Hills kit out Calne FC for a seventh season The Hills Group has continued its longstanding relationship with Calne Town Football Club by renewing its sponsorship deal with the Toolstation Western League club for a 7th consecutive season. Gary McKinnon, divisional director Hills Waste Solutions, joined the team for the official photo (pictured front row, centre), before their first home match of the season and commented: “Calne Town Football Club is on our doorstep and many of our employees live in the town

so we are really pleased to continue our support. We wish the Lilywhites every success in the 2017/18 season.” Calne Town FC chairman Garry Murphy added: “Hills’ sponsorship has been an integral part of this football club for seven years. We are a community club and we

try to bring people together. We still need funds to improve and maintain facilities like the clubhouse roof, however Hills is part of the heartbeat of this club and long may that continue". Calne Town Football Club in their new kit for the 2017/18 season.

Chippenham gymnast proves it’s never too late to learn! A CHIPPENHAM mum who only started gymnastics four years ago, after seeing how much her daughter enjoyed the sport, has finished near the top of a national competition. Emma Kiely competed across the floor, beam and vault in the Adult Gymnastics British Championships at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Telford this month. The 39-year-old came sixth in her age group for the novice category, advancing on her 16th place in 2015 and 12th place in 2016. Now she hopes her continuing progress will encourage other adults to consider enrolling for classes. Emma was introduced to the sport by her daughter Cerys, now aged 12, who trains at Chippenham Moonraker Gymnastics Club at The Olympiad Leisure Centre. Emma said: “I’d never done anything more than basic forward rolls and cartwheels when I was a child but always wished that I’d had the opportunity to do more. “I used to stand on the balcony watching my daughter training below, wanting to know what it was like. “Then the club started an adult gymnastics class four years ago and I decided to try it. I was rubbish at first but my flexibility and strength improved massively and I gradually became more confident. “The coaches pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to learn new skills. Now I’m hooked!” Emma is now a part-time coach at Chippenham Moonraker Gymnastics Club, working with the recreational and development gymnasts. Head coach Steve West said: “We’re all so immensely proud of what Emma has achieved and how far she’s come in such a short space of time. “She’s an inspiration to the older generation and we now hope that her success will encourage other adults to join our classes.” Adult sessions are held every Thursday and Friday evening from 7.30-9pm. Tall Tree Theatre: Shackleton Sunday 15th October, 3.30 pm Kington Langley Village Hall Mr Middle has created a life of routine for himself and his loyal dog. Together they enjoy their evenings in and simple walks, but Shackleton longs for more adventure. Not one for surprises, Mr Middle keeps his world as small as possible but one day the garden gate is accidentally left ajar, which offers Shackleton the chance to look beyond what he has always known. As he follows his senses and goes exploring, his trepidacious owner is forced on an exciting journey of his own where he must rediscover his adventurous past and break his routine to find his beloved dog. “Amazing show, such a lovely gentle tale. Shackleton came alive for us and we went on an emotional adventure. Very clever, brilliantly performed. Children and adults alike were transfixed…” Audience member “He was a dog, but not a real dog, a pretend one. But he was just like a real one. He went on an adventure when the gate was left open. And I loved him.” Audience member Shackleton is aimed at children aged 4+ and their families. The show combines live music and puppetry and, through exciting language and an original musical score, Shackleton explores what possibilities await us if we step out of our comfort zone and try something new. Refreshments will be available before the show, provided by Langley Fitzurse PTA. Special ticket prices for this family show: £7 full, £6 concessions (senior citizens, students & benefit claimants), £3.50 children (under 16), £17.50 family (2 adults & 2 children). New landlords at The Duke, Hilmarton After a successful career running hotels, restaurants and most recently Cricklade Leisure Centre near Swindon, Gary Walker has taken over at The Duke, Hilmarton, between Lyneham and Calne. With his wife Carol, a former logistics manager for a large Swindon truck company, Gary is planning to make The Duke at Hilmarton the best pub with rooms between Swindon and Calne. “The Duke is in an incredibly convenient location: on the main A3102 between Chippenham and Swindon,” he said. “We’ve got great pub accommodation, and a large field on the other side of the site for overnight caravanners.

10

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Our views over West Wiltshire are remarkable and this is part of what make The Duke a great overnight stop-over.” The Duke was built in the 1850s, named after the Duke of Beaufort, who’s Badminton Estate lies to the West of Hilmarton village, but he didn’t want his name associated with a pub, so it was called a hotel. Rumours persist that tunnels ran from the inn to the village on the other side of the road. “Unlike the 19th century Duke of Beaufort, we’re proud to call ourselves a pub with rooms, not a hotel – after all, The Duke is owned by Wiltshire’s oldest brewery,” added Gary.

Community’s baking and pedalling efforts aid Wiltshire Air Ambulance SUPPORTERS of Wiltshire Air Ambulance baked cakes and cycled through the countryside to raise funds to keep the charity’s helicopter flying and saving lives. The fun and challenging fundraising took place during National Air Ambulance Week (last week). Dozens of individuals, nurseries, schools and businesses got involved in Bake Off for Lift Off, the charity’s theme for Air Ambulance Week, by holding cake sales and picnics.

Kenresa Stratford, Fundraising & Events Co-ordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “This has been a truly memorable Air Ambulance Week for us. Bake Off for Lift Off has proved very popular and people have been busy in their kitchens baking cakes and holding cake sales. Our Great Big Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Sunday was a great success and we’d like to thank Haydens Bakery, based in Devizes, for sponsoring it.

The charity also had bucket collections all over the county and held its own Great Big Teddy Bears’ Picnic on The Green, Devizes, on Sunday (17 September) with the charity’s paramedic bear mascot, Wilber. Rounding off Air Ambulance Week was the Wiltshire Big Wheel cycle ride, which also took place on Sunday. Starting and finishing at The Green in Devizes, people cycled 12, 45 or 100 miles.

“As well as enjoying lots of cake, our supporters also got on their bikes to take part in the Wiltshire Big Wheel cycle ride. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in the Wiltshire Big Wheel and Bake Off for Lift Off and raised funds for us. Their superb efforts will help us to keep flying and saving lives.”

Among those taking part was Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charity Ambassador Lauren Booth, a Champion Para-cyclist of Chippenham. A number of Wiltshire Air Ambulance charity team staff and aircrew also tackled the ride as did supporter John Phillips, 73, of Semington. Mr Phillips completed the 12 mile route in memory of his daughter Michelle Phillips, who died in a car accident in Devon 13 years ago. Mr Phillips cycled on the mountain bike that Michelle used. He said: “It’s the first time I have taken part in the Wiltshire Big

Melksham Food and River Festival Saturday 2nd September dawned with bright blue skies, sunshine and lovely warm temperatures; King George V Park looked glorious and ready for a fantastic day of fun, adventure and competition. The Town Crier got into the swing of things very quickly by testing out the new attraction across the river: the Cooper Tires Wire Challenge. Following his plucky example, many others – young and old – took the plunge, and the Wiltshire Outdoor Learning Team was kept busy all day ensuring that all-comers had an exciting and safe trip across and back. They were also kept very busy supervising the 7.3m climbing wall, which was so popular. The Raft Race competitors had a brilliant time paddling their excellent homemade craft (bizarrely including a raft disguised as a wedge of cheese, crewed by staff from Melksham based dairy firm Coombe Castle) up the river and back. This year, both junior and senior categories were won by the Chippenham Young Farmers, and both teams were delighted to receive their medals plus £100 prize for each category very generously donated by Foxhangers Boat Builders. Again on the river, MCC Branch, plus a few very welcome friends from further afield, organised boat trips, offering two boats: Damselfly and The Mary Archard, which were popular all day. There were in fact numerous damselflies and dragonflies flying around the boats, and the swans, cygnets, ducks, moorhens, house martins, swallows and even kingfishers obliged by putting in appearances for many passengers – a truly magical day on the beautiful River Avon. 16

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

The Wilderness Boats, glorious steam launches, canoes and kayaks all added to the wonderful adventure commonly known as ‘messing about in boats’ and it was great to see this normally quiet waterway being used by so many people having so much fun. The Wiltshire Youth Canoe Club (WYCC) was offering Try Canoeing sessions, and instructors were kept constantly busy. The end of the afternoon saw crowds of people enjoying picnics and the odd drink (or two) from Box Steam Brewery, enjoying listening to the Warminster Military Wives Choir, followed by the Legendary Cross Guns Singers – a real festival atmosphere. The final treat was a sail-by of the Wilderness Boats decorated with lights. On Sunday, the main event day, saw the arrival of over 70 stalls selling a huge variety of great food and drink in addition to the river activities. The Leekes Country Kitchen Marquee certainly came into its own, delivering both entertaining demonstrations and a perfect venue for the chilli-eating competition with standing room only as hundreds enjoyed watching a few heroes abuse their taste buds with chillies of increasing heat. The boat rides continued despite the rain, although there was a reduced number of visitors both for these and the WOLT activities. Frankie, the honorary canal horse, continued to give horse rides, and the funfair and Barry the facepainter were kept busy. Much food and drink was consumed and enjoyed, and a great deal of fun was had by all, thanks to the efforts by the event organisers, the sponsors, many volunteers and Melksham Council.

Chippenham energy company volunteer in National Trust park clean up Employees from Chippenham-based renewable energy provider, Good Energy, stepped outside the office this week to volunteer their time at the National Trust’s Dyrham Park estate, near Bath. The volunteering day, which marked five years of partnership between Good Energy and the National Trust, saw the team donning gardening gloves and picking up rakes, spades and axes to help get the grounds of the property into shape ahead of the autumn months. Hannah Darby, Director of Domestic Customers & Marketing at Good Energy said: “We had a fantastic day at Dyrham. From bagging bulbs and raking cut grass, to tidying the lawns and cleaning the lake, it was a perfect opportunity to use our energy for good and bond as a team.

“It was also great to strengthen our partnership with the National Trust even further and we’re already looking forward to volunteering at more sites in the future.” Despite its national network of volunteers, the National Trust greatly relies upon volunteers and donations to remain operational; and large groups enable them to get the time exhaustive jobs completed. Pippa Churcher, a member of the Outdoor Team at Dyrham Park, said: “We rely on lots of volunteers to help us do our important work, looking after places of great historical and natural importance on behalf of the nation. It was great to have the Good Energy team come and lend a hand for the day – the orchards looked great after a day of hard work!” In partnership since 2012, Good Energy has been working alongside the National Trust as its green energy partner to help them to meet their goal of sourcing 50% of their energy from renewables by 2020. Some of Good Energy’s 100% renewable fuel mix, which it provides to thousands of homes and businesses around the UK, is generated by the Trust, including from hydro turbines at Hafod y Llan in Snowdonia and a waterwheel at Aberdulais Falls near Neath. Bowood’s Autumn

C

APABILITY BROWN’S 2,000 acre Grade 1 listed parkland at Wiltshire’s Bowood in its autumn colours is a sight to behold! The legendary landscape designer’s encircling belts of trees and punctuating arboreal clumps tune into autumn as their seasonal maroons, crimsons, scarlets, oranges, yellows and golds emerge. Bowood’s arboretum is among the finest in the country. Over the coming weeks Bowood House and Gardens will be embracing its great outdoors with a line-up of treats for all ages.

Half-term week (Monday 23 until Sunday 29 October) features a harvest festival inspired Scarecrow Trail (11am-3pm). The route will head first to Tractor Ted’s Little Farm, on into the Adventure Playground down to Bowood House’s distinctive Terraces, taking roughly one hour to complete the trail. Apple Festival Saturday 21st October, Brinkworth Saturday 21st October is the day of Apple Festival at Sunday Hill Farm, the home of Sir Roger and Lady Scruton, who will be opening their farm to visitors, and providing entertainment, instruction, local produce, and the chance to explore a beautiful piece of the Wiltshire landscape. Entrance will be free of charge, but £20 will also entitle visitors to attend a talk, at 11.30 a.m., by Sir Roger, one of Britain’s most distinguished philosophers and broadcasters, on the theme of living landscape. In addition the day offers a farmers market, with wonderful local produce, meat, vegetables and Ceri Cryer’s world famous (well, Wiltshire famous) Brinkworth and Bassett cheeses. Artists and eccentrics will present their goods, including several new producers bringing ceramics, woodcraft and olive oil. Andy Howard of the Heritage Fruit Company will present his countless varieties of apples and pears and there will be a chance to taste samples too! Neighbouring farmers David and Emma at Fernhill Farm will be BBQing again this year with their tasty burgers and hot dogs available, as well as delicious coffee from Coffee Gang, and homemade treats from Angela Vines and Lucy Scruton. As a climax to a wonderful day out playing live from 2pm, Newton Country, a talented local student band, already featured on Radio 2, will entertain the company with their inimitable mixture of folk, rock and Johnny Cash. Not to be missed. Over four hundred people attended last year, and we have received many messages of gratitude. We are sponsored by Horsell’s Farm Enterprises and the James Dyson Foundation, and the profits will be divided among worthy local causes including the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Everyone is welcome, and the farm will be open to roam. Gates open at 10.30am. For talk tickets please call or email Izzy in the farm office. Westonbirt Arboretum

O

NE of the most diverse and extraordinary arboreta in the world, Westonbirt’s collection of 15,000 rare and remarkable trees make it a unique space to escape, relax or have an adventure. The Victorian Holford family had a vision – to create a unique arboretum, filled with beautiful, rare and unusual trees from around the world. They worked to collect together trees and shrubs, brought back to England by plant hunters who had travelled the globe in search of the rare and remarkable, and laid out what they had gathered aesthetically; the result is one of the most beautiful tree gardens in the world. Today, the Forestry Commission continues the mission of the Holfords, evolving the tree collecting and making it accessible to everyone throughout the year. The vibrant autumn colours of Westonbirt Arboretum are world renowned – as September turns to October the leaves swap their greens for the vibrant reds, oranges and purples and the landscape transforms into a riot of breath-

taking colours – the perfect backdrop for keen photographers. Discover the best this Autumn season has to offer on our seasonal trail – highlights include Acer Glade in the Old Arboretum and the National Japanese Maple Collection in Silk Wood - many of our other broadleaved trees show wonderful colours as they lose their leaves alongside conifers changing too! Or you could soak up some culture on our all new poetry trail, go on a guided walk to learn more about the landscape, or explore off the beaten track to discover a hidden gem.

Why not join us on one of our events, free after admission: Seed Spectacular 23 – 27 October Half term family event Investigate the amazing variety of seeds to be found in the arboretum, with different arts and crafts activities to be found on each day including: seed printing, acorn rolling, and berry juice painting. Wonders of Westonbirt Guided Walk Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11am and Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 11am and 2pm Until the end of October Secrets of Silk Wood Guided Walk Sunday 1 October 11am Discover the magical hidden gems and history of the ancient Silk Wood on this dog friendly guided walk. Burnham Court in Malmesbury welcomes new resident

Annie has always been active throughout her life. She has always been keen to try new things, get up and about and is always looking for the next activity, never letting anything hold her back. But when her needs started to change, Annie wanted to live somewhere she could retain as much independence as possible but with the reassurance that help was on hand should she require it. Burnham Court offers just that; self-contained independent living apartments where you can enjoy the privacy and space of your own beautifully finished flat, with staff on-site 24 hours a day just in case you need them. There’s also a strong emphasis on being part of a friendly, active and vibrant community; Burnham court offers a relaxing communal lounge, a restaurant, a hair salon with nail bar and wonderfully landscaped gardens, all there to be shared with like-minded people.

Mrs Annie Sillars, 91, is one of the first residents at Abbeyfield’s Burnham Court in Malmesbury and, since moving in, she hasn’t looked back.

Annie said: “Moving in here is one of the best decisions I’ve made as I can continue to do everything I love without any fear at all. Better still, I’ve made a whole bunch of new friends in the process which makes my activities that little bit more fun!

Sculpture Parks

T

HE sculpture parks and trails of England are a rather well-kept secret. They are found all over the country and are great places to visit and introduce the kids to real art. They are also good introductions to for anyone who is curious about art but feels they would be a bit out of their depth in a gallery. You can take a picnic and the children can run around. Many are free, or very cheap to enter. Each sculpture park is different in character depending on the surrounding countryside. Why not have a day outdoors and take in some culture at the same time? Our picks of the parks are:

Yorkshire Sculpture Park – with pieces by Elisabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormley New Art Centre, Wiltshire – set in beautiful lovingly planted gardens. Burghley House and Gardens, Stamford – My children loved this when they were tiny. There is an additional garden of surprises with quirky water sculptures that children can play in.

Vertical Face, by Rick Kirby at Burghley House Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, Gloucestershire – 20 sculptures set along a trail which takes about three hours to walk round. The Pride of the Valley Sculpture Park, Surrey – An enormous number of sculptures, and a varied landscape including lakes and woodland. Broomhill Art and Sculpture Garden, Devon – More than 300 sculptures in 10 acres of land!

BOOKS

Ozone Hotel

Sci-Fi fantasy genre welcomes a ‘Camp Classic’ by new North Wiltshire Author R. K. Williams "I very much believe The Ozone Hotel is a metaphor for creative freedom. While there are intricate plot twists which I hope will please sci-fi geeks, it has lashings of glitter and glamour too.” R. K. Williams’s partner Steve Smith is a BAFTA award-winning television director best known for The Graham Norton Show. Steve said, “After years working as a TV director with celebrities, I’m delighted to be able to help my partner promote his books and share his creativity.” This autumn the world is about to be granted its very first glimpse inside the Ozone Hotel. This innovative gender-blending sci-fi novel written by newcomer R. K. Williams is described by comedian and writer Stephen Fry as a new ‘camp classic’. An exclusive members’ club beyond even the constraints of time, the Ozone Hotel is the ultimate salon – a palatial edifice floating above the clouds, a playground for the most creative minds in the universe. When Mr Brown, a humble bank clerk from 1929, unexpectedly receives a Golden Ticket and boards a jet, he embarks on an adventure that will change his life forever. Please be aware no one can buy tickets for the Ozone Hotel; entry is by invitation only. Little wonder The Ozone Hotel has been described as ‘like walking through a Dali painting.’ The ‘fabulously camp romp’ has already received extraordinarily positive reviews, including a camp-tastic endorsement from the broadcaster, actor and author Stephen Fry. He said, “Checking into the Ozone Hotel has blown my mind, my imagination and all kinds of other parts of me too. An instant camp classic, but something more than that, R. K. Williams plays with sciencefiction conventions, gender, character 44

and big ideas with wild, colourful and lovable virtuosity. A Barbarella and Myra Breckinridge for the YouTube generation, The Ozone Hotel gets five stars on AcidTripAdvisor. R. K. Williams is a name to watch out for.” R. K. Williams said: “The Ozone Hotel is a place where quite simply, I would love to go. The kernel of the idea came from my student days in Leeds where like-minded friends would meet in the Palm Court lounge at The Queens Hotel. It became a salon of creative people who all dreamed of a better life.

Publisher, Vicki Watson of Callisto Green, said: “The book is a fabulous and flamboyant antidote to everyday life, a little bit of frivolity in what can be an overly serious world. R. K. Williams is an author full of sparkle, wit and imagination, and I smiled all the way through reading the manuscript. Everyone needs a trip to the Ozone Hotel!” For more information go to the website theozonehotel.com

“Curiously enough the characters lived and grew with me over the years. I started writing an early draft of the book in the mid-nineties in London. Yet in real life things changed forever in 2007 when I was diagnosed with M.E. / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Confined to my bed, I was to remain there for three years, and my imagination was all that was left in that dark place. The characters kept me company and it was there, during those ten years of illness, that I decided to complete the book. When I became a little better I would have an hour each day where I could be creative, so I would write and slowly the first fully formed manuscript of The Ozone Hotel emerged.

You could 3D print that! 3D printing has come a long way in the last few years. What started out as an ultra-expensive development tool can now be bought as a desktop gadget for a couple of hundred pounds. But what is a 3D printer and why might you want to buy one? When you make an item usually you start with the material e.g. a big block of wood or metal and then cut bits off and shape it until you get to what you want. Or maybe you start with a mould and a liquid substrate which hardens. With 3D printing you start with nothing but gradually add layers of material to build up your object in an ‘additive manufacturing process’.

groups. 3D printing is not an exact science. When you press the GO button you don’t always achieve success; you may need help to fine tune your system. As for what you can do with a 3D printer? Really the only limit is your imagination. I’ve built a plastic case for my latest Raspberry Pi project; a vase, a music stand, several fidget spinners and a replacement part for a Lego set. My seven-year-old designed and made a glow-in-the-dark sword! Take a look at www. thingiverse.com. One of the greatest bits of this technology is that you can share your designs and work and have anyone, anywhere in the world print their version of your creation. So go get creating!

by Tom Hancock

You design your item using computer aided design software (CAD) then feed it to a special ‘slicer’ program that cuts it into very thin layers which are then printed one on top of the other. The beauty of this is that it lets you create incredibly complex articles that you simply wouldn’t be able to make at home in any other way. The most common home printers (FDM printers) use a reel of plastic wire. This is fed into a heated extruder where the material is melted and then forced out through a very fine nozzle. This nozzle is then moved over a build-plate by computer to make a solid, thin layer of plastic which forms one slice through your design. The process is repeated over and over until all the slices have been stacked up, leaving you with the finished object. Price-wise you can pay anything from around £100 to a few thousand for a professional machine. At the cheaper end you tend to get 3D-printed kits (yes 3D printers making 3D printers!). But for a few hundred pounds you’ll get fully assembled, metal framed (more rigid) examples. There is a vast array of printers to choose from, but do your research and don’t underestimate the importance of helpful online user support

4KTV A few weeks ago I had to buy new television. And that’s when I first came across the term ‘4K TV’. My last set was a high definition (HD) television, but since then things have moved up a notch. So what exactly is 4K TV and is it worth upgrading? 4K, or Ultra HD, gives you about four times the resolution of a normal HD TV. This means the picture will be sharper and show much more detail, especially when viewed on larger screen sizes of more than 40 inches. The latest sets will include HDR (High Dynamic Range) making the colour depth far richer and more lifelike than anything before. When these two features are added together the result is a truly wonderful viewing experience. The catch is that to get the full benefit your DVD player, media player, or anything else you plug into your TV must also use 4K. And of course you’ll need to upgrade your movies to the new spec too. So this cost should be factored into any decision you make. Is it worth it? Well, when I saw a 4K movie playing on a large 4K screen it did look amazing. In fact so amazing that I invested in a 58 inch 4K TV and a disc player. ‘Invest’ is the right word to use as 4K will gradually become the new norm, just as HD and Bluray did a few years ago.

THE INTERVIEW

Photos supplied by ITN.

“My stories are predominantly focused on people”

Rupert Evelyn Rupert Evelyn is the ITN news correspondent for Wales and the West of England for the ITV national news. He lives in a North Wiltshire village near Malmesbury with his wife Alex and their three daughters. Rupert has worked with ITV for 16 years, nine with ITV West based in Bristol and for seven years as part of the ITV national news team. Interview by Fiona Scott Follow Rupert on Twitter @rupertevelyn 50

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Describe your job? My job is varied, unpredictable and fascinating. I rarely know when I wake up in the morning where I am going to go, who I’m going to meet and what the next story will be. My office tends to be my car, although I do have a desk in Bristol and Cardiff. We have three programmes a day - Lunchtime, the Evening News and News at Ten. Depending on the story I may appear on one programme or sometimes all three. Usually it is just myself and a camera crew working together but when a large story breaks it is all hands on deck with teams of journalists, producers, camera crews and engineers all working as one. I’m not always confined to a geographical area and this year I have covered the Manchester bombing, the tragedy at Grenfell tower and forest fires in the South of France. What is your most memorable story? My stories are predominantly focused on people and the really memorable ones are about those people who choose to open-up and share very personal thoughts and feelings with me. Listening to the parents of soldiers killed in Afghanistan, families with homes destroyed by floods or victims of an appalling atrocity is extremely humbling. Those interviewees are truly courageous and it is a privilege to share their company and I don’t forget them.

Was it always what you wanted to do? No. I originally wanted to be an actor but quickly realised that the stop-start nature of that business wouldn’t have suited me. I like being busy every day. Fortunately there are many story-telling skills that transfer from acting into broadcasting and journalism. We need scripts, characters, writers and great stories for viewers to keep watching. I worked first at the Big Issue in Bristol where I learnt a range of communication skills, then moved to radio at GWR in Swindon and Bristol and then finally into television. Why did you choose Wiltshire as your home? I’d been living in Bath before moving to North Wiltshire and my wife and I sometimes drove through the village we now live in and thought it seemed a lovely place. We haven’t been disappointed – there is a great sense of community and always lots going on. It’s an extremely good location to work from as few places around the country feel too far away. More importantly it’s a great place to grow a family and I hope our three girls feel they have real roots here. What Wiltshire stories have you reported on over the years? I attended the repatriations through Royal Wotton Basset which were always moving. Witnessing the Swindon serial killer Christopher Halliwell represent himself in court was a bizarre and troubling spectacle but you feel a sense of justice done when a man like that is put away. Military exercise with the Gurkhas was a memorably cold and wet experience but their special and heartwarming tea made it all worthwhile! This autumn I was interviewing Sir James Dyson on his new university course in Malmesbury and his upbeat view on Britain’s future.

Photos supplied by ITN.

What involvement do you have in your local community? Working a patch like Wales and the West of England – which can stretch from Cornwall to Bangor – means that I am away a lot and am unable to commit to the local community as much as I would like to. However when I know I’m going to be around I will do whatever I can – from helping at our annual village festival to trying to organise some U9s cricket matches for our local club. I also seem to have become the go-to-guy for auctioning off goodies at the annual quiz night (the organisers seem to think I am comfortable with a microphone!) Why is helping the community important to you? Great communities thrive thanks to the countless volunteers who give their time to make things happen, often in unseen ways. Clubs, festivals, sporting events and school fundraisers all need our support. I give what I can, when I can, and hopefully it helps. The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Firework Fiestas! Top tips for making your fireworks party go off with a bang … by Kate Duggan Food and decorations

A warming autumnal soup is sure to go down well with guests, and mini sparklers are a great way to liven up sandwiches. For pudding, you could decorate cakes with coloured icing in the shape of fireworks or rockets, and don’t forget the toffee apples! To make an easy firework rocket, roll a rectangle of coloured card into a tube and stick in place with double sided tape. Cut out a circle of card, with a wedge missing, roll and tape to make a cone for the top. Stick it on and attach a wooden barbeque skewer (with the point cut off ) to the inside of the tube. Fill the tube with sweets, close the bottom with a circle of card, and glue on some paper streamers. Display several in a tall glass vase. Decorate the table with layers of coloured tissue paper in red, yellow and orange, rather than a table cloth, and string party lights around the walls. You could also try attaching streamers to colourful paper lanterns to hang from the ceiling.

Drinks

Hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows is sure to prove popular with children and drivers. You could also make a warming alcoholic drink for adults, such as mulled wine, liqueur coffee or hot toddy.

Games

If you have children coming, why not keep them busy making a Guy? You’ll need to provide plenty of old material, plus stuffing. You could also pre-make a papier-mâché head using paper, glue and balloons, or buy it from a craft store or eBay. Alternatively, you could have a Guy making competition, where everyone makes a smaller Guy, or decorates a gingerbread man, with a prize for the winner. Kids and adults alike love a piñata, and you can buy them in a variety of shapes. Fill yours with sweets or small treats, such as stickers and balloons, and hang it outside from a tree. Make sure you give whoever’s swinging the stick plenty of space!

Fireworks

Most people will want to watch the fireworks from outside, so you might want to dig out some spare blankets, gloves and hats for anyone who isn’t prepared. If you’re setting off your own fireworks, take time to explain the danger to children, and make it clear how far back they need to stand. You’ll also want to ensure that any pets are safely inside. Of course, it’s safer and cheaper to take advantage of a nearby firework display. They can be seen for miles, so you may well be able to stay in your own garden, avoid the crowds and make the most of those warming drinks ...

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Two colds a year are good for you Helen Adams, founder of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic has a message for everyone as autumn sets in – two colds a year are actually good for you. “It may surprise people to know that it’s good to have two colds a year as it shows our immune system is working properly,” she said.

Another thing to take during the ‘cold’ season is zinc and for sore throats – Manuka honey – the stronger the number on it the better. This type of honey has strong antibacterial properties and can be very soothing as well as help heal the sore area. If you are sure you have caught your cold locally – a local produced honey can also helped as it will counteract a local bug in the system.

“If you are one of those people who say ‘I never get a cold’ it can mean your system is on alert all of the time and is not working as well as it should and that’s not a good thing in the long term.” Helen, who runs her clinic from Chippenham, helps people with a range of issues including weight loss, thyroid problems and cancer. Good nutrition is at the heart of Helen’s practice. “Don’t be alarmed if you get two colds a year – that’s not a bad thing. However there are steps you can take in your diet to help your body as colder weather sets in.” Helen advises that the moment you feel a slight tickle at the back of the throat, or an itchy nose take a very high dose of Vitamin C – 3 grams over three doses in a day. “Vitamin C may be much maligned but it’s wonderful for your immune system. It supports your immune system, and it kills

free radicals (yes they are real and not something made up by the cosmetic sector). Free radicals are the result of damage caused to the body when the immune system is fighting off infection and causing damage in doing so. “Vitamin C will fix that damage and it will kill off bugs so it’s very good for the body.” Helen advises getting that Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables – particularly red peppers. She says a red pepper has more Vitamin C than an orange and eating one a day will keep the immune system healthy and boost it for whatever bugs come at the body. If you are taking Vitamin C as a supplement look out for the form that says ‘ascorBATE’ rather than ‘ascorBIC’ as this is easier on the tummy. Also with vitamin C, there is such a thing as ‘bowel tolerance’. This is different for everyone, so it’s best to increase the amount you take to combat a cold gently to make sure the high dose doesn’t send you rushing to the bathroom!

56

Other foods which are good during the autumn and winter are garlic, onions and an unusual tip is to use elderberry spray which also has a powerful soothing effect on a sore throat.

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Anyone who is interested in working with Helen to improve their nutrition can have a free half hour consultation. Helen calls this her ‘Discovery’ session and from that she can suggest one of her three packages to support them through a journey to better eating and health.

BEAUTY EXPERTISE

Y

Love Your Lips! by Kelly Shaw

OUR lips are the very expression of who you are; yet with constant daily workouts from eating, drinking and communicating, the lips and perioral region can start to show signs of wear and tear. It is an area that clients often have concerns with and I am always asked ‘what can be done to help’? You can help to prevent and correct feather lines and loss of volume with targeted lip care. Looking after your lips is easy with my top tips. “I can’t live without my lip balm!” the dry lips dilemma. Lip skin is thinner than any other skin on the body… a mere 3-5 cell layers! Coupled with less oil glands and dehydrating saliva, lip skin is vulnerable to dryness and chapping. Dry lips lose volume and develop fine feather lines around the lip line. Lip balms may be a popular quick fix but they could be contributing to the issue. Heavy mineral oil based balms can confuse the lip tissue and reduce the production of natural barrier protection. The result is an addiction to the lip balm - without it your lips seem to have none of their own natural protection, are extremely vulnerable, and become severely parched and flaky; they may even split and bleed. Avoid mineral oil or petrolatum based lip balms. Rather nourish dry lips with treatments rich in plant oils such as Shea Butter, which restores the natural barrier and hydrates. “My lips have lost fullness!” the volume vanguard. After the age of thirty, we start to lose collagen the skin fibre that gives strength, tone and volume. In fact, we lose about 1% of our collagen a year from the age of thirty. It is normal for lips to suffer progressively decreased volume decade on decade because of this biological

58

“As the colder weather takes effect this is the perfect time to start focusing on what you can do” change. Keeping lips well hydrated will improve the perception of volume so be sure to moisturise your lips and apply nourishing emollients such as Shea Butter, Sesame Extract and Vitamin E, along with hydrators like Hyaluronic Acid. Look out for products containing moisturising Apple Extracts along with Advanced Volumising Technology as they can give lips a smoother look and plump fine feather lines and wrinkles. “My lipstick bleeds!” the not-soperfect pucker. The main muscle of the lips is circular and as it contracts, the skin puckers. Ageing skin loses elasticity and, particularly if lips are drier, fine feather lines can develop. Sipping through straws or smoking will accelerate and exaggerate this puckering. Lipsticks are wax based, so they warm and melt on application causing them to run or ‘bleed’ into these fine lines that radiate from the mouth. Try applying a primer to the lips first to set your lipstick. Restore the lips and area around the mouth by improving hydration and reducing roughness with ingredients such as Sesame Seed Extract. Also look to strengthen the barrier protection

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

with bioactive Indian Gentian Extract, which reduces skin fragility to minimise fine feather lines. Show your lips a little love; make sure you are including them in your daily skincare routine. Your lips will benefit from regular gentle exfoliation as well as hydrating and nourishing masks. Regular use of a lip treatment each night will not only improve your current lip condition but will defend against further deterioration of this delicate tissue. As the colder weather takes effect this is the perfect time to start focusing on what you can do to make sure your lips aren’t chapped and cracked through this Winter season. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Beauty and the Beast! Male grooming is booming!

Do you know a man who has been botoxed? No? Are you sure? Well it’s probably only a matter of time. We’re far less open about it than women, but a growing number of us blokes are considering a brow-freeze, a jowl-tighten or a love-handle-lift. On the whole we tend to favour non-surgical options and not just because we’re cowards. Male plastic surgery can look a bit unnatural. Due to the nature and thickness of male skin there can be more stretching and scarring. Of course, non-surgical procedures are also quicker, ideal for those of us who want to keep our beauty secrets secret! It’s not just surgery. There has been an explosion of interest in male grooming products recently. These now make up an £800 million-peryear market and include intensive moisturisers, eye creams and selftanners.

Beauticians have noticed an increase in the number of men presenting for manicures. We no longer think smooth skin and well-groomed hands are the preserve of females. This may be partly down to style icons such as footballers but it may also be down to basic psychology. Six in 10 men between 24 and 34 are not married and around 50% of those are single. Perhaps we’re working harder on our appearance because we’re on the lookout for potential partners. No wonder it’s become macho to moisturise...now where did my girlfriend hide her Clarins?

Also, researchers at London’s Guildhall University found that taking care of your appearance makes sound financial sense. They discovered, in a survey of 11000 British 33-year-olds, that the most presentable men enjoyed a 15% higher salary than their less wellgroomed colleagues. They were also more likely to be married; have more confidence and less likely to be kept waiting in bars!

THE BEAUTIFUL BLOKE’S TOP THREE Male Botox Have you been accused of looking grumpy when nothing is wrong? You might have ‘angry brows’. Dysport smoothes out a male frown while maintaining the heavier, masculine appearance. It lasts one to nine months and side effects can include soreness, mild headache and bruising. Very occasionally a drooping eyelid can result but this wears off as the injection does. Carboxy Therapy This is termed the ‘miracle gas’ and is a treatment for sagging jowls. Carbon Dioxide is injected just below the skin. The body responds by increasing the blood flow to that area, plumping and tightening the skin. It isn’t suitable for diabetics, epileptics or those with a connective tissue disorder. Laser Lipolysis An alternative to surgical liposuction, particularly useful for moobs! Pockets of fat are vacuumed out through tiny incisions (about 1mm thick) while a laser destroys fat cells and tightens the skin. There is some bruising and swelling and this is not a treatment for obesity.

RUNNING & FITNESS COACH

How to Breathe Properly O

by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com

NE of the first questions I am asked from new runners is how to breathe properly whilst running. If you are one of the many people who have this problem, don’t worry it can be fixed quite easily. The most common cause of being out of breath when running, which in some cases can lead to serious pain and/or panic, is that you could be running too fast too soon. Why You Should Walk If you are just starting out on your running journey then walk, allow yourself to be a beginner, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time. Try and get into the regular habit of exercising, slowly develop your fitness, give your bones, muscles and tendons the foundations they will need to becoming a runner without injury; and this can be easily achieved by putting walk breaks into your running; don’t worry, walking is not cheating or quitting, it is vital as doing too much too soon could result in you not being able to run at all or you may become demotivated and frustrated; being stuck in vicious cycle of going for a run, running too fast, feeling out of breath and out of control even after a short

amount of running time which can result in you turning back home feeling rubbish and deflated.

• Once you’ve slowed your pace, breathing can become quite rhythmic so listen to your breath and body.

Walking puts the body through the same range of motion as running, but with less stress impact on the body and lungs, you may not be moving as fast but walking builds a good base for running, a good solid foundation to build the miles upon. Adding walking breaks into your run and slowing your pace right down can make a big difference to your running, it may be the difference between you going out for 5 mins and giving up or going out for 20 mins and adding walk breaks, these walk breaks are giving your body the chance to recover and then go again. This will give you confidence and hopefully make your run more enjoyable so that you want to do it again. And if you see anyone you know whilst you are on your walking break, and to be honest this is when we usually see people, then just think to yourself, well they don't know that I haven't just finished a 20-mile training run!

• When running your oxygen consumption increases, so breathe through your mouth to get enough air in; your mouth opening is almost ten times larger than your nose opening, so more oxygen in. • Like any muscle, it will take time to strengthen your breathing muscles so be patient. • Avoid fatty foods or large meals right before your run and give yourself two hours to digest a meal, as food can play havoc on your stomach and diaphragm as you begin to breathe and bounce. • Try not to tense up as this can cause you to hyperventilate causing you to breathe in shallow, quick breaths and then running doesn't become enjoyable so relax and slow it down.

When a person gives/sells shares, investment properties etc. to a spouse, the transfer is deemed to be at a no gain/no loss value – so no CGT to pay. By transferring a half share of an investment property to your spouse prior to selling it, you can double the tax -free Capital Gain (annual exemption of £11,000). Also, if you pay Higher Rate Tax (40%) and your spouse pays Income Tax at a low rate you could save Higher Rate Income Tax by transferring shares to them. CGT & unmarried couples In contrast, when a person transfers shares or property to a girl/boyfriend, a CGT based on market value will need to be made – and CGT may be due. Valuing unlisted shares is difficult, and carries the risk of a challenge from HMRC. CGT & divorcing couples Getting married is ‘a great piece of tax planning’ (re CGT and Inheritance Tax), but getting divorced brings its own tax problems. The CGT benefits of marriage (transfers at no gain/no loss) last until the end of the tax year in which the spouses separate. After that, CGT can apply on transfers between the divorcing/separating parties even when no actual sale takes place. If one leaves the matrimonial home, and there are assets to be divided, it may be better to separate shortly after the 6th April, than shortly before, giving more time to organise the various assets before the end of the tax year. PETS

My Dog is not Fat!

D

O YOU know why it is important for your dog to be an ideal size for his breed? We all love a cuddly pooch but what are those extra kilos doing to his underlying health? What are the knock-on effects of carrying extra poundage? We all know someone whose health is affected by their weight and it is no different for our dogs. Two major health implications that spring to mind when talking about excessive weight are osteoarthritis and diabetes (insulin resistance). Extra weight on the body puts joints under pressure causing joint damage and the more weight that is carried increases the damage being done to the joints. The upshot is the more damage there is to the joints, the more pain that is likely to be experienced by your pet. He slows down because of the pain but continues to eat the same quantity of food; he puts on more weight because he cannot exercise without being in pain...so it becomes a vicious circle. Diabetes leads to a whole host of problems and deserves an article to itself; but suffice to say you want to avoid diabetes at all costs if you can.

Other problems include exercise intolerance and reduced stamina, increased likelihood of heart disease, compromised liver function and liver disease, heat intolerance, hypertension (high blood pressure), lower immune system function, respiratory compromise... I could go on... Increased risk of cancer, developing malignant tumours...I’ll stop there...you have got my drift by now. An average sized male Labrador ideally should weigh in at between 30-36 kg. But if he weighs in at 48 kg he is anything between 12-18 kg over ideal weight! Putting that in pounds he is overweight anywhere between 2639 lbs.! Or 2-3 stone over ideal weight! As a percentage (and I’m going to use averages here because my math’s is rubbish) this is 20-30% over ideal weight. Scary, isn’t it? A gain of a kilo (a couple of pounds) of fat is enough to put significant stress on your dog’s body; because of being overweight our dogs will have a poorer quality of life and a shorter life expectancy. Therefore, it is vital to the health and wellbeing of your pet to prevent weight gain in the first instance or to take steps to ensure they lose any excess safely.

Dogs are our passion at Grittenham Grooming and our main concern is the dogs’ welfare at all times. Sainsbury’s and Lackham celebrate 10 Year Partnership

Sainsbury’s Chippenham has donated surplus produce that is still healthy and nutritious, to the Animal care department at Lackham College for over 10 years. The food donation scheme is aimed at charities and organisations who could really benefit from receiving surplus fresh food products, that would otherwise go to waste. Over the years Sainsbury’s Chippenham have donated all types of fruit and vegetables to Lackham College, situated in Lacock, near Chippenham. Sally King from Lackham said “With the selection of produce we receive, it means the animals get to have some exotic fruits that they would never otherwise have. We come to Sainsbury’s every day to collect the surplus produce and we never know what we will get!” Chippenham Store Manager Val Atwill said: “We are delighted that local charities within our community can benefit from our food donations schemes. Not only do we support Lackham but also Corsham food bank, who support people and families in the local community” Paul Wexler, animal centre manager from Lackham said: “We have been supported by food donations from Sainsbury’s for over ten years now. The support has helped us offer rehoming opportunities for a range of animals, that we would struggle to care for without such help. We rehome animals of a domestic and exotic nature from around the country, which gives our students at Wiltshire College Lackham, the next generation of animal carers, fantastic opportunities to experience this fascinating vocational area of work. We are reliant on the support Sainsbury’s offer our animal collection. Thank you for the last ten years and we look forward to working together into the future. 72

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES

Volvo V90 R-Design By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups

V

OLVO estates have come a long way since their ‘wardrobe on wheels’ image. We all knew they were safe and comfortable; they just weren’t sexy. That all changed some years ago, and the last V70 looked great; perhaps even better than its saloon sibling, the S80. Then in 2016, the V90 and the booted S90 came along; two stunning cars with more than a hint of sporting appeal woven into the luxury, ride comfort and space that Volvos always offer. The models have been a success in the short time they’ve been out – but the V90 is the one that most people favour. As an estate car, it’s more practical, even though the Swedish car maker has made the load area slightly smaller than the previous V70s. For those who like versatility and don’t want the ‘conservative’ estate car image, Volvo has recently put its R-Design stamp on the V90. This means you can still drive an estate car, but one that looks hunkered down and stimulating. Yes,

74

stimulating – who’d have thought a Volvo could have that effect? The R-Design flavour has always given Volvos that extra something – it’s made the cars spicier to look at and hotter in the way they handle. The V90 R-Design is a genuine looker – a great piece of artwork all round. Its kerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm lowered ride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and flashy 18-inch alloy wheels.

The jazziness continues inside, with semi-electrically operated leather and nubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, a vivid LED driver’s display, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates. My test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a well-judged output for regular commuting. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5 seconds, but it is prudent, too. If you see over 60mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be taken aback.

SEPTEMBER 2017 The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

The V90 is refreshing compared with its rear-wheel drive German equals. It’s driven by its front wheels, and is nimbler to wield. The Volvo feels sprightlier, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering and while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from overwhelming, due to how acquiescent it is. Because of the R-Design’s lowered, firmer suspension set-up, the V90 R-Design will corner quickly without perceptible body lean. However, the drawback is that there’s no option to alter the suspension on the fly. Fall for Autumn Colour by Rachael Leverton

S

EE what I did there in the title? Terrible pun I know but I couldn’t resist! Back in the Nineties I travelled to the White Mountain region of the USA to experience the Fall firsthand. My husband still jokes that it’s the only time in my life I’ve ever been speechless! Clear blue skies, golden sun and hyper-saturated foliage colours gave the impression that the whole New Hampshire landscape was on fire. The effect was unutterably beautiful. Back home in the UK I was a woman on a mission. I had to capture some of that beauty for my own plot. Through research I discovered that the quality of autumn colour in the New Hampshire region depends on two things: the combination of tree species and the climatic conditions. The sugar maple, red oak, mespilus and viburnum are the trees responsible for the famous vivid red and purple hues of the Fall but their colourful magic is dependant on warm sunny days followed by cool nights where the temperature doesn’t drop below 7-8°C. So now I had two problems. No way could I guarantee perfect weather conditions in the UK and then there was the small issue of space...the smallness of the space being the issue! I would not be able to shoe-horn a Red Oak or a Sugar Maple into my suburban garden. So I hit the books and the garden centres and gradually I compiled a list of solid autumn performers which will put on a dazzling display regardless of the British climate.

76

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Now my garden is brim full of glorious, fiery autumn hues and with a little planning and my ‘approved’ list you too can bring a little of the Boston Falls to British suburbia. Japanese maples Varieties of Acer palmatum - both green and purple - colour well and are small enough for most gardens. They do prefer acid soil so if you live on lime they perform better in a pot. They need shelter from chilly winds, which can scorch their leaves. Dogwood, Cornus alba The leaves begin to turn pink in late September and you also have the benefit of bright red or yellow whippy stems afterwards, depending on the variety. Euonymus alatus A quirky plant which has corky, winged outgrowths on its stems. This is a quiet plant for most of the year but produces the most brilliant crimson leaves in autumn plus purple - red fruits which split to form four winged lobes with a bright orange seed in the centre. There is also a compact variety which only grows to 1m so is suitable for small gardens. Berberis thunbergii and its varieties Around 2m tall, make a great hedge and take on spectacular hues around October just before the leaves fall. Coloured leafed heathers These work hard all year but are at their best when burnished by the autumn chill.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Are you planning to landscape your garden? Create a patio? Construct a garden room? Prepare footings for a new conservatory? Many homeowners seek to reduce costs on home projects like these by doing a lot of the work themselves. At the beginning of 2017, research showed more than a quarter of homeowners were planning a home improvement project during the year – often conservatories or building works will be involved. The hardest and most labour intensive work tends to be during the preparation stage and Wiltshire-based company Tiger Plant can help make that kind of work easier.

For example a microdigger which is small, and easy to operate costs £150 (including VAT) to hire for a weekend. The team can also hire out a tracked barrow which can carry up to half a ton of material. This is very useful if debris or earth has to be moved from the back of a home to a skip placed on a drive way. The barrow costs £120 (including VAT) to hire for a weekend but for the rest of 2017 hiring them together will attract a discount. For those undertaking projects at home who are not confident about operating a mini digger themselves – a trained operator can be hired in to help for a day to move the job along – though higher costs will apply to cover their time.

Andy Rohrer (above), co-director of Tiger Plant, said: “Hiring in equipment to help with these projects can save hours and doesn’t cost the earth. A mini digger hired for the weekend can get the job done much faster than trying to dig footings, level a garden, remove tree roots all by hand.” The team at Tiger Plant – which has an office in Swindon and a storage unit for plant in North Wiltshire – can advise any homeowner on the type of equipment which can help them with any heavy domestic project. This may depend on access to a resident’s outside space and some the equipment will fit through a normal doorway. 78

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2017

Tiger Plant is run by businessmen Andy Rohrer and Stuart Morgan who have worked together for six years in construction and property development. The range of plant they can offer includes micro-diggers, a selection of midi-diggers and large diggers up to 20 tons. They can also supply telescopic and masted forklifts, dumper trucks, fuel bowsers and compaction machines. To discuss any job – large or small, domestic or commercial, feel free to get in touch.

Carve the Best Pumpkin Carving Jack O’ Lanterns dates back to an old Celtic holiday, Samhain. People carved scary looking turnip lanterns and lit them with candles to ward off spirits. When the Irish migrated to America, they found that pumpkins grown there were much easier to carve so adapted their custom. My children love to carve pumpkins. Oh who am I kidding, my husband and I love it too and over the years our designs have become more ambitious. Here are a few tips. Start with the right pumpkin. It should be fresh with a sturdy stem, no bruises and a flat bottom so it won’t roll. A smooth one is easier to carve and if you can find one with a flatter ‘face’ so much the better. Use proper safety pumpkin carving sets. No-one wants to spend Halloween sat in the accident and emergency department dressed as Dracula’s Bride. Ok that was the one year I did NOT use proper pumpkin saw and I was more at risk at dying

from embarrassment than the blood loss but don’t risk it folks. Cut the lid using the saw angled in towards the stem. That way the lid won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it.

Carve the tiniest sections first. Then carve the areas in the centre of the pattern, and then work outwards. That way you can rest your hand on the uncut bits of pumpkin, not your carved-out design.

Scoop out all the pulp and some of the flesh - an ice cream scoop works brilliantly.

Rather than always cutting all the way through the pumpkin try just removing some of the skin. The yellow flesh underneath will glow when lit up from inside.

You can now download patterns from the internet. These are terrific if you have limited artistic skills like me. Tape the pattern to the pumpkin (make little cuts around the edge of the pattern if the pumpkin is a bit too round, and that way it will fit better). Then use a pin or small nail to puncture the paper and the outer skin of the pumpkin at intervals of around 1/4 inch / 0.5 cm, or even closer for intricate designs. If it’s difficult to see your pokedout pattern, rub a little corn flour or baby powder into the dots. The dots will turn bright white and your design will magically appear.

Spread Vaseline on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If you have to carve it a few days in advance and it shrivels you can revive it with a face-down soak in cold water. Pumpkin carving is a great activity for all the family. You can make it competitive, or have a theme for your pumpkins, or invite friends over for a pumpkin carving party. Just don’t end up in casualty wearing a wild wig and face paint. A safe Halloween is a Happy Halloween!

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Pumpkin Pumpkin is a fruit or, more technically, a winter squash, and is commonly used to make soups, bread and desserts - and of course for the ever-popular Halloween past time of pumpkin carving. Pumpkins take between 90 and 120 days to grow and each has around 5,000 seeds that if stored can last up to 6 years. They. High in iron, the seeds can be roasted to eat. The flowers that grow on pumpkin vines are also edible. Planted by seed, Pumpkins grow best directly sown into the ground in late spring, preferring rich, welldrained soil. They will need plenty of water and growing vines are very delicate. Harvest when ripe with a deep orange skin.

A Good Read

When I Was Invisible by Dorothy Koomson

......................................................................................... We have all felt invisible at times. Whether it is in the staff room at work where everyone else is chatting and you feel left out. Or waiting to be served somewhere and it seems as if everyone else is being served first. But what if the one person you feel you should be able to turn to when things go wrong ignores your plight? This novel tells the story of two girls with the same name. Veronica (Roni) Harper and Veronika (Nika) Harper met when they were eight years old and knew they were immediately destined to become ballerinas. However, life doesn’t always go as planned and both girls, now in their thirties are living invisible lives: one is a nun and one is living homeless on the streets of Birmingham. Neither planned to be there and the story of how they got there gradually unfolds, told in the first person by both Roni and Nika. What ultimately lies at the heart of this is a betrayal that ran so deep it destroyed both friendships and lives. As Roni leaves the convent overwhelmed by guilt and seeks out Nika to

Crossword & Sudoku solution page 48

make amends the novel builds to a tense climax as the true nature of the betrayal is revealed and the many layers of their lives are peeled back. Some choose to be invisible in our busy society, others feel invisible and lost because of the way they are treated. This moving novel reminds us to listen to others and pay attention to their lives.

Operation Eiffel Tower by Elen Caldecott

......................................................................................... This children’s book, aimed at 9-11- year-old readers is a sweet and touching tale of four siblings who live in a seaside resort with their parents. Lauren, Jack, Ruby, and Billy enjoy living by the sea. Jack helps out at the local adventure golf course and plays the odd round when things are quiet. But life isn’t all great and the children are fed up of hearing their parents arguing. Lauren reads in one of her magazines that a weekend break in Paris is the perfect way to reignite a relationship and so the children plot to raise money to send Mum and Dad to Paris to help them remember why they fell in love. It becomes known as ‘Operation Eiffel Tower’. However, before long, Dad moves out and the children fear that they are too late. This novel deals with the break-up of a family in a realistic way, with humour thrown in. It shows that relationships don’t always work out as planned, and neither do our hopes and dreams. Will it have the happy ending that the four siblings want? And if it doesn’t have they failed, or can things still work out okay?

Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. Equity release may not be right for everyone. It may affect your entitlement to state benefits and will reduce the value of your estate. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Providus Financial Limited is registered in England and Wales, Registered Number 09594033. Registered Office 20 The Avenue, London E4 9LD and is authorised and regulated by The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) number 705852.
