes, dusts himself off, and sets out to find someone who can help him to rescue his friends. Along the way he finds himself in a fancy dress competition, entertaining a rather fierce looking dog, and possibly finding himself a home – all without words.
.........................................................................................
The beauty of the story is that while Blake’s illustrations carry the narrative forward, the reader can choose their own way of telling it. No two versions are ever the same, as each child brings to the book their own language and rhythms. Clown himself is wonderfully expressive, and the pictures are enough to have you laughing out loud in several places. An absolutely marvellous book, which every child should read – and which every adult will enjoy too. This first novel (and first in a trilogy) is a fascinating read. Spread throughout the book are authentic photos collected by the author which are weaved into

the story. Definitely one for older readers (marketed as young adult and rightly so) this original story will have you reaching for book two immediately.
The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2018
by Mari Strachan
Gwenni Morgan is twelve, and every night she flies in her sleep – over the town and the countryside around, looking down on familiar and not so familiar scenes. She thinks she remembers flying while awake as a small child, but somehow she has lost the ability to do so, no matter how hard she tries. And she daren’t try too hard, because Mam doesn’t like any reminders that Gwenni might not be the same as everyone else. Set in rural Wales in the 1950s, Strachan’s debut novel follows Gwenni as the disappearance of a local man begins a chain of events, which reveal some of the secrets that lie under the surface of everyday life. The novel works in a number of ways. On the one hand, it is at times a darkly comic portrayal of small town Wales. On the other, it is a story about families, their secrets and the after effects of war. What holds these strands together is Gwenni herself as narrator, who sees more than she understands, and whose innocence is captured perfectly in Strachan’s often understated prose style. The supporting characters are equally well drawn – from highly strung Mam, to kind, patient Tada, from the mysterious Aunty Lol, to Alwenna, Gwenni’s best friend, old beyond her years and ‘with no shame!’ Although the solution to the main mystery of the story is clear to the reader from the outset, Strachan holds back just enough to keep us guessing at the other strands which she brings together for the conclusion – I guarantee she will keep you reading until the end.

A huge danger for small businesses is the risk of having to cease trading instantly. Public Liability Insurance, Employer’s Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurances are statutory, contractual, or just good business requirements. Personal insurances, specifically life insurance and critical illness are often ignored because they don’t seem relevant to business, especially for start-ups where money is tight.

If the business owner dies or is out-of-action with an injury or illness, a life insurance policy (or a critical illness policy) means that the right expertise can be hired giving time for a solution to be found. The lack of the right policies can be devastating for the business owner and their family.
Ledgability
‘Relevant’ life insurance, when applied to a key company director, is a tax deductible expense so, effectively, it is discounted compared to normal life insurance policies.
