Dad of two wins award for his innovative app for childminders and parents A father of two from Wiltshire has won a major award for his childcare app Kids Covered
The app allows childminders to: •
auto invite parents to the app
Paul Harding (42) who lives with his wife Samantha and their two children in Lechlade, became frustrated with the amount of paperwork required to book their children into childcare.
•
set up booking periods that can be funded, mandatory and with sibling discounts.
•
take bookings for day care, breakfast or after school clubs.
“I watched my wife filling out pdf forms just to book childcare and became aware of the amount of paperwork childminders have to fill in just to function in their day to day lives – as well as parents. It felt to me like there had to be a better, more efficient yet safe solution.”
•
keep registers of attendance within the app.
•
provide information on EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage)
•
view safeguarding, daily diary, likes and dislikes, dietary needs in the app.
Paul, who is a software consultant and coding expert, spent months researching his app - Kids Covered. Recently it was declared the Most Innovative Tech Solution in the Wiltshire Techies Awards 2019. “It’s a one stop shop for childminding businesses. Each childminder creates a secure profile and invites parents of the children they are caring for to link to it – for safeguarding reasons this is the best way to approach this. Once linked, parents can book their time with their own registered childminder and flowing from that parents can see live updates on their phones.”
Parents once they’ve downloaded the app can: •
book their children into childcare and view their history.
•
pay with vouchers or a credit card
•
complete and update safeguarding, likes and dislikes and dietary information.
•
see EYFS live alerts.
•
get daily diary live alerts in app.
Paul’s app generates income from taking £1.20 from each booking made with no hidden other fees and no monthly fee.

Boules to Pétanque New Year New Name! The Upper Thames Boules Club moved to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in 2018 and this year we have changed our name after obtaining permission from the Cabinet Office to the Royal Wootton Bassett Pétanque Club. A new club strip is being arranged and will have our new logo. Our membership has grown through the year since our move to Royal Wootton Bassett but we have plenty of space to accommodate new members so please come along and have a go at one of our club sessions on Tuesday evening 7 to 9 pm or Friday mornings from 10 to 12 am. We have a short social after each club session. All abilities are welcome and we provide all equipment to get you started so if you don’t like it there is no cost. We have a range of abilities among our members, from social play to those who play at regional and national level. Last year we won the Cotswold Pétanque League and this year we have entered 2 teams in the competition so we are hoping for 1st and 2nd. We are members of the Great Western Region and host a number of regional events in addition to our own club competitions. This year we have a doubles ladder and melee planned so far with other events to come. There are planned visits by individual youth organisations during May and June. To facilitate this we have very kindly been awarded part funding by the town council to purchase boules for use by the towns youths.
WESSEX MID SUMMER
VINTAGE SHOW
2019, will see the eleventh year that the Wessex Midsummer Vintage Show has been staged at the village of Semington on 15th & 16th June attracting around three hundred plus vintage exhibits. The main aim of this event is to raise funds for the Children's Hospice South West. The exhibits cover all types of vintage vehicles, tractors, commercial, military vehicles, cares & motorcycles along with steam powered exhibits. Our model boat pond is a must for the children as they can try sailing a radio controlled model, and each day we will be giving away free sweets to our young visitors. Also, why not come along and hold a bird of prey and take your own photographs. The Craft marque has a selection of jewellery and the trade section will have all manner of 'wares' from old tools right through to footwear. Full facilities are on site, a variety of food outlets, a beer tent, live music and a hog roast to tempt you. Some lucky dads may go home with a surprise gift what with the event being held over Father's Day!
With lots to do and see, we look forward to seeing you there!

Haven Timber, just off the A36 sits tucked away on Farleigh Rd in Norton St Philip. At first glance the building is unassuming yet impressive. It is immediately apparent why their customer base is increasing year on year in epic proportions, particularly amongst trade people. Carrying a gargantuan stock of timber and fencing products, along with competitive pricing and unrivalled quality, Haven Timber has become one of the most successful timber yards in the South West. Step around to the rear of the busy shop and workshop ... a garden furniture and building wonderland awaits. Quite possibly one of the largest show sites in the South West, Haven Timber have the ultimate display of sheds, summerhouses and garden furniture. The knowledgeable and helpful staff are on hand when you need them and have a ‘no hard sell’ policy, allowing customers to browse uninterrupted.
RF
Haven Timber’s innovative BaseFeat system offers a cost effective alternative to the expensive groundworks typically required to provide a level base for a garden building. After hearing stories of people paying more for groundworks than the building that would sit upon it, the BaseFeat concept was the brainchild of Matthew Bryant, Haven Timber’s Managing Director.
TU
Haven Timber is just off the A36 on Farleigh Rd, Norton St Philip conveniently located between Farleigh Road Farm Shop and The George Inn (one of the oldest pubs in England serving fantastic food and fantastic beer).

BEST BBQ's of the
Best Places for a BBQ in Wiltshire
With warmer weather on the way, the smell of sizzling sausages is just around the corner as people across Wiltshire prepare for their summer barbeques. Whether you’re planning a family day out, party for friends or a larger corporate event, these local places are great choices for your upcoming BBQ
Lydiard Park (Swindon) With the season running until October 31st, the spacious picnic area at Lydiard Park is a top place to hire a BBQ. Prices range from £25 to £60, with allday and half-day options for up to 40 people. Bookings must be made in advance.
Savernake Forest (Marlborough) With just ten BBQ spots in this picturesque forest, you’d do well to head there early as places can’t be reserved in advance. Check the Forestry England website for regulations regarding BBQs in the forest.
Kington St Michael (Chippenham) This little BBQ area in the playing field is provided mostly for the local community, but if you enjoy looking around quaint villages it could be worth the trip. With a population of around 700 people, this village also has a lovely church and traditional architecture if you’re looking for a quiet day out.
Coate Water Park (Swindon) A great choice for large family gathering or community groups wanting to hire an outdoor space for a BBQ. For use of the horse field and the large static BBQ, the cost is £52.50, or bring your own for £13.65. Options are also available for corporate groups of over 100 people. 18
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2019
Bibury Trout Farm (Cirencester) Just outside of Wiltshire, Bibury Trout Farm has BBQ spots for hire, perfect to combine with a trip to one of England’s oldest working trout farms, where you can even ‘catch your own’.
Cotswolds Water Park (Cirencester) Also just over the border, the Cotswolds Water Park and Beach has activities from swimming and playgrounds to volleyball and AquaVenture. BBQ hire from £25, and a range of bookable activities to choose from – a great choice for families with young children.
Summary While those of us with our own gardens like nothing better than inviting the neighbours over for a friendly gathering, these options are great for those without their own outside space or if your event is bigger than your back garden. Always remember to check local regulations before lighting a BBQ in a public place, and dispose of all rubbish correctly.

Ingredients Ingredients for 1 burger
HOMEmade MADE BURGERS Home burgers! Equipment: Large mixing bowl, small mixing bowl, non-stick frying pan. Method: Ensure the mince is at room temperature before you start as it will help to keep your burger tender. Put it into a large bowl and break it up with a fork. Add the salt and massage it in with your hands until the salt is well blended and the mixture is soft. Leave to stand for 25 minutes with a cover over the top. Mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl for the sauce and set aside.
Heat a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the burgers and cook for a minute on each side or until they are browned and cooked through. Cut the brioche bun in half and add one burger. Top with the sauce and the toppings of your choice, then place the final burger on the top before adding the remainder of the bun. You can serve this burger with sweet potato fries, salad or simply enjoy it just on its own.
Divide the mince mixture into two equal portions to create two thinner burgers of approximately 12cm in diameter. Use a small bowl or a saucer as a guide if you are keen to get a neat shape.

4. Chop the mint, and add along with the salt and pepper according to your tastes. (Note, this can be made in advance and kept overnight in the fridge – just add a little more olive oil and stir to make it look glossy again)

Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled. Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets. Delicious!

Food & Wellbeing
...and I don’t mean just healthy body. At this time when there’s so many questions asked about the explosion of mental health issues I can’t help but compare my experiences in different cultures. There is no one cause or a solution to mental health but we certainly can manage it with few simple changes to our daily routines Food: Time spent preparing dishes for family and friends is a known fact to be therapeutic, mainly because it touches on our primitive needs. Also, it is time when we are in control of what we are doing, so present at the moment. We chop, dice, squeeze & stir producing sounds and scents that tickle our senses. And at the end there is a sense of creation of something so beautiful that we consume and enjoy. Food is at the heart of every gathering. It opens the channels of communication between people gathered around it - be it family, friends or colleagues. Preparing food together and sharing it softens our inhibitions and helps us connect better. Sharing food enforces our sense
26
of belonging and we all need to belong. Then it is easy to manage our hopes, joy, worries and struggles because we are not alone. I invite you all to open your door and invite a family member, a friend, a neighbour or someone you know in your area or at a group you attend. Share with them biscuits, fruits or a salad and see what difference it makes to your day. I’m a great believer in honest food using fresh ingredients, local when possible, put together in a simple way to prepare tasty and healthy recipes to share and enjoy. The benefits of that are for the body and soul. It is unheard of to visit a Lebanese home and not be offered food, fruits or nuts. If you’d like to experience the Lebanese hospitality, which is always based around food, book my Lebanese Pop Up Restaurant Under The Sky on the 13th July at Owl Lodge, SN15 2PN, 7.30-10.30pm. You can book it on Eventbrite or send me an email.

SAFE SOUND
DON’T FORGET TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY WHILE YOU’RE AWAY
AND
The summer holidays are just around the corner. We put a lot of effort into planning our perfect summer break, but we often don’t put quite as much effort into making sure that while we’re away relaxing our home is safe. Most burglars are opportunists, who target empty homes. This means that the holiday season is bonanza time for them. However, a little preparation can
save a lot of distress. 60 percent of burglars gain entrance through rear or side windows and doors so make securing these a priority. Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier, rather than just being attractive borders. The Metropolitan Police recommend ‘hostile plants’; plants that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Don’t let them grow too high though, your home should be visible from the street and to your neighbours. The idea is not to provide a hiding place for intruders! Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to put them off entering.
By Sarah Davey
Motion-activated lighting and well-lit paths and driveways are
also a good deterrent. Outside security lighting is cheap to set up, and low energy light bulbs keep running costs down. Also, consider installing a burglar alarm - as well as protecting your property, having an alarm can also lower your insurance premiums. While you’re away on holiday, some extra precautions will help protect your possessions. Keep valuables out of sight. If they can be seen, then someone might be tempted to try to steal them. Don’t close curtains in the daytime t h o u g h , as this announces to the world that your house is empty. Invest in timer switches to turn lights and the radio on and off. Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries. Inform a couple of trusted neighbours that you will be away. Ask them to keep an eye on your property and offer to do the same for them while they are away. Little tasks like moving the post away from the door, and drawing your curtains in the evening will make it look as though someone is in. They could even park a car on your drive if you are taking yours away. Offer to do the same for them when they go on holiday. Join your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or if there isn’t a local scheme, set one up. Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent track record of deterring opportunistic thieves. A little vigilance and some common sense go a long way to protecting the things you love. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to relax on holiday knowing your home is as safe as it can be. How to minimise work-induced injury
b o J r u o When Yis a pain Whether we work at a desk or in manual job, we can often develop pain or injury relating to our work. Two of the most common are neck and lower back pain. Back pain is the UK's leading cause of longterm sickness and is responsible for over 15 million sick days per year. Many aches and niggles can be related to repetitive strain, caused by doing a task over and over, or from prolonged and incorrect posture. In most cases it is a combination of factors which lead to pain, and symptoms can be hugely improved through the right exercise, physiotherapy and some simple lifestyle changes. If you’re regularly in a position which is not good for your body, it can start to wear down and cause injury. But you don’t have to accept this as an inevitable consequence of work. Simple changes like obtaining a new chair, or setting up your work station correctly can have a positive impact. There are also exercises that we can do throughout the day which can help increase mobility and prevent injury. These exercises concentrate on ensuring
a strong mobile thoracic spine, which promotes good posture while minimising the chance of injury. The thoracic spine is at the centre of our ability to move freely. If it becomes stiff then this impacts on our lower back, our neck and our shoulders and arms.
Shoulder rolls are excellent. Roll one at a time forward and then backward, then both together. Spinal rotation is also good. Lift your arms in front of you to shoulder height, bent at the elbows fingertips almost touching, then twist gently to the right and the left several times, trying to turn a little further each time without straining. Try some pectoral stretches by placing your hands behind your head and lacing your fingers together. Draw both elbows back to open the shoulders and ribcage. Hold the position for fifteen seconds. These exercises can be done easily while sitting or standing at your desk so do them three or four times per day. At home you can try a pelvic tilt. Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent. Flatten your back against the floor by tightening your abdominal muscles and bending your pelvis up slightly. Hold for up to 10 seconds. This about optimising your work place. Flexible sit/stand desks are becoming more popular. A sit/stand desk is one that allows the user to alternate between sitting and standing by being able to lower or raise the work surface. By being able to alternate sitting and standing, users can vary their body position more often which is better for spine health. Small adjustments to both your work space and your approach to posture can help ensure that you remain painfree and productive for longer. By Louise Addison

Chippenham Carnival will be Out of This World for 2019! Escape the ordinary and experience Chippenham Carnival: Lost in Space, brought to you by Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council and supported by Faresaver from 12-8pm on Saturday 13th July. The much-loved Chippenham Carnival was revived back in 2017 and attracts almost 18,000 visitors across the day offering over 8 hours of free entertainment for all the family. Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “This year marks 50 years since the first moon landing so it was too good a theme to not embrace for this year’s Chippenham Carnival! The number of entrants in last year’s procession quadrupled on the first year and we can’t wait to see who comes forward to take part this time!” Island Park’s landscape will be transformed and offer visitors lots of quirky space-themed live activity from 12noon, hosted by everyone’s favourite, Doc Brown. With performances from local dance troupes and musicians on the main stage, children’s characters as well as children’s rides and family games, whilst the picnic zone is the perfect place to enjoy treats from food stalls. The return of the Anonymous Travelling Market will delight visitors with hand-crafted items, gifts and produce from trade and charity stalls across the county, as well as a sprinkling of local traders. Official Host, Doc Brown will host a space-themed Fancy Dress Competition at 2pm at Island Park joined by the Mayor of Chippenham. Everything and anything space related is welcome - think space, fantasy, sci-fi and even music! The annual Carnival King, Queen, Prince and Princess will be crowned at 3pm with the support of Emery Gate Shopping Centre. Chairman of the Amenities, Culture and Leisure Committee, Cllr. Teresa Hutton “We are delighted to see the Carnival return again this year, it has been well received by the local community in Chippenham who have enjoyed being involved. The Lost in Space theme this year will encourage creative activities and fun for all the family.” Other free action-packed activities planned include a spaceclimbing wall for those explorers in the crowd and space face painting, plus a space themed photo wall and space-craft activities for all the family to enjoy. The float procession will take place at 7pm as last year, starting at Wood Lane Car Park, inviting the community to come together and celebrate 50 years since the moon landings. Have you ever walked around your own area as if you were a tourist? You'd be surprised how much there is to see and how little you probably know about the place you live. We get so bogged down in daily routines that we don’t pay attention to what’s in front of our eyes. Here are five great reasons to explore your own area this summer. A fresh pair of eyes - Take roads and corners you’ve never taken before. Get lost in streets you’ve never been to and see things you never realized were there. You’ll see your area in a new light. A history lesson - You’ve driven or walked by that building, church, or statue thousands of times, but do you know the name of it or the story behind it? Take time to learn about the history and secrets of where you live! Read a book, visit a museum. Gaining a better understanding of an area’s heritage is a good way to learn to appreciate it. Meet New People - Engage in a conversation with a complete stranger while exploring your own town. Coffee shops are good places because the atmosphere is relaxed. Older people often enjoy a chat and may have a wealth of knowledge about the area, especially if they grew up there. A new perspective - Find the highest building or vantage point and see if you can get a bird’s eye view of your area. For a completely different experience, see if you can do it again at night! Refresh your mind - Playing tourist in your own town can make you reconnect with and appreciate it. A teacher of mine once said, 'Keep exploring. Keep learning. Stay curious, and you won't go far wrong.' By Sarah Davey 52

Most Companies are ‘limited’ by shares, and ownership of the Company is represented by the number of shares held by shareholders. e.g. 20 of 100 shares = ownership of 20% of the Company. Typically, in shareholder meetings, one share = one vote. Shares also give the owner a share of the value of the Company when it is sold or wound up. Profits are paid out of the Company as dividends to shareholders when proposed by the Directors in proportion to shares held. Directors proposing a dividend, should draft a ‘Minute’, and pay out the dividends to the shareholders; then they should issue a dividend voucher to each shareholder. For most small Companies, an accountant is consulted regarding the tax efficient split of shares between directors and their partners/spouses to ensure that minimum tax is paid. Peter Bromiley ACA

So, what is available for those who prefer a non-dairy alternative?
Alternatives to Dairy Cow’s milk is considered dietary staple by many. It’s rich in protein and important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. But some people can’t or don’t drink cow’s milk at all due to personal preferences, dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances. 2–3% of children under the age of three are allergic to cow’s milk although most grow out of it. The allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including rashes, upset tummies and even anaphylaxis. Lactose intolerance is very common. Lactose is a sugar found in cow’s milk. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest this sugar so it stays in the digestive tract causing gas and irritation. Vegans exclude all products from their diet that originate from animals, and some people simply do not like the taste of cow’s milk. 54
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2019
Soy Milk – Made with either soybeans or soy protein isolate, and often contains thickeners and vegetable oils. It typically has a mild and creamy flavour. It has a similar nutritional make-up to cow’s milk, and works best in cooking, in coffee and on cereal. Almond Milk (or other nut milks) – This is made with either whole almonds or almond butter and water (cashew, hazelnut and macadamia nut milks are also available). Nut milks have a light texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavour. They contain fewer calories and fat thank cow’s milk but are also significantly lower in protein and carbohydrates. They can be added to coffee and tea, used on cereal, mixed in smoothies and used as milk in desserts and baked goods. Coconut Milk - Made from water and the white flesh of brown coconuts. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, subtle coconut flavour. It contains less fat than cow’s milk and significantly less protein and carbohydrates. It can be used on cereal and in smoothies and cooking. Oat Milk – Made from a mixture of oats and water.
It is high in soluble fibre, which is good for gut health. It is naturally sweet with a mild flavour and can be used in cooking in the same way as cow’s milk. It is also good for use on cereal or in smoothies. Rice Milk - Made from milled white or brown rice and water this is the least likely milk substitute to trigger allergies, which makes it a safe option for those with allergies or intolerances to dairy, gluten, soy or nuts. It is mild in taste and naturally sweet and is nice to drink on its own as well as in smoothies, or in desserts or over cereal. It is not a good choice for children or the elderly because of its low protein content, and it has a high glycaemic index so is not good for diabetics either. There is no one milk substitute that is ideal for everyone. The taste, nutrition and cost of these alternatives can vary considerably, so it is worth taking a while to experiment and find those that work best for you.

What is Government Policy on Elderly Care reform? We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises elderly care, for his views on this issue? Does the Government have a policy? Yes, their 8th June 2017 election manifesto said so. In summary it said that people should fund their own care from assets including their house until they only have £100,000 remaining. The amount spent should however, be subject to a CAP on how much individuals however rich or poor should pay. The amount of the CAP was not specified. What has happened to reform since the election? The answer is nothing. The Government in its March 2017 Budget stated that a Green Paper would be published. This statement was then made into a manifesto commitment. Ever since it has been delayed and recently it has been stated that it will happen at the first opportunity in 2019 with no date being provided. Has anything at all happened? Only indirectly in the form of one actual stealth tax and one shortly to be stealth tax. The actual tax is in the form of a trebling in the cost of death certificates from £4 to £11 each. This was made effective from the 16th February 2019. The Proposed other stealth tax already made law by the Non Contentious Probate fees Order 2018 increases the cost of obtaining a grant of Probate from a flat fee of £155 to a maximum fee on a sliding scale of £6,000. This tax is intended to become effective very shortly. What has happened in respect of the status quo? On the 23rd January 2019 the Government found time to confirm that for the ninth successive year people will still have to pay for all their care if their assets exceed £23,250. It remains the case that the state will only ignore your assets when they reduce to £14,250. Why is nothing happening? It could be said that the problem is too difficult, which is true. The real reason however, and as we all know is because of the dreaded word BREXIT. To know more and for a free appointment to find out answers to the questions that need answering email Andrew Douglas or his team on ajd@awdrys. co.uk or call on 0800 072 8636. Boules to Pétanque New Year and a New Name The Upper Thames Boules Club moved to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in 2018 and this year we have changed our name after obtaining permission from the Cabinet Office to the Royal Wootton Bassett Pétanque Club. A new club strip is being arranged and will have our new logo….. We have a range of abilities among our members, some just like the social play whilst others play at regional and national level. During the carnival (18th May) we will be building a temporary piste for the day in Boroughfields for everyone to come and have a go, so please visit us. The following Sunday, 26th May we are hosting a youth competition for all the youth organisations in the town. Also there are planned visits by individual youth organisations during May and June. To facilitate this we have very kindly been awarded part funding by the town council to purchase boules for use by the youths of the town.

Introducing…
ins by Celia Jenk
Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, a craft which can enable you to make a variety of beautiful and practical models. The aim is to create a paper sculpture through folding alone – no cutting or gluing of the paper. Square sheets of paper are used, and while there are numerous simple patterns for beginners, professional origamists are able to produce the most exquisite pieces.
History
Origami has been practiced in Japan since the Edo period (1603–1867). While napkin folding was popular in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, it wasn’t until much later that Europe took up an interest in paper folding. The British Origami Society was founded in 1967.
What you need...
While you can make origami sculptures of any size, the standard size for origami paper is 6x6 inches, as well as 3-inch squares for mini origami, and 10-inch squares for larger pieces. It’s better to use proper origami paper, which is thinner and easier to fold, and often comes in a variety of colours and patterns.
Practical uses
As well as making decorative pieces, origami can be used for practical items. With hot weather just around the corner, folding yourself an origami paper fan will come in handy this summer. Other practical designs can yield card holders, gift boxes, envelopes, coasters, chopstick cases and bookmarks.
Learning to do it
While there are numerous YouTube channels teaching origami, I’ve always found the best to be http://en.origamiclub.com/index.html. Each pattern has a printable step-by-step diagram, and most videos also have an animated version at various speeds. Patterns are rated by difficulty, and there are patterns for everything from traditional cranes and cute animals to dinosaurs and UFOs. Even young children can master simple origami patterns, and it makes a great rainyday activity.
Locally
In 2018, 2,500 origami doves flocked to Salisbury Cathedral following the nerve agent attack. A symbol of peace and hope, the installation echoed those on permanent display in Japan at locations like Nagasaki Peace Park, where there are thousands of paper cranes.
The Craft Studio in Pewsey has run origami workshops in the past, as has the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath. A number of local schools run origami clubs and events, such as the St Francis Primary School in Swindon, and the Holbrook Primary School in Trowbridge. 58

Following the success of Mother’s Day which originated in the USA, it seemed apt of course to give Dads a chance to be recognised for a special day in the year when they too could be treated and pampered. It is acknowledged that a lady called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and she planned a day to give thanks to fathers and indeed this special day has been celebrated in the USA since 1910. Held on the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day is a day to honour those who play a fatherly role and visit them and / or treat them to gifts to show how important they are in our lives. With the increase in availability of personally printed products, Dads often get given mugs, T’shirts or calendars. Depending on the age of the children involved a specially drawn picture or painted pebbles can be treasured for years to come - for those who are older a pub lunch is often favoured!

VET
So, you want to be a By James Campbell
Veterinary Medicine is a highly competitive field. Every year there are hundreds of applicants for each available place. It is probably one of the most over- subscribed courses in the country. You will need excellent A-levels. Most people have chemistry, biology and either physics or maths at Grade A or B. Some universities will accept other subjects if they are impressed with the candidate. You will need to check with individual universities. Many Veterinary schools expect candidates to take a BMAT test (BMAT stands for biomedical admissions test) in order to get into vet school. This is an aptitude test. Go to www.bmat.org.uk for information and sample questions.
Mostly you will be cleaning out kennels, feeding animals, making tea etc. It will almost certainly be unpaid. But ask lots of questions, and ask to observe interesting operations etc. Write up interesting cases and experiences as case studies, explain what you learned and submit these along with your application. This will prove to the university that you are self-motivated and dedicated, which counts for a lot during the application process. Remember that universities like to take on well-rounded students, so make sure develop hobbies and talents in other areas too.
Be prepared not to get in at the first attempt. You can re-apply and make use of the year to gain experience. Whether it is a first attempt or a retry you need to differentiate yourself for the competition. Try to gain experience working in a vet practice, on farms assisting with lambing or calving, in dog kennels or at local zoos and animal rescue centres.

Alicia Hawker wins best Under 25 award Hullavington based rider
Photo credit Eventing Images Alicia partnered Charles RR to her second Badminton completion, to take the prize for the highest placed 25 year old. With it being her final year of potential completion before being ‘too old’ for the category, this seemed the perfect opportunity to win such prize. Having self-produced Charlie, as he’s affectionately known, this acknowledgement means even more. They jumped an immaculate cross country round, just 22 seconds over the time allowed, jumping them an impressive 48 places up the leader board when going into the final phase. “As a local rider, Badminton was always the one I wanted to do. I remember Pippa Funnel winning the Grand Slam years ago - I was only 8 at the time! So it really is a dream come true to be able to compete there, alongside Pippa!”
...............
Charlie hasn’t always been easy. Alicia’s Grandad bought her the horse 7 years ago when he was a fresh 5 year old.
“I’m so proud of Charlie - when he came to us, he wouldn’t go near the water, let alone in it! So to now have him jumping those drops into the iconic Badminton Lake is just magical.” Having previously completed Pau 5* and finished 3rd in the Under 25 at Bramham along with many other achievements, Alicia now turns her sights to further 5*’s with this wonderful horse. They’re most certainly a pair to keep an eye on…

Nurturing Nature When there is an absence of nature, our souls will struggle and the land will feel like a sad place. But when the birds fly in, singing their happy songs, and the bees can pollinate the flowers, I guarantee you’ll start to find a connection that many of us have lost.
go from garden to garden. Add log and leaf piles for them to hibernate in and attract them to your garden by keeping your garden diverse with a wide variety of habitats such as ponds, log piles, hedges and a good variety of different plants.
A garden doesn’t just have to be about plants. It’s totally OK to grow a wilderness or cottage style garden if it suits you. Or a manicured, Italian style space can also work well. Whatever your choice, there are things you can do to make sure that you encourage ittle birds and animals into our open spaces once again.
BEE HOTELS
It’s not hard to do either. Remember that looking after a garden should be a journey. Every gardener worth his salt knows a garden is never finished and encouraging in wildlife is a similar thing. But with a few tweaks and additions, you can create a beautiful haven for our feathered and furry friends. If you build it, they really will come. So let’s get started.
HEDGEHOG HOSTELS
Sadly, hedgehogs are struggling with less than 1 million left now in the United Kingdom. But we can make a big difference to save these little animals. If you have neighbours then that’s where your efforts will be rewarded. Hedgehogs need to be able to roam far and wide in search of food, mates and nesting areas so if green spaces are linked together, hedgehogs can survive. They only need a 13cm square hole to get through, so create this between your fences to allow them a tunnel to
70
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2019
You may need to do a bit of research on the perfect environment for your particular bee requirements, but in essence, tubes or reeds are used to allow solitary bees to lay their eggs. The reeds you use must be free of splinters inside, have the end closed and allow moisture to exit. Reeds, or rolled up paper, tend to be better than drilled wood as they can be easily replaced each year, reducing the chance of spreading disease. Make sure there is an overhanging roof so that the nesting bees stay dry and out of the wind.
BIRD BOXES
The species you attract into your garden will depend on the location, type of box and the size of the entrance hole. Give this a little thought before you commit to a purchase. If you want a blue tit, then ensure the hole is 25mm in diameter, and up to 45mm for starlings. A box for a tit should be placed between 2 and 4 metres up a tree or a wall. Avoid strong sunlight and wind where possible. By tilting the box slightly forward, any driving rain will hit the roof and bounce clear.
Nestboxes are best put up during the autumn since many birds will check them out during this time. Tits will start to seriously investigate nesting sites during February and March so if you’re a little late in sorting out a box during the autumn then you can catch these little birds instead. The RSPB website has useful tips on nesting boxes. Visit www.respb.org.uk for further information.
MOTHS AND DRAGONFLIES
Attracting moths to your garden is reasonably easy and as they are also declining in numbers it is worth doing our bit to encourage them back. Loss of habitat is likely to be partly to blame so our gardens can help, particularly for those of us who like a messier garden with flowering weeds for nectar and an abundance of old stems and leaves under which they can hide from predators. If you stop using pesticides then moths and their caterpillars will thank you as they are badly affected by these chemicals. Nectar-rich and night-scented plants such as nicotiana, evening primrose, honeysuckle and jasmine will be welcome additions to attract moths in.
The Fresh Flower Company Since establishing The Fresh Flower Company in 2001, weddings have become a specialty of ours, through an ever growing wealth of knowledge and experience, built upon from the many weddings we have had the privilege of providing flowers for over the years. Our continued enthusiasm and love of beautiful flowers remains at the core of what we do. We have enjoyed providing wedding flowers at many fantastic venues and private marquees in the South West and are recommended by many fellow suppliers, particularly in Bath and the surrounding Wiltshire countryside. Owner, Rachel Lowe will work closely with you, providing a friendly and personal service and is happy to provide beautiful flowers for all size weddings.
Dragonflies can be a little harder to attract, but with four main elements present you can be successful. You need sunshine, places for them to land, food and water. As they are cold blooded, dragonflies like to bask in the warmth of the summer sun so the bigger the sun trap in your garden, the better. Give them somewhere they can perch to warm up twigs, shrubs and grasses are perfect for this. The more insects you have in your garden the better as this is what they prey on for food. Dragonflies lay their eggs under water so if you have a pond with reasonable plant cover that the insects can rest on to lay their eggs then all the better.

GARDEN VIEW
Sitting sustainably By Rachael Leverton
One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot. But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed? As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary. Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world! A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking. I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood?
The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source. Any product bearing the FSC logo is guaranteed to be from forests which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity and support local communities. Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do. The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated tree-felling. As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label. Many companies are now producing furniture made from recycled PVCs so thats worth checking out!
Happy gardening...

The car holds its own at 70mph, and there’s quite a bit of fun to be had when you point it at twisty tarmac. The front-wheel-drive Merc hunkers down, relaxes and then pings you out of the bends accurately and pleasingly. All this makes it an easy hatchback to like.
Pros & Cons
As handling and ride go, this small Mercedes is perfect for everyday motoring needs. I drove it on motorways and rural roads and felt satisfied all day. Even the potholes on the Cotswolds’ test route didn’t rain on the parade. The A-Class handled them with aplomb.

Skydive for RUH patients
Are you looking for something extraordinary to do in 2019? In July, you could be taking one big jump from a plane, to make one giant leap for patients at the Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH)! The Forever Friends Appeal, the fundraising charity for the hospital, is looking for as many daredevils as possible to join them for a day of skydiving on Sunday 7th July, at Netheravon Airfield in Wiltshire.
Make a splash for RUH patients
Patients and their families face tough challenges every single day and staff at the RUH are always there to guide, support and care for them, day in and day out. The funds raised from a skydive helps the charity invest in extra-special equipment and facilities that make a real difference to everyone at the hospital, that goes above and beyond what standard NHS funding can afford.
Newfoundland Dog Dive 2019 – Saturday 8th June 2019 @ Portishead Marina 10.30am – 4.30pm
In 2019, the Appeal will also be celebrating their 20th year of fundraising and it is with thanks to skydivers, the public and local community that over £20 million has been raised for the hospital since 1999. Help the charity continue their work with the experience of a lifetime… Registration costs £50 and jumpers are asked to raise £350 in sponsorship – this can be for the any ward/campaign/special appeal that is close to your heart. In return all participants will receive a jump t-shirt, fundraising guidance and lots of support from the drop zone.
One small splash into Portishead Marina, one giant leap for patients! This is your chance to play a 'casualty' and experience an open water rescue by a Newfoundland Dog, all whilst making a real difference to patients and families cared for at the Royal United Hospitals Bath. LIMITED AVAILABILITY You will be suited up, taken out into Portishead Quays Marina by boat and then asked to jump in… but don’t worry, it won’t be long before an incredible 14 stone, four-legged hero shows off their amazing water-rescue skills and tows you safely back to the boat! As part of this experience, which lasts approximately 1 hour, you will complete a safety briefing with one of the human lifeguards and have time to get into a wetsuit (a challenge in itself!), before heading out into the marina to begin your experience. The day is run by the incredible team at Newfound Friends UK and their well-trained and beautiful Newfoundland dogs, on behalf of The Forever Friends Appeal - we’ll be there on the day to capture the action and support you! It’s a fun day out for the whole family!

By the end of the novel, Susanna Quinn’s novel, these strands are drawn together into a Glass Geishas, is a twisting conclusion which will keep you thriller set in modern gripped. day Tokyo – specifically in the notorious Quinn has clearly drawn on some of Roppongi district, the recent writing about Japan and the where everything has significance of the geisha. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus – Mo Willems What do small children like best in a picture book? If anyone knows, it is Mo Willems, who spent several years as a scriptwriter for ‘Sesame Street’. And here, what he has hit on is that little word beloved of toddlers – ‘NO!’
The premise of the book is simple – and summed up neatly in the title. The reader needs to stop the pigeon driving the bus while the bus driver is away for a few minutes. However, this is a very determined pigeon. On every page he comes up with a good reason why he could, should and must drive that bus.
Reading this book aloud is a delight. As you read the pigeon’s increasingly desperate attempts to get behind the wheel, your audience can say – or shout – ‘No!’ at each page, usually accompanied by a great deal of giggling. And parents will recognise the toddler’s range of tactics – from pleading, to sulking, to promises to ‘be your best friend’ – all of which are summarily rejected. With simple drawings and a thoroughly endearing main character, this is ideal to read to pre-school children of any age. The pigeon makes several reappearances in Willems’ other books – ‘Don’t Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late’ is probably the next one you will want to seek out, and it is just as much fun. Really.

THE SOUTH To celebrate their 10th year anniversary and 30 years since The Beautiful South released ‘Song For Whoever’, The South are back this Summer, with a 2019 UK Tour playing shows up and down the whole of the UK. The South are an impressive 9 piece band who feature former members of The Beautiful South including singer Alison Wheeler and lifelong sax player Gaz Birtles. Since Dave
