Canal restoration reaches local landmark A major milestone has been reached in the restoration of a former waterway through the Wiltshire countryside. Hardworking volunteers with the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust have spent several years and tens of thousands of hours breathing new life into the stretch between Chippenham and Melksham. The former canalbed has been dug out and filled with water, the towpath has been reinstated and various structures including spillweirs, culverts and a wharf have been rebuilt, while the wildlife habitat has been improved with treeplanting, birdboxes and batboxes. Now the Trust has made another significant advance by extending the rewatered section beyond the local landmark of Double Bridge near Lacock, which was officially opened by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall in 2009. The line is now 1.25kms long – making it one of the longest stretches of navigable waterway to be restored by the charity so far – and allows boats to pass under the bridge for the first time in more than a century. Trust chairman Roderick Bluh said: “This is another impressive achievement by our fantastic volunteers and demonstrates the charity’s progress in bringing the canal back to life.” Much of the work has been undertaken by members of the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch of the Trust. Branch chairman Dave Maloney said: “Not so long ago Double Bridge was falling apart but today it’s a popular spot for walkers to sit on a bench and enjoy the view towards the River Avon in the meadow below. “Now visitors can also see boats travelling past for the first time since the collapse of the Stanley Aqueduct in 1901. 6
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
“At the moment the only craft permanently moored on this stretch is our workboat ‘Boswell’ which carries Trust volunteers and their tools from one end of the canal to the other, but we’ve also introduced a tripboat - the ‘Mary Archard’ -which will visit the site several times throughout the year.” This stretch of the restored Wilts & Berks extends through open countryside from the bottom of Pewsham Locks near Chippenham to the edge of Reybridge near Lacock. The Trust’s plan is to continue south to Melksham to connect with the Kennet & Avon Canal near Semington. The original route through Melksham has been lost under modern development but the charity hopes to create a new link using the River Avon instead. Ultimately the charity wants to restore the canal all the way to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon. Dave said: “The pace of progress is increasing and we now have several workparties throughout the area. We’d love to welcome more volunteers who can help us to maintain the momentum, with roles including digging, bricklaying and grasscutting. It’s a great way to enjoy fresh air and exercise. “The Trust also has opportunities for people who want to be involved with fundraising and project management. “Every hour is sincerely appreciated.” For further information on how to reach the canal from Pewsham or Reybridge, or to join the Trust, visit www.wbct.org.uk The Mary Archard tripboat is next due to visit on the Saturdays of June 9, August 11, September 8 and October 13, from 11am-3pm

Supporters thanked as Wiltshire Air Ambulance moves into its new airbase AN EXCITING chapter in the history of Wiltshire Air Ambulance began in May when the charity started working from its new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. The move to the new airbase co-incides with the successful conclusion of the charity’s major fundraising Airbase Appeal. The custom-built airbase, at Outmarsh, will bring together the charity’s fundraising, administrative and operational teams under one roof. The charity team were in rented offices in Calne while the helicopter and aircrew will move from a leased hangar at Wiltshire Police headquarters in Devizes. The helicopter and aircrew are due to relocate permanently to the new airbase by the end of this month following a phased introduction of daytime and night-time flying. For the rest of this month, the helicopter will forward deploy to Outmarsh each morning, returning to Police Headquarters at the end of each day. It is hoped that the aircraft will be fully operational from the new airbase and permanently located there from early June. David Philpott, Chief Executive of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Our new airbase at Outmarsh, near Semington, is something that we are very proud of and everyone who has raised funds for it should be equally as proud. The purpose-built facility will secure our future and enable us to continue saving lives for years to come. “The response to our Airbase Appeal to raise the remaining monies to complete the build has been excellent. We’d like to thank everyone who generously donated, from individuals, community groups, schools to businesses and grant making trusts. People really got behind the appeal and raised funds in a variety of ways, including head shaves, long distance walks and skydives. Altogether, the Airbase Appeal raised in excess of £800,000.”
10
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
Mr Philpott said that because of good project management and cost efficiencies the total bill for the new airbase had come in well under budget. He said: “Based upon professional estimates we originally thought the airbase would cost £5.1 million but I am delighted to say that the actual cost is nearer £4.25 million. This has been possible because our competitive tendering process resulted in the appointment of a very local firm – Rigg Construction (Southern) Limited – who have managed to achieve even greater cost saving efficiencies for us as the project progressed.” He added: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance has been saving lives for over 28 years, but we have only been able to do that thanks to the amazing generosity of our supporters. Now that we have moved into our new airbase the challenge remains for us to raise the £3.25 million we need each year to keep operating our lifesaving service.” With the move to the new airbase comes a new phone number – 01225 300536 – and the charity’s new address is Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Outmarsh, Semington, Wiltshire, BA14 6JX. The charity is keen to point out that visits to the new airbase are by appointment only. Kevin Reed, Head of Facilities and Security at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We know there is a lot of interest in the new airbase by our supporters and we are looking forward to welcoming them to it. We will be hosting a number of open days later in the year for them, including the local community of Semington and Melksham.” Thank you for your support! Children and adults exclaimed with joy as they recognised their favourite Children’s Book characters around the village, each sponsored by a local business. Back at Lansdowne Hall, many enjoyed the BBQ, homemade cakes, facepainting and bouncy castle. The event was organised by Derry Hill’s charity-run pre-school, Rub-a-Dub. Many children from Calne, Chippenham and the surrounding villages use Rub-a-Dub pre-school and it’s popular forest school. Not all doom and gloom in the world of funerals At Odette Funeral Director things are certainly moving on and growing. Odette’s daughter Sara has just had a beautiful baby girl and is currently on maternity leave. Sara hopes to be back in November to carry on her job as Administrator and Funeral Arranger. Sara has been involved in the family business for nearly 2 years now and thoroughly enjoys the work involved. “It is very rewarding and I get to meet lots of lovely people and to help them at a very difficult time”, she says.
an advantage as the Limousine can be hired out for weddings as well. Odette says: “I found it quite overwhelming when I went to collect the vehicles. This is what I have always wanted to be a fully independent funeral director with the involvement of my family. It doesn’t get any better that that!”.
Also working in the family business is Odette’s son, Tom, at just 19 years old he is very mature and capable in his role within the business. He too finds the work very interesting and rewarding. Tom’s role is varied and since Sara has been on maternity leave he has had to help with the administration as well. Tom says: “There is a lot of different aspects in the work I carry out and I find it most enjoyable. I particularly like bearing on funerals and I hope that one day I will be in a position to conduct”. Another area that has seen change is that Odette has now invested in her own Hearse and Limousine. The interior of both vehicles is cream leather, this being

Will David Cameron’s (“DC”) legacy be BREXIT or Social Care Reform? We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises in elderly care, for his views on this issue. Surely it must be BREXIT? Because it gets all the headlines BREXIT will almost definitely be what DC is most remembered for? It is my belief however, that running a close second will be DC and his government’s unfulfilled pledges in respect of Social Care.
capable of being pursued. His disappointment was because he thought that with the support of insurance products which the insurance industry were not interested in the CAP could have been a long term solution to the ongoing crisis in social care.
Why do you say that? People may well recall that when DC won his last election in 2015 the Tories were saying that people would only have to pay for the first £72,000 of their elderly care costs. This was known as the “CAP”. The flag ship for the CAP at the time was the Care Act 2014. Shortly after DC was elected as Prime minister this pledge was broken (17.07.15 to be precise) and in December 2017 Jackie Doyle-Price, Health Minister said it would not be reintroduced.
What is the future? Nobody of course knows, but there is irony in what DC has reportedly said. This is because a green paper on the future of social care is to be published by the government in the summer and prior consultations have resulted in some insurers and in particular Royal London Mutual saying there is a potential important role for the insurance industry.
What does DC say about this? Recently DC was interviewed by the FT Weekend and stated that he was disappointed at his government’s record on Social Care and that the CAP was not

What is best to do? Understand the existing rules under The Care Act 2014 and proceed accordingly. Waiting or doing nothing in relation to social care is not the best option. This approach only results in people not being organised and paying more.

Come one, come all! Chippenham Carnival is back for 2018, with fabulous floats and vintage vibes… Step back in time and experience all the fun of the fair, brought to you by Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council from 128pm on Saturday 14th July. 2017 saw the return of this well-loved tradition after 16 years with over 17,700 visiting Chippenham across the day, enjoying over 8 hours of free entertainment. 2018 will see even more free flowing fun with a vintage twist. Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “Last year’s Carnival was brimming with superb community fun right in the heart of Chippenham. For 2018 we are delighted to be able to include a float procession with the route being released at the end of April. We encourage everyone to get involved and support your local Carnival. You can register to strut your stuff by float or by foot at www.chippenhamcarnival.co.uk - but hurry as places are limited.” Island Park will be transformed into a sea of colourful activity for all the family to enjoy from 12noon hosted by the Official Ringmaster, with performances from local musicians on the main stage, circus acts and children’s characters as well as children’s rides. The picnic zone will be the perfect place to enjoy treats from the food hub, while visitors will be able to pick up hand-crafted items, gifts and produce from the trade and charity stalls. Sandie Webb of Chippenham Town Council said, “Chippenham Carnival is an important part Chippenham’s heritage and we are so pleased to see its return. Following its success last year, the addition of the float procession will bring even more opportunities for the local community to be involved in such a fun event in the centre of town.” The Official Ringmaster will host the Fancy Dress Competition at 2pm at Island Park with the Mayor of Chippenham before the Carnival King, Queen, Prince and Princess are crowned at 3pm at Emery Gate Shopping Centre. Other free action-packed activities planned include a zip wire zone and climbing wall for those daredevils in the crowd and festival face painting, plus a range of circus skill workshops will be on offer including clowning, juggling and unicycling. The new float procession will take place at 7pm, inviting the community to come together and celebrate before heading to Island Park to enjoy the finale headline act on the main stage. Then a new choir set up exclusively for selfprofessed terrible singers in Wiltshire could well be just the thing for you. Chippenham Tuneless Choir will burst into song for the very first time on the evening of Monday 9th July 2018 at Sheldon Road Methodist Church in Audley Road. The choir is the idea of Lis Hazell, a former primary school teacher and experienced junior choir leader who believes passionately that singing should be enjoyed by everyone. The benefits of singing in a group are well documented. Research shows that singing releases endorphins - the brain’s feel-good chemicals – as well as reducing stress, boosting the immune system and increasing life satisfaction. ‘For years, many who have felt too embarrassed to sing within earshot of others have not been able to enjoy these benefits,’ Lis says, ‘but now, with the Tuneless Choir, they can. These people often consider themselves to be tone deaf, but this is unlikely to be the case. Whilst a very small percentage of the population actually are, a lack of practice and confidence simply means a lot just can’t sing in tune, which is known as being ‘tuneless’. Everybody with a voice can sing, but they may not always hit the right note at the right time!’ For more information, visit: www.tunelesschoir.com/chippenham. Alternatively, you can contact Lis directly by e-mailing chippenham@tunelesschoir.com or calling 07831 154762.

This year’s annual Summer Festival & Carnival will take place on Saturday June 30th 2018 and will be sporting the theme of ‘Books’. This year we look to make it even better than ever, with a whole feast of decadent activities, acts and stalls for all the family to enjoy! Why not come along and lindy hop along to the rock ‘n’ rolling’s of ‘The Rockin’ Bandits’, or get in touch with nature and enjoy the animal petting farm with ‘Dave & Ewe’, or simply help support one of your local schools or community groups who are hosting a variety of game and craft stalls. Beauty will also be bestowed upon us on this day in the form of an enchanting and captivating mermaid, as she glides around in her glistening sea sphere to entertain you all. This enthralling and magical mermaid will bring joy to all those whose path she crosses, letting your imagination run wild and your heart smile. We would really love to encourage anyone and everyone to get involved in this year’s event, by either hosting a stall or maybe entering the event with a float (provided free of charge with driver) or as a walking entry into the carnival itself. So far we have an amazing 10 entries for this year’s procession including such book ideas as; The Hungry Caterpillar, Aladdin, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, The Wizard Of Oz… to name but a few! Atwell Wilson Museum Classic Car and Vehicle Show “IT’S SHOWTIME!” Now firmly established as one of the “best in the West”, this year’s classic car and vehicle show will take place on the Museum Showground in Stockley Lane, Calne, over the weekend of 14/15th July.
Blue Sky Festival A celebration of arts for all the family, the annual Blue Sky Festival at The Pound in Corsham runs from Tuesday June 12 to Sunday June 17 . Expect a joyous, warm, quirky festival featuring performances, exhibitions and workshops. Headline events include: a screening of the box office smash film ‘The Greatest Showman’; hilarious Tangram Theatre present ‘Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking’, a musical comedy about the eccentric physicist’s theories (photo below); and ‘The Scummy Mummies’, (photo right) the UK’s number-one kids and family podcasters - as recommended by The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, and BBC’s Woman’s Hour – who give their less-than-perfect parenting tips. ‘Family Sunday’ is filled with fantastic acts including music from Rocktopus and Nick Cope; and take a ride on ‘The Bewonderment Machine’ by A Bird in the Hand Theatre. The festival closes with the exquisite Rachel McShane and her new band The Cartographers. To book tickets call The Pound on 01249 701628 or visit www.blueskyfestival.org.uk
Corsham Walking Festival The 5th Corsham Walking Festival takes place between 8-10th June 2018. There are twenty-seven walks exploring the local and surrounding picturesque rolling countryside on paths dating back to Roman times. There are walks for all abilities and interests. Visit our website at www.corshamwalkingfestival.org.uk for more information or join our Facebook Group to keep in touch with all things walking in and around Corsham. Booking opened in April - do not leave it too long to book a place.
This year’s show celebrates 70 years of both the Jaguar XK and the ubiquitous Land Rover, many of which are expected to be present.
This really is an amazing event which always attracts several hundred classic cars, motorcycles, commercials and even tractors! On Saturday some will take part in a road run around the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and on Sunday its Show Day. For those bringing their classic cars and who book in advance, the event is free to enter. For those who turn up on the day its £7 for adults and £1 for children under the age of 15. However, this also includes admission to the Museum and the opportunity to browse the trade stalls, enjoy the vintage tea room and marvel at some of the very rare cars which will be on display. All in all a great day out, which we hope will attract many readers of this publication. Finally, the Museum is delighted to announce its latest donation, a 1928 Trojan Achilles Saloon. Owned by the same family since 1929, it is the only one left in the world still running. More details of this vehicle will appear in a later edition but it can be seen at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=lqifshkrm40.

What happens when you borrow money from your Limited Company bank account. Many director/shareholders borrow money from their Companies but, as long as they pay it back within 9 months of the following accounting year end date, there are no great tax implications. If it is not paid back by that deadline, a law called s.455, says the Company must pay 32.5% of the outstanding loan to HMRC – who then hold this money until the loan has been repaid to the Company.
Johnson & Daltrey
What you cannot do is pay it back by the deadline and then re-borrow it soon afterwards - unless it is a loan under £15,000 which can be re-borrowed if more than 30 days later.
Care and Compassion From Our Family To Yours.
HMRC could also treat loans over £15,000 as not repaid if they believe it was intended that the loan would be reborrowed, once repaid.

Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival Sat 16 & Sun 17 June 2018, 10am - 5pm At the heart of the festival is the Scarecrow Trail, centred around the village green and about 1.5mls in total length (generally flat and wheelchair/ buggy friendly, some lanes are without footpaths, refreshments and entertainments on the village green which is a bit bumpy). The theme for 2018 is "BOOKS". We generally have around 70 Scarecrows, each representing a different title, and all made by folks from the village and surrounding areas. With help from clues in the programme, visitors are invited to guess as many titles as they can, and there's even a £100 prize. Alongside the main scarecrow Trail we also run a full programme of entertainment and activities. We have a brilliant "Sound Stage" showcasing local bands, singers and choirs. You'll also find a feast of high quality refreshments at affordable prices, sourced locally where we can. This includes a BBQ tent, Tea tent and "The CrowBar". Traditional village cream teas are available at the Church and Chapel. We are busily planning two full days of activities for the kids. The Scarlett Princesses are booked and FREE circus skills workshops will run when the trail is open (and conveniently near the CrowBar tent!). There will be a Family tent with activities for the younger ones
too and more to come! Then of course we have the stalls, charity stalls, kids rides, there really is something for everyone. www.scarecrows.biz

My all-time favourite cake is still mum’s chocolate fridge cake – I’ll be making some for my own tea party this year! “My top tip would be to invite more people than you can possibly fit into your house. They will squeeze, don’t worry. For cake, people will do anything. “So, to all my friends in Wiltshire, get baking!”
Rebecca Dade Community Fundraiser for Wiltshire said: “Throwing a Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie in June is an easy way to get together with friends, family and colleagues and raise money for a great cause. You can invite the whole village round for a garden party, or spend time with a few close friends and buy in your favourite treat. “So whether you’re an aspiring pastry chef, or a total butterfingers, join the thousands of people in Wiltshire who will be baking up a storm to raise money for people who are terminally ill across the whole country. We’re counting on your cuppa!” To find out more and receive your free fundraising pack, call 0800 716 146 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty 34

Spirit Fashion
THE LAWRENCE SOCIETY OF ARTS DEVIZES
Affordable Art Trail 18th to 23rd June 2018
Set up 70 years ago to encourage artists of all ages in Devizes and surrounding areas, it is named after one of the town's famous sons, Sir Thomas Lawrence who went from Landlords son, at The Bear Hotel here, to court painter. If you've ever been to Windsor Castle and looked into The Waterloo Room, most of the portraits in there are his.
Spirit Fashion can be found either from the Old Swan Yard or Number 3, High Street, Devizes. Our contemporary brands hail from across Europe and the UK. We stock a great selection of footwear, accessories, jewellery and lingerie and are always on the hunt for yet more new and exciting styles to bring to Wiltshire. We have excellent dressmakers on hand for alterations to Spirit purchases. Our team offer an 'out-of-shop-hours' personal dressing/ styling service, either on a one to one or in a group. Opening Times: Monday - Saturday 9.30am - 5.30pm
SPIRIT FASHION
The Lawrence Society of Arts meets on the first Monday of each month, except August, at 7.15pm in the upper room of the Town Hall. There is a demonstration of one of the many artistic techniques or a speaker on art. The friendly atmosphere and excellently encouraging programme are something we are very proud of. Our meeting closes at 9.30pm. We also hold an annual Young People's Art Exhibition and prizes are given for each age group. Workshops are another part of our portfolio, designed to stimulate and encourage our members. Each year there are 3 ten week Painting Group Meetings for those who want to be inspired in less formal surroundings and just paint and chat. This year there are also plans for a couple of Pop-Up Exhibitions in Albion Square, next to Devizes Books, between July and October. Our Annual Exhibition was always in The Corn exchange but this year we found it unavailable for the time we needed. My idea, as the new Chairman is to take the art to the community through a week-long affordable Art Trail and Exhibition within the Devizes Town Centre; joining with local business in providing a different and more interesting community-style of exhibition of member's works, as well as a smaller Exhibition, benefiting families and individuals (who, seeing the art can follow the Trail to win prizes from questionnaires; one for children and one for adults), while bringing more people to local businesses in these hard-pressed times, at no cost to them. All each business had to provide was the space for as many paintings as wanted. The Lawrence Society will do the rest; setting up the art works and removing them within days of the Trail’s end. The top three rooms of the Crown Centre will hold some 80 exhibition items as well as being the place for a card machine for those wishing to purchase Lawrence Society Members' work. 70 local businesses have agreed to display our works during the above period, providing places for around 270 artefacts (with the further 80 to be at The Crown Centre - our start & finish of The Trail).

DEVIZES
Devizes
hair, and branches spewing forth from his open mouth is carved into the stone. Known as “The Green Man”, (or Herne the Hunter, or Kernunnos), he began appearing in Pagan rite as the God of the forests, evolving into the (Victorian) Pagan symbol of lust and excess. The stone carving in the church however, is the “Green Man” at his best, benign watcher over trees and woodland.
History Unlimited by Jo Deacon Devizes grew from an early settlement of 400AD, when King Dunwallo made his encampment there.
From mysterious crop circles, to silent stones in a ring, from sightings of “lights-in-the-sky” to shadowy figures and black dogs, and the rumble of coach and horses in the dark of night on lonely roads, Wiltshire has it all, and Devizes certainly has a lion’s share.
With the entry of the Normans into Britain, Bishop Osmund constructed the first true castle, built entirely of timber, which burned to the ground some years later. Once the community of skilled stonemasons and labourers had been joined by their wives and children, their temporary dwellings clustered around the outer walls of the castle soon turned into a more permanent little township, and they began to hold regular markets each week.
The misty shapes of people strolling along “Quaker’s Walk”, who vanish as suddenly as they appeared, and the “ghosts” of large black dogs who either pass by without a sound, or stop in their tracks to give an unearthly howl, are things to make a shiver run up the spine, even when spoken of and not experienced.
The church of St John was erected to serve the needs of the castle, followed by St.Mary’s church for the commoners outside the walls. A feudal system was introduced, leading to heavy tolls on all goods sold at the market, and in accordance with their laws, a place of execution located at “Gallow’s Ditch,” now Hillworth.
Everyone knows that the famous battle of Roundway Down, which took place in 1643, is a part of English history, but who would be brave enough to sit by the imposing mound in the dead of night, with no moon, and stars for company? Highwaymen prowled the lanes around Devizes as recently as the mid eighteen hundreds.
During the French invasion, of 1216, King John secured the Crown jewels inside the castle, where his second wife Isabella had given birth to a son in 1209, three years after her imprisonment there, and in 1299. The castle and town of Devizes were part of the marriage settlement of Edward 1st. to Margaret of France.

1857 saw the first great steam trains passing through the busy and thriving market town of Devizes. The Great Western Railway and the new age of travel had arrived. The last execution took place in Devizes Prison in 1903, the prison being demolished in 1927. Devizes is a most enjoyable place to shop or visit the Caen Hill flight of locks, or simply stroll around the narrow and twisty streets behind the main thoroughfare.

With it’s woods and forests filled with deer and wild boar, the castle kitchens were never empty, and venison was so plentiful that it was supplied to Parliament in abundance.
In 1845, the now famous white horse was carved out of the chalk downs of Roundway Hill, and in 1851, the first lunatic asylum was opened in the town,
The Historic Black Swan, Devizes In the Market Place in Devizes sits the newly refurbished Black Swan. Since as far back as 1737, this now well known and established pub, came about from a humble Coaching Inn - providing shelter for both man and horse. The barns in their time would house the horses and the ‘Inn’ catered for the travellers. The Black Swan has recently gone through an amazing transformation. The interior and exteriors have undergone a dramatic change. Inside the pub, the downstairs houses a kooky and quirky ‘snug’ and a well stocked bar leading on to a generous dining area. The Black Swan prides itself on providing value for money, quality food, incorporating traditional pub fayre with bespoke home made dishes made from local produce. Ales are from the local brewery, Wadworths who are famous for their 6x! Providing a rustic feel but with all the updated modern touches and beautiful guest accommodation makes The Black Swan is a place for visitors, locals and families alike. Conference facilities, weddings and parties are all catered for. A further renovation is in one of the stables which has been newly converted into a superb outside bar, fully kitted out for any event such as weddings, birthdays and family celebrations.
The outside space again iis tailored for all weathers and ‘parties’ - outside seating areas are under cover and kept toasty warm by the outside heating! Combined with pub quizzes on Thursdays, a Friday night Loyalty Scheme. Saturday Live Music and activities like Face painting and entertainments for the children make this the place to spend your Sunday afternoon after a sumptuous lunch. This carefully thought out refurbishment of a local, legendary Public House is not to be missed any day of the week. You will be sure to receive a very warm welcome from Jonny and his staff at The Black Swan.

Located in Bromham near Devizes, it's fantastic that we have one of these experiences in our local area.
Ice cream freshly made at the Rowdey Cow Farm Cafe in Rowde near Devizes. Pictured below are from the left: Sue Thompson, Karen Blanchard and Sophie Covington.
The basic idea of the game is that you and your team of 2 - 6 adult players have just one hour to escape from the locked room. You have to solve various puzzles to open locks which lead you to further clues and eventually to the key to the Escape Room door. There are two themed rooms to choose from and both are receiving 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor. Games are suitable for both novices and experienced players alike. It’s a great way to celebrate a special occasion, team building or just to treat yourself! The hour just flies by and there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction when you open a combination lock with a number that you have derived from what at first appeared to be quite random information, and if you do manage to escape within the hour the sense of achievement is just incredible. The Escape Rooms are open every day except Thursdays - check out the website for more information. www.11thHourEscapeRooms.co.uk www.facebook.com/11thHourEscapeRooms (Prices start from just £13 per person)

RECIPE
Stuffed Peppers
A healthy and easy way to cater for differing dietary needs. METHOD 1. Cut the tops off the peppers and deseed the insides 2. Put the peppers into a bake-proof dish filled with just enough water to cover the bottom. Sprinkle with salt. 3. Preheat the oven to 190oc, cover the dish with foil and cook the peppers for about 10 minutes. 4. Meanwhile prepare your fillings. For this recipe we have chosen a ricebased filling. 5. In a large pan, heat some oil and gently fry the onion. When softened, add the crushed garlic and cook for another minute. 6. Add in the beef and cook through for about 8 minutes. 7. Remove from the heat and stir in the rice and tomatoes. 8. Fill the peppers and then add the cheese on top. 9. Bake uncovered for about 20 minutes then serve. 10. You can make and refrigerate these a day ahead but add about 10 more minutes to the baking time. 48

How stressed are you? by Helen Adams, of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic
A
LL of us are subject to stress from time to time – it is natural to move between ‘rest and digest’ mode and ‘flight, flight or freeze’ mode many times during a day.
This allows our body to divert scarce resources either to our central organs (to digest food) or to our muscles (the outer body) to give us a surge of energy where it’s most needed. Sometimes, those responses don’t switch quite so easily and over time we may become more and more exhausted from the effort of dealing with stress. This stress could be caused by any number of things from work stress to family difficulties. Even social isolation can cause stress. You may be surprised by the way stress can affect you. I see many people who don’t even realise tress is at the root of their health problems, it just creeps up on them. Take my Quiz opposite to find out how stress is affecting you.
“I Don’t Know What to Eat? – the Definitive Guide to Food Allergies, Intolerance and Sensitivities” is published in paperback and e-book. It can be ordered from her website. Anyone worried about their alle rgy or hayfever symptoms can book a 30-minute free discovery consultation with Helen at her Chippenham-based clinic, either in-person or by telephone.

4. Are you carrying a spare tyre around your middle?

5. Do you have sweaty palms?

6. Do you crave sweet foods?

7. Do you get irritable if you go without food for more than 5 hours?

8. Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep?
____
9. Do you feel very fatigued when you wake up in the morning?

10. Do you have slow wound healing?

11. Do you need to urinate often?
____
12. Do you crave salty foods?
____
If you scored less than 3, you’re in control. You may worry about things from time to time, but generally you can deal with it and it doesn’t affect you too much. If you scored 4-6, you would benefit from some lifestyle measures to help you switch off. Some changes to your diet would really help (hint: having more vegetables is always a good plan!), and finding ways to relax that work for you – yoga, pilates, meditation or tai chi work well. You can get meditation apps for your phone, so you only need to find as little as five or ten minutes in a day to do it. If you scored 7-9, you need all of the previous steps plus a more in-depth look at what is driving the stress and how to deal with it. You might also consider kinesiology to help rebalance your body. If you scored 10 or more, you need more than a few ‘tweaks’, you need a ‘reset’ to make a big difference to the way you feel. Contact me as soon as possible!

7 Reasons to have Reflexology, Massage or a Facial this summer! 4. Chill out time – on those sultry summer nights sleep can be elusive - reflexology and massage ease tension and can help with your sleep. 5. An active summer – gardening, walking, running, cycling and swimming – can all take their toll on our bodies and we end up with sore muscles after all the jobs/activities we have participated in; massage can help ease pain from problems as well as making them less likely to occur. 6. Summer heat and humidity can lead to swelling and discomfort as fluid accumulates. Massage and reflexology can help increase blood flow, reduce swelling and help with mobility. Great on those really hot days.
Yvette Baker, MAR, MFHT of Harmony Holistics says, we all know that when the sun shines we feel uplifted, energised, happy and generally well. However, the combination of longer days and increased vitality may lead us to overdo it and we can end up feeling fatigued, listless and fighting off summer colds and the like. Being proactive about your health is something I’ve always believed in and I think we can all do something for ourselves to help keep us ticking over in a healthy and positive way. Holistic therapies resonate with this ethos and summer is a great time to turn to them to support your wellbeing. So, without further ado, here are 7 ways in which reflexology, massage and facials can help you maximise your enjoyment this summer:
1. Hay fever / sinus issues - can really take over your life – you’re sneezy, wheezy, your eyes are red and sore and you feel bleurgh. Reflexology can help relieve these distressing symptoms. 2. Feel fit and on top of the world – with longer days you cram in much more, the kids are home from school – you’re chauffeuring them here there and everywhere which, on top of all the other things you are doing, can make you feel tired and run down. Reflexology and massage can help counteract those feelings. 3. Nurture beautiful feet for your flip flops and sandals – regular reflexology treatments will help your feet look soft and tidy for summer footwear. 54
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
7. Summer skin care regime – the sun-kissed look can make us feel better but we really need to take extra special care of our skin during the summer months by wearing hats, sunglasses, non-toxic sunscreen, exfoliating, moisturising, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep. A facial once a month will see that your face is perfectly cleansed, toned and moisturised ready for whatever you are enjoying this summer. For anyone booking a treatment - massage, reflexology or facial - between June and September, Yvette is offering a luxury spa foot bath and exfoliating foot scrub for just £10 – wonderfully soothing and perfect for those hot, tired feet. Please quote TC2SummerInspiration when booking. For more information please call Yvette on 01249 821119 or 07850 414271 or see www.harmonyholisticscalne.co.uk

30 Days Wild Challenge
30 Days Wild pioneers action to connect people with natural beauty

Dr Miles Richardson, Director of Psychology, University of Derby explains: “Over the past three years we’ve repeatedly found that taking part in 30 Days Wild improves health, happiness, nature connection and conservation behaviours. Now we’ve discovered that engagement with the beauty of nature is part of that story.
T
HIS June’s 30 Days Wild challenge from The Wildlife Trusts will encourage thousands of people across the UK to make their neighbourhoods wilder – to help wildlife and get communities sharing the joy of the wild. Academics at the University of Derby who have monitored the challenge since it began in 2015 have discovered that spending time in nature makes us feel good. 30 Days Wild encourages people to notice nature on their doorsteps every single day and gives them a multitude of exciting and fun ways of doing it.
“Tuning-in to the everyday beauty of nature becomes part of a journey which connects us more deeply to the natural world. As people’s appreciation of natural beauty increases, so does their happiness. We respond to beauty - it restores us and balances our emotions. This, in turn, encourages people to do more to help wildlife and take action for nature.” The latest set of results from the study of 30 Days Wild also confirms that the benefits of the challenge last well after the month has ended. There are indications that the beneficial impact of taking part could last an entire year.

New research on link between natural beauty and happiness The University of Derby’s evaluation* of 30 Days Wild 2017 included new measures and reveals that people’s perception of beauty in the natural world is a key ingredient to unlocking the benefits of wellbeing and happiness experienced by participants in the challenge.

GARDENING GARDENING
T
Totally Tropical
HE ‘greenhouse effect’ is an environmental hot topic. And it’s true that despite the grim winter of 2017-18 we’ve generally been experiencing milder conditions in recent years. I’ve certainly started to experiment with more exotic plants. It’s a little risky; one hard winter can wipe out a tender specimen. But between now and September there’s every chance that many tropical plants will survive if planted out in our gardens. They need a sunny sheltered spot, like the one you would choose for petunias, tobacco plants and rose beds. Try Cannas. They have luxuriant broad spear-shaped leaves, which can be deep green, purple or even striped with orange or yellow. They produce vibrant flowers which look like gladioli but better! Or how about planting scarlet dahlias like ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, which also sports attractive bronze foliage. A big clump of African marigolds provides a blaze of fiery colour. Or try tender perennial salvias in colours which range from magenta through to scarlet and deep purples and blues. They won’t survive the first winter frosts but they an easy to propagate from shoot-cuttings which can be overwintered in a cool greenhouse ready for the following spring. Verbena bonariensis produces tall wands of dainty lilac flowers. They self-seed freely, which is great if you consider that a bonus in a plant (I do) but maybe avoid this one if self-seeding bothers you. You could even try a banana plant. The variety “Musa Banjo” is wonderfully architectural, and though it does not produce fruit it 60
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
will create impact. Plant in a large pot and let its fan-like leaves create fabulous shadows on the patio. It hails from Japan originally and loves sunshine, but it is hardy to -6C so perfect for the suburban UK climate. Do note that in winter the leaves naturally die back and turn brown. I thought I’d killed mine the first year, but the leaves grow back quickly in the spring. The Honey Bush (Melianthus major) is a terrific half-hardy foliage specimen with its 50cm long grey-green deeply serrated leaves, which look as though they’ve been cut with pinking shears. Some of these plants will survive a British Winter with protection but it’s probably best to treat your ‘tropical’ border as a temporary display. Experiment and have fun creating your very own suburban rainforest. Happy Gardening!

FAITH MATTERS
A Life’s Work D
o you like honey? I know that I do. I always have a jar of honey in the cupboard. It comes out most mornings when I pour a little honey on my porridge. Or in the summer months I use it to make a delicious honey and ginger salad dressing. I always used to think that every jar of honey tasted the same but I have become quite a connoisseur when it comes to the taste. The flower where the nectar was gathered determines the flavour and colour of the honey.
I was amazed the other day to read that each teaspoon full of honey is the life’s work of twelve honey bees. Imagine that! It’s estimated that bees fly 55,000 miles to make just one pound of honey. That’s 2.2 times around the world. Had you ever wondered how a bee could ever fill a jar of honey? If it were just down to one bee it would be a mighty task but the work is shared by many thousands of bees and is a great example of what can be achieved by a co-ordinated effort. Think of it in terms of humans creating something like a pyramid. It takes approximately 22,700 bees to fill a single one pound (0. 454g) jar of honey. That sounds very impressive, but a colony of bees doesn’t just make one jar of honey. Over a year the queen bee will produce between 100,000 and 200,000 bees and each bee will only spend between 10 and 20 days collecting nectar. Most worker bees only live for around six weeks in the summer and they can only go and forage for nectar on days when the air is warm enough. At its most productive a single colony of bees could theoretically produce Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
62
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
around 800 kg of honey, that’s almost a tonne. Beehives aren’t the size of warehouses to accommodate all that honey because it’s being continually used up by the bees as fuel, primarily to keep the brood warm during the winter. Bees use their honey as an energy source for the hive. Depending on the weather, a hive might use over 20kg (44 pounds) of honey over a single winter. So at any given time there may only be between 10 and 20 kg of honey in the hive. Without bees much of our food source would disappear over night. Our flowering plants rely on bees for pollination so that they can produce fruit and seeds. Without them pollinating the plants, there wouldn’t be many fruit or vegetables for us to eat. It’s amazing that one insect has such a profound impact on the sustainability of life. As I sit out in my garden and watch the bees progress from flower to flower I often reflect on how incredible creation is, with it’s amazing interdependence of life. One species depending on another for survival. Now I know that each teaspoon full of honey is the life’s work of twelve honey bees I am much more thankful to God as I pour my teaspoon of honey on my porridge each morning. It also makes me think about my life’s work and the impact that it has on the world. Too often the thought of changing the world seems like hard work. It feels like my efforts are only a drop in the ocean, but the more good we do the better the world will be, and every act of kindness is important to God who created us. And together, like the bees we can create something amazing. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net)

GARDEN BIRDS GOLDFINCH A strikingly colourful bird, delicate in features and bright in body. The sexes are similar except the male’s red face extends slightly behind the eye and they both have a yellow wing. They have long, thin beaks which allow them to access seeds from thistles and teasels and many are now visiting birdtables and feeders in gardens. During the winter many UK Goldfinches migrate as far as Southern Spain. You can see them anywhere there are scattered bushes and trees and less commonly in upland areas.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES
New Jaguar E-Pace SUV By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups
T
HE E-Pace is diminutive when compared with the F-Pace, and it doesn’t look much like it. It has more in common with the Range Rover Evoque, because it uses the same chassis. There are other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) models rolled into the mix, too. The new SUV’s headlights are reminiscent of the twoseater Jaguar F-Type, possibly hinting at the athletic potential of the E-Pace. There are two petrols and three diesels on offer. I drove the most potent diesel, the D240 twin-turbo.
As the numbers in its name suggest, the SUV churns out 240PS, and it’s fitted with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive only. There are a couple of model line-ups: regular and R-Dynamic; the latter of which gets twin tailpipes, front fog-lights and body-coloured door cladding. Then there are four trim levels within each range. I drove the ‘S’ trim in R-Dynamic form, which boasts fat alloys, navigation, electrically-adjustable front seats and leather upholstery. Behind the wheel, the E-Pace isn’t mind-blowing, but it’s very good as far as small SUVs go. The car’s steering weights up well at speed and the baby Jaguar feels planted, inspiring some confidence in corners. Zero to 62mph is achieved in 7.4 seconds and the top speed is 139mph. 68
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2018
Unsurprisingly, I found myself enjoying lacing the E-Pace down Corsican roads; perhaps even more so than if I’d been at the tiller of a German-made machine. The jewel in the E-Pace’s crown is undoubtedly its ride quality. The car feels refined on every road surface, behaving better than an SUV has any entitlement to, even at a snail’s pace. Potholes are soaked up so well that there are times when you wonder if the Jaguar has metamorphized into a hovercraft. The D240 produces just a smidgeon of diesel clatter on start-up, but it soon settles. Give it the beans with your right foot, though, and the oilburning musical score returns. To be fair, the car’s sound insulation masks this most of the time, to the point where you start to question which fuel type the Jaguar drinks. The E-Pace’s ZF nine-speed automatic ‘box changes smoothly, and on the R-Dynamic, gearshift paddles make things more fun. Rather than staying in ‘auto’ mode, you can dance through the cogs yourself using the shifters behind the steering wheel. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time. It’s even grin-inducing at times, with neat touches, like the ‘cub’ image in the windscreen frame helping to raise a smile. The general effect is elegant enough, with skilfully placed sections of leather and double stitching to remind you you’re in a quality motor. Only some hunks of dark plastic here and there rain on the parade.
Room-wise, you’re laughing in an E-Pace. The car will sit four-up, no problem, and tall occupants in the back seat won’t have cause to moan about legroom or headroom. There’s plenty of that. The practical side of things continues to the Jaguar’s boot. At 577 litres, it offers more cargo capacity than most other small SUVs. And things become positively van-like with the rear seats folded down. In place of human cargo, there’s 1,234 litres to knock yourself out with. JLR has every right to look like ‘the cat that got the cream’ with this fresh product. The E-Pace will be popular, no doubt about it. It has a near-flawless mix of comfort, practicality, power and refinement. Not every premium compact SUV can do that. A Good Read
Interview with the Vampire
Girl Underground
......................................................................................... Most people are familiar with the vampire myth as originally written by Bram Stoker in the 19th century. A blood thirsty monster whose sole aim is to kill, and perhaps transform his victims into vampires. For 70 years this was pretty much how vampires were perceived, until Anne Rice published her seminal gothic novel in 1976.
......................................................................................... Bridget is an 11-year-old girl who is about to start at a new school. Not just any school, but one of Australia’s top private boarding schools. All she wants is to stay anonymous in the hope that no one will find out about her family.
by Anne Rice
Daniel, a young reporter is approached by a mysterious man who offers to tell him his life story. The man is in his 20s and yet seems melancholy beyond his years. And Daniel soon learns why, as the man – Louis – tells a story that begins in the year 1791 in New Orleans. Devastated by the death of his brother, Louis gives up on life and at this low point he meets an enigmatic young man named Lestat – who turns out to be a vampire seeking a companion. With his permission he turns Louis into a vampire and the two embark on a lonely life moving from city to city and continent to continent under the cover of darkness. Known for her gothic style, it is Rice’s love of her hometown of New Orleans that comes through in this wonderfully evocative novel. Her descriptions bring the city to life and she gives her vampires a voice that speaks of the agony of eternity. This hugely influential work has shaped the genre ever since.

by Morris Gleitzman
You see, Bridget isn’t like the other pupils, and her family is not what you’d expect. Her dad does a roaring trade in dodgy Russian blenders and smuggling goods out of Turkmenistan, whilst her brother is in prison for robbery. Yes, Bridget is worried she will say the wrong thing and give herself away. So, when her new friend, Menzies, asks her to help him she is worried that people might start asking questions. Especially when it turns out that it involves breaking into the Australian government to try and see the Prime Minister! This hugely entertaining novel from Gleitzman deals with the serious issue of refugees in Australia, and debates the rights and wrongs of keeping them in detention centres as illegal immigrants. The reader will identify with the views of both Bridget and Menzies who cannot see the fairness in keeping children ‘behind bars’ when all they have done is escape from their homeland in fear for their lives. This is one to spark discussion!
