Rededication of Calne War Memorial Saturday 26th May The Town’s recently renovated War Memorial is to be unveiled by The Marquis of Lansdowne, during a Re-Dedication service at 11:30am on Saturday 26th May. Remembering the 133 men who lost their lives during World War 1 and the 45 men who lost their lives during World War 2. A parade will leave the Church Street beside the library at 10.45am for St. Marys Church and the Memorial where the ReDedication will take place at 11.00am. The Re-Dedication is planned to follow as closely as possible the original Dedication that took place on 18th May 1921. It will hopefully involve as many of the Town’s folk as possible, to remember the men of Calne who died in two world wars including many of the descendants of those whose names are inscribed upon the War Memorial, and with the youth organisations, charity organisations, schools and churches all taking part. Some years ago, Calne Branch of the Royal British Legion began an application to the War Memorial Trust for a grant to renovate the memorial in time for the Centenary year of the ending of World War 1. At the same time placing collecting boxes in pubs and shops throughout the town. It was from the generosity of the people of Calne as well as from very generous donations, and a grant from the War Memorial Trust that renovation work was carried out during April. Calne Branch of the RBL worked collaboratively with the Town Council, and St. Marys Church to obtain the permissions necessary to carry out the relevant restoration work. Please do mark the date and time in your calendars and come and see the work that has been done to continue to commemorate the young men of Calne who gave their lives during the 2 World Wars.

Malmesbury Celebrates RAF Centenary Nearly 100 current and former Royal Air Force personnel and their guests celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the RAF on 1st April, with a dinner in Malmesbury Town Hall. Organised by former Hercules pilot Matt Cockram, who lives in Malmesbury, the total combined service of those attending amounted to 1,200 years. They included one who had achieved over 40 years’ service to a young technician with just four years in the RAF. The evening began with a reception, followed by the dinner, provided by local Garsdon firm Manor Events and, after the Loyal Toast and speeches, concluded with entertainment from the Salisbury Big Band. Many who attended brought items of silver or souvenirs from their time in the RAF. Matt Cockram commented: I’m delighted that so many former and current RAF personnel of all ranks, and their partners, supported the dinner. It was a great success and a wonderful evening, thanks to the excellent facilities at the Town Hall.” Over £1,000 from the evening has been donated to the RAF Charitable Trust.

The Hedgehog Kitchen Company Royal Wootton Bassett's New Hedgehog Kitchen company are committed to being a responsible and environmentally kinder company. The Hedgehog Kitchen Company, run by father and Daughter team Penny and Paul, has been launched to fill a gap in the market for high quality, yet very cost effective, made to measure kitchens. From simply updating the doors in your kitchen to complete kitchen re-designs. Paul, a cabinet maker and carpenter by trade, has been fitting kitchens for years and has never been happy with how the waste was managed, “we would go through so many black bin bags a day, so much good wood was wasted too, I knew when we set up our own company, we had to do better”. Penny explains, “We recycle all our waste, we don't even use plastic bin bags, our reusable tubs and sacks are cheaper and don’t split. No usable wood goes to waste, if we can't use it, we donate it to local schools and therapy workshops. We even use the sawdust in our gardens!” With every Hedgehog Kitchen, you’ll receive a fantastic customised chopping board, hand-made from reclaimed worktops. A great way to avoid wasting quality wood. The families love of Hedgehogs and concern with the dwindling numbers of our spiky friends means for every kitchen they fit, they’ll donate £20 to a local Wildlife Rescue Centre of your choice. Based in the same Wootton Bassett workshop as Paul’s long established Lovewood Wiltshire, a joinery business specialising in bespoke furniture, Hedgehog Kitchens has an edge over their competitors. With the ability to create anything in their workshop and not having to be restricted by specific suppliers, you have an endless range of custom options. Not only are The Hedgehog Kitchen Company striving to lessen their environmental impact, they’re also passionate about being an ethical company in other ways. “It’s too easy in a large company to pass the blame down to the fitters when things go wrong. With us it’s different, you’re not just a number” Penny explains. At Hedgehog Kitchens the person you make first contact with is the same person that designs and quotes for your kitchen, orders/makes and even fits your kitchen. You’ll know your point of contact by name and you’ll know you’re being looked after. Being a small family run business means we can keep our prices low while delivering the best quality and customer service you could ask for. New personnel join Wiltshire Air Ambulance MARIA SMITH
Maria, 48, said working on air ambulances gives her a unique insight when treating patients.
Pre-hospital Emergency Care Doctor Maria Smith is delighted to be working in her home county training Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Paramedics.
“I like seeing patients early and trying to make a difference early,” she said. “There’s something very different about seeing patients where incidents happened and understanding how they happened. The air ambulance world is really good at training to ensure the safety of crews and governance and I take that back into my hospital work.”
Maria was born and brought up in Wiltshire and in her role as the Base Doctor at Wiltshire Air Ambulance she oversees Clinical Governance, trains the service’s Paramedics to develop their critical care skills and undertakes operational shifts on the helicopter and Rapid Response Car. Since joining Wiltshire Air Ambulance in her part-time role last year Maria, who has a home in Melksham and relatives living in the county, said: “I’m really proud to be working with Wiltshire Air Ambulance and I’m very lucky to be doing a job that I really enjoy. For me, it’s about wanting every patient to get the care you would want your mum or dad to get. “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a great team, from the pilots and
paramedics to the charity staff. It’s such a well supported charity and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of the public who fundraise for it. The new airbase at Semington is really exciting and it will be nice for the crew and charity team to be on the same site.
ROB BACKUS
Rob flew the MD902 Explorer for three years when the charity was sharing the helicopter with Wiltshire Police. When the joint helicopter contract came to an end in December 2014, Rob moved into Search and Rescue with Bristow Helicopters flying the Sikorsky 92 all round the UK.
Rob, 44, said: “It’s great to be back. I leapt at the opportunity to rejoin Wiltshire Air Ambulance in our brand new purpose-built airbase, flying the latest generation

Wiltshire Air Ambulance has to raise £3.25 million a year to keep flying and saving lives and Rob is full of admiration for everyone who fundraises for the charity, supported by the hard-working fundraising and administrative team.
Helicopter pilot Rob Backus says he is delighted to have rejoined Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Wiltshire Air Ambulance is now a stand-alone air ambulance and with the charity’s imminent move to its new airbase at Semington, near Melksham, Rob says he has joined at an exciting time in the charity’s development.
David Philpott, Chief Executive at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Experienced clinicians like Maria are few and far between and we count it a great privilege to have her as our Base Doctor. Her roots in this county means she has become deeply embedded in our team and we look forward to many years of partnership working with her.”
He said: “Everyone who donates or fundraises for us makes a huge difference. Any donation, however small, helps to keep us flying and saving lives.”

A keen sports enthusiast, Rob is going to be fundraising for Wiltshire Air Ambulance by running the Bath Half Marathon in 2019, postponed from this year due to snowy conditions. He has also uploaded a photo for the heli mosaic which will be created at the new airbase. Wiltshire Air Ambulance Pilot Rob Backus.

Niall Keating awarded Michelin Young Chef Accolade A Michelin star is the culinary goal for many chefs, and the achievement of one early in a cooking career propels a chef and their restaurant into a new, élite ‘club’. On 26 March 2018 in Budapest. Michelin hosted European Michelin Guide Star Day to celebrate European gastronomy with many Michelin-starred chefs at the gala event, including Guy Savoy, Georges Blanc, Elena Arzak, Pascal Barbot, Raymond Blanc, and Quique Dacosta. Not only were the latest European selections for the European edition of the Guide announced, but two prestigious new prizes were presented - The Michelin Chef Mentor 2018 Award, for the involvement of a chef in training young talents, and The Michelin Young Chef 2018 Award. Niall Keating, Executive Chef at Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds, has won The Michelin Young Chef 2018 Award. Niall achieved a first Michelin star in October 2017,
aged just 26, and less than a year after joining the hotel. Five young chefs from key European markets who have recently achieved a Michelin star were selected for the shortlist of the Michelin Young Chef 2018 Award. The shortlisted chefs were selected after an assessment of their great culinary potential and their notable career progress to date. Niall’s pedigree is impressive, with positions in several Michelin establishments in three countries - Sat Bains (two stars, near Nottingham), Benu (in San Francisco, with three stars), and Kong Hans Kælder (in Copenhagen, with one star). Along the way, Niall has developed his own distinctive cooking style, not fusion,
but marrying different culinary influences from Asia and Europe. Precise, inventive, and delicious, Niall’s carefully crafted menu in The Dining Room at Whatley Manor is a true expression of his creative instincts. Sue Williams, General Manager at Whatley Manor, who has known Niall since 2010 when he started his career as a Commis Chef at the Bath Priory Hotel, commented on the new accolade: “I feel immensely proud to be working alongside Niall and supporting him on his culinary journey. There was never a moment’s doubt in my mind that he is a top talent, oozing with original ideas. His focus is unwavering, and his comprehension of the sector in which he operates is impressive for his age. Knowing Niall as I do, he will accept this wonderful recognition with humility and will share the success with his team." Further praise and support is expressed by Christian Landholt, owner of Whatley Manor: “I am so excited for Niall to have won this award! Despite having been at Whatley Manor for only 14 months, I have quickly grown to admire not only his incredible talent and creativity as a chef, but also his work ethic and respect towards his colleagues. It is wonderful to have Niall as part of the team at Whatley. I now look forward to continue supporting him in his career and helping him achieve his further goals and ambitions.”

Expert trainer in sports science introduces dry cupping to professionals Dawn Morse, founder of training company Core Elements, is hosting a series of dry cupping courses in the UK - one of the first to offer such training for sports massage therapists and related professionals. Dawn, who was a senior lecturer for the University of Bath foundation degree in sports therapy and is an associate lecturer with the Open University, will be running her courses from Swindon and from Haydock near Liverpool with dates starting later this month. Her Swindon courses are running on Friday May 11, Friday July 13 and Friday October 12. She said: “Dry cupping is a Western take on an ancient alternative therapy to reduce muscle tension and increase blood flow as part of a massage therapy. Therapists use cups of glass, bamboo or silicon to an area of skin for a few minutes to create suction. The treatment can help
with conditions including muscle pain, reduced joint movement, headaches, back pain, stress and anxiety.” The course is designed for professionals who wish to upskill and offer more effective treatments for clients. It’s accredited by the Federation of Holistic Therapists and equates to eight hours of CPD training. CHIPPENHAM BID AWARDS 2018
The Garden blossoms among winning Chippenham town centre businesses Another winning team on the night came from Maria Christina Bridal Boutique, of New Road, Chippenham which took the award for Start Up Business of the Year. The team now proudly display their award in the entrance to their premises. Maria Christina Bridal Boutique was set up by Maria Halliday who has worked in the hair and beauty industry for 30 years. This led to her becoming increasingly involved in weddings and the wedding sector. After her own wedding in 2016 she decided she could offer a one-stop shop for brides and bridesmaids, having gone through the whole experience herself and understanding the emotional journey customers take when planning their own wedding or the wedding of a loved one. The Garden – run by John Paine and his team – won two awards at the recent Chippenham BID (business improvement district) Business Awards which celebrated the efforts and successes of businesses in and around Chippenham town centre. The team won the award for Hotel, Restaurant or Café of the Year and also the overall Chippenham Business of the Year Award. The awards panel said they had won due to fantastic feedback from customers which led to an outstanding entry. John Paine set up The Garden about three years ago on The Bridge in Chippenham offering great food and high standards of customer service. Then disaster struck when a fire broke out destroying the interior of the premises. After months of struggle, The Garden returned and has been going from strength to strength ever since. John said: “I just want to say a big thank you to all of the staff at The Garden for making the business such a success, especially to Marge, Phil, Jay and Gemma who have been on the rollercoaster with me since before the fire.”
Maria, who’s 49, said: “We have a strong team now with four designers and we also work with other local businesses including a photographer and a florist with products and samples available here in house. We believe in promoting and working with other local businesses and for our customers we work with anyone from a size 8 up to a size 32. “To win the award has been wonderful for the team – it’s just great to be recognised by fellow business owners and the effect on the team has been fantastic. It was also a fabulous way to connect with other local businesses.” 16

CHIPPENHAM BID AWARDS 2018 Apprentice of the Year was Ben Lisseman of Digiprint which has offices in both Chippenham and Bath. Ben, a former student of Sheldon School, began his sales and marketing apprenticeship with Digiprint just over a year ago and is still only 17. He said he was thrilled to win the award. “It’s been a busy and eventful year for me,” Ben said. “I ‘ve been learning how to deal with people, about the world of print and the working world and what’s needed and expected on a day to day basis. In terms of sales and marketing, I’ve learned it’s about relationships first and building rapport. It’s about learning about others and their needs and then – when they might have need of your services or products – they’ll think of you. It’s not about the hard sell.” Winner of the Small Business of The Year was Huw Thomas of Huw Thomas Commercial which specialises in supporting fellow business owners with buying shops, finding new office or premises and land transactions. Huw, who has lived in Chippenham for 30 years, set up his business in 2013 after taking redundancy from a previous role. He believes his local knowledge and being a member of the Chippenham community has been a strong factor in the success of his business which is based on Station Hill. “Fortunately things have gone very well in my first five years,” Huw said. “The value of winning this award is it represents recognition from other businesses in the town and it proves your credentials and the judges have researched and assessed my business and deemed it to be worthy of winning – that is hugely rewarding.” The team from City Dressing won the title of Creative or Technology Business of the Year. Jeremy Rucker, who lives in Bromham, runs the company, based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate, which operates nationwide
transforming spaces using outdoor media in shop windows, streets and on individual properties. Using art in synergy with technology, it’s possible you’ve seen his team’s work without knowing it. His team are responsible for the umbrellas often seen around town centres and this year giant flip-flops are going to make an entrance! He said: “We’ve created new ways of making spaces eyecatching and entertaining to transform public spaces and to increase footfall and interest in a street or shopping centre or city centre. We’ve done pop up shops, light shows and much more and we’re thrilled with this award.” J Shepherd and Sons Ltd won the Independent Business of the Year Award. They are a small family business who design and install made to measure Kitchens, Bathrooms, Bedroom Furniture and Karndean/J2 Flooring from their workshop/showroom in Bumpers Farm, Chippenham. Their business has been running since August 2013, starting originally as a father and son team and has been growing year on year ever since. Oli Shepherd commented ” It was a great honour to receive the award this year and I think shows how hard we all work as a team. And to achieve being named as finalists for the second year in a row in the same category proves I think that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed in our small but thriving business community.” Customer Service Award winner was Bewley & Merrett Funeral Directors. Amber Bewley commented: 'We are so proud and delighted to be the winners of the Customer Service Award. A big thank you to everyone in the Bewley & Merrett Team who this award is dedicated to and to all our customers for their fantastic support and positive feedback which is always gratefully received.” The BID’s awards for 2018 took place at the Neeld Community and Arts Centre in Chippenham and the main sponsor was Awdry Bailey and Douglas. The awards themselves were also sponsored by local companies and organisations including The Angel Hotel, Platinum Mortgage Solutions and Wiltshire College. The other award winners were: Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Cheryl Klukowski Stevenson of Taste of the Caribbean and Chocolate Blonde, Professional Services Provider of the Year: Goughs Solicitors, Lifetime Achievement Award: Rick Squires

CHIPPENHAM
Chippenham’s stand out customer service
Chippenham BID is delighted that the second consecutive customer service mystery shopper experience has returned even better results than last year’s, showing that Chippenham really is a great place to live and shop. 85 town centre businesses opted into the 2018 mystery shopper programme, and they were given a 2-month window in which they could expect to speak to a customer who would score them on a range of criteria. The programme focused on customer service, rather than the industry-specific mystery shopper programmes used by many companies. The goal was to understand the experience of a generic customer who comes to Chippenham. 7 of the 85 businesses received an incredible 100% positive feedback, with Jollyes Petfood Superstore achieving full marks for the second year running. The vast majority of businesses that took part gained scores to shout about, with 57 businesses scoring at least 85% positive feedback. The businesses that achieved 100% positive feedback are Bewley & Merrett Funeral Directors, British Heart Foundation (Furniture and Electrical, Elkins Architects, Jollyes Petfood Superstore, Chippenham Museum, Platinum Mortgage Solutions and The Citadel Hall. Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham BID said, “There aren’t many opportunities to be told you’re doing a good job in the world of work, especially if you work alone or in a small team, and this mystery shopper experience has done just 20
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2018
that. Whatever the results each company gained, this has been a chance to stop and think about the experience a customer will get when they visit your business – and overwhelmingly the answer has been one to be proud of.” The results overall have shown an impressive increase on last year’s mystery shopper programme, which had the same criteria and weighting. The average score across the 85 businesses that took part was 86.2% - up 4.9% on last year’s results. Tom Paget of Awdry Bailey and Douglas, Chair of Backing Business (the committee that funds the project) said, “Whilst large chains regularly use mystery shoppers to monitor and improve their stores, smaller businesses often do not have access to this resource,
meaning they miss out on the opportunity for valuable feedback. It is part of Chippenham BID’s role to support these businesses by providing a means to evaluate current practices, offering support where possible and giving recognition for their success. Mystery shoppers are a great way to achieve this and the excellent results are something Chippenham can be proud of.” Photos: top row left to right: Platinum Mortgage Solutions Chippenham Museum Elkins Architects Centre row left to right: Jollyes Petfood Superstore British Heart Foundation Lower row left to right Bewley and Merrett The Citadel Hall

Brinkworth began life as a small hamlet owned by one Miles Crispin, who had the fortunate advantage of being a relation of Gilbert Crispin, the then Abbot of Westminster. Along with Brinkworth came at least five other holdings in Berkshire, Surrey, and more. In 1870-72, one John Marius Wilson wrote in his Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Brinkworth is an expanding village and parish within the boundries of Malmesbury. Shaped like Africa, it stands on a headstream of the River Avon, some three and a half miles West North West of Wootton Bassett. Now recognised as the longest village in the country, it stretches for some 4.2 miles alongside the busy B4042, between Royal Wootton Bassett and Malmesbury. St Michael & All Angels Church stands at the centre of the village. It was probably during Saxon times that the first church was built in Brinkworth, with remains thought to date from 1151 being discovered. The present church dates from around 1360 but this has evolved much over the years into the church that you see now. A small primitive Methodist chapel was built in Brinkworth in 1828, but closed its doors for good in 1975. With its pretty cottages and old world charm, Brinkworth is a pleasant place to visit, and has somehow managed to retain most of its peaceful and historical way of life for all it is a thriving village.

Sunday 3rd June
Hosted by Chippenham’s very own Super Mario, Chippenham’s Soap Box Derby will take place on Sunday 3rd June from 12-4pm throughout the High Street, where hand-made, non-power assisted karts will manoeuvre the course past crowds of spectators and businesses complete with obstacles and ramps! Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said: “Last year’s inaugural Soap Box Derby was hugely popular, and we’re excited to be working on this year’s event. We’ll be joined by local groups, including a special opening performance from Dancing Academy. This is a chance for friends, organisations, clubs and business teams to show off their creativity as well as their speed, with a range of prizes up for grabs covering more than just the fastest kart.” Councillor Sandie Webb, Leader of Chippenham Town Council said: ''The varied designs of the hand-made carts last year showed that there is no limit to the ingenuity of the competitors. It was both a competitive and enjoyable event that attracted families, businesses, local groups and residents, and look forward to more of the same this year." The Blues Band Thursday 21 June | 7:30pm | £26 Featuring Paul Jones (Manfred Mann), Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher. Many of the Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when these five virtuosos, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could have predicted that, 40 years on, they’d still be dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising. Tel: 01249 446699 Book online at www.neeld.co.uk Provided by Chippenham Town Council www.chippenham.gov.uk

Swing Birds
Sunday 13th May sees the fourth annual outing for Swindon’s only all-female big band – Swing Birds. This year, due to popular demand, they are migrating to the Wyvern Theatre, in Swindon, to allow even more music lovers to flock to the spectacle that is “Swing Birds and Roundabouts”. As well as tried and tested big band classics, Swing Birds also feature exceptional arrangements by talented local musicians. Blues and wartime-era swing are blended effortlessly with current hits from the likes of Taylor Swift, many featuring their fabulous vocalists. What will they surprise the audience with this time?! Our special guest will, once again, be the immensely talented drummer, Crissy Lee. Crissy has been drumming all her life and is widely acclaimed as being Europe’s finest female drummer. A distinguished career has seen her travel the globe, appearing on numerous TV shows and sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest celebrities, even touring with the Beatles. Swing Birds are delighted to be supporting Swindon Cares at this event, to help raise money for The Nelson Trust and Swindon Women's Aid via a collection on the night. So come and experience the joy of live music, delivered as only Swing Birds can – with style, panache and more than a little humour!

HMRC’s Let Property Campaign If you rent out a residential property, HMRC need to know the total amounts received and expenses you’ve paid for, even for periods when the property was empty. If you’ve missed the submission date for a tax year - or even a few tax years, sign up to the Let Property Campaign with HMRC. After signing up for this process, HMRC will give you 90 days to send them the figures and your tax liability will be calculated. Penalties will be reduced because you made the initial step. Also, if you can’t afford to pay the tax in a lump sum, they will agree an initial payment followed by monthly payments. The DDS form can be found on HMRC’s website; filling this in online will inform HMRC of your decision to sign up for the Let Property Campaign, and HMRC will send you a Disclosure Reference Number to use for the process. Food allergies – they’re not to be sneezed at! … says nutritional therapist Helen Adams, of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic
S
OME people start suffering from hay fever symptoms at this time of year and may have Oral Allergy Syndrome (also known as Pollen-Food Allergy Syndrome). This is very common among hay fever sufferers and means the allergy responses are connected to the mouth, causing itching and swelling of the lips and the tongue. The protein structures of the pollen produced by some grasses and trees are very similar to that of different fruits, vegetables or nuts. Allergy is a response of the body’s immune system to a normally harmless substance. The most common are pollen, food and household dust mite. The body sees them as a threat and rushes to protect itself from them. Helen said: “When your immune system reacts to pollen, it can get confused by the similar food structures and can mount a reaction to the foods. “While these collections of foods may appear entirely random they’re linked by their botanical plant families. The Umbelliferae family, for example, contains celery, carrot, coriander, dill and parsley among others.”
Some examples of pollen about in the environment include: SILVER BIRCH TREE POLLEN – February to April These fruits could be connected: Apple, cherry, fig, kiwi, lychee, nectarine, pear, plum, peach, prune and strawberry. These vegetables could be connected: Beans, carrot, celery, green pepper, onion, parsnip, peas, potato, spinach and tomato. Herbs and spice which might cause a reaction are – anise, basil, caraway, chicory, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, marjoram, oregano, parsley, paprika, pepper, tarragon and thyme. 48

Helen said: “Sufferers don’t react to any of these foods when they are cooked as cooking breaks down the allergen’s protein structure, and protein is what causes an immune reaction.” Helen Adams sees hay fever and allergy symptoms in her clinic every week. She has now published her first book to help those with allergies, food intolerance and sensitivities to make healthy food choices and understand what’s happening to their digestive symptoms. “I Don’t Know What to Eat? – the Definitive Guide to Food Allergies, Intolerance and Sensitivities” is published in paperback and e-book. It can be ordered from her website. Anyone worried about their allergy or hayfever symptoms can book a 30-minute free discovery consultation with Helen at her Chippenham-based clinic, either in-person or by telephone.

RUNNING & FITNESS COACH
When is it time for new Running Shoes?
O
by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
• If your running shoe bends in the middle easily (the support has therefore broken down).
NE of the most important investments any runner can make is in a good pair of running shoes and in my experience most problems and injuries occur when people run in running shoes that are old and battered.
What to look for when buying new running shoes
One of the first things to remember about running shoes is that they are a consumable so even though you may have had them for a long time and may not have run many miles in them, you do need to be mindful of whether they are effective. When we run our foot strikes the ground approximately 800 times per mile with a force of about 8 times our body weight. The job of the running shoe is to cushion this impact, stabilise the foot and neutralise any biomechanical imbalances that you may have when you run. If you think of the cushioning of the midsole of a trainer as being similar to bubble wrap and every time you strike the ground some of the bubbles burst, after a period of time all the bubbles will have burst and you will end up with a flat un-supporting midsole where there was once cushioning. The knock-on effect of this cushioning breaking down is that the rest of the support and structure of your shoe also breaks down which can result in injury as you are not running as efficiently as you once were. As the breakdown of your running shoe happens slowly, it may be hard to pinpoint exactly when you need to replace them,
• Buy the real thing: Get a quality pair of running shoes; not tennis, aerobics or cross-training shoes, but shoes made specifically for running. Expect to spend between £90-£120 for a good model from a serious manufacturer. • When you shop for shoes, do these three things: (1) Go late in the day, when your feet are their largest (feet swell during the day and during running); (2) Bring along the socks you’ll wear while running; and (3) Have both feet measured by a salesperson, even if you think you know your shoe size (one foot is often larger than the other, and you’ll need to be fitted for the larger foot). • Be fastidious about fit: The shoes you buy must fit properly to work properly. A good-fitting shoe will feel snug but not tight. There should be room at the front of the shoe to allow your feet to spread during running. Press your thumb into the shoe beyond the big toe; it should fit between the end of your toe and the end of the shoe. In the rear foot, your heel should also fit snugly so the shoe will hold your foot securely. • Take the shoes for a test run in the shop: As you run, pay attention to how your toes feel: are they sliding forward? Do they feel pinched together? Also, notice your heels: are they sliding out of your shoe slightly? In general, are the shoes comfortable? If not, try another pair.

WILDLIFE
Animal Attractions Adventures with Animals in Wiltshire
It’s often said we’re a nation of animal lovers and it seems it’s true. According to figures for 2017 there are currently around 8.5million pet dogs on the UK and eight million cats. It’s no surprise then that attractions which involve looking at or interacting with animals are popular. There’s also plenty of evidence to suggest interaction with animals is good for our wellbeing. As summer approaches and the weather improves we’ve rounded up a few animal attractions in Wiltshire which may make a fantastic day out.
LONGLEAT Longleat land of adventure is several family days out – but all in one place! Until September in the Main Square, you can meet the planet’s greatest predators in an awesome new animatronics exhibition. Moving models – of everything from a life-sized hunting Great White Shark to a super-sized Venus Flytrap – feature in their own environment with their unique adaptations explained. In the Main Square, it’s also still a jungle – desert, ocean, and lots more besides – out there! Attractions include a Cruise on Half Mile Lake; Penguin Island; Jungle Kingdom’s meerkats; Gorilla Colony; Monkey Temple; a Miniature Railway, Adventure Castle, and Family Farmyard! A Safari Drive-Through tour shows Anne the Elephant, Wolf Wood, Tiger Territory, Lion Country, Cheetah Kingdom, and Big Game & Deer Parks; while you can walk to the African Village! Finally, there’s Longleat House – Elizabethan architecture with grand rooms – and ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland and pleasure gardens to explore! All-inclusive day tickets cost from £22.27 child (3-15 years) to £29.70 adult. www.longleat.co.uk

ROWDEY COW What better after a busy day exploring than to consider visiting the Rowdey Cow ice cream parlour and café near Rowde – with some farm animals to watch and a kids’ play area – for a fresh ice cream made on their farm from their own cows’ milk. Animals to view include miniature Shetland ponies, goats, sheep and of course cows! A glass-fronted café offers spectacular views of Roundway Hill and the surrounding farmland. There’s outdoor seating in a garden, with patio and the children’s playground.
BARBURY HORSE TRIALS The St James’s Place Barbury Horse Trials in July (July 5 to 8 this year) is among the highlights of the summer equestrian calendar. Over four days the best international riders and horses compete in the sport of eventing.
They serve fresh ice cream in up to 16 different flavours which change daily. Their café offers cooked breakfasts, lunch, and pre-booked afternoon teas every day – all sourced from local produce – with home-baked cakes and coffees.
It’s setting, on the spectacular Marlborough Downs, is unparalleled – and this year the popular event will have a new look to it, with even more attractions running alongside the top-class sporting action. The Shetland Pony Grand National is coming to Barbury for the first time, as is dog agility – with a celebrity competition, and spectators bringing their own pooch to have a go themselves. There is also a new ‘kid-zone’ this year to keep children entertained and energized.
In Rowde on the A342 Chippenham to Devizes road, the café is open every day. Breakfasts are 9am - 11.30am, lunch 11.45am– 4pm – for more information visit www.rowdeycow.co.uk
There will also be a range of carefully selected tradestands and quality food stalls alongside a bar and excellent hospitality opportunities. Visit www.barburyhorsetrials.co.uk to buy tickets and for more information.

There are deer - Winston the muntjac, Freddie the tame fallow, and two white fallows - wallabies, Shetland ponies, American miniature horses, donkeys, llamas, cows, sheep and pigs. You can also walk alpacas and pygmy goats, hold a tortoise, chipmunks, a bearded dragon and pets such as rats and guinea pigs in the petting area, and see various birds including barn owls and poultry. In May, new arrivals include baby goats, lambs, calves, a parrot and skinny guinea pigs.
GREATWOOD EQUINE CHARITY Greatwood – the horse rescue and welfare charity – is holding its first-ever family horse show this summer with a variety of both ridden and in-hand classes. Established in 1993 Greatwood is the only formerracehorse welfare charity that will never turn away a horse at risk, in danger of neglect, or suffering. It was also the first UK equine welfare organisation to use exracers to educate children, young people and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Spectators are welcome for free to the Greatwoood 2018 Horse Show – supported by The Prowting Charitable Foundation and in association with the Retraining of Racehorses (ROR) charity – on Saturday June 30 at Rainscombe Hill Farm, Clench Common, near Marlborough. Starting at 9am, for competitors there are ROR classes, unaffiliated show jumping, in-hand showing, clear round, and amateur ridden flat-work classes – with entry from £5 per class. Dogs are welcome and free parking too. See www.greatwoodcharity.org
GEORGE VETERINARY GROUP Did you see The George Veterinary Group on BBC Countryfile recently? Their practice was first featured last year, but huge public interest led to the production team rejoining their vets before Christmas to visit farms and equine yards to meet owners too. The team at the Malmesbury practice are now looking forward to a one-hour special compilation programme nearer next Christmas! The cattle, reindeer, horses, chickens and sheep featured were only some of the variety of animals they look after every day. More than 40 vets work across four dedicated departments, including caring for pets. They strongly advise keeping dogs safe when travelling – and never leave them unattended in a parked vehicle, even with the windows down. From ‘Countryfilers to Countryphiles’, you may meet a ‘George’ vet at a summer event, either on standby at horse shows or judging local dog shows. See www.georgevetgroup.co.uk
Activities include animal feeding, kite flying, trainspotting, long trailer rides with quiz, play area, and picnic spots. Farmtastic also has drinks and limited hot food. Parking is free and entry prices are babies free, child £5.50, adult £6.50, and family (2 adults/2 children) £22. www.farmtasticanimalfarm.co.uk The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2018

GARDENING GARDENING
Y
Ground Control
OU can’t go wrong with a geranium. They grow well where other plants struggle, particularly those shady areas, or parts of the garden with poor soil. And they are so useful - they provide hundreds of pretty flowers and also smother the ground with a welter of leaves that prevent weeds from taking hold.
Geranium macrorrhizum is probably the most reliable ground cover of them all. It creates a low dense mass of aromatic hairy leaves about 30cm / 12 inches high. The flowers open in late spring and there are varieties in white, pale pink or magenta.
Don’t confuse these hardy geraniums with the tender bedding plants with the horseshoe leaf-markings. They may be commonly called geraniums but they are in fact pelargoniums and not hardy so would perish in a hard frost. True geraniums are as tough as old boots. There are loads to choose from offering a wide range of colours and habits. If you want a carpet of tiny pale pink saucer flowers try Geranium sanguineum striatum. It’s great for growing in the crevices of a garden path, or even in a shallow tub or sink where its finely cut leaves show of the flowers to their best advantage.

Propagation is ridiculously easy. Simply rip up a clump of the thick creeping stems and push them into the ground where you want them to establish. Make sure they don’t dry out and you can be assured of success. If you’d like a plant with a bit of height go for Geranium psilostemon. This grows to about 1.5m / 5 feet. It has deep magenta flowers with a black eye, and is a great self-seeder. If you struggle with a patch of denser shade I can recommend the blue-flowered Geranium himalayense, and also ‘Johnson’s Blue’. Both will form clumps about 30cm / 12 inches high. Whether you have a new garden which needs to be filled with colour, or an established garden with a few bald patches, plant hardy geraniums and you won’t be disappointed.
These are followed by bright red seedheads providing interest well into the autumn.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES
New DS 7 Crossback 2018 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups At first sight, the DS 7 Crossback shows off conservative, rather than cool, characteristics. Yes, yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But this is my opinion, and someone needs to have one. On the move, body lean is kept to a minimum, even though the steering is spongy and dead - and it isn’t perked up by changing the DS into its Sport mode. Don’t let me rain on the DS7 Crossback’s parade too much, though. The French motor is best kept in its Comfort setting, so that you can make the most of its respectable ride quality. This car isn’t all about the zero to 62mph sprint, it’s far happier as a laid-back cruiser. But it can still pull okay, with the 2.0-litre diesel model doing the 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds. The DS marque is launching the Crossback with four different trim levels, and the Performance Line DS 7, as driven here, is likely to be the model to please the masses. This car gets 19-inch alloys, a gloss black
grille, and LED lights. In the cabin, leather and Alcantara abound, while a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen hogs the limelight. Playing second fiddle to the big display is a large analogue clock, perched above the ignition button.
fore and aft. Indeed, the DS 7 Crossback’s flat floor means that a rear seat occupant sitting in the middle will still have space. What’s more, the car’s boot is generously proportioned with 555 litres of cargo capacity.
The infotainment system itself is intuitive and responsive and is supported by a bunch of touch sensitive switches for the cabin controls. But more remarkable in this car segment is the adding of an infrared night vision camera that projects a vivid picture onto the driver’s display. It picks out pedestrians and animals ahead of you, and, as I found out driving around Berkshire’s unlit backroads, it works! The only drawback is that the clever driver aid is an option costing £1600.
The all-new DS’ weak point is its price-tag. At over £30,000, other more established premium brands may seem more attractive. The BMW X3 and Volvo XC40 are examples of the stiff competition the upto-the-minute French machine is up against.
Room in the cabin is good for fiveup and it’s a very comfortable car
Still, being different is quite appealing, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2018 holds for the DS 7 Crossback. Watch this space! FAITH MATTERS
Many Happy M
Returns!
aybe you’re someone who loves a good Birthday Party. I can really enjoy someone else’s party, but if I’m honest, I am not quite so keen on celebrating my own. I just don’t like being the centre of attention. I remember my surprise 40th birthday party some years ago now. It took my cousin and her husband quite a lot to persuade me to go with them to my sisters one Saturday evening near my 40th birthday. I was unshaven and not really dressed for the occasion. SURPRISE! everyone shouted as I walked through the door of my sister’s house. I remember my embarrassment but also how moved I was that they had all thought so much of me that they wanted to celebrate one of my life’s milestones. On 20th May this year followers of Jesus all over the world celebrate a birthday. It is what they consider to be the birthday of the Church, and the start of the church’s mission to the world. It’s called Pentecost. It’s celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after Easter (the name comes from the Greek pentekoste meaning “fiftieth”). It is the festival when followers of Jesus celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the followers of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity or God-head of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It’s the way we Christians understand God. At Easter the Church celebrated Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and 39 days later they remember the time that Jesus ascended back into heaven. But just before Jesus was taken up to heaven he told his followers that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came on them and they’d be his witnesses in the whole world (Acts 1:8). He also told them earlier that the Helper, the Holy Spirit would be sent by the Father, and that he would teach them all things and remind them of everything he said to them (John14:26). As the disciples were together to celebrate the end of the grain harvest, they would have offered two loaves of bread they had made from their harvest and offered two lambs to God. This was their way of
68
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2018
thanking God for the weather and for the harvest that year. But as they came together to thank God, suddenly a sound like the blowing of a strong wind came and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Next they saw tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. When the tongues of fire came they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages. At that time there were people of many different nationalities staying in Jerusalem who spoke different languages. The people ran over to see what all the noise was about and were surprised to hear their own languages being spoken. Things must have sounded weird! Imagine all those people speaking many different languages at the same time and shouting out praises to God excited that something amazing from God had just happened to them. It was no surprise that some of the crowd started making fun of them and started to think that they were drunk. When one of Jesus’ followers, Peter, started to hear the rumours he spoke to the crowd. He explained that they weren’t drinking wine because it was only nine in the morning. Peter called them to repent (which literally means to ‘turnaround’ or re-orientate yourself to God) and be baptised so that others would know that they believed in God. Now, because of Jesus death and resurrection people could be forgiven and receive the Holy Spirit. (You can read the account in Act 2: 1-40). So Pentecost was a really important day for Jesus’ followers and is also for us now because we too can receive the Holy Spirit and can ask for forgiveness. And when we’re ready to ‘turnaround’ and live a life pleasing to God the Holy Spirit becomes part of us so we have God’s power within us, helping, challenging and encouraging us all the time. So Pentecost is a birthday worth celebrating I think. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

BOOKS
A Good Read
The Private Patient by PD James
......................................................................................... At a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’ The operation is a success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets.
with real and believable traits.
This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn,
killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas. There is also a significant amount of tying up of loose ends from the ongoing stories of Dalgliesh and his colleagues, and the ending is rich and reflective. Some would argue that James’ novels are an acquired taste, being so far from the run of the mill ‘whodunnit’ – I would say they are a taste well worth the acquiring.
The Foggy, Foggy Forest by Nick Sharratt
......................................................................................... This delightful picture book may take some tracking down, but the effort is well- rewarded. Each page takes the reader on a journey through the ‘foggy, foggy forest’ of the title, asking ‘What can this be?’ The beauty is that each page is printed on acetate, and shows a mysterious silhouette, encouraging us to guess at what lies beyond. The answer, of course, is never straightforward! The book works on a number of levels – younger children will love the repetition and the rhyme as each shadow is revealed, whilst older readers will appreciate the fine details of Sharratt’s colour illustrations and the humour which finds ‘Cinderella and Snow White in a water pistol fight’. Like the best fiction for very young children, the book stands up to reading and re-reading (and re-reading, and re-reading....). It deserves to become a children’s classic.
For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the
