Wiltshire BOBBY VAN Trust

HARITIE S • C

The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust celebrated its 20th last year. They have secured over 25,000 homes of elderly and vulnerable people living in Wiltshire and Swindon and talked to over a 1,200 community groups. The Trust’s original aim was to secure the homes of elderly and disabled people who had become, or were at risk of becoming, victims of house crime. They offered practical help and advice on how to remain safe at home by undertaking a full home security assessment before fitting appropriate security hardware. Since then the Trust has increased its remit to meet the changing needs of our community; where appropriate they conduct a full fire risk assessment as well – installing smoke detectors and CO monitors where necessary and secure the homes of people experiencing domestic abuse. But it is probably their latest initiative, Stay Safe Online that meets the current challenges of modern day life. Cyber-crime is the Nation’s fastest growing crime – with around one third of fraud occurring online. The Trust now has a team of 7 volunteers who carry out home visits, improving awareness through education and therefore helping to prevent computer enabled fraud.

If you meet the criteria and would like a home visit or group talk please call:

The Trust has a dedicated and superbly efficient team that deserves praise and recognition for the vital service they provide. It is responsive, dynamic and versatile. It continues to work very closely with the Police to make Wiltshire a safer place to live. The Charity does not work in isolation but cooperates efficiently with a wide variety of other organisations, such as Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Victim Support, Swindon Women’s Aid, and many others. In addition to securing reductions in the number of domestic burglaries, additional benefits have included the reduced fear of crime and social withdrawal generated by the burglary, restoring the confidence of victims and their increased participation in the day-to-day activities of our communities. This amazing service is free to all over 60s or 18+ with a registered disability, how lucky are we in Wiltshire and Swindon to have such a team keeping us safe.

On, or shortly before, the 30th November cheques were issued to Clare Bromell of Wiltshire Air Ambulance and to Amy Spencer of the Stroke Association to the values of £2,563 and £7,587 by both Ian and Baz. In addition, Ladies Past Captain, Hilary Marsh, was delighted to hand a cheque for £1,400 to Lynn Gaskin of Sarcoma UK (Leigh’s Fund). Hayley, on behalf of the Stoke Association, commented, “we are absolutely blown away by the incredible total that you have raised”. Clare of Wiltshire Air Ambulance thanked everyone at the presentation and commented that “the Air Ambulance was able to get anywhere in Wiltshire within eleven minutes”. Lynn Gaskin, who has set up a fund within Sarcoma UK (a small rare cancer charity) in memory of her son Leigh, said “We are honoured that Hilary has chosen to raise funds for Leigh’s fund. This is an incredible amount raised through the sport he loved and takes the total raised by family and friends to £38,400 in his memory. It will help to continue the help line set up and also much needed research for this little known aggressive cancer that affects young adults disproportionately.”

YOUTH Group

The Friends of Abberd Brook is a volunteer group making the Abberd Brook good for both wildlife and people by leading conservation tasks. River Clean Up is also a volunteer group cleaning up the river, one plastic bottle at a time.

Calne’s New Environmental Youth Group Wiltshire

Wildlife Trust’s Waste Education Team, funded

by Wiltshire Council, have joined up with the Friends

of Abberd Brook and River Clean Up to start up

two new green youth groups in Calne, both named River

Warriors.

8

River Warriors launched on 1 November and had a great response with many youngsters turning up to help plant hundreds of daffodil bulbs, litter pick and make hot chocolate smoothies. Everyone went home with a upcycled bird feeder and plant pot. The Calne Mayor, Glenis Ansell showed her support by kicking off the session with some litter picking and engaging with the children. Francis from the Friends of Abberd Brook said “River Warriors give young people a chance to get a sense of belonging to a group where they can get a buzz and improve their selfesteem when doing positive activities. It is a proven fact that improved mental health is apparent whilst working in the local environment and in touch with nature”. River Warriors will run monthly and encourage youngsters to take direct action, learn new skills and meet new people who

want to fill their time with something constructive and fun. The first Thursday of each month is aimed at teenagers and the third Thursday each month is for families/young children. Anyone attending either session without parental supervision must have a consent form signed Each session will run from 3.30pm-5pm. If you are interested in volunteering with activities and participants then please get in touch at riverwarriors. calne@gmail.com Follow what River Warriors are up to on their Facebook page River Warriors Calne.

Make the most of the Sales! We all love a bargain, and sales save us so much money, right? Yes...but you need to shop smart to take proper advantage of the discounts, and to avoid buying things you don’t need.

So here is our one-stop shopping guide to the January Sales.

Do Your Research !

Many retailers market their sales beforehand and some even let you fill your shopping cart before sales officially open. This means you can think and plan, and make sure that your purchases are relevant to your needs. Goodbye post-sales regrets!

Shop Your Wardrobe First

Take stock of what you already own. This is important when you’re sales shopping. It's easy to get caught up in the frenzy of snapping up a great deal only to find that you already own three almost identical items to the bargain you just bought. If you go sales shopping armed with the knowledge of what you have already got, then you are more likely to make wise buying choices, and just like that, you’re adding cool-headed calm to the sales-shopping mix!

Don't Forget Postage Costs

If you’re shopping online, extra costs like postage, customs and shipping aren’t usually included in discounts. Factor this in and keep checking your cart before you hit the ‘Pay’ button.

Force Yourself to Try Things On

If it’s worth queueing for the changing room, and you still love it when it’s on, it’s probably a good find!

Set a Budget !

If you don't start with a limit you’re almost guaranteed to blow your budget. Because...new clothes! Also treat your budget as a limit not a target!

Beware of Returns Policies

Most retailers won’t let you return sale items just because you don't like them once you get them home but... Know your rights - If a sale item is faulty then your rights as a consumer are exactly the same as if the item was full price.

DO YOUA NEED

X O T DE

If there is someone in your life who drains your emotional energy, then that person is likely to be toxic. Fortunately, our seven-step plan will free you from social toxicity in 2019! Toxic people are manipulative and selfish. They are impossible to work with. They rarely apologise for or own their mistakes. If you dread spending time with a person, they are probably toxic and it's time to move on. If it's a colleague or a boss start looking for another job.

The person might be part of your social circle, or your immediate superior, or they might recognise that you are distancing yourself and try to claw back the friendship. You need to be clear in your own mind and create a mental separation, even if you can’t create a physical one right now.

Not to everyone, just to toxic people. Toxic people take advantage of kind people. They thrive by draining your good energy. There is no need to be nasty, simply stop being overly accommodating.

22

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

By Louise Addison

Don’t respond to texts, block their number if you can. If it's a work colleague, only respond to work-related matters and keep the relationship strictly professional. Social media is trickier. Blocking or unfriending can make life awkward if you share mutual friends or work together. I would suggest you unfollow rather than unfriend, and don't interact with them. The algorithms of most social media sites tend to flag up people you interact with regularly, so by not commenting or responding to them they will gradually disappear from your online world. Stick to your boundaries because toxic people exploit weakness.

Toxic family members are particularly difficult to deal with as a clean break is often impossible. But you can still establish clear boundaries, even if they are in your head. Limit interactions, perhaps only phone a toxic parent once a month for 20 minutes, or restrict visits to three times per year, whatever works for you. The point is, take control, visualise your boundaries clearly then stick to them.

MALMESBURY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS GIVES £35,000 TO GWH INCUBATOR APPEAL

Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) has donated £35,000 towards the Brighter Futures Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) Appeal to purchase five new incubators at Great Western Hospital in Swindon. The Appeal aims to raise £175,000 to purchase five state-of-the-art Drager Babyleo neonatal incubators.

These new incubators, which will replace the existing 15-year old machines, will respond to the changing and complex demands of these tiny patients from delivery to discharge, creating a seamless healing micro-environment for them. Each incubator costs £35,000 and, at its recent meeting, MLOF decided, in effect, to purchase one machine. MLOF was the recent beneficiary of a substantial legacy from a former Malmesbury resident, which has enabled it to make the donation, the largest single sum it has made. MLOF Chairman David Hide said:” We were delighted to support this very important Appeal. The new incubators will be a great benefit to those living in or near Malmesbury, for whom GWH is their main hospital.” Catherine Newman, Head of Brighter Futures, said: “ We are extremely grateful to MLOF for this very generous donation, which will take us very close to our target, which we are confident we will reach by Christmas.”

ers c n a d t e e r t S l a c Lo ! n io t i t e p m o C in W Local dance school Xpression StreetDance have an extra spring in their step after gaining third position in their first ever street dance competition, BDO Street Dance Championships, which took place in Chippenham at the Olympiad Leisure Centre on Sunday 2nd December. BDO was established in 2011 and is now one of the UK’s biggest competitive street dance platforms, with hundreds of dancers travelling across the country to take part in their popular competitions. The 8 members of Xpression StreetDance’s crew Baseline Beasts entered into the Under 14s category, performing a 2 minute piece of choreography incorporating a mixture of authentic styles including Hip Hop, Breaking, House and Waacking. Xpression StreetDance’s owner Diane Prior said “Baseline Beasts gave it all

their energy and commitment and absolutely smashed it! Coming third place in their first ever competition was a massive achievement for them and their little faces lit up when they heard the results.” This success follows a busy season for Xpression StreetDance after two sell out performances in November at The Neeld in Chippenham and appearances at Christmas Light Switch On events in Chippenham, Calne and Corsham. Diane continued “I’m so proud of these children who have dedicated a lot of their time and energy into being the best that they can be. I’m looking forward to the future and seeing what Xpression StreetDance has to bring at similar events in the future.” Xpression StreetDance is a genuine authentic street dance company for adults and children from Year 2 upwards based in Chippenham, Corsham, Calne and Devizes. The company teaches street styles such as Hip Hop, Breaking, Locking, Popping and House and strongly believes that, with the right teaching methods, anyone can learn to dance.

Volunteer for Home –

Start Kennet & help Local Families Parenting can be tough! Add challenges like: isolation, family breakdown, postnatal depression and multiple birth and can prove overwhelming. Home – Start Kennet provides emotional and practical support to families with children under five. Central to Home-Start’s service is their volunteers who visit families in their own home, once a week. Last year, the charity helped 107 families in Wiltshire including 216 children.

Home Start Kennet’s next Volunteer Training Course starts February 2019 in the Chippenham & Calne area. To find out more about Volunteering call: 01672 569457 Email: hskadmin@homestartkennet.co.uk or visit www.homestartkennet.co.uk

Support varies from accompanying a parent to a toddler group whilst they build their confidence to just being a listening ear over a cuppa! Our aim is to increase confidence, wellbeing and the ability to cope – helping prevent family stress becoming a family crisis. For families facing tough times, Home – Start support can be invaluable. One parent who received Home – Start support said, “I felt the service was my lifeline in a time of great need.” For volunteers the role can be hugely rewarding. Volunteer, Jodie, says: “I joined Home Start because I want to help others in my community. As a mum of twins, I’d experienced some of the extra challenges

parenting brings and felt I had something to

offer. Giving time and listening is all I really do but it can make such a difference to how someone is feeling – which makes it so rewarding”

HSK is committed to equality, diversity and safe recruitment practice. All volunteers are subject to an enhanced DSB check. Registered Charity no. 1106736

By Tom Hancock

It's hard not to feel a little deflated after all the festive fun. T here are ways to beat the January blues

Exercise! I can hear your groans but one of the best ways to fight the blues and improve wellbeing is exercise. January is a great time to join a gym...motivation for change is high and there are lots of introductory deals and taster sessions on offer. But if the gym doesn't appeal then try walking. A brisk walk in the open air is guaranteed to get your endorphins racing!

Eat well! I know we've all eaten rather too well over Christmas but now is the time to sort out your diet. In a post-festive slump, we are far more likely to continue the cycle of eating junk food for a quick high – only to spiral downwards into feelings of guilt and self-loathing as the sugar rush subsides. Stock up on fruit and veg, lean meat, nuts and grains, and watch your energy levels rise.

Sleep more! Most of us don't sleep enough over Christmas, and sleep-deprivation is known to contribute to feeling blue. Over the Christmas period our sleep patterns tend to be more irregular, due to late nights, sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings at relatives' houses, and the consumption of more than usual quantities of alcohol. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, and ensure you get at least eight hours sleep for a couple of weeks. See how much your mood and performance increases.

A Weight off your Mind? by Helen Adams, of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic Christmas festivities are here and gone in a flash, yet they can leave those unwanted ‘presents’ for you to enjoy throughout the coming year. You think you know the causes (a few too many drinks and those too-tempting mince pies to name a few), and you felt it would be rude to say “no” when friends and family are just being hospitable – and you want to join in too! Then there are the sugar-holics (I’ll confess to that one!) when, after your meal, you just feel the need to finish it off with something sweet. Or perhaps your chocolate/sweetie/biscuit stash has a special place in your home, hidden away so that only you know where it is. Perhaps when it’s not been the best day, food is your comfort and pick-me-up, and when you’ve had a good day, you have a treat to celebrate.

Here are my five top tips for the New Year period:

1 2

The way that our bodies gain weight is complex – there are lots of factors, but that doesn’t mean you are powerless to stop the inevitable.

3

Crash diets are not the way to go. They can result in nutritional deficiencies that make you feel worse, and they don’t help you understand how to make food healthy, nutritious, satisfying, and tasty. Do things differently this time around. Work with a qualified nutritional therapist, either in a group or on a one-to-one basis

4

Helen will be running her successful weight management programme: ‘A weight off my mind” in early 2019 in Bath. See website for details www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk

5

Reduce your sweet tooth: It takes ten days to grow a brand-new set of tastebuds, so if you can reduce your sugar intake and maintain it for ten days, your tastebuds recognise a whole new level of (less) sweetness that’s just right for you Banish the Biscuit Tin – and the biscuits: Banish both AND avoid the biscuit aisle in the supermarket. You have no reason to walk that way unless you intend to buy biscuits. Avoid the Siren call of: “I just buy them for the children” – children don’t need them either Form New Habits: We really are creatures of habit. It’s habit to have something for dessert, so break the habit by doing something else. It doesn’t even have to be exciting, just different. Go clear the kitchen, tidy up, go for a walk, play a board game with the family. Moderate alcohol: Alcohol consumption, in general, is declining, and many more are tee-total. Start your evening with a glass of plain water and a slice of lemon (fizzy if you prefer). No one else need know there’s no gin in it! Alternate your drinks as the evening goes on. You will be halving your consumption without trying too hard Get a Red Plate: There is scientific research to show that eating from a red plate makes you want to eat less. If you can make it a slightly smaller plate as well, that also helps to reduce your portion sizes.

Ebikes are a great equalizer! No longer does a stronger rider have to wait for their partner at the top of a hill, when with the press of a button you can change the assistance level as you pedal, which increases power from the motor that literally whooshes you along. You’ll be able to cycle further and faster, enjoy hours of happy cycling no matter your fitness levels. An ebike transforms everyone into being a stronger cyclist. So be it a 5 miles commute to work or a 30 miles leisurely ride in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, it becomes effortless. They encourage you out of the car, you can forget about hills and enjoy a new found freedom! What’s not to like… The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

60 40

being inin your IsIsbeing your s the new 60s the news 40s? We’ve spoken to some Wiltshire residents to get their take on reaching ‘retirement age’

IT seems the days are gone when 40 was considered past it and 60 meant time to retire with just enough mileage left in the tank for a spot of gardening. According to the Office of National Statistics, we are living almost ten years longer than we did in 1980 – so it’s hardly surprising that rather than slowing down, people in their 60s are actually gearing up for a new era in their lives.

“I think disgraceful is the way to do it. Be a nuisance, stay alive.” Sir Billy Connolly (when asked about growing older.)

Susan Walklate, of Gable End Farm, is surprised to be 60 – she says she’s never felt her age. She and her son, Simon, look after their small farm, which is largely free range, where she has bred pygmy goats, angora goats and micro pigs, among others. She is also busy creating a property portfolio with a house in south west France and another in Swindon, while starting up an Airbnb barn at her farm, plus planning a glamping site. She hopes this will create an income which will allow her to spend more time in France. Susan said: “I plan to be fitter, more vibrant and younger when I reach 70 than I am now.”

Graham and Linda Clarke are a couple with a young view on life. They returned to live in Wiltshire 15 months ago, having spent 30-odd years in South Africa. Linda, 66, runs her own counselling business, as well as a free infertility group at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. She said her 40s were taken up with being a busy mum to her three children – whereas now she can focus on herself and enjoy her family without that same pressure. “In my 40s, I really didn’t have much time for me – everybody else had to come first. Now, I have balance because the children have flown the nest and I have time to build my business and take time to go out in the fresh air and walk. I’ve got time to devote to the community as well, through voluntary work and the Rotary club. “I think to stay young you need never to stop learning – keep your brain active, embrace change and be curious all the time.” Linda was in private practice in South Africa for 13 years and had to start from scratch on returning to the UK – so she’s had no choice than to embrace change. “My huge shift from my 40s to my 60s has been my attitude to the ups and downs of life. I’m in a far, far better place now.” Her husband, Graham, runs Clarke Knives, and says at approaching 70, it’s a struggle not to work seven days a week. He began making knives after his business in South Africa collapsed during the 2008 crash. He said: “I feel very much as I did in my 40s, and not much different than I did in my 20s. I love the excitement of a challenge – not having one would be quite depressing. So long as you’ve got something to do and you’re learning to do something new and being inquisitive, you’ll be fine. People ask me how I feel now I’m going to be 70 in a few months, and I don’t feel any different from when I was 20 – I might not drink quite as much, that’s all. It’s about keeping the balance and I’m happier now than I’ve ever been.”

Three top tips for ensuring 60 is the new 40 from Wiltshire’s leading nutritional therapist Helen Adams

Good digestion

This is absolutely key. Inside our bodies, everything is about chemistry. Our stomachs break down our food and make the nutrients easy to get at, so it’s vital to have enough stomach acid. To improve stomach acid, take some apple cider vinegar ‘with the mother’ (the cloudy stuff ) in water first thing in the morning and before dinner. Never drink it neat, as the concentrated acid will damage your tooth enamel.

Good energy

Making energy is a complex business. Sleep and exercise are massively important here as is the right nutrition. Make sure your food includes lots of leafy green vegetables to give you B vitamins, iron from red meat (carnivore) or unsulphured dried apricots (vegetarian), along with a good source of vitamin C. The best source here is acerola cherry, which you can buy as a supplement or a drink. It’s also good for sleep. Magnesium is very important too – found in high quantity in spinach, Swiss chard, squash, pumpkin seeds, broccoli and cucumber.

Freedom from pain

By the time we reach our 60s, a lifetime’s nutrient deficits begin to show! A food intolerance test can show whether you have a nightshade sensitivity (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, chilli, aubergines). Eat more oily fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies) to increase your anti-inflammatory response with omega-3. Apples and onions contain quercetin, which is an anti-histamine – this also reduces inflammation. Milk is very inflammatory and mucusforming, so reduce this.

At 66, photographer Lis McDermott, who lives in Royal Wootton Bassett, has just published a book Mixed Feelings about her life with her younger husband, Conrad, who is of Jamaican heritage. “I feel the most relaxed I’ve ever felt, and also the most confident,” she said. “Although I’m older, I feel much more confident in front of the camera too, being photographed. I look the way I look and don’t want to spend my time trying to change my look to physically look younger - it’s all about smiling and your energy.”

Recently 60, Rachel Terry, who runs the Citadel Hall in Chippenham, is also in the youth of her business, with no intention of winding down. She said: “I feel better at 60 than I have for years. I’m doing a job I absolutely love and have just hit my sixth business birthday. And I’m very proud that at this age, I’m building a business and it’s going strong.” As a lab technician in a secondary school 20 years ago, Rachel was diagnosed with ME and fibromyalgia and found the conventional workplace simply wasn’t flexible enough for her needs. So she designed her own working life - and one of her biggest joys is the belly dancing group she runs, called Sahara Sisters. After trying the gym, swimming and other forms of exercise, she found belly dancing was something that could suit all capabilities and all ages. Fifteen years on, it is one of the largest groups in the area, with an age group spanning 18 to 80. “I can adapt the moves to deal with your needs. I’ve got one lady who’s on two crutches – and since she’s been coming she can stand up, near a chair in case she needs it, and do some of the moves. It makes you feel better about yourself – where else can you get dressed up in sequins and sparkles and really enjoy yourself?”

Lis, who was 40 when she met her then 28-year-old husband, said: “We wrote Mixed Feelings because of our differences - 12 years in age, different social backgrounds - and of course the ethnic difference. We do still get stares, in 2019!” Lis says her top tips for staying young are to laugh every day; accept that you can always learn, even from people younger than you; don’t keep looking to the past as though it was better - it wasn’t always better; live in the now.

WIN A SIGNED COPY OF "MIXED FEELINGS" Lis McDermott has kindly donated one signed copy of her book Mixed Feelings which you could win by sending your name and a contact telephone number by email to: production@towncriermagazine.com by 31st January 2019. The Editor’s decision is final.

new resolutions

Most resolutions fail because they are too vague. Make your 2019 resoultions SMART.

Specific - Rather than, 'I

will lose weight,’ say, 'I will lose 7lbs by the end of January by cutting out deserts, and walking a mile a day.'

Measurable - What does

your success look like? Is it a 15lb weight-loss by the end of March? Is it fitting into a size 12 dresss? An effective goal is easy to visualise.

Attainable - By all means be ambitious; aiming to save £2500 during 2019 for your dream holiday in 2020 is fine, but make sure you can break down the goal into attainable steps which can be achieved in a shorter time frame. Can you save £200 per month from your current income? If not can you pick up some bar work or sell some possessions on eBay. Maybe you could save £100 per month over two years and take your dream holiday in 2021. Now your target is attainable.

Realistic - If your goal is to win X Factor but you couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket it's time for a reality check. If you are 100lbs over your ideal weight, you are never going to be a size ten for your beach holiday in July. But realistic doesn't just mean 'able to atttain', it means 'willing to attain.' If you want to retrain as a nurse, will you put in

the hours of study and take a pay cut while you're doing that?

Time-limited - Set a goal. Research shows that three months is good as it's short enough to see the end-point, and long enough for significant change. Whether it’s passing your driving test, or shedding a stone or two before your wedding day; three months is a good time-frame. . . . s y p e P e k i l y Diar Even in a digital age diaries are surprisingly popular Christmas gifts. Perhaps you found yourself sitting pen-poised on January 1st.

On January 1st, 1660 Samuel Pepys was in the same position. That was the day he began his diary. He could have had no idea what an important document it would become. It is one of the most important documents for historians studying the English Restoration period, which coincidentally also began in 1660. Pepys’ diaries are special because for just under a decade he recorded the minutiae of his everyday life. It helped that he was quite well-connected. His cousin, Edward Montagu, was a high-ranking naval officer who found a position for Pepys at the Navy Office in the City of London. His hard work and talent saw Pepys promoted through the ranks very quickly.

His cousin's position also meant that Pepys was present at many important events, all of which he recorded in his meticulous shorthand. Pepys recorded everything. He gave vivid accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. It is from him that we are able to relive the theatre of the period, as well as fashion and popular food and drink. We are in turbulent times right now, and who knows‌the historians of the future might be reading your entries on the aftermath of Brexit! By Lesley Wade The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

OPPORTUNITIES

Learn a Language

new

Want to learn a new language in 2019? It’s not as hard as you think! I learned Spanish alongside my son to encourage him while he was studying for his GCSE. It started as a joke, but I quickly became hooked. Here’s what I learned about language learning.

New words? You may not need to learn as many as you think! In English just 300 words make up 65% of all written material! We use some words a lot, and luckily that’s the case in every other language too. You can buy or make decks of flash cards of these words. There is even a flash card app called Anki which presents words at precisely the right intervals to maximise memorisation.

Free Resources I have passable Spanish thanks to the Duo Lingo app. The BBC has introductory courses to around 40 different languages. Omniglot.com is a great opensource resource to all manner of languages, and I found fluentu.com brilliant for Spanish.

Cognates These are words

which are spelled almost the same in English and which have the same meaning. In French, lots of 'ion' words are spelled the same even though they are pronounced differently: action, nation, communication etc. In Spanish the same words end in 'ción' and in Italian 'zione'. Simple right? There are also words such as hélicoptère (French) or aeropuerto (Spanish) which are similar enough to the English word that you will recognise them immediately. You can google 'Cognates' for the language you are learning.

Interaction You need to hear and speak the language consistently. Look up Radio stations, YouTube channels, news websites, and blogs in the language you want to learn. Advertise for someone to practice conversation with. Ask friends on Facebook or in the school playground whether they know a native speaker who would converse with you for half an hour in exchange for coffee and cake! There are groups dedicated 54

to language exchange on Facebook too. By forcing yourself to converse you will improve very quickly.

The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

Embrace mistakes We learn by making mistakes. As children we speak, we’re corrected, and we adapt. Even at aged fifty I still come across new English words and phrases. You can’t ever completely learn a language. Just use everything you know with the emphasis on communication rather than perfection. Native speakers will not be offended by your slips...they will most likely be charmed and fall over themselves to help correct you. Use SMART goals

SMART means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timed. A good example is, ‘By the end of January I will be able to hold a simple conversation with a waiter, book a table, order food, and ask for the bill. Or you might aim to complete three lessons per day on Duo Lingo for the whole of a month. You might even set yourself the task of passing an online test, a GCSE. The point is, you have a time frame, and the achievements you make are measurable, so you can see how far you've come.

TRAVEL GUIDE

Bali Hai is calling ! by Carol Price Pebbles Travel

MY first visit to the cinema as a child was to see the original film “South Pacific”! I can still remember racing home to get out the atlas to see where these amazing islands were! The memory of this magical place has stayed with me these past 60 years. So pull up a chair my friends, this is at last my real life version of South Pacific !! A journey to the other side of the world the South Pacific is made up of many islands. The original film was centred around Bora Bora and Moorea part of the Society Islands in French Polynesia and this is where we are heading. Situated 9,275 miles from the UK the Society Islands are an Achipelego covering as area of over 1590 kms. Our journey choice was to fly via Los Angeles where we broke our journey for 2 nights in Santa Monica. Our Hotel was just along the beach from the world famous Santa Monica Pier. We had time enough to help adjust the body clock and see the sights of Hollywood, Beverley Hills, and Disney using the hop on and hop buses that were easy to use and perfect for such a short stop.

Tahiti was not our stop for long as we were waiting to board the small flight across to Mo’orea . Small in plane size 20 seats and small in journey time all of 10 mins ! The flight was spectacular and a wonderful introduction to the island. As we approached we could see the mountains of jagged extinct volcanoes and my memory returned to the film and “Bali Hai “ the sacred mountain ... Yes ! I am here at last !! Mo’orea one of the most scenically striking islands in French Polynesia is going to be our home for the next 6 nights. We will have time to get over our long journey, soak up some sun and explore the island. We chose to stay on the East coast of the island, which has the best beach, sunrise and views back towards Tahiti. The water was so clear you hardly needed to snorkel! The fish including some Rays came in so close they were so easy to spot. The view across to the water bungalows from the beach of pure white sand to the greens, blues and

We chose to fly overnight to Tahiti the biggest island and the capital of French Polynesia. We arrived early morning to a traditional Tahitian garland of flowers placed around our necks ... Yes! it was already bringing back that cinema afternoon ! 58

deeper blues of the water reaching out to the Coral reef were stunning. Looking behind me was “my” Mountain waiting to be explored. Day six came all too quickly, but with photos taken and memories secured the adventure my friends is about to take on another chapter. With my dream of seeing more we are heading back to Tahiti to join a small ship cruise which sails around the Society Islands. Wind Spirit is a small 5 sail yacht with a maximum of 120 passengers, reaching into Bays and Ports that larger ships could never reach. The journey will take 7 nights starting and ending in Tahiti. Islands that I have kept locked away for all those years are at last coming to life! We were greeted on board by the Captain and crew and it appeared very quickly that we were the only “Brits” onboard, which seemed to give us celebrity status over the coming days ! Our fellow passengers mostly American Canadian and Australians could not believe we had travelled so far! The ship sailed as the sun was setting and we could see our first port of call in the distance Mo’orea, yes back to my magical island but I didn’t mind as I can see “my” mountain again. As the ship leaves port we have what they call a “sail away”. Music, Conquest of Paradise is played as the sails are unfolded and we slip out of port. With a glass of something that is

the water is amazing, when the sun shines the water is so clear it radiates all the hues through green to serval shades of blues to the dark blue of the ocean beyond the coral reefs.

sparkly in one hand I wipe the tears of pleasure from my eyes whilst trying to capture the moment on camera. We have arrived to Mo’orea in the dark so to see the view in the morning was breathtaking. We were anchored on the other side of the island to where we had been staying and to see the island from the sea and a different side of “my” mountain the camera and tears were in full use again!.

My thoughts go back to my film, that beach, that make shift bar and restaurant and yes my friends I made it and found that bar ... Slightly smartened up and now a must, whether you have seen the film or not!! “Bloody Mary’s “ is the one for me ! Box ticked!

Every port you visit passengers can either disembark for sightseeing independently or take one of the organised tours provided by the ship. Stay onboard and enjoy the watersports on offer. Divers and snorklers head off in all directions. I decided to stay on board and just soak up the view.

This is our last night on board as the ships sets sail back to Tahiti. It is a perfect sunset, all five sails are up, music is playing, no dry eyes even though we all know the routine!! (the music gets you every time) We have had a wonderful trip met new friends, taken more photos than I am sure I need! I would so recommend this trip for that special holiday or for those looking for something different. It will certainly not disappoint ... even if you have never watched “South Pacific“!!

The evening came around quickly, the view secured in my camera and mind. The ship is about to sail, positions secured drink in hand the music starts .... Yes not a dry eye as I look around. We head out to open water, navigating the small opening in the coral reef. Looking up at the sails it takes your mind back to the brave seafarers of hundreds of years past who took to small boats and even canoes to find these remote islands.

The shop docks back in Tahiti and with one last look at my far away paradise we board the flight back to Los Angeles. We are going to have two more nights for a rest and reflect on our travels, and maybe I should edit my photos!!

Our journey takes is on the longest stretch of open water and for us “non” sailors a little bumpy at times. We all survived the night and all were present and excited about our next stop in the morning. Every island was different from extinct volcanoes, rain forests coral gardens and small sand islands called Motu’s . Even the larger islands like Huahine or Raiatea are so sparsely populated with small towns and villages just along the waterfront.

The flight home is overnight so as usual I look through the inflight entertainment film library old favourites selection and it was there!! What did I choose? It has to be … SOUTH PACIFIC!

Trust Your Local Independent Travel Agent to find your perfect holiday

We learnt so many interesting facts of how even today these islands so far from anywhere, live on a daily basis.

The mystic of Bora Bora which we could see in the distance was still calling me, my circle was almost complete !

The ship was either anchored in deserted Bays and we were taken by boat ashore or to a remote island for a BBQ with beach time and snorkelling . Often it was moored in Port , each day and island was different.

We spent two nights moored alongside in Bora Bora and the island did not disappoint. The main island with its famous extinct volcano square shaped mountain is surrounded by many smaller coral islands called Motu’s. The colour of

31st December is when Karen knew something had to change. Attending a black tie gala evening for NYE, lacking confidence and unhappy with the way she looked, she made the decision that next year things would be different. Karen joined Slimming World with Georgie on Monday 2nd January 2017. She couldn’t believe how much she could eat and still lose weight! Karen rediscovered her love of cycling and went on to lose almost 6 stone picking up her target award Boxing Day 2017 just in time for that same gala evening one year later. Why not see what you could achieve in a year?

If you didn’t get what you wanted for Christmas now is the perfect time to curl up in front of the fire with a gardening book you’ve brought for yourself. We have a few to recommend....

One Magic Squareby Lolo Hubein Following on from the previous book, have you ever wanted to have a go at growing your own vegetables and fruit but feel completely clueless? We’re always hearing that the best and cheapest food is the food you grow in your own garden, but it all seems rather complicated to a total novice. In One Magic Square, Lolo Hubein shows how you can start your own productive food garden in ten minutes a day on a single square metre. She provides simple plot designs starting with salads, and gradually expanding to include beans, tomatoes, corn, roots and much more. She also stresses the benefits of companion planting and provides ideas. The bite-sized designs (pun totally intended!) allow you to extend by one square metre each season, or to pick your favourites.

RSPB Gardening for Wildlife by Adrian Thomas If you long to have butterflies and bees in your flowerbeds, birds singing in your trees, and hedgehogs bustling about under your bushes then look no further than this wonderful guide to wildlife gardening. Adrian Thomas explains the intricacies of attracting wildlife to your garden whether you have a small plot or more than an acre. His style is accessible, but rich in detail. He draws on the latest wildlife research to explain the ecological principles. There are practical projects to help you create entire habitats, and it’s packed to brim with helpful photographs. If you love wildlife this inspirational book will help you.

RHS Great British Village Show by Matthew Biggs and Thane Prince The village show is a quintessential British tradition, and for many gardeners it represents the pinnacle of their sowing and growing year. This charming and informative book takes you behind the scenes of this very British institution, offering insights into the worlds of judges and contestants. It’s beautifully illustrated with photographs, and offers wonderful gems of insider information, including how to stage your produce, and what the judges are really looking for. There are even recipes for prize-worthy jams and preserves. If you’ve never attended a village show this book will make you yearn for a summer of tents and teas; you might even be tempted to become a competitor.

Baydons Meadow volunteers appeal for help Hardworking volunteers are hoping to recruit more helping hands to safeguard a popular wildlife haven in Chippenham. The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group maintains and protects the field beside the River Avon, just a short walk from the town centre. At their recent AGM, the group reported on the wide range of activities held throughout the last year. Volunteers took part in more than 20 different sessions including hedge-laying, hay-raking, coppicing, watermonitoring, mowing and weeding, as well as hosting visits. They also planted almost 600 plants and bulbs including bluebells and wild daffodils. However, the group is keen to attract more volunteers to their monthly workparties.

There are around 20 other volunteers aged from their 20s to their 70s, with a wide variety of backgrounds. Derek said:

"We’ve made many new friends since joining the group, as well as learning so much more about conservation and wildlife. t’s a great way to meet new people and learn new skills while also enjoying plenty of fresh air and exercise."

BMWG chairman Derek Walter said:

“We had another very successful year with lots of achievements, including being shortlisted in the conservation category of the prestigious Wiltshire Life Awards and installing an eye-catching new information board funded by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity. We were also able to carry out a great deal of clearing and planting across the meadow, despite the hot and dry summer. However, we know that we could achieve so much more if we had just a few extra volunteers to help us each month.” Derek, a 36-year-old environmental manager, joined the group alongside his wife Louise, a 34-year-old teacher, in 2014 shortly after moving to the area.

The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group normally meets on the first Sunday morning of every month Visit www.baydonsmeadow.org.uk Picture: Derek and Louise Walter, olunteers with the Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

The new 508 certainly looks the part, with a classy, grown-up design that fulfils the brief of competing with its German rivals. That’s not to say it doesn’t offer some French flair. At the front, there’s a striking set of vertical LED daytime running lights, sharp grille & slim headlamps. The 508 looks more compact than many of its gargantuan competitors, with creases in all the right places. It’s shorter than the previous 508, but Peugeot assures it’s more practical, while a practical 508 SW also joins the new line-up. Around the back, Peugeot’s latest ‘claw-effect’ rear lights are found sitting in a black bar that runs the width of the car. Things get more interesting inside the 508. Like the 3008 & 5008, there’s been a strong focus on designing a modern interior that wouldn’t look out of place in more expensive cars. Peugeot’s i-Cockpit set-up is found up front, but the 508 comes with a stepped dashboard and large touchscreen, while a high centre console surrounds the driver. Peugeot offers a selection of engines in the 508, ranging from 130hp to 225hp, with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. The Town Crier Magazine | JANUARY 2019

Expenses that aren’t tax deductible Clothing Unless it’s protective clothing, or a uniform, clothing is not tax deductible. Spectacles Eye tests are claimable for workers using PC’s, but the cost of glasses cannot be claimed for because they are generally not worn ‘wholly and exclusively’ for work. Safety glasses worn only at work could be an exception. Entertaining Entertaining potential/existing customers can be put through a business’s accounts – and reimbursed to a director/ employee. If a meal out is part entertaining and part subsistence for a director/employee, it is worth calculating the split between the two. Dividends We sometimes get asked, ‘if I pay more dividends how much tax will that save me?’ Unlike wages and salaries, dividends are not tax deductible against a Company’s profits. Removal costs Removal expenses (up to £8,000) paid for by an employer can be tax deductible, but only where the employee/ director is starting new work in a new area, or if the work place changes. Grocery bills A director/employee can claim for meals bought whilst at a temporary workplace, but food for work that is bought beforehand, cannot be claimed as it is not attributable to a work related journey. Hire car and mileage If you use a hire car in the business, you cannot also then claim the HMRC Approved mileage rates (of 45p and 25p) – because these rates are only intended to cover the wear and tear on personally owned vehicles. Walking in our Walking in Shoes our shoes

I

melda Marcos was first lady of the Philippines for more than 20 years. Her husband’s time in office is remembered for corruption and brutality, but Imelda is remembered for her shoes. When protesters stormed the presidential palace in 1986 they famously discovered 2,700 pairs of her shoes, which are now on display in the Shoe Museum in the northern city of Marikina. I like shoes too, although my collection is no way near 2,700. The other week a young girl brought the coffee and cheese scone I had ordered to my table and said, “We have chosen the biggest and cheesiest scone for you because we love your shoes”. The other day I heard of an art instillation that travelled the country during the summer. It was an interactive shoe shop housed in a giant shoe box. In 2016, the Health Foundation teamed up with the Empathy Museum to develop a collection of stories from people. ‘A Mile in My Shoes’ invited people to step into someone else's shoes and embark on a mile long, imaginative journey to see the world through their eyes. The visitors were given a pair of shoes and an audio device to enable them to literally walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and in doing so they explored our shared humanity. From a Syrian refugee to a sex worker, a war veteran to a neurosurgeon, visitors walked in the shoes of a stranger whilst listening to their story. The stories covered different aspects of life, from loss and grief to hope and love and took the visitor on an empathetic as well as a physical journey. Empathy is often summed up as ‘putting yourself in someone else’s shoes’. One woman who went for a walk in another’s shoes said of the experience: “Such a great idea

and so effective to steep your mind into someone else’s reality. ...it’s as though the person is talking into your ear, confiding… heart-breaking and inspiring.” All this reminds me of when humans had become blind and deaf to God, but God loved all that he had made so much that he sent his Son Jesus, so that he could ‘walk in our shoes’. He became human like us, sharing our joys and sadness so that we might know how much God loves us. We humans could literally look God in the face for the first time, and in doing so could understand him better. It is hard to believe sometimes, but he came to rescue us. In a world full of corruption, selfishness and fear there is tremendous comfort and hope in knowing that God cares about each one of us. As we start a new year it’s worth spending time reflecting on the fact that Jesus gave up everything to become one of us, to walk in our shoes, to delight in our joy and feel our pain. His birth brought great joy to the world; especially to the least of humanity. He was no ordinary baby, it was God in the flesh come to rescue us and restore our relationship with God. If you look ahead into 2019 and are faced with sadness and anxiety about the future, know that Jesus came for you to show you how much God loves you, even in the messiness of life. For others of us, perhaps we might learn to ‘walk in other’s shoes’ and experience the lives of those who find 2019 a daunting prospect. In trying on someone else’s life for size we can share something of the love of God who came amongst us in Jesus. God’s richest blessings for 2019.
