Topsy turvy season at Minety After an opening match defeat to Combe Down over in Bath in early September, Minety had been up in the top three right through to January. Playing an expansive and fast game, with a settled squad, the villagers recorded fine wins against every other team in the league and were right on Combe Down’s heals at the end of December. A magnificent cup run saw Minety defeat Dorset’s Lychett Minster in the Dorset and Wilts Vase final in late November. 2016 started with a defeat in the Regional final against an Oxfordshire team but then two wins, including a 79-0 drubbing of Devizes, suggested that Minety had carried on where they had left off before Christmas. Sadly, that run of form floundered in the mud recently. With the pitches at Minety unplayable during most of January and February, and training very difficult to arrange, the village team has suffered three straight league defeats to leave them in 5th place, some way off promotion. The last match will be at home to Combe Down on the 23rd of April. Andy Ward’s sides have always been entertaining to watch; now is the time for them to maximise their efforts to finish the season as they started it. Minety’s rugby season doesn’t end with the last league match. The Minety 7’s competition, an annual highlight of the village’s sporting calendar, is being held on Saturday 7th May and is a great day out for all the family. There will be 18 men’s teams competing along with a outside bar, BBQ, bouncy castle and a few games stalls, please come along to support the event and enjoy a cider in the sun. This popular programme contains Beethoven's great Symphony No 3 (Eroica). Originally it was dedicated to Napoleon but Beethoven dropped the name after the threat of losing his Royal patron. A year of success! Bell 429 helicopter. The stateof-the-art helicopter is faster than the previous helicopters WAA has used, enabling a rapid response to incidents within minutes. The Charity leases the Bell 429 from Heli Charter.
Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) has been operating since 1990, but 2015 was the first year as a stand-alone air ambulance using its own new state-ofthe-art helicopter, a Bell 429. For the previous 24 years WAA shared a helicopter with Wiltshire Police.
David Philpott, Chief Executive of WAA, said: “All of us in the charity team, the aircrew and our volunteers are proud to provide an essential helicopter emergency service for people living, working and travelling through Wiltshire and surrounding counties. We can only provide an air ambulance service because of the generosity of the public, businesses and grant making trusts, who raise funds for us day in and day out. On behalf of everyone at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, thank you for your continued support.”

Wiltshire Citizens Advice clears up pension jargon baffling consumers “Flexi-access drawdown”, “open market option” and “safeguarded benefits” are some of the pension terms most confusing for consumers, reveals Wiltshire Citizens Advice The local charity, which delivers face to face Pension Wise appointments in Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath says people would find it easier to understand their pensions if the industry used simple, standard language to describe their products. Some people are also unclear about terms which appear to be more straightforward, putting them at risk of missing out on the best pension options for them. For example; staff have reported cases where consumers wrongly believed that their ‘selected retirement date’ was set in stone as the date they could access their pension, when in fact they could have accessed their savings ahead of this date.

To help people get to grips with their pension, Pension Wise guiders have identified the pensions jargon which people find most perplexing and have explained them in simple terms. Recent research from national Citizens Advice shows more than a quarter of people with defined contribution pensions feel that they don’t understand their pension plan, while fewer than one in five feel very confident. Albert Ball, Pension Wise Project Manager said: “Pension decisions can be hard enough without having to translate tricky wording. Many people coming to visit us are mystified by the jargon being used and our staff are here to help clear up the confusing language. Having a better understanding of what the terms mean puts consumers on a better path to choosing a retirement option which suits them.” To book a free face to face or telephone Pension Wise appointment, if you are over 50, call 0300 330 1001 or visit www.pensionwise.gov.uk. You can also book an appointment for a later date by visiting your local Citizens Advice office.

as the nearby church had run out of space for graves until they were right around the vicarage. So the building was carefully taken down brick by brick and reconstructed on its current site. This position was chosen so that it’s front door step would be exactly the same height above sea level as the top of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
HE Pear Tree at Purton is one of Wiltshire’s most respected family run hotels. It was previously the vicarage for the village of Purton which is on the border of Wiltshire and the Cotswolds. It opened in 1987 and is now managed by the second generation of the Young family – Alix Young and her husband Tim Baldwin. Anne Young, who originally opened the hotel, is still involved in the day-to-day management. In 2015 the hotel won the Cesar Award for Country Hotel of the Year by the Good Hotel Guide. It’s featured in the guide every year since 1992. It’s also won a Green Tourism Award in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 and its kitchen team have won two rosettes from the AA and three restaurant awards from the RAC. The Pear Tree prides itself on great customer service, good food and competitive rates. There are 17 rooms and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner including non residents and is a popular destination for Sunday lunch. It is dog and child friendly with only one house rule – all visitors, including canine, have to say hello and get lots of fuss! It is also a wedding venue, suitable for smaller weddings and is licensed for ceremonies. The team can

cater for up to 50 people. During 2016, the team are offering a wedding package for £2,016 for up to 25 people. The oldest part of the building is the fireplace in the library which has been dated to 1430 when King Henry VI was the monarch. Although the building was originally the vicarage for the village of Purton, it wasn’t on its present site until 1912. It was moved, or so local folklore says, The fireplace
Today The Pear Tree is also known for its garden. Anne Young is passionate about gardening and takes great pride in the grounds. She’s redesigned the creating a lavender path and a wetland, wild flower meadow as well as a 600-vine vineyard as well as three beehives. Visitors can enjoy the wild flower meadow, buddleia walk and the copse of native oaks as well as the magnificent garden surrounding the hotel. Since 2010, hotel guests have also been able to enjoy The Pear Tree’s own wine Cuvee Alix, Cuvee Anne and, from 2015, its first rose Cuvee Rosie.

Soda Bread Makes two loaves BASIC RECIPE INGREDIENTS 500g plain white flour 10g salt 4 tsp baking powder 300ml buttermilk Flour for dusting METHOD

inches / 5-8 cm thick. Cut a deep cross in the top of the loaf (cut almost all the way through but not quite) and stab lightly all over.
Add a couple of large handfuls of dried fruit to the mix. Raisins and sultanas, or chopped dates work very well.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Allow to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes and eat warm with butter.
Try a half-and-half mixture of plain and wholemeal flour and add a spoon of black treacle to the mix. It makes a denser, sweeter soda bread which is great with cheese.
Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas mark 6. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the liquid slowly while mixing to make a dough.
Thinned yoghurt or half milk to water works instead of buttermilk if you don’t have any.
Knead briefly, divide into two and shape into rough rounds. Pat to flatten until about 2-3
Experiment with flour mixtures. Spelt flour and rye flour make tasty additions.

VARIATIONS
Or using half plain and half wholemeal flour, add a couple of handfuls of chopped walnuts and a couple of tablespoons of honey. Try switching the buttermilk for beer (works best with wholemeal flour) The variations are endless.

Spring has Sprung! to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry.
DIGGING is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will

PRING is the perfect time to explore a new area, and there are certainly plenty to tempt you on to the road. Kids will love to explore the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, with its outdoor sculptures, rope bridges and ‘jungle’. Or how about a trip to Escot in Devon, where they can run riot through the maze, see otters being fed, watch wild bird displays and play hide ‘n’ seek in the woods? Book into nearby Yellingham Farm B&B, or camp at Crealy Meadows Caravan and Camping Park, where you can also take advantage of the adventure park, with its huge indoor play area, sandpits and rides for all the family. A good day trip can feel like a mini-break in itself. National Trust properties

are usually a pretty safe bet. Choose between castles, forts and other historic buildings, or just spend a few hours wandering through the parklands or gardens. Cliveden in Buckinghamshire is a good choice for garden lovers: its Italianate Long Garden has been planted with some 20,000 sweet-smelling hyacinths, while the Water Garden will be awash with cherry blossom, wisteria and magnolias. Or why not just pack a picnic and head off to the beach or woods? Check out Walking Britain for some inspiration. www.walkingbritain.co.uk If you fancy going a bit further afield, try Morzine in the French Alps. In the winter it is a popular skiing destination, but at this time of year it’s quieter. The scenery is still
stunning though, and there’s certainly plenty to keep you busy. The mountain biking trails are among the best in the world, but there are also plenty of more leisurely sports to enjoy, including golf. How about nabbing a last minute cruise deal? If you crave the sun, Dubai is a good bet, with temperatures in April reaching 32°C. Wander around the street markets, from the Gold Souk, to Deira Fish Market, and then have a coffee in the Ramada Dubai hotel where you can admire one of the world’s tallest stained glass windows. You’re pretty spoiled for places to stay in the UAE, but the Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf at Madinat Jumeirah is a great choice, as it’s one of the top rated hotels on Trip Advisor.

This is a gripping thriller. It’s a little slow to get going, but as it gathers pace it is almost guaranteed you will not want to put it down. Taylor manages to capture in great detail the excitement of a holiday with your friends to exotic places where time stands still and you have the freedom to relax: the novelty of travelling without your parents. In this case Emma and her friends travel to Nepal to a yoga and meditation retreat: a girlie trip to help one of them get over a break-up. But the idyll is soon revealed to be anything but, and before the end of the novel two of the party will be dead. Exactly how and why is ‘the lie’ of the title. Or is it? Is ‘the lie’ instead referring to the need to convince ourselves that life is good, and normal? Emma is living ‘the lie’, through her assumed identity of Jane. No one would ever guess what had happened to her which means the letter can only have come from one person.

Is it a good idea to set up our family business as a Partnership?
For more information please call Liz on 0844 8000219
www.tumbletots.com/swindon
There are so many reasons NOT to set up a Partnership in your position, here are some: - Generally they’re less tax efficient than Limited Companies. - Partners must pay Class 4 National Insurance . - All Partners are responsible for all debts. - They can result in disagreements without a legal agreement. Here are some advantages to a Partnership over a Limited Company structure: - Income can be apportioned more flexibly between Partners (but please get a legal agreement) - The rules are less rigid than for Company dividends. - Partners’ cars can be more easily used to save tax.

Corsham Walking Festival by Julia Tyte, Publicity
W
E’RE holding our second full Weekend Walking Festival on 17th19th June and will be offering 17 walks of varying lengths, to suit all abilities, including a short accessible wheelchair friendly walk, (carers free). Of special interest to those in Chippenham is our new linear walk on Saturday, from Chippenham to the Pewsham Locks, along the Wilts and Berks Canal, then to Lacock and back via the Ladbrook to Corsham Campus. We’ll be using a number of experts to talk about specialist subjects en route, which proved so popular last year, as well as having our expert walk leaders to guide you. There’ll be walks covering Quarrying, Geology, Railways, Canals, Wildflowers, Singing, Children’s Free Treasure Hunt, “Walkies“ for dogs and a “Mindfulness” Walk; so there should be something for everyone.
Corsham WALKING FESTIVAL 17th -19th JUNE 2016
30
Many walks start from the new Springfield Campus,

with free parking, though some start from locations around the area offering a wider range. We’ll be holding a Saturday evening Supper and Quiz at The Campus, to which all are invited, walkers and non-walkers. We’d love local clubs and groups to bring a team to our evening event and compete for “The Golden Boots” Award. Our website www.corshamwalkingfestival.org. uk which will have all the walk details on it. Brochures available from the start of April at the Library & Tourist Information Centre, or download via the website where booking opens 4th April. See you in June, get those boots on and let’s hope it’s sunny!
