“Our fantastic cycling event, the Wiltshire Big Wheel/100, is a great way to explore our beautiful county. For those who want an adventure further afield, we’re looking for intrepid explorers to take on one of the wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China. Walking the Great Wall of China is on many people’s bucket lists and we are absolutely thrilled to offer this once-in-a-lifetime experience. “If you prefer running we have places available for the Bath Half Marathon, which is taking place on 12 March 2017. Or if you want to take in our beautiful county from the skies, we can even help you organise a sky dive. Whatever you do to challenge yourself, you’ll be supporting and making a real difference to our vital work.” For more information about Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s challenge events email kenresa@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk or visit www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Inspired by their beautiful rural location in Wiltshire, BEDSA (Brinkworth Earl Danby’s School Association) set about organising a West Country themed fundraiser for local people, using as many local contractors and produce as possible. The idea proved so popular that tickets sold out within 3 weeks.
The Wurzels at Brinkworth
A
LOCAL school parents association has hosted a fundraiser with a difference. The West Country music legends “The Wurzels” played to hundreds of people at the Brinkworth Recreational Ground on 10th June raising over £6,000. The Rec was festooned with bunting, awash with local Mates cider, Weighbridge ales and filled with the scent of locally sourced produce from Thomas of Malmesbury butchers being cooked by Manor Events. Corky, the agricultural hip-hop artist did a fantastic job of starting the feel good factor and the welly wanging competition was hotly contested. The Wurzels topped the evening with an energetic set including all their most popular tunes accompanied by enthusiastic backing vocals from the crowd. Very generous support was received from local businesses providing funding, equipment, time and prizes.

Swindon Men deliver Peak Performance
Once again, the Wessex Male Choir has won international acclaim for its performances and has helped to put Swindon on the map. The Choir will hold a ‘Real Men Sing’ open evening on 27th September at the Church of Christ the Servant, Elstree Way, Abbey Meads, Swindon at 7.30pm. Why not go along for an informal ‘try’ and join them for a beer afterwards.
The award winning Swindon-based Wessex Male Choir has just returned from the Alta Pusteria International Choral Festival in the beautiful Italian Tyrol. They sang alongside over 80 choirs from 18 different countries in a variety of locations up and down the Pusteria Valley.
Photo: The Wessex Male Choir in the Dolomites.
The Choir certainly hit the high notes during the opening event of the Festival, performing at an altitude of 2,275 metres (7,460 ft) on the summit of the Plan de Corones, where they enjoyed a very warm reception from the festival goers and the other choirs. Guy Edwards, the Choir’s Chairman said…. ‘We could not have asked for a more beautiful location: clear blue skies surrounded on all sides by the mountains. It is a memory we will cherish for many years to come. We made many new friends and received invitations to go and sing in Australia and Canada’ The Choir received a standing ovation at a concert in the Gustav Mahler Hall in Dobbiaco. Later, the Choir processed through the streets of Sesto with the other choirs and sang in the main square, where the Choir’s Musical Director, Katrine Reimers, had the honour of conducting the massed choirs of over 3000 voices in a rendition of Verdi’s Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (Va, Pensiero). 14

Sevington Victorian School How do you boil a life down into just 20 objects? That’s the task facing the trustees of Sevington Victorian School as they prepare for a special exhibition of the life and works of Miss Elizabeth Squire. Miss Squire ruled the schoolroom at Sevington School for more than 60 years. She left such a mark on theplace that when she died, the school room was locked and everything remained exactly as she left it. You can still see her high chair and blackboard, her cane (rarely used) and the map of the British empire. There are inkwells and reading books and all the resources she used in her long career. On Sunday August 14th you can come and see the school and view a special pop up exhibition featuring some of the objects that were important in her life. The Pear Tree, Purton A Day in the working life of Tim Baldwin, Reception Manager at The Pear Tree Purton on Radio 5, I can then hear the 6 o’clock news while getting ready. I usually stroke one of our cats who are around waiting for their breakfast. Unsurprisingly our cat Noisy likes to chat to me in the morning while Bubble just likes a cuddle.
Photo: Tim Baldwin, reception manager with his wife, Alix Young, hotel manager. What time do you get up? I have a four month old baby so do not need an alarm! If I’m working an early reception shift then I’m up and about just before 6am and downstairs by 6:15am. I’m lucky I have the shortest commute as we live at the top of the hotel so just need to walk down two flights of stairs to get to work. I don’t have to worry about traffic jams or scraping the car on an icy morning now!
What’s the first thing you do? I wake up to Wake Up To Money 16
What are main morning tasks? The start of my shift can be busy as I help with taking breakfast orders and serving breakfast (not cooking it as I’d be useless and burn it all the time) and checking guests out. I then catch up with the chefs in the kitchen. If Head Chef Adam is working then it may also involve a football discussion, if it’s Chris then he’s usually explaining what’s wrong with his motorbike! I also deal with recruitment, catching up on any of the tasks hotel owner, and my mother-in-law, Anne has set me.
What do you love most about your job? Meeting people. We’re very lucky to have regular hotel and restaurant guests that return to us. It’s always nice to see them again. We were really touched by all the gifts that our guests and local Purton-ians brought in when my wife gave birth.
What’s your key to success? I think the Pear Tree succeeds for the big reason that we are family run and have a close team that have worked here for a while. Anne knows how everything works round here, Alix brought in lots of fresh ideas, the reception, restaurant and kitchen teams have worked together for quite a while. We also all care that our guests enjoy their time with us. It’s this very personal service that I think is rare.
What do you do after work? Like many new fathers I come home and wind the baby up just in time for bedtime so I generally mess with my son Charlie, mess with the cats and then go to bed.
What do you do for lunch? As I only have a short commute back home I stroll upstairs and usually find Alix, my wife, has made something nice. I also get to say hello to my baby Charlie. If Alix and Charlie aren’t around it’s usually soup and toast for lunch.

What’s On
Take part in Bake Off for Lift Off !
W
National Air Ambulance Week 19-25 September 2016
ILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) is encouraging people to get their bake on and raise money to keep its helicopter and crew flying and saving lives. The charity’s theme for National Air Ambulance Week (19-25 September 2016) is Bake Off for Lift Off and it is calling on individuals, groups, schools and businesses to join in the bakerelated fun. Kenresa Stratford, Fundraising Co-ordinator at WAA, said: “We’re hoping that this year’s Air Ambulance Week will be bigger and better than ever as we Bake Off for Lift Off and we’d love as many schools, communities, groups, businesses and individuals as possible to take part and get their bake on. From holding bake sales to bake offs and pudding parties, there are lots of ways to get involved. “Air Ambulance Week is always popular in Wiltshire and we’ve chosen a baking theme this year as we’ve found that many supporters have raised money for us through bake sales and they are a brilliant and delicious way to raise money. It would be great if people all over Wiltshire did their bit by baking and raising money to enable our helicopter to keep lifting off and saving lives. Homemade Ice Lollies
D
O you share the same childhood memories of summertime as me? When it got hot, did you take out the ice cube tray, fill it with diluted cordial and eagerly wait for it to set so that you could enjoy impromptu homemade ice lollies? And were you usually disappointed when you came face to face with crunchy, crystallised cubes of weakly flavoured water rather than the delicious, mouth-watering, thirst-quenching, temperaturecooling creations you were expecting?! Legend has it that the ice lolly was invented in 1905 by an 11 year old American boy named Frank Epperson, who accidentally left a glass of soda with a mixing stick poking out of it on his porch overnight. The next day, he found he had made a delicious frozen treat. Regardless of their origin, homemade ice lollies offer endless possibilities. Orange and lemon, minted milk, strawberries and cream, pineapple and coconut, 20
grapefruit and campari or vodka and tonic are just some of the flavours you could try. To avoid the disappointing results I experienced, here are a few tips to ensure success at the freezer. 1 Make the mixture too strong. Cold numbs the taste buds, so add extra lemon juice, balsamic vinegar or even chilli to give the lolly oomph!
2 Sugar improves the taste and softens the texture. Too little will result in a solid block of flavoured ice; too much will result in a lolly that is partially liquid. Healthier alternatives to sugar include date syrup, honey and coconut sugar. 3 When filling the mould, leave about 5mm at the top to allow the mixture to expand. 4 To make sure the sticks stand upright, freeze for about an hour and then insert the sticks. Alternatively, cover the top of the moulds with foil, make a slit and insert the sticks through it.
The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016
5 Freezing quickly reduces the amount of ice crystals. Turn the freezer to the coldest setting and place the moulds at the back. Lollies on average take around 4-5 hours to freeze but set faster, the higher the water to sugar ratio. Alcohol slows the process, with too much alcohol resulting in a slushy lolly! 6 To un-mould, immerse in hot water for 20-30 seconds. Dip just below the top rim and pull hard on the sticks to yank the lollies out. 7 Store frozen lollies in sealable freezer bags or waxed paper. Make sure they are airtight to prevent ice crystals from forming inside. 8 For super quick lollies, simply freeze pieces of fruit. Cover bananas in peanut butter or chocolate spread before freezing or blend fruit puree with plain yoghurt.

AVE you ever had a holiday ruined because of over-exposure to the sun? I have. It was 2007 and I was in Mauritius. I’d been snorkelling, fascinated by the marine life I was observing, oblivious to the sun beating down on me. Once on dry land, my back started to blister and I developed oozing sores that needed medical treatment. Sun-starved as we are in this beautiful, verdant land of ours, it is easy to overdo it in the brilliant white sunshine of foreign holiday destinations, and sun burn is just one condition we may suffer from. Prevention is always better than cure, so here are a couple of tips to keep your holiday happy and carefree!
First, try and limit exposure to the sun during the hottest hours (around 12pm-3pm) and apply sun screen liberally 30 minutes before going out. Dress in T shirts instead of strappy vests and wear a cap or hat. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and be sure to carry bottles of water with you when outside. To avoid dehydration, the body needs to take in more fluids than it expels. A fall in water and salt levels can result in nausea, faintness and heavy sweating. So, have fun in the sun this summer but don’t come back over cooked! The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016

Britain’s Waterways by Kate Duggan
There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them? Take a stroll: From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike, our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are car-free. The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com. Cycle: Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www.sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride: Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www.waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off. Try canoeing: Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit 22
The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016
while exploring the countryside. Check out www.canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www.canalrivertrust. org.uk Feeling adventurous? We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson. Cast off: A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches. For more information about Britain’s waterways, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk.

Quadcopters by Kate Duggan
Q
UADCOPTERS, or drones as they’re also called, are similar to remote controlled helicopters, but have four rotary blades. They’re a lot of fun to fly, but there’s more to quadcopters than just a zoom around the park. Many of them come with inbuilt video cameras, or the ability to attach a camera, so you can film a bird’s eye view of the area they’re flying over. With a quadcopter, you could take aerial shots of your village, check out places that are inaccessible by road or foot, and capture some of the beauty of gliding over a lake or fields. Quadcopters can also be used for practical purposes, such as checking whether there are any loose tiles on your roof. You will want to be careful where you fly your quadcopter; as your neighbours likely won’t appreciate you taking shots of them sunbathing in their garden. Some quadcopters are primarily designed for outdoor use, some indoor, and some are multipurpose. They start at around £30, but you do get what you pay for. The camera quality on the cheaper models is pretty poor. They’re also usually smaller, harder to fly and have a lower range, so can’t go as high or far. A high-end quadcopter with a professional high definition video camera can set you back more than £3,000.
24
Drone racing is becoming increasingly popular, with events held around the UK, and you can buy kits to make and customise your own quadcopter. If you’re looking to use a quadcopter for commercial purposes, you will need to register it with the Civil Aviation Authority, and undertake a training course to get a Permission for Aerial Work. You’ll also likely need to get public liability insurance. If you just want one for fun, the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider is a good beginner’s model. Priced at around £50, it has large detachable wheels, so you can manoeuvre it along the ceiling and up and down walls, as well as in the air. The wheels also protect the blades when it crashes (which it will). You control it using your smartphone and it’ll do tricks such as 360° flips. I’ve never had much luck flying remote control helicopters, but find this one surprisingly responsive for the price. Outdoors you can get speeds of up to 11mph and
The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016
a height of 20 metres. It is very small and light, so the camera isn’t the best, and you’ll want a spare battery as each charge only lasts a few minutes, but all in all it’s a good entry model. Even if you just buy a small, cheaper quadcopter for personal use only, there are some restrictions on flying it, so do visit www.quadcopters.co.uk for more information.

PUZZLE CORNER
That Summer in Ischia by Penny Feeny
Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again. Twenty-five years later Liddy, back in England, is walking her dog on the beach when she sees a young woman who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-year-old daughter. As she befriends her the mysteries surrounding the events of that summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself. The action switches between location and time periods as Fenny unveils the events that changed so many lives. Her descriptions of Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

Anna Jacobs
A
NNA JACOBS is the fifth most borrowed author of adult fiction in the UK library system – and she lives in Wiltshire. Well, she spends half the year here, near Royal Wootton Bassett, but lives in Australia the rest of the time.
She’s been busy! Her 75th novel came out in May – in the same week she turned 75. She’s ignoring the idea of retirement. Who wants to retire when you love what you’re doing? She’s also trying to ignore getting older, but that’s a bit harder.
into the history of that area. Her recent historical series is set in an old Wiltshire manor house called Greyladies at the beginning of the 20th century. Her modern Peppercorn series is set in an imaginary town ‘near’ Swindon and there’s a third modern story queuing up on the ‘back burner of her brain’ waiting to be written.
Peppercorn Street and Cinnamon Gardens have delighted readers because Anna likes to mix people of various ages in her tales, not just focus on one age group. Well, that’s what it’s like in real life, isn’t it? And she can guarantee you a happy ending because she gets to choose!
These days Anna writes complex historical and modern stories about families and relationships. Her latest series of stories is set in an imaginary Lancashire town called Rivenshaw just after World War 2, a time she remembers clearly because she was four when the war ended. She met her father for the first time that year as he’d been serving in the Middle East.
Anna’s always been fascinated by how ordinary people lived in the past. Because of the bombing there was a huge housing shortage in Britain after the war, and the Rivenshaw series focuses on a group of returned service people trying to set up a building company. Men and women are working hard to make a new life, but the past can sometimes hamper that.
The books are: A Time to Remember, A Time for Renewal, A Time to Rejoice and Gifts for Our Time. The last book won’t be out until January 2017, but the others are now being avidly read by Anna’s many devoted readers.
Anna also writes novels set in Wiltshire – of course! She couldn’t live anywhere without looking 28
The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016
Finally, if you fancy a trip to Australia, try Anna’s ‘Traders’ series, about migrants to Western Australia in the 1860s and 70s. (Yes, she’s researched Australia too!) Most Australian novels are set in Sydney and the Eastern States. As Anna lives in the west, 2,500 miles from there, she uses her own state as background, which gives a different view of the Antipodes. Western Australia has a very different history.
There is a lot of information on Anna’s website: www.annajacobs.com and you can read the first chapters of all her 75 novels there. Anna Jacobs: Historicals – A Time to Remember, A Time for Renewal, Legacy of Greyladies, A Time to Rejoice Modern stories – Peppercorn Street, Cinnamon Gardens, Tomorrow’s Path.
WIN A SIGNED COPY OF “HEIR TO GREYLADIES” Anna Jacobs has kindly donated one signed copy of Heir to Greyladies to be won by one lucky reader. To be in with a chance of winning please email your name and a contact number to production@towncriermagazine.com. The Editor's decision is final.

Gardening
Funky Foliage by Rachel Leverton
W
E all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special.
leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer.
But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.
It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant.
Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze,
Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or
manure at planting time and mulch well. .. preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade. I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety ... just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in your-face foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage.
